Weaver and O'Neil started side by side in the feature in the sixth row, Kevin
on the outside. They battled the whole race until O'neal droped out with about 6
laps left. Kevin went on to edge Aukland at the finish. My wife called to tell
me this and said it was the best race she has ever seen. Congrats to Kevin!!!
Keep up the good work.

"Gopher 50" results.......I think I have most of this correct,
but some of the cars at the tail end may be out of order.
Here goes....
1)Moyer ($12,000), 2)O'Neal, 3)Aukland, 4)Webb, 5)Birkhofer, 6)R.
Sheffler, 7)Parker
8)Drake, 9)Egersdorf, 10)Erb, 11)S. Kosiski
12)Barnhart, 13)Dixon, 14)Frye, 15)Laurson
16)C. Martin, 17)D. Miller, 18)Mathees,
19)Patterson, 20)Redetzke,......& then something like Kraft, Scott,
Aikey,Weaver,Stokes,Waits, and Toland.
Again, sorry if not all of these are correct.....But they are pretty
darn close (hey, you get what you pay for right?).
Moyer jumped out to the lead while a great battle went on behind him
between O'Neal, Aukland, Weaver, and Stokes. This went on for the first 34
laps when, while closing in on the leader, O'Neal and Stokes bumped a bit
giving Stokes a flat tire and ending his night.
On lap 39 Weaver stopped on the track while moving in for the lead. His
night was over as well.
After the Weaver caution, Mr. Smooth pretty much had an easy time
cashing in on the lion's share of the Blooming Prarie J C's money.
A very good race for the big track!!
I hope these results helped out the "at home"
4mers.
Take Care all!!!!!

RACE #17- FAIRBURY, IL-
BILLY MOYER
Moyer snaps out of slump, takes $10,000
win at Fairbury American Legion Speedway.
By Darin Stewart
(July 8) Following a disappointing week according to Billy Moyer’s
standards, he broke out, by winning the UMP Summer Nationals and the $10,000
check for the winner’s purse. Driving the J&J Steel/ Petroff Towing/AFCO/
Clements Racing Engine/GRT, Moyer took the lead on lap 19 by passing Matt
Miller, and never looked back racing to the win at the ¼ mile Illinois
speedway. Following Moyer to the line, were Kevin Weaver, Matt Miller, Pete
Parker, Terry English.
Pete Parker jumped into the lead from his pole position spot, and held the
lead until lap 3, when Matt Miller slipped inside of Parker’s #10 machine.
After talking the lead, Miller, aboard the Denny Thornton owned, Lo-Temp
Brazing/ Rocket pulled out to a several car length lead, until he caught up with
lapped traffic. As the leaders worked into traffic, the track quickly became
one-grooved on the bottom of the track, and made working lapped traffic
difficult. As Miller struggled to get around Ron Donaldsen, he moved up the
track to pass the slower car, and Moyer slipped around both cars, and took the
lead. While Miller tried to regain his position, his difficulties with Donaldsen
continued, as Kevin Weaver slipped around as well, and Miller was now in third
place. The top three cars pulled away, but featured no passing among themselves,
and finished Moyer, Weaver, aboard the Turner Bus Service/Weaver Racing
Supplies/Custom Racing Engines/ Rayburn, and Miller, with Pete Parker, and Terry
English finishing in the top five. Rounding out the top ten include Mike Mullvain, Bob Pohlman Jr., Don O’Neal, Bob Pierce, and Joe Ross Jr. Among the
drivers who failed to qualify for the feature included; Bill Frye, Steve Hillard,
Kevin Claycomb, Rob Toland, Todd Bennett, and many more. Kevin Weaver set quick
time of the 52 cars present. The Dash win went to Pete Parker, over Moyer. Heat
race winners were Bob Pohlman Jr., Don O’Neal, Bob Pierce, and Joe Ross Jr.
The semi-feature winners were Rick Aukland, and Ron Donaldsen.
Heat 1: Bob Pohlman Jr., Gary May, Joe Harlan
Heat 2: Don O’Neal, Jay Fiene, Jeff Riblet
Heat 3: Bob Pierce, Billy Drake, Corey Turner
Heat 4: Joe Ross Jr., Dennis Erb Jr., Frank Schickel Jr.
Semi 1: Rick Aukland ,Matt Taylor, Bill Frye, Kevin Claycomb

RACE #16- FARMER CITY, IL-
RICK AUKLAND
Aukland “Lays the Smack down” at Farmer City Summer Nationals…..
by Darin Stewart
(July 7) Rick Aukland of Fargo ND, continued the recent trend of
MasterSbilt victories, with a Lynn Chevrolet-Buick-Geo sponsored UMP
Summer Nationals win at Farmer City(IL) and the $5,000 check that goes
with it, in front of the huge crowd at the ¼ mile fairgrounds in Central
Illinois. Aukland also captured his first career checkered flag at the
facility with the win. Chasing Aukland to the win were Kevin Weaver,
Dennis Erb Jr., Billy Drake, Bob Pierce.
After running in the 2nd place in the opening laps of the 50-lap race,
Aukland assumed control of the race after pole sitter Joe Ross Jr. slipped
off the track in turn 2 on lap 20 and fell back in the field. After
assuming the lead, Aukland proceeded to pull away from the field and work
lapped traffic to perfection in his black and yellow #12 Malcuit/ MasterSbilt. “ The crew did a great job tonight. Everybody at the shop
has been working real hard. They have been working on different things,
and have been learning some things that helped us tonight. We started to
slow up a bit at the end, and I was real glad to see the checkered flag
come out. This was a good win for our team, and MasterSbilt Race Cars”
said the winner Aukland. Runner up, Gibson City IL driver, Kevin Weaver
thought maybe his car needed a few adjustments in order to mount a
challenge” We changed motors today, and went to a small motor for these
slick tracks. We just needed a little more gear to get it done. We’ll
take a second place though, and move on” said the local favorite. The
blue and white B12 driven by Weaver is sponsored by Turner Bus Service,
and features Custom Racing Engines, and a CJ Rayburn Race Car. Rounding
out the top five were Dennis Erb Jr., and Billy Drake, and Bob Pierce.
Finishing sixth through tenth include Don O’Neal, Billy Moyer Jr., Joe
Ross Jr., Roger Long, and Steve Hillard who charged from a 20th starting
position.
Rick Aukland set fast time of the 44 qualifiers with a time of 12.764.
Three cars, including Randy Korte, Jeff Thrasher, and Matt Beadles were
present, but failed to make a qualifying attempt. The UMP Summer Nationals
moves on to the Fairbury American Legion Speedway for a $10,000 to win
special on Saturday July 8.

RACE #15- MACON, IL-
MATT TAYLOR
Macon Speedway
July 6,2000
Herald and Review 100
UMP Summernationals stop #15
by
racenutdan
This was the 20th year for the Herald and Revew 100, and the 20th year I
have made the early July trek to this mid-Illinois 1/5mile (oops, 1/4 mile
the ads say) speedplant. Every time I think I have seen it all, I get
surprised. I have seen the last lap pass for
the lead. I have seen the payoff held up for 4 days due to a protest by a
driver 3 laps down who thought he won. I have seen the win given to a driver
light at the scales, and another taken away the same way. I have seen 2
drivers win on their first visit to Mighty Macon. I have seen attrition
leave only six cars running at the end. There was
one time one driver led the whole 100 laps. Twice the race has gone non-stop
green to checkered. There was the year a certain popular young driver had
motor problems at the start, switched cars, went from the front row to start
dead last, then passed everyone on his way to an apparent victory, only to
realize he weighs about 50 pounds less than the rookie he replaced - another
one lost to the scales. There was also the year that one driver had a flat,
went to the infield and two competitors who had already dropped out changed
the tire for him, then he went on to win.
But Thursday evening's 100-lapper was probably one of the most action packed
races ever held in this series, at least in my eyes. Twenty-nine drivers ran
through 3 heats and a semi-feature to qualify for the twenty starting spots.
Once again, it was a battle of the 'locals' versus the 'travelers' with the
field split evenly between the two. The race track was not it's normal
2-grooves at the start of the race - it was at least 3 grooves or more and
by the time attrition started taking it's toll 2/3 of the way through the
race, it turned into a true 2-groove track, complete with 'marbles' between
the grooves on the high banked turns. Right from the start, Kevin Weaver
took off from his front row outside starting spot for the lead over pole
sitter Joe Ross, Jr., with Ross leading lap 2, then fade a bit as by lap 7
Ed Dixon had moved into 2nd, only to have problems ending his night on lap
8. Weaver continued to hold on to the lead until lap 18 when Shannon Babb
found the high side and slipped by the low running Weaver for the lead.
Weaver regained the lead until lap 32, when he was passed again by Babb, and
two laps later Ross also got around Weaver. Ross once again took the lead on
lap 42, as Babb fell out on lap 46, and Ross led until Weaver again
challenged and took the lead at lap 72. Weaver then led until lap 95 when
Matt Taylor, who was flying on the high side for several laps, challenged,
then took the lead and held on for an exciting win over Weaver, Ed Bauman
and Bob Pierce with Billy Drake and Steve Sheppard the only other cars on
the lead lap with Butch Smith the lone lapped car that managed to finish.
Attrition took it's toll as only 7 cars were still running at the end. Of
those seven drivers, Weaver has 2 wins in this race, Pierce 3 wins, Bauman 2
wins, and Billy Drake 2 wins, so it appears that experience in this race
probably pays off well. I believe the records will show 8 lead changes among
4 drivers. That is not the complete story, as several others tried
unsuccessfully to slip past the leader at different points, including Ed
Dixon, Billy Moyer, driving Jeff John's car, and Don O'Neal. O'Neal might
have been the story of the evening had it not been for bad luck. Spun on lap
27 by a lapped car, the 5th place starter went to the back, only to have a
flat on lap 53, go to the back again, and work his way through the field, to
challenge Weaver for the lead on lap 87, only to have another flat and rear
end suspension parts break. The Real Deal was then done for the night.
There was an extra $5,000 bonus to the winner if the race went nonstop, but
with 10 or 11 cautions, that went unclaimed.
The Dash was won by Ross,Jr with heat wins going to Billy Moyer,Dick
Taylor, and Matt Taylor with the semi going to Kirby Damery.
This was also the first win by the son of a former winner - Matt Taylor is
the son of 1988 winner Dick Taylor, who unofficially retired from full-time
racing after the event.
In all, 29 drivers from 6 states took part in the activites, with 5 states
represented in the starting field.

Well as always the
Mighty MACON Speedway was action packed and much to the delight of the
late model fans a great show was seen by all with Matt Taylor becoming
the first second-generation driver to visit victory lane for the
HERALD-REVIEW 100 following in dad Dick's footsteps as Dick was the 1988
victor.

From here its on to the Farmer City Raceway and home of the racenuts!!
P.S. There was a $5,000 bonus on the line tonight for the Herald-Review
victor if the race had gone green to checkered without a caution, however;
it went uncollected. There were plenty of cautions but there was also
plenty of great racing which seen 3 and 4 wide racing at times! |

Notes:
The "out of control" tour that I had previously
referred to in other posts is apparently over. For MOST of the
50 laps, Erb and O'Neal raced pretty much side by side with
O'Neal pretty much holding the advantage over Erb, but I never
did see either one touch the other -- the Erb we have all seen
in the past is back -- maybe the "Erb is in control"
tour is next!!
The scorers and I, and obviously a lot of people in the
stands and the pits did not see the same finish in the 4th heat,
where they scored Moyer 1st and Pierce 2nd. I thought Pierce had
clearly passed Moyer in turn 3, and had about a full car length
on Moyer at the flag. (wouldn't be my first error-LOL)
The only yellow in the feature came on the first lap as #16
Shawn Negangard's bad fortunes continued - this time the dry
sump belt broke shortly after taking green flag and he coasted
to a stop in turn one.
That yellow flag negated the pass just executed by O'Neal on
Curry, the only time Curry was challenged for the lead.
On a personal note, my apologies go out to all those who
listened to me when I said there would be only one support
class. Instead, they had pro stocks, hobos AND 46 modifieds. All
racing was still done at 11:20 -- not bad.

LM Feature ($5,000 to win, 40 laps):
1) #B12; Weaver,
2) #00; Korte,
3) #21; Moyer,
4) #28; Erb Jr,,
5) #71; O'Neal,
6) #7; Reaber,

8) #99; Tyne,
9) #28; Epling,
10) #27; Pohlman Jr.,
11) #166; Izzo
That's all I have (unofficial btw). Track was super dusty all night, had two
grooves though; mid-track and right on the bottom. The top was no-man's land.
The early race incident with Izzo Jr. and Erb Jr. saw Tony Jr.'s car turned
sideways on the backstraight by Erb Jr., with Erb Jr. keeping his foot in the
throttle and sending Tony off the track's exit ramp, almost into the barrier for
Turn 3. The resulting onslaught between the two took a few minutes as Tony Jr.
came up behind Erb Jr. and hammered into the rear end of his car as a payback on
the frontstretch, sending Erb Jr. almost into the incident. As I've said before
(read the previous LaSalle Results??? post), it was appalling on both driver's
accounts, and I feel that both should be penalized as a result of the incident.
Weaver dominated the event, pulling away to a half track lead at largest by
way of lapped traffic, and using the extreme low groove. Moyer came on near the
end (using the middle groove), closing on Korte (who ran everywhere) but not
getting quite close enough to pass him as the laps wound down. Weaver's car
seemed to almost stutter on the last green flag run, as his lead dropped to
almost half, as his car appeared to slow, but the car resurged to take him to
the $5,000 winner's purse.
The race was marred with tons of cautions, the aforementioned incident, and a
runaway field with most of the field strung out and racing was rather iffy.
Track came apart real bad all night (probably from the sheer amount of rain in
the area), as I'm sure everyone that left the facility was covered in dust.
Mod Feature ($1,000 to win; 20 laps);
1) #23; Hamstra,
2) #25; Thompson,
3) #96; Lueth,
4) #9; Wood,
5) #1k; Kroll,
6) #11; Rhyne,
7) #8; Meier
8) #24; (from dash),
9) #00; Wilson,
10) #24; (from heat 2)
That's the best that I have the finish down (unofficial of course), as I
tried to scribble it down super quick. Racing for the modifieds proved to be a
complete irony over what most people would generally pick. Not only was there
far less cautions (like, almost none, perhaps 1), but the racing was actually
more exciting than the LM's with a 4-way battle for the lead (sometimes even
3-wide) between Hamstra, Thompson, Lueth, and Wood for the top spot.
RACE #11- SUMNER, IL---BOB
PIERCE
Pierce
Conquers Red Hill Summer Nationals!
By Darin Stewart
(Sumner IL) Using the low groove on the big 3/8-mile
speedway, The Tall Cool One Bob Pierce of Oakwood Illinois took
his first UMP Summer Nationals Victory of the Year, and his
first ever win at Red Hill Raceway. Pierce made a late race pass
on Kevin Weaver to take the lead, and the eventual $5,000 check.
Following Pierce to the checkers were Jim Curry, Kevin Weaver,
Doug McCammon, and Kevin Claycomb.
At the drop of the green flag, outside pole-sitter Kevin
Weaver jumped into the lead around fellow front row starter
Kevin Claycomb, and looked to be the one to beat. As the laps
clicked off, though Pierce was moving through the pack from his
7th starting position quietly picking off cars using an ultra
low groove that no one else was using. With only one caution to
slow the event, caused by Curtis Roberts visit to the turn 1
wall, Pierce wasn’t going to get much help from caution flags
to run down the Gibson City IL driver of the Dick Turner #B12.
As it turns out, he wouldn’t need it anyway. On the 26th lap
Pierce used the soon to be lapped car of Mark Johnson as a
helper, and slipped around Weaver for the lead in his Murphy
Trucking/ Da Bar/ X-1R Lubricants/ K-Motion Engines/Rayburn.
Curry then took advantage of the situation and the new Great
Grandfather of Norman IN( 6 lb 4 oz boy born Saturday morning
made for a thrilled Great Grandfather!), slipped around for
second place. Weaver held on for third, and Doug McCammon took
fourth after charging from 12th, beating Kevin Claycomb to the
finish. 6th through 10th went to Don O’Neal, Billy Drake, Mark Oller, and Steve Casebolt Jr.
Heat Winners included Bob Pierce, Jim Curry, and Steve
Casebolt Jr. The Dash victory went to Kevin Claycomb of Kevin
Weaver, Rob Toland, Don O’Neal, Mark Oller, and Billy Drake.
Twenty one cars were present for the 11th stop of the 2000 UMP
Summer Nationals, which barely escaped the rain which threatened
the evening, and put on a display of lightning throughout the
night’s program. An excellent job by the all involved with the
show provided a feature that was finished before 9pm.

Peoria IL UMP Summernationals:
First time promoter Jason Plumer had his hands full Thursday evening with packed
grandstands and packed pit area. In all, 44 late models from 5 states showed up
to try to earn one of the 20 starting spots in the $5000 to win feature. This
was the first ever UMP Summernational race at Peoria, so many of the drivers had
never been here before, including eventual winner Rick Aukland.
Fast time went to Mark Anderson at 13.536
Wednesday's rain made for a one-groove, low groove race track the entire
evening.

Feature - 50 laps for $5,000 to win
(the most EVER paid to win at Peoria Speedway)
All 50 laps were run with almost the entire field glued to the bottom groove.
Polesitter Ed Bauman led the first three laps before third place starter Rick
Aukland motored by him. Aukland at times opened up a sizable lead running the
low groove with Todd Bennett running a line that almost proved successful - he
would run up to the top of the turns, the sharp turn left, come down the hill
and was making up a lot of ground that way. Late in the race, Bennett actually
could pull up alongside Aukland, but could not keep the momentum up to pass him.
Final finish as follows:
12 Rick Aukland,
T2 Todd Bennett,
B12 Kevin Weaver,
6A Mark Anderson,
71 Don O'Neal,
F15 Ed Bauman,
9 Billy Drake,

32 Bob Pierce,

23t Billy Tuckwell. All in all, the 'locals' did o.k.
Seven of the twenty starters were local regulars and five of them finished the
race, including a hard-charging Todd Bennett
p.s. there were 30 modifieds (31 if you count that #M40 car)
#99 Bill Gray led all 15 laps holding off a late charging #64 Gary Cook Jr.

Hedrick made a great run to the front to only run out of laps. I assume he
was given a promoters provisional as he started in the back of the feature.
Feature:
1. O'Neal, 2. Weaver, 3. Pierce, 4. Izzo, 5. Erb
I couldn't tell exactly how they finished from that point on as I was watching
the battle for first and then fourth. I looked to see if final results were
posted and couldn't find.
6. Reaber, 7. Hillard
Pohlman led first 20 or so laps before O'Neal passed him. Pohlman dropped out
with about 15 laps left.
Billy Drake dropped out with 5 laps left with a flat
Weaver took off on the high side after a yellow for Ted Loomis and caught
O'Neal with 20 laps to go. However, Weaver was blocked a couple times on the
straights and was consistently hitting the cushion causing him to slow through
the corners. O'Neal did a nice job of driving and was very smooth.
Pierce made a run at Weaver towards the end but ran out of time.
Erb got up to second but strayed from the low groove and dropped back. It was
nice to see Dennis run good back at his home track. In watching him 3 years ago
I can see a dramatic difference in his driving style and ability from touring
with HAT. Very impressive.
Good racing all night with two grooves. Had a 20 minute rain delay and it
drizzled several times throughout the night.
No Aukland or Moyer (as stated on his webpage)
Jeep Van Wormer and Rob Toland made the haul only to drop from Heat Races

Drake won and Weaver got second. It was very, very close between Don O'Neal and Roger Long. The announcer said he would say who got third and who got fourth, but never did. We asked someone that seemed to be with O'Neals crew, and he thought he got third, but wasn't sure. After that my guess is(I am really not sure)

Top ten as far as I can remember: Weaver, Drake, Russ Scheffler, Chris Carlson, Bret Sievert, Pete Parker, Jimmy Watson.
Jimmy Watson was fast time, Drake won the dash. Don O'Neal won a heat after crashing in the dash. O'Neal had more problems with a cut tire on the opening lap wich set off a three car pileup. O'Neal used the cleanup time to get a new tire and proceeded to claw his way around a tight little bull ring up to I believe ninth. That guy is really having a great year and is lot of fun to watch.
