The Book Is Closed on The '04 Summernationals

The UMP Summernationals came to a close at Oakshade Raceway in Wauseon, Ohio Saturday night with the crowning of Don O'Neal as the 2004 Champion. The 2004 Summernationals was a scheduled 26 race series in a 27 day span that took the drivers through Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, Missouri, Iowa, and Ohio on a whirlwind tour. All together 144 different drivers made the cut to participate in at least one of the 21 contested feature events (5 rainouts).

Don O'Neal of Martinsville, IN stormed through the series proving he is The Real Deal picking up his first Summernational title by winning 11 feature events and only failing to finish in the top three 3 times, 2 of which were DNFs. O'Neals 11 wins fell one short of matching the dominance of Billy Moyer's 1999 tour when he won 12 of the 22 contested events that season. O'Neal pilots CJ Rayburn Race cars powered by Jay Dickens Motors and is sponsored by A1 Salvage, Living Room Center, and Blackwell Trucking.

The runner spot went to the Moweaqua Missile, Shannon Babb from Moweaqua, IL. Babb picked up 5 feature wins along with 11 other top 5 finishes in route to his 2nd place series finish. Babb drives CJ Rayburn race cars with Jay Dickens power and is sponsored by Car City, Watters Autoland, Outlawd Motorsports, J&J Steel, Wick Racing Supply, and Sunoco Race Fuels.

Proving to be Mr Consistency during the 2004 Summernationals Terry English of Benton, KY made every feature race without the aid of a provisional in route to his 3rd place series finish and placed in the top 10 in every event, including 1 win and 12 other top 5 finishes. English drives CJ Rayburn race cars with Runion Engines as his power source. He is sponsored by Larry Seay Dealerships, AAA Fence Co., and Petroff Towing.

Dennis Erb Jr of Carpentersville, IL got off to a rough start in the '04 campaign missing two of the first 3 shows but finished strong wrapping up a 4th place finish in the series. Erb had 16 top 10 finishes including 8 top fives. Although he did not visit victory lane this year he proved himself a force to be reckoned with running strong for most of the series. Erb drives CJ Rayburn machines powered by Hedrick Precision Engines and is sponsored by Petroff Towing, B&K Sportswear and Vinyl Graphics, Peterson Aluminum Corporation, AFCO Racing Products, and Reaber Transport.

The 5th spot went to the defending UMP National Champion Rodney Melvin who started out the series just planning on being hit and miss but started out so well he followed the series all the way to stop 25 failing to show for the finale in Ohio. Melvin made 20 feature events with 14 top 10 finishes including 1 win and 9 other top 5s. Melvin drives CJ Rayburn racecars and is sponsored by Ricks Towing.

The rest of the top 10 finishers in the series standings were Randy Korte, Justin Allgaier, Steve Sheppard, Chris Carlson, and Kevin Weaver. Other drivers picking up feature wins were Brian Shirley, Billy Moyer, and Earl Pearson Jr.

Official sponsors of the 2004 UMP Summer Nationals were Hoosier Tire Midwest, Hoosier Racing Tire, Intercomp Scales, C.J. Rayburn Race Cars and Bert Transmissions.

O'NEAL bags $30,000 UMP Summer National Crown! FINAL POINTS/STATS

Don O'Neal winning almost $150,000, Shannon Babb winnning 5 Summer Nationals events, Brian Shirley a first time winner on the Summer Nationals tour, C.J. Rayburn Race Cars taking 9 of the top 10 spots in final points, all were highlights of this years cross country trek. But, the biggest news of the summer series, a highlight of the Midwest area was not a WIN, but a loss. A loss of paramount proportions! We lost the man who sat at the helm of the series for many years, and was synonomous with all that we came to expect from the Summer Nationals over the years. The brainchild known as the Summer Nationals, created at the hands of Bob Memmer will never be quite the same again, as Bob has gone on to run his own version of the UMP Summer Nationals in a better place, where there is no rain and no dust and no controversy, a full field of cars every night and a different winner at each event! R.I.P Bob and GODSPEED to you! Undisputable is the fact that the UMP series is better for having your input, the sport that we all love known as dirt late model racing is stronger due to your influence, and many drivers are better off having known you and felt your influence over their careers! To coin a phrase from the Bob Hope playbook, THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES!

Don O'Neal claimed the 2004 UMP Summer National points championship, winning 11 of the events and topping the $110,000.00 earnings barrier. He will also bank the $30,000.00 winners share of the points for his championship run! O'Neal ended the grueling grind solidly on top of the points chase with 1272 points.

Second place in the final points tally was Shannon Babb with 16 top 3 finishes, 5 wins and 1030 points. Babb amassed over $67,000.00 in winnings. Additionally he will pick up an additional $12,000.00 check at the UMP banquet for a runner up position in the Summer Nationals points.

Third place in final points was former UMP National Champion, Terry English who performed like a man of steel, earning a starting berth in every Summer National A-Main without the use of a provisional. English ended the series with 14 top 5 finishes and won over $38,000.00. English had 944 points.

Fourth place changed hands on the final night with Dennis Erb surpassing Rodney Melvin to take over the position. Erb on the heels of 15 top 10 finishes ended the series with a runner up position at Oakshade. Dennis ended the series with 727 points and will collect an additional $5,000.00 for his efforts.

Finishing in fifth was reigning UMP National champion Rodney Melvin with 723 points and 13 top 10 finishes. Rodney was one of the brightest shining stars throughout the grueling Summer National schedule, finishing well night in and night out among the best of the Midwest.

The remainder of the top 20 was filled out by Randy Korte 666, Justin Allgaier 420, Steve Sheppard, Jr. 394, Kevin Weaver 391 points, Chris Carlson 389, Greg Johnson 373 points, Billy Faust 260, Billy Moyer 255, Duke Whiseant 216, Ed Dixon 194, Brian Shirley 191, Mark Faust 182, Brian Birkhofer 178, Wes Steidinger 175 and Rohn Moon 174.

WAUSEON, Ohio -- Some of the Midwest’s top UMP Late Model drivers were on hand to compete in the finale of the 18th running of the Summer Nationals once again hosted at Oakshade Raceway. Don O’Neal already had the points championship wrapped up for this year coming into Saturday night’s events, but it was Shannon Babb who took home the big check for $10,0000 for winning the 60-lap feature event.

Last week’s feature winner, Aaron Scott, set the fast time in qualifying with a lap of 15.933, one of only two drivers with laps under 16 seconds. Scott won the dash and earned a starting position on the pole for the feature.

Dennis Erb jumped out to the early lead after starting on the outside of the front row. Scott fell back through the field, as Matt Miller, Shannon Babb, Don O’Neal and Kris Patterson would occupy the top five positions.

Patterson, who started ninth, used the low groove to work his way up to third by lap 16 and eventually took the lead on lap 21 while the leaders were working through heavy traffic.

Once Patterson took the lead, he began to pull away from the rest of the pack, until the only caution flag of the event flew on lap 31 after Rusty Schlenk spun in turn one.

Patterson led Erb, Babb, O’Neal and Donnie Moran as racing resumed after the restart. Babb quickly took second away from Erb.

Patterson went from the high groove back down to the low side of the track shortly after the restart. Babb closed in staying up high and took over the lead on lap 42. Patterson hung tough on the inside for a few laps, but then began to slip back through the running order.

Illinois’ Shannon Babb pulled away from the field in the closing laps of the race and was first to take the checkered flag. Dennis Erb was second with the Don O’Neal, last year’s winner, coming home third. Donnie Moran finished fourth and Kris Patterson held on for a top five finish.

O'Neal Locks Up The Summernational Crown With Victory at CPS

(Crown Point, IN July 15) The UMP Summernationals rolled into Crown Point Speedway on Thursday night for the 24th round of the 26 round 2004 Summernational tour. The house was packed and the fans were in for some great racing action as some of the area's finest dirt track talent was on hand to compete in the $10000 to win event.

The preliminary action began with Rodney Melvin setting a new track record in qualifying with a lap of 12.856 a tenth of a second quicker then the record set a few minutes earlier by Mike Mataragas. In the dash that was to set the first three rows of the feature line-up Billy Drake drove away to a 5 car length win over summernational powerhouse Don O'Neal with Terry English, Rodney Melvin, Matt Miller, and Shannon Babb locking down the other transfer spots. The first heat saw the best action of the night as Donnie Moran rocketed to the early lead with Frank Heckenast, Dennis Erb, and Ed Dixon circling the track three wide behind him. Erb eventually powered into second and then overtook Moran for the win. Moran took second and Heckenast edged out Dixon for third taking the final transfer spot to the feature. In the second heat Randy Korte, piloting Rodney Melvin's back-up machine, raced to the win with Bob Pohlman and Scott Martin taking the other transfer spots. In the third heat Mike Mataragas and Steve Sheppard battled back and forth most of the race for the win with Mataragas leading at the checkers. Chris Carlson took the 3rd spot. In the final heat Wes Steidinger took the point early on and held on for the win ahead of Rusty Schlenk and Guy Volk. Al Atkinson and Mike Provenzano won their respective concis taking the final two transfer spots and Kevin Weaver was awarded the provisional to set the field for the feature.

Don O'Neal shot to the early lead followed by Billy Drake, Rodney Melvin, Terry English, and Shannon Babb. Melvin and Babb took to the high side powering into second and third on the 2nd lap as O'Neal began to separate from the field. O'Neal was setting such a torrid pace that by the 5th lap he was all ready encountering the backmarkers and having to deal with traffic as Babb was working on Melvin for the second spot, eventually steering clear of him on the 10th circuit. Babb was looking for a way to catch the speedy O'Neal when Steve Sheppard slowed to a stop in turn 2 brining out the races first caution on the 13th circuit and allowing Babb to close up to O'Neal's rear bumper. But it was to no avail as O'Neal slowly began to separate from the field again on the restart and at the 1/2 way marker it was O'Neal by 5 car lengths over Babb who had a 5 car length lead on Melvin and Drake who were in a tightly contested battle for third. But O'Neal's lead was quickly erased when Wes Steidinger spun slowing the action once again. But O'Neal was not to be stopped as he once again powered away as Drake tried to put the moves on Babb while Melvin, English, Dennis Erb, and Matt Miller fought for position behind them. As the race came to a close and O'Neal raced to his 11th victory of the series, Erb worked his way into the third spot coming home behind Babb. Drake held onto 4th as Melvin, Pohlman, and English crossed the stripe in a three wide battle in that order. Steidinger, Moran, and Mataragas came home 8th, 9th and 10th. With this victory Don O'Neal wrapped up the 2004 Summernational Championship.

In UMP Modified action pole sitter Dan Hamstra was slow at the start allowing Bill Davis to fly to the early lead but Davis was not able to capitalize on this rare miscue by Hamstra as he himself made a mistake in the first turn looping his mount around negating the start. On the second go round Hamstra was right on cue taking the point followed closely by Davis, William Harrison, Nick Allen, and Mark Wireman. As the race approached the 1/2 way point Nick Allen moved to the very top of the track running right up against the wall and starting picking off spots one by one eventually catching and bypassing Hamstra on the 13th circuit. But Allen eventually crept to high on the front stretch collecting the wall bringing his brilliant run to an end a few laps from pay dirt. Hamstra once again moved to the point and held on for the win as Steve Hughes came home second followed by Davis, Brady Short, and Tony Roland. Heat wins went to Hamstra, Davis, and William Harrison with Roland winning the conci.

In other racing action Aldo Estrada visited victory lane with an impressive victory in the mini stock class. In street stock action Jay Hamilton emerged from an early 3 car battle for the lead between himself, Bill Wise, and Damon Miller with the lead only to succumb to Wise in the closing laps.

Pearson wins UMP Summer National at 34 Raceway

Earl Pearson of Jacksonville, Florida continued the torrid pace he has set over the past few months when he rolled into Johnny Johnson's 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa last night for stop #23 of the 26 scheduled events for this years edition of the UMP Summer Nationals.

Pearson driving the Lucas Oil sponsored #1 Rocket chassis was the class of the field and pocketed a $10,000.00 payday for his efforts in the 40 lap main event. Pearson caught the checkered flag ahead of Randy Korte, Brian Birkhofer, Dennis Erb, Jr., Rodney Melvin, Terry English, Shannon Babb, Don O'Neal, Matt Miller and Mark Burgtorf.

The evening began with Pearson setting the fast qualifying lap and also claiming the trophy dash ahead of Matt Miller, Terry English, Ray Guss, Jr., O'Neal and Steve Francis.

Heat races were topped by Duke Whiseant over Korte, Brent Slocum and Dennis Woodworth, Birkhofer over Erb, Jr., Darren Miller and Rob Toland, Rodney Melvin over Babb, Billy Moyer and Burgtorf.

The consi's were topped by Eckert over Denny Eckrich, Johnny Johnson, Clint Hines, and Chris Carlson and Tim Lance over Jimmy Mars, Dave Eckrich, Jay Johnson and Eric Gustaf.

O'Neal King at the 'Palace of Speed'

By: Eric Huenefeld FARLEY, IA-- It has come to the point in the 2004 edition of the UMP Summernationals where people are trying to think of reasons why Don O'Neal won't win a race. The latest belief was that O'Neal does not perform as well on the bigger tracks, such as Farley Speedway's 1/2 mile 'Palace of Speed'. Looks like the naysayers will have to look for a new crutch. The Martinsville, Indiana driver stormed to the lead from his starting position on the outside front row to lead the 40 lap main event wire-to-wire. The win was O'Neal's 10th on the 2004 Summernationals Series. The driver known as the 'Real Deal' peddled his A1 Auto Salvage/O'Neal Wood Products/Living Room Center Jay Dickens powered Rayburn Chassis around the high line Tuesday night, fighting off challenges from some of the best dirt late model drivers in the country. Among the drivers fighting for position behind O'Neal were teammates Billy Moyer and Shannon Babb. The two would trade the second spot four times in the final five laps before Moyer would slip by Babb for the runner-up spot. Rick Eckert made the trip form York, Pennsylvania and cashed in with a fourth place finish. Eckert made a late race pass on Stacker 2 Extreme Dirtcar Series point leader Jimmy Mars to secure the spot. Mars would come home in fifth spot. O'Neal's victory was worth $10,000.00 and was his second Summernationals win at the Iowa speedplant. The Summernationals next stop is tonight at Johnny Johnson's 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa. Shannon Babb takes win in Event #21 at Tri-City UMP Summer National..STORY/STATS

Shannon Babb, the Moweaqua Missile, lived up to his moniker this evening by outclassing the field and making a clean sweep by recording fast time, winning the dash and lapping up to seventh place on the lightning fast, meticulously prepared TRI-CITY Speedway.

Babb dedicated the win to UMP founder Bob Memmer who passed away this week, citing Bob's lifelong dedication to the sport and his endless contributions to help the sport.

Babb, driving the CAR CITY, WATTERS Autoland, Outlawd Motorsports, J&J Steel, Wick Racing Supply, Sunoco Fuels C.J. Rayburn Chassis with traction from Hoosier by Smash and power from Jay Dickens was definitely the class of the field this evening, pocketing the $10,000.00 winners share for his efforts.

The 34 car field took the track in qualifying with Babb touring the speed plant with a time of 20.510.

The dash was topped by Babb over Earl Pearson, Don O'Neal, Jimmy Mars, Brian Birkhofer, Terry English, Rodney Melvin, Greg Johnson and Darren Miller.

The first heat was won by Terry Phillips over Rodney Melvin, Ed Dixon, Billy Faust, John Seets, Joe Ross, Jr., Kevin Gundaker, Craig Smith, Billy Laycock and Len Garson.

Second heat action seen Greg Johnson top the field followed by Duke Whiseant, Dwight Falcon, Dennis Erb, Steve Sheppard, Jr., Chris Carlson, Chris Winters and Billy Moyer.

Third heat honors went to Randy Korte over Darren Miller, Mark Voigt, Joe Cooksey, Steve Shive, Jay Johnson, Roger Brickler and Johnny Johnson.

The consi was topped by a hard charging Billy Moyer who performed flawlessly from a rear pack starting berth to make the transfer finsihing sedcond behind John Seets from the pople starting berth. Following the duo at the stripe were Jay Johnson, Sheppard, Jr., Ross, Jr., Shive, Carlson, Craig Smith, Laycock, Roger Brickler, Winters and Len Garson.

Feature action would see Shannon Babb jump to an early lead and never be headed, leading all 40 laps like he was on a rail. Only early race action seen him with any challenge at all, that coming at the hand of Don O'Neal and Earl Pearson. Following Babb to the checkered flag were 9 cars with a high rate of attrition in the main beginning in the opening laps all the way to lap 33. At the finish it was Babb, Pearson, O'Neal, Birkhofer, Miller, Phillips and Korte, the only cars on the lead lap. Terry English and Dennis Erb were both minus one lap with Justin Allgaier rounding out the top 10 two laps down to the leader. Allgaier was in a borrowed car, after qualifying a Don O'Neal backup and then missing the heat and consi, jumping into an unfamiliar borrowed car from Kevin Gundaker who didn't make the show, and making the most of his provisional, ended the evening with a top 10 finish.

Tomorrow, the UMP Summer Nationals takes a much needed breather, with a day off for travel as the group heads North to the Farley Speedway on Tuesday for Event #22 of 26, winding down to the crowning of the champion the following Saturday. The UMP SummerNational series returned to the Tri City Speedway on Sunday night after a several years absents. There were 33 cars in attendance and some of the biggest names so far this year were running for the $10,000 prize.

During time trials, Shannon Babb set fast time with a lap of 20.570 second around the ½ mile flat track. Seven other drivers also were under the 21 second mark.

The dash set the tone for the rest of the night as Babb started on the outside of the front row and took the lead and won the nine lap event to earn the pole for the 40 lap feature. Rounding out the top five were Earl Pearson Jr., Don O’Neal, Jimmy Mars, Brian Birkhofer and Terry English to set the first three row for the feature.

Transferring from the heat to the feature from the first heat were Terry Phillips, Rodney Melvin, Ed Dixon, and Billy Faust. From the second heat, those transferring were Greg Johnson, Duke Whiseant, Dwight Falcon, and Dennis Erb. The third heat sent Randy Korte, Darren Miller, Mark Voigt, and Joe Cooksey onward.

Semi advanced John Seets and Billy Moyer to the feature. Added to the race, as provisionals were Steve Sheppard and Justin Allgaier.

When the green flag dropped for the 40-lap event, it was Babb that took the lead and he never looked back as the event went green.

The early leaders were Babb, Pearson, O’Neal, Birkhofer and Mars. O’Neal grabbed the second spot for a few laps before Pearson regained the position and stayed in second, but never a challenge for Babb’s top spot.

During the race, cars dropped out like flies after the half waypoint. Some dropped out with mechanical problems while many just wanted to save their cars knowing they could not advance their position. Mars dropped out early with engine problems while running in fifth place.

Of the 22 car-starting field, only ten were on the track at the checkered flag. Babb took the $10,000 win by a straightaway margin over Pearson, O’Neal, Birkhofer and Miller to complete the top five.

Only the top seven were on the lead lap as Babb lapped most of the other cars.

Justin Allgaier could not race his Rayburn at Tri City as he destroyed it the previous night at Kentucky Lake. He tried to use Don O’Neal’s second car, but it had problem and could not be repaired in time for time trails. He got a provisional with the help of Kevin Gundaker. Gundaker offered his unqualified car to Allgaier.

This proved to be a challenge as Allgaier is smaller and weights much less than Gundaker. The crews scrambled to add weight and get the seat to work for Allgaier. As it turned out, Allgaier stayed out and finished tenth and the last car on the track running at the checkers.

Billy Moyer was leading the second heat race when the rear end gears gave out causing him to go to the semi. It the semi, Moyer started from eighth spot to a qualifying second finish.

Moyer started 20^th but was into the top ten by lap 12. He got to eighth before he was forced to drop out.

Those not making the field include Johnny Johnson, hit the outside guard rail during his heat race, Jay Johnson, Joe Ross Jr., Chris Carlson, Kevin Gundaker, Billy Laycock, Steve Shive, Roger Brickler and Chris Winter.

TERRY ENGLISH takes KLMS Summer Nats Payday at Event #20

Terry English of Benton, Kentucky played the dance card perfectly for the hometown crowd and did not disappoint those who stayed through the rain shower delay to take in the UMP Summer National event #20 of 26.

English driving the Larry Seay Dealerships, AAA Fence Co., Petroff Towing, C.J. Rayburn Race Cars #96 took the win after Greg Johnson led the opening 28 laps of the 40 lap event.

Johnson washed high on the track in turns three and four after a restart on Lap 28 and was relegated to third place with English and Don O'Neal both gaining positions due to Johnson's miscue.

Johnson would sustain third place with Billy Moyer, Rodney Melvin, Randy Korte, Dennis Erb, John Tindal, Billy Faust, Joe Morris, Steve Sheppard, Jr., Dwight Falcon, Chris Carlson, and Joe Mike following as the checkers fell over the field.

Early action seen English record fast time touring the track with a time of 14.580.

The dash was topped by Johnson over Shannon Babb, English, Melvin, Erb, O'Neal, Korte, Randy Sellars and Morris.

Heat races were won by Korte over Jeremy Williams, Terry Phillips and Sheppard, Moyer over Duke Whiseant, Tait Davenport and Tim Brown and Faust over Morris, Falcon and Tindal.

The consi was won by Whiseant over Weaver.

24th Annual Herald and Review

The 24th annual running of the Herald and Review 100 has produced another new winner in Don O'Neal. It was more a battle of the fittest, as only eight cars were still running at the end of the 100 lapper. And only two of those eight were on the lead lap. Don O'Neal, who has dominated the Summernationals series so far in 2004 put another new track in his win column with this race. O'Neal outlasted Terry English for the win, lapping third and fourth place Eric Smith and Don Hammer. Two laps down were Jason Fegers and Victor Lee for fifth and sixth places. Randy Korte started on the pole, survived several cautions, until O'Neal slid low past him for the lead on lap 51, only to lose the lead himself to last year's winner Terry English ten laps later. O'Neal battled back, never losing sight of English, retaking the lead for good on lap 77. The two were on a blistering pace the whole race, and plut the rest of the field down a lap on laps 81-82 by getting around Smith and Hammer. Broken axles and rear ends seemed to plague most of the non-finishers.

Randy Korte had fired the first shot of the evening, coming out first for time trials, turning in fast time at 10.695 of the 35 qualifiers. Korte then took the $1,000 to win dash over Kevin Weaver, Don Hammer, Joe Ross Jr, Don O'Neal, and Steve Sheppard Jr. Heats went to Shannon Babb, who had it on cruise control, over Ed Dixon, Kyle Logue over Terry English, and Dennis Erb Jr over Mark Anderson. Victor Lee won the semi over Kerby Damery. Chris Carlson was added as the provisional.

The Don O'Neal show continues to roll on with another dominating victory by the likable Martinsville, IN driver. Wednesday night brought 58 late models to qualify with Dennis Erb Jr turning in fast time of 14.833 seconds. The nine car, nine lap dash went to Randy Korte over O'Neal, Rodney Melvin, Shannon Babb, Dennis Erb Jr and Randy Paul.

The top three from each of 4 heats advanced to the feature, with heat number one going to Ed Dixon over Jason Fegers and Billy Faust. Heat number 2 went to Mike Mullvain over Chris Carlson and Brad Denney. The third heat went to Kevin Weaver over Brian Collins and Tim Lance. The final heat was won by Terry English over Justin Allgaier and Jason Frankel. The semi features went to Duke Whiseant over Joe Harlan, and the second semi was won by Mark Anderson over Steve Lance Jr. with those four advancing.
Steve Sheppard Jr was added as the provisional. O'Neal took the lead at the start of the feature and was never seriously challenged. Shannon Babb finished secon with Dennis Erb Jr third. The promotion team of Scott May and Jay Sparks managed to push along the show enough to have the late model feature finished by 10:15....Thank You!!!

Eight and Counting as “Real Deal” Spanks ‘em at Spoon River

Banner, Ill. (July 7^th) – For the eighth time on the 2004 UMP Summernationals Tour, Martinsville, Indiana driver Don O’Neal drove his A-1 Auto Salvage / Rayburn / Monte Carlo into victory circle. O’Neal bested a field of fifty-eight UMP Super Late Models at the monstrous 3/8-mile Spoon River Speedway, leading all forty laps in the “Gift of Hope 40.”

O’Neal started along side Dash winner Randy Korte of Highland on the front row. The current UMP Summernationals points leader left the twenty-three car starting field to battle for second on back.

And a good battle it was as Korte had his hands full with the trio of Rodney Melvin, fast timer Dennis Erb, Jr., and Shannon Babb.

After a lap 13 restart for Mark Anderson’s stalled automobile, the trio of Babb, Melvin, and Erb, Jr. searched for the fastest line on the Spoon River clay. Babb found the right groove and left a three-wide battle behind him on lap 18, then setting his sights on Korte.
On the twenty-third lap, Babb had reeled in the Mid-Continental Fuels / Rocket of Korte and attempted an inside move to get by. The duo went to the inside of the lapped car of Jason Frankel, with Babb finally taking the runner up position. By that time, O’Neal was in lapped traffic with a half-dozen cars separating the two. O’Neal and Babb cruised on to the top two positions, Erb, Jr. make a last lap desperation effort to pass Korte and got the job done at the stripe. Tenth starter Terry English rounded out the top five, while Kevin Weaver, Melvin, Ed Dixon, Mike Mullvain, and Justin Allgaier rounded out the top ten. Erb, Jr.’s fast lap was 14.833 seconds for an average speed of 91.013 miles per hour. The Heat Races were topped by Dixon, Mullvain, Weaver, and English. Duke Whiseant and Mark Anderson made the starting field via Consolation Race wins.

The Don O'Neal victory tour continued to roll on with another victory Sunday night at Vermilion County Speedway. Rodney Melvin led the first 15 laps, giving way to Shannon Babb, then Babb got passed by O'Neal for the lead on lap 26. Babb and O'Neal worked their way through traffic, as only 6 of the 15 finishers were still on the lead lap. Babb never gave up the chase, and numerous times would pull alongside O'Neal, but just could not get past him.

The time trials had O'Neal within a tenth of a second of the track record for fast time of the 37 qualifiers. The dash went to Rodney Melvin with Terry English, Scott James, Shannon Babb, Roger Long, O'Neal, Randy Korte, Eric Smith and Steve Sheppard Jr rounding out the field. Heats went to Richie the Hitman Hedrick over Randy Korte, Dennis Erb Jr over Kyle Logue, and Kevin Weaver over Jr Shickel. Semis went to Eric Smith over Don Hammer, and to Jamie Zidar over Jammie Wilson with only the winners advancing. Justin Allgaier was added as a provisional, and the field was set.

Don O'Neal of Martinsville, Indiana rolled out a brand new car for tonight's 40 lap main event at Paducah International Raceway and picked up right where he left off with the old car... going to victory lane and picking up a $10,000 winners check to go with his 6th UMP Summer Nationals A-Main win. Amazingly, O'Neal has amassed a 50% winners record in the mini-tour thus far and has earned over $56,000.00.

O'Neal is sponsored by O'Neal Wood Products, The Living Room Center, ALLSTAR Automotive, A-1 Salvage and drives a C.J. Rayburn chassis with horsepower from JAY DICKENS and traction from HOOSIER by Smash.

Terry English looked strong in the opening laps and appeared he may be able to stop the rampage that has been displayed by O'Neal over the tour. But O'Neal would overtake English on the 20th lap off of turn 4, only to see English slide back past entering turn 1. O'Neal would slide English a volley off of two to get back to the point and was never headed again after that.

Following the duo at the stripe was Shannon Babb with yet another top 3 finish. Babb has not finished worse than third in an A-Main event yet during the series when he has been running at the end.

Rounding out the top 10 were Scott James, Billy Moyer, Darren Miller, Tait Davenport, Rodney Melvin, Chris Carlson and Kevin Weaver.

O'Neal again at MT. VERNON for Win #5 of Summer Nationals

Don O'Neal of Martinsville, Indiana once again visited a familiar piece of real estate, a routine performance during this years running of the UMP Summer Nationals.
O'Neal took win #5 in the 2004 running of the UMP Summer Nationals as he crossed the line ahead oif Shannon Babb, Rasndy Korte, Terry English, Dennis Erb, Chris Carlson, Rodney Melvin, Mark Faust, Billy Faust and Kevin Weaver rounding out the top 10.
Korte who started on the pole, lead the opening laps, being passed by O'Neal on the top side on lap 27. Babb had also been making the top side his preferred line working from the 6th starting spot to the runner up position on lap 29 by virtue of passing Terry English and Korte.
English earlier in the night got the activities underway by recording the fastest lap in qualifying with a time of 13.330 to best the other 33 cars in attendance.
The dash was topped by Korte over Rodney Melvin, Billy Faust, English, O'Neal, Babb, Ed Dixon, Mark faust and Bobby Melvin.
The first heat was won by Matt Taylor over Dixon, Dennis Erb, Justin Allgaier, Brian Collins and Rohn Moon.
Second heat honors went to Mark Faust over Ron Sensel, Kyle Monroe, Jeremy Sneed, Eric Smith and Joe Cooksey.
The third heat was won by Bobby Melvin over Chris Carlson, Steve Sheppard, Jr., Tait Davenport, Roger Brickler and Chad Smith.
The fourth and final heat was aced by Frankie Martin over Brent Kreke, Jeff Sloan, Mike Hammerle, Tony Boyles, Scott Ferguson and Kevin Weaver.

6/30/04, Clarksville, TN – Stop number 10 on the UMP Summer Nationals tour was at Clarksville Speedway Wednesday night. A field of 32 late models from five states was on hand for the $6,000 to win event. Gary Frost set fast time with a lap of 12.984. Randle Sweeney qualified second with a 13.083. Richard Frost was third with a time of 13.133. The fastest non-Clarksville regular was Justin Allgaier with a 13.161 in fourth. Rounding out the fastest six were Dennis Erb, Jr. with a lap of 13.194 and Tony Morris with a 13.203. Carnell Parker, Jr. was the first out to qualify. He was making a fast lap when too much side bite lead to him flipping his car between turns three and four. He was done for the night.

The Moweaqua Missile Shannon Babb visited victory lane on Tuesday night in the 40 lap A-Main event at the Clay County SPeedway in Flora, Illinois. The event was the 9th scheduled event of the 26 night tour that marks the 2004 edition of the UMP Summer Nationals.

Babb claimed the $6,000.00 payday driving a C.J. Rayburn chassis with power supplied by Pro Power Engines. He is sponsored by CAR CITY, Watters Autoland, Platinum Motors, Arkansas Motors, Weld Wheels, J&J Steel, Red Line Oil, Out-Pace Products, Oval Craft and Hoosier Racing Tire with Hoosier's by Smash.

At the drop of the green over the field for the 40 lap A-Main, Don O'Neal who has dominated this years edition of the summer nationals, appeared to be strong and jumped to an early lead from his outside front row starting berth. O'Neal would lead the first 11 laps with Babb passing for the lead as the duo exited turn four. Babb would never be headed the remainder of the race despite several near mishaps when the leaders encountered lapped traffic.

On lap 22 as Babb was attempting to pass Kyle Monroe on the bottom, on a track that was taking rubber, Babb got sideways and nearly spun, but had a big enough lead to overcome any challenges from O'Neal.

Following Babb at the stripe were O'Neal, Melvin, Johnson, Billy Faust, Korte, Erb, English, Weaver and Martin to complete the top 10.

Babb bested the 27 car field in qualifying, recording a time of 16.299.

The dash was won by Billy Faust over Don O'Neal, Babb, Rodney Melvin, Randy Korte, frankie Martin, Chris Carlson, Joe Morris and Terry English.

The heat races seen Greg Johnson capture heat #1 over Dennis Erb, Kyle Monroe, Ron Sensel, Carlson, Michael Bradley and Rohn Moon. The second heat was won by Joe Morris over Mark Faust, Mark Oller, Dan Sturgeon, Justin Allgaier, Steve Sheppard, Jr. and Jammie Wilson.

The third and final heat was topped by English over Pete Parker, Kevin Weaver, Roger Long, Jeremy Sneed, Mark Voigt and Justin Sneed.

MELVIN takes win in Event #7 - Haubstadt Stats/Results

Rodney Melvin drove the Rick's Towing, CJ Rayburn chassied #27 to victory Sunday evening at the Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Indiana in stop #7 on the 2004 UMP Summer Nationals tour across the midwest! The victory was worth $6,000.00 to the former UMP National Champion.

The evening started with Don O'Neal, current series point leader and winner of three of the previous 5 events recording the fastest lap in qualifying with a time of 13.751.

O'Neal went on to claim the dash ahead of Steve Karnes, Terry English, Shannon Babb, Frankie Martin and Melvin.

The heat races were won by Mark Faust over Dennis Erb, Billy Faust and Mark Gansmann, Chad Zobrist over Justin Allgaier, Clay Baumann and Chris Carlson and Scott James over Randy Korte, Kevin Weaver and Rohn Moon.

The consis were won by Steve Sheppard, Jr. over Ron Sensel, Jammie Wilson and Steve Ashby and Pete Parker over Tait Davenport, Greg Johnson and Ed Dixon.

The 2004 UMP Summer Nationals will move to Lawrenceburg, Indiana tonight for stop #8 of the 26 night tour, a 40 lap A-main event paying $6,000.00 to the winner. O'Neal Slides By Long to Claim 3rd Consecutive Summernational Win

(June 26th Fairbury, IL) The UMP Summernational tour rolled into Fairbury, IL Saturday night for round 6 of the series at The American Legion Speedway. This nights action had 44 Late Models on hand to compete in the activities that would culminate with a 50 lap $10,000 to win main event.

The preliminaries began with Terry English setting fast time with a lap of 13.476 followed closely by Roger Long and Mark Anderson. The nine lap dash to set the first six positions of the feature saw The Silver Shark, Scott James devour the field as he raced away to an easy win followed by Roger Long, Mark Anderson, Randy Korte, Don O'Neal, and Terry English. The first heat race saw Junior Shickel take the early lead but Richie Hedrick pulled by on the second lap and held off Shickel for the duration with John Gill taking the final transfer position. Heat 2 saw Duke Whiseant take the early lead but he spun coming out of 4 on the second lap collecting half the field including Kevin Weaver who received extensive damage and was done for the evening. Shannon Babb then cruised away to the heat victory followed by Wes Steidinger and Brian Shirley. Heat 3 went to Mike Mullvain with Dennis Erb coming from the back to take second and Don Hammer taking the third and final transfer position. In the 4th heat pole sitter Greg Johnson broke a tie rod at the start of the race leaving Kyle Logue with the lead and the win with Jay Sparks and Justin Allgaier taking the other transfer spots. Mike Miller won the first conci and Greg Johnson won the second coming from the rear with a magnificent 3rd to first move on the last lap. Rodney Melvin was awarded the lone provisional to set the 21 car field.

With fireworks firing off outside the track between turns 1 and 2 the field took the green flag only to see Scott James spin in the first set of turns negated the start. On the subsequent restart Roger Long stormed to the lead followed by Randy Korte, James, and a four car battle for fourth between Terry English, Mark Anderson, Shannon Babb, and Don O'Neal. With 5 laps in the books it was a three car pull away as Long, Korte, and English were pulling away from the field as O'Neal, Babb, and James were engaged in a fierce struggle behind them. Kyle Logue stalled on the track one lap later bringing out the caution and slowing the field. On the restart, Long settled into the lead as O'Neal began to work on English for the third spot making the pass on the 8th circuit. The field began to settle in by the half way point with Long having a 5 car length lead over Korte who had about the same distance between himself and O'Neal and Babb who were in close contact for the third spot. Korte began slipping backwards with about 15 to go allowing O'Neal and Babb to close and pass him on the 37th circuit as Roger Long stretched his lead to a 1/2 a straight away. But as Long was negotiating traffic it appeared as if his tires began to give up as he got bogged down as he tried to get past Justin Allgaier allowing O'Neal to erase the lead and close in for the kill. With two laps to go O'Neal made his move with a superb slide job coming out of two taking the lead and never looked back racing home to his second $10,000 payday in as many days and his 3rd consecutive Summernational win. Long, Babb, Dennis Erb who was coming hard at the end of the race, Korte, and English rounded out the top 6. After this there was a bit of controversy for the 7th spot. Richie Hedrick and Greg Johnson had been racing hard for the position for several laps and as they came out of 4 to take the white flag Johnson got into Hedrick and took him around. Hedrick, who was obviously upset with this, exited his car onto the track as the field was taking the checkers to show his displeasure with Johnson by tossing his helmet at him as he came by. After considerable discussion, UMP officials decided to award Hedrick with the 7th place he was running at the time of the contact but fine him the monetary difference between the 7th and 13th positions for his on track display of anger. Johnson was moved back to the 8th spot and Scott James and Jay Sparks rounded out the top 10.

In UMP Modified action Jay Ledford converted his pole position into the lead and held back a determined Joel Funk who was piloting the machine normally driven Rick Thomas through much of the early stages of the race. However as the leaders approached traffic Aaron Ricketts, Matt Bachman, and Lance Dehm closed in to make it a five car battle for the win. Ledford was able to hold the pack back for the win as things got a little dicey behind him with Bachman, Dehm, Ricketts, and Funk coming home 2nd through 5th. Heat wins went to McKay Wenger, Bachman, and Dehm with Jeff Curl winning the last chance race.

In Sportsman action BJ Richardson held off a strong Jeb Weaver to take his second straight feature win.
