Gharst puts whoopin’ on Sprint Invader field at Davenport
by Mike McGuire
DAVENPORT, Ia. (September 28, 2012) – The 2012 racing
season came to an end Friday night at the Davenport Speedway. The finale was
highlighted by the Brockway Mechanical & Roofing Sprint Invaders competing
in the “East/West Clash of the Best”. Also racing were IMCA Late Models and
4-Stocks.
Decatur, Illinois racer Kaley Gharst found the
Davenport half-mile to his liking as he led every lap of the Sprint Invader
main. The 20-lap feature got off to a rocky start as the race was
red-flagged twice in the first two laps.
Once the race stayed green, Gharst drove away from the
field. Kaley lapped all but the second, third, and fourth place drivers. He
had nearly three-quarters of a lap lead, when the checkers flew.
Dustin Selvage finished a distant second, with Brett
Triplett third, and Jordan Goldsberry fourth. Russ Hall finished fifth, one
lap down.
Sprint Invader heat wins went to Kaley Gharst, Jordan
Goldsberry, and Dustin Selvage. Gharst also picked up a win in the Shake-up
Dash.
In Late Model action, Spencer Diercks captured his
first-ever feature win. Diercks led every circuit of the 25-lap main, which
went green, white , checkered. Jeremiah Hurst started fourth and worked his
way to a second place finish. Fred Remley ran top five all race long before
taking third. Marty Diercks and Tommy Elston completed the top five. Spencer
Diercks also won the Late Model heat race.
A strong field of 4-Stocks were on hand for the event.
Brad Chandler made the trip to Davenport pay off , as he took home the
$1,000 top prize. Chandler took the lead from Jake Ellithorpe on lap three
of the 15-lap feature. Chandler held the lead through a lap seven restart
and led the rest of the way to the checkers. Ricky Kay started eighth and
had a strong run to second. Ryan Walker finished third, with Brian Klein
fourth, and Aaron Hitt fifth.
The awards banquet for the Davenport Speedway will be

Aikey takes All-Star Classic and Deery Crown
by Mike McGuire
DAVENPORT, Ia. (September 22, 2012) – All eyes at the All-Star classic
were on the battle for the Deery Brothers championship, between Jeff Aikey
of Waterloo, and Andy Eckrich of Oxford. The series’ two top point-getters
did not disappoint the crowd.
Justin Kay jumped out to the early lead of the 40-lap main. Aikey
swiped the lead on lap 3 and would hold the top spot until his closest rival
for the title, Andy Eckrich took the lead on lap 13. Eckrich held the lead
until Aikey zipped by on lap 33, and drove away for the win.
Aikey’s win was his fifth Deery Brothers Summer Series feature at the
Davenport Speedway. The victory also put an exclamation point on his seventh
Deery Brothers championship.
Andy Eckrich would finish second in the race and the point standings.
Brian Harris, driving the Richard Realty #15, took third. Ray Guss Jr., was
fourth and Denny Eckrich fifth.
Harris, Denny Eckrich, Stephan Kammerer, and Guss were heat winners.
Mike Garland and Nate Bueseling won the B-Mains.
Davenport’s version of “the BIG ONE” came on a lap 17 restart, when at
least six cars piled up in turn four. No one was seriously hurt.
Bob Dominacki emerged victorious in the IMCA Modified feature.
Dominacki used the high side of the half-mile track to secure the win.
Ron Barker snatched the lead from the pole position and led laps one
through twelve. Mark Verbeck grabbed the lead after a lap 13 restart, but
his lead would be short-lived. Dominacki took the lead on lap 15, with
Verbeck bringing out the caution a lap later, when he found the turn four
wall.
Dominacki led the remaining laps for the win. Barker finished a close
second. Rich Smith ran top five all race long, before taking third. Kelly
Meyer finished fourth after starting in the last row. Eric Barnes rounded
out the top five.
In Street Stock action, Jeremy Marquette proved he could get it done
on the half-mile as well as the quarter. Marquette started mid-pack and made
his way into the lead by lap 5. Marquette led the rest of the way to the
checkers. Dwaine Hasson stayed within striking distance, but could not make
a bid for the lead. Chuck Fox finished a solid third with David Brandies
fourth, and Andrew Burk completing the top five.
Shaun Slaughter made his visit to the Davenport Speedway pay off with
a win in the 4-Stock feature. Slaughter started on the pole and led every
lap of the race. Joe Zrostlik started directly behind Slaughter and would
finish the same. Aaron Hitt took third. Nick Bennett came from well back in
the field to take fourth with Josh Starr fifth.
Next Friday, September 28th, will be the final race of the 2012 season
at the Davenport Speedway. The featured attraction will be the Brockway
Roofing & Mechanical Sprint Invaders. Also racing will be 4-Stocks and
IMCA-style Late Models. All races will be on the half-mile oval.

Dominacki captures Cheater Race at Davenport
by Mike McGuire
DAVENPORT, Ia. (September 14, 2012) – Friday was a night of high speed
and big –time crashes as the Davenport Speedway hosted its first-ever Night
of Destruction. Cheater Races were held for the modifieds, street stocks,
and 4-stocks. The stock car racing action was followed by the collision–fest
known as the Trailer Race.
Jeremy Marquette had the fastest Street Stock car all season at
Davenport. With some extra sheet metal and plexi-glass, he was even faster.
Marquette blistered the field on his way to the checkered flag. Jeremy
started sixth and was well into the lead by lap three.
Once Marquette was in the lead, the battle was for second. Mitch
Schmitz emerged from the pack for second, with Dwaine Hasson finishing
third. Tony VonDresky took fourth and Rob Henry fifth.
The ‘Dominator’ Bob Dominacki showed once again why he is the king of
the Cheater Races. Dominacki grabbed the lead on lap two of the modified
feature and never looked back. By the time the checkers fell, Bob had lapped
all but the second and third place cars.
Justin Veloz had a good run to finish second, with Brian Bushong
third. Brad Tyler was the first of the lap down cars in fourth, while Bruce
Fosdyck Sr. finished fifth.
Aaron Hitt added a Cheater Race victory to his growing list of
accomplishments in the 4-Stock class this year. Hitt jumped out to the lead
on lap one, but had to hold off a charging Andy Wagener to take the win.
Wagener, who had to recover from a first lap incident, finished a strong
second. Andy Loy, Kyle Rhoads, and Zach Dahl completed the top five.
Cars, trucks, and vans pulling trailers of all shapes and sizes went
all out for the enthusiastic crowd in the Trailer Race. When the carnage was
over, Marty Smith was the winner. Ray Brown won the fan vote for the best
decorated entry, for his “Support the Troops” scheme.
Racing at the Davenport Speedway, continues next Saturday night (Sept.
22) with the running of the All-Star Classic. The event will be held on the
half-mile oval and features the season finale of the Deery Brothers Summer
Series. Also racing will be IMCA-style Modifieds, Street Stocks, and
4-Stocks.

Guss wins feature, Murphy wins track title at Davenport
by Mike McGuire
DAVENPORT, Ia. (August 24, 2012) – Friday was Season Championship
Night at the Davenport Speedway. With the Season Championships on the line,
the point leader in each class was offered the Back Row Challenge, where a
win would pay double the prize money.
The Petersen Plumbing & Heating IMCA Late Model feature went green,
white, checkered with Ray Guss Jr. leading all but the very first lap. That
lap was led by point leader and pole sitter Mike Murphy Jr.
Guss started the race on the high side and was closely followed by
Murphy. When the high groove started to wear out, Guss dropped to the bottom
and began to pull away from Murphy.
As Guss was extending his lead, Andy Nezworski also used the bottom of
the racetrack to pass Murphy and move into second. Guss took the checkers
more than a straightaway ahead of Nezworski in second. The win was the
second of the season for Guss.
Murphy’s third place finish was more than enough to guarantee him the
track title over Guss. Mike Zemo Jr. finished fourth, with Justin Kay edging
out Matt Ryan for fifth.
Late model heats went to Zemo, LeRoy Brenner, and Joe Ross.
The only driver to accept the Back Row Challenge was EMS IMCA Modified
point leader Doug Crampton, although he didn’t go there voluntarily.
Crampton’s racecar developed mechanical woes during his heat race. Doug
borrowed Jason Bahr’s mod to start the feature and was forced to start in
the rear.
At the front of the pack, Kelly Meyer rocketed out front to lead lap
one. The caution flag came out on lap two. After the restart, Bob Dominacki,
riding the high side, raced into the lead. Dominacki would lead until lap
19.
In heavy lapped traffic, Meyer dropped to the bottom and reeled in the
leader. Coming to the white flag, Meyer retook the lead.
At the finish, it was Meyer winning his second straight feature.
Dominacki held on for second. Thad Wilson took third, with Dean McGee and
Brian Bushong completing the top five. Crampton finished eighth and captured
the modified track championship.
Jeremy Marquette led all fifteen laps of the Koehler Electric Street
Stock feature. The victory was his fourth of the season and locked down his
third Street Stock track championship. RJ Gonzales was best of the rest,
finishing second, ahead of Jerry Pratt. Kevin Dickey and Keith Blum rounded
out the top five.
Aaron Hitt was looking to put an exclamation point on his championship
season in the Roto-Rooter 4 Stock main. Hitt started on the pole and led the
first seven laps. A caution on lap eight allow the field to pull up to his
rear bumper for the restart.
The restart gave Andy Loy a chance to pass Hitt on the bottom of the
racetrack. Loy would lead the remaining laps and capture his first feature
win at Davenport. Gage Neal and Jake Ellithorpe would also pass Hitt and
finish second and third respectively. Hitt crossed the stripe in fourth and
sealed his championship. Nick Bennett finished fifth.
Post-season racing action at the Davenport Speedway begins on Friday,
Sept. 7th. The Brockway Mechanical & Roofing Sprint Invaders come to town
for some winged sprint car action on the historic Davenport half-mile track.
Also racing will be IMCA Late Models and 4-Stocks.

Davenport Speedway readies for Season Championship night
DAVENPORT, Iowa (August 22, 2012) – The Davenport Speedway will be looking
to hand out the 2012 track championship titles this Friday, August 24th.
Champions will be crowned in all four weekly classes.
In the Petersen Plumbing & Heating IMCA Late Model division, we will
likely see a changing of the guard. Mike Murphy Jr., of Colona, Ill., needs
to finish 15th or better in this Friday’s race to guarantee the track
championship. Three-time defending track champion Ray Guss Jr. (Milan,
Ill.), trails Murphy by 18 points, heading into the season finale. Matt Ryan
is a distant third in points, but leads fourth place Nate Bueseling of
Silvis, 14 points.
Doug Crampton has emerged from the pack in the Engineering Maintenance
Service IMCA Modifieds to lead the point standings. Crampton has an 18 point
lead over second place Kelly Meyer. Meyer will likely be looking over his
shoulder as he holds only a one point advantage over third place Thad Wilson
and a two point margin over fourth place Mitch Morris.
The Koehler Electric Street Stock class has once again been dominated
by defending track champion Jeremy Marquette of Davenport. Marquette needs
only to start his heat and feature to win the title. Emily Gade is second in
points and has three feature wins. Dwaine Hasson is third in points, with
Kevin Dickey fourth.
In the Roto-Rooter 4 Stock class, point leader, Aaron Hitt holds a ten
point lead headed into the Season Championships. Second place Jake
Ellithorpe is eleven markers ahead of third place Gage Neal.
The Davenport Speedway is located at the Mississippi Valley
Fairgrounds, on West Locust Street, in Davenport. Pit gates at The Davenport
Speedway open at 4:00 p.m., with the grandstand opening at 5:30. Hot laps

post-season schedule
DAVENPORT, Ia. (August 20, 2012) – High speed stock car racing action
will continue well after this Friday’s Season Championships at the Davenport
Speedway.
Post-season racing action at the Davenport Speedway begins on Friday,
Sept. 7th, when the Brockway Mechanical & Roofing Sprint Invaders come to
town. The 360 cubic inch winged sprint car warriors will compete in the
“East/West Clash of the Best” on the historic Davenport half-mile oval.

Davenport since 2006, and is the only sprint car race in the Quad Cities in
2012. Also competing on the half-mile will be 4-stocks and IMCA-style Late
Models. Both of those features will pay $1,000-to-win.
The racing action takes a turn for the weird on Friday, Sept. 14th,
with Davenport’s first-ever Night of Destruction. The Night of Destruction
features “Cheater Races” for the regular weekly classes and the automotive
carnage of the “Trailer Race”.

2012. The All-Star Classic, on Saturday, Sept. 22nd, is highlighted by the
Deery Brothers Summer Series finale. Non-sanctioned IMCA Modifieds, Street

MURPHY SCORES FOURTH LM WIN AT DAVENPORT
by Mike McGuire
DAVENPORT, Ia. (August 17, 2012) – Friday was Back to School Kid’s
Night at the Davenport Speedway, sponsored by Dirt Racer Magazine and Chris
Damitz Photography. With the regular season quickly winding down, Friday’s
racing action was intense.
Mike Murphy Jr. captured feature win number four in the Petersen
Plumbing & Heating IMCA Late Model feature. Murphy started 12th, but had
made his way to the lead by lap 10. The win helped Murphy extend his point
lead in the late model class.
Justin Kay was gaining ground on Murphy, but would have to settle for
second. Andy Nezworski was in and out of the top five, before finishing
third. Doug Nigh came on strong late in the race to take fourth, just ahead
of Nate Bueseling. Muphy, Kay, and Nezworski won the late model heats.
In EMS IMCA Modified action, Kelly Meyer won a frantic 20-lap feature
race. Meyer started the race in seventh position and was one of four
different drivers to lead, over the first five laps.
The race was halted briefly for a red flag, as Greg Wilson’s car was
went tumbling down to turn one. Greg exited the battered racecar, without
serious injury.
When racing resumed, Meyer stayed in front, and would lead to the
checkers. The win was Meyers’s first on the season at Davenport.
Doug Crampton prevailed over Mitch Morris to finish second at the
stripe. Joe Beal recovered from being involved in a mid-race caution to take
fourth, while John Ahlers just barely held off Matt Stein for fifth.
Emily Gade made it back-to-back feature wins in the Koehler Electric
Street Stock division. Gade took the lead from Kevin Dickey on lap two of
the fifteen lap main and led the rest of the way to the checkers. The
victory was her third of the season.
Jeremy Marquette started tenth and had moved up to second by the end
of lap four, but never got close enough to the leader to mount a challenge.
Dwaine Hasson started third and finished third. Keith Blum and Chris
Lawrence completed the top five.
In the Roto Rooter 4-Stocks, the Hitt just keeps on a coming. Aaron
Hitt backed up his 4-Stock 50 win, with his second points win of the season.
Hitt stole the lead from Andy Loy on lap three, en route to the victory.
Jake Ellithorpe finished second. Gage Neal, Jake Morris, and Kyle Rhoads
rounded out the top five.
Next Friday, August 24th, is Season Championship night at the
Davenport Speedway. Track champions will be crowned in all four weekly
classes.

Hitt takes Davenport cash by inches
by Mike McGuire
DAVENPORT, Ia. (August 10, 2012) – Aaron Hitt of Davenport is $2,000
richer after his win in the 4-Stock 50 at the Davenport Speedway. The event
marked the return of stock car racing action to the racetrack after a two
week break for the Mississippi Valley Fair.
Hitt started the 50-lapper on the outside pole and shot out to the
early lead. Hitt held a comfortable lead until the caution flag flew with 34
laps complete. Hitt led one lap after the restart, before giving way to
Steve Miedke of Shellsburg, Iowa. Miedke led laps 36 through 48, while Hitt
used a slightly higher line, gaining back ground on the leader.
The two leaders were side-by-side the final two laps, with third place
Mike Morrow close behind.
Hitt had a little more momentum coming out of turn four on the final
lap and won by about a foot and a half. Miedke, who had to qualify through
the semi-feature, would have to settle for second. Morrow finished third,
with 15th place starter Joe Zrostlik taking fourth. Zach Dahl rounded out
the top five.
Forty 4-Stocks were on hand for the event. Heat race wins went to
Steven Phillips, Mitch Bielenberg, Tristin Clark, and Jake Montoya.
Semi-features were won by Miedke and Gene Potter.
Andy Nezworski dominated the Petersen Plumbing & Heating IMCA Late
Model feature. Nezworski rocketed out in front and used the low groove to
cruise to the win. A handful of drivers held the second spot throughout the
race, with the position going to Matt Ryan at the finish. Justin Kay
finished third, just ahead of Doug Nigh. Ray Guss Jr., took fifth.
Nezworski, Nigh, and Kay won the late model heats.
With the season winding down the racing was intense in the EMS IMCA
Modified feature. At the midway point, race leader Jake Bowman was in a
battle for the lead, with Matt Stein and Thad Wilson. On lap 14 the caution
came out as Wilson and Bowman made contact, with Bowman spinning out in
front of the flagstand. Both drivers were sent to the rear. On the following
lap, Bowman returned the favor, sending Wilson spinning into the infield.
Stein stayed clear of the first incident and would lead the remaining
laps to score his first victory of the season at Davenport. Mitch Morris
moved in to finish a close second. Doug Crampton finished third, with Dean
McGee fourth and Tony VonDresky fifth.
Emily Gade captured her second feature win on the season in the
Koehler Electric Street Stock main. Emily took the lead from Bryan Ritter on
lap seven of the 15-lapper and held on to take the win. Jeremy Marquette
finished second with Scott Griffin third. RJ Gonzales and Dwaine Hasson
completed the top five.
Next Friday, August 17th, is the final Kid’s Night of the 2012 season
at the Davenport Speedway. Children 12 and under will be admitted free with
a paid adult.

Griffin takes two Davenport Street Stock wins
by Mike McGuire
DAVENPORT, Ia. (July 20, 2012) – With two make-up features, a full
racing program, and the Midwest Jalopies, it surely was a full night of
racing at the Davenport Speedway.
The evening started with the Street Stock make-up feature from June
29th. The race restarted with four laps complete and Scott Griffin leading
the way. Griffin would lead the remaining laps and take his first victory of
the year. It would not be his last.
Jeremy Marquette got close to the leader, but would have to settle for
second. Keith Blum ran a strong third, with Joe Bonney fourth and Josh Starr
fifth.
The IMCA Late Model make-up feature was next. Davenport racer Jeff
Stevens used the outside pole and a still tacky track to his advantage as he
led all 25 laps for the win. Ray Guss Jr., came from the eighth starting
spot to finish second. Joe Ross finished third, just ahead of Stephan
Kammerer and Andy Nezworski.
When it came to this Friday’s racing program, each class seemed to
have a dominant car. In the EMS IMCA Modifieds, it was ‘the Dominator’ Bob
Dominacki. Bob started seventh, and had the lead by the end of lap two.
Dominacki held the top spot through five cautions and all the way to the
checkers.
A dandy battle for second eventually went to Mitch Morris, over Thad
Wilson. Brian Bushong ran in the top five all race long and finished fourth.
Doug Crampton rounded out the top five.
The Roto-Rooter 4 Stock main saw Mitch Bielenberg pick up his third
feature win of the point season. Bielenberg grabbed the lead from Kyle
Rhoads on lap three, en route to the win. Jake Ellithorpe and Ricky Kay both
started in the fourth row and would finish second and third respectively.
Gage Neal finished fourth with Aaron Hitt completing the first five.
Scott Griffin took up where he left off in the Koehler Electric Street
Stocks. Griffin started third, but would lead all fifteen laps for his
second feature win of the night. Emily Gade finished second, a strightaway
behind Griffin. Jeremy Marquette took third, with Dwaine Hasson fourth, and
Keith Blum fifth.
The final race of the evening was the Petersen Plumbing & Heating IMCA
Late Model main. Doug Nigh jumped to the early lead from the pole. After a
lap nine restart, Ray Guss Jr. found enough grip on the high side to take
the lead away from Nigh. That grip went away quickly and Nigh regained the
lead on lap 16. The ‘Maquoketa Missile’ would lead the rest of the way to
the checkers, for his first win of the year at Davenport.
Guss held on for second, with Mike Murphy Jr. third. Matt Ryan took
fourth, with Mike Zemo Jr. fifth.
The Midwest Jalopies made their final Davenport Speedway appearance of
the 2012 season. Doug Picray won the feature. Bob Mingst finished second,
with Dennis Blunt third.
The Davenport Speedway will be on hiatus for the next two Fridays, due
to the Mississippi Valley Fair. Stock car racing action returns to the
quarter-mile dirt oval on Friday August 10th, with the main attraction being
the 4-Stock 50, paying $2,000 to the winner.

MARQUETTE SCORES BIG CASH AT DAVENPORT
Wilson hits daily double
by Mike McGuire
DAVENPORT, Ia. (July 13, 2012) – Friday the 13th was a busy night of
racing at the Davenport Speedway sponsored by JC Dubil. The highlight of the
evening was the Street Stock 50, which paid $2,000 to win. A strong field of
street Stocks were on hand for the main event and they did not disappoint
the crowd. When the checkered flag fell, there was a familiar face in
victory lane, Jeremy Marquette of Davenport.
Marquette showed why he is the current point leader and defending
track champion at the Davenport Speedway. Marquette started on the outside
pole and immediately jumped out to the early race lead. Jeremy would hold
the top spot through the first seven laps.
Emily Gade worked her way through the top five, taking the lead on lap
eight. Marquette returned the favor on lap twenty, as the leaders got mired
in lapped traffic. Marquette began to stretch out the lead as the race went
caution-free through the thirty-five laps. Jeremy would lead the remaining
laps and take the biggest payday of his racing career.
Three cautions over the final 15 laps, spelled trouble for Gade. She
lost spots on the first two restarts, before bringing out the third yellow
for a spin in turn one. She would finish sixth, the last car on the lead
lap.
The final laps saw a frantic battle for second between RJ Gonzales,
Tim Current and Scott Griffin. Griffin would take the spot, with Current
third, and Gonzales fourth. Jed Holland carried a broken left front to a
fifth place finish.
Marquette, Gonzales, and Dwaine Hasson won heat races with Current and
Jerry Pratt winning the semi-features.
There was a regular racing program for the other three weekly classes
and two make-up features that were rained out on June 29th.
First up was the 4-Stock Make-up Feature. Aaron Hitt finally broke
through for his first feature win of the season. Brandon Dahl led the race
until a pair of cautions on lap eight gave Hitt the opportunity he needed
for the lead. Dahl would hold on for second, with Jake Ellithorpe third.
Zach Dahl finished fourth and Gage Neal completed the top five.
In the EMS IMCA Modifed Make-up feature, Kevin Blum looked to have the
car to be for nearly all of the twenty laps, nearly. Blum took the lead from
the pole and used the high side to lead the first thirteen laps. Thad Wilson
used the bottom and led lap fourteen. Blum came back to lead laps fifteen
through nineteen, but on the final corner his car lost power and Wilson
collected his first win at Davenport this year.
Doug Crampton came from deep in the field to take second. Mitch
Morris, John Ahlers, and Dean McGee rounded out the top five.
Stephan Kammerer picked up his first Petersen Plumbing& Heating IMCA
Late Model feature win of the season.
Kammerer took the lead from Andy Nezworski on lap four of the 25-lap
feature and used the high side to lead the rest of the way to the checkers.
Matt Ryan survived a series of lat race cautions to finish second. Ray Guss
Jr., took third, with Marty Diercks fourth, and Joe Ross fifth.
Kammerer, Guss, and Justin Kay won the late model heats.
Thad Wilson stayed perfect on the night, as he won his heat race and
dominated in Friday’s IMCA Modified main. After a couple of first lap
cautions, Wilson zipped out to the lead with Bob Dominacki in tow. The pair
would run even for three laps, before Wilson and the bottom groove would
prevail. Kelly Meyer would also use the bottom to work his way into second.
Dominacki held on for third, with Doug Crampton and Mitch Morris fourth and
fifth respectively. Wilson’s daily double made him the first modified repeat
winner at Davenport in 2012.
The final race of the evening was this week’s Roto-Rooter 4-Stock
feature. Jake Morris led lap one, with the race being red –flagged on lap
two, as Robert Hines rolled his ride. He exited the car without serious
injury.
After the restart, Morris was sandwiched between Jake Ellithorpe and
Ricky Kay as they both went for the lead.
Ellithorpe led lap three with Kay taking over on lap four. Once in the
lead, Kay drove away for his first win at Davenport this season. Ellithorpe
finished second and was followed by Zach Dahl, Morris, and Gene Potter.
Next Friday, July 20th, will be another busy one at the Davenport
Speedway. Two more make-up features (IMCA Late Model & Street Stock) will be
run along with the regular weekly program and the final 2012 appearance of
the Midwest Jalopies.

by Mike McGuire
DAVENPORT, Ia. (June 29, 2012) – Friday’s stock car racing program at
the Davenport Speedway was halted part-way through the Koehler Electric

the storms came. The Street Stock main was the first of four features to be
run.

finalized at this time. Please check our website (www.drttrak.com) for

Marquette claims Back Row Challenge money at Davenport
by Mike McGuire
DAVENPORT, Ia. (June 22, 2012) – Friday was Casey’s General Store
Mid-Season Championships at the Davenport Speedway. The evening’s racing
program featured a draw/redraw format and a Back Row Challenge for the
current point leader in each division. Two of the four point leaders, Jeremy
Marquette and Kelly Meyer, accepted the challenge and decided to start last
in the feature for a chance to win extra money.
The gamble paid off for Koehler Electric Street Stock point leader
Jeremy Marquette. Marquette started the 15-lap main in 15th position and had
moved up to third by the end of the fourth lap. He then joined a spirited
battle for the lead between Emily Gade and Scott Griffin.
Griffin would take the lead form Gade on lap eight, only to have it
taken away by a caution flag. Following the restart, Griffin would again
pass Gade for the lead. It was a lead he would have for only one lap.
Marquette zipped past Griffin for the lead and would cruise to the
win, and the Back Row Challenge money. Griffin would hold for second with
Gade crossing the stripe in third. Keith Blum and Phil Anderson closed out
the top five.
Kelly Meyer also took the Back Row Challenge in the 20-lap EMS IMCA
Modified feature. Matt Werner jumped out to the early race lead and held the
top spot to lap eight. Thad Wilson started ninth and used the bottom of the
racetrack to take the lead on lap nine.
Wilson and Bob Dominacki would then battle for lead for several laps,
before Dominacki took the point on lap 16. Dominacki went on to take his
first point win of the season, while Wilson clipped an infield tire in the
final corner and finished 12th. Werner finished second, ahead of Tony
VonDresky. Tim Arp started 15th and finished fourth, with Kelly Meyer coming
from the tail to take fifth.
Petersen Plumbing & Heating IMCA Late Model point leader, Mike Murphy
Jr., declined the Back Row Challenge and it proved to be a good decision, as
he collected his third feature win of the season. Murphy started the 25-lap,
caution-free main in the front row, on the outside of Matt Ryan. But it was
Ryan that shot out to the early lead. Ryan was under constant attack by
Murphy and Ray Guss Jr., but held the lead until lap 11.
Murphy used a higher line to get by Ryan, but couldn’t shake Guss.
Guss would take the lead on lap 17, with Murphy coming back to the point on
lap 21. Murphy and Guss would finish one-two, with Stephan Kammerer taking
third. Matt Ryan held on for fourth, with Nate Bueseling fifth.
Roto-Rooter 4 Stock leader, Aaron Hitt declined the challenge and
elected to start second. Pole sitter Tristin Clark led lap one with Hitt
grabbing the lead on lap two. Tenth place starter Jake Ellithorpe forced his
way into the lead on lap seven. Twenty-first place starter, Mitch
Bielenberg, flew through the field and would get to Ellithorpe’s rear
bumper, but would go no further.
Ellithorpe took his third win of the year, while Bielenberg settled
for second. Ricky Kay finished third, with Gage Neal and Hitt rounding out
the top five.
Racing returns to the Davenport Speedway next Friday, June 29th for
the second Kid’s Night of the season.

in the second half of the season.
The Colona, Ill., driver
has two wins and finished no worse than third in the first five races. He
also won the Deery Brothers event at Davenport in April.
Nate Bueseling is second in
late model points with defending track champion Ray Guss Jr. third. Both
drivers have one feature win.
At this point in the
season, the EMS IMCA Modified division is up for grabs. The top seven point
leaders are separated by only thirteen points, and only two of the top seven
have recorded a feature win in 2012.
Kelly Meyer leads the EMS
IMCA Modified point standings. Meyer (Big Rock, Ia.) has no victories yet
this season, but has used consistent finishes to get to the top of the
chart.
Street Stock racer, Jeremy
Marquette, leads the Koehler Electric Street Stock points. Marquette is the
defending track champion in the street stock class and has two feature wins
already this season. Dwaine Hasson and Kevin Dickey are currently tied for
second in points.
4 Stock driver, Aaron Hitt,
has yet to score a win this season, but leads the Roto-Rooter 4 Stock class.
Hitt has a comfortable lead over Gage Neal in second and Jake Ellithorpe in
third.

Davenport Speedway IMCA Modified Madness 50
rescheduled
DAVENPORT, Ia. (May 25, 2012) – The IMCA Modified
Madness 50 at the Davenport Speedway, has been postponed due to rain. The
event has been rescheduled for next Friday, June 1st.
It was déjà vu, all over again. A light, but steady
rain started falling at the Davenport Speedway just before 6p.m. Just like
last year’s IMCA Modified shootout, the rain was just enough to wash out
tonight’s racing program.
Before the event was rained out, an excellent field of
racecars were on hand for the $2,000-to-win event. Well over thirty
modifieds had already checked into the pit area.

Brenner edges out Ross for Davenport LM Checkers
DAVENPORT, Ia. (May 18, 2012) – Racing veteran Leroy
Brenner showed that he still has what it takes to get to victory lane as he
scored a nail-biter of a win in the Petersen Plumbing & Heating IMCA Late
Model feature. Brenner and Joe Ross of Thomson, Illinois, raced side by side
for nearly all of the 25 lap main which was slowed only once by caution. The
lead duo swapped the lead seven times over the course of the race, before
Brenner finally took the win.
Mike Murphy Jr. continued to build on his late model
point lead with a third place finish. Nate Beuseling took fourth, just ahead
of Ray Guss Jr., in fifth.
Late model heat wins went to Guss, Stephan Kammerer,
and Marty Diercks.
John Ahlers captured his first feature win of the
season in the EMS IMCA Modified division. Todd Dykema scored his best finish
of the season in second, with Brian Webb coming home in third. Dean McGee
and Doug Crampton rounded out the top five.
Recent high school graduate, Emily Gade chalked up one
in the win column in the Koehler Electric Street Stocks. Emily used a good
starting spot to top street stock point leader Jeremy Marquette for the win.
Chip Kohl, Cary Brown, and Keith Blum were third through fifth respectively.
In Roto-Rooter 4-Stock action, Jake Ellithorpe took the
checkers. The victory was Jake’s first at Davenport this year. Aaron Hitt
finished second for the second straight week. Steven Phillips was third with
Gage Neal fourth, and Steve Boyle fifth.
Through the first three point races of the 2012 season
at the Davenport Speedway, there have not been any repeat winners in any of
the four weekly classes.
Friday was School’s Out- Kid’s Night with a special
appearance eby the Midwest Jalopies. More than a dozen coupes were on hand
for a little racing nostalgia. Rodney Haack took the feature win with Tim
Bader and Bob Mingst completing the top three.

Mike Murphy Jr., driver of the yellow #14 IMCA Late Model, filled the
bill. After a couple attempts to start the race failed, Murphy shot out to
the lead from his third place starting position to the lead, on the opening
lap. Much like Mike’s Deery Brothers victory at Davenport last month, Murphy
would lead every lap of the feature.
Matt Ryan stayed in the top four all race long and made a charge to
finish second. Stephan Kammerer made his way to second, before coming home
third. Andy Nezworski ran a solid fourth, with Justin Kay fifth.
Petersen Plumbing & Heating IMCA Late Model heat race wins went to
Murphy, Kammerer, and Mike Garland.
Doug Crampton won a caution-filled EMS IMCA Modified main. Brian Webb
led the first two laps of the race before the cautions started flying. After
four tries to restart the race, Crampton shot out in front of the field and
led the rest of the way to the checkers.
Thad Wilson emerged from the pack to finish second. Mitch Morris
started 14th and worked his way up to take third. Kelly Meyer and Joe Beal
were both involved in early yellows, but came back to finish fourth and
fifth respectively.
Jeremy Marquette powered his way back into the winner’s circle, in the
Koehler Electric Street Stock feature. Dwaine Hasson jumped out to an early
lead in the race and held it through a series of cautions. By lap six,
Marquette was battling Hasson for the lead. The pair would swap the lead
back and forth for a couple laps, before Marquette would take the lead for
good.
Hasson would hang on to finish second. Cary Brown, Kevin Dickey, and
Josh Neal completed the top five, in that order.
Andy Wagener was at the top of the class in the Roto-Rooter 4-Stock
division. Wagener took the lead on lap four, en route to his first victory
at Davenport this season. Nick Bennett fought to hold off Aaron Hitt and
finish second. Hitt was third and was followed to the finish line by Eric
Stogdell and Ross Neal.
Next Friday, May 18th is School’s Out Kid’s Night, with a featured
appearance by the Midwest Jalopies.

DAVENPORT
SPEEDWAY
by Mike McGuire
DAVENPORT, Ia. (May 4, 2012) – Davenport Speedway finally managed to
get the Koehler Electric Season Opener in the books. On what turned out to
be an excellent night for racing, a huge field of cars was on hand,
including thirty IMCA Modifieds.
Nate Bueseling squeezed out a win in the IMCA Late Model feature.
Bueseling didn’t take the lead of the 25-lap main until the white flag, when
he edged past early race leader Mike Garland. Mike Murphy Jr. also passed
Garland on the final lap to take second. Justin Kay and Matt Ryan rounded
out the top five.
Ray Guss Jr., Andy Eckrich, and Chuck Hanna were late model heat
winners.
Joe Beal made his first 2012 trip to Davenport’s victory lane in IMCA
Modified main. After starting sixth, Beal took the lead on lap 13, from Bob
Dominacki. Domiancki would fall out of the race a couple laps later. Dan
Chapman ran in the top three for the entire race and finished second. Kelly
Meyer came from a fifth row start and took third.
The big mover of the race was Jake Waterman. Waterman started 19th in
the field of twenty cars and finished fourth. Mark Schulte was fifth.
Meyer, Schulte, and Jason Bahrs won the mod heats. Doug Crampton and
Matt Stein won the two consi’s.
Chip Kohl of Marion, Ia., pulled out the win in a wild Street Stock
feature. Dwaine Hasson jumped out to the early race lead and held the top
spot until lap nine. Jeremy Marquette stole the lead from Hasson and
appeared to be headed for victory until an incident on lap 13, brought out
the caution. That caution saw nearly half of the top ten cars go to the back
or the pits.
When racing resumed, Kohl had the lead and a couple laps later, the
win. Nate Yoerger finished second, and ahead of Dan Mohr, Donnie Louck, and
Jerry Miles.
Mitch Bielenberg is perfect in 2012 at the Davenport Speedway.
Bielenberg won Friday’s 4-Stock main and also two weeks ago at the Deery
Brothers special.
Aaron Hitt took the race lead after starting on the pole. On lap six,
Bielenberg, who started mid-pack roared into the lead. Mitch would cruise to
victory lane with Hitt coming home second. Tristin Clark had a strong run in
third. Jake Montoya and Lucas Short were fourth and fifth respectively.
Weekly racing action continues next Friday, May 11th, at the Davenport
Speedway. Hotlaps are at 6:30pm, with racing at 7:00pm.

Murphy wins frosty Deery race at Davenport
by Mike McGuire
DAVENPORT, Ia. (April 20, 2012) – With the temperature dipping into
the low 40’s by night’s end, the stock car racing was red hot at the
Davenport Speedway Friday night. When the final checkered flag had flown,
Colona, Illinois’ Mike Murphy Jr., was the racer in victory lane.
Despite the chilly weather, forty IMCA Late Models were on hand for
the Deery Brothers Summer Series event on the Davenport quarter-mile, dirt
oval.
Murphy started on the outside pole, blasted away from the pack, and
led all forty laps of the Deery feature. After a lap four caution which
bunched the field up to his bumper, Murphy would again put distance between
himself and the field . For Murphy, the win was his second in three Deery
series races in 2012.
Justin Kay started sixth and slowly made his way up to second, where
he would finish. Denny Eckrich fought his from the eleventh starting
position, to third, finishing more than a straightaway behind the winner.
Dan Shelliam started on the pole and fell back to fifth, before overtaking
Andy Eckrich late in the race for fourth. Andy Eckrich and Mark Burgtorf
rounded out the top six.
IMCA Late Model heat race wins went to Murphy, Kay, Tom Darbyshire,
and Charlie McKenna. Burgtorf and Bryan Klein won the B-Mains.
Jake Waterman blistered the field in the IMCA Modified main. Waterman
launched into the lead early on and was never challenged. Jake Bowman made
his way through the pack and with a late surge, scored a second place
finish. Ray Cox Jr. was in the top three all race long, finishing third.
Casey Voss and Brian Webb were both involved in early race cautions and a
final turn tussle, before finishing fourth and fifth respectively.
Jeremy Marquette paid another visit to victory lane in the Street
Stock feature. Marquette used a lap 6 restart to get by early race leader
Emily Gade. Once in the lead Jeremy would cruise to an easy win. Gade would
finish a strong second, with Kevin Dickey, Cary Brown, and Chris Lawrence
rounding out the top five.
Mitch Bielenberg used lapped car as a pick, to take the lead of the
4-Stock feature. The move allowed Mitch to go from third to first in one
lap, for the win. Andy Wagener, had led most of the race, but would have to
settle for the runner-up finish. Ross Neal took third.
Next Friday, April 27th, will be Koehler Electric Season Opener night
at the Davenport Speedway.
