Family reunion
follows Hogan’s Memorial win
VINTON, Iowa
(July 11) – For a fourth time, a Hogan family reunion was held in and all
around victory lane.
Scott Hogan won
Sunday’s Hogan Memorial IMCA Modified feature at Benton County Speedway. His
name is already on the mid-season championship event plaque for checkered
flag runs in 1995, 2005 and 2006 and as was the case with his three previous
wins, the hometown driver was joined by dozens of family members and friends
in the post-race celebration.
“Winning this
race the first time was the best of the four but it never gets old. Not at
all,” Hogan said after the last of the victory lane pictures were taken.
“This is always one of the biggest races for me to win. It means a lot to
me.”
The event is
held in memory of Hogan’s parents Dick and Janet. Along with the winner’s
$1,250 share of the feature purse, he earned another $1,400 in lap money,
plus a $250 bonus for leading the race when the 40-lapper was stopped for a
mandatory caution at halfway, making for a $2,900 payday.
Richie Gustin
Jr. did time up front and chased Hogan most of the night, running with a
broken left front tie rod that had him three-wheeling around the track much
of the second half of the 16th annual contest.
After crossing
the stripe virtually side by side at the end of the 31st lap,
Gustin fell back a couple car lengths and brought out the final caution
after slowing to a stop on the front stretch on lap 35.
Tim Murty took
up the challenge from that point but couldn’t make up the distance and had
to settle for second. Troy Cordes, Jay Schmidt and Jerry Luloff completed
the top five.
Cordes moved up
18 spots from his starting position, but the $450 in hard charger money went
to defending race winner and sixth place runner Michael Long, a plus 20
after taking a provisional and starting last in the field.
Tim Stevens
drew the pole start and led the first three circuits before giving way to
Gustin.
The convincing
winner of the season opening Frostbuster special at Vinton in April, Gustin
moved to the front on lap four with Hogan close behind. The front pair
pulled away from the rest of the pack before Hogan edged ahead as lap 12 was
scored.
Lapped traffic
came into play and Hogan got some breathing room when Gustin was slowed by a
backrunner before the midway break.
Gustin
continued his pursuit when the race resumed, getting the lead back by the
width of his bumper on lap 31.
He’d be unable
to maintain the pace, however, and the rest of the race belonged to Hogan.
Murty had taken over third after back-to-back cautions on lap 26; after
Gustin exited, Cordes was settled into third and Long was briefly in fourth
before giving way to Schmidt and Luloff.
Schmidt had
started 14th, Luloff seventh.
Gustin pocketed
an additional $50 for each of the nine laps he was scored in front. Stevens,
who exited early with mechanical problems, got $150 in lap money.
Also winning
feature events were Curt Hilmer in the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods,
Damon Murty in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, Jacob Keiser in the IMCA Sunoco
Hobby Stocks and Brad Chandler in the Mach-1 Sport Compacts.

Benton County Speedway hosts Hogan Memorial
on Sunday
VINTON, Iowa (July 5) – The winner of the
Hogan Memorial can more than double their money with a long run at the front of
the IMCA Modified feature field this Sunday, July 11 at Benton County Speedway.
The headline event pays $1,250 to win and
another $50 for each of the 40 laps led, plus another $250 to the leader at
midway, making for a potential payoff of $3,500. The winner will be added to the
ballot for the 2011 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational.
National, ButlerBuilt North Central Region
and Allstar Performance State points will be awarded. A mandatory caution will
be thrown for a five minute break midway through the feature, with all cars
stopping on the frontstretch.
The winner also goes home with a Hoosier
race tire and all feature qualifiers will be entered in a drawing for a barrel
of methanol from Fauser Oil. A minimum of $110, including sponsor money, will be
paid to make the feature. Robison Trucking and the Ron-Da-Voo Lounge will give a
$450 hard charger award.
IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, IMCA Sunoco Hobby
Stocks, Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods and Mach-1 Sport Compacts will vie for
all applicable IMCA points.
The Ron-Da-Voo will also give $125 hard
charger awards in the Stock Car and Northern SportMod mains.
There is no entry fee for any class.
Pit gates and the grandstand at Vinton open
at 4 p.m., with hot laps at 5:30 p.m. and racing to follow. Grandstand admission
is $10 for adults and $4 for kids 6-13, with five and under admitted free. Pit
passes are $20.
More information about the Hogan Memorial
is available by calling 319 404-7177.

BSB Manufacturing expands 2010 program
with awards for fifth IMCA Modified series
WELLINGTON, Kan. (June 3) – A fifth
series for Modifieds has been added to BSB Manufacturing’s IMCA award program.
Drivers competing in the JR Motorsports
Hawkeye Dirt Tour vie for $50 product certificates to be given by the
Wellington, Kan., manufacturer and second-year IMCA sponsor.
Fifth place finishers at all features in
the EQ Cylinder Heads Wild West Tour, the Larry Shaw Racing Blood, Sweat and
Tears Series, the World Products Empire State Series and the Big Dog Dakota
Classic Tour, and at 30 designated specials for sanctioned Modifieds receive
certificates of the same value.
The champion of the Deery Brothers Summer
Series earns a $250 product certificate and a 30 percent discount on all
purchases for the 2011 race season. The runner-up gets a $200 product
certificate and 20 percent discount, and the third place driver in points gets
a $150 certificate.
Certificates for $50 will also be given
to fifth place finishers at each of the 16 events in the IMCA Late Model tour.
In addition to bird cages, BSB makes rear
end components, sells complete shock packages, rebuilds and revalves shocks,
and retails high performance parts and firesuits.
Information about BSB
products is available by calling 620 326-3152 and at the
www.bsb-mfg.com
website.
"The BSB program was very successful last
year in targeting a large number of Modified and Late Model drivers and they
wanted to continue that support in 2010,” IMCA Marketing Director Kevin Yoder
said. “Certificates will be distributed in a timely manner following each
event in both divisions."

Schedule changes made for Sept. 6-11 IMCA
Speedway Motors Super Nationals
BOONE, Iowa (May 24) – Big changes are in
store for the biggest event in IMCA racing.
The Sept. 6-11 IMCA Speedway Motors Super
Nationals will see a switch in qualifying nights for Karl Chevrolet Northern
SportMods and Stock Cars.
Northern SportMods and Hobby Stocks will
qualify Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 6-7, while Stock Cars qualify Wednesday,
Thursday and Friday, Sept. 8-10.
Thirty heats and a single qualifying
feature are in store each night Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for the
Modifieds.
“Everything is based on time. That’s why
we’re making these changes,” explained IMCA Vice President of Operations
Brett Root. “We can’t continue to push the starting time up every afternoon
and then race until early the next morning.”
Main events for Modifieds, Stock Cars,
Hobby Stocks and Northern SportMods, as well as the respective races of
champions, remain on Saturday.
Super Nationals entries have topped the
800 mark each of the last two years.
Northern SportMods have made the biggest
impact on car count numbers, debuting at Boone Speedway with 54 entries in
2005 and growing to 165 last year.
Modifieds have averaged 318 entries,
Stock Cars 170 and Hobby Stocks 141 over the same period.
“We’re basically swapping four days,
moving Stock Cars from Monday and Tuesday and SportMods from Thursday and
Friday,” said Root. “This addresses our main concern, based on Thursday night
at last year’s Super Nationals when we raced until well past midnight. We are
anticipating more SportMods in 2010 and that eventually the division will
rival the Modifieds number-wise. It’s one thing when weather causes a delay
but it’s another when you have your two biggest divisions racing the same
night.”
Hobby, SportMod and Stock drivers will
advance from both heats and “B” races to qualifying features.
The top 10 in the two Hobby qualifiers
Monday advance to the inside and middle rows of Saturday’s big dance. The top
10 in Tuesday’s qualifier make up the outside row.
SportMods will qualify the inside row on
Monday and the middle and outside row on Tuesday.
Both the Hobbies and SportMods will
redraw for Tuesday starting spots instead of lining up by points earned on the
first day.
Stocks draw Wednesday and Thursday before
lining up by points Friday. Heat and “B” winners on Wednesday and Thursday
advance to qualifying features to determine the inside and middle row of 10 in
the main event field. The outside row of 10 will be set on Friday.
Long-time fans will be familiar with the
format, previously employed at Super Nationals, for Modifieds.
Winners of 30 heats races each night
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday advance to qualifying features. The top eight
on Wednesday advance to the inside row for the main event, Thursday’s top
eight to the inside row and Friday’s top eight to the outside row.
Points awarded for “B” races those
evenings determine starting grids for 15 last chance heats on Saturday. Three
cars advance from each of three last chance features to complete the Modified
field of 33.
“Again, time is an important element.
Eliminating second and third qualifying features and pole dashes for Modifieds
will shorten all three race programs,” Root said. “We need to keep formats as
precise as possible to get feature events in place for the grand finale on
Saturday night.”
Both the Deery Brothers Summer Series
program for Late Models and Arnold Motor Supply Race of Champions for
SportMods qualifying are on Labor Day.
Arnold Motor Supply RoC qualifying for
Hobby Stocks is set for Tuesday. The Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational, Sunoco
Race Fuels RoC qualifying for the Stocks and Harris Auto Racing RoC qualifying
for the Modifieds are on Friday.
“The length of a show is largely a
product of car counts and laps run. Obviously, we don’t know yet how many cars
will be at Boone for Super Nationals,” Root said. “We have to be very
cognizant of how this event affects the community of Boone. They’ve been very
supportive of Super Nationals but racing until 2 or 3 in the morning is not
fair to the city or its residents.”

Aikey can’t be caught in Marshalltown
Deery
MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (May 18) – There was
plenty of passing throughout the field, but the one IMCA Late Model no one
could catch was Jeff Aikey’s.
Aikey took the lead on the fifth of 50
laps in winning Tuesday’s Deery Brothers Summer Series feature at Marshalltown
Speedway. The $2,000 victory, the career 54th for the six-time and
defending tour champion, came in front of fellow heavy hitters Ray Guss Jr.
and Mark Burgtorf.
Jay Johnson and hard charger Terry Neal
rounded out the top five.
Greg Kastli started on the pole and led
the first four circuits before giving way on the high side to Aikey following
the first re-start of the contest.
Cautions scattered throughout the race
took backrunners out of play and no lapped cars were scored before Aikey took
the checkers.
Guss, the series point leader, started 11th
and made his way to second by midway but couldn’t mount a challenge. Burgtorf
re-started at the rear following an early spin and made his way back to third.
He’s now five points behind Guss in the updated standings.
“B” feature qualifier Neal advanced 14
positions from his original starting spot. Tyler Bruening also made his way
from his “B” to sixth in the feature, moving up 10 places.
Boone McLaughlin was a plus 12 on the
night for eighth while provisional starter Matt Strassheim moved up 13 places
to 10th.
Darrel DeFrance also had to re-start at
the rear early on and raced his way into the top four before a cut tire sent
him to the pits. He returned to salvage 16th place points.
The win was Aikey’s third at
Marshalltown. His first came on July 9, 1987, in the seventh event of the
inaugural series season. He also won there three years ago.
McLaughlin won the $250 Sunoco bonus.
Brett Moffitt topped the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod main event.
Next up on the Deery schedule is the
traditional Memorial Day show at Boone Speedway. IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, IMCA
Sunoco Hobby Stocks, Northern SportMods and the local dwarf class complete the
Monday, May 31 card.
Pit gates open at 2 p.m., the grandstand
opens at 3 p.m., hot laps are at 4 p.m. and racing starts at 5 p.m.

First night for IMCA Modifieds is April
24 at Colorado’s El Paso County Speedway
CALHAN, Colo. (April 21) – Ten Saturday
shows for IMCA Modifieds are on the schedule this season at El Paso County
Speedway.
Opening night is April 24.
The quarter-mile D-shaped clay track was
built four years ago around an existing rodeo arena at the fairgrounds in
Calhan. Both horse and automotive races had previously been held on a
half-mile track at the same site.
“We had run Modifieds very similar to
IMCA’s since the track opened in 2007,” explained Alan Davis, promoter and
president of the Colorado Outlaw Racing Association. “Our drivers had started
expressing an interest in IMCA at the tail of the 2008 season. The rules are
the biggest thing because they level the playing field for the drivers.
Sanctioning also adds legitimacy to our local program because IMCA is a
national organization.”
El Paso County will be part of IMCA’s
ButlerBuilt Central Region for the Modifieds. Other race dates are May 8 and
15, June 19, July 3, 17 and 24, Aug. 7 and 21, and Sept. 18.
The 40-lap feature on July 3 pays $500 to
win and will be followed by fireworks. The County Fair Night show is July 24.
“We want this to be a family oriented
track,” Davis said, noting grandstand seating for 3,400 and new lighting
installed last year. “We’re 30 miles east of Colorado Springs and that puts us
near a market of half a million people.”
The fourth track in Colorado to start or
resume sanctioning this year, El Paso County looks to convert two other
classes to IMCA divisions in the near future.
“We already have what is basically an
IMCA Stock Car class and will most likely add that sanction in 2012,” said
Davis. “We also have a hornet class similar to IMCA’s Sport Compacts and will
probably sanction them when we do the Stock Cars.”

Dubuque Deery Series checkers fly for
Burgtorf
DUBUQUE, Iowa (April 18) – Race fans went
home buzzing about the start, the finish and every lap in between of the first
ever Deery Brothers Summer Series event at Dubuque Fairgrounds Speedway
Mark Burgtorf got back to his winning
ways Sunday night, reeling in long-time leader Ray Guss Jr. with seven laps
left to capture his third $2,000 victory in five IMCA Late Model tour events
this spring.
The early excitement came on the opening
lap, when Kevin Blum flipped in the first set of turns. IMCA’s defending
national champion was not injured but two wreckers were called to transport
his car back to the pits.
Guss ended his night as the runner-up and
saw his advantage over Burgtorf in the point race pared to four markers. Dan
Shelliam made the second feature appearance of his Deery career and finished
third. Rookie contenders Jason Rauen and Andy Eckrich rounded out the top
five.
Pole starter Jeremiah Hurst led the first
two laps before giving way to Rauen. A myriad of cautions slowed the race
before Guss took the lead on lap nine.
Guss stretched his advantage to most of a
straightaway midway through the 50-lap feature, Burgtorf, Shelliam, Mike
Murphy Jr. and Rauen used all the lines and weaved around back runners, making
up ground on Guss during a lengthy fight for the second spot.
That edge eventually went to Burgtorf,
who went to the top to pass Guss for the point on lap 44. Guss kept the race
close, crossing the finish line a couple car lengths back. Eckrich worked his
way to fifth while hard charger Murphy moved up 10 spots and finished sixth.
Now tied with Curt Martin for second on
the career Deery wins list with 25 checkers, Burgtorf matched his total for
the entire 2009 campaign with the Sunday checkers. He’d won a personal best
four times in 2001, on the way to earning his second of three career tour
championships.
Forty-four Late Models were in the pits
at Dubuque. That put the tour average at 52.4 entries for each of the five
April events, about five cars better than last year’s pace.
Guss won the $250 Sunoco bonus.
With the start of the regular Late Model
point season scheduled this Friday, the Deery Series is idle until resuming
Tuesday, May 18 at Marshalltown Speedway.

Aikey dominates Jackson County Deery for
53rd career IMCA Late Model tour win
MAQUOKETA, Iowa (April 17) – It took
seven laps for Jeff Aikey to get to the front of the Deery Brothers Summer
Series feature field at Jackson County Speedway.
Once he got there, the rest of the IMCA
Late Model tour race was for second.
Aikey caught Jay Johnson and led the last
43 times around the track Saturday night, passing half the pack before his big
lead was erased by a caution with 13 laps to go. He checked out again
following the re-start, taking the checkers comfortably ahead of hard charger
Terry Neal.
The win paid $2,000 and was Aikey’s Deery
career 53rd. The six time and defending tour champion had also won
at Maquoketa in 1998 and 2002.
Neal qualified from his “B” race and
passed 16 cars in collecting runner-up honors. Mark Burgtorf, series point
leader Ray Guss Jr. and Josh Most completed the top five. Johnson was sixth.
Guss won the second “B” and advanced 13
positions. Tyler Bruening pocketed the $250 Sunoco bonus.
The 49 Late Model entries made for a
Deery track record at Jackson County, topping 42 car counts for events in 2004
and again in 2006.
Forty-nine entries on Saturday also
pushed the total to 12,816 for the 356 series events held since 1987. That
pencils out to a precise average of 36 cars a night.
Wrapping up the weekend tripleheader is
the first-ever visit by the series to Dubuque Fairgrounds Speedway on Sunday.
Pit gates open at 4 p.m. and the grandstand opens at 5 p.m. Hot laps are at 6

Guss runs away from Davenport Deery field
DAVENPORT, Iowa (April 16) – Ray Guss Jr.
couldn’t have asked for much more from Friday’s Deery Brothers Summer Series
feature at Davenport Speedway.
Guss earned $2,000 for his first IMCA
Late Model tour victory of the season and took over the top spot in the early
series point standings. Mark Burgtorf had come to town looking for his third
win in as many 2010 races but broke shortly after relinquishing the lead to
Guss before midway and was relegated to 18th.
Andy Eckrich fashioned a runner-up finish
in just the second feature appearance of his Deery career. Six-time champion
Jeff Aikey bounced back from a tough opening weekend for third while Tom
Darbyshire and Justin Reed rounded out the top five.
The 50-lapper started with Burgtorf
taking the green from the outside of row one. He ran at the front with
pressure eventually coming from the sixth starting Guss and the eighth
starting Jason Rauen.
Frequent yellows slowed the contest, two
casualties being Rauen and Burgtorf. Guss had finally caught up and was first
across the line on lap 22, then Burgtorf broke half a lap later and coasted to
a stop on the backstretch.
The race ran without caution from that
point and Guss checked out on everybody, winning his 17th Deery feature and
his first at Davenport since 1999. The real fight was for second and Eckrich
eventually prevailed in a tussle that frequently saw four or five cars
challenging for the spot.
Eckrich, Darbyshire and Reed all drove
their way into the main event through “B” features. Eckrich advanced 11
positions from his original start while Reed scored hard charger honors,
moving up 15 spots.
Consistent Darrel DeFrance ran sixth in
his 355th career Deery outing. He’s now third in the standings,
seven points behind Guss and one back of Burgtorf.
Brett Diercks
was the $250 Sunoco drawing winner. Fifty-seven cars were entered at Davenport,
right at the series average through the first three of 16 events.
Night two of the weekend tripleheader
takes the series to Jackson County Speedway at Maquoketa on Saturday. Pit
gates open at 4 p.m. and the grandstand opens at 4:30 p.m., hot laps are at
5:30 p.m. and racing starts at 6 p.m.

Davenport,
Jackson County, Dubuque dates next for Deery Series
DAVENPORT, Iowa
(April 13) – After opening his 2010 Deery Brothers Summer Series campaign with
back to back feature wins, Mark Burgtorf looks to add another accomplishment to
his already stellar IMCA Late Model tour resume.
Burgtorf owns
three championships and 24 victories over the course of his Deery career. He’s
now won consecutive races for the third time and will try for a third straight
trophy when the series travels to Davenport Speedway on Friday, April 16 for the
first show in a weekend tripleheader.
Night two is
Saturday, April 17 at Jackson County Speedway in Maquoketa. Dubuque Fairgrounds
Speedway hosts its first ever tour event on Sunday, April 18.
Six-time and
defending series champion Jeff Aikey is the last driver to have won three
straight Deery features, in 2000. Curt Martin is the only driver to have
achieved the feat twice in the same season, enroute to the 1990 tour title.
The series
record is four straight wins, established by Gary Webb in 1994 and matched by
Rob Toland in 2004. Not surprisingly, both drivers were Deery champions those
years.
Burgtorf is the
defending race winner at Davenport, where a track record 61 Late Models
contended last April. Aikey has won four of the other 14 previous series events
there.
Pit gates open
at 4 p.m. and the grandstand opens at 5 p.m. Friday at Davenport. Hot laps are
at 6 p.m. and racing starts at 6:30 p.m.
Terry Neal had
won three straight Deery races at Maquoketa before Ray Guss Jr. snapped the
string last summer.
Jackson County
opens the pit gates at 4 p.m. and the grandstand at 4:30 p.m. Hot laps are at
5:30 p.m. and racing begins at 6 p.m.
Grandstand
admission to both Bob Wagener promoted tracks is $14 for adults, $12 for seniors
and teenagers and $6 for kids ages 7-12, with youngsters six and under admitted
free.
IMCA Modifieds
will run for national, ButlerBuilt North Central Region and Allstar Performance
State points Friday and Saturday.
Dubuque becomes
the 40th different track visited by the series in the weekend finale.
Gates open at 4 p.m., the grandstand opens at 5 p.m. and hot laps are set for 6
p.m., with racing to follow.
Grandstand
admission is $15 for adults and $12 for seniors. Students 13 years and older
with a school ID pay $10 while kids 12 and under get in at no charge.
All three main
events pay $2,000 to win and a minimum of $250 to start. Pit passes are $25.
Sixty-eight
different drivers competed at season opening shows April 10 at 34 Raceway and
April 11 at Quincy Raceway.
IMCA’s regular
point season for Late Models begins April 23; the Deery Series resumes with a
Tuesday, May 18 show at Marshalltown Speedway.

Burgtorf makes it two straight with
Sunday Deery Series win at Quincy
QUINCY, Ill. (April 11) – A different
driver challenged at a different track, but the name at the top of the results
for the second Deery Brothers Summer Series event of the season is the same as
at the first.
Mark Burgtorf won his second IMCA Late
Model tour feature in as many nights, topping Sunday’s show at Quincy Raceway.
He’s now an eight-time series winner at his hometown track and raked in $2,000
for his 24th career Deery victory.
Jason Frankel, another Quincy hotshoe,
led for nearly a third of the 50-lapper before finally giving way to Burgtorf
and settled for second.
Rounding out the top five were Ray Guss
Jr., Keith Pratt and Denny Woodworth. A Quincy series record 50 Late Models
were in the pits, two more than the previous mark set in April of 2007.
Pole starter Darrel DeFrance ran in front
of the pack for the first 12 circuits before Frankel used the higher line to
take the lead away.
Burgtorf slipped past DeFrance on lap 18,
shortly before Frankel began encountering backrunners.
Cautions at midway brought the field back
together. Burgtorf maintained his pressure on the leader, passing Frankel
coming out of turn four on lap 34 and then checking out.
Two lapped cars and most of a
straightaway separated Burgtorf and Frankel at the finish.
Woodworth made his way to fifth from the
18th starting spot. Tom Goble earned the hard charger provisional
and moved up 10 positions to 12th. The $250 Sunoco bonus went to
Josh Most.
Burgtorf had to track down and then hold
off Nate Beuseling to collect top dollar in the series opener Saturday at 34
Raceway.
A weekend tripleheader is next on the
schedule, with races Friday, April 16 at Davenport Speedway and Saturday,
April 17 at Jackson County Speedway before the first ever series race at
Dubuque Fairgrounds Speedway on Sunday, April 18.

Burgtorf battles Beuseling before taking
Deery Series opener at 34
WEST BURLINGTON, Iowa (April 10) – Mark
Burgtorf has made a habit of winning Deery Brothers Summer Series features at
34 Raceway. His Saturday victory was another one for the IMCA Late Model tour
record book.
Burgtorf finally got the edge over Nate
Beuseling following a lengthy side-by-side battle, to take opening night
honors for the 24th annual series. The three-time tour champion
earned $3,000 for the West Burlington victory, his circuit career 23rd
and seventh at 34.
He’s now the only driver in series
history to have won seven times at two different tracks, owning the same
number of trophies from his hometown Quincy Raceway.
Beuseling’s runner-up finish was the best
of his brief Deery career. He’d run sixth last summer at Knoxville. Rob Toland
passed the most cars in his heat and “B” feature to get the hard charger
provisional, then passed 19 more cars to finish third.
Tom Goble and Matt Strassheim rounded out
the top five.
Ryan Giles took the initial green from
outside the front row and led the first three laps before the fourth starting
Beuseling drove by.
Burgtorf made his way from the ninth
starting spot and chased Beuseling into lapped traffic. He was on the leader’s
back bumper when the only caution of the 50-lapper came out right at midway,
then took the lead briefly on the 32nd circuit.
Beuseling was back in front when the next
lap was scored. The front pair went back and forth, Burgtorf on the inside and
faster in the first set of turns, Beuseling higher up and faster coming out of
the second set. Burgtorf was finally able to make what proved to be the
winning pass on lap 40, crossing the stripe two car lengths in front of
Beuseling.
Defending champion Jeff Aikey made the
main event by winning his “B” and finished 18th. 2009 runner-up
Jason Frankel had won both Deery races at West Burlington last year but had to
take a provisional to get in the starting grid, ending in 12th.
Sixty-four Late Models were entered at
34. The second annual Slocum 50 was held in memory of local track champion and
Deery regular Brenton Slocum and a portion of the proceeds from ticket sales
went to the scholarship fund in his name benefiting area high school students.
Todd Malmstrom took home the $250 Sunoco
bonus.
Night two of the season opening
doubleheader on Sunday, April 11 sees the Deery Series at Quincy Raceway. Pit
gates open at 3 p.m., the grandstand opens at 4 p.m. Hot laps follow the 4:45
p.m. drivers’ meeting and racing starts at 5:30 p.m.

Bassett rewards IMCA SportMod, Stock Car
drivers
BURLINGTON, Wis. (April 6) – Post-season
prizes for both IMCA SportMod divisions and the IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars make up
Bassett Racing Wheel’s contingency program again in 2010.
Track champions in the Stock Car class, as
well as the Southwest Racing Specialties Southern SportMod and Karl Chevrolet
Northern SportMod divisions, all receive $60 product certificates good toward
the purchase of four wheels from the Burlington, Wis., manufacturer.
National champions in all three divisions
receive sets of four wheels.
Bassett returns to the national decal
program for the two SportMod classes and drivers in each of those divisions must
display two Bassett decals on their race car to be eligible for contingencies.
Information about Bassett-made wheels is
available by calling 888 888-7199 and at the
www.bassettwheel.com website.
"Bassett enters their 16th season of
partnership as one of the top 10 IMCA sponsors in terms of program longevity,”
said Kevin Yoder, director of marketing for IMCA. “Their loyalty to our racers
has been outstanding and we are pleased to continue our relationship in 2010."
Gustin, Murphy, Jerovetz,
Murty top Boone Frostbuster features
BOONE, Iowa (April 3) – Jimmy Gustin
towed all the way to Texas to get his first IMCA Modified feature win of the
season.
He raced much closer to home to get his
second.
Gustin sped past long time leader Dan
Ratajczak following a lap 20 re-start, then led the last five times around the
track in topping Saturday’s $1,000 to win Frostbuster special main event at
Boone Speedway.
Ratajczak had set the fast pace from the
second circuit on, pulling away from the rest of the field before each of the
cautions that punctuated the Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot
qualifying event.
Gustin, who’d journeyed to 281 Speedway
in Texas last month to get an early start to his season, finally caught the
right groove to catch Ratajczak.
Josh Gilman, Jeff Stephens, Jonathan
Snyder and Ratajczak would complete the top five.
The season opening Frostbuster brought
164 cars to Boone. Defending track champion Trent Murphy was the $500 IMCA
Sunoco Stock Car winner, Wisconsin visitor Troy Jerovetz captured the $300
Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod checkers and Nick Murty paced the IMCA Sunoco
Hobby Stocks in their $250 to win show.
Murphy was most of a straightaway ahead
when a caution bunched the Stock Car field back up with seven laps to go, but
he quickly reasserted himself and was six car lengths ahead of Mike
VanGenderen at the finish.
VanGenderen ran second and Damon Murty
ran third the last 15 laps. Dustin Smith and Donavon Smith followed.
Jerovetz took over the lead on the 13th
of 20 SportMod circuits and had to hold Geoff Olson off at the finish, winning
by half a car length.
The only caution of the race came before
the first lap was scored. Scott Davis, early leader Cody Hennings and Jared
Timmerman followed Jerovetz and Olson across the stripe.
Murty impressed in winning the Hobby
main, running in front the last 12 of 15 laps.
Chris Hupp, Nyle Godwin, John Watson and
Donnie Gustoff completed the top five.
First night for track points at Boone is
April 10.

Richie Gustin tops IMCA
Modifieds at Benton County Speedway Frostbuster
VINTON, Iowa (April 4) – Early cautions
were the only thing that slowed Richie Gustin down, in Sunday’s IMCA Modified
Frostbuster feature at Benton County Speedway.
Gustin led the last 19 of 20 laps in
taking the $1,000 top prize. He’d started fourth and, following the fifth and
final yellow of the contest, ran away from the rest of the field as the green
flag stayed out the rest of the way. Gustin had just gotten into lapped
traffic before crossing the finish line comfortably ahead of Mark Elliott.
Troy Cordes was third while Scott Hogan
sped from the 18th starting spot to fourth.
The victory puts Gustin on the ballot for
the 2010 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational, to be held during the IMCA
Speedway Motors Super Nationals in September.
Other winners during Vinton’s season
opening show were Scooter Dulin in the IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, Danny Dvorak in
the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods, Scott Pippert in the IMCA Sunoco Hobby
Stocks and Justin Wacha in the Mach-1 Sport Compacts.
Dulin was in the right place at the right
time to inherit the lead after a white flag lap tangle at the front of the
Stock Car pack.
That collision sent race-long leader
Damon Murty to the infield while second running Jeff Mueller and Brian Irvine
went to the pits. Dulin led the rest of the way, getting the $500 win ahead of
Justin Temeyer, Bob Ahrendson and Jason DeShaw.
After his first pass for the lead was
negated by a caution, Dvorak caught Chris Luloff a second time in the
time-shortened SportMod main.
The victory would be good for $300.
Johnny Whitman, Joel Rust and Luloff chased Dvorak to the checkers.
The defending track champion, Pippert ran
at the front of the Hobby Stock feature from start to finish for a $250
payday. Nick Murty ran second most of the way but couldn’t close the gap; Wes
Stanek and Jerome Wilson rounded out the top four.
Wacha ran in front the last three times
around the track in the $125 to win Sport Compact feature. Brad Chandler,
Brett Vanous and Steve Miedke rounded out the top four finishers.
The first night for local track points at
Vinton is April 11.

Sooner Roundup rescheduled to April 3-4
CLINTON, Okla. (March 19) – The last blast
of winter has postponed the Sooner Roundup special to what will hopefully be a
more spring-like weekend in April.
Wild West Speedway officials announced this
morning that forecasts for 4-8 inches of snow in Clinton on Saturday, as well
as 10 inches or more further north in Oklahoma, forced rescheduling of the IMCA
sanctioned event from March 20-21 to Saturday and Sunday, April 3-4.
An open practice session is now planned for
Friday, April 2 from 6-11 p.m. No change has been made in the respective race
cards, which still see the two IMCA SportMod classes on the same programs for
the first time.
Southwest Racing Specialties Southern
SportMods race for $350 to win on Saturday and for $1,000 in their regional
event on Sunday. Top checks for Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods are $250 on
opening night and $400 on Sunday.
IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks run for $250 to
win on Saturday and for $300 on Sunday. Trophies go to top four finishers in the
first night feature for Mach-1 Sport Compacts while the Sunday winner earns
$100.
Southern SportMods, Hobby Stocks and Sport
Compacts are newly sanctioned at Wild West this season and all applicable IMCA
points will be awarded. National points will be given for both Northern SportMod
events.
Gates open at 4 p.m. Saturday, sign-in ends
and the grandstand opens at 7 p.m., and racing starts at 8 p.m. On Sunday, gates
will open at 11 a.m., sign-in ends and the grandstand opens at 2 p.m., and
racing gets underway at 3 p.m.
A $25 track registration fee will be
charged to each car and pit passes are $25 each day. Grandstand admission will
be $10 for adults and $4 for kids ages 6-12, with youngsters five and under
getting in free.
More information about the rescheduled
Sooner Roundup is available by calling 580 323-3993 or 405 990-3990, and at the

Genesis adds SportMod awards to IMCA
program
ROSWELL, Ga. (Feb. 26) – Second year
sponsor Genesis Racing Shocks expands its unique contingency award program
with IMCA in 2010, adding prizes for both SportMod divisions.
IMCA Modified and IMCA Late Model drivers
are also in line for product certificates from the Roswell, Ga., company.
Top eligible drivers in national Late
Model, Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod and Southwest Racing Specialties
Southern SportMod standings receive $150. Each runnerup gets $250 and third
place nets $350.
The same $150-$250-$350 amounts apply for
top three eligible drivers in each of the five regions for Modifieds.
Drivers in all four classes must compete
with four Genesis-made shocks, display two Genesis decals on their race car
and return a signup form to the IMCA home office by Aug. 1 to be eligible.
Product certificates will be mailed to
Late Model award recipients after standings for that class become official in
September, and to Modified and SportMod drivers after their points become
official in October.
Information about Genesis
shocks is available by calling 678 659-9454 and at the
www.genesisshocks.com
website.
“By adding both SportMod divisions to the
contingency program this year, we know we are targeting more drivers who will
benefit from the relationship with Genesis,” IMCA Marketing Director Kevin
Yoder said. “The goal is to make sure all drivers with Genesis shocks
participate in the program and to ensure that no certificates go undistributed
in 2010."

Comp Cams, RHS renew awards for six IMCA
national champs, engine builders
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Feb. 20) – National
champions in six IMCA divisions and the manufacturers who power them to those
titles receive special awards
from Comp Cams and Racing Head Service for a third consecutive season.
Top drivers in the IMCA Modified, IMCA
Late Model, IMCA Sunoco Stock Car, IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock, Karl Chevrolet
Northern SportMod and Southwest Racing Specialties Southern SportMod classes,
as well as their respective engine builders, all receive $500 product
certificates, good toward any purchase from either Memphis, Tenn. based Comp
Performance company.
Certificates will be presented to drivers
during the national awards banquet in November. They’ll be mailed the
following week to powerplant suppliers.
"We have been able to recognize a diverse
group of engine builders in the first two years of this program and plan on
doing that again at the end of this season,” noted IMCA Marketing Director
Kevin Yoder. “The Comp Performance Group continues to grow and be a model of
support for IMCA racers in all divisions."
Comp Cams’ contingency program also
includes more than $10,000 in product certificates, to be awarded based on
regional standings for Modifieds, Stock Cars and Hobby Stocks, and national
standings for Late Models and both SportMod divisions.
An integral part of IMCA’s national
Modified decal program since 2003, the engine component manufacturer again
awards $1,000 to the top five drivers in each of the five regions for that
division, in $300, $250, $200, $150 and $100 increments. Modified drivers are
required to display two Comp Cams decals on their race car to be eligible.
Top three prizes in both Stock Car and
both Hobby Stock regions will be given in the amounts of $300, $200 and $100.
National champions in the Late Model and
two SportMod divisions earn $500 certificates, with $200 for second and $100
for third.
One driver from each of the five Modified
regions and one driver from each of the two Stock Car regions get sets of RHS
bare/as cast cylinder heads. Those recipients will be determined by random
drawings held after point standings become official in October.
Drivers must compete with RHS-made
cylinder heads, display two RHS decals on their race car and return sign-up
forms to the IMCA home office by Aug. 1 to be eligible.
