Babb Victorious at Fairbury
Jeffrey A. Bayless
(July 26, Fairbury, IL) A warm day turned into a comfortable evening for watching some of the finest Late Model drivers in the area compete for the $10,000 winners share of the make-up date of the rained out Summer National show at the Fairbury American Legion Speedway in Fairbury, IL. 33 Late Models were on hand as well as 42 Modifieds to compete in their regular program.
Randy Korte led the field around to the green flag of this 50-lap event and sped away to the early lead ahead of Mike Mullvain, Shannon Baab, Don O’Neal, and Roger Long. Baab wasted no time moving forward as he shot by Mullvain on the second lap coming out of four, but Mullvain’s troubles were just beginning. He got out of shape in the first set of turns on the next lap collecting up Jr. Shickel in the process, however both drivers gathered themselves up and continued on without a caution, albeit several positions back from their previous spot. Five laps in the filed had begun to settle out with Korte on the point with Baab in tow a couple of car lengths ahead of O’Neal. As these three competitors separated from the field Long and a hard charging Bob Pierce were battling it out for the 4th spot with Mullvain and Dennis Erb within striking distance if they made a mistake. The first caution came on the 9th lap when Kerry Hansen spun in turn 2. Under this caution Bob Pierce surrendered his 4th spot to make a tire change and a few laps later retired his ride for the night. There were a couple more quick cautions, one for debris on lap 12 and another on lap 14 when Joe Harlan and Darren Miller got together in turn 2. The last 36 laps went by caution free and at the half way point it was Korte still leading the way slightly ahead of Baab and O, Neal who were battling for second who were a straight away ahead Mullvain, Erb, and Long who were battling for fourth. As the leaders began to reel in the back markers around the 30-lap mark, Erb and Mullvain quickly reeled in the leaders and made it a five-car battle for the top spot as Long and Billy Drake battled for 6th. Once free of Long, Drake reeled in the leaders as well to make it a 6 car lead pack as they dealt with traffic. On the 37th lap Baab was able use the slow car of Jay Spark to pin Korte low and shoot around him to the outside taking the lead. Several laps later O’Neal was able to use traffic to his advantage as well grabbing the second spot. But he was never able to reel in Baab as he sped away to victory. Korte held on to third ahead of Erb, Mullvain, Drake, Long, Kevin Weaver, Brian Shirley, and Gary May.
In UMP Modified action Brandon Kessinger grabbed the early lead but lost it on lap three when RJ Gall made a gutsy three wide move to grab the lead. Rick Thomas was making a move on Kessinger for the lead when Gall saw an opening and went for it down the backstretch and came out of turn 4 the leader. Once up front Gall never looked back as he went on to win the 20-lap event ahead of Thomas, Gary Cook Jr., Matt Bachman, and Aaron Elgin.
