HUGHES NETS THIRD O’REILLY USMTS SOUTHERN SERIES WIN AT PIKE COUNTY SPEEDWAY

MAGNOLIA, Miss. (May 10) — On Friday night, O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series points leader Jason Hughes picked up his second win of the season and let it be known that he is the man to beat this year.

Just in case some were not listening, he repeated his message loud and clear on Saturday night as he picked up his third win in seven starts as the O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series visited the Pike County Speedway in Magnolia, Miss., for the inaugural I-55 Modified Challenge.

Scott Green of Derby, Kan., set the tone early on with an impressive seventh-to-first run in his heat race to earn the AFCO Pole Award. The 2007 Rookies Rockin’ Sports Bar Rookie of the Year on the O’Reilly USMTS National Tour then redrew the outside of row 2 for the 30-lap Holley “A” Main on the exquisite 3/8-mile high-banked clay oval.

Veteran Louisiana racers Jerry Cassano and three-time O’Reilly SUPR Late Model Series champion David Ashley sat on the front row for the main event, but Green swiped the top spot from Cassano with just one lap in the books. Green paced the next nine laps before giving way to Tommy Weder Jr., who relinquished the point eight laps later to Hughes, who started seventh.

From there it was all Hughes as the Westville, Okla., ace led a 1-2-3 sweep by drivers in Hughes Chassis Modifieds. Weder hung on for second, followed by Green, Cassano and Morgan Bagley. Shane Hebert, Dereck Ramirez, Steve Holzkamper, Brandon Kenny and Bryan Rowland rounded out the top-10 finishers.

The win was worth $2,000 to Hughes as he extended his points lead over Holzkamper (688 to 616 points) after completion of the seventh of 25 O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series events scheduled for the 2008 racing season. Weder jumped up one spot to third with 554 points, followed by John O. Whittington (499), Paul White (497), Kyle Pleasant (491), Hebert (481), David Mitchell (464), Rowland (459) and Bagley (445).

The rugged road warriors of the O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series wrap up their five-week spring swing next weekend with a doubleheader in the Lone Star State. On Friday, May 16, the 105 Speedway in Cleveland, Texas, plays host to the hottest modified drivers in the South, while Houston Raceway Park in Baytown, Texas, will be the locale on Saturday, May 17.

HUGHES PADS POINTS LEAD WITH O’REILLY USMTS SOUTHERN SERIES VICTORY AT SABINE SPEEDWAY

MANY, La. (May 9) — Jason Hughes sent a loud and clear message Friday night that he is the man to beat in 2008 on the O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series trail.

The chassis builder from Westville, Okla., took just 12 laps to take the lead from his fifth-row starting spot, working his way around the likes of Morgan Bagley, B.J. Robinson, Dustin Hyde, Paul White, Steve Holzkamper and polesitter Tommy Weder Jr. on his way to the front.

Hughes pocketed the $2,000 top prize for his second O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series triumph of the season as he padded his points lead with his fourth top-5 finish in six starts. But the truly bad news for his competition is that Friday night's 10th-place starting spot was Hughes' best so far this season — his previous five starts were 12th twice, 15th twice and 19th.

Steve Holzkamper of Gentry, Ark., claimed the runner-up position in the Holley "A" Main to keep the points damage to a minimum and remain runner-up to Hughes in the current rankings. Weder held on for third, with Paul White taking fourth and Dustin Duncan Memorial “Just Say Yes” Rookie of the Year points leader John O. Whittington coming from 23rd on the 24-car starting grid to score a fifth-place paycheck.

Dereck Ramirez, Chris Henigan, Bryan Rowland, Lee Patton and 22nd-starting Jeremy Ross rounded out the top-10 finishers.

While Hughes expanded his points lead over Holzkamper to 48 points (579 to 531), Whittington's strong run kept him in third with a two-point cushion over Weder (454 to 452). Kyle Pleasant is fifth with 429 markers, followed by David Mitchell (406), Shane Hebert (391), Dustin Hyde (379) and Rowland (375).

The O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series wraps up the tripleheader weekend on Saturday with an inaugural event at the Pike County Speedway in Magnolia, Miss.

MITCHELL MASTERS RAIN-DELAYED O’REILLY USMTS SOUTHERN SERIES EVENT AT CHAMPION PARK SPEEDWAY

MINDEN, La. (May 8) — With 55 top-flight Modified drivers on hand, rain accompanied by wind and lightning brought an early end to the O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series event on Friday, April 25, at the Champion Park Speedway in Minden, La. After completion of six O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series heat races and a pair of Limited Modified heats, the skies opened up as Mother Nature crashed the party around 9 p.m. at the quarter-mile clay oval.

With three Real Racing Wheels “B” Mains and the Holley “A” Main, plus the remainder of the full Limited Modified show yet to go, the event was postponed to today (Thursday, May 8).

The extra 13-day wait didn't bother David Mitchell, however, as he scored his first USMTS-sanctioned victory after chasing the checkered flag for nearly three years on both the O’Reilly USMTS National Tour and O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series campaigns.

The Ashdown, Ark., racer started the Holley “A” Main from the eighth spot, but with a little help it took only two laps for him to secure the top spot which he would never relinquish.

The yellow flag waved after the first lap was completed as Michael Robertson and Erik Scott got tangled up. One lap later, caution waved again as Wes Armstrong made contact with leader John O. Whittington. The pair collected Tracy Denby and sent the top-3 runners to the tail of the field for the next restart.

Mitchell paced the field for the restart and fended off early challenges from Rodney Sanders. Midway through the race, Tommy Weder Jr. had stormed his way from 14th on the 24-car starting grid to take over second place and begin pressuring Mitchell for the lead.

On lap 23 Jason Hughes got together with Jamie Burford to bring out a caution flag, sending both drivers out of the top-5 and to the rear of the field with 12 laps to go in the 35-lapper. On the restart, Weder suffered a flat tire to end his run and gave Mitchell a little more breathing room.

Mitchell hung on for the next dozen orbits to claim the $2,000 top prize, with Shane Hebert notching his career-best USMTS finish by taking the runner-up spot after starting 17th. Sanders finished third, followed by Robertson and veteran Paul White, who collected the KSE Racing Products Hard Charger Award after racing from 22nd to 5th in the main event.

Shadowing White's run through the pack, Steve Holzkamper came from 23rd to finish 6th, while Whittington clawed his way back to a seventh-place finish after the melee on lap 2. Dereck Ramirez was eighth, Bryan Rowland grabbed ninth and Elias Anderson rounded out the top-10 finishers.

Hughes continues atop the O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series rankings, 467 to 436 over Holzkamper with five races in the books and twenty shows to go. Whittington is third with 370 points and also leads the Dustin Duncan Memorial “Just Say Yes” Rookie of the Year points. Weder is fourth (360), followed by Kyle Pleasant (360), Mitchell (346), White (341), Hebert (339), Randy Timms (336) and Robertson (319).

The O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series heads for Sabine Speedway in Many, La., on Friday night, then wraps up the tripleheader weekend on Saturday with an inaugural event at the Pike County Speedway in Magnolia, Miss.

WHITE WALLOPS O’REILLY USMTS SOUTHERN SERIES, LEADS PODIUM SWEEP BY LOCALS AT COWTOWN SPEEDWAY

KENNEDALE, Texas (May 3) — “This is our house,” exclaimed George White in victory lane Saturday night at the Cowtown Speedway in Kennedale, Texas. “Ain't nobody taking our money home.”

White, from Fort Worth, led an impressive showing by the local contingent as Cowtown Speedway drivers finished 1-2-3 in the main event as the O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series made their debut at the lightning-fast high-banked quarter-mile oval. Bryan Sugg of Grand Prairie claimed the runner-up spot in the 40-lap Holley “A” Main, while Erving's Glenn Leuschner grabbed third.

The win over the 56 entries Saturday night was worth $2,000 to White.

The first 26 laps of the night, however, belonged to polesitter Eddie Martin of Stilwell, Okla., before a flat tire while leading ended his hopes of a win.

O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series points leader Jason Hughes of Westville, Okla., climbed from 12th to fourth in the main event, but even a late-race caution was not enough to help the crafty veteran find a way around the trio of home turf defenders.

Steve Holzkamper of Gentry, Ark., finished fifth behind Hughes, with Chase Allen, Bobby Malchus, Alan Sharpensteen, Troy Taylor Jr. and Steven Whiteaker Jr. rounding out the top-10 finishers. Malchus, who piloted a second car from the Dunn Motorsports stable, started 19th on the 24-car grid and passed 12 competitors to earn the KSE Racing Products Hard Charger Award.

Hughes continues atop the O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series points standings with a 47-point cushion (402 to 355) over Holzkamper. Tommy Weder Jr. is third with 302 points, followed by John O. Whittington (292), Randy Timms (291), Kyle Pleasant (287), Morgan Bagley (256), Brandon Kenny (248), Dustin Hyde (247) and Derick Grigsby (245).

UP NEXT: A tripleheader is less than a week away as the O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series travels to two tracks in Louisiana and one in Mississippi next Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 8-10.

On Thursday, drivers and fans will return to the Champion Park Speedway in Minden, La., for some unfinished business. Rained out after heat races were completed on April 25, three Real Racing Wheels “B” Mains and the Holley “A” Main will be completed, with a full program of Limited Modifieds and Factory Stock/Cruisers on the racing card. On Friday, the O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series invades the Sabine Speedway in Many, La., followed by the inaugural USMTS event at the Pike County Speedway in Magnolia, Miss., on Saturday.

HUGHES NIPS HOLZKAMPER FOR O’REILLY USMTS SOUTHERN SERIES VICTORY IN ARDMORE

ARDMORE, Okla. (May 2) — Points leader Jason Hughes of Westville, Okla., picked up his first O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series victory of the season Friday as 56 top-flight Modified teams duked it out in the inaugural USMTS event at Ronny Gould's Lake Country Speedway in Ardmore, Okla.

Hughes has been prolific in passing other cars this season, but had not been able to close the deal until Friday night. He passed 11 competitors to bring his total to 35 drivers passed in three main events this season, but it was almost just 10 cars passed on Friday night.

Jamie Burford of Keatchie, La., had the luck of the draw Friday night. He drew the outside of the front row for the first heat race (which he won), his number was drawn as the winner of a free American Racer racing tire and he drew the pole position for the 35-lap Holley "A" Main.

Burford led the first two laps of the feature race before giving way to fifth-starting Rodney Sanders. The 18-year-old high school senior from Happy, Texas, pulled out to a 10 car-length advantage over the next seven laps, but the tricky fourth turn bit Sanders on lap 9 as he spun to bring out the caution flag.

With Sanders tagging the rear of the field, Burford led the pack to the restart with Hughes, Paul White, Randy Timms and Steve Holzkamper giving chase. Burford's maintained a slight advantage for the next few laps before Hughes closed up on his rear bumper on lap 15 as the pair crossed beneath the flagstand side by side.

While drivers jockeyed for positions throughout the field, Hughes kept the heat on Burford. Hughes slipped underneath the leader on lap 19, but Burford returned the favor in the next corner. The pair continued their two-car battle for the next eight laps while Holzkamper began to close the gap.

After completing the 27th lap, Hughes found an opening on the low side of Burford in turn 1 but the two made contact exiting turn 2 with Hughes' tail bouncing over the hood of Burford's machine. The tussle between Hughes and Burford opened the door for Holzkamper as he scooted by on the inside to grab the top spot.

With five laps to go, the seventh yellow flag of the race waved with Holzkamper up front, Hughes second, Brandon Kenny third, White holding down fourth and Tommy Weder Jr. up to fifth after first-lap spin that put him to the rear of the 24-car field.

With two laps to go, Hughes moved to the outside of Holzkamper and the two veterans raced door-to-door for the rest of the race. Hughes edged ahead of Holzkamper to lead at the white flag, then executed a perfect final lap to pull off the victory and collect the $2,000 top prize.

Holzkamper, who captured the April 19 event at the Gator Motorplex in Willis, Texas, finished second, while Weder climbed to a third-place finish at the checkers. Kenny claimed fourth while White quietly scored a top-5 finish. Sixth through 10th were John O. Whittington, AFCO Pole Award winner Johnny Scott, Travis Penrod, Cody Smith and Kyle Pleasant.

With the win, Hughes extended his O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series points lead to 39 over Holzkamper (307 to 268). Weder jumped up to third in the standings with 257 points, while Pleasant is fourth (233) and Whittington fifth (232). Randy Timms came into the event second in points and had a top-5 run going in the main event before a broken suspension part side-lined his Childhelp-sponsored machine with a 23rd-place finish. Timms dropped to sixth in points with 227, followed by Morgan Bagley (211), Dustin Hyde (202), Kenny (196) and Smith (195).

Bo Rawdon's Cowtown Speedway in Kennedale, Texas, is arguably the most popular dirt track for Modified racing in the Lone Star State, and will find the O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series chewing up the clay on Saturday night. The show gets underway with pit gates opening at 4 p.m. and grandstands open for general admission seating starting at 5 p.m. Hot laps are at 6:30 and the first green flag waves at 7 p.m.

Cowtown Speedway is a quarter-mile high-banked clay oval located off of I-20 at Exit 442-A, then 1.7 miles southeast on Mansfield Hwy., then 1.4 miles southwest on New Hope Rd.  Dwarf Cars, Limited Modifieds, Street Stocks and Bombers will also be running Saturday night. O’REILLY USMTS SOUTHERN SERIES EVENT AT CHAMPION PARK SPEEDWAY SHORTENED BY RAIN, TO BE COMPLETED MAY 8

MINDEN, La. (April 25) — With 55 top-flight Modified drivers on hand, rain accompanied by wind and lightning brought an early end to the O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series event on Friday, April 25, at the Champion Park Speedway in Minden, La.

After completion of six O’Reilly USMTS Southern Series heat races and a pair of Limited Modified heats, the skies opened up as Mother Nature crashed the party around 9 p.m. at the quarter-mile clay oval.

With three Real Racing Wheels “B” Mains and the Holley “A” Main, plus the remainder of the full Limited Modified show yet to go, the event has been postponed to Thursday, May 8.

This will make for a three-night swing May 8-10 as the rugged USMTS road warriors will be at the Sabine Speedway in Many, La., on Friday, May 9, and the Pike County Speedway in Magnolia, Miss., on Saturday, May 10.

Rain checks will be honored for the make-up show at Champion Park Speedway. Any drivers not at Friday's rain-shortened event are welcome to join in the fun on Thursday, May 8, and attempt to qualify through the Real Racing Wheels “B” Mains for one of the remaining 11 spots in the main event.

The race for Saturday, April 26, at the Thunder Valley Speedway is still on as scheduled.

Thunder Valley Speedway is another racy quarter-mile oval that has been witness to everything from Hav-A-Tampa Late Model shows to World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series races, but will host the USMTS Modifieds for the first time Saturday night. Take U.S. Hwy. 165 to Glenmora and turn west on Hwy. 113. Follow past the intersection of Hwy. 112 at the crossroads community of Union Hill and the track will be ahead on the right.

Race time in “The Valley” is 7:00 p.m., with Limited Modifieds and Street Stocks as the support classes.
