Marty Thompson Wins Fifth IV Cellular Street Stock Event

 at Bureau County Speedway

Marty Thompson has won all five nights of the six night Illinois Valley Cellular Street Stock series. He picked up his fifth feature win at Bureau County Speedway Friday, September 15th. The sixth and final night of the series will be run at LaSalle Speedway on Saturday, Sept. 16th.

Their twenty five lap feature turned into more of an enduro as the twenty cars ran for over 45 minutes. While the track was tacky and extremely fast drive shaft problems plagued several of the cars. Multiple spins and a temper tantrum by one driver extended the race’s length.

Thompson led every lap with his closest competition coming from Todd Balensiefen and Justin Rutledge. Rutledge took over second place from Balensiefen with ten laps in the books. Scott Schoener had been running in fourth but slowed for one lap with three to go allowing Randy Lucas to pick up the fourth place finish. Keith Lucas and Matt Ramer rounded out the top six. Earlier Balensiefen, Schoener and Randy Lucas picked up heat race wins.

Thompson also won a Modified heat race and started on the pole in the Modified feature but dropped out with motor problems after six laps. Ray Bollinger quickly picked up the lead with Kevin Thompson close behind in second. . Donovan Lodge of Andover powered by Bollinger with ten laps to go to take the Tower Equipment Modified feature win. Bollinger slowed with one lap to go and Billy Tuckwell blew by him to take the second place finish. Bollinger finished third with Jimmy & Kevin Thompson in fourth and fifth.

Rob Hammitt, dual Hornet point champion, picked up the Union Bank feature trophy. Tony Provenzano, Jr and Hammitt. ran door to door for the first six laps with Provenzano holding the lead. On lap 7, Provenzano and Jeff Seitz spun but no caution was thrown. Hammitt took over the lead and Kyle Fisher moved into second place. Provenzano would drop out with a tire rubbing causing smoke to fill the track. Trent Peterson placed third and Kevin Elgin fourth.

The Prime Quarter Single Hornet feature was won by Roy Alm. Jimmy Johnson picked up their heat race win earlier in the program and finished second in their feature. JR Brown finished third ahead of Mark Sutton and Jason Ramos.

The last race of the 2006 season will be Sunday, Sept 24th with the annual Piehl Chevrolet Fall Bash. Extra payout has been added to all of the classes with the Late Model and Modified divisions paying $1500 to the winners. The Street Stock winner will take home $350. The Tylor Fisher Memorial Hornet race will be run with $450 going to the top driver.  Gates will open at 3 p.m. with racing at 5 p.m.

Two special races have been added to the program with local dignitaries including the Mayor of Princeton, Radio Station disk jockeys and other celebrities racing Street Stocks and Hornets.

Bureau County Speedway - Over two and a half inches of rain fell on the track at Bureau County Speedway Thursday and it left the inside a little swampy. But the racing surface was extremely fast, even kicking up a little dust.

Mr. Smooth, Josh Vinnedge, picked up his fifth Modified feature win of the season. Once again, he ran consistent laps, hitting his marks and pulling away from the field in the process.

Joe Adam ran in second until a flat tire sent him to the pits for a change with seven to go. Mike Garland picked up the third place spot only to bring out the caution himself a couple of laps later when he clipped the grandstand wall.

Marty Thompson was running second behind Vinnedge but couldn’t get anywhere near him to try to make a pass. Kevin Thompson battled with Brian Carrington for several laps to take over third place. His brother Jimmy passed Carrington on the last lap for a fourth place finish. Vinnedge took the win followed by the Thompson trio, Marty, Kevin and Jimmy. Brian Carrington placed fifth ahead of Casey Lappin. Joe Adam came back through the field to finish seventh.

Jeff “Bone” Larson put on another driving show as he led all 25 laps of the Kramer Garage Door Late Model feature. Larson just walked away from the field, even when the race was realigned for a caution. Jerry Pitts picked up a heat win and ran second for most of the feature. Travis Rokey was the car that was on the move. Rokey was flying on the high side of the track.  He was able to get by Pitts with one lap to go to finish second after starting in tenth place. Richie Bell finished fourth ahead of Matt Moon.

Larson’s win was his eighth of the season.

The Street Stock class is always very competitive and Friday was no exception. Jamie Balensiefen and Richie Bell, who was driving the 911 car, led the first lap. Balensiefen pulled ahead with Nathan Balensiefen right on him. After five laps Randy Lucas would pass Bell to take over third place. The caution came out when Angie Carrington tapped Marty Gradert and he spun on the front stretch. On the restart the leaders bunched up and Nathan Balensiefen was pushed into the turn three tires which broke his front end suspension and ended his night.

When the race resumed, Jamie Balensiefen retained the lead with Bell right behind him. Bell would bring out the caution with one lap to go. When the race went green, Randy Lucas jumped to the top of the track to try to make a pass right at the cone. Eric Whittington was also on the move and he tried the inside. Balensiefen went to the top to put a block move on Lucas causing him to slow up and Whittington to charge into second place just at the checkered flag. This was Balensiefen’s first win of the year. He and Lucas had gone into the racing program tied for second place in the overall point standings. Justin Rutledge had wrecked in the heat race but it didn’t stand in his way in the feature as he moved up from a 14th starting position to finish fourth.

Jeff Seitz won his seventh Dual Hornet feature Friday night. He passed the leader, Rob Hammitt after only three laps and was never challenged again for the lead.  Kyle Fisher passed Hammitt to take over second with seven laps to go. Dave Roggy finished fourth. Trent Peterson had been running in sixth when he spun out Tim Provenzano on the last lap. Provenzano was awarded a fifth place finish while Peterson was put to the rear of the field.

Roy Alm is tied with Jeff Larson for the highest number of feature wins with 8 each after Friday night’s program. Jarrod Galli passed Alm on the second lap of the Single Hornet feature and led six laps. Then his car broke and he slid into the turn four wall. This gave Alm the lead and he was only challenged one time by the second place car of Jimmy Johnson. Alm took the win followed by Johnson, Whittington and JR Brown.

The racing program was completed well before 10 p.m. Next Friday will be the Late Model Season championship race with double points awarded to that division. The other classes will have their Season Championship races on Friday, Sept. 1st following the break for the Bureau County Fair. Going into this week’s program Richie Bell currently holds the point lead with a 40 point lead over Jason Jaggers. Bryan Moon only 16 points behind in third and Jeff Larson is 28 points behind Moon in fourth.

Larson & Alm Each Win 7th Feature of the Year

Jeff “Bone” Larson picked up his seventh feature win of the season at Bureau County Speedway Friday, August 4th. Larson started on the pole and was never really challenged. The track was smooth and fast and  Larson was able to really pick up some momentum as he ran a higher line around the track. He had lapped several cars by the time their first caution came out on lap 14 for debris on the track. The lapped cars were put to the back of the pack and this put Mike Mataragas, who had earlier won the Bureau County Republican Hard Charger Award, right behind Larson in second.

Larson again pulled away from the field and on to the checkers leaving Mataragas in second and Richie Bell in third. Bryan Moon moved up from seventh to finish fourth ahead of Jason Jaggers.

Jimmy Johnson picked up his first Single Hornet heat race win of the season and started out leading their feature event. They ran two laps and Scott Shepard spun on the backstretch bringing out the caution. Roy Alm grabbed the lead from Johnson when the race restarted. Johnson would run in second until the last lap when Jarrod Galli made a last charge and took over second place. Alm picked up the feature trophy which was sponsored by the Princeton Metro Center & Princeton Park District for the seventh time this season. The last feature of the night was completed by 10:15 p.m.

Adam Odell also picked up his first win of the year in the Dual Hornet feature but was disqualified when he refused to allow his car to be claimed after the race was over. This gave Tony Provenzano, Jr. his first feature win of the season. Rob Hammitt had run fourteen laps in second place but Provenzano had been running door to door with him for the last three laps. With two laps to go Provenzano took over second as the cars rubbed together going down the front stretch. Kyle Fisher made his move on the last lap and was able to get by Hammitt. This left Provenzano with the win, Fisher second, Hammitt third and Kevin Elgin fourth.

The track was very wide and smooth and the Street Stocks took advantage of that to run three wide several times during their 15 lap feature Justin Rutledge took the lead at the green. Behind him the battle was on between Keith and Randy Lucas, Jamie Balensiefen and Nathan Balensiefen. Nathan elected to start in the rear of the field and by the half way point was challenging Jamie Balensiefen for second place when the caution came out for Jarrod Galli hitting the wall in turn two. Galli had just purchased the 911 car and was running in the Street Stock division for the first time as well as in the single Hornet class.

When the race restarted Jamie Balensiefen dove under Rutledge just past the starting cone with Nathan right behind him. Nathan Balensiefen quickly moved into the lead and held that position for the remaining six laps to take his sixth win of the year. Rutledge passed Jamie Balensiefen and finished second. Randy Lucas finished fourth and Eric Whittington fifth.

Sixteen Modifieds started their feature and they had their share of caution flags again. It was a Thompson show with Marty and his son Jimmy battling for position throughout the race. Jimmy would take the lead on the back stretch only to have Marty take it back coming out of turn four. Younger brother Kevin was right behind them in third place. Jimmy had taken the  lead with four laps to go but then Marty passed him again right at the start finish line. The caution came out when Joe Adam spun with one to go. Jimmy tried to make another pass on the last lap but his dad was able to stay in the lead and take his sixth feature win. Josh Vinnedge broke up the trifecta when he passed Kevin Thompson to finish third.

The membership of Bureau County Speedway is encouraged to attend a meeting to discuss the current financial situation of the Speedway on Tuesday, August 8th at 7 p.m. at the Underground Inn in Princeton.

The track crew had spent many hours making the track surface at Bureau County Speedway perfect for the drivers after the problems two weeks ago. Consequently the track was smooth and fast with no dust in spite of the hot weather.

Jarrod Galli picked up the double points/double payout Single Hornet feature win. He held off Roy Alm for all twenty laps to take the victory. Shane Whittington finished third. Justin Hamm finished fourth but didn’t go to the claiming area after the race, causing him to be disqualified. This left Mark Sutton with a fourth place finish.

The Dual Hornet feature was green start to finish with Jeff Seitz taking the win. Rob Hammitt finished second and Kyle Fisher third. Princeton’s Dr Kurt Crowe took the wheel of the #2 “rental car” and drove a respectable race for his first time behind the wheel.

The Late Model feature ran caution free for all 25 laps. Jason Jaggers picked up a heat race win and started on the pole next to Travis Rokey. Jaggers grabbed the lead on the green and led the first half of the race with Jeff Larson scrambling to catch him. Jaggers was eventually done in when some lapped cars slowed his progress enough that Larson could make it to the front. Larson and Jaggers would pick their way through the field for the last half of the race. They managed to lap all but the cars running in third through fifth as they headed for the checkers. Rokey was passed by Mike Mataragas with three laps to go. Mataragas would finish third, Rokey fourth and Bryan Moon fifth.

Nathan Balensiefen and Leon Cade swapped the lead back and forth during the opening laps of the Street Stock feature. Balensiefen would eventually work away from the pack only to have the caution flag come out and bunch the pack again. Balensiefen was able to hold off Cade to take the win. Jamie Balensiefen held off several attempts by Randy Lucas to finish fourth. Eric Whittington took fourth place from Randy Lucas.

The Modified’s had a wild race, with the yellow/checkered flag being thrown with six laps to go. They had six yellow flags and had gone up to their time limit so the checkered was thrown. Marty Thompson had the race win sewn up long before that. Josh Vinnedge finished second and Ray Bollinger third. Kevin Thompson held off Casey Lappin for a fourth place finish.

Thompson wins Big again at Bureau County Speedway

Marty Thompson of Mineral picked up the win in the Schertz Countryside Sales Modified feature by leading every lap. Mike Garland finished second, Brian Carrington third, Kevin Thompson fourth and Ray Bollinger fifth. He also won his heat race in the Modified division and in the Street Stock class.

Friday was night number three of the Illinois Valley Cellular Street Stock Series. Marty Thompson was on top of the point standings after winning the first two nights of the series. Friday night at Bureau County Speedway he picked up his third Series feature win in a row.

Thompson started on the pole with Jamie Balensiefen starting on the outside of the front row. Balensiefen would bring out the first caution as he spun in turn one on the first lap. A complete restart gave him his spot back. Balensiefen took the lead and would hold that position for five more laps. Thompson used the high side on the back stretch to take over the front row from Balensiefen.

Soon Leon Cade was running along side Thompson on the bottom in second. The problem was two holes that developed in the track at each end. When Cade would try to make his move on the inside, the rut would get him out of shape, which allowed Thompson to stay in the lead. With six laps to go Cade spun in turn four. This left Balensiefen running in second but Thompson pulled away before he could really challenge for the win. Thompson finished first, Balensiefen second. Jeff Hamilton of Pontiac started 8th and took a third place finish. Eric Whittington and Gary Schmitt placed fourth and fifth.

Richie Bell of Sheffield picked up his third feature win of the season in the Schertz Countryside Sales Late Model feature. Bell had the field covered from the green flag. Bob Freeburg had his best night of the season going as he ran in second behind Bell. With eight laps to go, Henry Sievers, Jr.  spun on the back stretch and Freeburg scraped the outside wall trying to avoid him. He was able to continue with only some damaged body parts.

Scott Schmitt took over second place from Freeburg on the restart. They only ran one lap when Mike Provenzano hit the wall in turn two. Freeburg pulled back by Schmitt to take over second place but now they had to contend with Bryan Moon. Moon made his charge and moved from fourth to take over second place with two laps to go.

Bell took the win with Moon second, Schmitt third and Freeburg fourth.

When the Dual Hornet cars took to the track the rut in turn three was causing the cars to bounce wildly across the track. The track grader was broken, leaving no way to fix the hole. Track officials decided to throw a yellow/checkered flag after six laps when it was deemed too unsafe to continue. Jeff Seitz was named the winner. The Single Hornet drivers will have two feature races next Friday, July 21st.

Birkhofer picks up $10,000 UMP Summer National Win

Muscatine, Iowa’s Brian Birkhofer had everything going his way at Bureau County Speedway Friday night. This was the first time a UMP Summer National race had been run at the 3/8 mile D shaped oval. Birkhofer set fast time with a 14.3 qualifying lap and he followed that up with a win in his heat race. The only race he didn’t win was the four lap dash to set the first four positions in the feature. Jimmy Mars of Menomonie, WI picked up that win  with Birkhofer finishing second. Darren “the Thriller” Miller, the winner of last Sunday’s WDRL Special at Bureau County Speedway bobbled in turn three which allowed Brady Smith his chance to take a third place finish.

Birkhofer snapped up the lead as their 40 lap feature went green and led every lap on his way to the checkered flags. Mars was working to hold off Shannon Babb and Miller. Miller quickly took over second place with Babb right with him in third. With 12 laps to go Babb was finally able to get by Miller only to have a caution come out and move him back into third place. As soon as the race restarted Babb was again able to pass Miller and would hold him off to take a second place finish.

Birkhofer, who had won last year’s inauguaral WDRL special at Bureau County Speedway, took the win and the $10,000 paycheck. Miller finished third with Dennis Erb in fourth and Jimmy Mars in fifth.

Earlier in the program Brian Shirley caught the grandstand wall and rolled his car, landing on the roof. He was able to climb out unhurt while the car was still sitting on it’s roof. The track was graded after that incident which made the cars faster than before. Darren Miller won the first heat race and Jimmy Mars won the second. Brady Smith won the fourth heat after smacking the wall in hot laps and breaking the right front.

Ray Bollinger picked up his first Modified feature win of the year taking home $700 for running 7 laps. The Modifieds were not having a good night and were having caution after caution. The race was yellow checkered with Bollinger barely holding off Marty Thompson to take the win. Mike Garland finished third and Kevin Thompson fourth.

Nathan Balensiefen won the Street Stock feature with Marty Gradert, Randy Lucas and Nathan Ultch rounding out the top four.

Darren “Thriller” Miller Takes Firecracker 50 Win at Bureau County Speedway

Local race fans have been waiting to see Darren Miller return to Bureau County Speedway for many years. Miller started out his career running at the Princeton track. He didn’t disappoint the fans as he showed during the fast paced 50 lap feature that he hadn’t forgotten his way around the D shaped oval.

Brian Harris of Davenport, IA picked up the win in the 6 lap dash to start on the pole and Miller placed second to start on the outside of the front row. Brady Smith of Solon Springs, WI and Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine started side by side in the second row. Birkhofer won last year’s inaugural race at Bureau County Speedway and was going to try to make it two in a row. Track regular, Jeff Larson started the feature next to Scotte Lemke, another driver who had run a Modified at Princeton for a few years. Chris Simpson of Marion, IA., and Tony Izzo of Oglesby rounded out the top 6 starters.

As the 50 lap feature took the green flag Miller took the lead while Harris fell in behind him in second.

The first caution came out with only four laps in the books. When the race went green, Birkhofer dove to the inside to take over second place from Harris. Larson passed Brady Smith for fourth. Birkhofer was able to take the lead from Miller after 8 laps, but he was only able to hold off Miller for four laps. Miller took the lead again and the rest of the race was all his.

Birky would make a couple more attempts to pass using the high side but to no avail. The caution came out for the last time with only three laps to go when Brian Harris spun while running in third place.

Miller crossed the line first and picked up a check for $5000 for his work. Birkhofer finished second. Jeff Larson had a good run finishing in third place. Smith placed fourth ahead of Ray Guss, Chris Simpson and Kyle Berck.  Miller said in a post race interview that he was planning on returning to Bureau County Speedway this Friday, July 7th for the UMP Summer National tour which will pay $10,000 to the winner of the late model feature.

Earlier in the program, local racer Travis Rokey and Bret Sievert of Mukawonago, WI were involved in a scary looking crash and roll over in the first late model heat race. Sievert’s car was badly damaged in the roll over and had to be removed from the track on a roll back. Neither driver was injured. Jimmy Mars of Elk Mound, MN and Billy Tuckwell of Peoria both broke early and weren’t able to compete.

Jeff Larson ran more laps Sunday than any other driver. He started out the hot summer night’s program by running in both the 25 lap Modified feature and in the 50 lap Late Model feature. Larson led every lap to take the win in the Modified feature. Mike Garland stuck right with him to finish in second place. Josh Vinnedge battled with Garland and finished third. Brian Carrington had one of his best runs of the season finishing in fourth ahead of Dale Leuth. Vinnedge and Larson also won the Modified heat races.

Jamie Balensiefen picked up his first feature win of the year in the Street Stock feature. Balensiefen led every lap. Cody Sommer drove the 911 car for the first time this season and passed Nathan Balensiefen to run second for the second half of their feature event. Nathan picked off Sommer at the line to take a second place finish. Randy Lucas finished fourth and Justin Rutledge fifth. Earlier Larry Yardley picked up his second heat race win of the weekend.

Racing resumes at Bureau County Speedway on Friday, July 7th with the UMP Summer National's late model series. Gates will open at 5 p.m. and fans are reminded to come early because seating will be at a premium.

Rob Hammitt Picks up 1st Feature Win

Bureau County Speedway – Princeton, IL

Princeton’s Rob Hammitt picked up his first feature win at Bureau County Speedway Friday night. He started on the pole of the Heartland Autobody Dual Hornet feature and led every lap on his way to his first win. Kevin Elgin finished second and Kyle Fisher in third.

Jarrod Galli picked up the win in the Single Cam Hornet heat race and started on the pole next to Roy Alm. Galli took the lead on the green while Alm scrambled to catch him. One caution slowed their feature with seven laps to go. Galli was again able to hold off Alm and led the remainder of the laps on his way to pick up his third feature win of the season.

It looked like Mike Garland was going to win his first Modified feature of the season. Garland started in fourth and was able to take the lead from Ray Bollinger after three laps. The track had been reworked prior to Sunday’s WDRL race and several ruts had developed causing the Modifieds to bounce around on the track. While several of the drivers bounced out of the groove, Garland held on and kept the lead through several restarts.

Marty Thompson passed Bollinger to take over second. A restart with five laps to go saw Bollinger retake second for a short time. Thompson was able to pass him on the backstretch and then he went to work on Garland. Thompson tried the inside but there was no place to go. On the last lap, Thompson went to the high side and was able to get by Garland with just a few feet to go before the checkered flag. This was Thompson’s third Modified feature win of the season.

Nathan Balensiefen and Leon Cade ran door to door in the opening laps of the Street Stock feature. Cade was able to take the lead on the front stretch but Balensiefen would pull back by him on the back stretch. Cade clipped one of the large tires on the inside of the track causing it to roll out onto the racing surface. Keith Lucas, who had been running in a side by side battle with Jamie Balensiefen, had no place to go as the tire landed right in front of him. Hitting the tire took Lucas hard into the outside wall.

Balensiefen kept the lead when Cade pulled into the pits for repairs. Jamie Balensiefen pulled around Justin Rutledge for second. Nathan Balensiefen took the checkers for his fourth Street Stock feature win this season. Jamie Balensiefen and Justin Rutledge finished second and third. Cade placed fourth.

The Late Model class couldn’t get their act together as they tried to start their feature. After taking five attempts and ten minutes they finally got their first lap in. Travis Rokey was three wheeling as he led the first half of their twenty five lap event. Jeff “Bone” Larson was working on Rokey, getting up to his door several times before making the pass stick with fourteen to go. The battle for third through fifth was intense. Bryan Byers got by Billy Tuckwell to take over third while Jason Jaggers stuck right with them in fifth. Larson stayed in the lead as they battled behind him. Byers passed Rokey to take over second place with 12 to go. On the last lap Tuckwell blew by Rokey to take a third place finish. Byers finished in second and Larson took his fifth win of the year. Rich Bell finished sixth and continues to hold the lead in the Late Model point standings.

            Nathan Balensiefen Wins Balensiefen Memorial

An emotional night for the Balensiefen family turned to jubilation when one of their family members won the Jerry Balensiefen Memorial Street Stock feature.  Nathan Balensiefen came back from a first lap crash to take the win in the race honoring his grandfather.

Brothers Todd and Jamie Balensiefen were also racing in the same feature.  Todd started on the outside of the front row, next to pole sitter Leon Cade, while Nathan started in third. Jamie started in ninth after dropping out of the heat race earlier. As the race went green Nathan and Cade tangled and spun bringing out the caution and a complete restart.

The next time they started Todd powered to the top and grabbed the lead. He hung onto the lead for five laps, but spun in turn two, bringing out the second caution. Cade, who was running in second, also pulled into the pits to have a flat changed. This left Marty Gradert and Nathan Balensiefen side by side on the front row. Nathan quickly grabbed the lead. Gradert pulled off two laps later which allowed Randy Lucas to move up to second. He was able to pass Balensiefen on the inside for the lead, but that only lasted for half a lap. Nathan pulled back ahead on the back stretch and the rest of the race was his.

Now Jamie Balensiefen entered the mix. After running third, he was able to make his move around Lucas and take over second place. He tried to make a move on the inside, but Nathan was again able to pull away and take the checkered flag. Jamie finished second ahead of Lucas. Angie Carrington finished third. Todd Balensiefen was able to make his way through the field to finish fifth.

As Nathan pulled into victory lane, the Balensiefen family poured onto the track to congratulate him. Many of the drivers and crew from the other race teams also came down to congratulate the brothers as they gathered with their family.

It was family night in the Modified division also. The racing Thompson family took a trifecta, sweeping first, second and third place in their feature. Jimmy Thompson picked up a heat race win earlier in the evening and started on the pole of the feature. Clint Shepard, Jr. won his first race ever in the other Modified heat and started on the outside of the front row.

Thompson pulled away on the green and had the rest of the field covered. His brother Kevin ran second for several laps until he was passed by their dad, Marty.

This was Jimmy Thompson’s second feature win of the year. Marty Thompson finished second and Kevin third. Casey Lappin held off Josh Vinnedge to finish fourth.

Kyle Fisher had everything working perfectly for him in the Dual Hornet division Friday night. Fisher picked up a heat race win and followed that up with his first feature win a short time later. Fisher pulled out and stayed well ahead of the second place car of Jeff Seitz.  Behind Seitz there was a pack of five cars that were swapping positions every lap. Dave Roggy took his time in weaving through the pack and finished third. Tony & Tim Provenzano finished fourth and fifth.

Shane Whittington picked up his second Single Hornet feature win of the season. Whittington led the charge from flag to flag. Jarrod Galli picked off the second place car of Mark Sutton with three to go, but Whittington had built up enough lead that he wasn’t able to get close enough to make a try for the lead. Galli finished second ahead of Sutton and Hank Henderliter.

The Late Model feature was the last race on the program. If anyone let early they missed a whale of a race. Denny Eckrich, a WDRL regular from Tiffen, IA, came to check out the track for the upcoming July 2nd Bureau County Speedway Firecracker 50 WDRL special.

In his first visit to the track he picked up a win in their heat race and held Jeff Larson to a second place finish. Richie Bell won the other heat and started on the outside of the front row next to Eckrich. Bell shot out to the lead on the green flag with Eckrich in second. Larson pulled ahead of Eckrich to take second on the third lap. Their twenty five lap feature was only slowed by two cautions.

There were only three laps to go when the race for the lead got very interesting as the slower cars from the rear of the field came into play. Bell was held up for a few moments but managed to make his way through the slow cars without losing the lead. Larson, who was still sticking to the high side, almost lost second place when the lapped cars trapped him. Larson dove to the middle, going through an opening between two cars that wasn’t there seconds before.

Bell picked up his second feature trophy of the year. Larson and Eckrich finished second and third. Bryan Moon and Travis Rokey rounded out the top five. Jason Jaggers came back from catching on fire in the heat race to take sixth place.

The Bureau County Speedway 2nd Annual Firecracker 50 WDRL Late Model special will be run Sunday, July 2nd.  This race will pay $5000 to the winner of the exciting Late Model feature.

This will be followed up with a $10,000 to win UMP Summernationals special on Friday, July 7th. This is the first time the UMP Summernational series has made a visit to Bureau County Speedway, one of the fastest tracks in the Midwest. There won’t be an empty seat in the house for either of these huge events.

Hess Takes First Feature at Bureau County Speedway

Peoria’s Charlie Hess drove the black #128 car to a victory in the Modified feature at Bureau County Speedway Friday night. Hess led the early laps but Josh Vinnedge took the lead on lap 6 and looked like he had the feature in the bag. He fell a few laps short of taking another feature win when he burned off his right rear tire and stopped on the back stretch.

Hess took over the lead on the restart and held off Mike Garland to take his first feature win at Bureau County. Ray Bollinger finished third. Billy Tuckwell finished fourth. He climbed out of the Modified and right into his Late Model to run his second feature in a row.

Jeff Larson started on the pole and promptly left the field behind. The track was smooth and extremely fast. The track was graded before the races began, putting the program 45 minutes late in starting. Then it was graded again at intermission, taking another 45 minutes. All of the classes took advantage of the flat, smooth surface and the cars were all faster than usual.

Travis Rokey ran in second behind Larson. Steve Oeder picked of Rokey for second place and stayed in that position until he collected the backstretch wall with eight laps to go.  Rokey took back second place finished in that position. Larson took the win for his fourth win in a row. Bryan Moon placed fourth. Richie Bell passed Bryan Byers on the last lap to finish fifth.

Jarrod Galli picked up his second feature win in the single Hornet division. Galli pulled away from Roy Alm, who was running in second place. Jimmy Johnson passed Mark Sutton to take third. Sutton dropped to fifth behind Troy Hasbrook.

Dave Roggy won his second Dual Hornet feature in a row. He held the lead while Rob Hammitt and Jeff Seitz battled door to door behind him for second and third. Kyle Fisher finished fourth ahead of Tim Provenzano.

Leon Cade picked up the win in the Skooner’z Street Stock feature. Nathan Balensiefen tried several times to pass him, but Cade was able to remain out in front throughout their feature. Randy Lucas finished third behind Balensiefen. Todd Balensiefen drove Justin Rutledge’s car to a fourth place finish ahead of Keith Lucas.

The drivers will receive double points for their finishing positions during Friday’ nights races.

Wild Ride for Sell Sunday at Bureau County Speedway

If you stayed home Sunday and didn’t go to the races at Bureau County Speedway you missed a wild program. The night had it all – barrel rolls, extrication, free flags for the kids, three wide racing and a great late model feature.

The night started on a heart stopping note. Nick Sell of Oglesby came through turn four on the third lap of the Street Stock feature and tried to avoid Larry Yardley’s sideways car. They just touched, but it was enough to send Sell’s car sideways and it quickly launched into a series of three barrel rolls down the front stretch. The second roll was at least 8 feet in the air. The car landed on its wheels but Sell was injured. He had to be extricated by the A-1 Fire & Rescue Service and the Princeton Ambulance squad. The roof of his Street Stock was cut off and Sell was placed carefully onto a back board for his trip to the hospital. He was later found not to have any broken bones, but required an overnight stay in the hospital.

The rest of the Street Stock feature was action packed, with the drivers even attempting to race three wide down the back stretch, without success. Randy Lucas led the opening laps but lost the lead in the Street Stock feature to Justin Rutledge after four laps. Rutledge would spin out two laps later and turn the lead over to Leon Cade. Cade stuck to the inside as he led the rest of the race, holding Lucas in second place. Nathan Balensiefen came back up to third after he was sent to the back of the field for having a crew member come out on the track and try to repair a dangling body panel.

Cade took the feature win for the third time this year. Earlier both Keith and Randy Lucas each picked up a heat win. Randy finished second followed by Nathan and Jamie Balensiefen and Keith Lucas.

Jeff “Bone” Larson regularly runs a Modified at Freeport, but Sunday was the first time he brought it to Princeton. He won a heat race and started on the pole of the feature. Bill Tuckwell, who is also a well known late model driver, brought both his modified and a late model to compete Sunday. Tuckwell won the other heat and started on the outside of the front row.

Larson took off on the green flag and gradually put some distance on the field. The class ran flag to flag without a single caution. Behind Larson, Tuckwell, Josh Vinnedge and Marty Thompson were putting on a great passing demonstration. Vinnedge ran second for the first 10 laps while Tuckwell and Thompson battled door to door behind him. Then Tuckwell made his move, passing both cars and taking over second place. That didn’t last long, as Thompson picked off both cars and then he took over second place. Vinnedge made another try but got held up by a lapped car and dropped back to fourth. Tuckwell was able to hold off Thompson to take a second place finish in his first visit to the Speedway in a modified.

Larson collected $100 extra from the staff of Skoonerz for having the name Skoonerz on his shirt in victory lane. Although it was written on masking tape and stuck to his shirt it earned him the extra cash. He won $50 for the Modified feature and came back out and won the Late Model feature a few minutes later, which earned him the extra $50 bucks.

When Dennis Erb of Carpentersville pulled into the pits Sunday afternoon everyone knew that it was going to be an interesting late model race. Erb, who usually runs the big dollar shows, was checking out the track prior to the July 7th UMP Summer National Race. Erb led the first 11 laps until a caution came out. On the restart, Larson, who had been running second, got a great jump and took over the lead. Erb had Mike Provenzano and Richie Bell breathing down his neck. Bell saw his opportunity and dove around Erb to take over second place with ten laps to go. Erb took back second place for two laps but Bell made his move on the bottom of the front stretch this time to take second back again.

The caution came out with only two laps to go when Mike Provenzano dropped a drive shaft and Bryan Byers car snapped a connecting rod.

The two lap dash saw Larson take the checkers. Erb was able to get by Bell for second. Jason Jaggers had his best run of the season finishing fourth after earlier winning a heat race. Tuckwell moved up from an 11th place starting position to finish fifth. He had ended up in the deep mud in turn four after a spin on the third lap of the feature and had to be towed out.

Steve Lance finished sixth after starting 17th. He had driven from Glasford to Dubuque, IA to race, only to get rained out. He drove back to Princeton and made it just in time to run the feature.

Roy Alm held off Friday night’s feature winner, Shane Whittington to take his sixth feature win of the year. Hank Henderliter finished third and Mark Sutton fourth.

Dave Roggy picked up the heat race and feature win in the Dual Hornet feature. He and the other feature winners all picked up the extra $50 for having a Skoonerz’ shirt on. If he and the other feature winners win again next Friday night they will be getting an extra cash payout from Skoonerz for the double header weekend. Next Friday, June 16th, Dad’s will be admitted for only $5. The drivers will be competing for double points in all of the features.

Shane Whittington Takes First Feature Win

It was a cool night at the track but the action was hot and heavy at Bureau County Speedway. With the track slick and black the Hornet tires were really squealing. Shane Whittington didn’t let it bother him as he led every lap of the Single Hornet feature to take his first feature win. Jarrod Galli, last weeks feature winner, stuck right with Whittington but couldn’t get close enough to make a pass. Earlier in the evening Whittington also won the Single Hornet heat race. Troy Hasbrook finished in third.

Jeff Seitz picked up his fourth feature win of the season in the Dual Hornet Feature. He also won their heat race earlier in the program. Rob Hammitt and Tim Provenzano finished second and third in the feature. Kyle Fisher and Dave Roggy placed fourth and fifth.

Nathan Balensiefen picked up his second Street Stock feature trophy in a row. Behind him the competition was running door to door. Justin Rutledge held off Randy Lucas to take a second place finish. Keith Lucas finished fourth ahead of Jamie Balensiefen.

Jeff “Bone” Larson passed Bryan Byers to take over the lead in the Auto Zone Late Model feature with 11 laps to go. A spin by several cars with six laps to go bunched the field. Larson got his usual good start from the green and held off the competition to take the win. Bryan Moon tucked right in behind him to finish in second place. Jerry Pitts and Byers finished third and fourth.

Josh Vinnedge is “Mr Smooth” in the Modified division. Vinnedge led every lap on his way to his fourth feature win of the season. Mike Garland stuck right behind him in second place. Casey Lappin and Ray Bollinger battled for position with Lappin crossing the line in third.

Racing resumes this Sunday, June11,  with gates opening at 3 p.m. and racing underway at 5 p.m.. Skooner’z Bar & Grill has a bunch of door prizes for the fans. They have posted an extra cash prize for any driver that can win Sunday and on their other sponsored night on June 16th

Galli Breaks Alm’s Win Streak

Jarrod Galli has run second to Roy Alm since the season began. Friday night at Bureau County Speedway Galli broke Alm’s five race win streak in the Single Hornet Division. Due to the limited amount of cars only a feature event was run for this class. Galli started on the outside of the front row and led Alm to the green flag. Alm was never able to catch the young driver on his way to his first feature win. Galli took the checkered flag in the 12 lap feature. Alm finished second ahead of Troy Hasbrook and Jimmy Johnson.

The winners in Friday’s features were surrounded by royalty as all three Miss Bureau County Fair Queens presented the drivers their trophies and flags.

“Smiling Jake” Gould is starting a win streak of his own, picking up his third Dual Hornet feature win in a row. Gould held off a determined Kyle Fisher as he led every lap. Their race ran caution free until the last lap when Trent Peterson, who had been running 6th, broke a suspension part and stopped on the top of turn four. This left a one lap shoot out for the win. When the race restarted Gould was still able to pull away and take the feature win. Kevin Elgin made his move on the last lap, passing Jeff Seitz to take over third place.

The track was extremely fast Friday night and the Late Model drivers were flying. Jeff “Bone” Larson blew everyone away on his way to the checkered flag in the Late Model feature. Bob Freeburg started on the pole and it looked like he was going to be able to give Larson some close competition. Bryan Byers took over second place on lap three as Freeburg dropped into third place. Freeburg broke 5 laps later. Byers was holding onto second but Travis Rokey was gaining on him lap after lap. Rokey worked himself up to Byers door and the two cars battled for a couple of laps before Rokey settled into second place.  By the half way point in the twenty-five lap race, Larson had built up a half a lap lead over the second place car of Rokey.

The third caution came out with five laps to go when Bryan Moon tagged and spun Vervynck’s car. This shortened up Larson’s lead but he was still able to pull away from the rest of the field and cross the line a long distance ahead of the pack. Rokey finished second and Byers third. Richie Bell finished fourth. Steve Oeder appeared to have some of his handling problems of the last few weeks fixed as he took a fifth place finish.

The Street Stock feature was one of the best this year with the top five drivers dicing for position. Keith Lucas has been racing at the Speedway ever since it opened. He showed the “kids” how it was done Friday night as he held them off to take the Street Stock feature win.

Early in the race Leon Cade was running second. He made his pass for the lead, just as Angie Carrington spun. This put Lucas back into the lead. On the restart Cade slid high into the crumbs and lost several positions. That left it wide open for Nathan Balensiefen to make his move and he took over second place with Justin Rutledge close behind. Balensiefen tried several times but Lucas was able to slam the door on him and keep the lead. Lucas took the win with Balensiefen, Rutledge and Cade rounding out the top four.

Jamie Balensiefen was given a seventh place finish even though he didn’t finish the race. Speedway officials determined they made an incorrect ruling when Balensienfen had earlier spun out during the race. He was scored where he was running when he was eliminated from the race.

Next weekend there are two races on the schedule, Friday, June 9th  and Sunday, June 11th. Skooner’z Bar & Grill is offering special door prizes for the fans and driver’s prizes both nights. Gates will open at 3 p.m. on Sunday with racing at 5 p.m.

“Smiling Jake” Gould picked up his second feature win of the weekend in the Dual Cam Hornet Division by leading every lap of their 15 lap feature. Jeff Seitz finished second ahead of Rob Hammitt. Alex Fisch placed fourth and Trent Peterson crossed the line in fifth.

Randy Lucas picked up his first feature win of the season in the Street Stock division. Lucas made a last lap pass past the leader Justin Rutledge to take the win.  Rutledge finished second followed by Nathan Balensiefen, Marty Gradert and Leon Cade.
