Dart Iron Man Challenge kicks off August with ludicrous loot on the line

WEBSTER CITY, Iowa (June 21) – The hottest and toughest Stock Car drivers in the upper Midwest are gearing up for the hottest and toughest Stock Car series in the region as the Dart Iron Man Challenge invades five tracks in Iowa and Minnesota during the first six days of August.

The stretch could prove to be a mega-lucrative one for several racers as the newly-formed series for the full-fendered USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars. One driver – if he’s got what it takes – could walk away with more than $5,000 during the 120-hour time frame.

The action launches into high gear on Sunday, Aug. 1, with a $2,000-to-win affair at the Nobles County Speedway in Worthington, Minn. After a day off on Monday, the series then travels to the Algona (Iowa) Raceway, Cresco (Iowa) Speedway and Jackson (Minn.) Speedway on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for back-to-back-to-back blockbuster battles paying $1,000 each to win.

The week of racer wealth distribution wraps up on Friday, Aug. 6, at the Murray County Speedway in Slayton, Minn., with a possible $600 top prize up for grabs.

To add to the excitement, film crews will be present in Cresco, Jackson and Slayton for recording all the USMTS action for the upcoming Dirt Knights TV show. Dirt Knights will be an on-going dramatic series of one-hour programs that will air twice a week for 13 weeks. The much-anticipated TV show is set to debut in January of 2011 on the VERSUS cable network - the fastest growing cable sports network in the nation, which reaches more than 75 million households.

In all, 14 dates at 12 premier speedways throughout Iowa, Minnesota and Missouri dot the calendar for the inaugural campaign for the Dart Iron Man Challenge, which will accompany the popular USMTS Modifieds at each event.

Made possible by support from Dart Machinery and Allstar Performance, all races will pay a minimum of $500 to win and at least $100 to start. With 21 or more entries in the pit area, each race will pay at least $600 to win and $125 to start the main event.

The points fund carries a $1,000 top prize with the 10th-place finisher earning $100. In addition, each race will award national points in the USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Car division of the American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series where the national champion will earn $700.

Dart will award a $75 certificate to the winner of each event and a $50 certificate to the ninth-place finisher.

The Dart Iron Man Challenge will score a driver’s 10 best points during the 14-race campaign toward the final year-end standings. Drivers are invited and encouraged to compete in all 14 shows, but perfect attendance is not be necessary to be eligible for the year-end points total.

A USRA license is not required to compete and/or earn points in the Dart Iron Man Challenge, but only USRA-licensed drivers will be eligible for points funds in either the Dart Iron Man Challenge or American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series.

Each event will have a qualifying format similar to the USMTS, with heat race passing points determining the “B” Main and “A” Main line-ups.

USRA rules will apply at each event. Drivers are permitted to utilize the Rochester, Motorcraft or 1¾ Holley 4412 open carburetor but must be run with the Edelbrock Performer (Part #2701) or Weiand X-CELerator (Part ##7541) intake manifold. These intakes must be stock (no porting allowed). The 4412 carb must be stock and must be 1-11/16. For conforming to IMCA rules, the 350 carb is allowed with a 2,800-pound weight rule. Any driver running the 604 crate motor is allowed the 4-barrel carburetor.

Blattler, Wood, Carter, Kirkland ride to victory during Southern Iowa Fair presented by KBOE Radio

OSKALOOSA, Iowa (July 21) – The Southern Iowa Fair presented by KBOE Radio was in full swing Wednesday night and the Southern Iowa Speedway brought the action with another wild night of the American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series.

Steven Blattler of Oskaloosa took the lead away from polesitter Zack VanderBeek of New Sharon and bested a tough field of Musco USRA Modifieds to take the checkered flag. USMTS king Kelly Shryock of Fertile settled for the runner-up spot, VanderBeek held on for third, Corning’s Ryan Peckham was fourth and Josh Truman of Indianaola rounded out the top-5 finishers.

While short on entries, the USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars are never short on excitement at the Mahaska County Monster. Keswick’s Nathan Wood came from the sixth starting spot to take his second win in a row, holding off Agency’s Shane Weller at the finish line. Mike Van Genderen of Newton was third, while Oskaloosa pilots Kyle Harwood and Corey Stout finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Cayden Carter of Oskaloosa got a bit of redemption Wednesday night in winning the Cater’s Manufacturing USRA B-Mod main event after being disqualified after last week’s runner-up finish. Last week’s winner, Jason Mcdaniel of Eldon, was this week’s runner-up. Knoxville’s Bill Gibson was third, Carter Van Den Berg of Oskaloosa was fourth and Mike Wanders of Keswick snagged the fifth position.

Derek Kirkland of Centerville took another step toward his first track championship at Osky with a win in the USRA Hobby Stock feature race. Todd Reitzler of Grinnell earned the runner-up paycheck, Kris Walker of Oskaloosa was third, Steve Allen of Oskaloosa finished fourth and Eldon’s Craig Brown wound up fifth.

Another round of Wild Wednesday night racing action is on tap next Wednesday, July 28. Musco USRA Modifieds, USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars, Carter’s Manufacturing USRA B-Mods and USRA Hobby Stocks will make up the racing card that boasts the cream of the crop in machinery and talent in the Hawkeye State.

With 21 or more entries, the winner of the Musco USRA Modified main event will pocket $1,000 with a minimum $100 to each starter. USRA Stock Cars will race for $400 to win and $75 to start, while both the Carter’s Manufacturing USRA B-Mods and USRA Hobby Stocks will battle for $300 to win and $60 to start.

There is no entry fee, no driver registration fee and this attendance bonus will continue throughout the 2010 season.

Another Wild Wednesday on tap at Osky

OSKALOOSA, Iowa (July 12) – Another round of Wild Wednesday night racing action is on tap this Wednesday, July 14, at the Southern Iowa Speedway as the historic “Mahaska County Monster” hosts four classes in action on Palmer for Representative Night.

Musco USRA Modifieds, USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars, Carter’s Manufacturing USRA B-Mods and USRA Hobby Stocks will make up the racing card that boasts the cream of the crop in machinery and talent in the Hawkeye State.

Fans of the Osky oval typically find the hottest drivers in action each and every week, and Wednesday’s show is certain to offer more of the same as the cure for the Hump Day blues.

With 21 or more entries, the winner of the Musco USRA Modified main event will pocket $1,000 with a minimum $100 to each starter. USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars will race for $400 to win and $75 to start, while both the Carter’s Manufacturing USRA B-Mods and USRA Hobby Stocks will battle for $300 to win and $60 to start.

There is no entry fee, no driver registration fee and this attendance bonus will continue throughout the 2010 season.

Pits will open at 5 p.m., grandstands open at 5:30, hot laps begin at 7:15 and the first heat race starts at 7:30. General admission grandstand tickets are just $8 for adults, $3 for kids ages 6-12 and pit passes are $25. Children ages 5 and under are always admitted free of charge.

On the heels of back-to-back wins, Ron Ver Beek of Oskaloosa sits atop the Musco USRA Modified standings. Oskaloosa’s Steven Blattler is second, followed by Scott Dickey of Packwood, David Ott of Ankeny and Colt Mather of Webster.

Shane Weller of Agency grabbed the victory in the season opener for the USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars and continues to hold the top spot in the standings going into this Wednesday’s affair. Nathan Wood of Keswick, Dart Iron Man Challenge points leader Mike Van Genderen of Newton, Kyle Harwood of Oskaloosa and Rich Vogt of Fairfield round out the top five.

In the Carter’s Manufacturing USRA B-Mods, defending track champion Tyler Groenendyk of Oskaloosa clings to a slim lead over Bloomfield’s Mike Shelton. Young gun Cayden Carter of Oskaloosa sits third, Mike Wanders of Keswick is fourth and Bill Gibson of Knoxville holds down the fifth spot in the standings.

Derek Kirkland of Centerville picked up his career-first USRA Hobby Stock feature win back in May and remains the points leader, but with a mere one-point cushion over Oskaloosa’s Kris Walker. First-time winner two weeks ago, Steve Allen of Oskaloosa is third, Danny Thrasher of Agency is fourth and the fifth spot is occupied by Donavan Nunnikhoven of Sully.

Mark your calendars for next Wednesday, July 21, as KBOE Radio presents the Deery Bros IMCA Late Models during the Southern Iowa Fair. Jeff Aikey of Waterloo is the defending race champion.

Payne snares MARS Late Model win at OSKY; Nunnikhoven, Shelton top USRA action

OSKALOOSA, Iowa (July 1) – The Southern Iowa Speedway hosted a special Thursday night program, July 1, featuring the MARS DIRTcar Series, along with the Carter's Manufacturing USRA B-Mods and USRA Hobby Stocks racing for track and national points in the American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series.

Jeremy Payne of Springfield, Mo., led every lap en route to his first win of the 2010 season and his seventh MARS DIRTcar Series win of his career. Just one caution slowed the race action on lap 17 of the 30-lap feature when Mount Vernon's Chad Simpson slowed with a flat tire. Simpson started third on the grid and raced in that spot until misfortune struck.

Five-time MARS champion, fellow Springfield resident and Payne's teammate, Terry Phillips, started fifth and raced his way up to second on the half-mile Mahaska County Monster. Al Purkey of Coffeyville, Kan., started and finished fourth while Jason Utter of Columbus Junction started seventh and worked his way to a fifth-place finish.

Former USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Car track champion Zack VanderBeek made his first start in a dirt late model. The 25-year-old from nearby New Sharon, who often competes against Payne in the United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS), finished 17th in Thursday night's main event.

Twenty-five late models were on hand for the series debut at OSKY.

In the USRA Hobby Stock main event, Donavon Nunnikhoven of Sully used the pole position to lead the field and take the win. Nunnikhoven held off several challenges and survived some late cautions for the win. A good three-car battle for the second and third spot saw Danny Thrasher of Agency take the runner-up spot - one spot better than his third-place finish Wednesday night and with less sheet metal problems. The third spot was a battle with Oskaloosa’s Kris Walker and Tony Teninty of Eldon going wheel to wheel with Walker taking third ahead of Teninty.

The Carter’s Manufacturing USRA B-Mods saw Mike Wanders pace the field for the first seven laps before a yellow flag closed the field onto his rear bumper. On the restart, Mike Shelton of Bloomfield and Tyler Groenendyk of Oskaloosa mixed it up, swapping the runner-up spot several times before Shelton made the pass on Wanders while Groenendyk followed. When the checkers flew, Shelton took his first ever Carter’s Manufacturing USRA B-Mod triumph at OSKY. Groenendyk took second with Wanders in third and Jason McDaniel of Eldon in fourth.

Another wild night of wheel-to-wheel action is in store for next Wednesday, July 7, as Palmer For State Representative presents the American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series featuring Musco USRA Modifieds, USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars, Carter’s Manufacturing USRA B-Mods and USRA Hobby Stocks.

Pits open at 5 p.m., grandstands open at 5:30, hot laps begin at 7:15 and the first heat race starts at 7:30. Tickets are $8 for adults, $3 for kids ages 6-12 and children ages 5 and under are always admitted free of charge. Pit passes are $25.

VanderBeek, Wood, Carter, Nunnikhoven score Osky checkers

OSKALOOSA, Iowa (June 9) – Round 3 of the American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series was held at the Southern Iowa Speedway Wednesday night featuring a great night with some hot action in all four classes on Casey’s General Stores Night.

The Carter’s Manufacturing USRA B-Mods saw Jason McDaniel of Eldon and Cayden Carter of Oskaloosa bring the field to the green with McDaniel leading the pack for the first six laps before the battle heated up with Carter. Carter made the pass and went on to score his second win of the 2010 season at the Mahaska County Monster. McDaniel lost the battle between himself and last week’s winner, Tyler Groenendyk of Oskaloosa, for the runner-up position while Mike Shelton of Bloomfield finished fourth.

The USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars saw a race for the top spot with Nathan Wood of Keswick holding off several challenges to take his second straight win at Osky. Season opener winner Shane Weller of Agency snared the runner-up honors with Mike Van Genderen of Newton and Kyle Harwood of Oskaloosa battling for third with Harwood taking it by mere inches over Van Genderen, who crossed the finish line with a flat tire.

In the USRA Hobby Stock division, Matt Messmaker of Moravia looked to have his first win but instead settled for the second-place paycheck behind Donovan Nunnikhoven of Sully, who raced his way from the ninth starting spot for the win. Kris Walker of Oskaloosa held off Nick Murty of Chelsea for the third spot and Beacon’s Jim Hughes rounded out the top five.

The Musco USRA Modifieds went 20 laps with three lead changes between defending track champion Brad Pinkerton of New Sharon, Steven Blattler of Oskaloosa and Zack VanderBeek of New Sharon. Blattler paced the field until lap 15 before VanderBeek secured the lead and piloted his #33Z Casey’s General Stores Skyrocket to victory lane. Blattler wound up second with Colt Mather of Webster in third and Pinkerton fourth.

Another wild night of wheel-to-wheel action is in store for next Wednesday, June 16, as Community 1st Credit Union (www.c1stcreditunion.com) presents the American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series featuring Musco USRA Modifieds, USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars, Carter’s Manufacturing USRA B-Mods and USRA Hobby Stocks.

USRA Stock Cars will race for $400 to win and $75 to start, while both the Carter’s Manufacturing USRA B-Mods and USRA Hobby Stocks will battle for $300 to win and $60 to start.

Pits will open at 5 p.m., grandstands open at 5:30, hot laps begin at 7:15 and the first heat race starts at 7:30. General admission grandstand tickets are just $15 for adults, $5 for kids ages 6-12 and children ages 5 and under are always admitted free of charge. Pit passes are $30.

Van Genderen from last to first in Dart Iron Man Challenge at Highway 3 Raceway

ALLISON, Iowa (May 27) – The full-fendered USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars invaded the Highway 3 Raceway Thursday for Round 2 of the Dart Iron Man Challenge.

Against a stout field of veteran stock car pilots, Mike Van Genderen looked like a super hero with a thrilling drive from last on the first lap of the main event to hoisting the winner’s trophy 19 laps later.

After mechanical woes sidelined him in his heat race, Van Genderen was forced to start 18th on the grid. Slowly but surely the Newton, Iowa, ace clawed his way to the front of the field, and then sealed the deal with a high-side pass of leader Dan Trimble after a late-race restart.

The win was worth $500 to Van Genderen, who finished fifth in Wednesday’s Dart Iron Man Challenge debut at the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa and snagged the points lead away from Wednesday’s winner Nathan Wood of Sigourney.

Trimble held on to earn the runner-up paycheck while two drivers with nearly a half-century of experience between them – Larry Portis of Nora Springs and Steve Jackson of Polk City – finished third and fourth, respectively.

USMTS promoter Todd Staley of Webster City rounded out the top five finishers after passing four cars over the final two laps. Sixth through tenth went to Loren Kuennen, Dan Christopher, Wood, Jim Mitchell and Mike Bergan.

Up next for the Dart Iron Man Challenge will be another double-bill with the USMTS Modifieds on Saturday, June 19, at the Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, Mo.

In all, 14 dates dot the 2010 calendar for the Dart Iron Man Challenge. The USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars will accompany the popular USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour at each of the events. All races will pay $600 to win and $125 to start the main event with 21 or more entries in the field.

Dart will award a $75 certificate to the winner of each event and a $50 certificate to the ninth-place finisher, and each event will have a qualifying format similar to the USMTS with heat race passing points determining main event line-ups.

The Dart Iron Man Challenge points fund will carry a $1,000 top prize, with the tenth-place finisher earning $100. In addition, each race will award national points in the USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Car division of the American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series where the national champion will earn $700.

Wood fends off Weller in Dart Iron Man Challenge debut

OSKALOOSA, Iowa (May 26) – The Dart Iron Man Challenge made its debut on Wednesday night at the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa, with a tough and talented field on hand to compete in the inaugural event for the newly-formed series for the full-fendered USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars.

A familiar face found victory lane, however, as Nathan Wood of Sigourney held off Agency’s Shane Weller by less than a car-length to etch his name in the record books as the first winner of the Dart Iron Man Challenge.

The former Southern Iowa Speedway track champion and USRA Hobby Stock national champion took the lead at the halfway point of the 20-lap feature race, and then beat Weller by less than ten feet as the pair streaked beneath the checkered flags.

Mark Elliott of Webster City came home third, with Marshalltown veteran Rick Gustin fourth and Mike VanGenderen of Newton claiming the fifth spot. Mike Bergan, Steve Jackson, Rich Vogt, Greg Elliott and Jim Mitchell finished sixth through tenth, respectively.

Defending track champion Tyler Groenendyk of Oskaloosa celebrated his 21st birthday in the winners circle Wednesday night with a dominating performance in the USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mod feature. Fellow Osky racer Cayden Carter took runner-up honors, followed by polesitter Mike Wanders, Mike Shelton and Curtis Van Der Wahl.

In USRA Hobby Stock action, Centerville’s Derek Kirkland captured his career-first checkered flag at the Southern Iowa Speedway by holding off Andy Coleman of Packwood at the finish line of the 15-lap main event. Last week’s winner, Kris Walker, took third with Oskaloosa’s Steve Allen fourth and Jim Hughes of Beacon rounding out the top five.

Round 2 of the Dart Iron Man Challenge happens in less than 24 hours. Thursday’s event at the Highway 3 Raceway in Allison, Iowa, will kick off with hot laps at 6:30 p.m. and racing at 7. Also on the card that evening will be the USMTS Modifieds along with USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods and USRA Hobby Stocks. Gates open at 5 p.m.

Race fans can pick up $2-off coupons on race day at Casey’s General Stores locations in Allison, Aplington and Clarksville. For more information or to find the Casey’s location nearest you, check out www.caseys.com.

The Highway 3 Raceway is located 0.3 miles north of SR 3 on S. Main St. (at the Butler County Fairgrounds). For more information, call 319-267-9977 or check out www.highway3raceway.com online.

Dart Iron Man Challenge kicks off May 26-27 at Oskaloosa, Allison

OSKALOOSA, Iowa (May 24) – The “Dart Iron Man Challenge” will make its debut on Wednesday, May 26, at the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa. The next night (Thursday, May 27), the newly-formed series for the full-fendered USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars invades the Highway 3 Raceway in Allison, Iowa.

In all, 14 dates at 12 premier speedways throughout Iowa, Minnesota and Missouri dot the calendar for the 2010 campaign

The ultra-competitive and exciting USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars will be teaming up with the undisputed heavyweight champion of Modified racing this season to create the ultimate feast for the action-hungry dirt racing fan as the Dart Iron Man Challenge will accompany the popular USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour at each of the 14 events.

“We have had a lot of calls from drivers who want to come and race the series,” said USRA President Todd Staley. “The payout is awesome, the points fund is awesome, the schedule is awesome and our Stock Car rules should allow all Stock Car drivers in the region the opportunity to come in and compete in the Dart Iron Man Challenge.”

Made possible by support from Dart Machinery and Allstar Performance, all races will pay $600 to win and $125 to start the main event with 21 or more entries in the field.

The ten-race points fund will carry a $1,000 top prize with the tenth-place finisher earning $100.

Dart will award a $75 certificate to the winner of each event and a $50 certificate to the ninth-place finisher, and each event will have a qualifying format similar to the USMTS, with heat race passing points determining the “B” Main and “A” Main line-ups.

In addition, each race will award national points in the USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Car division of the American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series where the national champion will earn $700.

On Wednesday, pit gates open at 5 p.m., grandstands open at 5:30, hot laps begin at 7:15 and racing starts at 7:30. Along with the USMTS Modifieds, rounding out the evening’s racing card will be USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods and USRA Hobby Stocks racing for track and national points in the American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series.

Race fans can stop by the Casey’s General Store in Oskaloosa on Wednesday from 12-2 p.m. to help celebrate the kickoff of the Keeping the Dream Alive Tour with Zack VanderBeek and his Victory Junction USMTS Modified and pick up your $2-off coupon for the show that night at the Mahaska County Monster.

The Southern Iowa Speedway is located 0.5 mile west of US 63 on SR 92 (A Ave. West), then 0.3 mile north on N. I St. (at the Southern Iowa Fairgrounds). Day-of-race information is available by calling 641-673-7004 or online at www.rlpromtions.com.

Thursday will kick off with hot laps at 6:30 p.m. and racing at 7. Also on the card that evening will be the USMTS Modifieds along with USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods and USRA Hobby Stocks. Gates open at 5 p.m.

Race fans can pick up $2-off coupons on race day at the Casey’s General Stores locations in Allison, Aplington and Clarksville.

The Highway 3 Raceway is located 0.3 miles north of SR 3 on S. Main St. (at the Butler County Fairgrounds). For more information, call 319-267-9977 or check out www.highway3raceway.com online.

With 14 races on the schedule, the Dart Iron Man Challenge will take a driver’s 10 best points finishes toward the final year-end standings. Drivers are invited and encouraged to compete in all 14 races, but won’t be necessary for the year-end points total.

A USRA license is not required to compete in Dart Iron Man Challenge events, but only USRA-licensed drivers will be eligible for points funds in either the Dart Iron Man Challenge or American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series.

USRA rules will apply at each event. Regarding engine rules, drivers will be allowed to use the Rochester, Motorcraft or 1¾ Holley 4412 open carburetor (the same that was legal in 2008) but must be run with the Edelbrock Performer (Part #2701) or Weiand X-CELerator (Part ##7541) intake manifold. These intakes must be stock (no porting allowed). The 4412 carb must be stock and must be 1-11/16. For IMCA-legal Stock Cars, any driver wishing to run the 350 carb is allowed with a 2,800-pound weight rule. Any driver running the 604 crate motor is allowed the 4-barrel carburetor.

Mather, Weller, Carter, Walker score opening night victories at Southern Iowa Speedway

OSKALOOSA, Iowa (May 19) – After harsh spring weather delayed last week’s long-anticipated 2010 season opener, American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series action returned to the historic Southern Iowa Speedway Wednesday evening. Comfortable weather and prime track conditions greeted the anxious fans and eager competitors at the half-mile Mahaska County Monster, and the on-track action proved to be worth the wait.

The first feature to hit the track was the Carter’s Manufacturing USRA B-Mods. Oskaloosa’s Cayden Carter, who celebrated his 14th birthday on Tuesday, battled polesitter Jason McDaniel of Eldon and Joe Gibb Racing developmental driver Brett Moffett of Grimes before leading the 21 starters to the checkered flag for his first victory of the season. McDaniel and Moffitt followed, with defending track champion Tyler Groenendyk and Bloomfield’s Mike Shelton rounding out the top five in the 15-lapper.

Shane Weller of Agency dominated the opening night of the USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Car division, winning both the heat race and the 15-lap feature event. Mike VanGenderen of Newton finished second, followed by seventh-place starter Nathan Wood of Keswick. Rich Vogt of Fairfield, who started on the outside pole, held on for fourth with Oskaloosa’s Toby Smith fifth.

Kris Walker of Oskaloosa triumphed in the caution-plagued USRA Hobby Stock feature. Craig Brown of Eldon and Derek Kirkland Centerville managed to post podium finishes. Kellogg’s Donavon Nunnikhoven made an exciting charge from the 19th starting position for a fourth-place finish ahead of Tony Tenity of Eldon.

The final feature of the evening belonged to the Musco USRA Modifieds. Packwood’s Scott Dickey led the field to the green flag, but it was outside polesitter Colt Mather of Webster who paced the first and, ultimately, last circuit of the 20-lap feature. Mather found himself dominating the field early on before a caution flew on lap 6 for an incident involving the Ryan Schaffer of Corning in turns 1-2.

On the restart, Mather jumped to a big lead again as the field stacked up three- and four-wide behind him. It appeared that Mather, who was primarily using the high line to work his way around the half-mile clay oval, would go unchallenged until Oskaloosa’s Ron Ver Beek closed in on Mather’s bumper with five laps to go and began searching for a line to battle for the lead. Ver Beek was able to battle side by side in the turns, but Mather’s high side momentum brought the two machines nose to tail in the straight-aways.

With two circuits remaining, fans were brought to their feet when the lead duo caught the lapped machine of David Ott. When Mather attempted to overtake Ott in the first turn, Ver Beek powered to the bottom of the speedway, leaving Ott helplessly wedged between the two leaders. Mather and Ver Beek exited the corner virtually equal, but it was Mather who regained the lead. Ver Beek’s last-lap bid was unsuccessful as he followed Mather across the finish line. Nine-time USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Champion Kelly Shryock earned a third-place finish after starting on the outside of the fourth row. Zack Vanderbeek advanced six positions to finish fifth behind Josh Truman of Indianola.

Next Wednesday, May 26, the mud-slinging Modifieds of the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour invade Oskaloosa for the 9th Annual Spring Challenge. The event will be the first of five straight shows throughout Iowa and Minnesota during the Memorial Day Weekend, so race fans can expect to witness the best of the best in dirt Modified racing for the first points race in the Farm Boy BBQ Sauce Central States Region presented by Arnold Motor Supply.

Giving race fans even more bang for their buck, next Wednesday’s blockbuster event will also be the inaugural event for the Dart Iron Man Challenge for USRA Stock Cars. Rounding out the program will be the Carter’s Manufacturing USRA B-Mods and USRA Hobby Stocks.

The Southern Iowa Speedway is a half-mile semi-banked clay oval located 0.5 mile west of US 63 on SR 92, then 0.3 mile north on I St. (at the Southern Iowa Fairgrounds). Hottest drivers in Hawkeye State converge on Southern Iowa Speedway Wednesday

OSKALOOSA, Iowa (May 18) – Another season of Wild Wednesday night racing action is on tap Wednesday at the Southern Iowa Speedway as the historic Mahaska County Monster opens the 2010 season with the American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series.

Musco USRA Modifieds, USRA Stock Cars, Carter’s Manufacturing USRA B-Mods and USRA Hobby Stocks will make up the racing card that boasts the cream of the crop in machinery and talent in the Hawkeye State.

While the fans of the Osky oval typically find the hottest drivers in action each and every week, this Wednesday’s show is certain to raise the bar even higher. One week later, a massive doubleheader featuring the mud-slinging Modifieds of the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour and the inaugural event for the Dart Iron Man Challenge for USRA Stock Cars will be at the Oskaloosa, Iowa, speedplant and many drivers will be looking to get their racecars dialed-in a week ahead of time.

In addition to the usual crop of Musco USRA Modified masters such as defending track champion Brad Pinkerton, Zack VanderBeek, Steven Blattler, Scott Dickey, Josh Truman, Brandon Banks, Colt Mather and others, a few surprise entries have also announced their plans to be at Osky Wednesday including nine-time USMTS National Champion Kelly Shryock, Webster City’s Mark Elliott and more.

There is no entry fee, no driver registration fee required and this payoff bonus will continue throughout the 2010 season.

Pits will open at 5 p.m., grandstands open at 5:30, hot laps begin at 7:15 and the first heat race starts at 7:30. General admission grandstand tickets are just $8 for adults, $3 for kids ages 6-12 and pit passes are $25. Children under 6 are always admitted free of charge.

Defending track champions at the Southern Iowa Speedway are Brad Pinkerton of New Sharon (Musco USRA Modifieds), Matt Greiner of Washington (USRA Stock Cars), Tyler Groenendyk of Oskaloosa (Carter’s Manufacturing USRA B-Mods) and Nathan Wood of Keswick (USRA Hobby Stocks).

If Mother Nature interferes again like last week, then Thursday night, May 20, will be used as a rain date for the season-opening event.

The Southern Iowa Speedway is a half-mile semi-banked clay oval located 0.5 mile west of US 63 on SR 92, then 0.3 mile north on I St. (at the Southern Iowa Fairgrounds). USRA unveils fourteen-race schedule for “Dart Iron Man Challenge” inaugural season

WEBSTER CTY, Iowa (April 26) – The inaugural season for the “Dart Iron Man Challenge” for USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars has fourteen dates at twelve different premier speedways throughout Iowa, Minnesota and Missouri for the 2010 campaign, officials from the United States Racing Association announced today.

The ultra-competitive and exciting USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars will be teaming up with the undisputed heavyweight champion of Modified racing this season to create the ultimate feast for the action-hungry dirt racing fan as the “Dart Iron Man Challenge” will accompany the popular USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour at each event.

The series will make its debut on Wednesday, May 26, at the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa – the first of two visits to the Mahaska County Half-Mile Monster. The next night, the series visits the Highway 3 Raceway in Allison, Iowa. The 2010 campaign will come to a close at the same two venues on Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 1-2.

USRA UNVEILS 2010 RULES FOR FOUR CLASSES

WEBSTER CITY, Iowa (Dec. 17) - On the heels of wrapping up a memorable and successful 2009 racing season, officials from the United States Racing Association (USRA) have released rules for four sanctioned divisions, effective January 1, 2010.

The changes are few, with some minor clarifications in place for all classes in 2010.

In the USRA Modified division, a handful of minor tweaks have been put in place to help maintain parity among the many different chassis and engine combinations available. Most notably, the maximum height allowed on the rear spoiler will be limited to five inches for racecars utilizing aluminum or raised runner heads other than the BRODIX Aluminum Spec Heads. The spoiler height will remain six inches for all competitors with other engine combinations.

In the popular USRA Stock Car class, adjustments in the carburetor rule are expected to be a welcome change.

"USRA Stock Cars continue to be one of the most exciting classes for dirt racing fans to watch," said USRA president Todd Staley. "The minor changes we've put in place will allow the Stock Cars to maintain the on-track action at a maximum and costs to a minimum while giving drivers some freedom of choice in what they want under their hood."

Changes in the fast-growing USRA B-Mods and USRA Hobby Stocks are nearly non-existent. Clarifications to the distributor and fuel rules reflect the most noticeable differences.

Three tracks have already announced the addition of the USRA B-Mods to their weekly program in 2010: Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn.; Dodge County Speedway in Kasson, Minn.; and the Mississippi Thunder Speedway in Fountain City, Wis.

Points will be awarded to drivers competing in the American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series in sanctioned events held from March 5 through Oct. 31, 2010.

Complete rules can be found on the USRA website at www.usraracing.com.

The USRA currently sanctions weekly racing at 20 speedways in six states — Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Missouri — plus special events at another 12 facilities. More than 1,800 drivers competed in USRA-sanctioned events during the 2009 season.

The United States Racing Association (USRA) was formed with a mission of accomplishing three goals: increased driver participation, increased attendance and increased sponsorship for each USRA-sanctioned racetrack. The USRA serves as a marketing partner with the bottom line of our sanctioned tracks at interest, and we are committed to maintaining guidelines to make racing affordable and fun for all racers, yet exciting and competitive for fans. The USRA is committed to providing a combination of cost-effective rules for competitors in weekly auto racing and effective marketing strategies to assist in the growth and popularity of the tracks at which they compete.
