TUCKWELL WINS “HAMILTON MEMORIAL” by Jeff Adams
(Peoria, IL) Billy Tuckwell of Metamora, IL held off teammate Ray Guss, Jr. for
his second consecutive “Illinois State Championship/Jon Hamilton Memorial” at
Peoria Speedway Sunday afternoon.
The race was moved to Sunday after rains pounded the Farmington Road oval
Saturday night as the Street Stock feature was lining up on the track.
Tuckwell started on the pole after winning the “Gift of Hope” dash Saturday
night, and won the race on the first lap when he drag-raced fellow front-row
starter Tim Lance into the first corner. Tuckwell survived 14 caution flags, and
a late-race charge by Guss, Jr., for the $4,000 payday.
“This win is huge for us because we’ve been struggling all year long”, said
Tuckwell in victory lane. “Ray (Neltner, Jr.) had the car perfect, and all I had
to do was protect the bottom. We saved the best for last.”
Guss, Jr. actually passed Tuckwell in turn 4 on lap 88 after John Provenzano
spun and re-started, causing Shane Allen to spin. The pass was negated when the
yellow flag flew. “It was hard to pass, and you had to hug the bottom”, said
Guss. “We’ll take it though, after starting 13th”.
Jeremiah Hurst finished 3rd, with Gary Webb and Doug Nigh rounding out the top 5
Milo Veloz, Jr. won the Modified feature, with Matt Dillon capturing the
Sportsman feature. Steve Brandt, Jr. won the Street Stock feature, with Doug
Sauder winning in the Hornet division.
The race concludes the 2003 racing season at Peoria Speedway.
