Four crowns find new homes for 2004
Randy Martin, Dustin Boney, Jim Wilson, and Thomas
Roberts ride home with titles at Missouri State Championship
Clint Brown
August 23, 2004
Drivers and fans alike flocked to Missouri State
Fair Speedway on Sunday to see who would come home with the Missouri State
Championship titles and they didn't go home disappointed as wheel to wheel
action was witnessed all night long.
The ground pounding American Compressed Steel/Ditzfield
Transfer WOW 360 Sprints flew around the historic 1/2 mile and once the
checkered flag flew the familiar face of Randy Martin found himself in the
winner's circle. At the drop of the green flag, outside front row starter
Brian Brown moved to the head of the pack and quickly took command of the
field as they came out of turn two. Martin followed Brown through was gave
chase to the front runner who had begun to open a lead of nearly fifteen
carlengths by the completion of lap three. Leader Brown came up on lapped
traffic early in lap four which would prove to be the end of his run at the
front. As he zipped under the flagstand to complete the fourth lap light
contact with a slower car resulted in a flat left rear tire that would cause
Brown to stop in turn four before he completed another lap. Inheriting the
lead, Martin appeared to be on a mission as he worked through lapped traffic
while holding off the challenges of the quick running Doug Wilson. The race
went green until the red flag flew on lap fourteen for Pete Crall who took his
machine for a series of flips in turn four. Crall emerged unscathed, but the
same couldn't be said for his mount as it rode back to the trailer hooked to
the wrecker. The green flag flew again and Martin cracked the whip again and
wheeled his #14 Diamond Pet Foods machine to a four car length advantage over
Wilson who was receiving heavy pressure in the form of Mike Trent. Martin
worked late race lapped traffic to his advantage and flashed under the
checkered flag with nearly an eight car length advantage over Wilson and
keeping the Missouri Championship title within the state border for another
year.. Mike Trent and Steve Gennetten finished third and fourth with Brian
Brown working back through the field after the flat tire to round out the top
five. Wilson and Brown were joined by Pete Crall in taking home the three
heat wins on the night.
Fifty-one of the midwest best W-K Chevrolet-Buick
Mighty Modifieds signed in with the hopes of taking home the title and when it
was all said and done the trophy headed to the west with DeSoto, KS resident
Dustin Boney. From the opening bell Boney made it be known the he would be a
force to reckon with as he quickly moved around polesitter Gary Blackburn Jr.
The caution flag waved on lapse two, five, six, and seven and each successive
time Boney powered away from the field riding the cushion in his Jason
Thompson owned #20. Once the early cautions had been cleared out of the way
the rest of the twenty lap affair went green with Boney running out front
setting a rapid pace while Chad Lyle set chase on the leader running in
second. Try as he might, Lyle was never able to close the sizeable lead that
Boney had opened up while holding off the challenge of track regular Dave
Meyer who had worked up from his sixth starting spot. In the end Boney proved
to be too much for the field as he raced across the line with Lyle holding on
for second. Dave Meyer, Dennis Walrath, and Gary Blackburn Jr rounded out the
top five as the twenty lap feature was completed. Howard Hall, Jon Melloway,
and Lonnie Hibner kept their hopes alive by transferring out of the three B
features on the night. Gary Blackburn Jr., Dustin Boney, Eric Hammons, Roger
Moser, Eric Turner, and Dave Meyer held on for the six heat race wins.
Limited Late Model action saw the action heat up
from the start as pole sitter held off several challenges to take home the
win. Wilson bolted into the lead, but quickly had heated pressure from Carl
Lewis who was attempting to maneuver to the front of the pack. Wilson
continued to hold the point while quick moving Kevin Coyne was working his way
up front and had found a spot in second on lap four. Several cautions plagued
the middle portion of the event which saw several cars retire to the pits
including Shawn Williams who took a nasty roll as he made contact with another
car going into turn one. Williams came out of his car ok, but his night came
to an early end. Each time that the green flag replaced the yellow Wilson was
able to hold off the run of Coyne and continue his stretch at the front of the
pack. A late race caution bunched the field once again, but as in the rest of
the event Wilson powered out front and held off Coyne at the line for the big
win. Virgil Jeffery, Dwane Vanderlicht, and Rendell Ames filled out the top
five across the line. Heat race wins went to Wilson and Carl Lewis on the
night.
The Street Stocks rolled onto the track in what
would turn out to be one of the most existing races as no less than five
drivers ran under a blanket at the front of the pack with Thomas Roberts
taking the win with a pass as the white flag waved on the field. Bobby Shane
showed the early muscle as he moved from the outside of row two to take over
the top spot before lap one was completed with Michael Grant, Marc Carter,
Thomas Roberts, and Daryl Edwards applying the pressure from behind. Shane
would hold the point until Grant made the move to the front on lap five only
to have his time out front short lived as Shane moved back past two laps
later. At the halfway mark of the event Shane still held command, but Grant
was making moves on all sides attempting to work back to the front. Behind
the leaders Thomas Roberts and track champion Marc Carter swapped the third
position where Roberts finally snagged the spot on lap twelve. Grant saw both
Carter and Roberts move past on lap thirteen, while Edwards jumped past the
two on lap fourteen just as Roberts powered past Shane and into the lead
coming off of turn four. With the white flag waving Roberts motored his
machine around for the final time holding off Shane at the line while Edwards
came home third and Grant and Carter holding on for top five finishes. Grant
and Roberts began their evening by taking home the two heat race wins on the
night.

Terry Hinck, Steve Potter, and Marc Carter come
away with Missouri State Fair Speedway Championships
Randy Martin, Dennis Walrath, and Bobby Shane take home the
wins
Clint Brown
August 6, 2004
The curtain fell on another outstanding racing
season at the Historic 1/2 Mile as the checkered flag flew on the Miller Lite
Summer Shootout Championship Race Night at Missouri's State Fair Speedway.
At the drop of the green flag in the American
Compressed Steel/Ditzfield Transfer WOW 360 Sprints it looked as though Steve
Gennetten was going to come away with victory number two of the year.
Gennetten moved from his outside row one starting spot to the head of the
field as they roared down into turn one of the twenty lap affair. When a
caution flew on lap four for the stalled mount of Matthew Fox, Gennetten had
built himself nearly a full straight away lead on second running Randy
Martin. When the race resumed Gennetten quickly built up his lead once again
as Martin wasn't able to keep the quick pace that the leader was setting.
Martin new that for a shot at the championship he needed to move to the front
of the field, but even as the leaders moved through lapped traffic he was
unable to close the gap on Gennetten. The field continued the torrid pace
until a lap fourteen caution for the stopped cars of Jon Corbin and Faron
Crank. Just as the caution flag waved leader Gennetten came upon the stalled
mounts and clipped one of them and coasted to a stop as his right rear tire
was flat due to the contact. With Gennetten on the sidelines Martin took over
the top spot and through the remainder of the event kept Columbia's Tracy
Nichols to his rear and held on for his fourth win of the 2004 Miller Lite
Summer Shootout Series. Nichols cruised home in the runner up position with
Terry Hinck, Tommy Mikels, and Bryan Grimes rounding out the top five.
Nichols, Gennetten, and Martin earned their places at the head of the a
feature by virtue of their heat wins earlier in the evening. Going into the
night Boonville's Terry Hinck was leading the points standings over Martin and
with his third place finished secured his claim on the championship.
Clinton's Dennis Walrath knew that to have a shot
at the W-K Chevrolet-Buick Mighty Modified Championship he would have to take
his machine straight to the front and that is just what he did all night
long. After a runaway victory in his heat race Walrath started on the pole of
the feature and from the outset let it be known that he was going to be the
one to beat as he quickly jumped to the front of the pack and opened up a
sizeable lead on second running Steve Cain. The gap was quickly closed up as
the yellow flag waved on lap three for the machines of Howard Hall and Curt
Potter, who had collided and come to a stop in turn 4, but Walrath jumped out
to his lead once again when the green flag waved. Cain was holding down the
second spot, but began to receive some heavy pressure from point leader Steve
Potter as the field moved into lapped traffic in the middle stages of the
race. The yellow flag waved again on lap thirteen as the disabled machine of
Eric Hammons came to a rest in turn four and this also spelled the end of the
night for Cain as he stopped on the front stretch with a motor that had gone
sour on him. While Walrath still had his spot at the point it was now Keith
Davis running second after having moved around Potter and setting his sights
on challenging for the top spot. Unable to close the gap on Walrath, Davis
had his hands full with Potter putting pressure on him at every spot on the
track for the position and he was finally able to move past as the field
completed the seventeenth lap. Walrath held on for the remaining three laps
as Potter crossed the line in second nearly a full straight away behind him.
Dave Meyer made a late race move past Davis to take over third with Sonny
Kimberling charging from his fourteenth starting spot to complete the top
five. Walrath, Meyer, and Cain copped the top honors in the heat races that
set up the feature event. With his runner up finish Boonville's Steve Potter
laid claim to his third consecutive modified championship as Walrath could
only close to within 37 points in the battle for the top spot.
The Street Stock division had the closest points
race of any of the three divisions as Marc Carter held onto the lead my a mere
thirteen points over Sedalia's Earl Sullins. Not only was Carter going for
the championship, but he was attempting to add another marker to his already
impressive five wins that he had garnered throughout the season.
Unfortunately for Carter he wouldn't be able to add that notch as early season
point leader Bobby Shane wheeled his car to the front of the field and was
never seriously challenged in the race that went nonstop from beginning to
end. Carter attempted to close the gap on Shane and challenge for the spot,
but it was just not to be as he found himself in the runner up position as the
checkered fall flew. Championship runner up Earl Sullins came across the line
second with Bob Gustin and defending champion Gary Hemme filling out the top
five positions. With his second place finish Carter locked up the title with
a scant sixteen point margin when all the markers were tallied at the end of
the night.
The 2004 Miller Lite Summer Shootout Series may be
complete, but the racing action at Missouri's State Fair Speedway isn't. Join
us on Sunday, August 22, as the Missouri State Championships are presented on
the final night of the Missouri State Fair. The American Compressed Steel/Ditzfield
Transfer WOW 360 Sprints, W-K Chevrolet-Buick Mighty Modifieds, Street Stocks,
and Limited Late Models will take to the track looking for the Missouri State
champion tag to be applied to them.

The 2004 Miller Lite Summer Shootout Series finds
itself reaching the end of a tremendous battle for the titles in all three
weekly divisions on the Historic 1/2 Mile at Missouri's State Fair Speedway.
With the running of the 2004 Miller Lite Summer Shootout Series Championships
on Friday, August 6, three champions will be crowned in the American
Compressed Steel/Ditzfield Transfer WOW 360 Sprints, W-K Chevrolet-Buick
Mighty Modifieds, and the Street Stock divisions. Who will walk away with the
crowns? Nobody can be sure as all three classes are still up for grabs. One
thing is certainly for sure - each of the champions will have truly fought for
their position and will also have their names etched in the record books along
with some of the auto racings best as a champion at the Historic 1/2 Mile.
American Compressed Steel/Ditzfield Transfer WOW
360 Sprints
Boonville, MO's Terry Hinck has yet to find his
way to the Winner's Circle, but his consistency week in and week out has put
him at the top of the charts. Through nine events Hinck has powered his Rick
Ball AutoMall 21H sprinter into the top 5 four times and the top 10 eight
times. Hinck's best finish has been three runner-ups with two of those coming
during the last two events. Although out in front of the standings Hinck will
still need to be on his game as top runners Randy Martin and Tommy Mikels sit
in second and third with only 33 points separating the top three. Martin
brings his division leading three wins into the final night and adding that
fourth win would put him in a good position to squeeze his beautiful Diamond
Pet Foods #14 past Hinck and into the points lead. Martin has worked his way
back up the points ladder after a potentially devastating opening night DNF
which has seen him complete every show since and walking away with seven top
5's and eight top 10's. Not to be outdone, Mikels could still move his way to
the front of the field as he currently resides only one marker behind Martin
in the third position. The Marshall native has kept himself in contention
much the same way as Hinck - with constancy. Mikels has yet to win a feature
event but comes into the final night on the heels of his tying his season best
finish with a fourth place run. Mikels has become a fixture at the front of
the pack and two top 5 finishes coupled with eight top 10's. The remainder of
the top 10 find themselves out of the hunt for the championship fight, but
pride is on the line and several positions could change as the season closes
out.

W-K Chevrolet-Buick Mighty Modifieds
Coming into the 2004 season two-time defending
Modified Champion Steve Potter had planned to not chase points and just run
several tracks throughout the are. Boy how plans can get changed in a hurry.
Potter brings his Sells Carpet, Tiger Towing, Potter Trucking, KT Com, Randy's
Carpet Installation Mighty Modified into the final night with a 40 point lead
on his closest pursuer with six top 5's and nine top 10's in ten races.
Walrath is riding high following consecutive wins the last two weeks and has
slightly closed the gap on Potter. Dennis has had his AJM Racing, L&M Supply,
Hickory Hollow, Ernesto's Restaurant/Ellis running right at the front with
five top 5's and six top 10's throughout the season. Lurking in the third
spot only seven points behind Walrath is fan favorite Rick Kimberling. A
midseason change of rides seemed to rejuvenate the Slater resident's run to
the front as he came out with a win in the first night in the machine.
Kimberling's four top 5's and eight top 10's have kept his title hopes alive.
Potter, Walrath, and Kimberling are the only three with a mathematical shot at
winning the title, but that doesn't mean that the race for the rest of the top
10 positions is settled. With only 162 points separating fourth thru tenth
several positions could be shuffled when the final checkered flag falls.

Street Stocks
The hottest Street Stock driver in Central
Missouri finds himself at the head of the field as Warrensburg's Marc Carter
and claimed his spot at the top. Carter rides into the final night on a
streak with three wins in a row coupled with his division leading five wins
during the 2004 Miller Lite Summer Shootout Series campaign. The ride to the
top can be attributed to the nine top 5's that Carter has accumulated in ten
events during the season. Even with his stout win total Carter is far from in
the clear as Sedalia's Earl Sullins has used consistent finishes to find
himself only thirteen points back of the division leader in the second spot.
With six top 5's and nine top 10's Sullins could sneak in and steal the crown
from Carter. Osage Beach's Bob Gustin could steal the thunder from the front
two runner's as he currently rides only 29 points behind Carter in the third
position. Eight top 5's and nine top 10's have kept Gustin within striking
distance. Even fourth place running Bobby Shane could still sneak in and wear
the crown as he sits only 51 markers behind the leader. Shane, the early
season points leader, had three early season wins to establish himself as a
force and is a threat anytime that he rolls onto the track.

Steve Gennetten revisits Winner's Circle after long
dry spell
Marc Carter and Dennis Walrath also nab wins
Clint Brown
July 23, 2004
The 2004 Miller Lite Summer Shootout kicked the
championship run into high gear as Patricia's Foods Race Night rolled into the
Historic 1/2 Mile. With only three nights of action left the title fight in
each class is still wide open for anybody to claim the 2004 title in their
class.
The American Compressed Steel/Ditzfield Transfer
WOW 360 Sprints rolled onto the speedway and for the first time in four years
Steve Gennetten found himself pulling into the winner's circle at the
conclusion of the twenty lap feature. Rocheport, MO's Mike Trent jumped to
the early lead from outside his row one starting position, but Gennetten
quickly moved into the runner-up position by the end of lap one after starting
in the fourth spot on the grid. Gennetten then set his sights on leader Trent
and powered past him and into the top spot by the time two circuits around the
Historic 1/2 Mile had been completed. Gennetten built up an eight car length
advantage as the second position became the hot sport with point leader Terry
Hinck pressuring Trent for the position and taking over the spot on the fourth
go round. The yellow flag flew on lap ten for the disabled mount of Marty
Ballenge which bunched up the field, but Gennetten powered away once the green
flag waved and held off the attempts by Hinck to take over the point. The
yellow would replace the green two more times late in the event, but each time
Gennetten was able to hold off the pack that was breathing down his neck and
cruised to the win in the Mike Trent Motorsports/Ozark Barge & Dock Service
Gaerte powered J&J. Hinck held on for the second position and the top spot in
the points with Jon Corbin, Randy Matin and Rocheport's Mike Trent filling out
the top five at the line. Trent, Hinck, and New Haven's Curtis Boyer held on
earlier in the event for the heat race wins.
Clinton's Dennis Walrath found himself at the
front of the pack for the second week in a row as he crossed the line for the
W-K Chevrolet-Buick Mighty Modified win. Walrath took the green flag from
outside row two and at the completion of the first lap found himself out front
and held on for the entire twenty lap distance. Early in the event Walrath
experienced heavy pressure from Columbia's Howard Hall who was looking to get
back on track after several weeks of tough racing luck. While Hall applied
the pressure to Walrath he was experiencing some of his own for Joe Bradshaw
who finally worked into the second spot on lap six and then set his sights on
Walrath. Nearly a half straight lead for Walrath was negated on lap fourteen
when the yellow flag flew for the #5H of Eric Hammons who made heavy contact
with the frontstretch wall ending his night prematurely. Once the race
resumed Bradshaw made an attempt to overtake Walrath, but the move didn't
stick and Walrath moved away from the pack and took the win back to Clinton
with him. Bradshaw held on for second with ninth starting and point leader
Steve Potter coming home third. Curt Potter and NASCAR Truck Series star Carl
Edwards rounding out the top five. Hall and Curt Potter held off tough fields
to take home heat race wins.
The Street Stock feature could be classified as an
event of attrition, but once the checkered flag waved a familiar face found
himself taking home the win when Warrensburg's Marc Carter crossed the line at
the front of the pack. Carter started inside row two and followed pole sitter
Bob Gustin for the first lap the jumped on his opportunity and snared the top
spot with a power move past the Osage Beach resident. Gustin would slip back
another position as always strong Bobby Shane moved to the high side and
worked into the second spot. Shane would give a good chase of Carter until
his motor began to develop problems on lap nine and he began to slip back in
the field and Gustin regaining the second spot. Earl Sullins made his charge
towards the front on lap ten as he moved past Gustin, but Carter had built up
a sizeable lead and held on for the win during the twelve lap extravaganza.
Sullins held off Gustin for second with Shane and Tim Cressley all bringing
home top five finishes. Gustin didn't go home empty handed as he held off the
pack to take the win during heat race activities.
Next Friday night marks the next to last night of
the 2004 Miller Lite Summer Shootout Series championship campaign as the
Jayhawk Racing Journal/Michael Ross Memorial Foundation Race Night presented
by American Compressed Steel kicks off. This will also be the final round of
the Progressive $ nights for the Street Stock division which will see the
winner collect a bonus if they can double up and take the wins at Missouri's
State Fair Speedway on Friday and Central Missouri Speedway on Saturday.
Adult admission is only $10.00 with Seniors $8.00, children 6-12 $6.00 and
under 6 free. Gates open at 5:00 pm with hot laps getting underway at 7:00 pm
and heat races taking to the track at 7:30 pm.

Brian Brown, Dennis Walrath and Marc
Carter have the right stuff on Pepsi Race Night
Clint Brown
July 16, 2004
The threat of rain wasn't enough to chase off a
stellar field of cars as Missouri's State Fair Speedway rolled into action
with Pepsi Race Night for round 9 of the 2004 Miller Lite Summer Shootout
Series.
Former World of Outlaws driver Brian Brown has
shown no signs of rust since returning to the weekly 360 wars and added
another notch to his win total as he took his second win in three weeks on the
Historic 1/2 Mile. Brown started outside or row one and quickly jumped into
the lead as the pack roared into turn one at the drop of the green, but
polesitter Randy Martin wasn't about to let Brown get away. Martin followed
Brown step for step until the leaders came upon lapped traffic early in lap
five that eventually ended his chances at victory. Brown momentarily slowed
behind a lapped car and shot to the bottom side and Martin and to quickly jump
on the binders to avoid the slower machine in front of him causing him to go
into a slow spin. The restart saw Brown jump out to a comfortable margin on
points leader Terry Hinck and he would never give up that advantage. Working
traffic with precision, Brown was able to extend his lead and bring home the
win for the Doogs Racing #21. Following Brown across the line were
Boonville's Terry Hinck, Steve Gennetten, Tommy Mikels, and Tracy Nichols to
complete the top five at the drop of the checkered flag. Brown and Martin
were also able to take heat race wins along with Steve Gennetten.
The W-K Chevrolet-Buick Modifieds rolled onto the
track and after having a rough middle portion of the season Clinton's Dennis
Walrath found himself in the winner's circle for the second time this season.
Walrath too over the top spot from point leader Steve Potter during the second
lap, but had to use all of his knowledge of the Historic 1/2 Mile to hold onto
the spot for the remainder of the twenty lap affair. Howard Hall began to
pressure both Walrath and Potter for the point until a lap eight caution for
the shredded right rear tire on his machine sent him pitside. Once back
underway last weeks winner Dave Meyer moved into the runner up spot and began
his quest for the front and two in a row. Not far behind Walrath and Meyer
was the streaking Shannon Franks who had worked his way into the top five
after starting ninth and was quickly closing the gap towards the front. The
final half of the feature saw Walrath holding his advantage over Meyer with
Frank finally moving into the top three on lap thirteen and pressuring Meyer
heavily. The white flag waved with Walrath, Meyer and Frank running in close
quarters and Frank making an outside move on Meyer as the trio headed into
turn three. Suddenly the mount of Meyer took a right hand turn and bounced
off of the wide open Frank slowing both of their progress momentarily. Frank
was able to squeeze back into the throttle quicker and move to the runner up
spot as Walrath raced under Bryan Ruckman's checkered flag. Behind Walrath
and Frank came Steve Potter, Rick Kimberling, and Dean Wille to round out the
top five. Walrath was successful early as well, taking his heat race win as
did Steve Potter and Eric Hammons.
The Street Stock feature was a fender to fender
duel between two old rivals Marc Carter and John Brooks with Carter coming out
on top and racing off with his fourth win of the 2004 Miller Lite Summer
Shootout Series. Carter took command from outside row one as the field roared
off into turn one and quickly had Brooks on his tail gunning for the lead.
Brooks worked the high side continually, but every run that he made was held
back by the crafty Carter. Carter made a slight slip and Brooks worked around
him to take over the position early in lap nine, but his time at the front was
short lived as Carter made a last ditch pass attempt stick as the pair worked
through turns three and four on the last lap. Carter was able to hold off
Brooks by merely feet as Dave Bentlage, Earl Sullins, and Brian Mahalovich
completed the top five in the running order. Heat race wins were earned by
Carter and Brooks earlier in the evening.
Join us next week as the 2004 Miller Lite Summer
Shootout Series rolls into the final legs of the championship fight with
Patricia's Foods Race Night. All three big classes will be in action once
again with drivers looking to either secure or increase their advantage in the
points standings. Register for a free set of tickets by stopping by any one
of the five Patricia's Foods locations (Concordia, Columbia, Marshall, Odessa,
and Jefferson City) that will be given away to one lucky fan. Adult admission
is only $10.00 with Senior Citizens $8.00, children 6-12 only $6.00 and under
6 are free. Gates open at 5:00 pm with hot laps rolling off at 7:00 and heat

Dramatic last lap pass nets Dave Meyer

Randy Martin, Bryon Allison, and Marc Carter also grab wins
Clint Brown
July 10, 2004
A great field of cars and fans were greeted with a
fast, smooth track as the 2004 Miller Lite Summer Shootout Series rolled off
Yeager's Cycle Sales Race Night at Missouri's State Fair Speedway.
The American Compressed Steel/Ditzfield Transfer
WOW 360 Sprints kicked things into high gear with California's Randy Martin
rolling his Diamond Pet Foods #14 into the Winner's Circle when the checkered
flag flew. Brian Brown, driving the Doogs Racing #21, jumped from outside row
one for the early lead and quickly built up a 10 car length lead on the field
with Brian Grimes and Randy Martin giving chase. Lap two saw the field slowed
for the stalled mount of Rusty Potter and as the green flag waved Randy Martin
worked his way around Grimes into the runner-up position as Brown once again
opened up his advantage. Lap four became the undoing for Brown as his mount
slowed with a flat left rear tire going down the backstretch. With Martin
taking over the top spot he took over where Brown left off and opend up a
sizeable advantage oover Grimes and third running Steve Gennetten. Martin was
never headed again as he blitzed through the final half of the event and raced
under the checkered flag with his second win of the 2004 Miller Lite Summer
Shootout Series. Following Martin accross the line were Steve Gennetten, Jon
Corbin, Bryan Grimes, and Tracy Nichols for top five finishes. Heat race wins
on the evening went to Bryan Grimes, Brian Brown, and Randy Martin.
Late Model competitors took to the Historic 1/2
Mile and as the green flag flew it was the duel of Marshall for the top spot
as Randy McGraw, Chad Clark, and Bryon Allison began their battle for the
front. When the dust finally settled and the checkered flag had dropped it
was the 1a John Rector Motors/AA Muffler of Bryon Allison who found his way to
the Winner's Circle. The race began with Randy McGraw pacing the field while
Chad Clark and Allison battled for the second spot in a torrid battle. McGraw
held his advantage through the first half of the race with Allison finally
wrestling the runner up spot away from Clark on the sixth go round of the
twenty lap affair. Allison was able to slightly close the gap on McGraw, but
was just unable to pull up on the veteran's rear bumper to make an attempt to
pass. Finally the door opened up on lap 14 as McGraw found himself pinned
behind a slower car on the bottom side and Allison powering past on the top.
From that point on Allison opened up a sizeable advantage and raced across the
finish line with his first win of the 2004 Miller Lite Summer Shootout
Series. McGraw and Clark came across the line in second and third with Rick
Kimberling and Larry Moon rounding out the top five. Heat race wins went to
McGraw and Clark.
The dramatic finishes that have been a part of the
W-K Chevrolet-Buick Modifieds continued as Concordia's Dave Meyer bided his
time and made a winning move through turns 1 and 2 on the last lap for the
victory. The feature got underway with Columbia's Steve Cain staking the
advantage on the field after starting on the outside of row one with polesitte
Dennis Walrath hot on his heels looking for the groove around. The top two
battle nose to tail and side by side for the point, but at every point Cain
was able to hold off the advances of Walrath. While those two waged a war at
the front Meyer was silently working his way through the fild as he found
himslef in fourth by lap four after having started from the inside of row
four. Cain still headed the field at the halfway point with Walrath still
breathing down his neck while he was attempting to retain his position from
Howard Hall who had begun to apply pressure for the second spot. Meyer began
his charge during the second half of the race by moving past Hall to take over
third on lap thirteen and with eighteen laps in the books took over the runner
up spot from Walrath. With the white flag waving Cain and Meyer charged off
into turn one with Cain dropping low and Meyer working the cushion work for
him as he caught the bite and shot into the lead. Cain made one last attempt
as the pair ran through turns 3 & 4, but Meyer was able to hold him off and
take home the victory. Following Meyer and Cain across the line were Dennis
Walrath, Howard Hall, and W-K Chevrolet-Buick Modified point leader Steve
Potter. Steve Cain and Dennis Walrath started on the front row of the feature
by virtue of their heat race wins earlier in the evening.
The Street Stocks took the the track and when the
race was completed a familiar face found his way to the Winner's Circle when
Marc Carter wheeled his bright red #10 in to garner the accolades. Carter
didn't have an easy go of it as when the green flag dropped Brian Mahalovich
quickly bolted into the lead with Carter working nearly every spot on the
track to find the way around. On several occassions it appeared that Carter
might finally have found the spot he was looking for only to see the move
unsuccessful and Mahalovich able to fend him off. Finally as the race hit the
halfway mark Carter found what he was looking for and moved around Mahalovich
and into the top spot. From there on out Carter kept his machine in front and
held off all the moves of Mahalovich for the win. Bob Gustin, Gary Hemme, and
Earl Sullins followed the front pair across the line to round out the top
five. Brian Mahalovich earned the right to start the feature event on the
pole with his heat victory earlier.
Join us again next week as we count down the final
few races of the 2004 Miller Lite Summer Shootout Series when Pepsi Racing
Night rolls onto the Historic 1/2 Mile. With only four races left the
championship fights are likely to come down to the final night to determine
the champions in each division. Adult admission is only $10.00 with Senior
Citizens $8.00, children 6-12 $6.00 and under 6 are free. Gates open at 5:00
pm, with hot laps rolling off at 7:00 pm and heat races taking to the track at
7:30 pm.

Officials of Missouri's State Fair Speedway
announced on Wednesday a change to the lineup for the remainder of the 2004
Miller Lite Summer Shootout Series. This Friday, July 9, will be the final
week that the Late Models will be in action at the track on a weekly basis.
"We really regret having to make the change, but unfortunately things just
were not working as we had hoped," stated Susan Walls when reached by phone.
"We've been working as hard a possible to attract a sponsor for the class and
we had not been able to attain one. Without a sponsor it made it very hard to
keep the class on with the 2004 Miller Lite Summer Shootout Series. We wish
all of the Late Model drivers and crews the best and we do appreciate the
support that they have given us" continued Susan.
The 2004 Miller Lite Summer Shootout Series will
continue for the remainder of the season with the American Compressed Steel/Ditzfield
Transfer WOW 360 Sprints, W-K Chevrolet-Buick Modifieds, and Street Stocks in
action on a weekly basis.

Fair Speedway contact us at the "Half Mile Hotline" at 660-826-RACE (7223) or

sprinter and made it worthwhile. Brown sprinted out to the lead at the drop
of the green from his outside row two starting position and took command of
the field by the end of the first lap. Once out front Brown was never
seriously challenged for the top spot as he was able to hold on for his second
win in as many trips to the Historic 1/2 mile. Coming home behind Brown at
the stripe were Steve Gennetten, Randy Martin, Jon Corbin, and Terry Hinck.
Tracy Nichols, Steve Gennetten, and Jon Corbin were able to fight off the
competitors to take home the three heat race victories.
The Late Model division saw a new 2004 Miller Lite
Summer Shootout Series winner as Marshall, MO's Chad Clark took home the win
over a stout field of competitors. Clark took over the top spot on lap six
after the two front running machines of Bryon Allison and Larry Clawson made
contact with a lapped car sending them both to the infield. From there on out
Clark distanced himself from the field and sprinted home to the victory.
Coming home second was twelfth starting Randy McGraw with Kevin Kaiser, Jake
Morris, and Donnie Gemes rounding out the top five. Clark also took home top
honors in heat race #1 while Bryon Allison came across the stripe with the win
in heat #2.
The Limited Late Models made their second
appearance of the season at the Historic 1/2 Mile and for the second time
Kevin Coyne traveled from Blue Springs, MO and took the win home with him.
The twelve lap affair went caution free and Coyne bolted from the pole
position and never was challenged. Jim Wilson took over the runner up spot at
the halfway mark of the event and held onto the second position at the
stripe. Following Coyne and Wilson across the line were Mike Brockert, and
the Elwell Boys of Lance and Steve to fill out the top five. Coyne was able
to make a sweep of the night as he was also victorious in the lone heat race.
Defending Street Stock Champion Gary Hemme has had
a dismal year with mechanical failures, but that all changed on Sunday night
as Hemme streaked to his first win of the season. Hemme charged from outside
row one to take the lead by the end of the first lap and was able to hold off
the hard running Brian Mahalovich for the win. Marc Carter, Bob Gustin, and
Mike Cook completed the top five finishers. The lone heat race was completed
with Brian Mahalovich taking home the win.
Join use next week as the 2004 Miller Lite Summer
Shootout Series presents Yeager's Cycle Sales Race Night on Friday, July
9. This will also be the final round of the Budweiser Progressive $ for
the W-K Chevrolet-Buick Modifieds. If a driver can double up by winning at
Missouri's State Fair Speedway on Friday and Central Missouri Speedway on
Saturday they will receive a bonus. With no driver being to accomplish that
feat thus far the bonus has stepped up to $1,500 for the driver that can
accomplish the tough double.
Adult admission is only $10.00 with Senior
Citizens $8.00, children 6-12 are $6.00 and under 6 are free. Gates open

In truly fitting fashion for a man who dedicated
so much of his life to racing both Central Missouri Speedway and Missouri's
State Fair Speedway will host action this weekend honoring the memory of Tom
Wilson.
Action at Central Missouri Speedway will be fast
and furious as the Farm & Home/T-Mobile $3,000 to win Tom Wilson Memorial
Modified Race kicks into high gear on Sunday, July 4. Some of the top
modified drivers in the country have made the call to report that they planned
on being at the track, but they will have a tough road ahead of them as the
weekly contingent competing at the track will be looking to chalk up the win
for one of the local boys. Racing will kick off with heat race action leading
into B features to give racers the chance to qualify for the 40 lap affair.
An additional chance to lock a position into the main event takes place during
Miller Lite Race Night on Saturday, July 3, with heat race winner's
automatically staking their claim into Sunday nights program. Drivers
qualifying through the Saturday program will compete in a special A Dash on
Sunday to determine their starting spot. A great evening is planned as a
special July 4th fireworks display and the Missouri Beef Council BBQ Bowl will
also be taking place during the event. Gates open on Saturday and Sunday at
5:00 with hot laps rolling out at 7:00 and heat races taking to the track at
7:30. Adult admission for Saturday is only $10.00 with Seniors $8.00,
children 6-12 $6.00 and under 6 are free. Sundays ticket prices are $12.00
for adults, $10.00 for Seniors, $8.00 for children 6-12 and under 6 are free.
Missouri's State Fair Speedway will also see it's
own high-powered ballet take to the Historic 1/2 Mile as the Putnam
Chevrolet-Pontiac Tom Wilson Memorial Race will see the American Compressed
Steel/Ditzfield Transfer WOW 360 Sprints, Late Models, Limited Late Models,
and Street Stock in competition Sunday, July 4 as part of the 2004 Miller Lite
Summer Shootout Series. The Street Stock and Limited Late Model divisions
will have extra incentive going for them as an additional $1,000 has been
added to the Street Stock purse and this will also be Round #2 of the
Progressive $ for the Limited Late Models (both based on Min 20 cars). If a
Limited Late Model driver can take the win on Saturday at Central Missouri
Speedway and duplicate that feat at Missouri's State Fair Speedway on Sunday
they will receive a $333.00 bonus from promoters Earl and Susan Walls. Fans
on hand will also get the treat of seeing a monstrous fireworks display that
is presented by American Compressed Steel. The action gets underway with the
gates opening at 5:00 and hot laps taking to the track at 7:00 followed by
heat races at 7:30. Adult admission is only $12.00 with Seniors $10.00,
children 6-12 only $8.00 and under 6 are free.

Last lap pass nets win for Rick Kimberling in W-K
Chevrolet-Buick Mighty Modifieds
Randy Martin, Dave Meyer, and Dave
Bentlage also fly to wins
Clint Brown
June 26, 2004
The second half of the 2004 Miller Lite Summer
Shootout Series kicked off in a big way as all four classes took to the track
for Williams-Woody Nissan Race Night.
The always energetic Rick Kimberling from nearby
Slater, MO had the fans going crazy after the popular chauffer took a close
win with a turn four, last lap pass in the W-K Chevrolet-Buick Mighty
Modifieds. The field took the green and pole sitter Dave Meyer jumped out to
the early lead with Knob Noster's Joe Bradshaw and Kimberling in tow. Meyer
opened up a comfortable lead as the two battled it out for the second spot and
it looked as though he was going to cruise on to the win. Kimberling dogged
Bradshaw for the runner up spot and finally made the move stick on lap seven
and set his sights on tracking down Meyer. A lap 12 caution saw the field
bunched back up, but Meyer was able to keep the top spot running low while
Kimberling was sticking to the top side of the track. Lap 18 saw the caution
fly again for the disabled mount of Steve Cain with another caution flying
before a lap was completed as Casey Creason had troubles with his machine.
This proved to be a huge break for Kimberling as he had jumped the cushion in
turn four to allow Meyer to pull away. On the restart Kimberling once again
went to the high side looking to make the move and as the white flag waved
Meyer and Kimberling roared into turn one with Meyer still holding onto the
point. As the pair raced into turn 3 Kimberling caught a bite up high and
powered into the lead as the pair came off of turn 4 and taking his first win
of the year. Meyer came home with the second spot while Joe Bradshaw, Curt
Potter, and Shannon Frank rounded out the top 5. Meyer, Bradshaw, and
Columbia's Howard Hall came home with the heat wins on the evening.
The American Compressed Steel/Ditzfield Transfer
WOW 360 Sprint feature saw a familiar face roll into the Winner's Circle as
California's Randy Martin powered his Diamond Pet Foods #14 into the lead at
the start and lead from wire to wire. Martin jumped from his outside front
row starting spot into the lead at the start and as able to beat Steve
Gennetten in the drag race down into turn one. The gap from first to second
opened up to nearly half a straight as suddenly Curtis Boyer and Tracy Nichols
began applying pressure to Gennetten for the second spot. The field began to
enter lapped traffic with Martin still holding onto his lead, but Gennetten
was able to cut slightly into that lead with Boyer, Nichols, Terry Hinck and
Jon Corbin now battling it out for position. Boyer was able to overtake
Gennetten for the runner up spot on lap 13 with Nichols moving past him the
next lap and taking over the third position. Young Jon Corbin had moved
through the field from his twelfth starting position and had just taken over
the fourth spot on lap 18 when his mount developed a problem on the front
stretch causing him to spin and bringing out the yellow flag. As the green
flag once again waved Martin was able to power to a comfortable margin and
hold off Boyer for his second win of the 2004 Miller Lite Summer Shootout
Series. Terry Hinck came home third with Gennetten and Tracy Nichols filling
out the top 5. Martin made a sweep of the evening as he also came home with a
heat win as did Steve Gennetten.
Popular Concordia Late Model pilot was able to
hold off a tough field to take a popular win with the crowd on hand. The
feature rolled of with Richard Foster powering his #43M to the outside and
taking the lead over the pole sitter Meyer as the field raced into turn one.
Larry Clawson made a move on Meyer during the second lap that allowed him to
take over the second position while Foster maintained his lead. Meyer moved
back around Clawson on lap eight and began to reel in Foster for the top
spot. The two front runners continued to set a torrid pace as Chad Clark
powered his black and white 00c into the third position no lap 12 relegating
Clawson back to fourth. The 18th lap became of the undoing of Foster's lead
as the yellow flag flew for the engine problems of Paul Neel. As the green
flag waved Foster developed suspension problems on the left rear side that
allowed Meyer to move around and take over the top spot. Once out front Meyer
never looked back as he held on for the final two laps for the win. Chad
Clad, Larry Clawson, Kevin Kaiser, and Reid Millard rounded out the top five
as they crossed the line. Three heat races were contested with Dave Meyer,
Richard Foster, and Larry Clawson holding on for those wins.
