VERMILION COUNTY SPEEDWAY
SUMMERNATIONAL RECAP

By Jack Taylor

(6/17/02) Before we get too far into this recap, understand that you will be reading a somewhat biased report from this writer which will tend to be boring, slanted, tedious, and typed with useless fingers at times. As you page down, you will find far more well- written articles on the events of the evening and there are some pics posted below the story to enhance the coverage.

57 UMP Late Model drivers pulled into the VCS pits for a shot at the $10,000 prize at nights end. 54 qualified, with 2 unable to make the attempt. Local hero, Bob Pierce, found misfortune during hot laps with an electrical failure and scurried home to grab another car (his Dream car at Eldora) and was unable to take qualifying.

The first qualifier out was Wendell Wallace and his fast time held throughout the round. The order for qualifying was Wallace, Ed Dixon, Billy Drake, Matt Taylor, Dan Schlieper, Shawn Toczak, Roger Long, Steve Hillard, Greg Johnson, Mike Bush, Don O'Neal, Scott James, Cody Hupp, Rick Aukland, Dennis Erb, Rodney Melvin, Don Hammer, Scott Bloomquist, Jimmy Burwell, Kevin Weaver, Eric Smith, Jr.Shickel, Tim Prince, Shannon Reed, Steve Sheppard, Jr., Joe Harlan, Jim Watson, Bob Pierce, Shannon Babb, Chris Dick, Jeff Martin, Bryan Clendenen, Jeep VanWormer, Tom Peltonen, Tom Thoenes, John Gill, Mark Anderson, Brian Birkhofer, Chuck Haga, Reece O'Connor, Rusty Schlenk, Bob Pohlman, Richie Hedrick, Ryan Dauber, Billy Moyer, Chub Frank, Mark Stetler, Jammie Wilson, Cory Mathew, Rick Sowders, Ed Woodard, Steve Barnett, Duke Whiseant, Rusty Coffman, Dan Walden, Ryan Dauber, and Jim Curry.

The 57 Late Models were a record  for VCS and the overflow crowd which kept filing into the parking lot was also a record for racing at VCS. Track officials had worked all day Saturday setting 8 more bleachers behind the back straight-away fence in the pit area and fans were allowed to sit in that section as the main grandstands were filled to overflowing. It was literally a standing-room only crowd.

Few fans departed the stands at the conclusion of the Late Model feature and stayed for the always entertaining UMP Modified feature event that followed. 40 Mods were on hand, along with 30 Super Streets to bring the car count to 127 pit-swelling machines.

Adults and children alike seemed to thoroughly enjoy the fireworks display prior and during the four-wide pace lap of the Late Models.  They also relished the thrill of Oakwood's Bob Pierce, after starting on the tail of Heat two, working his way to a third and making the feature show. And from the infield, it was very audible to hear the distain that fans have for Scott Bloomquist, who is probably one the greats in the sport of dirt racing.

For racing entertainment, a fan could not have desired much more and the entire staff at Vermilion County Speedway is to be complimented. The new look at VCS is appealing.

AND NOW FOR THE REST OF THE STORIES

Summernationals get into full swing at VCS

By: Toby Hallett

Danville, IL (June 16, 2002) - A record crowd packed the beautiful Vermilion County Speedway Sunday night as 57 of the top UMP Late Model drivers invaded for the third leg of the UMP Summernationals tour. The crowd entering the Speedway resembled one of a Winston Cup race as fans were forced to wait in long lines just to enter the front gate. With the capacity crowd, promoter Bill Marietta opened the pits to those fans that did not have a seat so all were accommodated!

Wendell Wallace was the first to qualify and he made it pay off. Wallace used the high side around the track to turn in a lap of 14.482. The only other drivers to come close to Wallace were, Rick Aukland and Kevin Weaver, those two turning in laps in the 14.5 second range.

Rick Aukland started on the pole of the nine-car trophy dash with the first six finishers making up the front three rows of the feature event. Wendell Wallace quickly jumped out to the lead and held that until Scott Bloomquist grabbed the lead on lap seven ensuring him the pole starting position in the feature. After Bloomquist crossed the stripe, Wallace, Aukland Billy Drake, Steve Hillard and Kevin Weaver filled the front three rows by virtue of their top six finishing spots.

Don O'Neal started at the point of heat number one and cruised to victory, however the race was on for the third and final transfer spot. Junior Shickel, Joe Harlan, Jammie Wilson and at times Stave Barnett all battled side by side for about 5 laps trying to gain that last starting spot. On the last lap coming out of turn four Shickel and Harlan got together and the "Franklin Flyer" dipped low and took the third position away from both of them! Jeep VanWormer followed O'Neal for second spot at the stripe.

The second heat race of the night got the crowd into frenzy! Bob Pierce who lives only a few miles from VCS had trouble with his primary car as a fire burnt up all of the electrical components before he could even hot lap the car. Pierce returned home and rolled out a second car returning to the track just in time to see qualifications end, so he was forced to the back of the second heat race. With that in mind Billy Moyer wasted no time in getting a huge lead on the field as Pierce began to work his way through traffic. By lap three Pierce had moved up to the seventh position from 12th! On lap seven the hometown hero got around Rodney Melvin to grab the fourth spot, all this time Moyer easily lead Dan Schlieper by almost a straight-away! Pierce stole the show though as he took the third spot guaranteeing himself a starting position in the A-main on a night when those spots were hard to come by. The crowd let out a thunderous roar as Pierce had shown them what hard work and determination can bring you.

Another local driver took the third heat race checkers, Roger Long of Fithian, IL used his patented high side driving style to earn the win. A newcomer to the speedway, Chub Frank didn't take long to learn the surface and the right line. Frank settled in after the first four laps and set his sights on second place. Richie Hedrick followed Frank and Long to gain the final transfer spot.

Some say that VCS is perfectly suited for the driving style of John Gill and Sunday night was no different. Gill got by Greg Johnson on the start and led every lap of the final heat race. Shannon Babb held off Greg Johnson for second with both earning their way in the feature.

Dennis Erb Jr. was able to best Rodney Melvin and Duke Whiseant in the first of two-consolation race but all were able to make the final cut as the top three were taken into the feature. Jim Curry and Brian Birkhofer ended the second consi in the closest finish in VCS history! As Curry came off of turn four he dipped below a lapped machine and Birkhofer took the high route around and both crossed the finish line at almost he exact same time! It was found that Curry did in fact edge Birkhofer out by about an inch! Scott James watched as the two put on a great show ending in the third spot.

The four wide salute to the fans is enough to send chills down any race fans back but, add in the fireworks display and you know something special is about to take place. Wendell Wallace got the early jump in the race but that was nullified when Chub Frank spun before a lap was completed. On the restart Scott Bloomquist got the advantage and looked as if he had things well in hand. Just as Bloomquist began to lap cars the yellow cam out for Scott James who slowed on the backstretch and as the caution flag flew Don O'Neal and Kevin Weaver made contact sending Weaver hard into the front stretch concrete. Weaver's car was badly damaged but he was ok. On the restart after a red flag to remove Weaver's car, Bloomquist stood on the throttle and sparks flew out of the exhaust! Heavy smoke began pouring from the machine at lap 17 and it was becoming apparent that the motor would not last. Another 15 laps clicked off before the motor finally let go ending his bid for the $10,000 payday. Wendell Wallace now found himself right where he started the night, at the head of the field. Wallace took no time on the restart and cruised to his first win in only two tries at Vermilion County Speedway! Rick Aukland, Billy Drake, Steve Hillard and Bill Moyer rounded out the top five.

"The racetrack was really tough to pass on tonight so I knew whoever got the jump on the start would be tough to beat" said Wallace. "Its just hard to make these racetracks live when you start in the sunlight so we knew we had to qualify well and go from there. It really feels good after I spun out last night its good to get back on track tonight. We left the MARS series behind at home leading the points to try and come up here and win some of these races and so we feel pretty good about tonight. I stayed back from him (Bloomquist) a little bit because I knew after seeing the smoke and getting oil on my shield that he was about to blow up and I didn't want to hit him when he slowed, so I hung back and waited." When I asked Wendell about his plans for the summer he offered this, "We are gonna look at the points and see where we are at and determine what we will do from there for the summernationals."

Wendell Wallace led the final nine laps of the 40 lap main event to capture the largest payday in VCS history. Everyone on the staff at VCS should be very proud of their record breaking night and all the fans should mark July 29th on their calendar for a return trip to Danville, IL and Vermilion County Speedway for the un-sanctioned $10,000-to-win show!

WENDELL WALLACE TAKES 10 GRAND
By Smash the Loud Pedal

(6/16/02) 57 cars invaded the Vermillion County Speedway tonight in search of the $10,000 payday that would be the winners sum, and when the evening ended it was the Batesville Bullet, Wendell Wallace sitting in victory lane holding the oversized check for $10k!

After setting the fastest qualifying mark as the first car out Wallace was beat at the line in the dash by Scott Bloomquist, the pair towed Rick Aukland, Billy Drake, Steve Hillard and Kevin Weaver to the A-main from their respective dash finishes.

The first heat was topped by Don O'Neal over Jeep VanWormer, Steve Barnett, Jr. Schickel, Jammie Wilson, Joe Harlan, Duke Whiseant and Brian Clendenen.

The second heat saw Mr. UMP Summer Nat's Billy Moyer ahead of Dan Schlieper, Bob Pierce, Dennis Erb, Rodney Melvin and Ryan Dauber.

The third heat was Roger Long taking the win over The Shoestring Traveler Chub Frank, Richie Hedrick, Jim Curry, Ed Dixon, Shawn Toczek, Steve Sheppard, Jr., Matt Taylor and Jimmy Burwell.

The fourth and final heat was won by The Modern Day Cowboy John Gill over Shannon Babb, Greg Johnson, Brian Birkhofer and Scott James.

The consi's which would transfer the final three from each to the A-main to complete the 24 car starting field were won by Erb over Melvin and Duke Whiseant, and Curry ahead of Birkhofer and James.

When the green flag flew on the main event it was Bloomquist jumping out to an early lead in convincing fashion ahead of Wallace, Aukland, Billy Drake, Hillard, Weaver, Moyer and O'Neal.

The first caution would show on lap 15 when Don O'Neal and Kevin Weaver made contact on the frontstretch coming off of turn four. Weavers car took a HARD right hand turn and headed straight into the wall at full spoeed ahead. Weaver, although a little dazed, seemed to be uninjured. His mount however, was much worse for the wear.

After the brief red to clear Weavers car from the track, the green was again displayed for the restart and sparks were flying from the undercarriage of Bloomquists car. However, Bloomquist continued to lead the field and even seemed to be pulling away slightly despite the cracking and popping from his powerplant and a smoke show that would make any mosquito exterminator envious!

Lap 31 would be the end of Bloomquists evening as his motor gave up and Bloomquist brought out the caution as he sat stopped in turns three and four with flames under the hood! After being extinguished the green was once again displayed and it was all Wally as he took to the hub and never looked back in his run to the checkers. Following Wallace at the stripe were Aukland, Drake, Hillard, Moyer, Babb, Schlieper, O'Neal, Frank, Pierce, Van WOrmer, Erb, Barnett, Johnson and Melvin.

All in all, a great show with multi groove passing up to the point of the feature when the track took rubber and passing was at a premium.

In return for the efforts put forth this season so far by track promoter Bill Marietta and crew, the speedway was blessed this evening with the largest crowd in the history of The Vermillion County Speedway!

My hats off to the entire track crew and looking forward to the return of the big gun late models to the track on July 29th as they seek out another $10,000 to win payday!

Babb Banks $5,000 At
Hales Corners Speedway
By John Shea
Franklin, Wis., June 19-Shannon Babb of Decatur, Ill. passed Dan
Schlieper with six laps to go and went on to victory in the 40-lap UMP Late
Model Summernationals feature on Wednesday night at the Hales Corners
Speedway.
The win was Babb's first-ever at the third-mile clay oval and was worth
$5,000.
Schlieper settled for second in the final order, with Kevin Weaver third,
Billy Moyer fourth and Don O'Neal fifth.
Schlieper began the main event from the third position and shot into the
lead on the opening lap as Moyer, Babb, Jeep Van Wormer and Gordie Seegert
Jr. followed. Moyer remained second until Babb took the spot at lap 12.
Babb closed the gap on Schlieper and the two bumped several times while
fighting for position, allowing the now-third running car of Weaver to shoot
past both and into the lead at lap 29. Schlieper quickly regrouped and
worked his way back past Weaver using the inside line in turns three and four
to begin lap 31. Babb followed Schlieper past Weaver and the two resumed
their battle for the top spot.
Schlieper began to lap some of the slower cars at the back of the field
at lap 33, and that was all Babb needed as he quickly closed in on Schlieper
and roared past to take command using the inside line up the backstretch.
Once in front, Babb pulled away and picked up the $5,000 top prize.
UDTRA star Scott Bloomquist finished sixth, with Billy Drake, Bret
Sievert, Van Wormer and Seegert Jr. rounding out the top 10.
Racing continues Saturday night, June 22 at the Hales Corners Speedway
with a full program of UMP late model, sportsmen, modified and Hales Whales
racing. Qualifying begins at 6:15 p.m. with racing to follow. Hales Corners
Speedway is located on Hwy. 100 in Franklin, one-half mile south of Forest
Home Avenue, next to Hiller Ford. For more information, call (414) 778-4700

Babb Doubles His Pleasure at Crown Point Summernationals

by Paul D. Bayne

CROWN POINT, Ind. (June 20) - After five events of the 27-date 2002 UMP Summernationals tour, no one driver had visited victory lane on more than one occasion. Shannon Babb of Decatur, IL put a end to that, as he powered his way to his second consecutive UMP Summernationals win in as many nights, taking top honors in the 40-lap special at Crown Point Speedway in Northwest Indiana. With the win, Babb earned $5,000 and let the competition know he intends to be a contender come mid-July when the tour concludes. Babb had won the previous night at the Hales Corners Speedway in Franklin, WI.

"I got to give it all to my crew. We blowed the motor up last night in this car and got the other one out and got it prepared and we ran good last night and they worked they tails off today, and I knew when I took off it was a gamble with what I went with on tires and I was no good on top. So I knew plain and simple, black and white, I had to be on the bottom," said Babb. "This whole deal is kind of like a cruise, in that each night you go out and just hope for a good finish. If you gear up to go all out at the beginning, it'll just wear you out so much you won't be there at the end," he added.

As the 20-car field rolled around the fast 1/3-mile semi-banked clay bullring, polesitter Ted Loomis overzealously jumped the gun in a attempt to distance himself from the field. Upon entering turn one, Loomis got loose and looped his car in front of the oncoming field. Only the car of Dan Schlieper was able to escape the logjam that brought the field to a standstill. Bloomquist, who has yet to find victory lane on the 2002 UMP Summernationals tour, escaped a scare as his car appeared to be headed for the hook without even turning a lap. After some on-track repairs to his car, Bloomquist was able to rejoin the field in his original starting position. Don O'Neal also suffered heavy right side sheet metal damage but was able to continue.

A complete restart was called for and on the next attempt, Loomis again got the run on Schlieper off of turn four, but on lap two the caution was unfurled again as Steve Casebolt Jr. and Mike Kingma tangled in turn one. On the ensuing restart, Jeep Van Wormer got a bit over-anxious and punted the rear end of Frank Reaber. This caused a multi-car chain reaction behind the duo that claimed Todd McGarr and Shawn Toczek as it victims.

When racing resumed, O'Neal whistled by both Loomis and Schlieper to grab the lead on lap two, only to have his car suddenly lose power and come to a halt in turn three one lap later. O'Neal then was placed at the rear of the field for being responsible for the caution, which meant their would be some action in the back of the pack. Schlieper's night would come to an end on lap five, as a broken left front tie rod would send him shuffling backwards. Babb meanwhile, had worked his way around Bloomquist for the third spot, then honed in on Billy Drake for second. On lap nine, Babb was able to power underneath Loomis and take over a lead he would not relinquish. Bloomquist also got by Drake to claim the second spot, while Loomis was pushed back to seventh.

At the halfway mark of the race it was Babb opening up a ten-car length lead over Bloomquist, and Drake, while Kevin Weaver and Moyer engaged it what was the most entertaining battle on the speedway. Over half the race these two swapped the fourth spot with loads of side-by-side action that delighted the many large crowd in attendance.

The remainder of the race would go caution free, as Babb built a staggering lead over Bloomquist, who had his hands full of Drake. Drake took a look several times to the inside of Bloomquist, but momentum off the high side kept Bloomquist out front. At the stripe it was Babb, winning by a landslide ahead of Bloomquist, Drake, Weaver, and Moyer, followed by Rodney Melvin, O'Neal, Loomis, Reaber, and Atkinson.

The race was slowed by four cautions, all of which occurred in the first two laps. There were three lead changes among three drivers. Only seven of the twelve remaining cars finished on the lead lap.

Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN, began the evening posting the time to beat in qualifying at 13.313. Bloomquist, the second car out of the gate, looked to have the premier qualifying run until O'Neal, the twenty-eighth qualifier, lowered the standard to 13.241.

The nine-lap dash, to determine the first three rows of the feature, was made up of the six fastest qualifiers, along with the 2001 Crown Point track champion, the 2001 UMP national champion, and the highest in UMP Summernationals points not qualifying in the top six. After nine lightning fast laps, Loomis, the local hotshoe of Kingston, IL, earned the right to start on the pole by defeating Schlieper (Pewaukee, WI), O'Neal, Billy Drake (Bloomington, IL), Bloomquist, Babb, Billy Moyer, Al Atkinson, and Rodney Melvin.

In preliminary 10-lap heat race action, the top four cars from each heat were awarded starting spots in the 20-car field.

In heat one, Moyer sailed away from his predecessors for the easy triumph. Frank Reaber, Jeep Van Wormer, and John Provenzano each also transferred to the feature lineup.

Heat number two was made up of nearly all local drivers with the exception of Frank Heckenast. Atkinson of Kenosha, WI, the defending track champion at Crown Point Speedway, spent eight laps trying to get around Guy Volk, but finally made the pass and cruised to the win. Volk nabbed second, followed by Heckenast, and Todd McGarr.

The third and final heat had perhaps the most muscle of the three heats, and when it concluded, it was Gibson City's (IL) Kevin Weaver scoring the win convincingly over Melvin, the 2001 UMP national points champion, Steve Casebolt Jr., and Shawn Toczek.

With eighteen cars now locked into the field, a consolation race was contested to determine the final two spots that would round out the field. After 12-laps of racin' and chasin', Mike Kingma of Lowell, IN held off the charges of current Sunoco American Late Model Series points' leader Greg Johnson of Edinburgh, IN to score the win. Scott Martin, Reese O'Connor, and Steve Metz rounded out the top five.

NUTS & BOLTS

Babb, driving the Car City/Petroff Towing/Rayburn/Jay Dickens/Monte Carlo, became the first repeat winner on the tour, while also giving the Petroff Posse its' third straight win and fourth overall in just six starts. Don O'Neal of Martinsville, IN picked up the opener at Western Kentucky Speedway, while Billy Moyer of Batesville, AR won at Twin Cities Raceway Park in North Vernon, IN.

Eddie Leviner of Merrillville, IN, found trouble in hotlaps as he collided with the slowing car of Frank Reaber. The contact was enough that Leviner was forced into the role of spectator, or so he thought. To the rescue came fellow competitor Al Atkinson, who just so happened to be hauling his brand new GRT. Atkinson obliged Leviner in offering up his new ride so that Leviner could compete in heat race action. While Leviner did not transfer through his heat, nor even run the consolation event, the gesture showed what true sportsmanship and friendship these two drivers have had for each other over the past few years.

One of the most notable changes that one would notice about Leviner is his new found physique. Leviner has shed some 51 pounds. during the off-season, and he was quick to credit a new healthy eating lifestyle combined with regular exercise as the key to his weight loss. "I was getting tired at the end of some of these longer races last year," he said, "and I knew I had to do something to change that. I joined a gym and workout everyday now, plus I don't eat red meats, no fried foods, and drink plenty of water. I drink a gallon and a half a day," said the 2000 Indiana State UMP champion. Leviner is sponsored by Southlake Dodge

Sixteen local drivers made up the field of 32 cars on hand, with 31 of them taking time. Four visiting Illinois drivers also journeyed to Crown Point. After just six events now, only nine drivers have participated in every event thus far.

Donations were being taken at several trailers for fellow driver Wendell Wallace, who's hauler was destroyed by fire this past Monday at Twin Cities Raceway Park in North Vernon, IN, Wallace was not in attendance at Crown Point.

Billy Drake became just the 6th different winner tonight in Event #12 of the 2002 Summer Nationals at Paducah International Raceway.

Drake driving the familiar #9 Mastersbilt at a track that has been very good to him, took the lead on lap 31 off of turn 4 in traffic and never looked back to lead the remainder of the event and claim the $5,000.00 paycheck that went to him for his efforts!

Shannon Babb began the evening by recording the fast time with a lap of 16.492.

The dash was won by current 2002 UMP National Championship point leader Terry English over Jeep Van Wormer, Drake, Billy Moyer, Babb, Rodney Melvin, Joe Morris, Scott Bloomquist and Dan Schlieper.

The first heat was won by Bob Pierce over Morris, Phil Walker and Ted Loomis.

The second heat was won by Bloomquist over Kevin Claycomb, Kevin Weaver and Billy Faust.

The third and final heat was topped by Schlieper over Brett Larson, Bill Millikan and Reece O'Connor.

The consi was won by Don O'Neal over Gary Keeling.

When the green flag flew on the feature event it was Jeep Van Wormer jumping out to the lead in commanding fashion and he built a 12 car length lead over English early in the event.

Lap 11 saw Drake at the very bottom of the track working the hub and creating three wide racing with Moyer and Babb. Several laps later Bloomquist would enter the mix with creating a 4 car battle.

A lap 19 caution would see Terry English exit the track and put an end to his night.

On the restart it was Van Wormer with Moyer, Babb, Drake and Bloomquist rounding out the top 5 positions.

On lap 22 Drake would pass Babb. Babb would lose another spot on lap 22 to Bloomquist.

On lap 29 Drake worked past Moyer in traffic to overtake the runner up position.

Lap 31 would see Drake move to the forefront after Jeep brushed the wall several different times and began to fade somewhat.

Van Wormer would lose another position to Moyer on lap 35, and yet another to Bloomquist on lap 36, with Babb also passing Jeep on lap 37.

On the last lap Bloomquist was able to make a pass on Moyer to earn runner up pay and points for the evening.

Following Drake, Bloomquist and Moyer at the stripe were Babb, Van Wormer, Weaver, Morris, O'Neal, Claycomb and Pierce.

The 30 lap feature started green, but didnt make it out of turn one that way, as Jack Hewitt spun in turn one, bringing out a yellow flag. The double file restart would be a clean one, with Shannon Babb darting out to the lead on the bottom, with Billy Moyer, Bob Pierce, and Scott Bloomquist going three wide down the backstretch for the second spot. Moyer would prevail in that battle taking second, Bloomer going to third, and Pierce back to fourth. Don O'Neal would make a pass on Pierce for fourth and move up to take third away from Bloomer on the low side coming out of turn two. Babb, at this point had about eight car lengths on Moyer, with Moyer trying to reel him in. Bloomer was not done with O'Neal, however, as he would pull alongside of O'Neal on the highside and go by to take back the third spot. Bloomer had obviously found something on the top side, because he quickly caught up to Moyer and got around him on the top side for second. Moyer was not undaunted though, pulling right back beside Bloomer making it a fight. Bloomer would win round two though, pulling back out in front of Moyer. If Babb had a rear view mirror in his ride, he would have been seeing a green and black Warrior coming fast after him. Babb put some distance between he and Bloomer when he began the lapping process on Dan Walden. Babb would have some trouble lapping the next backmarker, being the #76 of Kruckeberg, allowing Bloomer to catch up. Moyer would make easy work of the lap cars, however, and catch up to Bloomer and ultimately make a pass for the second spot. Unfortunately for Moyer, the yellow would fly on lap 16, for the stalled mount of Kruckeberg. Moyer would be placed back in the third slot due to going back to the last scored lap. When the field hit the cone for the green, Bloomer went straight to the top, getting beside Babb, and going door to door down the backshute. Bloomer would see his first lead on lap 18 when he inched out in front of Babb down the frontstretch. Behind the two leaders, Pierce would finally get out of the fifth spot, getting by O'Neal for fourth. The field would slow for the third time on lap 20, when a tire flew off the Mike Munson mount in turn one. With the field bunched up again on the restart, Pierce would try his hand with Moyer for the third spot. Pierce's hand was stronger than Moyer's, as Pierce would take over third. Back up front, Babb would make another move on Bloomer, pulling beside him and getting by for the point. Moyer's run was getting towards being on the bad side as he would lose his fourth spot to O'Neal. O'Neal was not done yet, though, as he would get by Pierce for the third spot just a bit later. Babb and Bloomer would see the five to go signal, meaning it was time to turn up the volume, as Bloomer would pull up beside Babb one more time. Bloomer would edge out in front of Babb with just 4 to go on the high side. Babb, just half a lap later, said "no way Bloomer" and put the move on the Yangster on the low side with 3 to go. Coming down to the stripe with two to go, Bloomer would make his winning pass coming out of turn two on, you guessed it, the high side. Bloomer would take the checkers for the first time in the Summernationals in front of Babb, O'Neal, Pierce, Terry English, Moyer, Kevin Weaver, Dennis Erb, Steve Barnett, and Jeep VanWormer would round out the top ten. Bloomquist is sponsored by: Miller Brothers Coal, Hawkeye Trucking, Lane Automotive, and his chassis of choice...a Warrior

Very good night of racing, got to see two modifieds get upside down, with one flipping out of the ballpark. Ill be at Farmer City this Friday, be sure to say hi, ill be sitting next to my baby Torri and RaceNut

When the green was displayed for the restart it was O'Neal followed by Pohlman, Van WOrmer, Tyne, Gill, Weaver, Moyer, Provenzano, Babb and Bloomquist.

BLACK SUNSHINE WINS SPOON RIVER and extends UMP Summer Nationals Point lead... story by SMASH

Black sunshine Scott Bloomquist extended his UMP Summer Nationals Point lead that he took over last night, by virtue of winning the 40 lap $5,000 to win A-Main event at the Spoon River Speedway in Canton, Illinois.

The evening began with Bloomer setting fast time with a mark of 14.381, best of the 46 cars on hand.

The dash was won by Billy Drake over Bloomquist, Bob Pierce, Don O'Neal, Shannon Babb, Kevin Weaver, Brent Larson, Billy Moyer and Brad Denney.

The first heat was topped by Gentleman Jim Curry over Dennis Erb and Todd Bennett.

The second heat went to Moyer ahead of Matt Taylor and Jason Feger.

The third heat was captured by Billy Tuckwell over Brad Denney and Clint Hines.

The fourth and final heat went to John Gill over Jeep Van Wormer and Reece O'Connor.

The first of two consis was won by Steve Lance over Brent Larson with the second consi going to Steve Hillard ahead of Eric Smith.

When the green flag fell on the 40 lap A-Main event it was BLACK SUNSHINE Scott Bloomquist jumping to the lead ahead of Bob Pierce, Billy Drake, Don O'Neal, Shannon Babb, Kevin Weaver, Billy Moyer and John Gill. The caution would come out with just 1 lap completed as Reece O'Connor came to a stop on the front stretch.

When the green resumed it was Bloomquist leading the pack and pulling away to a healthy lead over the field, with Bloomquist holding a good 10-12 car length lead by lap 6.

Shannon Babb, the winningest driver thus far on the UMP Summer Series was steadily pacing his way to the front from his 5th starting spot and passed Pierce to take over the runner up position on lap 11.

With Bloomquist having lapped Gary Cook, Jr. on lap 10 the field was working lapped traffic handily, lapping Eric Smith for the first of two times on lap 13.

Lap 15 would see Larson and Todd Bennett both go 1 in arrears as Babb was closing on the rear bumper of the yangmobile. Denney would go down 1 on lap 16.

Lap 23 it was Lance going down a lap, with Eric Smith falling 2 laps ion arrears on lap 26. Feger would be the next victim on lap 28.

Lap 30 would see Matt Taylor lose 1 to the leaders and Denney would go minus 2.

The whole while it was a Bloomquist and Babb event with all eyes glued to the two as they waged a hard fought battle.

Van Wormer went down 1 on lap 32, Hillard on lap 33, Tuckwell on lap 35 and Cook, Jr. would fall to minus 2 on lap 38.

Despite numerous challenges Babb would be forced to settle for the bridesmaid position this time as BLACK SUNSHINE rolled to the checkered just ahead of Babb, Pierce, O'Neal, Weaver, Drake, Moyer, Gill and Curry.

Tomorrow night will be a little different track conditions as the UMP Summer Nationals series 2k2 edition rolls into the MIGHTY MACON SPEEDWAY, the little track that could, for the 2002 edition of the HERALD-REVIEW 100 lap event. Always an action packed, nail biting adventure and a must see for any true dirt late model fan! If you can only go to one event this weekend, this my friends is one to see, they will sell you a ticket for a seat, but you will only need the edge!!! See ya all in victory lane!

Herald and Review and 95Q 100

Kevin Weaver prevailed tonight in his effort to become a three time winner of the Herald and Review 100. The first of 36 drivers on the track for time trials, Weaver turned in fast time of 10.687, just .180 seconds shy of Joe Ross Jr's track record. The dash went to Billy Moyer over Weaver, Scott Bloomquist, Marvin Burton, Joe Ross Jr, and Bob Pierce. Billy Drake, Mark Faust, and Shannon Babb were then relegated to run heat races. Heat race number one went to Drake over current track points leader and national UMP rookie point leader Brian Shirley, with Justin Allgaier in tow. Heat number two saw Don O'Neal emerge victorious over Mark Faust and Dennis Erb, Jr. The third heat had Shannon Babb hold off Matt Taylor and Steve Sheppard Jr for the win. The final heat featured a very close battle with the winner being Jason Fegers over Chris Carlson and Nick Bauman.

The 17 car semi-feature saw a detemined Danny MaGuire hold off Aaron Bauman and Kerby Damery for the win.

Come feature time, Moyer and Weaver started front row, with Bloomquist and Burton behind them, Ross and Pierce in row three. At the outset, Moyer took off, but by lap 20, Weaver managed to get around Moyer, with Ross, Pierce, Drake, O'Neal, Babb, Bloomquist all racing and dicing for second and third place. Lap 58 saw a slight break in the action when Dennis Erb, Jr was left sitting sideways in the track, then being hit by both Pierce and Moyer. Pierce went to the pits, and Moyer's mount had a very noticeable steering problem, but his perseverance allowed him to stay on the lead lap. The top five all battled the rest of the way in the hundred lapper, with Don O'Neal passing Ross for second place, only to then catch an infield tire, tearing up his steering capabilities, and slipping back to fifth place. Weaver won, with Ross a close second, Drake in third, Babb fourth, O'Neal and Moyer holding out to be the last cars on the lead lap. Bloomquist would finish seventh, being lapped on lap #90.

FARMER CITY

July 5, 2002

The UMP Summernationals made it's annual visit to Farmer City Raceway, and as normal, the fans got to see a great show! Although the car count was down to only 38 late models, the near-capacity crowd was first wowed by Scott Bloomquist turning in fast time at 12.991. The 'local' drivers then put on a show in the dash, with Bloomquist on the pole, and Roger Long on the outside, Long took the win over ninth place starter Shannon Babb, Bloomquist, Justin Allgaier, Kevin Weaver, Joe Ross, Jr and Matt Taylor.

The first heat went to Matt Taylor over Bob Pierce, Don O'Neal, Jr Shickel, Doug McCammon and Todd Bennett.

Heat number two saw Billy Moyer cruise to the win over Mark Anderson, with Steve Hillard edging out Don Hammer and Cody Hupp. The final heat saw Dennis Erb, Jr battle to the win over Mike Mullvain, Ryan Dauber, Jeep Van Wormer and Jeff Martin.

Semi feature action was to be tight, as only the winner would advance. The first semi went to Jason Fegers over Jeff Martin, Billy Drake, Brent Larson, and Doug McCammon. The second semi had Todd Bennett over Gary May, Cody Hupp and Tim Routson.

The feature event was proof that Bob Sargent knows how to prepare a fast, driveable race track. The fans in the main grandstands ate some dirt, thanks to the breeze from the east, but were treated to a great race in the process. Shannon Babb took off in the the lead from his outside front row starting position. Bloomquist tried every way possible, but just could not wrestle the lead from Babb, except for sliding by in traffic at lap 19, only to watch as Babb slid his way back to the lead one lap later. Babb never did get more than a car length lead, as the leaders diced in and out of lapped traffic. The feature ended with Babb winning over Bloomquist, with Ross, Pierce, O'Neal, and Weaver all nose to tail behind them. Dennis Erb was seventh, Billy Moyer eighth and Roger Long ninth, the last car on the lead lap. Seventeen of the twenty starters were still running at the end of the caution-free 40 lap race.

Sun July 7- TBA

*Just a short note-Thanks to Racenut for battling the late hours during his favorite week of Racenut Sightings while we slipped away this week for a little R & R. The week was very warm and it looks as if the racetracks were also. With  a week remaining, the $100,000 prize is still up for grabs in a very action-packed Summernational series. Many thanks to 4M's members and a special thanks to Smash (aka Terry).

Moyer races to UMP Summernationals win in Shawano

by Bert Lehman

SHAWANO, Wis. (July 8, 2002) - Billy Moyer proved to be the strongest driver out of the 25 drivers on hand at the UMP Summernationals late model race sponsored by the Mohican North Star Casino and Bingo, at the Shawano Speedway, as he collected the $10,000 first place prize. Scott Bloomquist set a new track record of 20.974 seconds, breaking the mark of 21.475 set last summer by Steve Francis.

Scott Bloomquist sat on the pole for the 40-lap feature, but was shuffled back a few spots on the opening lap, as Don O誰eal grabbed the lead with Kevin Weaver taking the second spot, followed by Bloomquist, hard-charging Billy Moyer and Bret Sievert. Moyer wasted no time in his charge to the front, as he moved to the runner-up spot on the second lap, with Weaver falling to fourth. Two laps later, Moyer ducked underneath O誰eal to grab the top spot, as Bloomquist began to pressure O誰eal for the second spot and grabbed the spot on the next lap.

Bloomquist wasn稚 content with second though, as he grabbed the lead from Moyer on lap six. Moyer then began applying heavy pressure on Bloomquist, even making contact once coming out of corner four. Just as Bloomquist started lapping cars, Moyer痴 heavy pressure paid off, as he grabbed the top spot 10 laps into the race. The top three cars of Moyer, Bloomquist and O誰eal distanced themselves from the rest of the pack, as they were weaving their way through traffic.

The top five stayed the same for the next 13 laps. With Moyer, Bloomquist and O誰eal bumper-to-bumper going through traffic, the first caution flag came out. On the restart, Bloomquist pulled alongside Moyer, but Moyer fended him off. Over the next five laps, Moyer pulled away to a slight lead, and O誰eal pulled alongside Bloomquist who was running the high side. Bloomquist then slowed coming out of turn four, with something breaking on his car and ending his night.

The restart saw Moyer continue his fast pace, with O誰eal, Weaver, Schlieper and Brian Birkhofer following. Over the remaining laps of the race, the most passing was taking place in the middle of the pack, as Jeep Van Wormer found the high groove to his liking, passing Shannon Babb and Ken Schrader to secure the seventh spot. It was Moyer痴 race though, as he went on to the $10,000 win. O誰eal, Weaver, Schlieper, Birkhofer, Sievert, Van Wormer, Babb, Schrader and Dennis Erb Jr. rounded out the top 10.

Racing continues Saturday night, July 13, as the IRA Sprint Cars invade the Shawano Speedway. WISSOTA Late Models and IMCA Stock Cars are also scheduled to race. For more information about the Shawano Speedway visit its Web site at www.shawanospeedway.com or call (715) 526-5419.

VAN WORMER wins HARTFORD UMP Summer Nat's event #24
By Smash

Jeep Van Wormer who has flirted with victory several times this season in the 2k2 UMP Summer Nationals found his way to victory lane tonight in the Wolverine state by gracing the victory lane at the HARTFORD Speedway Park.

Van Wormer showed poise and grace as he took his VAN WORMER Management, Miller Bros. Coal #55 Warrior chassis from the outside front row starting position and led green to checkered unchallenged for the $10,000 winners share of the pot!

The evening began with Shannon Babb, the 2k2 Summer Nationals hottest driver and fresh off of a $20,000 win the previous night recording the fastest qualifying lap.

The dash was won by Greg Johnson over Van Wormer, Don O"neal, Scott Bloomquist, Babb, Ryan Dauber, Dan Schlieper and Kris Patterson. Billy Moyer, the ninth dash entry did not finish the race after he pegged the wall in turns 3 and 4 and was collected by Patterson. Moyers spin came on the heels of the track prep crew watering the race track after qualifying leaving a slicker than ice surface for the dash.

The first heat was won by Schlieper over John Gill, Steve Casebolt and Matt Miller.

The second heat was topped by Rick DeLong over Brian Ruhlman, Hillard Miller and Patterson.

The third and final heat was won by Moyer over Aaron Scott, Shawn Toczek and Jason Beckwith.

The consi was topped by local hotshoe Curt Spalding over Bill Hahn to complete the 20 car A-main field.

When the green was displayed for the A-main, it was Van Wormer jumping to the point ahead of Johnson, Bloomquist, O'Neal, Babb, Dauber, Schlieper and Moyer.

Caution was displayed on Lap 6 when Moyer came to a stop on the backstrecth. After a quick pit stop for a different rubber compound on several corners Moyer was back onto the track for the resumption of the event.

With green back on the field Jeep was the class of the field pulling to the point and seperating himself from the competition.

O"neal worked past Babb on lap 7 while Moyer was working the back half of the field, advancing several positions.

Bloomquist disposed of Johnson on lap 8 moving his black sunshine mobile into the runner up position.

On lap 11 Schlieper worked past Dauber to overtake 6th.

Lap 14 would see Moyer having advanced several more positions at the back half of the field.

Lap 17 was the second caution of the event when Casebolt stralled on the backstretch.

By lap 20 Moyer was in the 14th position while Jeep was actively leading the field at ease.

On lap 23 O'Neal moved into 3rd position, passing Johnson.

Lap 25 was the demise of Dauber as he exited the track on the backstretch.

By lap 33 Moyer had advanced to 11th while working to crack into the top 10.

On lap 35 Van Wormer lapped the #27 who wuold be the only car to finish the event 1 lap in arrears.

On lap 36 Babb passed Greg Johnson off of turn 2 while one lap later Schlieper also moved past Johnson utilizing the top side off of turns 3 and 4.

On lap 38 Moyer cracked the top 10 and would take over the position in which he would finsih the race 2 laps later.

At the stripe it was Van Wormer easily catching the checkered flag ahead of Bloomquist, O'Neal, Babb, Schlieper, Johnson, Gill, Aaron Scott, Ruhlman, Moyer, Miller, DeLong, Patterson, Hillard Miller, Toczek, and Spalding.

Tomorrow night its off to Oakshade Speedway to crown the 2k2 UMP Summer Nationals champion, whomever that may be!

See ya all in Victory Lane!

UMP Summer Nats Points after Hartford Event #24..
Scott gains stronghold!
from Smash

With only one event remaining Scott Bloomquist shored up his points lead tonight at Hartford with a strong runner up position, all but sealing a $100,000 championship barring any bad luck at Oakshade tomorrow night... there is still a possibility for either Babb who is now in second, or Moyer to pull a rabbit out of the hat, but it would require some luck on either of their behalf to unseat Bloomquist for the title.

Stay tuned!

1. Scott Bloomquist 1251 2 Wins
2. Shannon Babb 1220 7 Wins
3. Billy Moyer 1212 4 Wins
4. Don O'Neal 1172 2 Wins
5. Kevin Weaver 998 3 Wins
6. Dan Schlieper 770
7. Jeep Van Wormer 694 1 Win
8. Billy Drake 642 1 Win
9. Bob Pierce 597 2 Wins
10.Dennis Erb 442

As you can see, O'Neal is mathematically removed from the championship equation, however, 2-4th could change with tomorrow nights results quite easily, Bloomquist however has a stronghold at this point barring any bad luck.

Regardless of the outcome, a big CONGRATULATIONS is due each of the winners on the tour as well as those who towed the long distances to participate in the 2k2 edition of the UMP Summer Nationals! They are all champions in their fans eyes!

Thanks to all writers, fans, and websites for
keeping us all informed
Our fourth year of attempting to offer race fans a daily digest of UMP Summernational racing is now completed and we again enjoyed the experience.
Racenut now puts his final touch to 2002. Thanks to all who helped.

The 2002 UMP Summernationals.... a review...
by Dan Stewart (1Racenut).

Now that the 2002 version of the UMP Summernationals is complete, a review
is in order. In most peoples eyes, the annual running of the Summernationals
can be considered a huge success. First of all, 27 races at 27 different
racetracks in 10 states over 29 nights was the schedule. Luckily, rain only
shut down two of the events, Peoria and Mt. Vernon. This year's trek covered
more than 4,987 miles, from green flag to checkers.
Week one: Starting this year in Madisonville, KY., Don O'Neal took the first
win, they then went down the road to Clarksville, TN, with Kevin Weaver
taking the win. The first two nights had low car counts, but quality was
abundant. Next, the first trip north, to Danville, IL with car counts
jumping, and a full house on hand, Wendell Wallace would visit victory lane,
only after race-long leader Scott Bloomquist finally blew the motor in his
ride. Wallace would lose his trailer to a devastating fire the next night at
North Vernon, IN leaving the series, but luckily, no injuries resulted.
Billy Moyer served notice that night that he once again wanted to vie for
the championship, and the $100,000 that went along with it. Further north to
Hales Corner, WI, young Shannon Babb showed the way, and in the process
served notice that he was also in the hunt for the championship. The next
two nights, at Crown Point, IN and Brownstown, IL, Babb drove that point
home by hogging victory lane, for three wins in a row, the only run in the
series.
Week two: Calvert City KY and the Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway came next,
with Billy Moyer again taking the win. On to Tommy Helfrich's Haubstadt, IN
track saw Don O'Neal show why he is 'The Real Deal', taking the win and
keeping his name in the hat for the title. Back across the state of IL, this
time to Godfrey, IL, Shannon Babb put his yellow and red #18 back in victory
lane again. Winding north in IL, to Peoria saw this year's first rainout,
followed the next night with a trip to Kankakee and Billy Moyer again
proving why he is the winningest driver in the history of this series with
yet another trip to victory lane. Time to head south again, only to get
rained on again in Mt. Vernon, IL, before heading to Paducah, KY. Another
Illinois resident, who had so far been quiet in the series, Billy Drake came
out with the win.
Week three: The following night, the series made it's only visit to
Missouri, at I-55 Raceways in Pevely, MO, and again Shannon Babb came out
the victor. The next race was at Terre Haute's Action Track, providing the
first 'best' races of the month. Scott Bloomquist, who had led several races
previously, finally shut the fans up with his first visit to victory lane.
Then came the first of a six nights in a row Illinois trip to Charleston
Speedway. Although the races ran late, the fans who stayed for the complete
show got their money's worth, and another 'best',  with regional star Bob
Pierce taking his first checkered flag of the series. Then on to LaSalle, IL
the drivers went, with John Gill, who had not been travelling with the
series regularly, showed up to prove why he likes the place so much, with
his visit to victory lane. Next came the Spoon River Speedway, IL race, with
the black #0 of Scott Bloomquist holding off a very determined Shannon Babb
for the win. The series then moved on to the Mighty Macon Speedway, with the
only 100 lap race, and a slightly rougher track than normal payed off for
the veteran Kevin Weaver for his second win in the series, and his third win
in this particular race. Farmer City Raceway hosted the travelling circus
the following night, with Shannon Babb finally getting to show off in front
of his home town fans with a wildly popular win over Scott Bloomquist, in
another of the 'best' races of the series.
Week four: The travelling circus known as the UMP Summernationals then went
to Fairbury, IL, which was won by former track champion Kevin Weaver.
Finally, a night off to travel to Shawano WI, for a night which saw Winston
Cup Star Kenny Schrader try his hand, only to watch from the back of the
field as Billy Moyer once again entered victory lane. Into Iowa for the
first time, at West Union, IA, the three year old race track saw a lack of
race cars again, but Bob Pierce powered out ahead for another win. North to
Owatonna, MN saw a one day rain delay and the biggest winner's purse of the
series go to Shannon Babb. Then it was east to Hartford MI, with the fans
getting to see young Jeep VanWormer get his first feature win. The finale of
the Summernationals the past few years has been at Oakshade Raceway in
Wauseon, OH. With Scott Bloomquist in the points lead, Billy Moyer second
and Shannon Babb third, the championship would be decided between the three
professional race car drivers. Moyer would win, with Bloomquist second, good
enough to win the championship.

The Good:
*$100,000 to the points winner, to be collected at the UMP banquet next
spring.
*The points race was updated daily throughout the series, and normally
posted on the internet. This was a first, as in the past, sometimes the fans
had no idea who was even leading the series. Or frequently who won the last
few races.
*Again, the points, this was also the first time it was made public how the
points are accumulated for this series.
*The influx of a few more of the sports biggest names.
*The emergence of Shannon Babb, as one of those big names, proving finally
why his fans were so crazy about him in 1995-1996, and then dismayed when he
didn't beat all the big names immediately. Clearly, Shannon Babb has
arrived.
*The great races, most notably at Terre Haute, KLMS, Charleston and Farmer
City. Noted by a lot of people as the best of the series.
*The huge crowds, even at tracks that are not UMP weekly tracks, the fans
came out to see the stars.
*The results were posted on the internet nightly, some boards even doing a
race-by-race update when possible, sometimes by cell phone, sometimes by
laptop computer in the scoring tower.
*Lack of rain....only two rainouts.
*The comaraderie of the top combatants. Moyer having car trouble late in the
series, pulling out backup car and the Bloomquist crew helping them get it
on the track in time to compete. Steve Norris (Moyer) spraying Danny Meyers
(Bloomquist) with the water after the series was over.
*The pre-series publicity over the superstars, who was/was not going to
follow the series.
*The ability of some promoters to overcome the hot, dry weather to put on
great shows anyway.
*The tail-gate atmosphere at most of the shows.
*The sports young guns. Some made almost every show they entered.

The Bad:
*The rivalry between the fans of the sports top superstars. Not indicative
of the rivalry between the stars themselves.
*The heat. Through the middle part of the series, as normal, Mother Nature
shined her sun down pretty hard.
*The quirkiness of the way that rainouts are handed out during this series.
It seems to change every year or two. One year the Summernationals did not
end until mid-August.
*The pricing for the fans, and drivers. At one track, front gate was $20 for
$5,000 to win, at another it was $10 for $10,000 to win. Each track has it's
own expenses, so each is accountable for only itself. Although, sometimes in
life, you get what you pay for, including racy tracks, a decent sound system
and a show that is run in a timely manner. Sometimes the extra money is
worth it.
*The usual pre-series schedule changes. Makes it hard to plan in advance,
but the schedule changes are normal for this series. In the past there were
schedule changes during the series.

The Ugly:
*The heat. Again, the heat made for the dustiest of conditions. At some
tracks.
*Rain, but only at two tracks. Unfortunately, the fans of those two tracks
paid to see the top names in the sport. The raindates were set for AFTER the
series were over. And, the top names will not return to those tracks. Those
fans are obviously angry, and with good reason.
*The payback for the last half of the field. Again, this is normal for those
following this series through the years. Sad, but finishing lower than tenth
in the feature, sometimes in fields of 40-50 cars, does not even pay the gas
bill to the next track.
*The fans renaming one track "Freightbury" in reference to the lack of
passing for the second of the last three years.
These were the same fans bragging about the end of the year race last fall
that was among the best races of all time.
*The arrogance of some of the sports biggest multi-team sponsors.
*The bad-mouthing by the internet so-called race fans. Drivers being put
down on a minute-by minute basis. VERY ugly.

The Sad:
*Bob Pierce. Bob did not follow the complete series, but won two races, and
was in the top ten in the points late in the series. Sad, because Bob's
mother was sick, he skipped the last part of the series. She passed away the
last day of the series.
*The financial end of running this series. Three time winner on the series,
and former series champion, Kevin Weaver dropped off late, due to expenses.
*UMP has always been bragged up to be the series for the 'working man'. The
top drivers in this series, not 'working men', but all professional drivers.
*Wendell Wallace. The aforementioned trailer fire, but at least no one was
injured.
