POIDINGER EARNS ROOKIES ROCKIN’ SPORTS BAR ROOKIE OF THE YEAR HONORS
WEBSTER CITY, Iowa (Nov. 7) -- Signing in at the pit gate, paying your entry fee and getting your wristband strapped on after arriving at the racetrack is normally not a momentous occasion for an O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series driver.
For Jay Poidinger, however, the task of entering his 54th O’Reilly USMTS event of the season on Saturday, Oct. 28, at Bolivar Speedway USA was a momentous occasion.
When the 36-year-old driver from Somerset, Wis., took the green flag in his heat race, he assured himself the title of Rookies Rockin' Sports Bar Rookie of the Year for 2006. Poidinger's show-up points on Saturday made it mathematically impossible for second-place Jason Friesen of Sutton, Neb., to overtake him for the honor.
For his efforts, Poidinger earned $2,500 from Rookies Rockin' Sports Bar. Located in downtown Clear Lake, Iowa, Rookies Rockin’ Sports Bar is owned and operated by O’Reilly USMTS competitors Al and Mike Hejna. Al went on to win the main event Saturday night.
Poidinger pocketed $19,130 in total earnings for the season, scoring six top-10 finishes. His most memorable event of the season came in the inaugural visit by the O’Reilly USMTS to the all-new Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo. starting last (19th) on the starting grid for the Real Racing Wheels "B" Main, Poidinger passed 18 cars in 15 laps en route to winning the race.
He wound up 10th in both the Western Region and Reich Concrete/Yeager Machine Northeast Region final standings, as well as ninth in the Central Region to earn a spot in ‘The Hunt’ for the O’Reilly USMTS National Championship where he finished 11th in the final rankings.
Poidinger's sponsors on his black No. 49x GRT Modified include EmpireHouse, Majerus Garage, Flyin J Motors, DirtCards.com, J & J Graphics and R.A. Benson Motorsports.
Rookies Rockin' Sports Bar Rookie of the Year Final Points (top 5):

HEJNA COMPLETES MEMPHIS SWEEP WHILE SHRYOCK SECURES EIGHTH O’REILLY USMTS TITLE
By Brian Neal
MEMPHIS, Mo. (Nov. 5) -- The 2006 racing season for the O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series came to a close Sunday at the Pepsi Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, Mo., during the 5th Annual Pepsi/Mountain Dew Mid-America Nationals. Al Hejna of Clear Lake, Iowa, swept the weekend, while Fertile, Iowa's Kelly Shryock claimed his unprecedented eighth straight O’Reilly USMTS National Championship.
Mark Burgtorf of Quincy, Ill., Donovan Lodge of Moline, Ill., Hejna, Michael Long of Quincy, Ill., and Tony Fraise of Donnellson, Iowa, topped the five heat races while Tommy Myer of Blooming Prairie, Minn., and Zack VanderBeek of New Sharon, Iowa, picked up the Real Racing Wheels "B" Main wins. Series provisionals for a starting spot in the Holley "A" Main went to Jay Poidinger of Somerset, Wis., and Ryan Meyer of Liberty, Ill., to set the field of 24 cars for the 35-lap contest.
Clinging to a slim 12-point lead over 14th-starting VanderBeek in ‘The Hunt’ for the O’Reilly USMTS National Championship, Shryock locked in the 17th starting spot with a third-place finish in his Real Racing Wheels "B" Main and the final battle for the crown was set.
Drawing the front row for the main event were Mark Schulte of Delhi, Iowa, and Fraise. Fraise, the 2005 Pepsi Scotland County Speedway track champion, took advantage of his front row starting spot to jump out into the lead on lap 1, with Hejna close behind in second. Hejna made his move into the top spot by going under Fraise on lap 3 and that was all she wrote.
Hejna led the final 32 laps uncontested, and lapped up to the ninth place car to make a sweep of the weekend. Fraise held on for a second place finish, Long came home third, Mark Noble of Blooming prairie, Minn., came from 11th to finish in fourth, with Myer coming from 12th to round out the top-5.
Shryock claimed the Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors as he passed 11 cars en route to a sixth place finish. With Shryock coming home in sixth and VanderBeek following in seventh, Shryock held on to claim his eighth O'Reilly USMTS National Championship with a final 19-point margin over VanderBeek.
While Shryock and VanderBeek locked horns for the top spot in the final rankings, Jason Friesen of Sutton, Neb., struggled in Sunday's main event and finished 17th. It was good enough, however, to hang on to a third place finish in the final 2006 standings as he nipped Myer by just three points. Watertown, S.D.'s Jon Tesch completed the top-5 in the final points tally.
After 59 races at 33 tracks in nine States, The O’Reilly USMTS road warriors have wrapped up their nine-month campaign for the 2006 season. AL HEJNA STOMPS O’REILLY USMTS FIELD AT PEPSI SCOTLAND COUNTY SPEEDWAY
by Brian Neal
MEMPHIS, Mo. (Nov. 4) -- Al Hejna of Clear Lake, Iowa, ran away with the win Saturday on the first night of the Pepsi/Mountain Dew Mid-America Nationals at the Pepsi Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, Mo. The event is the final weekend of racing in 2006 for both the O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series and the Pepsi Scotland County Speedway.
Forty-three fierce drivers and their Modifieds signed in to battle it out for the 24 starting spots in the 30-lap, $2,000-to-win Holley "A" Main. Hejna and his younger brother, Mike, along with Jon Tesch of Watertown, S.D., David Wietholder of Liberty, Ill., and Martin Bennett of Ankeny, Iowa, all took home wins in the five qualifying heat races. Michael Long of Quincy, Ill., and Brian Shaw of Brownsdale, Minn., took the top spots in the Real Racing Wheels "B" Mains to set the field of 22 cars for the main event. The final two starting spots went to Tommy Myer of Blooming Prairie, Minn., and Brad McEwan of Storm Lake, Iowa, each taking a series provisional to get into the Holley "A" Main.
Mark Burgtorf of Quincy, Ill., and Al Hejna drew the front row of the feature race, with Hejna taking the lead on the drop of the green flag. Hejna and Burgtorf had a great side-by-side battle going for the lead, as Mike Hejna quickly moved up from his sixth place starting spot to challenge them for the lead. Al Hejna, however, moved away from the pack and quickly pulled out to a half-straight-away lead.
The first and only caution came out on lap 18 for Wietholder's spin in turn 1. By that time, Al Hejna had built a half-track lead over the battle for second between Mike Hejna and Burgtorf.
On the restart, "The A-Train" once again took off into the lead, leaving Mike Hejna and Burgtorf battling for second. Al Hejna pulled away from the field over the final 12 laps to take home the win and the $2,000 top prize.
The battle for second went to Burgtorf, Mike Hejna settled for third, Zack VanderBeek of New Sharon, Iowa, started 12th and moved up to finish in fourth, with Long coming from 13th to round out the top-5.
Mark Schulte of Delhi, Iowa, took home the Olympic Fire Protection Hard Charger honors after starting in the 21st spot and passing 12 cars to cross the finish line in ninth.
Seven-time defending O’Reilly USMTS national champion Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa, finished sixth, which allowed VanderBeek to cut into his lead in ‘The Hunt’ for the O’Reilly USMTS National Championship. Entering Sunday's finale, Shryock maintains a 12-point advantage over VanderBeek, who is trying to become the first driver to swipe the national crown away from Shryock.
With a 14th-place finish, Sutton, Neb.'s Jason Friesen continues to hold down the third spot in ‘The Hunt’ standings, but will be mathematically eliminated from title contention when Shryock or VanderBeek take a green flag on Sunday.
Who will come out on top? The final night of 2006 will be one race you don't want to miss.
After 58 races at 33 tracks in nine States, The O’Reilly USMTS road warriors will wrap their nine-month campaign with the final night of the 5th Annual Pepsi/Mountain Dew Mid-America Nationals at the Pepsi Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, Mo., on Sunday, Nov. 5. Gates open at 12 noon, with hot laps at 2:30 and racing at 3 p.m.

PEPSI/MOUNTAIN DEW MID-AMERICA NATIONALS THIS SATURDAY AND SUNDAY
MEMPHIS, Mo. (Nov. 1) -- After 57 races at 33 tracks in nine States, The O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series road warriors will wrap their nine-month campaign with the 5th Annual Pepsi/Mountain Dew Mid-America Nationals at the Pepsi Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, Mo., this Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 4-5.
Featuring America's top Modified teams on the racey 3/8-mile clay oval, a huge field of big-name drivers and their machines are expected to be on hand to close the curtain on the most intriguing and successful season so far for the O’Reilly USMTS.
Leading the invasion will be seven-time defending O’Reilly USMTS national champion Kelly Shryock of Fertile, Iowa, as he looks to capture his unprecedented eighth title. Trailing New Sharon, Iowa's Zack VanderBeek by two points in ‘The Hunt’ for the O’Reilly USMTS National Championship entering last Sunday's O’Reilly Auto Parts Fall Classic at Bolivar (Mo.) Speedway USA, Shryock captured his record-setting 30th O’Reilly USMTS main event of the season and garnered control of ‘The Hunt’ points over VanderBeek (1,102 to 1,080) entering the 5th Annual Pepsi/Mountain Dew Mid-America Nationals doubleheader.
Both drivers have been prolific at Memphis. Most recently, Shryock finished third at the Pizza Hut USRA Nationals while VanderBeek was fourth. When the O’Reilly USMTS last visited the Pepsi Scotland County Speedway three months ago, Shryock was fourth while VanderBeek was sixth. Shryock is a three-time O’Reilly USMTS main event winner at the facility, while VanderBeek has been a two-class regular where he scored two runner-up finishes in the USRA Modifieds and won two USRA Stock Car main events during the 2006 season.
Chasing the lead pair in ‘The Hunt’ for the O’Reilly USMTS National Championship will be third-ranked Jason Friesen of Sutton, Neb. As the only driver in the top-6 in points without a win during ‘The Hunt’, Friesen in eager for another victory after picking up the season-opening win at the Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, Neb., on March 10. He trails VanderBeek by 48 points entering this weekend's finale.
Still alive, but virtually mathematically eliminated from any chance at ‘The Hunt’ crown, Tommy Myer of Blooming Prairie, Minn. (980 points) and Jon Tesch of Watertown, S.D. (973 points) will have victory -- as well as an improved final standing -- on their minds.
The region's top drivers are expected to be in action this weekend, including Steve Arpin, Brent Bohmont, Johnny Bone Jr., Dustin Boney, Mark Burgtorf, Scott Drake, Corey Dripps, Tony Fraise, Chevy Hadan, Bruce Hanford, Al Hejna, Mike Hejna, David Holder, Steve Holzkamper, Jason Hughes, Willy Kraft, Brad McEwan, Alan Mondus, Jake Neal, Mark Noble, Paul Parker, Brad Pinkerton, Jay Poidinger, Ryan Ruter, Mike Spaulding, Steve Stewart, Ron Ver Beek, Mike Wedelstadt, Tommy Weder Jr. and many more.
Several local aces are also expected to contend for the $2,000 top prize both days, including 2006 track champion Ryan Meyer, Michael Long, Mike Bennett, Jared Durbin, David Weitholder, Bob Dale, Martin Bennett and Dennis Elliott.
A field of 24 cars will start the Holley “A” Main each night, with qualifying through Heat Races and Real Racing Wheels “B” Mains. The top 12 cars in Home Pride Passing Points accumulated in the Heat Races will be locked into the Holley “A” Main. An additional 10 cars will qualify from the Real Racing Wheels “B” Mains, with two provisional starters added to the Holley “A” Main. Additional track provisionals may also be awarded.
Joining the O’Reilly USMTS Modifieds on the racing card each day will be USRA Stock Cars, USRA B-Mods and USRA Hobby Stocks.
On Saturday, Nov. 4, gates open 1 p.m., with hot laps at 3:30 and racing at 4 p.m. Times are one hour earlier on Sunday, with gates opening at 12 noon, hot laps at 2:30 and racing at 3 p.m.
The Pepsi Scotland County Speedway is located one mile west of Memphis on U.S. Hwy. 136 to State Route 15, then east (at the Scotland County Fairgrounds). SHRYOCK SNARES O’REILLY AUTO PARTS FALL CLASSIC, TAKES CONTROL IN ‘THE HUNT’
BOLIVAR, Mo. (Oct. 29) -- Events on Sunday afternoon at Bolivar Speedway USA could not have unfolded any better for Kelly Shryock. Trailing Zack VanderBeek by two points in ‘The Hunt’ for the O’Reilly USMTS National Championship entering Sunday's O’Reilly Auto Parts Fall Classic finale, Shryock needed a good finish coupled with some good luck to regain control of his own destiny.
The racing surface at the high-banked clay oval quickly turned dry during qualifying heat races, eventually becoming “rubbered down” during the final two heats. With tires blistering after just 10 laps, drivers knew that starting positions and tire strategy would weigh heavy in the 35-lap main event.
While Shryock earned the most Home Pride Passing Points to garner a redraw spot in the main event, VanderBeek suffered a flat tire in his heat race and was forced to take a provisional starting spot in the Holley "A" Main after failing to finish the second Real Racing Wheels "B" Main. With VanderBeek starting 23rd in the 25-car field, a youngster from the grandstands stepped up and drew the pole position for Shryock to start the main event.
As anticipated, the main event was riddled with cautions -- 13 in all -- as the abrasive track surface took its toll on right rear tires. Of the 15 drivers who finished the race only five were on the same tires they started the contest with. In all, 15 of the 25 starters suffered a flat tire.
Shryock, however, never changed tires and never relinquished the top spot as he captured his 30th O’Reilly USMTS main event of the season. The win was worth $3,000 as he eclipsed $100,000 in earnings for the 2006 racing season. One of the drivers that did change a tire during the feature was VanderBeek as he struggled to a 12th-place finish, resulting in Shryock gaining control of ‘The Hunt’ points standings over VanderBeek (1,102 to 1,080) with just one weekend of racing left to go.
Although he led every lap, Shryock nearly led all but the final lap as Jeremy Payne of Cave City, Ark., made a bid for the top spot on the final lap, but fell one car-length short of capturing his career-first O’Reilly USMTS checkers. Storm Lake, Iowa's Brad McEwan held the runner-up spot for the first 33 laps before falling victim to Payne and finishing third. None of the top-3 finishers suffered a flat tire during the 35-lapper.
After starting 16th on the grid and changing a tire midway through the contest, Jason Friesen of Sutton, Neb., took home a fourth-place paycheck and found himself solidly in third place in ‘The Hunt’ standings just 48 markers behind VanderBeek. Myer changed a tire early in the feature race Sunday, moved up to score fifth at the finish and jumped to fourth in ‘The Hunt’ rankings with 980 points. Jon Tesch of Watertown, S.D., was a victim of mechanical gremlins all weekend and slipped to fifth in the points after a DNF and 24th place finish on Sunday.
After 57 races at 33 tracks in nine States, The O’Reilly USMTS road warriors will wrap their nine-month campaign with the 5th Annual Pepsi/Mountain Dew Mid-America Nationals at the Pepsi Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, Mo., on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 4-5.
