Hugh “Junebug” Rowland Memorial Fast Facts and Tidbits
-This event first appeared on the Ponderosa Speedway racing schedule back in
1999 under then track promoter James King as a tribute to the late Mr. Rowland,
who sold racing parts and was very instrumental in several drivers racing
careers around the Central Kentucky area.
-The inaugural “Junebug” Memorial was contested in 1999 and saw “The Real Deal”
Don O’Neal of Martinsville, IN win the event.
-In 2000, Jay Mobley of Harrodsburg, KY scored what was the biggest Late Model
win of his career at the time when he drove the Yantz Motorsports Rayburn
chassis entry to the “Junebug” Memorial win. Mobley held off Bobby Carrier, Jr.
in the late stages of the race for the win, with that duo followed by Jeff
Coulter, Timmy Yeager, and Brad Neat at the drop of the checkered flag.
-Dustin Neat of Dunnville, KY would scored the biggest win of his career when he
hit paydirt in the 2001 “Junebug” Memorial race behind the wheel of the Greg
Neat owned entry. Greg Neat is the father of the former Casey County Rebels
basketball and baseball high school standout.
-The event was not held in 2002 as then promoter James King would close the
gates of the Ponderosa Speedway about midway through that 2002 race season.
-The “Junebug” Memorial would return to the Ponderosa Speedway schedule in late
2003 after Jerry Denson took the promotional reigns at “The Pond” after the
untimely death then promoter John Bradshaw. Second-generation driver Mike Marlar
of Winfield, TN was the winner of the 2003 race by driving to the checkered flag
first ahead of Scott James, Mike Jewell, Darrell Lanigan, and Jesse Lay.
-The 2004 race was scheduled to be sanctioned by the O’Reilly NARA Battle of the
Bluegrass DirtCar Series event, but the sanction was pulled from the race after
track officials informed series officials that they may not be able to pay the
full purse for the race. The event was ran as a $1,500 to win non-sanctioned
race and saw Mike Marlar of Winfield, TN follow-up his 2003 win by claiming his
second straight “Junebug” win over Johnny Wheeler, Shannon Thornsberry, Bobby
Carrier, Jr., and Anthony Ferguson.
-Bryan Barber of Buffalo, KY would claim the biggest win of his career by
claiming the O’Reilly NARA Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series sanctioned 6th
Annual “Junebug” Memorial race. The third-generation racer would hold off Steve
Hillard for the win, as a large last lap crash in turn four coming to the
checkered flag would suffle the final running order drastically, with third
through fifth being credited to Mike Marlar, Eddie Carrier, Jr., and Wayne
Chinn.
-Joey Daniel would pick up his first-ever O’Reilly NARA Battle of the Bluegrass
DirtCar Series victory by winning the 2006 “Junebug” event over Chris Combs,
Justin Rattliff, Aaron Hatton, and Tim Tungate. The race was a special Saturday
night event that was the track’s first Saturday night special event in over five
and one-half years.
-Brad Neat of Dunnville, KY would take his first “BoB Late Model” victory of
2007 and become the seventh different winner of the “Junebug” as the likable
Casey County native was enjoying an off evening from action with the Lucas Oil
Late Model Dirt Series to pick up the win at the track where he first competed
at back in the mid 90’s in the Pure Street and Bomber divisions. Neat’s win
would come over the likes of Mike Marlar, Victor Lee, David Webb, and Jason
Keltner. Brad and brother Dustin are now both winners of this race, as older
sibling Dustin won the event back in 2001.

Junction City, KY-April 25, 2008- On an evening that saw exciting finishes and even a tie, Brad Neat of Dunnville, KY would pick up the $1,500 to win special for the Good Neighbor Pharmacy Super Late Models on Friday evening at Ponderosa Speedway. Other feature winners included P.J. Feistritzer of Danville, KY in Kentucky National Guard Pro Late Models, Benji Lee of St. Joe, KY in Hardee’s Modifieds, and Bartley Grant of Berea, KY and Logan Whitis of Hustonville, KY finished in a dead heat to tie for the SkyTower Power Race Engines Sportsman feature win.
The Good Neighbor Pharmacy Super Late Model feature event would see a three-wide battle for the lead before Victor Lee would claim the top spot, followed by Bobby Wolter, Jr., Brad Neat, Michael Chilton, and Dustin Neat. Caution would wave on lap 2 when Matthew Rigdon spun his mount exiting turn two. The restart would also see the second and final caution of the race wave when the leaders stacked up on the restart, with fifth place Dustin Neat receiving the bad end of the incident when his machine spun and received damage, ending his night. The restart would have Lee out front, with Wolter, Jr. and Brad Neat battling for second, while Chilton would get some heat from Aaron Hatton for fourth. Wolter, Jr. would roll up on Lee and pass him for the lead off of turn four on lap 5, only to lose the spot back to Lee one circuit later. Neat would scoot past Wolter, Jr. for second on lap 7, while Chilton and Hatton continued to battle door-to-door for fourth, with Hatton taking the four spot on lap 10. By the halfway mark on lap 15, Lee and Neat and put some distance back to now third place Hatton, with Chilton taking fourth from Wolter, Jr. on lap 19. The lead duo of Lee and Neat saw their battle heat up further when the pair started to encounter heavy traffic on lap 23. The leaders would battle wheel-to-wheel in the heavy traffic as they received the two lap to go signal on lap 28. Turn two would be the turning point for the lead on lap 29, as Neat got by Lee on the outside in the traffic as the field roared to the white flag. Neat would keep Lee and bay and take the hotly contested victory in the Kentucky Proud/Begley Properties/NWN Distributing/Tarter Gate/Tarter and Roberts Insurance/Tri-County Wood/ Mosley NAPA Auto Parts/AFCO Racing Products sponsored #41 MasterSbilt Race Cars, Cornett Race Engines powered entry. Lee would finish second, followed by Hatton, Chilton, and Dustin Linville. Jason Keltner would head up the second five at the finish, followed by Valvoline Six-Pack Hard Charger award winner Jordan Bland, Mike Jewell, Chris Combs, and Wolter, Jr. Hatton was top qualifier among 19 entries in Wayne Bowen Racing Supply time trials with a lap of 13.458 seconds. Brad Neat won the dash, while heat race wins fell to Jake Henry and Dustin Linville.
The Kentucky National Guard Pro Late Model feature event saw 15 year old Dylan Preston attempting to win his first-ever Pro Late Model main event and he would stave off the challenges of P.J. Feistritzer over the first 19 laps of the event, until Feistritzer would slidejob Preston off of turn two on the final lap, only to have Preston pull back alongside Feistritzer in turn three. The duo would be door-to-door coming to the checkered flag off of turn four, with the pair making contact just short and the checkered flag, with Feistritzer coming home first, while Preston spun into the outside retaining wall just past the flagstand. Feistritzer’s win was his third straight on the season and came aboard the Big Daddy’s Auto Sales/Self-Service Storage sponsored #88 C.J. Rayburn Race Car. Preston would finish second and also claim the Valvoline Six-Pack Hard Charger award. Zane Morgan, Gary Yeager, and Todd Coffman would complete the top five. Todd Coffman would be the Wayne Bowen Racing Supply top qualifier in time trials with a 14.624 second lap among eight entries and would also score the heat race victory.
The Hardee’s Modified main event would see an entertaining battle throughout the final 12 laps of the open-wheel feature as Josh Lucas and Benji Lee would battle side-by-side all the way around the track, and at times, just inches apart. Lucas would lead the entire distance, only to see Lee able to work beneath last week’s feature winner exiting turn four with just three circuits remaining. Lucas would continue to nip at Lee’s heels, but would settle for second on this evening as Lee would put the Thompson Heat and Air/ B&B Motorsports/St. Joe Garage sponsored #03 Bandit Race Cars, Dale Meers Race Engines powered machine in victory lane. Lucas would take runner-up honors, with Victor Lee claiming third, J.T. Ayers scoring fourth, and Kelly Warren collecting fifth. The remainder of the top ten would be Russ Gabbert, Elliott Despain, Kevin Nesselhauf, Valvoline Six-Pack Hard Charger Jeff Johnson, and Rocky Wilson. In Wayne Bowen Racing Supply time trials, Benji Lee would be the top qualifier among 15 entries at 15.066 seconds. Lucas would score the dash win, while Gabbert grabbed the heat win.
The SkyTower Power Race Engines Sportsman feature event would see a late race caution with 6 laps remaining tighten up the front of the field and Logan Whitis would attempt to keep Bartley Grant at bay, with the pair taking the white flag side-by-side for the lead. The final lap would a true race fan’s delight as the pair would go at all the way down the backchute and enter turn three side-by-side and exit turn four still in that position, with pair rubbing some paint and taking the checkered flag in a dead heat, with track promoter Larry Yantz declaring both drivers the winner of the race. Grant’s #1 entry is sponsored by Cookie Monster Power Plants/Double J Cylinder Heads/D&H Heating and Air/Smokehouse Grill/Cox Wrecker Service/Copper Creek Welding, while Whitis’s #12w machine is sponsored by Back and Body Chiropractic Center/B&K Tire Center/Beldon’s Concrete/Whited’s Auto Sales/Polly’s II Shoe Outlet/Chiffton Steel Company/Atwood Brothers Detail and Tint Shop/Charlie’s Barber Shop. Junction City, KY- April 18, 2008- Michael Chilton of Salvisa, KY would pick up his first Good Neighbor Pharmacy Super Late Model feature victory of the 2008 season on Friday night at Ponderosa Speedway. Other feature winners were P.J. Feistritzer of Danville, KY making it two straight wins in the Kentucky National Guard Pro Late Model division, with Josh Lucas of Bardstown, KY winning the Hardee’s Modified main event, while Gerald Haynes, Jr. scored the win in the SkyTower Power Race Engines Sportsman feature.
The start of the Good Neighbor Pharmacy Super Late Model feature would see Michael Chilton take the lead off of turn two from Aaron Hatton, with Bobby Wolter, Jr., Dustin Neat, and Dustin Linville in pursuit. Chilton would open a slight lead, while Hatton and Wolter, Jr. battled for second, with Neat and Linville battling for fourth. Neat would take fourth spot from Linville on lap 4, while Chilton began to already work slower traffic. Meanwhile, the driver on the move was P.J. Feistritzer, who drove for C.J. Rayburn, making his way from his 10th starting position and passing Neat for fifth on lap 8. Caution would slow the pace on lap 10 when Matthew Rigdon would spin in turn two. The restart would also be called back when 9th place running Brandon Fouts spun his mount in turn three on the restart, while Jeff Watson would pull pitside with a flat right rear tire during the caution, bolt on fresh rubber, and return to action. Matthew Rigdon would again spin on the third attempted lap 10 restart and would roll pitside for the evening. Back underway, Chilton would get some heat from Hatton, with Wolter, Jr. all over Hatton for second, with Feistritzer going to fourth past Linville on lap 12. With Chilton methodically pulling away from the pack, Hatton and Wolter, Jr. resumed their spirited battle for second, with Feistritzer making it a three-way battle by lap 15. The final caution of the race flew on lap 16 when Dwight Embree contacted the turn two wall, ending his night. The restart would see Neat and Linville slide past Feistritzer off of turn two, while Wolter, Jr. and Hatton turned the wick up on their battle for second. With Chilton again inching away from the field, Hatton and Wolter, Jr. would battle door-to-door for second, before Wolter, Jr. would slip by for the runner-up slot on lap 23. But it would be the “Wild Child’s” night as he would park the Kenneth Harlow owned, Caldwell Body Shop/A&A Mechanical/Cliffside Farms/Budda Bert Transmissions sponsored #16 C.J. Rayburn Race Cars, Butch Smith Race Engines entry in victory lane. Wolter, Jr. and Hatton would take second and third, with Neat and Linville completing the top five. Seventeen entries saw Chilton the top qualifier during Wayne Bowen Racing Supply time trials at 13.036 seconds. Hatton won the dash, while Fouts won the heat.
The Kentucky National Guard Pro Late Model feature would see P.J. Feistritzer take the lead from his father Paul Feistritzer on lap 13 and hold off the Pro Late Model feature Valvoline Six-Pack Hard Charger Todd Coffman to lay claim to his second straight Kentucky National Guard Pro Late Model feature win aboard his Big Daddy’s Auto Sales/ Self-Service Storage sponsored #88 C.J. Rayburn Race Cars machine. Feistritzer was top qualifier among eleven entries in Wayne Bowen Racing Supply time trials at 14.280 seconds. Paul Feistritzer would win the dash, with Hardin claiming the heat win.
Josh Lucas would survive six caution flags and a late race charge from Kelly Warren and Timmy York to claim the Hardee’s Modified feature victory. Lucas led all 20 laps and win a spirited battle over the final five laps, as Warren and York worked different lines behind Lucas in an entertaining battle for second, that saw York take second from Warren in the late going and pressure Lucas for win and the duo would be side-by-side exiting turn four coming to the checkered flag, with Lucas grabbing the victory by one-half car length in the Gerald and Rita Lucas owned, Lucas Oil Products/The Car Pool/Family Chiropractic/ Boone’s Plumbing/Riggs Electric/On Time Courier/D&R Oil/K&N Performance Engineering sponsored #78 Lightning Chassis, Dale Meers Race Engines powered mount. Mike Marlar Masters Chris Estes/Brad Pena Memorial at Ponderosa Speedway
Junction City, KY-April 5, 2008- On an evening that saw recent rains from Mother Nature produce less than desirable track conditions, Mike Marlar of Winfield, TN would etch his name as the inaugural winner of the Chris Estes/Brad Pena Memorial for Good Neighbor Pharmacy Super Late Models at Ponderosa Speedway. Other feature winners included P.J. Feistritzer of Danville, KY in Kentucky National Guard Pro Late Models, Skylar Marlar of Winfield, TN in Hardee’s Modifieds, and Bartley Grant of Berea, KY in SkyTower Power Race Engines Sportsman.
Victor Lee would take the lead at the drop of the green flag on the Super Late Model main event, with Mike Marlar, Brad Neat, Michael Chilton, and Jason Keltner in pursuit. The first of four lap 3 cautions would fly when Bobby Carrier, Jr. slowed on the track with a busted nosepiece and the restart would be called back after Dustin Linville made contact with the restart cone. The next attempted restart would see leader Lee suffer a flat left rear tire and spin exiting turn two, collecting Brad Neat, Dustin Neat, and Rohn Moon, while the fourth attempted restart would not take when Jamie Ferguson slowed in turn two after slight contact with the retaining wall. Once back underway, Marlar was now at the point, while Chilton would take second from Brad Neat on lap 4, and Keltner taking third one trip later.. Linville would be the cause for the next caution on lap 6 after slowing on the backchute with right front suspension damage. The restart would only see one more lap completed when Aaron Hatton would flip his mount in turn four, bringing out a red flag, with Hatton uninjured from the melee. This restart would still see Marlar with the lead, when second place Chilton would spin in turn two with a flat left rear tire and Brad Neat would also be involved as well. When action resumed on lap 8, Keltner would now be second, followed by Rohn Moon, Duane Chamberlain, and Bobby Wolter, Jr. Shannon Thornsberry would be the cause on the next caution on lap 10 when he spun in turn four. The restart would see Moon take second from Keltner on lap 11, only to see another caution on lap 12 when Dustin Neat slowed exiting turn two and ended up tangled with Jeff Shackleford and Arnie Fields. At this point, due to the lateness of the hour and track conditions, the event was trimmed to 30 laps. The field would get three clean laps in with Shon Flanery going to fifth on lap 14, but Joey Daniel would slow on lap 15 to bring another caution period. At the halfway point, Marlar was still the leader, followed by Moon, Chamberlain, Keltner, and Flanery. Flanery would take fourth one circuit later, while Chilton was charging back through the field and would sneak past Keltner for fifth on lap 19. Marlar and Moon continued to pull away from the field and worked lapped traffic for the only time in the race on lap 22, with Moon closing right up on Marlar in turn three on lap 24. But another caution would call off the fight when Chilton would suffer another flat left rear tire and stop on the track on lap 25. The restart would see Chamberlain fire past Moon for second, with Keltner also going around Flanery for fourth. Lap 27 would see the final yellow bunting of the race when third place Moon spun in turn two with a flat left rear tire, while second place Chamberlain also pulled pitside with a flat left rear tire. The final circuits would be caution free and Marlar would go to victory lane aboard the Estes Automotive owned, Estes Automotive, PBM Performance Products, Dyer’s Top Rods, VP Racing Fuels sponsored #78 C.J. Rayburn Race Cars, Estes Race Engines machine. Keltner, Flanery, Chilton, and Moon would complete the top five. In Wayne Bowen Racing Supply time trials, Victor Lee would establish a new Super Late Model track record with a lap of 12.744 seconds among the 32 entries on hand. Lee would also pick up $200 in the Dyer’s Top Rods Dash, while heat wins were captured by Flanery, David Webb, and Moon. Hatton would win the B-Main and Larry Gray was the track provisional for the event.

Rayburn Race Cars mount. P.J.’s father, Paul Feistritzer would take runner-up honors, followed by Todd Coffman, Dylan Preston, and Brian Smith. The remainder of the finishing order would be Jeff Rowland, Scott Brewer, Zane Morgan, and Peydon Pelphrey. P.J. Feistritzer would be the top qualifier among 13 entries in the class and would also claim the heat win as well, while Brian Smith would be the Valvoline Six-Pack Hard Charger.
The Hardee’s Modified main event would see polesitter Skylar Marlar follow older brother Mike’s tire tracks to victory lane as Marlar would lead the entire distance in the open-wheel division’s feature event driving the Marlar Auto Mart, Huddle House, Wayne Bowen Racing Supply, RaceCarbs, Doors-N-More, El Rey’s Mexican Restaurant, Precision Automotive, HandyMan sponsored #257 machine to the $1,000 payday.
