Cecil Claims Shorty Gardner Memorial; Tungate, Wheatley, and Humphrey Also Win at Bluegrass Speedway
Bardstown, KY-June 21, 2008- Bluegrass Speedway presented the 5th Annual Shorty Gardner Memorial for the WBRT 1320-AM Sportsman on Saturday evening and Roger Cecil of Bardstown, KY scored the $500 payday for his victory. Other feature winners for the evening included Tim Tungate of Campbellsville, KY in 44 Auto Mart Super Late Models, Jason Wheatley of Loretto, KY in Kentucky Cooperage Modifieds, and Joe David Humphrey of Loretto, KY in Street Stocks.
The 5th Annual Shorty Gardner Memorial event would see Rob Jones take the initial green flag and open up a sizable lead, only to have pair of caution flags erase his lead. Roger Cecil would pressure Jones after the second caution and would work his way past Jones for the lead on lap 14 in turn one and would drive on to pick up the win in the 5th Annual Shorty Gardner Memorial race behind the wheel of the 44 Auto Mart/El Jimador Restaurant/First Financial Credit/Teamsters Local 89/RER Concrete/Cecil Trucking/M&M Get-N-Go sponsored #5 Chevy Monte Carlo, Dale Meers Race Engines powered machine. Jones would claim runner-up honors, with Logan Whitis would finish third. An incident on the final lap involving the fourth through sixth place cars would see Lois Campbell sneek through to finish fourth, with Bill Wallace claiming the final position in the top five. Cecil would be the top qualifier among fifteen entries with a lap of 18.865 seconds. Whitis would claim the dash win, while Troy Scott would win the heat.
The 44 Auto Mart Super Late Model feature would see Tim Tungate take the lead, with Scotty Earl, Johnny Wheeler, Aaron Hatton, and David Webb in pursuit. Dustin Neat would take fifth on lap 2. As Tungate would begin to open his lead over Earl, Hatton would pressure Wheeler for third, but could not make the pass. Tungate would continue to slowly build his lead by lap 10, with Wheeler closing on Earl for second, while Hatton continued to pressure Wheeler for third. The lone caution of the race flew on lap 14 when Matthew Rigdon spun in the center of turns three and four, with second place Earl coming to a halt and making contact with Rigdon, but able to continue and would be put back in his running position. The restart would see Hatton dive beneath Wheeler and take third off of turn two. Hatton would begin to mount a charge on Earl for second, with Neat pressuring Wheeler for fourth. Neat would slide to fourth on lap 16, while Tungate would again begin to open his lead. Lap 18 would see Hatton turn up the wick on Earl and that battle would allow Tungate to increase his lead even more. The final five circuits would see the top five remain the same, with Tungate scoring his 28th career Bluegrass Speedway Super Late Model victory aboard the Logan and Jane Parrott owned, Darrell Morrison Mechanical/Osborne Construction/Campbellsville University/Guardian Mortgage/J&L Title/Wilson Plumbing/Commonwealth Building Products/ABC Child Care/Barnes Auto Sales/The Shack/Terry Reynolds Auto Sales/B&W Auto Recyclers/Jeff’s Food Mart/Phillips Lanes and Restaurant/Cox Properties/Smoke Pit Bar-B-Q/Heritage Hills Molding/WMB Motorsports/MDW Transport/JET Pressure Washing sponsored #18 C.J. Rayburn Race Cars, Pro Power Race Engines machine. Earl would finish second, with Hatton taking third, while Neat and Wheeler would complete the top five. Wheeler was top qualifier among twelve entries with 16.042 second lap. Earl would win the dash, while Jeff Watson would score the heat victory.
In the Kentucky Cooperage Modified main event, Joe Gray would jump to the early lead and hold the top spot for three laps until Jason Wheatley would slide by on lap 4 and survive a pair of restarts with two laps remaining to pick up his first open-wheel checkered flag of the season at Bluegrass Speedway, where he was the 2007 track champion for the division. Wheatley would stave of the charges of last week’s winner Benji Lee over the final laps and would get an excellent drive off of turn two on the final lap after the final restart to secure the victory in the Tommy and Kaylee Wheatley owned, B&W Metals/Rosewood Bar and Grill/Gootee &Mattingly Heating and Air/Central KY Plumbing and Electrical/Cozy Corner/VFM Manufacturing/Wheatley Tile Flooring/Wheatley Seamless Gutters/Wheatley Auto Sales/Brady Excavating/Springfield Auto and Farm/St. Joe Garage/Top Notch Landscaping sponsored #7 Hughes Chassis, Mullins by Wheatley powered unit. Benji Lee would finish second, with Gray hanging on to score third. Randy Turpin and Johnny Lee would complete the top five. A pair of heat races would be contested, with those checkered flags falling to Johnny Lee and Gray.
The Street Stock feature would complete the evening’s activities and Joe David Humphrey would lead the way in claiming his second Street Stock feature of the season at Bluegrass Speedway, surviving a rash of cautions during the middle stages of the race and a loose handling race car at the finish. Humphrey’s victory would come behind the wheel of the Independent Stave Company/Smart Shoppers/St. Joe Garage sponsored #28 Chevy Monte Carlo. Terry Greenwell would nip Robbie Settles at the checkered flag in a photo-finish for the runner-up slot, while Jason Priddy and Willie Edelen would round out the top five. Two heat races would be contested in preliminary action, with those victories going to Johnny Cecil and Humphrey.

Eric Wells Victorious in 7th Annual June Jam at Bluegrass Speedway
Bardstown, KY-June 14, 2008- The O’Reilly Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series visited Bluegrass Speedway on Saturday evening and Eric Wells of Hazard, KY would etch his name on the winner’s list of the 7th Annual June Jam event, earning $3,000 for his efforts. Other feature event winners for the evening were Pat Hagan of New Haven, KY in the WBRT 1320-AM Sportsman and Benji Lee of Raywick, KY in the Kentucky Cooperage Modified division.
The 7th Annual June Jam O’Reilly A-Main would see outside polesitter Brad Neat take the race lead, with Tim Tungate, Victor Lee, Johnny Wheeler, and Jason Keltner giving chase. Lee would take second from Tungate on lap 2, with Keltner pressuring Wheeler for the fourth spot by lap 4. Neat would stretch his advantage to a half-straightaway advantage by the time he started working slower traffic on lap 9. Wells would begin to flex his muscle and would make his way into the top five on lap 14. As the field saw the halfway lap 15 signal, Neat would encounter heavy traffic and Lee would begin the process of reeling in the race leader. Wells would go to fourth on lap 16, past Keltner and set his sights on third place Tungate in heavy traffic. Meanwhile, Neat and Lee would work in and out of traffic, with Lee closing up even more on Neat by lap 18. As Neat and Lee began to get ready to duel for the lead, Wells would work pass Tungate for third on lap 20, with Kelter taking fourth from Tungate one trip later. Lee would close on Neat in traffic and take the lead from on lap 23, with the pair racing side-by-side down the backchute, with the pair in a dead heat at the line on lap 24, but disaster would strike as the duo would make contact entering turn one, with both cars spinning and Neat suffering left rear wheel damage and pulling pitside, with Lee having to restart at the rear of the lead lap cars. The restart would now have Wells out front, with Keltner and Tungate second and third, but Royce McGowan would spin in turn two to bring out the final caution flag of the race. The final restart would see Webb take the fourth position away from Wheeler, while Keltner mounted a topside charge for the lead from Wells. Keltner would take the lead from Wells on lap 26, but Wells would battle back and the pair would take the white flag, with Keltner holding a car length lead. Wells would mount a charge off of turn two on the final lap and pull alongside Keltner in turn three and four and would make the winning pass just before the start/finish line, winning the race by about three feet in the David Wells owned Blackstar Resources/B&W Resources/ Wells Logging/Expressions Floral and Gifts/Convenient Lube/Virginia Drilling sponsored #18 Rocket Chassis, Custom Race Engines powered machine. Webb would also make a last pass of Tungate to claim the third spot at the checkered flag, with Wheeler completing the top five. The remainder of the top ten were Victor Lee, Mike Jewell, Rocky Hodges, Tyrel Todd, and Aaron Hatton. In preliminary action, Johnny Wheeler would be the Racing Optics Top Qualifier among 34 entries with a lap of 15.783 seconds. Heat race checkered flags went to Wheeler in Wayne Bowen Racing Supply heat one, Brad Neat in K&N Performance Engineering heat two, Tim Tungate in Graphic Impressions heat three, and Victor Lee Real Racing Wheels heat four. The B-mains would be won by Jesse Lay and Larry Gray. Arnie Fields and Royce McGowan would take series provisional starts, while track provisional starting spots were taken by Dustin Neat and Bryant Woodcock.
The WBRT 1320-AM Sportsman feature event would see Pat Hagan and Roger Cecil duel for the race win the 15 lap caution free main event, with Hagan holding off the charges of Cecil to pick up the Sportsman division main event checkered flag in the Billy Holbert owned, Century 21/New Haven Car Wash/New Haven NAPA/New Haven Quik Stop/ Holbert Recordsetters sponsored #88 Chevy Monte Carlo mount. Cecil would hold off Avral Thompson for the runner-up spot, with Thompson taking third. Sam Huffer would win a race-long battle with Rob Jones to claim the fourth position at the finish. The remainder of the top ten would be Daroyl Samples, Paul Lewis, Jr., Lois Campbell, Roger Dell, and Robert Brown. Cecil would be top qualifier among 14 entries and also win the dash, while Samples would score the heat race win.
Benji Lee would open a sizable lead toward the end of the Kentucky Cooperage Modified main event and would survive a pair of restarts with two laps remaining to pick up the Open Wheel main event for the evening in the Thompson Heat and Air/Smart Shoppers/Springfield Auto and Farm Supply/B&B Motorsports/St. Joe Garage/Kirker Automotive Finishes/Brian Ballard Motorsports sponsored #03 Bandit Race Cars, Dale Meers Race Engines powered machine. Jason Wheatley would take runner-up honors, with Dion Benningfield taking third. Randy Turpin would recover from an early race spin to come home fourth, while Joe Mattingly would round out the top five. June Jam Fast Facts and Tidbits
-The June Jam first appeared on the Bluegrass Speedway schedule in 2002 and was a two day, separate show the first time. There was a special “Night Before the June Jam” that was ran that was won by Rick Corbin of Independence, KY.
-The “Night Before the June Jam” was the first event the O’Reilly Auto Parts NARA Battle of the Bluegrass Dirt Car Series presented by Arizona Sport Shirts ever sanctioned at Bluegrass Speedway.
-All June Jam events have been sanctioned by the O’Reilly Auto Parts NARA Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series presented by Arizona Sport Shirts.
-Eddie Carrier, Jr. of Salt Rock, West Virginia was the inaugural June Jam winner in 2002 over Darrell Lanigan, Rick Corbin, Joey Daniel, and James Huff. If Corbin had won both nights, he would have gotten a $1,000 bonus for winning on Friday and Saturday nights. The win by Carrier, Jr. would help the second generation racer claim the inaugural Battle of the Bluegrass Series championship back in 2002.
-The 2003 version of the June Jam saw Darrell Lanigan of Union, KY follow up a win in the Eldora Dream the weekend before with an impressive performance in the 2003 June Jam event. Steve Barnett, Steve Landrum, Whitney McQueary, and Bryan Barber completed the top five.
-The 2004 edition of the June Jam fell victim to Mother Nature as continuous afternoon rain showers forced promoters David and Anita Ferrell to cancel the event around 4:00 p.m. that afternoon with well over 30 entries already sitting in a rain soaked pit area.
-The 2005 June Jam was once again a victim of Mother Nature as rain showers began falling at the ˝ mile Nelson County dirt oval around 4:45 on Saturday afternoon after earlier showers had already wet the area. The decision was then made around 5:30 to cancel the event, with 32 Late Models in the pit area at the time of the cancellation and others parked out in the parking lot.
-For 2006, the event would go on a beautiful Saturday evening that saw the weather not play a factor in the evening’s activities and Brad Neat of Dunnville, KY would continue a mid-season hot streak of top finishes as he would claim the $3,000 payday in the June Jam over Chris Combs, Aaron Hatton, Jason Keltner, and Mike Jewell.
-Mike Jewell of Scottsburg, IN would add his name to the list of winners for the June Jam event in 2007 as the two-time and defending O’Reilly NARA Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series champion would make this event his first “BoB Late Model” win of 2007. Jewell would see the checkered flag first in front of Dustin Neat, Bryan Barber, Tyrel Todd, and Victor Lee.
-A total of fifty-five (55) different drivers have taken the green flag to start the previous June Jam events.
-There were seven drivers that made their first June Jam in 2007. They were Joey Tackett, Doug Smith, Doug Ault, David Webb, Tommy Carlton, Jason Hinkle, and Jerry Rice.
