Stacy Boles Masters Wartburg Advance Auto Parts Thunder Series Field
By Chris Tilley (C/T Marketing)
CONTACT: (606) 219-1723 or tilleyracing@hotmail.com
WARTBURG, TN (April 26, 20008)—Stacy Boles of Claxton, TN mastered a field of 22 in route to the $5,000 payday in the Advance Auto Parts Thunder Series-Sanctioned event at the Wartburg Speedway in Wartburg, TN on Saturday evening April 26, 2008 in front of a packed house. This was Boles’ second-career Advance Auto Parts Thunder Series victory. His first victory came in the spring of 2005 at the same venue.
Boles drove the Advanced Transmissions, West Haven Speed Equipment, Afco Racing Products sponsored David Hitch Racing Engines powered DWB Race Car GTO to the win.
Boles’ reflected on his night at Wartburg Speedway during the post-race interview. “I got to thank Anthony White and the Dirt White Boys for this great race-car, it’s been bad fast. When someone like: (referring to Leroy Vann, Robert Buffalo and Ron Boles) on your side, they have got more laps around this place packing the track than I have raced it, so you know we can’t do but good.”
Other Event winners during the evening included Mark Leach in the Sportsman Feature over Dale Nance, Gary Lively, Darrick York and Brian Hooks.
Darren Goins passed Rocky McNabb at the flagstand to take the win in the Pure Mini Feature event while Reagan Williams would claim the win in the Pure Street Feature and Spunky Brown would take the Front Wheel Drive feature event win.
Sunoco Dash winner Steve Smith and Tommy Kerr would parade the field of 22 to Lynn Palmer’s green flag for the start of the 50-Lap event with Kerr rolling to the low-line and the lead of the main with Kerr grabbing the lead into turn one while Smith would grab second. As the field would come off of turn four for the first lap, Anthony White would strike the front-straight wall hard bringing out the first yellow flag as a host of cars in the rear of the field would collect each-other in turn four.
In the second attempt, Kerr would parade the field around to lead the first lap with Steve Smith second, Rick Rogers, Stacy Boles and Anthony White in tow.
The next yellow flag would come out on the eighth lap as the two leaders Tommy Kerr and Steve Smith got caught up behind lapped cars and both stopping on the speedway. Due to Series procedures, Kerr and Steve Smith would tag the tail for the restart.
Rick Rogers would bring the field down to lead his first circuits of the race on the restart with Stacy Boles, Anthony White and Joe Armes the top-four. On the 11th lap, Steve Smith slowed in turn two and the caution would come out again. Rick Rogers, Boles, White, Armes and Dan Tipton would be the front five at the yellow.
The lapped car of Dewayne Pesterfield would get in front of leader Rick Rogers on the back-chute, and after evasive action by trotting through the infield, kept second spot while Stacy Boles became the new leader of the race on lap-16.
The yellow flag would come out on the 17th lap as Jeff Neubert spun in turn four.
Boles would keep out front and on the 18th lap, Richard Smith spun on his own in turn four bringing out yet another yellow flag.
The next yellow would come on lap 21 for Mike Hill, Tommy Kerr and Leroy Vann who collected each-other in turn two. The field reset would see Boles up front, Rogers second, White third, Armes fourth and Mike Weeks fifth.
At the half-way point Boles still showed a commanding lead with Rogers still five car lengths out of the top spot.
Boles would go around Richard Smith on the 30th lap to put him a lap down looking for his next victim which would be Jeff Franklin and then contact between the two on the 33rd circuit would still see Boles on top stretching his lead to ten car lengths. Boles would also go around Jeff Neubert on the 37th lap to put him a lap down.
As the field reached the 10 to go mark, lapped traffic would get in the leader’s way and cause the gap of Boles’ lead to diminish to just a bumper.
Caution on lap 41 for Mike Weeks stopping in turn two would bring out the final yellow with Boles holding off Rogers for the remaining laps to capture the win with White third, Armes fourth and Dan Tipton rounding out the top-five.
In preliminary action, the Powermaster Fast Qualifier of the night was Steve Smith locking in a 12:269 second lap. Steve Smith and Mike Weeks both took wins during the Sunoco Dash events.

ERB TAKES THE BOHLANDER 100 AT PEORIA
SPEEDWAY
by Jeff Adams
(PEORIA, IL) 2007 UMP National Champion Dennis Erb of Carpentersville dueled
2007 NASCAR Illinois State Champion Tim Lance, for 50 laps, before finally
making the pass for the lead on lap 87and holding on to win the “Don Bohlander
100” for Parkinson’s research at Peoria Speedway Saturday night.
On a cool night, the action was red-hot, with a new track configuration proving
to be nearly record-breaking fast. In time trials, Davenport, IA driver Brian
Harris missed the all-time track record by a mere .016 with a lap of 12.481. The
top 6 qualifiers were locked into the feature event, and re-drew for the top 6
starting positions. Heat races were won by Steve Lance, Jr. and Charley Hess,
setting the 20 car starting field.
Lance and Hebron, IN driver Shawn Toczek paced the field for the start of the
100 lap feature, with Lance finally getting the jump after 2 aborted re-starts.
Lance held the lead over several caution periods until Erb was on his back
bumper on lap 35. Erb started pressuring Lance heavily at the mid-way point, and
the pair raced each other hard until Erb finally made the pass stick on lap 87.
Erb held on for the $4,000 win, Lance finished 2nd, with Ryan Dauber,
Lance, Jr., and Wes Steidinger rounding out the top 5. Only 7 cars were running
at the checkered flag.
Joe Markle won the Sportsman feature, with Matt Musgrave winning the Hornet
feature. The races were held in honor of 10 time Track Champion Don Bohlander,
who has been stricken with Parkinson’s Disease. Over $14,000 was raised for
Parkinson’s research and will be donated in Bohlanders’ name.
Peoria Speedway will host a regular program next Saturday night featuring Late
Models, Modifieds, Sportsman, Street Stocks, Bombers and Hornets.

Tarheel Tiger Flawless during Southern Regional Racing Series Event at the Mountain
By Chris Tilley (C/T Marketing)
CONTACT: (606) 219-1723 or tilleyracing@hotmail.com
MARYVILLE, TN (April 12, 2008)—The word ‘Flawless’ is used to describe Ray Cook’s performance during the PPM Racing Products Southern Regional Racing Series stop at the Mountain Raceway Park in Maryville, TN on Saturday April 12, 2008.
Cook transferred to the main event through Qualifying, started from the outside pole position and led all 50 laps in route to the win in front of a packed house.
The Brasstown, NC driver collected $3,000 for his fourth career Series victory. Cook’s Grover Racing Engines, MasterSbilt Race Car is sponsored by Fairway Ford, Jacky Jones Automotive, Arvil Cook Property Investments, Youngblood Concrete, Bill Elliott Racing, Hamrick’s of Gaffney, James Cook Construction, PPM Racing Products, A-Plus Moving and Storage, and Engines Inc.
The 2007 Mountain Raceway Champion Bobby Giffin, along with outside polesitter Cook brought the field of 24 to Lynn Palmer’s Green Flag for the start of the 50-Lap main. Cook had the commanding lead into turn one but the caution would wave before the first lap was complete as Mike Hill went around in turn two, collecting Chris Wilson first along with seven other drivers. The red flag was displayed momentarily while track crews scrambled to recover the injured cars.
When the race was then restarted a second time, Cook got the jump from the start and led the field down for the first circuit with East-Tennessee drivers Anthony White, Giffin, Billy Ogle Jr. and Vic Hill in tow.
The yellow flag would once again wave on lap three as Billy Ogle Jr. got sideways and went around in turn one. At this point, Ogle was running fifth, but after spinning sent him to the tail, Tommy Kerr had now moved into that position.
The caution would also come out on the eighth lap for Michael Luna brushing the turn-two wall. Mark Vineyard, who had started in the 12th position, had already moved his way into the sixth position using the outside line to his advantage. Rick Rogers had also tried to pull out from the line and go with Vineyard but couldn’t get his car to stick as well up on the high line.
The caution would come back out again on the 11th circuit for Chris Wilson slowing in turn-two with mechanical woes.
Lapped cars would start to surface for leader Ray Cook on the 20th circuit with Mike Luna going a lap down first, then Cook who had almost tangled with the lapped car of Brett Wyatt on the 22nd circuit while trying to pass, stretched his lead to a half straightaway by the half-way point in the event.
Mark Douglas and Joe Denby would collide in turn two on the 26th lap bringing out the caution again.
Just as Denby collected with Douglas a few laps earlier, he again got collected in turn two, this time with John Gill and 31 circuits officially scored.
The final caution of the night would wave on the 42nd lap as second place runner Anthony White slowed on the front-straight with mechanical problems for the 3-time and defending Advance Auto Parts Thunder Series Champion.
Ray Cook would lead the field back down to the green flag for the remaining eight laps with Giffin, Vic Hill, Kerr and Vineyard the top-five. Cook would cross the line 10-car lengths ahead of Giffin for the win.

Kevin Claycomb Continues Comeback with “Spring 50” Win at Florence Speedway
UNION, KY (April 5, 2008) – What rust? Even though he ran just a couple of races at the end of 2007 many figured that Kevin Claycomb would be a little rusty in his return to the cockpit of a race car, but so far he has shown that he is more than ready to get back to winning something he was accustomed to in his 25 year racing career when he walked away from it in 2004. On Saturday Night at Florence Speedway the 47-year-old Vincennes, IN native captured the $5,000 32nd Annual “Spring 50” win marking his second victory in the three races he has run this year.
Claycomb would take the lead for good on lap 41 when race leader Patrick Sheltra got into a car he was lapping eliminating his chance for the win. Claycomb, who was a close second at the time then picked up the lead and led the remaining nine laps for his second win in the annual event at Florence. His first win came in 1996. Rod Conley of Wheelersburg, OH finished second followed by Cody Mahoney of Madison, IN, Josh Williams of West Harrison, IN and 6-time Florence track champion Steve Landrum of Erlanger, KY.
Claycomb driving for Scott Clippinger Racing based in Evansville, IN started on the pole alongside reigning “Hillbilly 100” champion, Eddie Carrier, Jr. as both drivers earned those spots by winning the first two heat races. Carrier would bolt to the lead at the start of the 50 lap event with Claycomb, Conley, Sheltra and Frank Heckenast, Jr. bargaining for top five spots with one lap scored.
Carrier would explode to a half a straightaway lead on Claycomb in the early going and was already picking up the tail end of the field by the fourth lap when the first caution of the race came out for fast qualifier, John Gill who had spun in turn number two. On the Delaware double file restart the drivers would not get a good lap in when Audie McWilliams, who had moved from 10th to sixth in the running order nailed the backstretch wall ending his night.
On the next restart Carrier would not be able to pull away from Claycomb like he had done in the first four laps. A car on the move was Heckenast, who was making his first ever appearance at Florence was running strong as he was up to third a lap into the second restart of the race.
Jerry Rice, who started eighth then started to make some moves as he challenged Sheltra for fourth by lap seven and then moved past Sheltra into that spot on lap nine, but a lap later Sheltra would return the favor re-passing Rice for fourth.
With ten laps in the scoring column Carrier was still showing the way followed by Claycomb, Heckenast, Sheltra and Rice with Conley and Tim Prince just outside the top five runners.
Rice would suddenly slow with ten scored pulling into the infield ending his race on lap 11. Meanwhile up front Claycomb had taken over the lead from Carrier. The third caution would fly would then fly for top ten runner Terry Hicks who had come to a stop alongside the outside retaining wall coming off of turn four. Heckenast, who still running in third at the time unfortunately clipped Hicks’ car which cause enough damage to eliminate the second generation racer from competition.
On the restart Mike Jewell would have a flat and get into the turn one wall ending his night while running in sixth place. A lap later David Spille would bring out caution number five after coming to a halt in turn number two.
This would then set up a 13 lap green flag period in which Claycomb would still be holding the point as Carrier was off the pace with a flat tire on lap 15. Carrier would drop several positions as he eventually went pit side ending a solid run. At the same time Carrier went out Sheltra, who started fifth roared past Claycomb to take over the lead of the race.
The front running cars of Sheltra and Claycomb were then pulling away from the field as Prince was up to third with Gill making a comeback from a lap four spin residing in the fourth spot. With Sheltra and Claycomb getting into lapped traffic by the 20th lap Prince, Gill and Conley would start to close the distance on them.
Just as the cars took the halfway mark Mike Meyers, who was making his first start at Florence got upside in turn three as Conley and Jesse Lay were involved in the accident. The cars of Meyers and Lay went off the track on the hook as Conley continued on resuming his fifth place spot in the running order.
With 25 laps scored there were now seven cars on the lead lap with Sheltra, a full-time ARCA driver leading the event. Caution number seven would appear as Gill would suffer a right rear flat tire while running in fourth. Gill would slow and head pit side ending his evening.
Sheltra would three wheel his way around the half-mile track holding Claycomb at bay and when Claycomb would stumble a couple of times on the rough and tumble surface Sheltra would build his lead to as many as six car lengths.
The final caution of the race would come out on lap 31 when Prince would flip his car in turn number two. Prince would come out of the incident unscathed, but his car was done for the night as a strong performance. Prince would give up his third place run, allowing Josh Williams and Rod Conley to move up a spot.
Sheltra and Claycomb were putting on quite a race for the lead with 15 circuits remaining with Williams, Conley and the youngster Mahoney in the battle for third. Again Sheltra and Claycomb would run into traffic with both drivers having to negotiate through.
With 40 laps complete Sheltra would enter turn number three and that’s when his troubles would begin. Sheltra would run into the corner a little too hot and run up on the side of Billy Vaughan’s car, Sheltra would immediately slow allowing Claycomb by for the lead.
Sheltra would limp around the track for another lap, but pulled into the infield ending what could have been a trip to victory lane.
Claycomb would then lead the rest of the way going unchallenged in the waning laps. The race for second though came down to the final lap as Conley and Mahoney would fight it out to the checkers with Conley baring edging out Mahoney for runner-up honors. Williams would come home third followed by Landrum.
Completing the top ten were David Spille, Tom Sheets, Joe Ramey, Patrick Sheltra and Billy Vaughan.
Afterwards Claycomb was relieved the race was over and that he was the winner of the race he first won 12 years ago. “I was worried there at the start he (Carrier) was pulling away there, the track was rough with all the rain and I was just looking for a line around the track, the car was real good all race long so it’s good to get a win,” said the former UMP Late Model Champion, who won last Friday Night, March 28 at Paducah, KY for his first win since leaving the sport after the 2004 season.
“The kids got older and they were playing sports and with the business we just didn’t have the time to put into, up until the end of last year when I drove a few races for Scott (car owner Clippinger) at Kentucky Lake, I had been to one race and that was going to Haubstadt one night and watching a sprint car race.” Something else new for Claycomb is having a crew chief, since for all of racing career he drove for his father, Bill. Long-time veteran crew chief Danny Myers is the man turning the wrenches on the #16c race team. “It’s good to have someone like Danny on board with the team, he’s doing a great job, I don’t know how much we’ll be racing this year, I’m just enjoying this right now, I go down there (to Evansville) once a week to check things out, so hopefully we can keep this going in a positive direction,” said Claycomb.
Sheltra, who was getting ready to head for an ARCA practice session the next day was disappointed his night ended when it did. “We got into lapped traffic there, we should have used our head a little more, we had seven or eight laps to go, I think we should have waited a little bit longer to get by them (lapped cars), we started fifth there and the car was little tight at the beginning then it really started to come into it, we’re still learning every time out and we’ll be alright in the future, Sheltra said afterwards.
For Mahoney it was his best finish in his career in a bigger paying race. “We’re real happy with the finish (third), we don’t get to make it over too much at Florence, we’ve got a new motor (Bullock) and a new MasterSbilt and everything is working real well. For a long-time there I thought I could get Conley and I think I got the tires hot and faded back there a little bit so we end up third and he finished second,” Mahoney commented.
Claycomb’s winning entry is sponsored by 5150 Race Trailers/Engler Machine and Tool/Allstar Performance/Hyperco/Sweet Manufacturing and VP Racing Fuels. The MasterSbilt Race Cars ride is powered by a Jay Dickens Racing Engine.
Conley’s second place run came in the Conley Trucking/Draime Racing Engines/Rocket Monte Carlo SS with Mahoney coming home third in the Fox Custom Cabinets and Wilds Restoration sponsored number 4. Williams took home third in the Bicycle Playing Cards/Dargie Racing Engines/Rocket Monte Carlo with Landrum finishing fifth in his Randy’s Towing and Recovery/Dargie Racing Engines/C.J. Rayburn Monte Carlo SS.
