JUSTIN ALLGAIER WINS FIRST FEATURE AT 15
By Smash the Loud Pedal
(6/23/01)
Justin Allgaier who just turned 15 years old on June 6, proved all those naysayers wrong tonight as he visited the MACON Speedway in preperation for Thursday nights Herald-Review 100, part of the UMP Summer National Series.

Justin who is in just his first full year of racing dirt late models took his Hoosier Tire Midwest, Trashman, Law Automotive, Petroff Towing, Clement powered Rayburn Chassis from the front row starting position to the point and never looked back. Justin captured the 25 lap feature by besting Matt Taylor, Ed Bauman, Joe Ross, Jr. and Virgil Bilbry at the line and in the process became the youngest driver ever to win a late model feature at the MACON Speedway. There will have to be some investigation into the past record books but Justin might possibly be the youngest driver ever to capture a UMP Late Model A-main event in the history of the United Midwestern Promoters series.

Kerby Damery started the night off by turning the track with the fastest qualifying lap of 12.151.

The dash was won by John Graham over Allgaier and Bauman.

Heat honors went to Steve Sheppard, Jr. over Lonnie Franklin and Mike Mudd and Allgaier over Virgil Bilbry and Brad Shelley.

Great job Justin on your first of many wins to come during your career!!!

Swartz cruises to Macon payday
By JAMES S. TYREE H&R Staff Writer

MACON -- Denny Swartz has 11,500 reasons for remembering the 2001 Memorial Day weekend.

The modified car racer from Ashmore won $6,500 Monday night -- make that early Tuesday morning -- at Macon Speedway after earning the $5,000 prize for winning in Danville on Sunday. The lucrative victories were the third and fourth of the season for Swartz.

"I just wanted to finish and finish high," Swartz said. "You want to run as hard as you can without wearing out."

The All-Service Contracting Corporation Modified Special on Monday offered the largest first-place check in Macon Speedway's history.

Monday ended a four-day holiday weekend of Central Illinois racing that was dedicated to modified cars. However, events in Farmer City and Charleston were rained out Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Swartz was ecstatic and "very surprised" by his second consecutive big payday. There will be no trip to Disneyland for this champion, though, because a good chunk of his winnings will pay for a new motor.

Swartz led through most of the 100-lap feature race in his 21S car. Jim Leka and Buffy Clark challenged the leader, waiting for any slip-up, but Swartz would not comply.

"It was like comparing hot water and cold water," Swartz said. "The track was real slow (Sunday) but not today. It was fast."

The 20-car feature had a restart but only two yellow flags after that -- on laps 4 and 57.

It was a clean race on an otherwise stressful night. Speedway owner Rich Webb said mid-afternoon rain ruined what had been perfect track conditions, and that led to delays in the program. The threat of rain may have also thinned the crowd. The stands were about two-thirds full.

Qualifying lasted until well past 9 p.m., and the feature race did not begin until almost 11:30 p.m.

The program began with 74 cars taking one qualifying speed lap. The fastest six drivers automatically qualified for the feature race; all others raced in the six semifinal races. The top two racers from each semifinal also advanced to the feature race.

Clark, of Illiopolis, earned a $50 bonus for driving the fastest qualifying lap, which he completed in 11.96 seconds.

Kyle Logue of Oreana won the third semifinal race that became a battle of attrition. The 11-car race became a four-car affair within the first two laps. Another driver dropped out in lap seven, so the last half of the race had only three cars.

The win was a high point in Logue's up-and-down night. After the semifinal victory, a crew member changed the plug wires on his car, but the wires were crossed. Not knowing why his car wouldn't run, Logue tried to use another car but was turned away because it hadn't qualified for the feature.

Logue's crew found the problem just in time, so the former Argenta-Oreana Bomber raced in his familiar orange and blue car. But the car didn't last, and Logue placed 14th out of 20 cars.

"It's awesome to race 100 laps," Logue said. "So you try to be as calm and collected as you can, yet run fast and aggressive so you don't get lapped."
