Bradley Charges to Fall Classic Victory

Jeffrey A. Bayless

Boswell, IN (Oct 2) Kamp Motor Speedway outside of Boswell, IN closed out it’s 2004 season with it’s second annual Fall Classic, paying $2000 to win to the UMP Late Models and $1000 to win to the UMP Modified division.  Even though the air temperature felt more inclined to be a Winter Classic, the Fall Classic indeed was a classic show for the fans who braved the near artic temperatures.

Paris, IL native Michael Bradley topped off his 2nd consecutive Kamp Motor Speedway track championship by piloting his Budda Racing Masterbilt from an 8th row starting spot to victory lane, the second time this season Bradley has used the multiple grooved clay track to charge from the back to the front on this 3/8ths mile oval.  The feature event started off with the front row of Ted Loomis and Dan Walden circling the track side by side followed by Greg Johnson, Dick Potts, and Richie Hedrick with Loomis settling into the lead on the second circuit.  Hedrick moved into the 3rd spot by the 5th lap and 10 laps in he joined the fray for the top spot with Loomis and Walden who had been battling from the onset of the race.  Hedrick using slower traffic to his advantage shot by Walden on the 16th circuit, shortly after Loomis had dropped from the contest with a punctured tire, only to tangle with the slower car of Bill Luse one lap later bringing out the caution as Luse spun into the turn 4 barrier.  Track officials, determining the accident was caused by over aggressiveness on the part of Hedrick, sent the leader to the tail of the field for the restart putting Walden back in the top spot followed by Johnson, Potts, Jim Laws, and Bradley.  Bradley used the restart to make his move, jumping to the rim of the track as the green flew and was in the third spot by the completion of the 17th lap.  3 laps later Bradley dispatched Johnson and set sail for the lead grabbing the point from Walden on the 22nd circuit.  Bradley then cruised to the $2000 payday as he crossed the stripe for his 7th feature win of the season at Kamp Motor Speedway.  Following Bradley to the stripe was Walden, Johnson, Hedrick (from the tail of the field on the lap 17 restart), Potts, Laws, Jammie Wilson, Gary May, Chris Dick, and Rohn Moon.

In UMP Modified action Jeff Houchens, Chuck Haga, and Matt Bex circled the track 3 wide for the lead at the drop of the green flag with Bex grabbing the point on the 2nd circuit followed by Houchens, Haga, and Greg Davis ahead of the pack, most of which was battling 2 and 3 wide all the way to the tail of the field.  Bex and Houchens separated from the field with Haga rejoining the fight for the point near the half way point of the 20 lap feature.  Houchens began dropping back from the lead battle as Haga pulled along side Bex on the 13th circuit and this duo battled wheel to wheel for much of the duration of the 20 lap race.  Haga edged ahead on the 17th lap only to have Bex charge back as they took the white flag, once again neck and neck.  At the stripe it was Bex by a nose over the 2004 track champion HagaHouchens, Scott Bull, and Don Kiger rounded out the top 5.  The modified feature was ultra competitive from front to back with all 20 cars finishing on the lead lap.

Weaver Prevails at The 2nd Annual Kamp 50
Jeffrey A. Bayless

Boswell, IN (Sept 18)  Forty Late Models were on hand to try their hand at the Kamp 50 a $5000 to win event at the 3/8ths mile speedplant known as Kamp Motor Speedway.  Kevin Weaver of Gibson City, IL led the entire 50 lap distance in his Nu-Way Transportation Services Inc sponsored Hixson Racing Engine powered CJ Rayburn race car.

Wes Steidinger started off the night by setting the fast lap timing in at 14.222 around the red clay oval.  RJ Gall would lead the first lap of the first heat before drifting high in turn 2 on the second lap in an ill handling race car surrendering the point to Bob Pohlman who held off a determined Wes Steidinger for the heat win.  Chris Dick and Rohn Moon also transferred through the first heat.  Kevin Weaver took home the honors in the second heat followed by Richie Hedrick, Dan Walden, and Ted Loomis who came from the rear of the field after struggling during time trials.  Heat 3 saw defending and current track champion, Michael Bradley come out on top of a 4 way battle for the lead on the first lap and went on to grab the checkers in front of Eric Smith, Jason Feger, and Zach Carney.  Greg Johnson paced the way in the 4th and final heat ahead of Gary May, Steve Barnett, and Roger Long.  Mark Stetler made a thrilling pass on the last lap to win the first conci ahead of Jim Curry and Mike England held off Jim Laws in the second last chance race to fill out the 20 car field.

Weaver and Pohlman raced into turn 1 side by side at the start of the feature with Weaver gaining the edge into 3 and 4 with Johnson, Bradley, and Steidinger in hot pursuit.  Weaver raced out to a straightaway lead by the 10th circuit but saw it erased 1 lap later when the first of 4 caution flags flew.  Weaver who had built the straight away lead while his foes were battling for position behind him now saw the field line up on his tail led by Johnson, Steidinger, Hedrick, and Pohlman.  Weaver would have trouble shaking the pack once the action resumed with Johnson staying in close contact while fending off challenges from Steidinger.  As the leaders were trying to negotiate traffic on a slick racing surface late in the race Weaver's toughest challenge came about as Johnson got into the back of Weaver heading into 1 on the 42nd lap getting the eventual winner a bit sideways. Johnson proved to be the gentleman on this occasion lifting out of the throttle enough to let the leader regain his mount and continue on.  The slick conditions made passing at a premium in the waning laps and Weaver held his line, never making a mistake to create an opening for his opponents as he picked up his second feature win of the year at Kamp Motor Speedway.  Johnson, Steidinger, Bradley, Hedrick, May, Barnett, Smith, Carney, and Laws rounded out the top 10.

Weaver, who was celebrating his victory by greeting his fans and signing autographs next to his winning entry in the pit area said the keys to his victory were pacing himself and not making any mistakes on the unusual slick racing surface that is known for it's 2 and 3 wide racing on most occasions.  Asked about the incident with Johnson he said "I lifted when I saw a puff of smoke come out of the rear of the GRT car in front of me (Ted Loomis) and pow I got nailed in the rear."  Weaver who had a rough start to his 2004 season has turned things around in the second half of his campaign picking up several wins including the top spot in the Northern Allstar Late Model Series 5 race Illinois Speedweek mini-series in August.

Tim Reynolds led the first 6 laps of the UMP Modified feature before fast qualifier Chuck Haga using the rim of the track worked his way to the point and went on to his second feature win of the evening.  Reynolds, Derrick Losh, Jim Bailey, and Arby Burton rounded out the top 5 in modified action.  Haga also won the super street feature holding off a tough challenge from Jonah Buyno.  David Hurst picked up the street stock win beating point leader Lee Hall to the stripe by a fender's length.

Smith Captures NALMS Race at Kamp Motor Speedway
Jeffrey A. Bayless

Boswell, IN (Aug 21)  The Northern Allstar Late Model Series (NALMS) rolled into Kamp Motor Speedway outside of Boswell, IN on Saturday evening for some great racing action.  Eric Smith of Bloomington, IL drove his Wall Realtors, Thies Trucking, Carri Scharf Trucking, Accurade Towing, Powder Coating Unlimited, Paul's Auto Body, Runion Engines, and Southdown Wrecker sponsored machine to a $2000 payday in the 30 lap main event.

With 22 cars on hand Rohn Moon set the fast mark for the evening with a lap of 13.216.  Heat race action saw Jason Feger get by Dan Walden 6 laps in to win the first heat with Walden holding onto second ahead of Moon, Mark Weisnicht, and Ed Woodard.  Smith won the second heat holding off a late charge by Zach Carney with Brian Shirley, Dick Potts, and Larry Raines finishing out the top 5.  Roger Long won the third heat ahead of Michael Bradley, Duane Chamberlain, Shawn Negengard, and Jim Laws.  With a sufficient amount of cars scratching for the evening the conci was waved and Rob Starkey, Cory Rolfe, Matt Davis, and Scott DuVall were added to the field.

Smith converted the pole to the lead ahead of Feger, Long, Carney, and Moon.  The top 5 remained pretty much the same until a lap 10 restart started the action rolling.  Both Carney and Moon bypassed Long on the restart and Long soon found himself further back as he got over the cushion in turns 3 and 4 on the 13th circuit dropping him back several more positions.  Carney's solid run came to an end at the half way mark with a tire as the leaders were approaching traffic.  Feger made a quick pass of Smith as they started to deal with the slower cars but Feger's tour up front was short lived as Smith charged back by one lap later.  A caution cleared the track in front of the leaders and when the green flew again Smith sped away as Bradley started moving forward grabbing the third spot from Moon and setting his sights on the top 2.  As the top 3 separated from the pack the battle for fourth was heating up as Moon, Shirley, and Long were mixing it up and swapping positions on a regular basis as the race wound down.  2 laps from the finish, Feger lost air pressure in his right rear allowing Bradley to storm by and make a last ditch effort to grab the win.  It, however, was to little to late as Smith held on for the win ahead of Bradley, Moon, Shirley, and Long.  Feger limped home to a 6th place finish with Laws, Chamberlain, Rolfe, and Walden wrapping up the top 10.

Contingency Awards went to Rohn Moon with the Petersen Aluminum, Bulzilla Graphics fast time award, Roger Long with the Scott Performance Heat Race Winner Award, Eric Smith with the Dyer Rods Pole SItter Award and the K Motion feature winner award, Jim Laws with the PPM Hard Charger Award, and Shawn Negengard with the Wick Oil/Sunoco Hard Luck Driver award.

NALMS racing action resumes next Saturday, August 28th in Bardstown, KY at The Bluegrass Speedway where the stars of NALMS will battle for a $5000 top prize.

In Modified action Jesse Cramer charged to the point and led the whole race to pick up the feature win although he withstood many challenges from Dale Hayes.  Hayes himself barely held onto the runner up spot as hard charging Jeff Houchens almost got him at the stripe.  Derek Losh and Bob Pohlman rounded out the top 5.  Heat wins went to Hayes, Cramer, and Arby Burton.  Jarrod Warner grabbed the conci win.

In other racing action, Chuck Haga won the survival of the fittest battle in the Super Streets as attrition dropped many of the top runners from the competition before it ended.  Keith Sweat and Ryan Huddleston came home in 2nd and 3rd.  In Street Stock action Dave Rudisill grabbed the point on lap 3 and went onto victory.  Ian Keller and Matt Orns came home 2nd and 3rd.

Walden, Lakey Victorious in Kamp Action
Jeffrey A. Bayless

Boswell, IN (Aug 7)  It was fan appreciation day at Kamp Motor Speedway outside of Boswell, IN and the stand were full to witness some great racing action on this absolutely gorgeous August day.

In UMP Late Model action, The Legend, Dick Potts, led the pack through turns 1 and 2 at the start but Dan Walden came charging back through turns 3 and 4 to gain the edge at the stripe with Jim Laws, Ted Loomis, and Bob Pohlman Jr. coming hard behind them.  Potts and Walden continued to swap the lead until the third lap when Jason Feger, driving the car normally driven by Eric Smith, got sideways in turn 2 leaving Bill Luse no where to go but hard into the side of the disabled machine leaving both cars heavily damaged.  With Walden leading at the restart, Potts quickly challenged and retook the lead as the top 2 pulled away from the field as Loomis, Laws, and Pohlman jockeyed for position behind them.  Ten laps in to the 25 lap main event, Potts had a 5 car length lead and was approaching the back markers with Walden comfortably in second ahead of a fight for third between Pohlman and Laws.  A spin by Kerry Mathew slowed the action on the 13th circuit closing the gap Potts had built up.  On the restart the top three of Potts, Walden, and Pohlman sped away as Loomis and Zach Carney split the car of Jim Laws dropping him back to 6th but Loomis would get a little out of shape himself a lap later dropping back several spots himself.  Potts was unable to get away from the pack this time and Walden moved in for the kill on the 15th lap sliding by Potts with Pohlman following one lap later dropping Potts to third.  As the race wound down Pohlman made a valiant effort to catch and pass Walden but was unable to get the job done as Walden picked up the win followed by Pohlman, and Potts who held off a late race charge by Carney to hold onto third.  Michael Bradley, Larry Raines, Loomis, Cory Rolfe, Jason Beier, and Kevin Madison rounded out the top 10.  Potts and Walden picked up the heat wins earlier in the evening.

The UMP Modified action turned out to be a survival of the fittest race as attrition and multiple caution periods plagued the event.  Jason Lakey grabbed the point at the start followed by Chuck Haga, Dale Hayes, Tim Reynolds, and a side by side battle between Jarrod Warner and Derek Losh.  Tom Staggs created the first caution on the third circuit when he looped his ride around in the first turn and Tim Reynolds, Arby Burton, Kevin Davis, and Larry Matillo were eliminated in a restart accident caused when Reynolds and Losh got together sending Reynolds spinning in front of the field.  On the restart Dale Hayes made a move into second and was challenging for the lead but a spin by John Moore slowed the action once again with the top 5 as Lakey, Hayes, Haga, Losh, and Jeff Houchens.  On the restart Hayes went to work on Lakey again as Houchens bypassed Losh and then Haga before a spin by Mike Staggs slowed the action once again on the 9th circuit.  Houchens continued his move forward on the restart bypassing Hayes and setting his sights on the lead taking the point from Lakey before a lap 13 caution caused by a 3 car accident on the front stretch slowed the field for the last time.  Houchens separated from the field on the restart as Hayes and Lakey battled for the second spot as Haga and Warner battled behind them.  Lakey was able to shake free from Hayes and found a groove on the rim and set sail for the leader catching him as they came to the white flag.  The duo raced the last lap with no one with a clear advantage and as they came out of 4 and headed for the checkers they made contact causing Lakey's machine to get slightly airborne as they crossed the stripe.  Lakey picked up the win as he edged Houchens to the stripe by a bumpers length with Hayes, Warner, and Haga rounding out the top 5.  Heat wins went to Lakey, Haga, and Reynolds.

In Super Street action Brian Rickey led from flag to flag with a dominating win with Chuck Haga his closest competitor.  In Street Stock action Matt Orns picked up the win edging Dave Rudisill at the stripe in an exciting finish that involved a post race accident in turn one as cars spun, collided, and flipped trying to avoid a fuel cell that had fallen out of a car.

Weaver Grabs Much Needed Win at Kamp Motor Speedway
Jeffrey A. Bayless

Boswell, IN (July 24th)  With cooler air than normal for a late July evening the Northern Allstar Late Model Series along with The Challenge of Champions Late Model Series invaded Kamp Motor Speedway in a co-sanctioned event on Saturday evening with 30 cars competing for the $2000 top prize.  As usual the racing was top notch at this 3/8ths mile clay oval outside of Boswell, IN.

After driver introductions and a four wide parade lap the field of 20 settled back into their respective rows of two and the high horse powered machines screamed alive as the green flag waved.  Kevin Weaver charged to the point coming out of the first set of turns with the lead followed by Michael Bradley, Dennis Erb Jr., Jason Feger, and Roger Long who got a bit sideways coming out of the second turn creating a bottleneck allowing the front four to pull away a bit but Long was able to hold the 5th spot.  Weaver continued to hold the point as NALMS point leader, Erb, was enjoying the company of local favorite, Bradley in a side by side battle that lasted until the 5th lap when Erb was able to complete the pass.  At the 10 lap mark Erb had reeled in the leader and was beginning to put heat on him as Bradley and Long battled for the third spot ahead of Juan Grino but the action was soon slowed by the race's first caution as fast qualifier Wes Steidinger spun his mount in turn 4.  Weaver got a good restart, putting some distance between him and Erb and stretched it out to about 5 car lengths before reaching the back markers on the 19th lap at which time Erb began to close the gap a bit.  But 2 laps later Weaver was granted a clean track when Mark Stetler ran into problems in the back stretch bringing out the races second and final caution.  At the restart Weaver and Erb, using a 2 lapped car cushion, quickly separated from the pack as Jayme Zidar moved into the mix flying by Grino and Long on the restart.  Also coming from back in the pack was Brian Shirley who had started 17th and was on a tear in the last leg of the race moving into the 4th spot bypassing Long and Zidar on the 23rd circuit.  As the race neared the end the top four of Weaver, Erb, Bradley, and Shirley were all comfortable in their position far enough ahead of their nearest competitor to not feel any pressure and not close enough to the car in front to make a charge without a mistake from the pilot they were chasing.  But for 5th on back things were quite dicey.  Long, Bob Pohlman, Zidar, Grino, Shawn Negengard and Wes Steidinger were all in a tight pack racing for position.  This set up an interesting last lap as Grino and Zidar got together coming out of 4 to take the white flag allowing several cars to gain position as these two fought to keep their mounts headed in the right direction.  At the stripe it was Weaver, Erb, Bradley, Shirley, Long, Pohlman, Negengard, Steidinger, Jim Laws, and Grino coming home first through tenth.  This victory was a welcome relief for The Flatland Flash, Kevin Weaver and his fans as the 2004 season has been wrought with bad luck to this point.  In preliminary action Erb, Feger, Bradley, and Weaver picked up heat wins with Shirley claiming the conci.

In UMP Modified action the front row of Chuck Haga and Mike Kingma raced the first few circuits door to door until Haga went up in smoke in turn three on the third circuit brining out the races first caution.  On the restart Jeff Houchens and Arby Burton joined Kingma in a three wide battle for the lead with Houchens coming out on top followed by Kingma and Burton.  As the race neared the 5 lap point Kingma began dropping back loosing positions to Burton, Tim Reynolds, Jason Lakey, and Ryan Bowman in 2 laps.  Houchens stretched out his lead as Burton and Reynolds fought for the runner-up spot with Reynolds eventually coming out on top of that battle but ran out of time in his search for the lead coming up a few car lengths short in the end as Houchens picked up his first win of the season at Kamp.  Burton, Lakey, and Bowman rounded out the top 5.  Heat wins went to Kingma, Haga, and Houchens, with Kevin Davis winning the last chance race.

In other racing action Brian Rickey led the first 19 laps of the 25 lap $1000 to win Super Street feature before fading and handing the lead to point leader Butch Meeker who was himself passed with 3 laps to go by Rick Hufford who picked up the win.  In Street Stock action Matt Orns led the first 10 laps before Lee J Hall worked by to pick up the win.

Zidar & Cramer Pick Up Wins in Rain Delayed Kamp Motor Speedway Action
Jeffrey A. Bayless

Boswell, IN (July 17th)  Mid afternoon showers forced the track crew at Kamp Motor Speedway to put in an extra effort to get the track ready to run by the normal starting time only to have another shower system move through right as hot laps were being completed taking the track back to square one.  Bob and Gayle Kamp, the promoters and owners of Kamp Motor Speedway, had had enough of the rainouts this season and with the forecast and radar calling for an end to the rain they decided to make a go of it.  The evening began with the fireworks program that was rained out on July 3rd and the first race rolled out of the chute at 9:54 PM setting up what would be an extra late night of racing, however the fans who had stuck it out were in for some blazing fast racing action due to the extra ordinary efforts of the Kamp Motor Speedway staff.

A handful of UMP Late Model drivers, including top runners Ted Loomis, Bob Pohlman, and Kevin Weaver, decided to pack it in before the decision was made to make a go of it, but those that stayed put on an excellent display of racing.  Shawn Negengard shot to the early lead followed by Jayme Zidar, Jason Feger, Michael Bradley, and Zach Carney.  The top 5 stayed the same until a lap 7 restart gave Zidar the opportunity he had been looking for.  Zidar jumped under Negengard at the drop of the green and completed the pass coming out of the 4th turn to complete the lap.  Zidar began to separate from the pack as Negengard continued to slip backwards with Feger taking the second spot from him on the 12th lap and Bradley working by right before Jerry Lockwood climbed the front stretch wall and flipped his mount on it's top on the 14th circuit.  On the restart Zidar began pulling away once again as Dick Potts came from out of nowhere passing 3 cars to climb into the 4th spot and put the heat on Bradley for third.  As the race came down to the wire Feger was reeling in Zidar but came up a couple car lengths short giving Zidar his first ever win at Kamp Motor Speedway.  Bradley held onto third with Negengard regaining the 4th spot from Potts who finished 5th.  Carney, Dan Walden, Jim Laws, Duane Chamberlain, and Bill Luse wrapped up the other top 10 spots in the feature.  Zidar and Negengard won the heats for the evening.

The UMP Modifieds had a special 30 lap event on tap for the evening for a top prize of $1200.  Pole sitter Jarrod Warner got the feature off to a bad start when he looped his ride around in the first turn causing an 11 car pile-up taking the cars of Brian McDanial, Chad Osterhoff, Ryan Bowman, Jason Lakey, and Larry Matillo from the action.  Warner and JR Coyner were able to continue after repairs to their machines but had to restart from the rear due to working on their cars under the red flag.  When the action resumed Chuck Haga shot to the early lead followed by Jesse Cramer, Josh Ferguson, Keary Landis, and Dale Hayes with the top 3 separating from the pack.  By the completion of the 5th lap Haga was pulling away with the lead as Ferguson was working on Cramer for the second spot but two laps later Haga's lead was erased when Michael Kettnich brought out the caution with a spin in turn 2.  On the restart Cramer moved up and got on the outside of Haga and was able to work his way past on the 9th circuit.  Cramer began to pull away as Haga had his hands full holding back Ferguson with Ferguson getting by on the 14th lap setting up a running order at the half way mark of Cramer, Ferguson, Haga, Hayes, and Tommy Kroll.  But Ferguson slipped over the cushion allowing Haga and Hayes to fly by on the 16th circuit but Hayes dropped from the action one lap later moving Ferguson back to third.  Haga began to reel in Cramer who had built a 10 car length lead and was right on his bumper as the caution came out with 2 to go when John Moore spun in turn 4.  When the green came back out for the two lap dash Haga gave it all he had pulling inside Cramer in the last set of turns but at the stripe it was Cramer picking up the $1200 paycheck.  Ferguson, Jeff Houchens, and Kroll rounded out the top 5.  Heat wins went to Warner, Cramer, McDanial, and Haga with Ron Mathys and Kroll winning the last chance races.

In other racing action Butch Meeker led the last lap to get the win as race long leader Chuck Haga shredded a tire coming to the white flag.  In Street Stock action Lee J Hall picked up the win when early leader Ian Keller dropped from the action.

O'Neal Claims Round 3 of the Summernationals
Jeffrey A. Bayless

(June 23 Boswell, IN)  The UMP Summernationals invaded this small Indiana community on Wednesday at Kamp Motor Speedway outside of Boswell and brought with them 45 of the finest machine/driver late model combinations to compete for the $6000 dollar to win main event in the 3rd round of this prestigious series.

The evening began with time trials and it was a huge advantage to have had an early number drawn as the track surface slowed by about  1/2 of a second in averages from the start of time trials to the end.  Don O'Neal set the water mark at 13.810 followed by Mark Stetler at 13.995 and Jeep VanWormer at 14.038.

The first three rows of the feature line-up were set by the top six finishers of the 9 car 9 lap dash.  O'Neal drew the pole for this dash and led from flag to flag with Jeep VanWormer making a move high late in the race to move into second around Michael Bradley.  Rodney Melvin, Terry English, and Randy Korte rounded out the top 6 finishers.

Starting positions 7 through 18 were determined through the heat races with the top three finishers from each of the four heats moving on to the 40 lap main event.  Heat 1 saw Kevin Weaver lead from start to finish coming home ahead of Roger Long and round two of the Summernationals winner Brian Shirley who had charged hard from mid pack to come home third.  Heat 2 saw Ted Loomis and Greg Johnson both come from the middle of the pack to finish one two ahead of John Provenzano.  In the third heat Mark Stetler held off Shawn Negengard and Duke Whiseant, who had been relegated to the rear as a result of contact he made early in the race causing a caution, for the win.  Monday nights winner, Shannon Babb, ran away with heat 4 coming home well ahead of Richie Hedrick and Mark Faust.

Starting positions 19 and 20 were determined by the winner of each of 2 conciliation races.  In the first semi Wes Steidinger made a late pass of Jim Laws to claim the win and in the second Juan Grino used the high side to shoot past Steve Casebolt early and sped away to the victory.  2 provisionals were then added to the field to make it a 22 car starting line-up with Jim Laws and Justin Allgaier getting the nod for those two spots.

Then it was feature time, with the field taking a 4 wide parade lap with fireworks lighting the blackened sky before the field returned to its 11 rows of two to roar out of turn four as the green flag dropped.  Don O'Neal slid in front of Jeep VanWormer at the completion of the first lap to take the lead with Michael Bradley holding third ahead of a three car battle for fourth involving Randy Korte, Shannon Babb (who had started 10th), and Rodney Melvin.  The first lap ended in caution however as Justin Allgaier and Juan Grino got tangled in the front stretch ending Allgaier's night.  On the restart the top three pulled away as Terry English and Kevin Weaver joined the fray to make it a five car duel for the 4th spot.  O'Neal settled into the lead and began to stretch it out as Babb cleared himself from the heated battle behind the front runners and began to track down Bradley and VanWormer who were engaged in a battle for second.  By the half way point Babb had moved into second behind O'Neal who had driven away to a straight away lead.  VanWormer's car began to lose it's handle at this point as well as Bradley moved past and VanWormer began slipping backwards at a rapid rate.  With 10 laps to checkers O'Neal found himself engaged in heavy lapped traffic and unable to navigate through quickly, giving new hope to Babb who began chipping away at the straightaway lead with renewed vigor.  Babb gave it all he had, but in the end he was a few laps short of catching O'Neal as he came up 3 car lengths short at the stripe making Don O'Neal the third different winner in as many events in the early stages of this year's version of the UMP Summernationals. Bradley held onto third with Terry English, Greg Johnson, Randy Korte, Kevin Weaver, Ted Loomis, Duke Whiseant, and Jeep VanWormer rounding out the top 10.

The UMP Modifieds were also on the card for the evening having a 20 lap $1000 to win main event.  Fast qualifier, Chuck Haga, held off Bent Londeree to lead the first lap with Dan Hamstra, Arby Burton, and Jeff Leka in close pursuit.  5 laps in and it was a four car break away with Burton falling back from the leaders.  By the half way point Haga had began to establish a comfortable lead as Londeree and Hamstra duked it out for second 3 car lengths in front of Farmer City hot shoe, Jeff Leka.  Then Haga's worst case scenario unfolded, a caution with 6 laps to go erased his lead and put Hamstra on his tail.  On the restart Haga and Hamstra pulled away as Londeree, Leka, and Tommy Kroll engaged in a battle for the third spot.  With three to go Hamstra was able to pull along side Haga on the high side of the track prompting Haga to move his line up trying to hold Hamstra back.  Hamstra countered by moving into Haga's prior line and the race was on with Hamstra nosing ahead at the white flag and pulling out the win by a car length at the checkers.  Londeree held onto third ahead of Leka and Kroll.  Heat wins went to Haga, Londeree, Leka, and Burton with Elvin Herschberger and Jason Lakey taking the last chance races.

(June 5, Boswell, IN)  An absolute beautiful day gave way to an excellent evening to enjoy some of the areas finest racing at Kamp Motor Speedway a 3/8ths mile clay oval outside of Boswell, IN.  The track was in excellent shape for racing making for some fast and furious action on the red clay surface.

The UMP Late Model 25 lap main event saw Ted Loomis lead the pack from the pole through turns one and two but Michael Bradley pulled along side through turns 3 and 4 and led by a nose at the start/finish line.  The first lap came to a close with a 4 car mishap right under the flagstand at the tail of the field.  The cars of Kevin Madison, Tom Treadway, Ron Starkey, and Rob England all were facing the wrong direction but all were able to continue on as well.  As the racing resumed Loomis quickly challenged Bradley for the top spot while the 3rd place machine of Dan Walden drifted up high in 3 and 4 allowing Mark Stetler and Jayme Zidar to shoot by.  Walden quickly regained his composure and set sail towards the front again quickly retaking the spot from Zidar and reeling in Stetler to battle him for third.  Meanwhile back up front Loomis continued to peck away at Bradley until he was able to slide his mount in front of him coming out of 4 on the 5th lap and put a clamp on the battle for the lead.  The race quickly became  a four car battle as Loomis had an ever so slight lead over Bradley who had Stetler and Walden nipping at his heels.  The complexion of the race up front began top take a new shape though as on the 9th lap Stetler who was having one of his best runs of the season slowed and pulled off the track followed two laps later by Bradley who went pit side with mechanical problems as well.  Filling the void as these two hot shoes fell by the way side was the fast qualifier for the evening, Jim Laws.  Laws was coming hard from his 4th row starting spot moving around Walden on the 10th lap into 3rd and moved into 2nd when Bradley pulled off of the circuit.  At the half way point Loomis was beginning to stretch his lead out over Laws with about a 3 car length advantage over the second place machine.  Zidar was engaged with Walden for third a few car lengths back of Laws.  As the race came down to the last 5 laps the leaders began to run into some slower traffic but Loomis continued to stretch the lead and raced onto the checkers for his second feature win in as many days (Kankakee June 4th) however Walden used the traffic to retake the runner-up spot from Laws a lap and a half before the checkers.  Zidar raced home 4th with Bill Luse, Cory Rolfe, Juan Grino, Robert Johnson, Kevin Madison, and Barry Carlson rounding out the top ten.  Heat wins went to Loomis and Bradley and Ted Loomis not only took home the $1500 feature winners purse but also took the point lead from Michael Bradley with Bradley's early exit from the feature.

In UMP Modified action the initial start was aborted when a very scary accident between Tim Reynolds and Larry Matillo happened in turn 3 ending up with Matillo's car on it's roof after going end over end.  Once the track was cleared Tommy Kroll jumped to the early lead ahead of Ryan Bowman and Elvin Herschberger.  Bowman dropped below Kroll on the second lap and edged ahead of him at the stripe but Herschberger wanted a bit of the action as well and went to the very top of the track making it a three wide race for the lead through turns 1 and 2 on the third circuit.  When the caution came out for a spin by Tom Staggs 2 laps later they were scored with Herschberger leading followed by Bowman, Kroll, Don Kiger, and Brian McDanial who had come from row 7 of the starting grid.  When the action resumed Herschberger fought off a quick challenge from Bowman with the real battle being for third between Kiger and Kroll.  McDanial's impressive charge came to an end prematurely with lap 9 mechanical problems.  At the half way point it was Hershberger with a 5 car length lead over Bowman, Kiger, and Kroll.  Sandwiched between a couple of cautions for spins by Michael Kettnich, Kiger was able to overtake Bowman for 2nd setting up a battle for the lead over the last five laps after the last restart.  Kiger using the low groove was able to pull alongside Herschberger in the turns but Herschberger using the high groove was able to get the gas a little earlier using the high side and would edge ahead down the straights.  At the line it was Herschberger by 3/4ths of a car length over Kiger.  Kroll was able to bypass Bowman as well in the waning laps with Jim Moore rounding out the top 5.  Heat wins went to fast qualifier Kroll, Bowman, and Herschberger with Kevin Davis winning the last chance race.

In other racing action Troy Overstreet and Mike Roundtree put on a side by side racing display early in the super street feature but Overstreet would spin and go to the tail and Roundtree would go pitside with mechanical problems leaving the battle for the win between Chuck Haga and Rick Hufford.  Haga would all but the last two laps after Roundtree's departure before Hufford was able to slide by.  In Street Stock action it was Dave Rudisill from start to finish running away with his 3rd feature win in a row beating Ed Martin to the stripe by 1/2 a straightaway.

Erb Makes it 2 NALMS Shows In A Row
Jeffrey A. Bayless

(May 15, Boswell, IN)  It was an unseasonably cool evening for May but with the Northern All-star Late Model Series (NALMS) visiting Kamp Motor Speedway, a 3/8ths mile clay oval outside of Boswell, IN, a healthy crowd of racing fans braved the chill to watch 34 UMP Late Models shoot it out for the $2000 top prize.  With all four classes sporting car counts in excess of 30 cars these fans were in for a great night of racing on this well prepared fast dirt track.

The 30 lap NALMS feature started with the front row of Jayme Zidar and Brian Shirley circling the track side by side with Dennis Erb, Eric Smith, and Steve Barnett battling for 3rd behind them.  When the first caution flew at the end of lap 2 for Dan Walden, who found himself facing the wall in turn 4, it was Shirley leading the pack by a nose.  When the action resumed Zidar made a quick challenge for the lead, but Shirley was able to hold him off as Zidar quickly had his hands full with NALMS point leader, Dennis Erb.  Erb worked his way around Zidar as Barnett and Ted Loomis relegated Smith two spots back in the running order to 6th in the ensuing laps.  Barnett quickly moved into third around Zidar as Erb was inching closer to taking the lead from Shirley.  On the 9th circuit Erb made his move, pulling to the inside of Shirley and securing the lead one lap later.  As Erb pulled away from the field and Shirley slowly slid backwards with the battle to watch being the fight for second between Loomis and Barnett.  Loomis found a fast groove at the top of the track but Barnett was hanging tough in his lower lane of the speedway and they spent much of the second half of the race battling side by side.  As the race was drawing to a close Erb began to run into traffic and the battling duo for second quickly began to reel him in.  At the checkers it was Erb by a couple of car lengths with Loomis edging Barnett by a nose ahead of Kevin Weaver who was coming fast towards the end of the race.  Eric Smith, Shirley, Wes Steidinger, Rohn Moon, Michael Bradley, and Tim Bowersock rounded out the top ten.  Heat wins went to Smith, Erb, Shirley, and Zidar with Duane Chamberlin winning the last chance race.  Fast time for the evening was set by Michael Bradley, just a tick off of the track record, at 13.166.

The start of the UMP Modified feature saw Jarred Warner, Elvin Herschberger, and Chuck Haga go storming into one three wide with Haga settling into the lead by the time they reached the starting stripe to complete lap one.  Haga quickly began to distance himself from Herschberger with Brian McDanial settling into third and Warner embroiled in a hot battle for 4th with Dale Hayes, Dan Hamstra, Tommy Kroll, Jesse Cramer, and Tim Reynolds.  By the time they had reached the half way point Herschberger had reeled in Haga and the battle for the lead was on.  Over the course of the next several laps, Herschberger made several attempts to get by but Haga was able to fend him off every time.  As the race reached the closing laps traffic began to play a role allowing McDanial to catch the top two and make it a three car battle.  But as the leaders took the white flag Jason Lakey and Kevin Davis got together between turns 3 and 4 bringing out the caution setting up a one lap shootout with a clear track in front of the leaders.  Haga took the green and white and raced for the checkers as Herschberger had to fend off a challenge from McDanial edging him by a half a car at the stripe.  Hamstra came home in 4th charging hard from his 11th starting spot and Warner rounded out the top 5.  Heat wins went to Warner, Haga, Herschberger, and McDanial with Larry Matillo and David Daughtery taking the last chance races.  Tommy Kroll set the mark in qualifying with a lap of 15.132.

In other racing action Lee J Hall won the street stock feature leading flag to flag in a caution and red flag filled feature holding off a late challenge from Ed Martin.  In Super Street action Brian Rickey maneuvered around Butch Meeker with 9 to go and held onto the lead to pick up the feature win.

Competition Eats Long's Dust in Kamp Opener

Jeffrey A. Bayless

(April 17th Boswell, IN)  The spring air was very pleasant for an opening night attraction at Kamp Motor Speedway outside of Boswell, Indiana and that brought a house full of fans and a pit full of machines for the inaugural event of the 2004 season.  25 UMP Late Models and 38 Ump Modifieds were present to try their hand at this fast clay oval.

The Late Model action started with Eddie Leviner, who had had handling problems all night kissing the wall under the flag stand ending his abysmal start to the season on a sour note and aborting the initial start of the 25 lap feature.  The next start saw Russ Scheffler, Dan Walden, and Jim Laws go three wide into the first set of turns with Walden pulling out the lead through 3 and 4 as Roger "The Racing Farmer" Long joined the mix behind him.  Walden seemed to have the race well in control with a sizeable lead over the always-fast Long when his ride abruptly lost power heading into 1 on the 5th circuit and came to rest in the middle of the backstretch.  Scheffler made the most of the opportunity and pulled past Long on the restart through 1 and 2, but the wily Long reclaimed the lead through 3 and 4 but Scheffler would have one more opportunity 2 laps later when the races last caution came out when Guy Volk ran into problems on the frontstretch coming to rest against the retaining wall approaching turn 1.   On the restart Scheffler pulled along side Long and the duo raced side by side for the next lap and a half before Long settled back into the lead and he never looked back from that point on.  Scheffler and Laws battled it out for the runner up spot with Laws taking the spot with 5 to go relegating Scheffler to the 3rd spot at the finish.  Defending track champion Michael Bradley came home fourth ahead of Bill Luse who was later disqualified for being to light on the scales after the feature allowing Brett "The Jet" Seivert to lay claim to the 5th place money.  Heat wins went to Scheffler, Walden, and Laws with fast time being set by the winner Roger Long.

Lee Hobbs converted the pole position into the early lead in UMP Modified action but Jesse Cramer and Chuck Haga made it a three wide battle for the lead on the second circuit before a spin by Larry Matillo put the race under caution.  When the action resumed Haga wasted no time getting from his third spot to the lead making a masterful move coming out of turn 4 shooting high past the machine of Cramer and diving under the machine of Hobbs down the front stretch to the claim the lead.  Once up front Haga looked untouchable as he stormed away from Hobbs and Cramer who continued to battle for second.  But as this weekend's action has proven early huge leads don't always translate into wins as 6 laps from pay dirt Haga's machine dropped the drive shaft on the frontstretch bringing out the races second caution.  This set up a 3-car battle for the win between Hobbs, Cramer, and Dan Hamstra.  Cramer tried hard to get by Hobbs over the next few laps as Hamstra looked for an advantage to bypass both to lay claim to his 6th feature win of this early season but in the end Hobbs held both at bay as he took the checkers the way he took the green, leading the pack.  Cramer was able to hold of Hamstra with Tommy Kroll and Bob Pohlman coming home 4th and 5th respectively.  Heat wins went to Hobbs, Cramer, Brian McDanial, and Haga.  Jim Farris and Arby Burton won their semi features with the fast time being set by Tony Leuck who do to mechanical problems was unable to compete in his heat and dropped out of the conci ending his night.

In other racing action Rick Hufford held back Chuck Haga to win the super street feature and Lee J Hall took up where he left off last season beating Jarred Krick to the line in the Street Stock main event.
