PETROFF Posse takes 1-2-3 in PRAIRIE DIRT CLASSIC at Fairbury Complete Results....thanks SMASH

In a classic example of time warp, tonights event at the Fairbury American Legion Speedway represented one of the best ever in dirt late model racing in Billy Moyer against his understudy, and one of the brightest stars of the future of the sport of dirt late model racing in Shannon Babb; and when the checkered flag flew it was the Mowequa Missile outdueling the boss, the Batesville Bullet Billy Moyer to take home the winners share of $10,000 in the 13th Annual Prairie Dirt Classic, etching his name in the record book next to Moyer who has won the event multiple times.

The evening was totally dominated by Petroff Posse members Babb, O'Neal and Moyer with each winning their respective heats, Moyer winning the dash, O'Neal establishing a new track record of 12.90 breaking the previous record held by Tim Hitt, and capping the night by finishing in the win, place and show positions in the 60 lap A-main.

At the drop of the green it was Babb from his outside front row starting position jumping out to an early lead with Billy Drake, Moyer, O'Neal and Mark Burgtorf in persuit.

Babb would lead the event unchallenged while building a straightaway lead over Moyer until lap 34 when Moyer rapidly began closing on Babb.

On lap 44 Moyer would pass Babb on the low side off of turn 2 and go on to lead lap 45.

Unwilling to settle for second behind the boss, Babb turned up the wick and duplicated the move by Moyer, pasing Moyer on the bottom off of turn 2 on lap 45 and leading the event again on lap 46.

Babb would then go on to lead the remainder of the event with O'Neal passing Moyer on lap 50 to overtake the runner up position.

O'Neal was determined to give Babb a run for the money in closing to Babb's rear bumper in the closing laps, however, after suffering what appeared to be a broken a-frame on the left front, O'Neal was forced to settle for the runner up paycheck as he crossed the line with a seriously out of alignment left front!

Following Babb and O'Neal were Moyer to complete a clean swep of the top three positions for the Petroff Posse, Dennis Erb, Burgtorf, Roger Long, Weaver, Birkhoffer, Robert Pohlman and Eric Smith rounding out the top 10.

Babb was driving the Petroff Towing, B Auto Parts, CAR CITY, Watters Auto, Arkansas Motors, Hoosier by Smash, Jay Dickens Engines, Afco Race Products, JFR Graphics, Ringer Gloves, C. J. Rayburn chassied #18 Monte Carlo.

The REAL DEAL claims Stop #2 of NALMS Illinois Speedweek at Fairbury..Complete Results.... by SMASH

35 cars made the trek for event #2 of the 2k2 edition of the Northern All Stars/Petersen Aluminum Illinois Speedweeks at the Fairbury American Legion Speedway this evening.

The evening started with Bob Pierce touring the track with a time of 13.40 to record the evenings fast time.

The first heat was topped by Long over Frank Reaber and Bob Pierce with the top three from each heat earning a transfer to the A-Main. They were followed by Steve Barnett, Wes Steidinger and Brian Patterson.

The second heat was topped by Joe Harlan over Mike Mullvain and Mark Anderson. Non-transfer positions were taken by Tom Thoennes, Shawn Negangard, Rich Harlan, Don Hammer, Dan Walden and Mike Mataragas.

The third heat was topped by The Flatland Flash Kevin Weaver over Jr. Schickel and Dennis Erb. They were followed by Cody Hupp, Ron Donaldson, Ron Baumann and Todd Chitwood.

The fourth and final heat was won by O'Neal over Steve Hillard and Jim Curry. They were followed by Richie Hedrick, Doug Ault, Doug Smith, Matt Melvin and Jaime Zidar.

The first of two consi's which would transfer the top 3 from each to an A-Main starting berth was captured by Barnett over Steidinger and Negangard with the second consi taken by Hedrick over Cody Hupp and Gary May from an 11th place starting position as Gary put on quite a display of driving on the high side while most of the remainder of the pack chose to stay on the hub.

Doug Ault and Jamie Wilson took advantage of Northern All Stars points provisionals to make the starting grid for the 30 lap main event.

When the green flag flew it was Weaver jumping out front from his pole starting position ahead of Harlan, Long, O'Neal, Reaber Mullvain, Schickel, Jr., Pierce, Erb and Hillard.

Hillard worked past Erb on lap 2 with Schickel, Jr. working into the top 5 while Pierce worked his way to 6th on lap 3.

By lap 6 Gary May had once again worked the high side masterfully by taking over the 10th place spot from his 18th starting position.

Lap 12 would see O'Neal work his way into the show position of third while Weaver continued a torrid pace with only Long in between Weaver and the yellow #71 mount.

On lap 17 while Long was trying to work lapped trafic in the form of Wilson, O'Neal worked past Long to overtake the runner up position.

Weaver continued the fast track that he had set and by lap 17 had managed to build an almost straightaway lead over O'Neal and Long, all while O'Neal and Long battled for the runner up slot.

As the laps began to wane, O'Neal appeared to be closing on Weaver and it seemed he was going to wage a serious challenge when on lap 27 O'Neal had chased Kevin down and was applying pressure.

Lap 28 would be the magic number for O'Neal as he drove past Weaver to relegate Kevin to the runner up slot.

As the field approached the checkered flag Long would put Weaver back one more position by beating him to the stripe by mere inches in what was one of the best closing's of an event in recent observation.

Following the trio at the checker were Schickel, Jr., Pierce, Harlan, Barnett, Mullvain, Reaber, Hillard, Erb, Hedrick, Negangard, Curry, May, Ault, Steidinger, Wilson, Hupp and Anderson.

Congratulations to the entire Petroff Towing, B Auto, Hoosier by Smash, AFCO Race Products, HOME TEAM Inspection Service, KH Graphics, Pro Powered C. J Rayburn chassied team of Don O'Neal on their win as well as taking over the point lead in the batle for the speedweeks crown.

Tomorrow the traveling series will move to the Vermilion County Speedway for event #3 and the culmination and crowning of the 2k2 Northern All Stars/Petersen Aluminum ILLINOIS Speedweeks CHAMPION!

See ya all in Victory Lane!

The green light wasn't working most of the night.

Mostly just a bottom groove track...REALLY Glad someone found the high side, cuz freight trains aren't any fun at all.

May 18, 2002

Opening night at the American Legion Speedway in Fairbury IL had Roger Long winning the late model feature, followed by Gary May, Dennis Erb, Jr, Jay Sparks, Don Hammer, Eric Smith and Bob Freeburg. These were the only cars strong enough to finish the obstacle course that Mother Nature, and rebuilding the track during the off season, and again after the heat races would place in front of them. After four tries at starting the feature, Roger Long was given the pole, followed by Jeff Riblet for a single-file start. Riblet challenged for a few laps before his mount would break, then Long set sail to a half-lap lead until a late caution allowed May to close in, but with a lapped car between himself and Long, May had to settle for second. Long also had fast time at 13.10, not far off the track record of 12.967 held by Tim Hitt.

Richie Hedrick won the dash in his brand new Mastersbilt machine, giving him the feature pole position, only to have the steering column break loose on the first attempt at starting the feature, retiring him for the night. Heats were won by Kevin Paul over Jeff Hartzell, Corey Turner over Bobby Foster, and Jr Shickel over Jeff Riblet. The semi feature was won by Joe Harlan by a straightaway over Eric Smith.

Street stock feature went down to the line with Jim Felker leading only the most important lap, the last one. BJ Richardson and Darrell Dick had battled for the lead most of the race.

Modifieds had forty seven entries on hand, Tom Jensen turned in fast time, with Mr. Nice Guy Tommy Kroll of Chebanse winning the dash, his heat, and the feature.

Including the hornets, there were 133 cars in the pits for opening night, which saw flips, flips, and more flips. A total of five cars went upside down in four incidents. Two mods, three hornets, the most severe being Mike Porth's barrel roll on the frontstretch, at least three and a half rolls. All drivers were unhurt.
