Winner-Rained out

Heavy Rains moved over the Brownstown Speedway and the Jackson County Fairgrounds around 2:00 p.m. and continuing drizzle, along with sloppy pit area and track conditions, forced track promoter Richard Bane to cancel the scheduled UMP Summernationals event for this evening. Richard and Bob Memmer (UMP President) said that a make-up date would be announced at a later date. We apologize for any inconvenience and thanks to everyone for your support this year.

Winner-BILLY MOYER

(courtesy of smash the loud pedal)

Billy Moyer of Batesville, Arkansas withstood several hard charges from teammate Shannon Babb and Randy Sellars as well as numerous cautions and a rougher than usual surface to claim the 2001 Summer Nationals opener at Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway.

Moyer started off the evening by topping the other 29 cars in time trials with a lap of 14.597.

Moyer then took his Petroff Towing, Karl Chevrolet, Hoosier Tire, Rayburn from the pole starting position in the dash to the checkered finishing ahead of Shannon Babb, Terry English, John Tindal, Don O'Neal and Randy Korte. Finishing 7-9th and earning front row pole starting positions in their respective heats were Randy Sellars, Kevin Weaver and Tod Rust.

The heats were probably the most exciting events of the evening as Kevin Claycomb fought a hard fought battle to claim the first heat over Sellars and The Tall Cool One Bob Pierce.

The second heat was won by Bobby Dietz over Duke Whiseant and Randall Sweeney.

The third and final heat was captured by Rust over Dale Nelson and Doug McCammon.

The consi was won by Clay Baumann over Rich Garner and set the field for the 40 lap $5,000 to win main event.

The feature turned in to what seemed like an endurance marathon and reminded me of why double file restarts should NEVER BE USED!
There were 7 cautions before lap 11. Moyer withstood several hard charges first from Babb and then from Randy Sellars on restarts but once the green stayed out for more than a lap Moyer was mostly on cruise control.

When the checkered flag fell on the 40th marker there were only 6 cars running and 5th place finisher Joe Mike was DQ'd at the scale for being light which relegated him to the 20th and final starting position.

The final finish was...

1. Billy Moyer started 1st
2. Bob Pierce started 13th
3. Terry English started 3rd
4. Shannon Babb started 2nd
5. Rich Garner started 20th

Late Model Feature Event (UMP Summer Nationals Race)
There is only one phrase that can sum up the nights racing for the UMP Late
Models, "Lets Play SURVIVOR." That is exactly what the field did as the
twenty cars start and six finish. The start of the of the race saw the 21
car of Billy Moyer take an early lead over the field. By lap three the 96 of
Terry English moves up beside the 18 of Shannon Babb to challenge him for
the second spot. Then the first caution was called when track officials
spotted debris on the back straight.
On the first restart Terry English pulls up to high, Randy Sellars and Bobby
Dietz sees this and take advantage of and move up into third and fourth.
This move would be short lived however, as the third caution of the race is
called as Todd Rust avoids Babb when he stalls on the back straight, but he
doesn't quite avoid the wall. Then on the third restart Sellars and English
bump each other and Bobby Dietz moves up to the third position, then on the
next lap Sellars and English take there positions back from Dietz. Then the
fourth caution comes out when Kevin Claycomb has car trouble and slows down
on the track.
The fourt restart saw a three wide battle for the second spot between
Sellars, English, and Babb (position held by Babb). By lap ten Babb had
started to pull away, but a heated battle for the third position between
Sellars, and English still raged on. Then another caution, this yellow was
brought out when the a1 of Duck Whinesat stalls on the front straight. Then
you would think that would be a restart for this caution, there almost was,
but the complete nose piece of CJ Rayburn came loose from his CJ 1 car
calling out the sixth caution of the race. The sixth restart had another
three wide battle for the second spot, but Babb barely edges out English and
Sellars. Then the seventh caution fell onto the field when the 92 of Bobby
Dietz stall in turn two. During the caution Terry English pulls of the track
(reason unknown).
The seventh restart proved good for Sellars as quickly gets around Babb for
the second spot. By lap twelve Sellars had caught up to Billy Moyer (who has
lead the whole race) and starts to race him side by side. Then at the end of
lap thirt-teen Sellars edged out Moyer for the lead, but a little ways down
the track officials found debris, since the full field had not completed the
lap the field went back to lap twelve, this also sends Sellars back to the
second position.
The next restart saw Babb take back his second spot that Sellars had edged
him out for, but by lap sixteen Sellars took back the second position. With
the time it took for Sellars to get around Babb, Moyer had the perfect
opportunity to come out to a big lead over the field. By lap twentyone
Sellars was gaining ground on Moyer, but Babb was also gaining ground on
Sellar, and on lap twenty two Babb takes back the second position from
Sellars. Then the ninth caution of the night was called when Dietz stalls in
turn two once again. During the caution Randy Sellars pulls into the infield
due to tire damage.
The restart had Bob Pierce coming for out of nowhere and taking over the
second spot from Babb, and then Terry English takes over the second spot
(pulled back onto track during caution). For the next few laps Pierce and
English would battle for the second position, but no one could catch up to
Billy Moyer as he goes to prove to be the ultimate survivor for this night
we he wins at KLMS.

Drake Nets $5,000 Summernationals Win at VCS

By Paul D. Bayne

DANVILLE, Ill. (June 17, 2001) Billy Drake of Bloomington, IL returned to his home state Sunday night to visit victory lane in the 40-lap UMP (United Midwestern Promoters) Summernationals event at the Vermilion County Speedway.  The win netted Drake a cool $5,000, one night after finishing third in Jackson, MS.  A race that paid $20,000-to-win.  The race event at VCS was the second completed leg of the UMP Summernationals tour, an annual series that will visit up to 25 tracks in nine states in just a month’s time.  On June 15th, the UMP Summernationals opener at Brownstown was rained out, but last night Billy Moyer of Batesville, AR scored the win.  The series has a rich history of gathering some of the nations top late model drivers throughout its swing.

Thirty-nine drivers were on hand at VCS on Sunday, as well as a near capacity crowd.  Among the entries were seven different feature winners from a Saturday night race elsewhere.  They included Roger Long (Fairbury, IL), Rodney Melvin (Mt. Vernon, IL), Dan Walden (Benton County, IN), Moyer (Kentucky Lake, KY), Scott James (Florence, KY), Dan Sturgeon (Brownstown, IN), and Ed Dixon (I-55, MO).  With the track in excellent condition and the weather as perfect as one could hope for, the field was set for their qualifying runs.  When all was said and done, it was El Paso’s (IL) Joe Harlan registering fast time with a lap of 14.177.  Harlan was the second qualifier to take to the 1/4 –mile and withstood a late run by Kevin Weaver of Gibson City, IL (14.179), who qualified twenty-fourth.

With qualifying completed, the grid was set for the late model trophy dash.  Nine cars going nine laps with the top six slated to start straight up in the main event, with the three remaining cars pacing the first three heat races.  Drake scored an easy win in the dash, and was chased to the checkers by Wisconsin’s Dan Schlieper, who made an unexpected visit to VCS, Duke Whiseant, who also traveled quite a ways from Texas, hometown hero Bob Pierce of Oakwood, IL, Billy Moyer of Batesville, AR, and Ed Dixon, representing the Show-Me state.  Weaver, Harlan, and Chuck Haga filled out the order in the trophy dash.

Four heats were on tap with the top three from each making the main event, and the rest would have to rest their hopes on a strong consolation race run.  The first heat saw Weaver, Marvin Burton, and Shane Cottle advancing.  The second heat went to Dennis Erb over Dick Phillips, and Steve Barnett.  Heat number three went to Haga over C.J. Rayburn, and Matt Taylor, while heat four had John Gill, Shannon Babb, and Don O’Neal transferring to the 40-lapper.  In the first of two consolation races, with the top two from each joining the rear of the twenty-two car field, it was Rodney Melvin and Jeff Martin moving on.  While in the second consolation race it was Scott James and Steve Hillard filling out the grid.

With the field now set to go 40 laps, the drivers saluted the fans with an appreciative four-abreast parade lap.  Truly a sight to behold for any race fan, especially on such a small bullring such as Vermilion County.   Drake jumped out to the early lead over Whiseant, and except for lap number two would lead every lap thereafter.     Drake and Whiseant would bump and grind for position early on, making contact on several occasions. Pierce on lap five, while fighting for position with Whiseant, slipped high in turn three and hung on to the rim, but it cost “The Tall Cool One” some five positions.  On lap eight, Dixon brought out the only caution of the event when he spun his mount entering turn three.

Weaver and Gill by this time had moved ahead a few spots to sixth and seventh, respectively. By lap 11, Gill had slipped into the fourth slot, and three laps later into the third spot behind Moyer.  Moyer, the winner at Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway in Calvert City, KY one night prior, would get to the second spot briefly and could never muster a challenge for Drake.  At the half way point Gill slipped beneath Moyer for the second spot and set his sights on Drake, who had built about a ten car length lead.

As Drake and Gill threaded their way through the slower lap traffic, Babb was busy working his way into the spotlight as he passed Pierce for fifth on lap 22.  As the remaining laps wound down Gill could only get as close as one car length back on the final lap, as Drake was able to hold off Gill to the stripe, while Moyer would go unchallenged to claim the third spot.  Babb would get around the outside of Schlieper right at the line to take fourth away from him.  Rounding out the top ten were Erb, Phillips,  Weaver, Pierce, and O’Neal.

Enough can’t be said about the preparation of the track surface by promoter Bill Marietta and his staff.  The track stayed tacky throughout the night and provided for some great racing action.

The UMP Summernationals moves to Hales Corners Speedway in Franklin, WI tomorrow night (June 18th) for another 40-lap $5,000-to-win special.

Schlieper was fast qualifier and won the dash off the pole so the only passing he had to do was lapped traffic.Other notables that showed. Wendall Wallace won a heat. Pete Parker won a heat. Track was dry slick after two hot lap sessions. An early draw for qualifying was key.Never ever will go back to Hales Corners even though it's only a 20 min ride from home.

Summernationals Victory Schlieper's at Hales Corners Speedway
Franklin, Wis., June 18--Dan Schlieper of Pewaukee dominated round three of the 2001 UMP Late Model Summernationals at Hales Corners Speedway on Monday night as he drove his Performance Roofing Systems - Pro Power - Rayburn chassis Monte Carlo to a $5,000 victory in the night's A Feature.

Schlieper topped a stellar field of 38 UMP late models which included drivers from six states.

Schlieper was trailed under the checkered flag by runner-up Billy Drake of Bloomington, Ill., with Don O'Neal of Martinsville, Ind., Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark. and Shannon Babb of Decatur, Ill. rounding out the top five.

Schlieper set fast time with a lap of 16.526 seconds around the third-mile clay oval and followed it up with a win in the nine-car fast dash to start from the pole in the 40-lap A Feature. Schlieper shot into the lead at the start with O'Neal, Moyer, defending UMP late model track champion Russ Scheffler and Pete Parker trailing. A steady wind throughout the night's activities had turned the track black slick, forcing the drivers to seek grip along the inside in the turns and race nose to tail in the early laps.

Schlieper began to lap the cars at the back of the field at lap 13 which allowed O'Neal and Moyer to close the gap down to just a few car lengths. Behind the lead trio Drake had advanced from his 10th place starting spot and wheeled into a battle with Scheffler for fourth by lap 15. Drake took the spot by lap 20 and Moyer began to mount a challenge on O'Neal for the runner-up spot at lap 23 when the event's first caution flag appeared when local racer Jimmy Watson looped his car in turn four.

The caution flag took the leaders out of traffic and allowed Schlieper to make his escape at the green flag as O'Neal, Moyer, Drake and Scheffler trailed. Drake, who finished second in last year's Summernationals event at Hales Corners, took the third spot from Moyer at lap 27 and zeroed in on the second-place car of O'Neal. The race was slowed for the second and final time on lap 31 when Al Atkinson spun in turn four.

Schlieper led the field back to the green flag with nine laps remaining and with a clear track ahead of him pulled away once again. The battle for second then began to heat up as Drake took several shots at O'Neal in the closing laps. Drake finally took the spot on the final lap as Schlieper picked up the win and the $5,000 top prize. O'Neal settled for third, with Moyer fourth and Babb fifth after displacing Scheffler in the final five laps.

Pit Notes

Several minor incidents spiced the preliminary events. On the opening lap of the fast dash Al Atkinson, Gordie Seegert and Russ Scheffler tangled in turn one with Seegert and Scheffler spinning without incident. On the other end of the speedway, meanwhile, Watson slid wide and into the turn four wall during the yellow. Watson left the track on the hook but rebounded later on with a victory in the third heat. Craig Scott looped his car on the backstretch in the third heat, with both Rob Andresen and Jim Letizia suffering separate spins in turn four in the fourth heat. Turn four got Andresen again with another spin in the B Feature, with local racer T.J. Dolhun pulling into the infield with a mechanical problem. The only accident of the night occurred in the B Feature as John Kresser, Scott and Matt Schultz crashed in turn two. Kresser's car left the track on the hook with significant front end damage.

The win for Schlieper capped a successful homecoming of sorts for the native of nearby Pewaukee. Despite cutting his racing teeth at Hales Corners Speedway, Schlieper had never tasted much success at the venerable old speedway. Fast time, a dash win and a flag-to-flag triumph in the night's main event made for an enjoyable return to his racing roots.

The regular local UMP late model contingent was well-represented in the main event with defending track champ Russ Scheffler faring the best of the bunch with a sixth place result. Other top finishers were Bret Sievert in 13th place, Rick Scheffler in 14th, Jayme Zidar in 15th, Watson in 16th and Chris Carlson in 17th. Occasional competitor Bobby Smith finished 18th with former track champ and traveling racer Atkinson in 19th.

Speaking of Smith . . . the driver known as much for being late on the grid and showing up occasionally at best, put in a great effort in the closing laps of the 12-lap B Feature. Smith found bite along the outside in the final laps and slipped past regular Hales Corners Speedway competitor Jim Zdroik to take the second and final transfer spot into the night's 40-lap A Feature.

WISSOTA racers Pete Parker and Gordie Seegert made the trip south from their usual northern Wisconsin stomping grounds, with Parker topping the second heat race and finishing ninth in the A feature while Seegert finished fifth in the fast dash and capped his night with a 20th place result in the main event.

‘Tall Cool One’ collects Clarksville cash

by Thomas R. Jerles

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (June 23, 2001) - Tony Stewart, Billy Moyer and Donnie Barnhart were the previous winners of the UMP Summernationals at Clarksville Speedway.

Now, Bob Pierce from Oakwood, Ill., has added his name to this elite list.

Pierce started by setting fourth fastest qualifying time. Steve Russell was the fastest qualifier followed by Duke Whiseant and Chuck Proctor.

In the dash (fast qualifier race), Pierce was second to local driver Gary Frost. That put the pair on the pole positions for the feature. An early race caution hurt Frost's chances when he had to restart in the rear. Frost came back to advance through the strong field to finish 11th.

On the restart, Pierce showed his many years of racing experience were an education on how to win. While the high-banked clay oval was a new experience for Pierce, his ability to drive was evident from the drop of the green to the checkered flag. His feature win was worth $5,000.

Pierce drives a stock car to make a living. Following his win he acknowledged how strong the Clarksville Speedway regular racers were. Proctor proved this point with his second-place finish.

Tony Albright, the defending track champion, had won 10 out of the first 11 features this season, but he came up a little short, finishing third.

Don O'Neal started 11th and advanced to a fourth-place finish. Terry English started even further back in 15th and came on strong in the later laps to record a top-five finish.

Billy Drake has been a previous feature winner at Clarksville Speedway, but this trip netted him a sixth-place finish. Steve Ryan, driving Phillip Burr's Ford-powered Late Model, came in seventh. Duke Whiseant from Texarkana, Ark., was the fastest qualifier and finished eighth in the feature. Kevin Weaver experienced mechanical problems that took him off of the pace, but in true racing desire held off the challenges of Randle Sweeney at the checkered flag as they finished ninth and tenth.

One hundred thirty-three stock cars came to compete on the high-banked clay oval. It was a night of racing.

In addition to the UMP Late Models there was a full program in the UMP Open Wheel Modifieds. Mike Neighbors finished just ahead of David Flowers for the win. Feature races only were run in the other divisions. The Pro Street feature winner was Clayton Miller. Double Street Stock features were run. Don Everett won the first and Kenny Gibbs won the second. Ronnie Richardson won the Mini Stock feature.

This coming Saturday night will be a full racing program in all of the divisions. Also there will be a fire works display by Allen's Fireworks. Come and celebrate the Fourth of July early with us at Clarksville Speedway.

June 25 Highland Speedway $5,000 Highland, IL
Winner-DON O'NEAL

(Courtesy of smash the loud pedal)

The Real Deal Don O'Neal from Martinsville, Indiana topped the U.M.P. Summer Nationals as they rolled into Highland Speedway on Monday night for stop #8 on this years summer tour. With 2 of the events previously rained out, O'Neal makes the 6th different winner in 6 events!

O'Neal began his evening by touring the track in 14.076 seconds to record the fastest qualifying lap of the evening over the other 38 cars in the pit area.

The dash was made up of the 6 fastest qualifiers who drew for starting positions in the ever important race that determines the first 3 rows starting positions for the A-main. The dash was won by The Decatur Invader, Shannon Babb over O'Neal, The Flatland Flash Kevin Weaver, The Batesville Bullet Billy Moyer, Mike Yellowbear Hammerlee, and Diamond Ed Dixon.

Heat races were won by Billy Drake over Mark Faust and Jr. Schickel, Duke Whiseant over Lumpy Lowery and Aaron Klein and Rodney Melvin over Kevin Gundaker and Bobby Melvin, and Steve Sheppard, Jr. over Dan Sturgeon and Chad Zobrist.

In the 40 lap A-main O'Neal jumped out to an early lead over Babb with Moyer taking over 2nd from Babb on Lap 3. The first caution fell over the field on Lap 6 as Schickel, Jr. spun.

With the green displayed and the race under way again O'Neal would jump out to a near straightaway lead over Moyer by lap 10. At the 15 lap marker O'Neal began lapping slower cars and the pace of the race seemed to pick up a bit. Lap 16 saw Weaver work his way into 3rd place. On lap 21 the first somewhat controversial call of the evening came as a lapped car dropped in front of Weaver forcing him to check up a bit, Babb who was running behind Weaver attempted to slow and was hit from behind by Whiseant who was also trying to slow, Weaver spun and did a complete 360 without stopping, however; the caution was displayed and the decision was made that the caution was for Babb who spun Weaver. Weaver was given his spot back and Babb was relegated to the rear of the field. Unhappy with the officials decision, Babb left the track.

With the race back under way for a restart it was Billy Drake spinning in turns 1 and 2. Stevie Sheppard is sent to the rear of the pack and charged with spinning Drake and Drake is returned to his original running position. Sheppard also unhappy with the decision takes his place at the rear of the field and tells the flagman the next time by that he thinks he is #1 with a 1 digit salute.

Again the race is restarted and I'm not sure what happened actually but when I looked all I saw was Whiseant underneath Weaver and they both spin on the frontstretch bringing caution back out on the raceway...both drivers are returned to their previous running position.

Now we are back under green and several laps later Ed Dixon and Drake spin in turn 3. Dixon suffers a flat tire and is unable to return to his original running position, Billy Drake is put back into his original running position.

That would be the last caution and the race remained for most of the way to be the all Don O'Neal show until the last 2 laps when Billy Moyer seemed to get a second wind and made several valiant charges at O'Neal but with no luck

When the checkered cloth fell over the field it was O'Neal adding $5,000 to his fold driving the Ware Funeral Homes, Hoosier Tire, C.J. Rayburn #71.

Following O'Neal at the checkered was Moyer, Weaver, Whiseant, Rodney Melvin, Drake, Mark Faust, Sheppard, Jr., Gundaker, Aaron Klein, Zobrist, Hammerlee and Lowery.

From here its on to the Peoria Speedway on Tuesday night for scheduled stop #9 of the U.M.P. Summer National tour across the heartland!

The event will be a 40 lap A-main and will see the winner take home a $5,000

Some interesting calls, but that will be debated. O'Neil had the car. On the last several laps, Moyer came on to O'Neal, but the last turn was interesting with Moyer under O'Neil. O'Neil held on for the win after leading the whole race.

Billy Moyer of Batesville Arkansas wheeled his Petroff Towing, J&J Steel, Karl Chevrolet, Hoosier Tire, Clement Automotive powered C.J. Rayburn chassis to a $5,000 payday tonight as 45 cars invaded the Peoria Speedway for the annual stopover on the U.M.P. Summer Nationals.

The dash was probably the closest racing of the night and the most interest provoking as local hometown hotshoe Charlie Hess beat Shannon Babb to the line on the last lap. However, from the score stand the view looked different and the win was awarded to Babb who had led the first 9 laps from his pole starting position. This caused a great deal of anxiety and displeasure amongst the Peoria local contingent who felt that their guy had been robbed of a win. In talking with Babb, he concurred that he did in fact feel he ran second and he stopped at the judges stand after the race and as a true gentleman tried to convinve the officials that he ran second. However, the tracks decision stood and Babb was awarded the dash win. Following Babb and Hess in the scoring were Richie Hedrick, Ed Dixon, Billy Drake and Todd Bennett.

The heats were won by Mike Cothrron over Kevin Weaver and Mark Faust, Billy Moyer over Bob Pierce and Jim Curry, Don O'Neal over Duke Whiseant and Darren Miller and the final heat went to Kevin Gundaker over Tom Rients and Steve Casebolt.

The consis were topped by Roger Long and Mike Mullvain.

With the field set for the 40 lap main event it was Shannon Babb from his pole starting position jumping out to command an early lead over Hedrick, Ed Dixon, Billy Drake and Moyer.

With a very dusty track condition and most all of the cars hugging the hub in a follow the leader fashion, the race would prove to get exciting as the laps progressed and the leaders closed in on lapped traffic. By lap 15 Moyer had worked from his 8th starting position into the runner up spot. On lap 29 Moyer had severely closed in on his team- mate Babb as Babb had his hands full with lapped traffic in the fashion of Todd Bennett. As Babb followed Bennett hoping to try to get underneath him to pass, Moyer tried the high line and rolled around Babb to take over the point.

The running order was Moyer, Babb, Drake, Hedrick and Dixon when the caution flag flew on lap 35 for that infamous frenchman Francois Debris. For the layfolk, that would be debris on the racetrack!

On the restart, Moyer was the class of the field as he pulled to the lead and would lead the final 5 laps without threat. When the checkered flew over the field it was Moyer, Babb, Drake, Bob Pierce from the 12th starting position, Hedrick, Dixon, Weaver, O'Neal, Hess and Gundaker.

The next stop for the UMP Summer Nationals will take place on Wednesday night at the O'Connor Family's Kankakee Speedway as the UMP cast of players go in search of a $5,000
payday on the 40 lap main event. For further information or details phone (815) 937-1733 or (815) 935-5122.

Billy Moyer of Batesville, Arkansas became the first THREE TIME WINNER tonight at the Mt. Vernon Raceway when he topped the 40 lap A-main on stop #9 of the first 11 scheduled events on the 2001 edition of the travelling show! 2 of the events were cancelled due to an uncooperative mother nature!

Moyer took his Petroff Towing, Karl Chevrolet, Hoosier Tire, B Auto Parts, Clement powered C.J. Rayburn Taurus from the second row outside starting spot to the checkered in the ultra exciting feature event.

Hometown hero and local favorite Rodney Melvin who has been on a terror in the UMP battle for the national championship gave Moyer all he wanted in the fight for the win, and ended up second in a fight that was too close for comfort for Moyer. Melvin started his Rick's Towing Rayburn from the 9th starting spot and came up just short at the stripe in his bid for the win.

Following Moyer and Melvin were Ed Dixon, Kevin Claycomb, Donnie O'Neal, Joe Morris, Mark Faust, Donnie Tudor, Shannon Babb, Billy Drake, Kevin Weaver, Duke Whiseant, Kevin Gundaker and Ron Sensel.

Preliminary action saw Joe Morris capture the dash over Dixon, Faust, Moyer, Claycomb, Bobby Melvin, O'Neal, Tudor and Rodney Melvin.

The heats were won by Randy Korte over O'Neal and Babb, Donnie Tudor over Terry English and Drake, Rodney Melvin over Weaver and Sensel and Doug McCammon over Gundaker and Jimmy Burwell.

The consi's were topped by Duke Whiseant and Curtis Roberts.

The next stop on the Summer Nationals series will see the UMP contingent invade the Paducah International Raceway tomorrow night for a 40 lap A-main event with a $5,000.00 payday awaiting the winner! For info. or details contact the track by calling (207)

Stop number 13 on the UMP Summernationals series was at I-55 Raceways in Pevely, MO. Billy Moyer came to town with
a vengeance, as he swept the 33 car field, setting fast time at 13.310, winning the trophy dash and dusting the field in the 40
lap, $10,000 to win feature. After besting Ed Dixon, Don O'Neal, Tim Ratajczyk, Shannon Babb and Clay Bauman in the trophy
dash, Moyer was set to take the feature from the pole position. Ed Dixon lined up on the outside front row, and led the first
six laps, but sliding up against the wall let Moyer get underneath him for the lead, and Moyer never looked back.

ILLINOIS IS THE PLACE TO BE JULY 1 THRU 8

Eight straight days in July beginning on the first, a race fan can get an ultimate fix of Summernational racing in Illinois. Many miles will be traveled that week as the length of the State is covered night after night.

Starting at DuQuoin in the far south with a $10,000 to win race on the one mile track, and heading north to Pecatonica the next night (a 275 mile trek) for another $10,000 to win show, the UMP Late Models kick off July with a big bang. The next four nights are somewhat closer in driving distance as LaSalle, Spoon River, Macon, and Farmer City tracks play host for $5,000 to win shows.

Then, on  Saturday night, the always popular stop in the summer trip arrives at Fairbury Speedway for another $10,000 to win show. This event at Fairbury is usually one of the largest of the Summer Series and should draw 50 plus cars for the racing action. As the series prepares to depart the Illini state for Hawkeye territory, one last stop in East Moline on Sunday night caps off an eight day run through Illinois.

Five other races were held in Illinois prior to this eight day run, making the Land of Lincoln the King of  Dirt in UMP Summernational racing.

Billy Moyer wrote his name into auto racing history books alongside names like Foyt, Unser, Bryan and Hartman when he became one of the few men to win major races on the "Big 3" dirt miles of the midwest as he took the 30-lap main event for UMP late models at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds.

Moyer, who has previous victories at Springfield and the Indiana State Fairgrounds, dominated the main event as he took the lead from Martinsville, Indiana's Don O'Neal on lap 10 and never looked back.  Teammate Shannon Babb of Decatur finished third in the Summernational main event, and set a new one-lap track record in qualifications of 29.700,  121.212 miles per hour.  Fourth was Kevin Gundaker of St. Louis, Missouri.

The race marked the 1st visit to the DuQuoin "Magic Mile" of NASCAR's Ken Schrader in fifteen years.  Schrader has never won at DuQuoin, and Sunday he was denied again, finishing fifth in the main event.

Late model heats were won by Babb, and Jerry Buck of Paragould, Arkansas.

A nice crowd also witnessed some great UMP Modified action, as Jim Sherreck of St. Charles, Missouri took the 20-lap main event in that division, over Minnesota's Ron Jones, Terry Messenger of Robinson, 16 year old Kyle Steffens of St. Charles, Missouri, and Johnny Sullivan.

There were several incidents of wall contact in the modified main, the most serious by Rich Lentz of Herrn, Illinois who hit the third turn wall, but emerged uninjured.  Heats in the modified division were won by Dale Wester, Messenger, Jerry Buck and Sherreck.

Buck's bad luck at DuQuoin continued Sunday, as he had a flat left front on lap 12 while leading the modified main event.  He also had an engine blow late in the going last year during the Oldani Memorial at the DuQuoin State Fair.

The next auto event at DuQuoin is the Ted Horn Memorial 100 for the USAC SIlver Bullet Series on September 2, followed by the Southern Illinois 100 for the ARCA Stock Cars (featuring Ken Schrader) on Labor Day.

Starting the race on the outside front row, the Flatland Flash fell in behind pole sitter Don O’Neal through a series of early cautions, the first of which saw UMP Summernationals points leader Billy Moyer make contact with the turn four wall.  Moyer pitted for repairs, returning to action in 23rd spot only after a mishap on the ensuing restart required a stoppage of the race to separate two machines.  Weaver took the lead following an additional restart on the second lap, securing his position at the top when Bill Frye’s evening ended in the turn three wall.  Brian Birkhofer shadowed Weaver during the opening laps, while Steve Boley advanced up to third from his sixth place start.  Boley used the next caution on lap 26 to swap positions with Birkhofer, closing in on the leader by running a half of a car width lower on the racetrack.  Using the next eleven laps to setup an opportunity to pass, Boley made his move on lap 37, diving underneath Weaver for the lead just as the red flag was waving for an injured spectator in the infield.   With the pass negated, Boley lined up for the double file restart in the second position, with Birkhofer alongside.  Finding some moisture in the cushion, Birkhofer rocketed ahead of both Boley and Weaver on the restart, leading the pair off of the second corner but falling back in line after the same piece of real estate in turn 3 failed to provide similar traction.   Boley was able to mount only a last corner challenge, pulling underneath but unable to hold the lead as the cars crossed the checkers.  Birkhofer had his excellent third place showing nullified when his car failed to make post-race weight, handing third to Darren Miller ahead of Don O’Neal.  Moyer used the caution flags and double file restarts to claw his way back into fifth at the checkers, ahead of Dennis Erb Jr and Shannon Babb.  Ryan Dolan and Gary Webb rounded out the top ten after spending the final stages battling each other while negotiating slower traffic.

The next event on the huge half mile will be the UDTRA Pro Dirt Cars, running for $10,000 to win on Wednesday August 8th.  Hot laps are scheduled for 6:15 with time trials and racing to follow.   For more information, contact Simmons Promotions INC at 563-744-3620 or online at www.simmonspromotionsinc.com

MACON SPEEDWAY
Herald & Review 100
(by 1racenut)

This is definitely the 'crown jewel' of the UMP Summernationals, and at one point, before the summernationals, before UMP, this was the premier event in the state of Illinois. USAC even sanctioned the event in 1986.....

former winners:

1981 #23 Butch Garner
1982 7 Pete Willoughby-1st timer at Macon
1983 32 Bob Pierce
1984 36 Roger Long
1985 32 Bob Pierce
1986 40 Jim Leka-USAC sanctioned
1987 28 Rick Standridge-led all 100 laps- no yellow flags
1988 24 Dick Taylor 25 lbs light-no UMP points
1989 40 Jim Leka
1990 18 Scott Blomquist-1st timer at Macon
1991 B12 Kevin Weaver
1992 B12 Kevin Weaver-Pierce took checkered- light at scale-DQ'd
1993 21 Billy Moyer
1994 rat1 Bob Pierce
1995 25 Joe Ross, Jr.
1996 9 Billy Drake
1997 99 Ed Bauman-Shannon Babb, In Bilbrey's car, from last to 1st- light at scale-DQ'd
1998 1B Ed Bauman
1999 9 Billy Drake-no yellow flags
2000 117 Matt Taylor
2001 32 Bob Pierce

The good news is that of all these drivers, only Pete Willoughby and Dick Taylor are not currently still driving. Willoughby is from Indiana, had a back injury the following year, and is still involved in midgets as a car owner - at one time for some guy named Tony Stewart, I believe. Taylor is still very much involved in helping his son Matt, the only son of a former winner to win the race.
Garner and Leka both still race modifieds at Macon, and are always still a threat when the checkered flag is unfurled. ALL of the other names on this list of former winners are a definite threat to win any time, anywhere.
The last two issues of Dirt Late Model magazine have had featured articles on two of these drivers, Matt Taylor and Joe Ross, Jr.
This will be a GREAT race, as always, looking forward to seeing everyone there!

If you see the racenut, give me a holler!

July 05 Macon Speedway $5,000 Macon, IL
Winner-BOB PIERCE

(courtesy of smash the loud pedal)

While the car count was slightly down, the action was doled out in heaping portions tonight as the UMP Summer National Tour rolled into the Macon Speedway for the 21st running of the Herald Review 100.

When the scoreboard displayed lap 100 it was The Tall Cool One Bob Pierce visiting victory lane for the second time in as many nights and adding another $5,000.00 paycheck to his war chest!

The evening started off with 25 cars taking time around the always exciting Macon Speedway and when qualifying commenced it was previous Herald Review winner Billy Drake posting the fastest lap of the night with a time of 11.184 seconds. The remainder of the dash would be comprised of Shannon Babb, Ed Dixon, Don O'Neal, Matt Taylor and Pierce with Billy Moyer, Joe Ross, Jr. and Mark Faust added to the dash. The dash was won by O'Neal which earned him the pole starting berth for the 100 lap A-main. O'Neal was followed by Dixon, Pierce, Taylor, Babb and Drake.

The heat races were won by Kevin Weaver over Mark Faust, Marc McClintock and Shane Cottle and Steve Sheppard, Jr. over Moyer, Marvin Burton and Cory Daugherty and Ed Bauman over Ross, Jr., Jeff Leka and Todd Rehg.

The consi which would transfer the final 2 starting positions to the A-main was won by Kerby Damery over 15 year old Justin Allgaier. When Allgaier moved into the second and final transfer spot, there was hardly a person sitting as the entire stands stood in applause of the young mans efforts!

The feature got underway and saw O'Neal jump out to an early lead over Ed Dixon, Bob Pierce, Shannon Babb, Kevin Weaver and Billy Drake. On lap 6 the caution flew as Matt Taylor looped his car in turn 1 and 2.
On the restart Pierce moved to second and watched as the caution flew again on lap 11 when Taylor again spun in turn 1 and 2.
By lap 25 it was O'Neal over Pierce, Babb, Weaver and Drake. After several more cautions the running order remained O'Neal, Pierce, Babb, and Drake. After playing it safe for the biggest part of the race it seemed that there might be several cars that could have something for O'neal late in the race as Babb and Moyer both jumped to the top and started to get their momentum rolling, while Pierce and Drake both chose the bottom of the track to try their march forward. Pierce who took the lead from O'neal on lap 81 as his tires began to fade had the field under control and was never seriously challenged. On lap 85 Drake moved to 2nd and when the checker flag fell over the field it was Bob Pierce at the helm ahead of Drake, Babb, Moyer, O'Neal, Ross, Jr. Shane Cottle, Rehg, Allgaier, Damery, Sheppard, Jr. and Taylor.

Congratulations to Bob and the crew on their win tonight as Bob made this his 4th Herald Review 100 title!

Also congrats to 1st year promoter Richie Webb and his crew on a great race!

UMP Summernationals stop #19 on one of the oldest Summernationals tracks. 44 Late Models
showed up to do battle on this lightning fast quarter mile track on Friday night. Local track frontrunner
Mike Mullvain set fast time of 13.052 seconds with the rest of the top six being tour regulars,
Billy Moyer, Shannon Babb, Billy Drake, Ed Dixon and Don O'Neal. Ed Dixon won the dash, setting
himself up for pole position in the feature, followed by O'Neal, Babb, Moyer, Bob Pierce and Kevin
Weaver. The start of the 40 lap, $5,000 to win feature event had O'Neal jumping out in front
with Dixon in tow. By the second lap, however, Babb, Moyer, Pierce and Weaver all decided to
challenge Dixon for second, all at once. This made for some very exciting four-wide racing
down the backstretch and through turns three and four. This was typical of the feature, which is
how a couple of the heats were also run. O'Neal led every lap, but withstood a lot of heavy pressure
from Babb, then later from Pierce, who tried in vain to use the lapped traffic to get around O'Neal.

DON O’NEAL took his frustration of Thursday’s choice of a soft Hoosier out on the field going flag to flag in the UMP Summer Nationals main event at the Farmer City Raceway.

3 Shannon Babb
4 Billy Moyer
5 Billy Drake
6 Jim Curry
7 Ed Dixon
8 Kevin Weaver
9 Dennis Erb, Jr.
10 Roger Long

RACE NOTES…

-DON O’NEAL timed in sixth then trailed Dixon in the dash. At the start of the main event the Real Deal wrestled the lead away from the polesitter then motored away. When traffic slowed Donnie O’s roll on lap 16, O’Neal was forced to move off the rim in three and four to pass the back markers allowing Babb and Pierce to close. Once the back markers were shelved, O’Neal pulled away. In the last ten laps, traffic again drew Babb and Pierce close, but a battle among the two let O’Neal drive off to the win.

-BOB PIERCE looked to be in line to repeat early on when the Tall Cool One went to the hub running three wide with Babb and Moyer on lap two for third. A couple of trips later, the trio became a quartet marching four wide off four. When Babb went to second, Pierce slayed Moyer and Dixon for third. From there, the pair of Illinois’ finest slugged it out while chasing the leader. When traffic entered the picture, the two made them an added bonus of obstacles for the droves in attendance. With four laps to go, Pierce used JOE ROSS, JR. as a pick off two to take second. In the final laps Bob was able to make larger circles and chip into O’Neal’s lead but never mount a serious charge.

-SHANNON BABB came out of the four wide tango with second in the opening laps then chased O’Neal. While O’Neal rode the rim in three and four and the hub on the other end, young Shannon was all over the black dirt searching for more. When Pierce rolled up, the Babbster hung around the top and worked the traffic well enough to keep Pierce at bay. After dropping back in the final few, Shannon finished third solidly.

-BILLY MOYER was quiet all night making the most noise early when he joined Pierce and Babb in the race for third. After passing Dixon for 4th, Billy could only get close enough to Babb and Pierce to be the best spectator in the race for second.

-BILLY DRAKE and JIM CURRY charged from deep in the field to finish fifth and sixth. Drake broke through quicker picking off May, Long, Allgaier and Ross. Curry circled the same drivers to run down Drake at the finish.

-ED DIXON and KEVIN WEAVER each faded from their dash worthy starts. Dixon finished running alone working lapped traffic while Weaver lead DENNIS ERB, JR. and ROGER LONG to the checkered.

Some of the drivers who watched the feature go 40 laps with no yellows were… Darrell Lanigan (who was dumped by Erb in his heat then rolled from the tail of the consi to be the first car out), Jeep Van Wormer (who too was the first car to miss from his consi), Eddy Shickel, Ryan Dauber, Marvin Burton, Sherry Heckenast, and Chuck Baird.

Off to Fairbury Saturday night to see more of the Memmerpalooza 2k1 Tour. With Thursday’s hard core, early ECW type action, and Friday’s sheer competition and hard racing, Saturday’s happenings are expected to be off the charts. One thing’s for sure. Unless things go bad in a major way, the PAL-U crew will definitely be making a return appearance in the Land of Lincoln in the future.

So until next time, we’ll be directing sending potential customers from Curry’s camp for kids to the infamous Smash, and rollin’ em around!

RACE NOTES…
-BILLY MOYER steadily finished second to fast qualifier MIKE MULLVAIN in the dash to start on the front row of the main event. When the green flew Moyer flew by Mullvain down the back chute to take the lead. Ten laps later a straightaway separated himself from the field. On lap 16 a caution allowed O’Neal to close and keep the lead to a half straightaway before once again Moyer rolled out to a straightaway. Late in the race, while the traffic was picked off the biggest problem was a cushion that forced him out of the gas a little longer than necessary. In the final five trip, Billy nursed his Rayburn along the ledge to the finish in a bit of a yawner.

-DON O’NEAL’s wildest moments of the night came in the dash he made on Summernationals points. While racing with Weaver for the final transfer spot, Donnie O snuck under off two. After a spin by May, Weaver attempted to go through an imaginary hole on the bottom on the restart. The result was Weaver getting into O’Neal. When Weaver didn’t lift, O’Neal did the same and the pair went through the infield. When the duo came back onto the track down the back chute, Weaver stopped in three brining out a yellow that sent O’Neal to the pits with a flat. When Pierce, Erb and May jammed up in the restart sending May spinning, O’Neal returned to claim the final transfer spot from the dash. In the main event, the Real Deal followed Erb around the outside early to go to third. When the Hoosiers warmed up, O’Neal went to the hub to work by Erb. After Clendenen went by then faded, O’Neal lead the parade of Pierce and Erm along the bottom to finish second.

-BOB PIERCE dropped out of the dash on the last lap forcing him to run the heats. After a second to Drake, the Tall Cool One rolled from the 11th hole to charge through the field along the bottom. While Clendenen drew the eyes of the fans, Pierce quietly picked off car after car. Even a jump of the cushion while running 5th didn’t allow anyone to go by. When the bobble gave Erb more of a cushion, Pierce sat up taller in the seat and ran down Erb and O’Neal. With 12 to go Erb left enough room off two for Bob to slide under and take 4th. As Clendenen slipped, the trio each took advantage and stepped up one spot.

-DENNIS ERB, JR. looked very impressive early on when he jumped to 2nd after starting 4th. Even as Moyer inched away, Erb hung tough fighting off O’Neal for 15 laps. After O’Neal took the spot, Dennis got going late in the race and worked on the left rear quarter panel of Pierce who in turn did the same to O’Neal at the finish.

-BILLY DRAKE marched to a heat win in front of Pierce to start 7th. While most of the night was spent in combat with Lanigan and May, Billy was able to break loose late in the race and slip by Clendenen to go to the pay window for 5th place money.

-DARRELL LANIGAN started 14th in his first feature at Fairbury. Quick from the start, highlights of Lanigan’s charge to 6th were when he, Clendenen and BOB POHLMAN danced three wide for a couple of laps while racing for 9th. After shaking the previous duo, Lanigan rolled up to May and Weaver where a bent right rear quarter panel was the remnants of tight racing in the Land of Lincoln.

-KEVIN WEAVER raced in the top five early on before a jump of the cushion in two dropped the Flatland Flash to 10th. From there Weaver was forced to play catch up going back to the rim dancing with Lanigan for 7th. As Clendenen faded, Weaver was the last to cabbage on the slip again going to the high side to get the spot on the last lap.

-BRIAN CLENDENEN looked like he was about to pull off the impossible when the rookie got rolling from 13th at the start. Coming to 7th in the first 16 trips (including taking part in a 6 car duel for 8th) , Clendenen’s flash of brilliance came when he rolled through the basement while the rest of the field chased the top. On the lap 17 restart, Clendenen wheeled his Bob Pierce creation under Weaver. Two laps later, May was just another victim. Erb fell just before Pohlman jumped the cushion in two. One lap before half way, O’Neal was sent to third down the back chute. While Moyer slowed up for traffic, Clendenen crept closer. With second virtually in sight, a yuke tire in two denied Brian’s date with destiny as a clip of the heavy rubber, sent him nearly spinning. From there the rookie was forced to swallow the bitter pill and slip to 8th.

-MIKE GLASSCOCK quietly put together a solid top ten performance after starting 15th.

-GARY MAY marched to a second heat win and ran in the top five early before dropping to 10th at the finish.

-SHANNON BABB dropped out after a tire swap on lap 16 didn’t help his cause.

-JEEP VAN WORMER pulled in with a flat when the track denied him of a yellow after a tussle with ROGER LONG.

Some of those who watched the main event were: Shane Cottle, Richey Hedrick, Sherry Heckenast, Reese O’Conner, Bob Freberg and Sam Epling.

As a whole, all three nights of racing in Illinois have been a great experience. The great fans, nice facilities and fantastic racing have made the experience of the PAL-U crew one worthy enough of a return in the future.

Off to Tri State Sunday night for a NALMS $5000 gig that conveniently comes off on the way home.

Until then, we’ll be more careful at the ice machines and rollin’ em around!

The race was called after 27 laps due to rain. The margin of victory was less than a car length, but it was about 10 car lengths back to third. 55 was the only car running at the end that wasn't on the lead lap and he had only been lapped on about lap 23. The only yellow flag in the race was on lap 7 due to a spin by 55.
Birkhofer was able to pull up along side O'Neal for a moment or two, but never really made a serious threat to lead.

Winner-BILLY MOYER

The Batesville Bandit rolled his Petroff Towing, Hoosier Tire, Watters Autoland, Clement Engine powered CJ Rayburn chassis into the Brownstown Speedway this evening and left with $10,000 and never donned a mask! Just like Jesse James used to do when he rode into town with his band of outlaws Moyer made the loot gathering look easy!!

Doug McCammon began the evening by touring the track with the fastest lap of 15.117.

The dash was won by The Flatland Flash, Kevin Weaver over Kevin Claycomb, Moyer (from his 9th starting position), McCammon,
Jeep Van Wormer and Duke Whiseant.

Heat race action saw Billy Drake claim the first heat over Greg Johnson and Gentleman Jim Curry.

The second heat laurels went to The Decatur Invader Shannon Babb as he won over Stevie Smith, and Steven Godsey.

The third heat was The Tall Cool One Bob Pierce debuting a new Pierceburn chassis as he went to the checkers ahead of The Modern Day Cowboy John Gill and Dan Sturgeon.

The fourth and final heat was claimed by The Frye Daddy Bill Frye over Steve Barnett and Donnie Barnhart.

The first consi which would add 2 of the final four starters to the field for the big show was called with only 5 laps completed after several cautions in the beginning of the race delayed the running. Brownstown Speedway rules dictate that consi's are 12 laps or 12 minutes whichever occurs first. When the final caution was displayed to end the race the two transfer positions would go to The Real Deal Don O'Neal and Doug Ault.

The second consi was topped by Ernie Barrow in a convincing win over Terry English.

With the field set the feature would start as follows:

Weaver Claycomb
Moyer McCammon
Van Wormer Whiseant
Drake Babb
Pierce Frye
Johnson Smith
Gill Barnett
Curry Godsey
Sturgeon Barnhart
O'Neal Barrow
Ault English

When the chekered flag fell over the field in the A-main $10,000 to win event it was
Moyer followed by Pierce, Weaver, Drake, Curry, Frye, Claycomb, McCammon, Whiseant, Babb, O'Neal, Johnson and Barnhart.

The UMP contingent rolls on from Brownstown for the UMP Summer Nationals Series ending gala at the Oaksahde Speedway in Wauseon, Ohio tomorrow evening for the $10,000 to win 60 lap A-main event, as well as the crowning of the 2K1 series titleist Billy Moyer who will ad an additional $10,000 bankroll compliments of U.M.P. to his account for winning the series points!

Winner-BILLY MOYER

Moyer takes another summer nationals victory!

1) Moyer
2) Shane Yoder
3) Don O'Neal

I believe Kevin Weaver was 4th, Bily Drake 5th (though I might have mixed those two up), Jeep Van Wormer 6th and Justin Paxton 7th.

Pierce didn't come for this one, which I was bummed about. But Moyer ran a great race and Yoder made it exciting, leading during most of the first half of the A feature. 65 late models on hand, so no problems in terms of car count. Just that there were a few people I'd been hoping to see who didn't choose to run it -- Greg Johnson, Steve Casebolt, and among the guys who've been running many of the summer national races Claycomb and Aukland.

It was a great evening, though, made all the better by the hospitality of Toxicmoe! Always fun to meet other 4Mers in person (or in this case, to realize that we already HAD met, but I didn't connect with the 4M name until tonight).
