Three Separate Events Equals Three Different Winners in ULMA Weekly Action!

The 2012 race season rolled on last weekend and now, races eight, nine, and ten are in the books for the Lucas Cattle Company ULMA late models. Over the weekend at three separate tracks, three different winners claimed wins in weekly race action. Friday night at Callaway drew 18 late models in which Bob Test claimed his first win of the year. Also on Friday, Valley Speedway drew 9 late models for Brett Wood’s first ULMA victory of the season. The strong car counts at Lucas Oil Speedway continued again this past Saturday as Jason Russell claimed his association-leading third victory of the year against a field of 24 competitors.

Eighteen late models were on hand at Callaway Raceway Friday night in Fulton, Missouri, as the track completed a night of racing without a weather threat. In fact, going back to the first ULMA-sanctioned event of the year at Callaway, this past weekend marked just the third time the track hosted drivers and fans for one of their weekly programs. For Jefferson City driver Bob Test, it had been since last September at Central Missouri Speedway in Warrensburg that he last drove into victory lane to claim his lone victory of the year. This season, Test added his name to the list of yearly winners much earlier with his latest victory. Jason Russell started off his weekend solidly by claiming the runner-up spot ahead of Brandon Imhoff in third. Trace Westling, Chris Cox, Darren Turner, and Zeke Langley also raced their way to top-ten finishes.  Check out the track online at www.callawayraceways.com; another Friday race program is scheduled this weekend, May 18.

Although there were just nine cars on hand for ULMA’s second appearance at Valley Speedway in Grain Valley, Missouri this past Friday, it didn’t make much difference in the action and for the fans as the bipartisan fans in the stands were on their feet cheering for their favorite drivers even before the main event got underway. Chris Hawkins once again made the long haul to Grain Valley from his Neosho, Missouri home base in search of his second feature win of the year at the track and third sanctioned win over all. After the heat race concluded, it looked as though Hawkins’ goal might be attained, that is until Brett Wood of Warrensburg powered his way to the front with a thrilling high-side move to grab the top spot from Hawkins to begin the main event.

The first 14 laps of the feature race went caution free with Jason Bodenhamer, Chris Hawkins, and Jimmy Morris all gunning for increased positions. A near miss for Wood occurred on lap 14 when the car of Nathan Cates slowed down the backstretch with mechanical troubles with Wood making slight contact with Cates. Wood did not incur race-ending damage as he maintained his top position once the race resumed. Wood again used his straightaway power to place himself out front by five car lengths over the furious battle for second. While running in second, Hawkins drifted too high in turn four allowing Bodenhamer to make the pass and set his sights on Wood, who is Bodenhamer’s Brother-in-Law, to go for the win.

This same scenario has played out on a few occasions over the years in ULMA action with Bodenhamer having the edge over Wood in victories and for awhile it looked like once again Bodenhamer would come out on top. Late in the event, Wood’s car developed a wicked push and his closest competitors rapidly closed in as his lead dwindled to a half-car length. As Wood’s struggles continued, Bodenhamer made his move to the inside for the lead with one lap remaining with Hawkins and Morris waiting in the wings ready to pounce. Wood used sheer horsepower and driving determination down the straights and kept all challengers at bay to claim his first win of the young season. Bodenhamer finished in second, in front of Hawkins, Morris, Joe Walkenhorst, Steve Clancy, Cates, and Gary Billings, Jr.

It’s always great to see strong fan support like what we seen Friday night at Valley Speedway for the late models, a class that is not even the top billed class of the night. ULMA and Valley have kept late model racing alive for fans in the greater Kansas City metro this year, we hope the drivers geographically located in this area will bring their cars out and participate. The next ULMA appearance at Valley Speedway takes place during the Memorial Day weekend on Friday, May 25th. For complete details and schedule of events, visit the track online at www.valleyspeedway.com.

Another solid lineup of drivers challenged the Lucas Oil Speedway Saturday night on a track surface that was completely different than the first two weekly shows this year. By the time heat races rolled out, the track was showing signs of dry-slick conditions at least three lanes wide from the bottom of the track up to setup for the main event. Tommy Cordray, R.D. Peterson and Jeremy Kelley claimed their respective heat races but it was a hard-charging Jason Russell who garnered the pole position for the night’s late model main event by virtue of passing points earned from his heat race.

Russell took center stage at the beginning of the race, sometimes building up an eight-car advantage over his closest pursuer. By lap five, fifth-starting Rylan Long looked as though he could challenge for the win; however, on lap six, he ran too high entering turn one and ultimately spun while trying to exit turn two and brought out the first caution period of the race. Russell again took command once the race resumed with Kelley, Brandon Imhoff, Cordray, and Larry Jones keeping pace. The race stayed under green-flag conditions until a lap 17 spin by Todd McCoin brought out the second yellow flag of the night. Unfortunately, on the restart, the cars of Chris Morelock and Harlen Kennedy hooked together down the back straight with many cars taking evasive action to miss the stalled pair of cars right in the middle of the track. While most cars managed to miss the incident, Lane Ehlert was unable to avoid contact as his night came to a close with heavy damage to his car.

At the beginning of the night, drivers in all divisions were told they would have one minute per lap and if the races drew in on the time limit they would be stopped short of the originally scheduled distance. After the Ehlert car was hauled away, drivers again smashed the loud pedal only to be slowed again, this time in turn four as eighth-running Jake Williams spun, ending his bid for a solid top-ten finish. Shortly after the Williams incident, Chris Morelock slowed on the track and was unable to exit drawing yet another caution period. With 18 cars still running, the white flag flew on lap 17 as the time limit ran out to cut the race by two laps. Russell went on to claim his first win at the speedway this season with Kelley again solidly inside the top three. Brandon Imhoff, Jones, Cordray, Justin Russell, Evan Hubert, Long and Brett Wood also finished inside the top ten. The track announced Saturday night that the June 23rd date at the speedway will no longer include late models. For all the latest information and updated schedule for the speedway, visit www.lucasoilspeedway.com. Another weekly show is on tap at this speedway this Saturday, May 19.

ULMA is pleased to announce the dates for this year’s annual ‘Triple Crown Shootout’ in which drivers will compete in a three-race mini points-earning series for additional prize money. Competing drivers have the following race options to garner three starts out of the four available races from Friday to Sunday:  Friday, June 29th at Callaway Raceway or Friday, June 29th at Valley Speedway, Saturday, June 30th at Lucas Oil Speedway, with the finale taking place on Sunday, July 1st at Double X Speedway in California, Mo. The July stop at Double X is sponsored by Bonecutter Body Shop of California. Drivers not familiar with the tiny Double X Speedway will have a chance to get the feel of the track as ULMA will hold a points-earning event at the track on Sunday, June 17th to build up to the Triple Crown Shootout two weeks later. Complete details and entry forms will be made available in the coming days on ULMA’s official website.

On Saturday, June 2, drivers will have another opportunity to earn one of two ULMA provisional starting positions during the MLRA late model race at LA Raceway in LaMonte, Missouri. Only drivers competing in ULMA-legal cars are eligible for the provisional starting positions. Drivers who are ULMA members will earn association points for their participation during the race program in the same manner as a regularly sanctioned ULMA race.

Two Stops at Double X Speedway Added to ULMA Season Schedule!

Sam Stoecklin
ULMA Public Relations
May 9, 2012

For the second consecutive year, the Lucas Cattle Company ULMA Late Models will make their way to California … California, Missouri that is for a pair of point’s-earning races at the close confines of Kyle and Carol Wirts’ beloved Double X Speedway. The first appearance takes place on Sunday, June 17th as a precursor to the annual Triple Crown Shootout, which rolls into the track on Sunday, July 1st.

The July stop at Double X, sponsored by Bonecutter Body Shop of California is locked in as one of four shootout events in which drivers have the chance to earn points at ULMA-affiliated tracks in a miniseries style shootout for added money. For both of the Double X appearances, all participating drivers must be ULMA members. For the June race there will be no entry fees, for the July event, officials will announce further details regarding entry fees and race dates for the Triple Crown Shootout. Last year, Brandon Imhoff dominated both appearances at the track with two convincing wins. For further details stay tuned to ULMA press releases or visit www.xxspeedway.com.

The lone ULMA-sanctioned race of last weekend was washed out at Callaway Raceway on Friday night but the track is ready to try once again this weekend to continue their season-long schedule of events. Current ULMA point leader Jason Russell has established early on that he is the man to beat at the Fulton, Missouri track and will look to hold off all challengers again this weekend when east-side racing resumes.  Check out the track online at www.callawayraceways.com.

Drivers will make their second appearance of the season this weekend at Valley Speedway in Grain Valley, Missouri for some west-side Friday night action. This is the first of eleven ‘Fast Friday’ appearances throughout the summer at the paper-clip style quarter mile track located about twenty minutes from downtown Kansas City. A few weeks back, Chris Hawkins of Neosho, Missouri edged former ULMA champion Jason Bodenhamer to pickup an early season victory. For start times, directions, and general track information visit www.valleyspeedway.com.

Weekly action concludes Saturday night at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Missouri. So far this season, large car counts have claimed track headlines along with a pair of former track champions, Tommy Cordray and Rylan Long claiming victories. Two weeks ago Rylan Long returned to form with a convincing win over a stellar field of peers.  Jeremy Kelley and Lane Ehlert have used their strong starts to the season to find their way into a close battle for the track point lead heading into this weekend; for complete race information log onto www.lucasoilspeedway.com.

Reigning Champ Rylan Long and Point Leader Jason Russell Find ULMA Victories!

Sam Stoecklin
ULMA Public Relations
May 2, 2012

CB Race Photos, Chris Bork captured these shots of Rylan Long in victory lane and Alan Westling's flip in turn one.

Lucas Cattle Company ULMA drivers returned to action last weekend at Callaway Raceway and Lucas Oil Speedway. Racing in the month of April came to a close with current point leader Jason Russell taking the victory in race number six on the year while defending ULMA champion Rylan Long claimed race number seven.

Callaway Raceway in Fulton, Missouri, was finally able to host another night of racing last Friday after two straight rain cancellations. Although the track ran its program, Mother Nature made her presence known as a hearty crowd braved the elements on a cool and windy Friday. Just seven late models competed in one heat race and a main event, which featured several cross-over maneuvers between Jason Russell and former ULMA champion Vance Wilson. Brandon Imhoff wait ran close behind the lead duo in the initial stages of the race. Russell has quickly asserted himself as a championship contender this season and it did not take him long to grab the lead from Wilson on this night and sail on to his second ULMA feature win of the year. Russell became the second driver this season to claim multiple wins. Wilson was second with Imhoff holding on for third by fending off a late charge from Jake Griffin in fourth. Zeke Langley and Chris Cox also represented ULMA with finishes at the end of the night. The lone race for ULMA drivers to possibly earn points this weekend takes place at Callaway Raceway on Friday. Drivers and fans may log onto the track’s official website for start times, directions, and general information at www.callawayraceways.com.

Just one week ago, defending ULMA champion Rylan Long failed to make the feature event after struggling throughout the night in heat race and b-main action. Long was admittedly down about his team’s performance during the evening and he did not even stick around for the night’s main event. This week, Long turned things around in a big way at the track where he is also the defending champion. Once again, a stellar car count was on hand, in fact the largest weekly racing late model car count for two weeks running in any of Missouri’s bordering and neighboring states has occurred during ULMA action at Lucas Oil Speedway. There were 32 drivers on hand for four heat races, a b-main, and a main event. Lane Ehlert continued a series of strong runs by claiming one of the heat races with Harlan Kennedy and R.D. Peterson also finding victory lane in preliminary action. Joe Walkenhorst, in a new Swartz late model, took the win in the b-main.

For the main event with the strong field of cars narrowed down to 24, things got off to a rocky start early on as there were two red-flag situations, ultimately leading to the event being shortened by five laps. As the field came down the front stretch to begin lap two, several cars running from fifth on back made contact and went for a series of varying spins. Miraculously, the nine cars involved all re-started the event. However, just one lap later, Alan Westling’s car became hooked on another down the front stretch and when the two cars separated, Westling’s car violently turned left and careened into the turn one barrier tire. His car went airborne, cart-wheeling and barrel rolling with the car eventually landing on its hood. Westling’s Father, Trace, who was running just behind the incident immediately steered his car to the infield in order to check on his son. It was a few moments of breath-holding but eventually the young driver was able to crawl from his car to be reunited with his Father. Although shaken up, Westling talked about his disappointing night as he worked under his car to prepare it for loading into the race hauler. He relayed it had been a bad week for him and his family as someone had poised to death two of three of the family’s dogs and although he was bummed about the outcome of the night, he was thankful he was seriously injured in the violent crash.

Once the track crew cleared the wreckage from the incident, track officials cut the race to 15 laps. From lap three on, the action was near perfect on the immaculately prepared track. Long charged from his fourteenth-starting position to assume the lead on lap seven. Meanwhile Harlan Kennedy, Ehlert, and Jeremy Kelley ran strong near the front. Long built up a near straightaway lead on the rest of the field by lap twelve, as several cars jockeyed for position behind him. Jeremy Kelley, who like long came from deep in the field into the top five looked strong for the second-consecutive week. However, by race end, no one had anything for Long as he claimed his first Lucas Cattle Company ULMA win of the year. Kennedy, Kelley, and Ehlert finished among the top five with Brett Wood, Larry Jones, Brandon Imhoff, Chris Hawkins, and last week’s winner, Tommy Cordray rounding out the top ten. This weekend, the track hosts the ASCS Warrior Region Winged Sprints plus POWRi Midgets and B-Modifieds; for start times and ticket information visit www.lucasoilspeedway.com. ULMA next appears at the speedway on Mother’s Day weekend, Saturday, May 12.

Lucas Cattle Company Becomes ULMA Title Sponsor!

Sam Stoecklin
ULMA Public Relations
April 23, 2012

In what will easily go down as the most successful and memorable weekend in the six-year history of ULMA, the association is proud to announce Lucas Cattle Company has come on board as the association’s title sponsor. Lucas Cattle Company is a brand you can trust and provides cattle you can count on! The company strives for the finest Simmental genetics available. Since its inception, Lucas Cattle Company has grown into an operation consisting of 17,000 acres, 1,200 head of Simmental cows, and 800 head of commercial cows.

Obviously, this is a huge boost for ULMA at the right time. ULMA is thrilled to make this announcement and wishes to thank the company for believing in what the association has accomplished to date and what it has yet to conquer and achieve in the future. ULMA looks forward to a continuing relationship with Lucas Cattle Company. For more information, visit the company online at www.lucascattlecompany.com. Everyone at ULMA will perform at their absolute best to ensure the namesake of the Lucas Cattle Company ULMA Late Models is upheld to the highest standards. With this announcement, ULMA officials are now capable of creating an end-of-year points fund available at the end of the season for the top performers among the already over 40 drivers participating in the championship season. Look for a future announcement from ULMA regarding the point fund in the near future.

To accompany the exciting title sponsor news, ULMA drivers participated in its most successful weekend ever, beginning with a visit to the ‘Historic Half Mile’ in Sedalia at Missouri State Fair Speedway as support class to the ever-popular World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series. Twenty-four ULMA drivers signed in to compete on the night and it took two jam-packed 12-car heat races to sort things out to determine the main event lineup as the night wore on. Neosho, Missouri driver Chris Hawkins claimed the Midland Printing opening heat race from his fourth starting position with Kevin Coyne, Jimmy Morris, and Jason Bodenhamer following him across the line. For General Fence, LLC heat race number two, it was Lane Ehlert of Foristell, Missouri, a first-time competitor at the track taking the win ahead of pole-sitter Bob King, current ULMA point leader Jason Russell and seventh-starting Brett Wood. With a good-old fashioned straight up start for the main event, it was heat-race winners Hawkins and Ehlert claiming the front row for the 20-lap main event.

Hawkins quickly asserted himself as the proverbial front-runner when he darted out to an early lead over Ehlert, Coyne and Morris. Ehlert appeared to have Hawkins covered in the turns but Hawkins denied any and all challenges on the long straight-a-ways anytime a new suitor thought he could make a move. Things ran smoothly until lap six when several cars got together down the front stretch triggering a chain reaction accident that eliminated Walt Imhoff with left-front damage on his machine. At the same time, the strong running Ehlert was hit from behind and was relegated to the back of the field unable to complete the race, ending his strong half-mile debut. Ron Binning, Gary Billings Jr., and Dave Mosley also saw their nights come to an early end as they exited the speedway. The field slowed again a couple of laps later when sixth-place runner Jason Bodenhamer lost oil pressure down the back stretch, ultimately ending his bid for a return trip to ULMA victory lane at Sedalia. When the race resumed, it was third-starting Coyne who began to come to the front with a classic battle for position with Russell and Morris. Later in the race, Brandon Imhoff began making his way to the front of the heap as he drove into the top five just past the halfway point.

The next ten laps were caution free and featured several close battles for position among the talented group of drivers laying it all on the line. Inside the top five, Hawkins continued to edge out Coyne for the lead while Imhoff surged, ultimately taking the third position and dropping Russell and Morris back one position each. Just as the race appeared to be going green to the final lap, Jon Binning’s motor let go with just two laps remaining setting up a two-lap dash to the checkers among the leaders. When the green flag waved to resume the race, Hawkins did all he could to hold of Imhoff’s surge to the front with Coyne in tow. On the white-flag lap, Imhoff took second and set his sights on Hawkins for the win but the leader was not to be denied in this event as Hawkins claimed the victory on his first-ever visit to the speedway. Imhoff crossed the line second, Coyne third, Russell fourth, 13-year old Jake Griffin came away fifth, while Morris brought home a solid sixth-place finish.

The next night at Lucas Oil Speedway, a record ULMA weekly car count of 35 drivers participated in the race program’s five heat races and b-main event to setup the lineup for the 25-lap main event. Ehlert made his first trip to the speedway pay off with a win in the opening heat while past track champion Tommy Cordray claimed heat two. Larry Jones, Matthew Brookshire and Imhoff claimed heats three, four and five while Chris Morelock took the checkers in the b-main event.

Ehlert and Cordray earned the front row positions for the main event by virtue of earning the most passing points for the night through the heat races as the pair set out at the front of the field at the initial green flag. Ehlert ran inside the top three behind Cordray and Jason Russell for the opening laps until the first caution flag flew for a stalled Brett Wood in turn three. Another caution flag waved on the next lap when Justin Russell spun, at the same time 2-time ULMA winner Chris Hawkins left the speedway with a flat tire, ultimately to return and post a seventh-place finish at the conclusion of the race. On lap twelve, with an intense battle at the front of the field that included Cordray, Russell, Ehlert and Jeremy Kelley, an incident with a lapped car ended Russell’s night on the hook just as he was going for the lead. Mike Berger and Chris Morelock also saw their nights come to an end around the same time as Andy and Harlan Kennedy and Matthew Brookshire also exited the race before the checkered fell.

The race featured a classic three-man battle for the win as Cordray, Imhoff and Kelley searched around the multi-lane racing surface for the fastest way around the speedway. At one point coming off turn four and heading down the front stretch in front of the enthusiastic crowd, the leaders actually made contact with one another to add even more excitement to the already intense battle for the lead. On lap 17, Kelley grabbed the second position from Imhoff who slipped to third as both drivers kept Cordray in their cross hairs in hopes of claiming the win. With just two laps remaining, Coyne brought his car to the fourth position from his original 21st starting position to add to the lead group excitement. Coming for the checkered flag, Kelly pushed hard for the win one final time only to have his bid fall short at the line as Cordray claimed the $1,000 winner’s share edging out Kelley, Imhoff, Coyne, Ehlert, and Jones at the finish. Next week another exciting weekly program awaits drivers and fans at the speedway, be sure to check out the track online by logging onto www.lucasoilspeedway.com.

Once again Friday night action at Callaway Raceway lost out to Mother Nature last week as the track had hoped to roll into its second race program of the year last Friday night. The venue will try again this Friday to again host another night of racing excitement for the fans and drivers. Callaway Raceway is located in Fulton, Missouri. The track may be found on the World Wide Web by visiting www.callawayraceways.com.

Historic Half Mile, Weekly Racing, and Increased Purses Await ULMA Drivers this Weekend!

Sam Stoecklin
ULMA Public Relations
April 17, 2012

In just a few days, ULMA drivers will compete at the ‘Historic Half Mile’ in Sedalia, Missouri, on what will likely be one of the biggest ULMA events drivers have ever competed in. ULMA will serve as the support class for the immensely popular World of Outlaws sprint cars, returning to the half mile for the first time since 2010 this Friday, April 20th. The ULMA portion of the race received an extra boost when two race fans, also local businessmen, answered the call for business partners to team with ULMA to increase the purse and ULMA extends its sincerest thanks to these businesses for their support.

Midland Printing & Promotional Products, Inc. will award one driver a $100 bonus for a mystery finish from the results of the late model main event. Midland Printing, which is located at 1021 South Ohio in Sedalia, Missouri, is a long-time race supporter at the Missouri State Fair Speedway. Printing services include brochures, business cards, invites, newsletters, flyers, informational postcards, hero cards, and much more! Saddle stitching, numbering, folding and die-cutting are available plus office supplies and stamping. Paper towels, can liners, napkins, and much more are available on the janitorial side of the business. Contact Barry today at 800-483-3480, or email midland0096@sbcglobal.net for more information.

General Fence, LLC takes care of your Residential and Commercial Fencing needs and now they are taking care of ULMA drivers with added money to the late model purse. Aluminum, Vinyl, Iron, and Wood fencing are just a few of General Fence, LLC’s specialties. Protect your properties and rest assured your home or business is protected from trespassers. From the charm of white picket fencing to the dependability of a chain link fence, General Fence, LLC should be your one and only stop when the need for fencing arises. Visit them online at www.generalfencellc.com, contact Jeff at jeffgvmo@comcast.net, or call him at 816-847-6386. ULMA also thanks Clint Brown for his support and assistance during the scheduling and arrangement of this event. Fans may visit www.slspromotions.com for reserved seating for the WoO/ULMA event or call 815-344-2023 for ticketing sales and information.

Extra purse money is also on the line this Saturday night as Lucas Oil Speedway, which opens its 2012 weekly racing program with $1,000 up for grabs to the ULMA feature race winner. Gates open at 5 with racing kicking off at 7. Adult general admission is $12, senior citizens age 62 and up are $8, Youth age 6-15 just $5 and kids age 5 & under always free. Family Passes include two adult admissions and up to three youth, for only $25. Show Your AAA Membership Card at the gate and receive $3 off any Adult or Senior General Admission Ticket. A limited number of VIP Suites are available for Saturday's event. Contact Cheri Boehler (417)282-5984 for more information.

Last weekend, ULMA drivers Larry Jones, Jason Russell, and Chris Morelock participated in the MLRA race program at Lucas Oil Speedway and raced their way into the main event all on their own, not needing one of two ULMA provisional starting spots offered to participating ULMA drivers. These drivers and Mike Berger earned ULMA points for competing in this team effort. There are three additional races in which MLRA and ULMA will pair up for the benefit of late model racing, look for more information throughout the year. For additional information about Lucas Oil Speedway, visit them online at www.lucasoilspeedway.com.

Last Friday’s action at Callaway Raceway was washed out by Mother Nature but the track is set for round two of its weekly race program again this Friday as the track comes back to life with another full race program. Jason Russell captured the first win of the season two weeks ago at the raceway and currently leads the overall ULMA standings. Who will take the win this Friday is anyone’s guess; for additional information visit www.callawayraceways.com for race day details. With three chances to earn points this weekend, the point standings will definitely change when they are released early next week.

Visit www.ulmaracing.com for race results, rules, general rules, and an update on point standings after the final checkered flag falls this weekend. Like ULMA on FaceBook to stay current on the latest racing developments leading up to and after all ULMA racing activity.  Driver membership forms are easily accessible on the association’s website under the Drivers link. Driver dues are $100 this season, membership is mandatory at Lucas Oil Speedway, Callaway Raceway, and upon the third time competing at Valley Speedway, where the next event is Friday, May 11. Jason Russell and Chris Hawkins Victorious as ULMA Season Begins!

Sam Stoecklin
ULMA Public Relations
April 8, 2012

ULMA’s first weekend of competition is now in the rearview mirror and Jason Russell and Chris Hawkins were the first drivers to visit victory lane for the 2012 season.  The first ULMA race of the year at Callaway Raceway drew fourteen competitors, eight of whom are ULMA member drivers. Jason Russell was the first driver to make a bid for the season title by claiming the victory in the Callaway main event. Behind him at the finish were Chris Lapp and Jake Griffin. ULMA member Justin Russell finished fourth with former ULMA champion Vance Wilson completing the top five. Zeke Langley, Chris Cox, Ashley Lancaster, Alan Westling and Trace Westling, all ULMA member drivers, completed the top ten at the finish. Week two at Callaway Raceway gets underway this Friday at the track, be sure to visit the official track website at www.callawayraceways.com for all race day details.

For the first time in several years, Kansas City-area race fans witnessed ULMA late model racing right in their own backyard as competitors made a welcomed and triumphant return to Valley Speedway in Grain Valley, Missouri last Saturday night. With fourteen drivers on hand, twelve of which were ULMA members, it took two qualifying heat races to set the stage for the 25-lap main event, which served as the night cap for the speedway’s race program that saw 86 cars sign in to compete. Among late model competitors on hand were three former track late model champions and the overall 2008 ULMA champion.

Jon Binning appeared to be on his way to victory in the opening heat; however, a brush with the high side entry of turn two proved to be costly as eventual winner Kevin Coyne and Brett Wood were able to slip by at the finish, relegating Binning to third. Jason Bodenhamer, the 2008 ULMA overall champion was a threat to win the heat race until he side-swiped the back stretch wall, ending his bid for the win. Heat race two had veteran driver Dale Eaton starting from the pole alongside Lane Ehlert, all the way from the St. Louis area starting to his outside. Eaton grabbed the early lead but another long-distance traveler, Chris Hawkins, from Neosho, Missouri had this heat race easily covered as he claimed the victory. Eaton hung on for second with seventh-starting Jimmy Morris, a former Valley Speedway late model track champion in third. Veteran racer Gary Billings made his return to racing with a fourth-place run in the heat race.

The evening’s top qualifiers started the main event at the front of the field and with the fans wave of approval; Coyne and Hawkins took the first Valley Speedway late model green flag of the year. Hawkins quickly asserted himself as the man to beat and advanced to a three-car lead ahead of Coyne, also a former track champion at the speedway. The first four laps were furious with Coyne, Morris, and Wood doing everything they could to reel in the leader, unfortunately Ehlert’s night ended early as he pulled to the infield. On lap four, Billings also experienced mechanical problems as his night came to an end while. At the same time, James McMillin experienced a scary moment between turns one and two when his car suddenly veered to the right, leaving the speedway at a high rate of speed. Luckily, McMillin halted the car before making contact with the outer guardrail and continued the race.

Just after the race resumed, Morris found his way around Coyne for the second position while around the same time Eaton’s night ended with an early exit to the pit area. By this time, eleventh-starting Bodenhamer was picking off cars each lap and made his way to third ahead of Coyne by lap nine. Bodenhamer raced hard with his brother-in-law Brett Wood and Coyne for the next few laps as the trio fought for the third position during some of the best racing action of the night’s program. Finally, Bodenhamer edged ahead and set out to catch Morris for second place. By lap seventeen McMillin’s night came to an early end just as Wood took over third from Morris with Coyne advancing to fourth a few laps later. Morris later slipped back in the field after a group of lead-lap cars encountered a front-stretch challenge maneuvering around a lapped car.

Bodenhamer inched closer to Hawkins through the closing stages of the race but after eighteen straight laps of solid racing, the caution waved for Wood, who experienced mechanical woes while running in third. On the restart, it was Hawkins, Bodenhamer, Coyne, Binning, and former track champion Steve Clancy inside the top five. With the white flag waving, Bodenhamer began showing Hawkins his nose using the topmost portion of the track, especially coming off of turn four, bringing the fans to their feet for an exciting finish. Meanwhile, Binning and Coyne battle closely for third just behind the lead duo. Bodenhamer stalked the leader on the final lap as he and Hawkins raced cleanly down the back straight and into the final turns. Hawkins’ car stuck like glue to the middle lane as Bodenhamer gave it all he had in one final attempt for the win. At the line, Hawkins claimed the victory by no more than three feet over Bodenhamer. Jon Binning had a nice run to finish third with Coyne, Clancy, and Bob King finishing third thru sixth. Behind them, Morris, Nathan Cates, Wood, and McMillin rounded out the top ten.

Throughout the season, ULMA will appear on several occasions at the quarter-mile track, with most of the races falling on Friday evenings. The next appearance for ULMA at Valley Speedway is Friday, May 11. If you are a fan of late model racing, be sure to add Valley Speedway to your list of tracks to visit and be sure to pass on to the speedway staff that you enjoy seeing late model racing up-close and personal at the speedway. You may log onto the track’s official website at www.valleyspeedway.com for the track’s event schedule and information regarding fan-friendly upgrades while enjoying all of the exciting track action.

Two ULMA drivers will earn provisional starting positions for the MLRA main event. ULMA competitors will earn full ULMA points for competing. “In addition to bringing in the top drivers from the MLRA, track officials have partnered with the ULMA Late Model sanctioning group to count this as a ULMA point race. ULMA drivers who do not race their way into the feature can qualify through these provisional starts.”

Lucas Oil Speedway will award their provisional start to the highest finishing driver in Lucas Oil Speedway Late Model Track Championship points in 2011, who does not transfer to the main event. ULMA will award its provisional start to the highest finishing driver in ULMA Championship Points from 2011 who does not transfer to the main event through normal qualifying. All competing ULMA cars must be in compliance with ULMA rules and all drivers must be active 2012 ULMA members, no exceptions! Complete details are located online at www.lucasoilspeedway.com. Once again, only paid ULMA members are eligible for the provisional starting positions at this and other partnered MLRA/ULMA races!

The track is hosting the first round of the “Kasey Kahne Challenge,” a race for the World of Outlaw sprint cars. This event takes place on Friday, April 20th when ULMA will serve as the support class for this event. ULMA Season Opener Just One Month Away!

Sam Stoecklin

ULMA Public Relations

March 1, 2012

Hard to believe for some and not soon enough for others, whatever the case, there’s no denying another race season is nearly upon us. In just over a month, drivers will lean hard on their power plants and put their driving skills on display for fans making their way to sanctioned events during ULMA’s sixth season of competition.

The short off-season produced its share of ups and downs for ULMA but even the loss of a title sponsor has not slowed down the association and its continued determination to keep weekly late model racing alive for race enthusiasts. Once again, ULMA has another exciting season of local competition at local venues from early April through September. For the sixth-consecutive year, long-time affiliates Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Missouri (Saturday racing) and Callaway Raceway in Fulton, Missouri (Friday racing) will feature late model racing sanctioned by ULMA.

Lucas Oil Speedway kicks things off with a test and tune session on Saturday, April 7th from Noon to Dusk. Pit passes for this practice session are $15. The first ULMA points-earning event at the speedway takes place on Saturday, April 21st where stand-out regulars such as defending track and overall ULMA champion Rylan Long and former track champion Tommy Cordray are expected to continue their successful runs at the speedway. The track recently announced that “ULMA Late Models must be registered with the sanctioning body to be eligible for point fund pay. There are no additional track imposed fees for any driver participating in the Lucas Oil Weekly Series events. In 2011, 30 local drivers received generous cash and contingency awards at the Champions' Banquet.” The speedway has another solid points fund lined up for participating drivers in 2012 and you may find this information and the special-events schedule online at www.lucasoilspeedway.com. ULMA applauds the speedway’s backing for drivers to become members of the association and is extremely proud to be part of the action at the venue.

Callaway Raceway comes to life for the 2012 season with involvement in a racing car show on Saturday, March 17th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at C&R Market on Business Route 54 South in Fulton; a rain-out date is set for Saturday, March 24th at C&R Market.  Practice at the raceway takes place on Saturday, March 31st from 2 to 5 p.m. Pit admission is $10 with general admission 2 canned goods or non-perishable food items for the food bank, the rain-out date is Sunday, April 1st same times apply. The first ULMA point’s race, which is also the first ULMA point’s race of the year, takes place on Friday, April 6th with planned competition continuing through mid-September. Last season, car counts were solid at the mid-Missouri location with several different drivers making their way to victory lane. Be sure to visit www.callawayraceways.com for events schedule, start times, and pre-season details. ULMA thanks Callaway Raceway for once again partnering with the association for another season of exciting action.

Upon learning it had lost a key connection to the Greater Kansas City area after CMS announced it would not open in 2012, ULMA contacted Valley Speedway owner and promoter Dennis Shrout and the two parties worked diligently finding selected race dates to keep late model racing on track in the shadows of the metro skyline. Mr. Shrout and ULMA fully agree the stage is set and the opportunity is there for drivers to compete and fans to the fill the stands at the speedway when late models are present. The association is thankful to be part of the events scheduled at the Grain Valley, Missouri track and as of press time a total of eleven events dot the schedule.  Saturday, April 7th serves as the first point’s-earning race at the track. Drivers are reminded that on their third appearance at the track, they are required to join ULMA as a member. For additional track information, reserved pit stall info, the events schedule, and much more bookmark www.valleyspeedway.com. ULMA thanks Valley Speedway for this opportunity and for supporting driver membership.  There are several opportunities to test and tune prior to regular racing getting underway, practice begins March 3rd and continues for three more sessions on March 10th, 17th, and 25th weather pending.

Another upswing to the off-season after the bad news of no title sponsor occurred when ULMA was contacted by an extension of the group promoting the World of Outlaws sprint car race at the ‘Historic Half Mile’ in Sedalia, Missouri. This will mark a rare appearance for ULMA at the speedway, which is located on the Missouri State Fairgrounds.  The race takes place on Friday, April 20th where ULMA will serve as the support class to the immensely popular sprint car spectacular. This will easily be the biggest staged event ULMA drivers will have the privilege to compete in since the association began. Local businessman Barry Smith of Midland Printing Company took up the association’s invitation to support the ULMA portion of this event and share in the public relations releases and print media that will be produced and distributed by the event promoters. Smith will provide a mystery finisher in the event with an extra $100 bonus, for which the association is extremely grateful for his support. There is still plenty of time and room for additional businesses to take advantage of this fantastic offer to be a part of this hugely anticipated event. Simply contact ULMA via the association’s official website at www.ulmaracing.com.

ULMA is pleased to announce the addition of Buyraceparts.com as a new business partner for the coming season.  The new business is a retailer of high-end motorsports and safety equipment whose mission is to provide its customers with the highest-quality hard parts, accessories, and protection equipment, while helping them race within a budget by providing competitive discounts. This business model allows them to live on a smaller margin than comparable retailers, and they pass the savings along to their customers. Buyraceparts.com will provide product certificates to drivers finishing in the final top 10 ULMA championship point standings at the end of the season and we are greatly appreciative of their support for local racing. You may find the retailer online at www.buyraceparts.com.

Drivers are encouraged to visit www.ulmaracing.com and to complete and send in their membership form to save time and money on the first night of racing. A membership fee paid by March 31st is $75, a membership paid April 1st or later is $100. Membership forms are easily accessible on the association’s website under the Drivers link, then Membership Form link. Forms will be available at various tracks or from on-site ULMA officials when present at affiliated tracks.

This year’s affiliated sponsorship team consists of Imhoff Construction, TCI® Automotive, Fast Shafts, Rod End Supply, Buyraceparts.com, SafeRacer.com, Kenny’s Tile,  Racingjunk.com, , Kenny Johnson’s Race Replicas, D&L Motorsports, Photographics by Shelly Payne, and InsuranceSpecialists.com.  ULMA is a proud supporter of Homes for Our Troops.  To join the team, simply contact ULMA at unitedlatemodelassociation@hotmail.com.

Year Number Six on the Horizon for the United Late Model Association (ULMA)

Sam Stoecklin

ULMA PR

Three months after the final laps of the season were turned, ULMA is preparing for its sixth-consecutive year of sanctioning weekly and special-event late model racing.  The association is anxious for the 2012 season to arrive and continues to make arrangements for what is sure to be another close battle for the championship.  Last season the championship battle came down to the final weekend of racing when Greenwood, Missouri driver Rylan Long claimed the crown just ahead of Jake Griffin and former champion, Jason Bodenhamer.  Long was the fifth different ULMA champion in as many years.

Recently, ULMA drivers participated in an online survey with a chance to provide feedback to the association’s board of directors.  Suggestions and comments were reviewed for consideration in preparation for releasing the competition and general rules.  Board directors tried to keep changes to a minimum heading into next season but it was evident from the feedback that some changes were needed.  One of the most significant changes will actually not take place until 2013, when dry-sump oiling systems will no longer be allowed.  Another change for next year includes the increase of deck height to 38 inches.  Also for 2012, it will be mandatory that all cars equipped with dry-sump oiling systems utilize a maximum 8,000 rpm rev limiter.  For a complete rundown of rules visit the association’s all-new official website at www.ulmaracing.com.

One of the hottest topics in the survey results was focused on the points-earning system.  Beginning in 2012, a new point system awaits drivers.  ULMA believes the new system will reward member drivers for their active participation in racing events while not jeopardizing the close finishes in all five of the previous battles for the championships.  Not only will drivers earn points based on their official finishes, they will now earn points based on total car counts at the speedways they compete and they will also earn points based on how many races they compete in throughout the season.

Last week, ULMA received one of the most exciting confirmations in its history after a representative of Missouri State Fair Speedway in Sedalia, Missouri informed ULMA it will serve as the lone support class for the April 20, 2012 appearance of the World of Outlaw Sprint Cars!  This event will easily be the largest audience ULMA drivers have ever competed in front of in the history of ULMA.  The last time the sprinters rolled into the ‘Historic Half Mile’ the grandstand crowd was near capacity for a thrilling night of racing.  ULMA wishes to thank the MSFS organizers of this event for helping to secure the supporting role in this mega event.  This will mark the third appearance of ULMA late models at the half-mile speedway.

The association is pleased to announce the return of Callaway Raceway in Fulton, Missouri (Friday nights) and Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Missouri (Saturday nights) as sanctioned tracks for 2012 and sincerely thanks them for believing in ULMA racing for a sixth-consecutive year.  Callaway Raceway has not yet posted their schedule; however, the track generally begins operations in mid April, visit www.callawayraceways.com.  Lucas Oil Speedway will host 13 ULMA-sanctioned events in 2012 beginning Saturday, April 21; check them out online at www.lucasoilspeedway.com.  Despite a previous announcement by Quincy Raceways in Illinois that they would run under the ULMA banner for 2012, the track reversed its decision within days of their original announcement and will not be sanctioned by ULMA in 2012.  ULMA officials also recently learned that another track set for ULMA sanctioning for 2012 may not be open next season.  As of now, 24 Raceway in Moberly, Missouri will not be in operation.

Often when there is less than desirable news, there is also great news to report and for 2012 that news is the addition and return of Valley Speedway in Grain Valley, Missouri.  The tight quarter-mile track located just outside of Kansas City, Missouri had previously held several close competition ULMA races and the association is thrilled that promoter Dennis Shrout has given ULMA at least 12 dates for next season, most of which are Friday nights.  Mr. Shrout’s generosity has not only kept ULMA’s name associated with the storied history of racing in the KC metro but late model racing in general.  The first race of the year for ULMA will take place at Valley Speedway on Saturday, April 7.  Valley Speedway reminds all drivers that there is a muffler rule at the speedway. The approved mufflers are Custom Craft 3 and 2 ring insert, Schoenfeld 112535 short muffler, and Shoenfeld IMCA 609.  Visit the speedway online at www.valleyspeedway.com.

ULMA wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!  We’ll see you at Bodee’s Racers Auction on January 28/29 in Sedalia, Missouri at the Mathewson Center.  Drivers completing their registration forms at the auction prior to the start of the season save $25 on their membership!
