Threatening skies were all around Oakshade on Saturday July 12th, but the rain
held off, and I know one team who is glad that it did.
At the start of the 25 lap UMP Late Model Feature, Ken Hahn jumped out to a
early lead, with Mike Martney in second.  Martney took over the lead on lap
seven, and held onto that spot for ten laps, when Hillard Miller made a move
to take over the lead on lap seventeen.  Miller would only hold that spot
for three laps, as Skeet Reckner who had slid back at the start of the
feature came charging to take over on lap twenty.  Skeet Reckner, of Wauseon
Ohio, driving the Krauss Electric, Kisman Propane, Don Williams Excavating,
American Made Chassis, TICO Racing Engines, Pontiac Grand Prix to his first
ever UMP Late Model Feature win.

Kris Patterson from St Johns Michigan became the first three time winner of the Barney Oldfield race held every year for the last 14 at Oakshade Raceway.     After five intense heats, and two consi's, the starting line up for the 14th Annual Barney Oldfield race was set, with fan favorite Hillard Miller starting on the pole, with Xtreme regular Matt Miller starting outside of the first row.  When the green dropped, Matt Miller moved his Lo-Temp Brazing, McCullough Industries, Russel Baker Racing Engines, Rocket Chassis Grand Prix to the point, with Hillard following in second until something broke on Hillards car coming out of turn two, ending his racing for the night.  Meanwhile, Matt Miller was stretching out to a very nice lead, only to be slowed on lap three for a wreck invloving Jeep VanWormer, Troy Catterene, and Mike McKnight.  On the restart, Miller pulled out to another nice lead, and maintained it until a lap 22 caution came out for the spun car of Brian McCabe.  On the restart, Miller once again stretched out to a nice lead, but Patterson had worked his way into fourth spot and was looking to take 3rd away from Shane Yoder.  The field was slowed again on lap 28 for Ken Hahn who had lost a tire.  On the ensuing restart, both Yoder and Patterson got by Brian Ruhlman, for second and third.  One lap later, Patterson had overtaken Yoder with a pass on the low side, a sign of things to come.  He began to work on Miller and the two put on a great show of some good clean racing, with Miller hauling around the cushion, with Patterson glued on the bottom.  On lap 35, Patterson was just able to edge Miller out at the line to lead that lap.  However Miller was not done leading yet, as
he began to give himself just a bit of breathing room, but Patterson was giving it his all, and he battled back to be right on Millers bumper as the
two took the white flag.  Entering turn one, the two encountered a lapped car, and Miller had to go down low to get by him, but let his car slide up the track a little to far, giving Patterson all the opening he needed, as he powered past Miller down the backstretch.  As they entered turn three, Miller gave it his all, as he tried to repass Patterson, but when the checkered flag fell, it was Kris Patterson driving the Midwest Michigan KFC, Lane Automotive, KB Carbs, Felice Racing Engines, CJ Rayburn Race Cars Ford Mustang to the victory for the $3,900 prize, plus the coveted silver trophy.   Miller followed taking second, followed by Shane Yoder, Brian Ruhlman,
Justin Paxton, Rick DeLong, Gregg Johnson, Todd Schoroyer, Rusty Schlenk,
and Randy Woodling.  Heats were won by Schlenk, Johnson, Yoder, Paxton, and
DeLong.

June 7, 2003
Oakshade Raceway got back in action after having a rain out the
previous week.  In the UMP Late Model's, 2001 Trach Champion Justin Paxton
got back to his winning ways collecting his first feature win of the season.
As the green flag dropped Rick DeLong moved his Noonan Powered Rocket to
the point, and began to stretch out a couple car length lead over Devin
Shiels and Todd Schroyer.  On lap three Paxton moved by Schroyer, and one
lap later passed Shiels for second spot, and began to run down DeLong.  On
lap 11, Paxton caught and passed DeLong to take over the lead and began to
check out on the rest of the field.  A few late race cautions would tighten
the field up, but nobody had anything for Paxton, as he took the checkered
flag about five car lengths ahead of DeLong, Todd Schroyer, Rusty Schlenk,
and Gegg Martin.
The Sportsman Feature was a good race too, with five time defending
Sportsman Track Champion Chris Smith taing home the checkered flag, in a
special apperence in the #6 Steve Meeks car.  Smith used the low line to his
advantage as he passed early race leader Joe Derbeck.  Once in front Smith
checked out on the rest of the field, collecting the win over derbeck, Ray
Klaywitter, devin Shiels and Rob Liaff.
The Bomber A-Main had a hard time getting the feature underway.  Four
restarts were required to get the race going, and once it did, it was the
three time defending Bomber Track Champion Brice Luttrell driving the Mike's
Repair, Kangaroo Motors, T-Mart of Metamora, KB Carbs, Miller Chassis Chevy
to victory lane for his third staight Bomber feature win this year.
Following Luttrell across the line was current point leader Rob Price,
George Laney, Gary Cole and Kevin Cole.
This coming week, is the 14th annual Barney Oldfield race for the UMP
Late Models, paying $3,900 to win.

The American Late Model Series made it's first of four stops to Oakshade
raceway in Waseon Ohio Saturday night.  54 cars were on hand, in what was to
be a very good night of some fast racing on the 3/8 mile track.  Coming into
the night, Kris Patterson held onto a three point lead over Jeep VanWormer,
looking to improve that lead on the track were he has won more features than
anyother driver in the tracks history.  On the redraw, to determine the
starting lineup for the feature, Kris drew a number two, and Jeep drew a
number 4, making for a interesting feature.  As the feature rolled off, it
was Hillard Miller on the point, with Patterson second, Rick DeLong third
and VanWormer starting fourth.  When the green flag dropped, Patterson took
the early lead into the first corner, however a devolpment was taking place
right behind him.  VanWormer had drove it to hard in to the first turn,
jumped the cushion, and proceded to come back down the track in front of the
whole pack, causing a massive wreck that totally blocked the track.  Cars
involved besides VanWormer were Justin Paxton, Hillard Miller, Greg Martin,
Rick DeLong, and Rusty Sclenk.  Miller and Paxton had to go pitside for some
repairs and restated the race from the tail of the field.  VanWormer and
Martin were done for the night.  On the restart, Kris Patterson jumped out
to a lead, and paced the field unconteneded until lap 29 of the 30 lap
feature.  Slowly but surely Brian Ruhlman had worked his way into second and
on the last lap, going into turn three, Ruhlman was able to get underneath
Patterson with a bonzi run to the bottom, but he didn't get the needed bite
down there, having to settle for second place to Kris Patterson, driving the
Midwest Michigan KFC, Lane Automotive, KB Carbs, Felice Racing Engines, C.J.
Rayburn Race Cars, Ford Mustang to victory lane for the $2,000 to win
feature, and more imporantly extending his lead in the ALMS.  Brian Ruhlman
finished second, followed by Aaron Scott, Shane Yoder, Todd Schroyer,
Hillard Miller, Jeff Clapp, Mike McNight, Skeet Reckner, and Rusty Schlenk
completed the top ten.

May 17th 2003:
After a washout last weekend, Oakshade got it's racing schedule underway
again with a great night of racing.  A rain out for the ALMS race in
Montpelier Ind. made for a nice car count at Oakshade, as many of the ALMS
regulars made the drive to Oakshade to get ready for next weekends ALMS
show.  A total of 50 UMP Late Models were on hand, promising to make a great
race.
After 5 very exciting heat races, the field was set to take the green, and
it was Rody Schroyer jumping out to an early lead, followed by Kris
Patterson.  Those two pulled away from the rest of the field, but all eyes
were on Justin Paxton and Jeep VanWormer, who were quickly making there way
through the field.  A caution on lap 15 tightened the field up with Schroyer
leading, followed by Patterson, VanWormer, and Paxton.  On the restart
Patterson made a great move to get around Schroyer, and began to pull away.
At the end it was Kris Patterson, driving the C.J. Rayburn, Felice Racing
motors, Ford Mustang to the victory, followed by Rody Schroyer, Justin
Paxton, Rick DeLong, Patrick Barney, Hillard Miller, Tim Wright, George
Lindsey, Tim Sabo, and Bill Hahn.

Oakshade Raceway kicked off its 2003 UMP Late Model season saturday May
3rd.  On the line this year is a very lucritive $10,000, plus a new Rayburn
Chassis, and the drivers did not disappoint!  The 25 lap UMP Late Model
feature started out with a crash involving the #79 of Bruce Stewart as well
as a couple other cars, all were able to continue in the event.  When the
race got underway again, the pace was fast and furious, with alot of 3 wide
racing from front to back, and everywere in between.  The race went pretty
much caution free after that first crash, and when it was all said and done,
Todd Schroyer out of Ottawa Lake MI, driving the #15 Noonan Powered Rocket
took the checkers first.  Second place went to Justin Paxton, driving the
B&P Wrecking, Paxton Equipment sponsored Noonan Powered Rocket.  Third went
to the #3 of Rick Delong driving a Noonan powered Rocket.  Fourth went to
the #00 of Casey Noonan driving the Lo-Temp Brazing, Performance Machining,
Noonan Powered Barry Wright.  Following the foursome across the line was
Mike McNight, Gregg Martin, Dan Wallace, Mike Harger, Steve Rowe, and Rob
Mitchell.  Heats were won by Rick Delong, Justin Paxton, and Todd Schroyer.
