Steve Potter
2003 Third National Bank Modified Champion

The 2002 Third National Modified title proved that consistency pays over wins with Steve Potter taking the title.  Wanting to make that trip to the Union Savings Bank Winners Circle as well as taking home another season title had Potter and the whole Potter Racing Team roaring into the 2003 season with a vengance.  It sure didn't take long for the team to flex their muscle as they were one of two defending champions to take victories on opening night of the Miller Lite Summer Shootout Series.  Steve always had a smile on his face and when it came right down to the wire he held off the late season charge of Howard Hall to take the 2003 title by a mere point - you sure can't get much closer than that.  We recently caught up with the Boonville, MO modified ace to get his thoughts on the 2003 racing season.

Steve Potter readies to pull his familiar 1P onto the track for hot laps early in the season.

SSFS: Well here we are again.  How great does it feel to win the title back to back?

Potter: One title was great, but to win two in a row is unreal especially at Sedalia.

SSFS: During your 2002 championship run you did it without a victory and this year you started your title run with a win on opening night.  Just how important was it to you to get that win this year?

Potter: It was extremely important.  Last year seemed to have something missing...must have been that feature win!  We were determined to start out fast and win some this year.

After winning the 2002 title without a victory the whole team was estatic about pulling into the Third National Bank Winner's Circle on May 2, 2003.

SSFS: Was winning the title again any different than winning it the first time?

Potter: It was just as good as the first time around only a little sweeter with the wins.

SSFS: You sure can't get any closer than the final points were.  Only 1 point separated you and Howard Hall.  How stressful did it get going into that last points race with the two of you being that close?

Potter: It wasn't too stressful.  My crew chief, Randy Richards told me after a crash on July 4th that we would win the championship by 1 point.  Next time I hope it's a bigger spread.   I think last year the point spread was closer going into the final night than it was this year.

SSFS: Your family is a big supporter of your racing - tell us a little about themy?

Potter: My wife, Stephanie, has always been there to help and support me.  We met here at a Sedalia State Fair race in '89 and were married the following year.  We have three daughters, Shelbi - 12, Sheridan - 9 and Shayann 3.  They have racing in their blood as well.  All three are ready to start racing go-carts now.  Mom - Beverly and Dad - Bob have always been a big part of my racing as have my two brothers Rusty and Curt.  We try to help each other in any way we can.

SSFS: Whether you're a champion or just a beginner sponsors are an integral part of a race team and you've got some great ones.  Why don't you tell us a little about those that help you out.

Potter: KT Comm Programming (sell cable programming to businesses such as hotels, condos, etc.,) Sell's Carpet in Boonville, Troy Thurman Development & Construction, Potter Trucking, Randy Richards - Flooring Specialist,  Midwestern Flyer Race Cars, SCP Racing Engines and Open Bible Praise Center in Boonville.

SSFS: Every week you and your brother Curt had a section of fans in the stands that cheered on your every move.  How great was it to have that enthusiastic of a cheering section?

Potter: It was pretty cool.  I've never had a group of fans like that before.  Most of the time it was members of our church and some sponsors.  The church really got into the racing this year.  Several guys are planning to get their own car for next year.

SSFS: With this title you and your brother both have two track championships at SSFS.  Are you planning on coming back to try and get that third one to break the family tie?

Potter: I haven't made the final decision for next year just yet.  A third title does sound pretty good.  Still waiting on that BIG late model sponsor to come along.

SSFS: Some people say the the first win or title is always the toughest.  Was this one any easier than the first?

Potter: They were both tough.  If you win a championship at Sedalia it's bound to be tough with the class of cars you compete against every week.

SSFS: Anything else you'd like to add?

Potter: Special thanks to: my crew - Randy Richards and Terry Dreyer for all their help this year and their wives Becky and Deana for their support, the sponsors, my family, all my fans that come out every week and those in Potterville,  Gary Wilson of Midwestern Flyer Race Cars for building me a winning car, Jeff Rabon with Fast Track Ministries for all his prayers and friendship, and most of all The Lord Jesus Christ for without his help none of this would have been possible.

Berck holds on for WDRL PolyDome Championship 50 and the title

By Clint Brown
October 13, 2003
Sedalia, Missouri

The sophomore season of the World Dirt Racing League PolyDome Super Series came to a close on Sunday evening and for the second year in a row Marquette, NE hot shoe Kyle Berck drove away with the title.  Leaving the historic 1/2 mile of Sedalia's State Fair Speedway Berck not only had the season championship, but he also added another win to his total on the 2003 campaign by holding off his closest point rival Joe Kosiski.

As the feature rolled off the field was paced by the Tiffin, IA machine of Denny Eckrich who quickly established a comfortable margin on the field.  Eckrich's lead never dwindled as he was able to hold his cushion through three early cautions and had stretched his lead to nearly a full straight.

While Eckrich was continuing his run at the point Berck was quickly moving his was through the pack after taking the green from the inside of row four.  Through the early laps Berck had been able to move his way up to the fourth position by the tenth lap of the fifty lap affair.  The fight continued as Joe Kosiski and Al Humphrey saw Berck move around them and into second place on laps 17 and 18.

Through 30 laps the top five remained the same, but it was apparent to the crowd on hand that Berck didn't plan to settle for second as he began to close on the lead car of Eckrich.  Suddenly it was readily apparent why the gap closed so quickly as Eckrich's mount began to smoke heavily as he entered turn one and Berck quickly made to move to the lead on lap 31.  The field was slowed on lap 32 for a caution, but Berck was never challenged after that as the remainder of the event went without a caution.  At the line Berck was able to hold a full straightaway lead on the second place machine of Kosiski with Ed Dixon, Gary Stolba and Terry Phillips rounding out the top 5.

Pit Notes

-After the race it was apparent that the Dorothy Lynch Salad Dressing #14 of Kyle Berck probably wouldn't have gone much further.  Over the course of the last few laps an unusual noise could be heard coming from the rear and the crew quickly figured out why.  The cap on the rear end had come off during the race and the rear end grease had run completely out.

-Matt Furman had a scary ride in his heat race as entering turn one his car suddenly rolled up onto the right front tire then came completely off the ground.  When the car came back down it made a hard impact with the wall ending Furman's night.  Furman was somewhat shaken, but otherwise ok.  The same could not be said for the car.

-Several Miller Lite Summer Shootout drivers took to the track in an attempt to hold off their traveling counterparts and take home bragging rights.  Of those driver's 2003 W-K Chevrolet-Buick Late Model Champion  Chris Smyser came out with the best finish.  Running as high as third in the feature event, Smyser slipped back a little in the late stages to finish ninth in the Mike Crump Racing 00s.

-Fans saw something that they haven't come to expect in the last several years when Terry Phillips was unable to transfer from his heat and had to run one of the nights two KSE Racing Produts Consolation events.  Phillips transferred to the feature and then put on a show for the fans as he roared up from the twentieth starting position to fifth in the final run-down.

-Three drivers attempted to take home the double on the evening by running with both the modifieds and the late models, but none were able to pull off the feat.  Lone Jack, MO's Chad Lyle had to feel good about his chances however, as he was able to win the Modified event and was starting on the outside front row for the late model feature.  Problems with the late model prevented him from keeping the fast pace and he was forced to pull the car in and finished in the 22nd position.  Richard Foster and Jason Bodenhamer were the other two drivers that were pulling double duty on the evening.

Chris Smyser
2003 W-K Chevrolet-Buick Late Model Champion

As each new season rolls around race teams roll onto the track looking to grab the brass ring and take home a season championship.  Drivers, crews, sponsors all look to take home as many wins as possible, but they will also tell you that the key to a championship run is consistency.  No driver or team showed that to be true than the Mike Crump Racing 00s driven by Lancaster, MO's Chris Smyser.  During the 2003 Miller Lite Summer Shootout Series Chris was able to take two hard fought wins, but his nine top-5 and ten top-10 finishes helped him to pull away from the pack and take home the W-K Chevrolet-Buick Late Model Championship.  "Smyz" as he is affectionatley know, has built an extensive list of accomplishments in the few short years he has raced and is a fan favorite whenever he rolls onto the track.  Recently we were able to talk to Chris and find out what it was like to take home the title.

Chris Smyser rolled the Mike Crump Racing 00s into the Third National Bank Winner's Circle twice on the year including here on May 23, 2003.

SSFS: You had a great year in the Mike Crump Racing 00s with only one DNF all season. What do you attribute your consistency this year to?

Smyz: Our consistency is due to the efforts of Mike and the guys - Mark, Jeffrey, Chet, Harry and Chris. Those guys really wanted to win this championship bad after we finished 2nd in 2002. We had 3 dnfs in 2002 and we felt like that was the main reason that we aren't a repeat champ this year, so those guys worked their tails off to keep up on the preparation and maintenance end of things, and it definitely showed. The only dnf we had was due to a little brain fade on the part of the driver!

SSFS: Mike Crump has always had one of the top late models to roll onto the track.  Just how did this situation come together with you getting behind the wheel of his car?

Smyz: Mike had parted ways with Vic Bentlage after many years of racing together and he was looking for a driver to fill the seat. I met him formally at the Moyer-Wallace driving school in the fall of 2001, and then bumped into him again at the PRI show that winter. It was mentioned in conversation that he was looking for someone to drive his car and I knew he had always had good equipment so I told him to call me if he was interested. He called me in the early spring, and here we are. I race for Mike about half the time, and I compete with my own stuff the other half.

When not wheeling the 00s Smyser can usually be found behind the wheel of his Smyser Racing 25s.

SSFS: Some people around here hadn't had a chance to see you drive before the 2002 season, but you've been racing for several years. Give us a little background on your racing experience.

Smyz: I started racing in 1996. I started in late models and drove a modified one night a week during my rookie year also. I ran mostly in Iowa for the first few years, chasing IMCA points and competing at weekly tracks in Bloomfield, Burlington, Des Moines, Quincy and others. I became competitive in the IMCA racing and won 3 track championships and got top 5 finishes in the IMCA national points and in the Deery Brothers Summer Series points. In 2001 we started trying to travel a little more and get our
feet wet in some of the open late model events, and we have continued to do that. This past season, I ran primarily open stuff and a few IMCA races. I race anywhere from 50 to 60 times each year on average and we usually travel to 15 or 20 different tracks each year. We try to go to good paying races and compete against the best cars because that is the only way to get better.

SSFS: Fans of dirt track racing are familiar with your dad, Sonny Smyser, and what he accomplished in his racing carrer.  How has he influenced your racing career and what kind of support does he give you?

Smyz: My dad is the reason that I'm doing what I do today.  He was one of the best racers around for many years and I tried hard to soak all of that in while I was getting older and helping him. Since I started racing, his coaching and experience have been invaluable to me. He really sped up the learning curve for me and helped me get up to speed quickly. He is my right arm as far as my racing program goes. He has probably only missed 3 or 4 of my races throughout the 8 years that I've raced. He drives our tow truck a lot of the time so that I can get some rest on the way to and from the races and he is always out at the shop helping me get the work done. There is just no way that I could do what I do without him.

SSFS: You and your team came real close to the title last year when you finished in the runner-up position, but what did it mean to you to come back win the championship in 2003?

Smyz: It was a pretty important deal to win the championship. I have won 3 other track titles in the past, but this one had the best competition by far. Also, I had my car owner and my crew guys who wanted it so bad so I wanted to do everything I could to help bring it home for them.

SSFS: You've been the student with your dad, but now you've become somewhat of a teacher to Reid Millard. What is it like to pass on your experience to another driver?

Smyz: It's different. Dad and I both try hard to help Reid get better because he's a big part of our team and we want to see him run good and enjoy the racing. Sometimes it's hard for us to all get on the same page because Dad and I have been around it so long and Reid is just getting started so some of the terminology we use is new to him, but he is definitely learning and getting better all the time.

SSFS: A lot of people don't know that you have an engineering degree. Tell us a little about your education.

Smyz: I have both a Masters Degree and a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Minor in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Missouri-Rolla. I'm very proud of my education because I was able to finish my entire course of study with a 4.0 grade point average. Mom and Dad told me that I couldn't race until I completed my education, so I wanted to make sure I got it done right.

SSFS: Where do you work and what do you do there?

Smyz: I work for John Deere in Ottumwa, Iowa. We build all of the hay equipment for Deere. I worked for 6 years as a manufacturing engineer in the machining area and I have just recently moved into a Test Engineer position so I'm excited about that. I get to design and set up tests on our new equipment to make sure that it meets our design criteria, which is a fancy way to say that I get to go out and try to break stuff to see if it is tough enough! That's my kind of job!

SSFS: With the technological advancements in racing today does your degree in engineering help you out any?

Smyz: I definitely feel like my degree has helped me out. I am able to better understand the car and how the suspension works, and I can think through how different changes might effect the car. But there is still a lot of judgment and experience involved, and there is no better way to get that other than get out there and race. I hope I can keep on learning and using both my knowledge and experience to help me get to where I can win my share of the bigger races someday.

SSFS: Your whole family is really behind your racing operation, tell us a little about them.

Smyz: Well of course most people know my dad. My mom Bev is a high school guidance counselor and is the person who added a milder edge to my fiery side. I have a sister Amy who is 3 years younger than me and is a practicing LPN. My wife Danielle is my best friend and probably my biggest
fan and helper. She comes with us as much as she can, and we have a daughter Brooklyn who will be 1 this month. She is the best thing that ever happened to us, and she's so much fun. I just don't know what I did without her, and I can't wait until next season when my girls can both come to the races more often!

SSFS: Sponsorships are important in all forms of motorsports and you've been able to bring in some really great ones.  Tell us a little about the sponsors you've been able to secure.

Smyz: We get help from Fluid Filtration Systems out of the quad cities in Iowa. They give us oil and lubricants, as well as a filtration system that we use to recycle our engine oil every few races,
which is a very neat deal. We also get help from Weld Racing Wheels, Afco Shocks, Mike Crump Racing and Sales, PBM performance products, Coors Light, Kirchner Machine, TTM graphics, B&K Sportswear, Heartland Motorsports.Com and Outlaw Motorsports.

The entire Mike Crump Racing crew is a big reason that Smyser was able to put his mount to the front of the pack on a consistent basis.

SSFS: Anything else that you'd like to add.

Smyz: First I'd like to say thanks to Mike, Mark, Jeffrey, Chet, Harry, Chris, Donnie, Ester, Reid, Julia and everyone else involved with the Crump team that helped us do what we did this summer. I definitely don't want to leave out the wives who let the guys come and help out on the car and go to the races every week! I also want to say thanks to my Dad and my wife for their support and help. I want to say thanks to all the staff at SSFS for putting on a good show and to all the fans for coming out to the races each week. We definitely wouldn't be there without them. Finally I'd like to thank the guys who help me out on my own cars when they can: Todd, Lamby, Nick and Mark. I'd also like to thank all of our sponsors and invite everyone to check out my website at www.smyser-racing.com.

The "dirt" is gonna fly as the World Dirt Racing League PolyDome Super Series rolls onto the historic 1/2 mile

By Clint Brown
October 2, 2003
Sedalia, Missouri

On Saturday, October 11, history will be made as the World Dirt Racing League PolyDome Super Series late models take to the historic 1/2 mile for their first visit ever.  Not only will this be the inaugural visit for the WDRL to Sedalia's State Fair Speedway, but this event will also close out their 2003 racing season.

"I tell you what," started a beaming David Goodson.  "We just couldn't be happier than to have Jim Wilson and the World Dirt Racing League PolyDome Super Series to select the historic 1/2 mile to close out their season.  You know there is going to be bumper to bumper and wheel to wheel action all night long as these drivers try to gain those hard fought positions in the final points standings."

Racing into the final night Kyle Berck of Marquette, NE holds a slim lead over second running Joe Kosiski.    Not to be outdone, Seubert Calf Ranches Rookie of the Year candidate, Skip Frey, holds down the third spot well within striking distance of both Berck and Kosiski.  John Anderson and Ed Kosiski, the second of the Kosiski racing trio, round out the top five as the traveling circus of the WDRL roll into Sedalia's State Fair Speedway.

Not to be outdone, SSFS will be well represented with a host of drivers looking to hold off the charge of the traveling band and keep the race victory at home in the state fair city.  Look for 2003 W-K Chevrolet-Buick Late Model champion, Chris Smyser,  to end his season on a victorious note along with other notables like 2002 champ Dave Meyer, 2003 Missouri State Late Model champ Chad Clark, and 2002 Missouri State LM winner Richard Foster looking to make their way to the front.

Taking to the track, along with the ground pounding late models, will be the always exciting modifieds as they fight their way around the track looking for the $1000 winner's check.

As always, the racing action gets underway with gates swinging open at 5:30, hot laps beginning at 7:00 and heat races taking to the track at 8:00.  Tickets for this event are only $18.00 for adults with children 5-15 getting in for the same low price as all season of $5.00.

Billy Alley claws his way to the top of the mountain during the Sedalia 360 Shootout Finale

By Clint Brown
September 28, 2003
Sedalia, Missouri

Lincoln, NE's Billy Alley never gave up in his quest for the $10,000 winner's share of the Sedalia 360 Shootout and it paid off with a thrilling last corner move around Shane Stewart for the win.

With two nights of preliminary action out of the way it was time for 63 of the finest 360 racers from around the country to take to the track.  With only four drivers prequalified for the feature everybody else was fighting for their lives to make it through the six heat races and two B features for the chance to race for the pot of gold offered up by Action Sports Promotions.

Jason Martin, Brian Brown, Doug Wilson, Jake Peters, Gary Lee Maier, and Aaron Berryhill had kept their chances alive by taking heat race wins, while Travis Rilat and Randy Martin topped the two B features.

The starting position of the four prequalified drivers was determined by their finishing order in the Down & Dirty Down Under Dash, which saw Shane Stewart take the $500 winner's share and the pole for the evening's A feature.  Following Stewart across the line were Alley, Kenny Adams, and Jesse Hockett.

It took three attempts to get the feature underway as Don Droud Jr. stopped on the track with mechanical problems on the first attempt and Jon Corbin looped his car in turn two on the second attempt.

The third attempt saw everybody make their way around the track unscathed and the battle was on.  Stewart immediately jumped to the point and built a commanding lead over second place Alley with Adams and Hockett in tow.  Brian Brown made his move early as he had worked his way past Hockett and into fourth position on the fifth go round.

By the ninth lap Stewart had opened up a 3/4 straightaway advantage over Alley when he entered lapped traffic for the first time.  On lap 11 the red flag flew as the 33w of Doug Wilson slid up and made contact with the turn 1 wall causing his machine to go into a series of easy rolls.  Wilson was uninjured, but his machine was done for the evening.

The ensuing red flag gave the crews a chance to look the machines over and make any minor adjustments and it looked to be to Alley's advantage.

On the restart Stewart retained his lead, but wasn't able to open up the advantage that he once had.  Alley kept his machine on the high side and was able to relegate Stewart to the second spot on lap 15 with a strong move through 3 & 4.

That lead wouldn't last long as Stewart came storming back on lap 18 to retake the lead from Alley and open about a 3 car length lead.

The yellow flag would once again wave on lap 19 as Dale Howard looped his machine in turn 4 to bunch the field up once again.  Howard was able to continue.

This set up what would become an 11 lap dash to the end as Stewart lead Alley, Adams, Brown and Zach Chappell to the restart.

With only two laps remaining the fans were on their feet as Stewart opened a 5 car length advantage on Alley and was working lapped traffic.

With the white flag waving Alley had pulled to Stewart's rear bumper once again and was looking for any way to get around the leader.  That opportunity came in turn 4 when the leader slid high and Alley was able to get a bite off the bottom and move under Stewart and flash past the checkered flag.  At the finish Brian Brown had worked his way into the third position with Zach Chappell and Jesse Hockett close behind him to round out the top five.

Kenny Adams slipped to sixth in the late  going with Aaron Berryhill, Gary Lee Maier, current ASCS points leader Travis Rilat, and Gary Wright bringing home top 10 finishes.

Hockett takes win in Sedalia 360 Shootout Prelim #2

By Clint Brown
September 27, 2003
Sedalia, Missouri

Action at the Sedalia 360 Shootout was put on hold for a day, but the results were still what Jesse Hockett had hoped for as he was able to hold off the rest of the field and take the Sedalia 360 Shootout prelim #2.

Action got underway as 31 of the nations top 360 pilots signed in at the back gate with four heat races.  Action in the first heat saw the #75 of Warsaw, MO's Jesse Hockett cruise to the win by nearly a full straight a way.  Behind him the action was tight as Larry Neighbors was able to hold off the charge of Danny Smith for second with Aaron Berryhill and Eric Jobe rounding out the top 5.

Heat two saw outside polesitter Kenny Adams jump to the immediate lead coming off of turn two and pull away for the win by 15 car lengths..  Polesitter Terry Hinck slotted into the second position with Tim Crawley, Jeff Mitrisin, and Eric Vanderplug following across the line.

Heat three rolled off with another outside front row starter grabbing the early lead.  Gary Lee Meier took to the high side to pass polesitter Mitchell Moore and pull continually pull away to the easy heat victory.  Moore was able to bring his mount home in the second position with Mike Chadd, Jesse Gianetto, and Don Droud Jr. coming home with top 5 finishes.

Heat four saw a previous Sedalia's State Fair Speedway victor take to the track and come home with a win.  The 5H of Bobby Hawks pulled away from the field to finish ahead by a full straight away.  Matt Clevenger, Jason Martin, Joe Beaver and Cody Blanchard rounding out the top 5.

The B feature rolled off with 12 starters and Don Droud Jr. made quick work of the 12 lap transfer race.  Working from his pole position, Droud quickly moved out front of the field and held on for the distance.  Eric Vanderplug, Gary Wright, and Larry Ball Jr. made the right moves as they were able to work their way into transfer positions and into the A feature.  Rounding out the top 5 was Eric Jobe who slipped two positions on the last lap and came up one spot short.

The A feature was set to be a dog fight as everyone was fighting for those coveted top two positions and a transfer directly into the $10,000 to win feature event.  Starting from the pole, Jesse Hockett quickly established himself as the man to beat by jumping out to a five car length lead over his closest pursuer Kenny Adams.  The field was sorting itself out as the red flag flew for the D1 of Jesse Giannetto made contact with the turn 2 wall that sent the car into a couple of easy flips.  Giannetto emerged unscathed from the accident, but the same couldn't be said for his car as it needed the assistance of a tow truck back to the pits.  At the same time that the red flag was flying several cars got together on the front stretch sending drivers scrambling to take evasive action.  Unfortunately the 21H of Terry Hinck had nowhere to go and tagged the rear of the Mitchell Moore machine sending both cars into a spin.  Neither driver was hurt with Hinck suffering the worse damage and making a trip to the work area to replace a valve cover, but both cars were able to continue.  On the restart Hockett again made the move to the front and put a cushion of about 6 car lengths between himself and Adams.  The margin stayed the same with neither driver able to gain an advantage until a lap 15 caution for the disabled mount of Mitchell Moore in turns 3 & 4.  Once the 2d machine was cleared Hockett opened up a nearly 10 car length advantage over Adams and was able to hold it over the remaining five laps and take the win.  Adams held off the always tough charging Kansan Gary Lee Meier.  Tim Crawley held down the fifth spot with Jeff Mitrisin, driving the #21 of Sedalia's Tim Doogs, rounded out the top five.

Tickets are still available for tonights finale of the Sedalia 360 Shootout with adult admission only $20.00 and children 6-12 set at $5.00.  Grandstand gates will swing open at 5:00 pm with hot laps set to go off at 7:00 and heat races at 8:00.  Also on hand for the nights activities will be the Simpson Imports Modified Shootout with several of the areas top drivers on hand vying for the $1000 top prize.

Shane Stewart holds off a hard charging Billy Alley for opening night win to the Sedalia 360 Shootout

By Clint Brown
September 26, 2003
Sedalia, Missouri

Opening night of the 3 day Sedalia 360 Shootout presented by Action Promotions is in the books and what a night of racing action it was.  Oklahoma's Shane Stewart was able to wheel his lightning fast #4m to the front and hold off the charge of 2003 Knoxville Raceway 360 champion Billy Alley and take the first step towards the $10,000 payday on Saturday night.

At the drop of the green flag Stewart and Alley made it known that they were going to be forces to be reckoned with as they took advantage of their front row starting spots and immediately opened up a sizeable lead on the rest of the field.  With only 1 lap in the books the red flag flew as the third place car of Zach Chappell's mount broke in turn four nearly sending his mount of it's roof.  Chappell walked away unscathed, but his evening was done.

On the restart Stewart and Alley once again pulled away from the field and opened up a nearly 1/2 lap lead on the rest of the field.  This left the lead duo to fight it out between themselves and Alley worked his was up to Stewart on the ninth lap as they worked through traffic.  Clearing traffic four laps later Stewart was once again able to open up a 6 car advantage on Alley as they began to bear down on a large pack of cars.

Lap 18 nearly saw Stewart's could have been the undoing for Stewart as he jumped the cushion in turn 1, but unfortunately for Alley he had done the same thing a lap earlier and was unable to capitalize.  Before lap 18 could be completed the field was slowed by the yellow as the #86 machine of Eric Schrock came to a stop in turn 4 bringing the 2003 Winged Outlaw Warriors champion's night to a close.

With the field bunched up for a final restart Stewart was able to hold onto the lead and the win holding off Alley as they crossed the line.  Chuck Swenson held onto the hotly contested third spot with Clint Garner holding down the fourth position.  Travis Rilat came back from his heat race problems to finish a solid fifth after transferring from the night's B feature.

Night 2 of the Sedalia 360 Shootout kicks off on Friday night with another field of high powered rocket ships taking to the track in an effort to make it to Saturday nights A feature.  Some of the names already registered for Friday night are Tim Crawley, Gary Wright, Jesse Hockett, Terry McCarl, and Danny Smith so it is sure to be another great night of racing.

Tickets are still available for Friday night with adult admission only $10.00 and children 6-12 set at $5.00.  Grandstand gates will swing open at 5:00 pm with hot laps set to go off at 7:00 and heat races at 8:00.

Schultz, Morton, and Welschmeyer lead way in final tune up before the Fall Classic

 Clint Brown
September 21, 2003

On the final night of racing action prior to the 3rd Annual Fall Classic there were several drivers making the trip in to prepare for next weeks action.  Some of those invaders had a bid of misfortune while others showed that they were going to be a force to be reckoned with.

The Super Stocks were the first to roll onto the track and after a commanding win in the heat the 11H of Greg Hunt looked to be a favorite for the win, but Robbie Ott had other plans.  Bolting from his outside front row starting spot, Ott jumped to the early lead as he went green to checker for the win in the non-stop affair.  Hunt was able to hold onto the second spot while Brandon Raymond and Fred Lacey rounded out the field.

The Street Stock division saw Ted Welschmeyer wheel his #21w to the heat win and the pole position for the A feature.  At the drop of the green Welschmeyer was never challenged as he pulled out to a sizeable lead and lead the entire affair.  Coming across in second was the #11 of Roger Young followed closely by Robby Jones, BJ Frisbie, and Joe John Clancy rounding out the top 5.

Added to the card for the night, the Pro 4 division rolled out with some heavy hitters in the field.  Ken Jones and popular late model driver Rex McCroskey were able to hold off all challengers and win their respective heats.  When Chuck Dobson's green flag waved McCroskey jumped to the front and never looked back in the caution free event.  McCroskey took home the win with Ken Jones bring his mount home in the runner up position.  Lonnie Milbar, Josh Jones, and Rick Metcalf were able to hold their spots and round out the top 5 as they crossed the line.

The Sportsman division saw an increased number of cars this week as several "invaders" made the trip in, but a win for one of them was not to be.  Steve Morton immediately assumed command of the field, but he was dogged by the #101 machine of Harlan Kennedy and 2003 track champion John Fellers throughout.  Several times both Fellers and Kennedy were able to make runs at the #32 of Morton, but just couldn't complete the pass.  At one point Kennedy cleared Morton to take over the lead, but a caution flag relegated him back to second.  At the line Morton held off Kennedy for the win with Fellers coming home in third.  The #55k of Andy Kennedy and the #14 of Shawn Williams completed the top five at the finish.  Morton and Fellers took home the wins in their respective heat races.

Another group of "invaders" made the trek in for the Modified division and this time one of them was able to take home the victors spoils.  Sedalia's Terry Schultz worked the high side to perfection and had a torrid battle going with early race leader Dennis Bunger and the 17m machine of Jeff Miller.  Bunger held the point with a five car length advantage over second running Miller while Schultz was biding his time in third.  At the halfway point Schultz was able to get past Miller and move into second and quickly began to reel in Bunger.  With three laps to go both Schultz and Miller had tracked down Bunger and the fight for the lead was on.  Schultz was once again able to utilize the high line to make the move around Bunger.  Miller then made a bold move to the inside of Bunger to move into the second spot, but he was not able to run down the #90 machine of Schultz.  Bunger was able to hold onto third while brothers John and Donnie Fellers rounded out the top 5 at the line.  Heat race victories went to Miller, Bunger, and Schultz on the evening.

Unfortunately the rains that have come through the area have forced officials at Sedalia's State Fair Speedway to cancel tonights Dirtworks Racecars Topless Nationals presented by Budweiser. This is not a decision that anybody wanted to make, but the decision had to be made. With the amount of rain that has fallen has made it impossible for the track to be ready in time to race.

It was with great sadness that we learned that a dear friend, Bob Ramey, Sr., passed away earlier this week.  Mr. Ramey had been responsible for track preparation at the historic 1/2 for some 40+ years and he will truly be missed.  Always with a smile on his face or a joke to tell he will sorely be missed.  Everyone at Sedalia's State Fair Speedway would like to send our condolences to the Ramey family in their time of sorrow.  Rest in peace Bob.

Missouri State Championships see six titlest crowned!

By Clint Brown
Friday, August 17, 2003
Sedalia, Missouri

With an overflow crowd in the stands and in the pits the 2003 Missouri State Championships took to the track to close out the 101st Missouri State Fair.  With drivers from all four corners of the state, as well as a few from out of the state, everybody was looking for that winning run where they would be named the 2003 Missouri State Champion.  A total of 145 cars packed into the pits on a hot, muggy day to take their shot and have their names placed in the history books.

The Street Stock feature rolled onto the track first and at the drop of the green defending Missouri State Champion John Brooks immediately seized command, but it wouldn't last as he suffered a flat tire before the first lap could be completed.  With Brooks pulling to the infield Osage Beach's Terry Gustin assumed the point with Bobby Shane, Toby Morill and Jeff Duncan apply heavy pressure.  On lap 6 Shane was finally able to work underneath Gustin and assume the lead.  Gustin's night would end a lap later when he would lose a rear wheel going into turn 1 of the eighth lap.  On the restart Shane was able to hold his lead for another 3 laps and cross the line with the 2003 Missouri State Champion title.  Following Shane were Toby Morrill, Jeff Duncan, Brian Mahalovich, and Jason Estes rounding out the top 5.  John Brooks and Terry Gustin came home with heat victories.

The B Modifieds made their first trip to the historic 1/2 mile a memorable one as they would not only be fighting to see who would win the first B Modified feature event at the track, but the Missouri State Championship as well.  The night started off with Lee Roberts getting accustomed to the track rather quickly and bringing home the first heat win while the defending Limitied Late Model state champion, Larry Winn, brought his mount home first in the second heat.  When the feature event got underway Larry Winn immediately jumped to the point with Lee Roberts right on his bumper.  Winn was able to stretch his lead out as the laps wound down with Roberts and Todd Moats fighting it out for second.  Moats slipped back a spot on lap 7 when he gave up the third spot to Don Cox, who had charged up from his seventh starting spot.  Cox was closing in on second when the white flag appeared and wasn't able to mount a charge meanwhile Clint Baker was able to slip around Moats and into the fourth position.  The top five as they came across the line were Larry Winn, Lee Roberts, Don Cox, Clint Baker, and Todd Moats.

The Limited Late Model State Championship came down to a dogfight between one drive making his first trip to the track and another looking to improve on previous runs at the track.  Chuck Melloway raced to the point as green flag waved.  Kevin Coyne jumped in behind Melloway and held second until Virgil Jeffrey was able to work around him on lap 2.  At the same time Rendell Ames worked around Tim Atterberry to round out the top 5.  The top 5 remained the same until coming to the white flag Ames was able to get a run on third running Steve Morton and make the pass.  Morton attempted to go back around Ames, but just couldn't quite make the move stick.  Melloway walked away with the title of Missouri State Champion followed by Virgil Jeffrey, Kevin Coyne, Rendell Ames, and Steve Morton.

The A Modifieds were hotly contested from the drop of the green flag of all four of the heat races, through the dual B features, and finally in the 15 lap A feature.  The Sedalia's State Fair Speedway weekly competitors sent notice in the first heat that they were intent on keeping the Missouri State Championship right at home with Chad Richwine taking the win with Jake Morris, Darrin Goodson, and Scotty Roberts rounding out the transfers to the A.  In the second heat it was just the opposite with the "visitors" dominating the top of the charts with visitors Curt Rackers, Bob Test, and Greg Query in the top three spots with home driver David Farrow taking the final transfer position.  Heat 3 saw a home vs visitor finish with Sonny Kimberling and Steve Potter taking positions 1 & 2 while "visitors" Lee Hibner and Marty Pope came across the line in 3rd & 4th respectively.  Heat four was once again dominated by the weekly drivers with Buddy Thompson holding of the charge of visiting Gary Blackburn Jr., Dave Meyer and Rick Kimberling.  Two B features were contested to narrow the field and several drivers expected to be in the hunt for the championship found themselves running in the B's.  B feature #1 saw several of those drivers with Chad Lyle taking the top spot with Dean Wray, Curt Potter and Howard Hall following him across the line to take transfers.  B feature #2 saw several more of those drivers with Tim Setzer holding on for the win ahead of Gary Fraser, Lonnie Hibner, and Kevin Halderman.  The field rolled off for the A feature with 24 cars taking the green and polesitter Chad Richwine immediately assuming command of the field.  Curt Rackers tucked in behind Richwine and stayed there until a mechanical failure on lap 7 caused him to stop and bring out the yellow.  The field was still being paced by Richwine with Sonny Kimberling, Bob Test, Jake Morris, and Gary Blackburn rounding out the top 5.  At this point Chad Lyle had also worked his way up into the seventh position after starting seventeenth.  When the field went back to green it didn't take long for the shuffling to begin as Lyle moved into the fourth position and a hard charging Rick Kimberling was also making his presence felt.  Lap 9 saw both Lyle and R. Kimberling mover around Bob Test into the third and fourth positions and looking for more.  They both set out to run down Sonny Kimberling and on lap 13 Lyle was able to get around him and move into the second spot.  Try as he might Lyle couldn't find a place to pass Richwine who held on for the win.  Rick Kimberling was able to move around his brother Sonny on the last lap to take home the third spot with Sonny fourth and Gary Blackburn Jr. bringing home fifth.  Several drivers made hard charges to the front along with Lyle (17th to 2nd) and Rick Kimberling (16th to 3rd) like Dean Wray (19th to 6th) and Curt Potter (21st to 7th).

With O'Reilly MSCS Sprint Car drivers Ken Stolfus, Chris Morgan, Danny Billings, and Terry Hinck all taking wins at the historic 1/2 mile they were definitely odds on favorites for one of them to make it two wins at the track this year.  Based off of the heat races one couldn't have argued with the possibility of that happening with the exception of Chris Morgan who was not in attendance.  Heat wins on the night went to Stolfus, Chris Parkinson, and Danny Billings.  The feature lined up with twenty cars taking the green and they were off like horses out of the starting gate with Stolfus grabbing the quick lead over Parkinson and Rob Hockett.  The leaders first encountered lapped traffic on lap 7 with Stolfus making his way through and opening up his lead slightly while Danny Billings was moved his way back up to third challenging Parkinson for the runner up spot.  On lap 9 Billings was able to move around Parkinson and quickly began working on reeling in Stolfus for the lead.  The only caution of the event flew on lap 10 allowing the pack to pull right back up on the bumper of Stolfus, but he was able to jump out to a sizeable lead that couldn't be overcome and went on to take the checkers over Billings, Parkinson, a charging Keith Fridlington, and defending MO State Sprint Car champion Terry Hinck.

The final event of the night saw the ground pounding late models take to the track in a high speed ballet between some of the top late model drivers in the midwest.  With Chad Clark, 2003 W-K Chevrolet-Buick Late Model champion Chris Smyser, and defending Dirtworks Racecars Topless Nationals champion Alan Vaughn taking heat wins it was anybody's guess as to who would come home with the win.  The green flag dropped with Clark and Vaughn quickly establishing themselves at the front and opening up a sizeable margin on the rest of the field.  Behind Clark and Vaughn, Bryon Allison, Richard Foster and Chris Smyser were engaged in their own battle for the third spot with it changing hands several times throughout the event.  A lap 12 caution bunched the field back up for one final time and try as he might Vaughn couldn't make his way around Clark for the lead.  At the same time Allison kept attempting to make his way around Foster for third, but just couldn't make the move stick.  Over the final 8 laps Clark was able to hold off all the advances of Vaughn and take home the win and the Missouri State Championship home with him to Marshall, MO.  Richard Foster was able to hold off another late charge by Bryon Allison for third with Chris Smyser coming home in fourth.

Hall wins the battle, but Potter wins the war!
Smyser sees the sun shine on his title run

By Clint Brown

Sedalia, Missouri

Two weeks ago the title run of one of the Miller Lite Summer Shootout Series divisions was decided while the other two were put on hold.  Finally, with the sun shining and a huge crowd in the stands the combatants took to the track in what was the equivalent of a 12 round title fight to determine the winner.

Howard Hall, of Columbia, did just what he needed to do and looked like he might just squeeze the title away from defending champion Steve Potter who was struggling mid pack.  Hall took advantage of his pole starte to jump out to a lead that he would never give up in leading the entire 15 lap feature.  Buddy Thompson settled into the second position which he would hold until lap 9 when fourth row starting Rick Kimberling made a move to take over the runner-up position.  Following Hall and Kimberling across the line were Buddy Thompson, Dave Meyer, and Jake Morris rounding out the top five.  Back in the pack Steve Potter was languishing in the seventh position unable to close ground while looking for any way to improve and take the title.  Potter kept up the search and was finally able to find a line to the inside of Chad Richwine and move into the sixth position with a move through turns 1 and 2 on the white flag lap.  With the last lap pass on Richwine, Potter was able to secure the 2003 Miller Lite Summer Shootout Series Third National Bank Modified title, his second in a row, by a single point.

In the W-K Chevrolet-Buick Late Model division Chris Smyser came into the evening holding a 32 point edge on his closest competitor Richard Foster.  At the drop of the green flag Centerview, MO's Jason Bodenhamer was able to take advantage of his outside front row starting position and take a lead he would never give up.  Chad Clark was able to get around pole sitter Eric Hammons on the second lap and set chase after Bodenhamer with Foster and Smyser also in the mix.  The top 5 would remain the same until late in the 17th lap when a hard charging Bryon Allison would made his way around Smyser to take over the fourth spot and make several attempts to get around Foster without any luck.  As the field streaked across the line Bodenhamer was followed by Clark, Foster, Allison, and Smyser rounding out the top 5.  With his 5th place finish coupled with the third place finish by Foster, Chris Smyser was able to finish up the season with the W-K Chevrolet-Buick Late Model division championship in the Mike Crump Racing 00s.

A big congratulations goes out to all the winners throughout the season at Sedalia's State Fair Speedway along with the 2003 Champions Gary Hemme (David Malmo Motors Ltd/David Malmo Mitsubishi Street Stocks), Steve Potter (Third National Bank Modifieds), and Chris Smyser (W-K Chevrolet-Buick Late Models).

AT SEDALIA'S STATE FAIR SPEEDWAY DURING THE HOME LUMBER/MILLER LITE SUMMER SHOOTOUT SERIES, ONE CHAMPION KNOWN... TWO CHAMPS; UNKNOWN!
Rain Halts Championship Drive, Championship Features To Be Run During Missouri State Championships August 17th!

By Tom Wilson-pma
Friday, August 1st, 2003
Sedalia, Missouri
Rain at Sedalia's State Fair Speedway on Friday was very good. Then, rain was very bad…. sort of.
A short rain spout early in the afternoon wet the track just right, and saved track Bob Ramey, Sr. a lot of watering time. It also made the track a perfect super-tacky, swift surface. However, while lining up for the 3rd National Bank Modified main, it started raining again. First light, then, much too heavily. It rained out the rest of the program… but only temporarily!

Of the three classes running for the points and real gold in the Home Lumber Company Season Championships, only one, the David Malmo Motors/Malmo Mitsubishi Street Stocks, got to run their 12 lap final feature of the series. With a very close battle between defending champ Bobby Tevis from Kingsville and Gary Hemme from Sedalia, Hemme finished far enough ahead of Tevis to become the new crown wearer for 2003…. by a mere six points!

With the other two classes, the Modifieds and the W-K Chevrolet / Buick Dirt Late Models being foiled to find their champions by the un-welcomed moisture, the events will run according to the line-ups set by the night's qualifying heats and will be the first two racing events on August 17th, the last Sunday of the Missouri State Fair, in the KMZU 100.7 FM Missouri State Championships. The race's name itself is now apropos in more ways than one!

The Todd and Associates LLC Realty Limited Late Model main was full of surprises all the way through. On lap 2, Virgil Jefferey took over the lead and pulled out a straight-away lead. Last week's winner, Shawn Williams, fell into second and was being chased by Mark 'mountain man' Evinger from Bates City. If the entire main affair was only eleven laps long, that would have been the order across the line. But on the final, 12th lap, both Jefferey and Williams had their cars go sour. Jefferey, who kept it running enough to try for the checkers, was soundly passed by the 'mountain man' as they raced down the Power 97 straight toward Steve Pauley's flying checkers. Evinger surprisingly found himself as being the fourth victor out of five LLM events so far this year. Jefferey barely held on for second, Jim Wilson, who came late and had to start at the back, zipped up to third, fourth was found by Lance Elwell while 'mountain boy' Owen Evinger topped the top five.

Bobby Shane from Sedalia, the reigning 2001 Street Stock champ, finally had his car hold together for the first time this year. And in doing so, his machine let Bobby score his first seasonal win. Hemme ran a comfortable second by staying out of trouble, Earl Sullins was a solid third and Bobby Gustin staked down fourth. Points leader and defending champ Bobby Tevis could only muster fifth.

Rains then came in short, but intensive bursts to force the rest of the evening to be cancelled.

The night's activities were started by Fast Track Ministries' Jeff Rabon with his well appreciated invocation and Sedalia's Lovette turned in dual-duties as the singer of the National Anthem and the trophy presenter in Union Savings Bank Winner's Circle.
