Higley holds off Strong for Industrial Material
Surplus Iron Man Challenge checkers at LA Raceway
LA MONTE, Mo. (April 19) – Mike Higley of Tecumseh, Kan., won for the third time
in his last three starts Thursday as the Industrial Material Surplus Iron Man
Challenge for USRA B-Mods invaded the LA Raceway in La Monte, Mo.
Higley, who won the last two Iron Man features at the I-35 Speedway dating back
to last August, snared the lead from Jeremy Chambers following a restart on lap

winner’s share of the prize money.
Shawn Strong gave Higley all he could handle during the last half of the race,

fourth despite starting 22nd on the grid. Thirteen-year-old Trevor Hunt rounded
out the top 5 finishers.

Van Genderen gets birthday gift, Higley gets second Industrial Material
Surplus Iron Man Challenge win at I-35 Speedway
WINSTON, Mo. (March 25) – Two winners emerged Sunday after two late-race lead
changes highlighted the main events for the Industrial Material Surplus Iron Man
Challenge event at the I-35 Speedway in Winston, Mo.
Defending USRA Stock Car series champion Mike Van Genderen celebrated his
birthday Sunday with a gift from Tom Schmitt on the final lap of the 20-lap
feature race.
After taking the white flag, the two-time American Racer USRA Weekly Racing
Series champion slipped high going into the first corner which allowed Van
Genderen to sneak by underneath.
Schmitt fought back and made a charge at the end but came up a fender short at
the flagstand as Van Genderen scored his seventh career Iron Man honors to
pocket the $700 top prize.
While Schmitt settled for the runner-up paycheck, Sean Johnson took third with
Matt Greiner fourth and Tory Reicks fifth to give Hawkeye State hustlers a sweep
of the top five spots and nine of the top ten.
In the USRA B-Mod 20-lap main event, Jesse Sobbing seemed to have things well in
hand until a blown right rear tire ended his run with just a handful of laps
remaining.
Mike Higley, who captured last year’s event at the track, inherited the lead for
the restart and held off the challenges of teenager Tyler Droste for the win.
Trevor Hunt, Truman Asher and Casey Greubel completed the top five at the finish
line.
USRA B-Mods will get the spotlight to themselves when the series invades the LA
Raceway in La Monte, Mo., on Thursday, April 19. Stock Cars and B-Mods will
share the billing again Memorial Day Weekend with a doubleheader on Thursday,
May 24, at the Highway 3 Raceway in Allison, Iowa, and Saturday, May 26, at the
Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn.
All three shows will accompany the USMTS Modifieds on the racing card.

Roberts finds Iron Man Challenge pot of gold at Humboldt Speedway
HUMBOLDT, Kan. (March 17) – The long haul to the Humboldt Speedway in Southern
Kansas paid off for Nick Roberts as the youngster from Des Moines, Iowa,
captured the 20-lap USRA B-Mod main event Saturday night in Round 2 of the Iron
Man Challenge.
After a 13th-place finish Friday night, Roberts used a strong heat race finish
and some luck of the Irish on St. Patrick’s Day in drawing the outside of the
front row for the main event.
He used it to his advantage as he held off Oklahoma’s Irish duo Ross McCartney
and Chad McNamara to score the victory and pocket the $500 winner’s share of the
purse.
Shawn Strong came from 14th to finish fourth and local favorite Tim VanGotten
rounded out the top 5 at the flagstand. Sixth went to Cresco, Iowa’s Jason
Schlangen, seventh was Jeremy Chambers, Friday night’s winner Scott Drake was
eighth, Nick Newton nabbed ninth and veteran Steve Muilenburg took tenth.
This weekend’s season opener for the Iron Man Challenge was the first venture
into the Sunflower State for the series and the first USRA-sanctioned event for
B-Mods at ‘The Hummer’ which will sanction the division as part of their weekly
Friday night programs in 2012.
Last season 367 tough-as-nails drivers took part in the Iron Man Challenge,
including 237 different B-Mod drivers and 130 Stock Car competitors.
Both the USRA Stock Cars and USRA B-Mods will be in action next weekend when the
Iron Man Challenge accompanies the USMTS Modifieds to the LA Raceway in La
Monte, Mo., and the I-35 Speedway in Winston, Mo., on Friday and Saturday, March
23-24.

Three premier Pacific Northwest tracks add USRA Modifieds to weekly
line-up
COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (March 13) – The 2012 season will find the popular USRA
Modifieds at three more tracks in the Pacific Northwest, officials from the
United States Racing Association announced today.
Oregon speedplants Willamette Speedway in Lebanon and Sunset Speedway Park in
Banks, along with the Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Wash., brings the total to
four new USRA Member Tracks in the region.
“This is a great step forward for the USRA,” said Lon Oelke, Director of Growth
& Parnerships for the Webster City, Iowa-based sanctioning body. “Not only have
we been fortunate to gain three new USRA Member Tracks in the great Northwest,
but all three are among the most successful operations in Oregon and Washington.
The facilities are second to none and the staff at each track is amazing.”
Bounded by the Pacific Ocean to the west and, loosely, by the Rocky Mountains on
the east, the move will bring the Northwest closer to complete uniformity in
open-wheel dirt Modified rules as White City’s Southern Oregon Speedway recently
transitioned to USRA rules.
“We are looking forward to working with the United States Racing Association
(USRA) in the future,” said Jerry Schram, promoter at all three venues. “This
association will add consistency, recognition to the drivers and points funds to
all of the tracks. We can’t wait to get this season started.”
Drivers in the USRA Modified division will compete for a points fund worth up to
$1,500 at season’s end to the track champion plus multiple contingency awards
and a $10,000 top prize for the national champion in the American Racer USRA
Weekly Racing Series.
In order to give drivers and teams the appropriate time to transition to the new
set of rules, all three tracks will have a year to phase the rules in. For 2013
it is expected that all cars be up to the USRA standards and cars will be
compatible and on the same page with all previously mentioned venues.
The move will be very helpful come time for the 2nd Annual Wild Wild West
Modified Shootout events in June where there will be a common base of rules at
the majority of the tracks that will host the races.
Some things to note for local teams and fans is that the formats and the rules
will be relatively the same even though the tracks are transitioning the rules.
There will be no aluminum block engines allowed to compete at any of the three
tracks as well. Amongst the three venues there will be a total of fifty points
events throughout the course of the 2012 campaign.
The Willamette Speedway has operated since 1966 and has been regarded as the
“Late Model Capitol of the Northwest” for many years, and is anxious to host
fans with the vast upgrades and improvements done over the 2011-12 winter. In
addition to the USRA Modifieds, weekly action will be comprised of Late Models,
Sportsmans, Classics and Mini-Trucks. For more information on the latest news
and stories regarding the Willamette Speedway log on to
www.trophymotorsports.com.
Dustin Dittman of Albany is the defending Modified track champion at the
Willamette Speedway.
The Grays Harbor Raceway is known for its high speeds and side-by-side racing,
as well as its large size. The track hosts regular racing from April to
September with 360 Sprints, USRA Modifieds, Midgets, Hobby Stocks and Hornets as
regular classes. You can keep up on all the latest activity at
www.graysharborraceway.com for the latest news and stories.
Joe German of Aberdeen is the defending Modified track champion at the Grays
Harbor Raceway.
The Sunset Speedway Park is located just west of the Portland metro area in
Banks on the Sunset Highway. The venue is located in a gorgeous small town
setting with rolling hills in the background and hosts weekly competition with
350 Sprints, the Northwest Wingless Tour, USRA Modifieds, Street Stocks, 4-Bees,
Pure Stocks, Womens and Tracers classes. To stay up to date with the latest
information regarding this wonderful facility log on to

Highway 3 Raceway unveils
17-race schedule, inks deal with Flaws to manage historic clay oval
ALLISON, Iowa (Feb. 20) – The sights and sounds of dirt track racing will fill
the air this summer at the historic Butler County Fairgrounds in Allison, Iowa,
as officials from the Highway 3 Raceway have unveiled their 2012 schedule of
events for the upcoming season.
After more than a decade of hosting a handful of special events throughout the
year, the 2012 calendar includes seventeen nights of racing action on the
half-mile clay oval.
Weekly Saturday night events will feature four classes of racing machines
sanctioned by the United States Racing Association – USRA A-Mods, USRA Stock
Cars, USRA B-Mods and USRA Hobby Stocks – and well-known face will oversee the
racing operations as Larry Flaws has been hired to run the day-to-day operations
of the popular speedplant.
“This is a great opportunity to work for a couple of top notch racing
facilities,” said Flaws, who will also co-promote Friday night shows at the
Mineral City Speedway in Fort Dodge, Iowa. “Both tracks provide fast and
exciting racing, and both facilities are very spectator friendly and set up for
the fans to enjoy racing without a bad seat in the house.
“All race cars and haulers pit on the outside of the track which allows fans to
see everything. They also have great concessions that offer some of the best
sandwiches, pizza and snacks around. For the drivers, they can look forward to
one of the best-prepared racing surfaces in the region and, without a doubt, one
of the best points funds of any track around.”
USRA A-Mods will compete for a track points fund worth up to $1,500 to the
season champion. USRA Stock Cars will compete for $600 to win the points battle
while USRA B-Mods and USRA Hobby Stocks will each square off for a $500 to the
2012 track champion.
The USRA A-Mods will utilize the “alternative” rules package for Modifieds,
while all other USRA rules will apply to all four classes.
In addition to the USRA Weekly Racing Series headlining the Saturday night
festivities at the Highway 3 Raceway, several major special events are also on
tap. The USMTS Modifieds will make three pilgrimages to the track in 2012 while
the USRA Iron Man Challenge for Stock Cars and B-Mods will be featured four
times.
“Having these special series which use the same basic rules package as our
weekly classes should give the drivers that support our track week in and week
out a strong advantage when the ‘big boys’ come to town, Flaws added. “But
whether it is a weekly show of a big money USMTS race, we guarantee that the
fans will be treated to the best racing around and each and every driver will be
treated like a professional and given the same red carpet treatment as the
next.”
The 2012 season will kick off on Saturday, April 21, for the first points race
of the USRA Weekly Racing Series. The Season Championship is slated for
Saturday, Aug. 11.

Deer Creek to continue
partnership with USRA for tenth straight season in 2012
By Todd Narveson
SPRING VALLEY, Minn. (Jan. 31) – The Queensland family and the Deer Creek
Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn., will continue their sanctioning partnership
with the United States Racing Association (USRA) for the 2012 season. This will
be the tenth straight year with USRA sanctioning at the speedway.
The high-banked 3/8-mile speedplant operates on Saturday nights and will have
two classes that will carry the USRA banner. Those will include the USRA RHS
Modifieds and USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods during American Racer USRA
Weekly Series races.
Deer Creek has sanctioned the Modified division since the 2003 season. Bob Timm
of Winona won the first USRA sanctioned race on April 26, 2003, and in that time
there have been 27 different feature winners. Tim Donlinger of Rochester leads
the way with 26 wins under the USRA sanction. Mike Sorensen of Rochester sits
second with 25 wins while Timm is third with 16 victories. Jason Cummins of New
Richland is fourth with 15 wins and Rochester’s Brad Waits is fifth at 13
tallies.
There have been five different track champions in that time frame too. Sorensen
won the inaugural title in 2003 and also was the champion in 2004 and 2006.
Donlinger won the title in 2005 and Timm was on top in 2007. Waits took the
hardware in 2008 en route to capturing his second USRA National Championship and
now Cummins is the three-time defending champion with titles in 2009, 2010 and
2011.
Cummins was also the USRA National Champion in 2010 and was runner-up to Johnny
Bone Jr. in the 2011 title chase.
The car counts at Deer Creek were stellar for the Modifieds in 2011 – one of the
best in America. They ran 12 points nights with an average of 28.66 cars per
event. The high car count for the year was 34 on July 23 and six nights topped
the 30-car marker. There were eight different feature winners this season.
The USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods will enter their third season at Deer
Creek. Brandon Hare of Elma, Iowa, is the only champion in the division taking
both the 2010 and 2011 titles. Hare also leads with the most wins at 13 with
Jake Timm of Winona a distant second with four. Kylie Kath of Owatonna and Erik
Kanz of Winona sit tied for third with three wins each and four drivers have one
victory.
A lot of young talent influxed the B-Mods in 2011 and the car counts showed it.
The class had 13 shows with an average of 21.07 cars on hand. The highest car
count was 27 on June 11.
Although not a part of the weekly line-up, the USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars
will compete three times in 2012 during three marquee events. On May 26, the
full-fendered machines will join the B-Mods as part of the Iron Man Challenge,
along with the USMTS Modifieds. Thursday, July 26, will see the Stock Cars in
action with the USMTS Modifieds again during the 2nd Annual World Modified Dirt
Track Championships and on Sept. 15 they will compete during the Clash at The
Creek featuring the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series.
The 2012 racing season will kick off with the annual car show held at Clements
Chevrolet in Rochester on Saturday, March 31. Weather permitting, there will be
an open practice held on Wednesday, April 4, from 5-9 p.m., and the season
opener is tentatively set for Saturday, April 7, with a 5 p.m. start time.
Individual event and season passes for the 2012 season are on sale now. For more
information on the Deer Creek Speedway, go to www.deercreekspeedway.com.

Southern Oregon Speedway
becomes latest USRA member track, will sanction Modifieds in 2012
MEDFORD, Ore. (Jan. 24) – Saturday nights in the Beaver State will have more
teeth in 2012 as the Southern Oregon Speedway will sanction their weekly
Modified division with the United States Racing Association.
Located near Medford in Central Point, this is the first racetrack in Oregon to
fly the USRA banner and the third venue in a new state to join the family of
USRA member tracks this year.
“We were impressed with (promoter) John Skinner and his organization during our
first visit to Oregon,” said Lon Oelke, USRA’s Director of Growth &
Partnerships. “Many of the aspects of a dirt track are the same no matter where
you go, but the needs and nuances of each facility are always different. We’re
looking forward to getting to know the people and places around Southern Oregon
Speedway, and working with their staff to maintain a fun and competitive class
for both racers and fans.”
Drivers in the USRA RHS Modified division at the Southern Oregon Speedway will
compete for a points fund worth up to $1,500 at season’s end to the track
champion plus multiple contingency awards and a $10,000 top prize for the
national champion in the American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series.
“Our Modified rules are already pretty close, and we really like what USRA has
to offer our drivers,” said Skinner, who has operated the track since building
it in 1996. “I’m a big fan of the Modifieds, and I think our drivers and fans
will be very happy with this program.”
Mark Wauge of Jacksonville, Ore., is the defending track champion. The long-time
racer captured his fifth Modified track championship in 2011. Matt Duste, who
competed this past week in Tucson, Ariz., during the Wild West Shootout
featuring USRA RHS Modifieds, was the runner-up this past season.
This season will kick off with a car show on Saturday, April 7, under the big
tent at the Skinner Autoplex in Medford, followed by a test ‘n’ tune session at
the speedway from 3-7 p.m.
Opening night for the USRA RHS Modifieds will start with a bang as drivers will
be racing for $1,000 to win during the Pear Blossom Special on Saturday, April
14. Pro Mods, Super 4s, Street Stocks and Mini Stocks will also be part of the
weekly program.

Valley Speedway to fly USRA
banner in 2012
GRAIN VALLEY, Mo. (Jan. 6) – Officials at the Valley Speedway in Grain Valley,
Mo., have announced that their Modified division will be sanctioned by the
United States Racing Association beginning with the 2012 racing season as part
of the track’s weekly Saturday night racing program.
“After careful consideration and looking at other options, Valley Speedway has
decided to sanction our A Mod class with the USRA for the 2012 racing season,”
said the track’s promoter Dennis Shrout. “We have looked at what the drivers
have asked and told us … this is what will be best for the track and teams.”
The Valley Speedway Modified rules were already very similar to that of the USRA
RHS Modifieds, so changes will be few and far between for the track’s current
roster of racers.
Drivers in the USRA RHS Modified division will compete for a points fund worth
up to $1,500 at season’s end to the track champion plus multiple contingency
awards for several drivers in the class, and a $10,000 top prize awaits the USRA
RHS Modified national champion in the American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series.
Tim Setzer of Archie, Mo., is the defending track champion in the Modified
division, and was also track champion at the USRA-sanctioned Butler Motor
Speedway during a shortened 2011 campaign.
In addition to the USRA RHS Modifieds, weekly Saturday programs features B-Mods,
Street Stocks and Hobby Stocks. Test & Tune sessions are scheduled on March 3,
10 and 17, and the first regular weekly show taking place on Saturday, April 7,
with ULMA Late Models also joining the action that night.
The Valley Speedway presents a racing season packed with action and excitement
for family friendly entertainment. High profile drivers offer competitive shows
and specialty classes add support to regional teams entering the racing sport.
The track is a 1/3-mile semi-banked dirt oval located 0.9 mile south of I-70
(exit 24) on Main St. (Buckner-Tarnsey Rd.), then 0.4 mile east on Old US 40 in
Grain Valley, Mo. For more information, call 816-229-2222 or visit

USRA RHS Modifieds get another
home in Lone Star State at RPM Speedway
CRANDALL, Texas (Dec. 5) -- USRA RHS Modifieds have found a second place to call
home in the State of Lone Star State as the RPM Speedway of Texas will feature
the mud-slinging open-wheel machines as part of their weekly Friday night
program in 2012.
Last season, the Cowtown Speedway in Kennedale signed on to feature the USRA RHS
Modifieds and had a successful freshman season with healthy car counts.
“We had the pleasure of meeting promoter Wesley Manry last year when he attended
the Fall Jamboree in Minnesota, and we have been looking forward to forming a
partnership with him and RPM Speedway ever since,” said USRA president Todd
Staley. “Sometimes you just know good, smart people when you meet them, and the
feedback we have heard from drivers and fellow promoters in the area has only
enhanced our belief that he has a top-notch facility and great staff working for
him.”
Drivers in the USRA RHS Modified division will compete for a points fund worth
up to $1,500 at season’s end to the track champion plus multiple contingency
awards for several drivers in the class.
A $10,000 top prize awaits the USRA RHS Modified national champion in the
American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series.
The 2012 season will mark the fourth year of operation for the quarter-mile dirt
oval where Charlie Smith of Forney is the defending Modified track champion.
In addition to the USRA RHS Modifieds, Friday night programs will also feature
Limited Modifieds, Street Stocks, Bombers and 305 Winged Sprints.
Opening night is slated for Friday, March 9, 2012.
The RPM Speedway is located southeast of Crandall on US 175 to CR 4106 (Bud Stoy
Rd. exit) to the intersection of CR 4104. For more information, call
972-427-6822 or check out www.rpmspeedwayoftexas.com online.
The USRA was founded in 2002 with the sanctioning of Modifieds and Stock Cars at
the Thunder Valley Speedway in Fayetteville, Ark. Hobby Stocks were added in
2003 and the organization grew steadily over the next three years with 14 tracks
hosting USRA events in 2005. The B-Mod division arrived on the scene in 2006 and
since then, USRA Weekly Racing Series national champions have been crowned in
all four premier divisions.
