The Crazy Fans

It is a time of year that people plan for all year. Racers, crews, and fans work for months just to get ready to go. Summer National marathon, 26 races in 27 days. Except this year it was more like, 27 days, 3 ½ rainouts, one rain date, and a bunch of traveling. Four drivers completed the task, Billy Moyer, Billy Drake, Terry English, and Shannon Babb (who was at the last race but didn’t run). Some drivers ran a lot of races, some just the ones close to home.  But all tried to leave a mark on the list of winners. This year Don O’Neal won 8 races after missing the first 3 because of blood clots in his legs. (Glad he is better). Scott Bloomquist last year’s champ only ran 4 races but won all of them. There were 11 different winners. One that sticks out, Billy Faust winning at Calvert City, Kentucky, an underdog beat a stacked field. Then not a big surprise but Brian Birkhofer won Eldora.

But each race had 2 things in common, the best drivers and the best fans. No other sport would drive all nite to work all day to race part of the nite just to drive some more. And the fans would follow, to just watch more racing.  The drivers and crews get rewarded for their efforts with money and pride. But the fans, they spend a lot of their own money to get stories to tell others. The fans who go to all the races are a special group or a bunch of crazies (verdict is still out). It’s amazing how many people go to all 26 races. All the work they have to do. From packing to securing their home to planning where to go and getting everything running and working, it must take months. It seems like lots of work just for races but that’s why the fans are so important.

I bet all the drivers, crews, and fans are still sleeping since getting home from Oakshade.
Congrats to Billy Moyer and Team on the 2003 championship
Also
Congrats to Don O’Neal and Team on winning 8 races

We at Midwestdirttrackfacts.com send our condolences to the family and friends of Corey Haney. And to the driver involved. God Bless.

Mother Nature Wins LaSalle Summer Nats...Complete Results
By Smash

Mother Nature won the finale of the night topping the 58 cars on hand and she never even took a qualifying lap!

Shannon Babb of Mowequa, IL. topped the 58 cars on hand in qualifying with a lap around the LaSalle Speedway at 12.68 seconds.

The dash was won by Darrel Lanigan who has been rocket fast since his win in the ELDORA DREAM. Following Lanigan to set the first three rows of the A-Main were Frank Heckenast, Jim Partipillo, Shannon Babb, Terry English and Jeep Van Wormer. Wendell Wallace, Billy Moyer and Lil' John Provenzano rounded out the field and would start the pole of the first three heat races.

The first heat was won by Wallace going away over Russ Sheffler and Jay Fiene. Rounding the field were Steve Hillard, T.J. Markham, Brian McCabe, Robert Pohlman, Rob Toland and Billy Weistart.

The second heat was captured by Duke Whiseant over Billy Drake and Shawn Toczek. The remainder, who would find themselves consi bound were Kevin Weaver, Tim Routson, Billy Moyer, Tony Izzo, Jr., Mike Glynn, Jim Letriax, #8??, MikeFannin and Mike Kingma.

The third heat was won by The Tall Cool One, Bob Pierce over a fast challenger Skip Martin and Darren Miller. The remainder of the field was Provenzano, Steve Casebolt, Eddie Schickel, Tom Markham, Jason Feger, Bill Trueblood, Sherri Heckenast and Chris Carlson.

The fourth heat had just pulled onto the track when the rains set in calling an abrupt end to the nights activities.

Tomorrow night will see the 2003 UMP Summer Nationals Road Tour move onto the Crown Point, Indiana Speedway. For race information or questions the track can be reached by calling 219-662-4007.

The evenings finale will be a 40 lap $6,000 to win event.

See ya in Victory Lane!

Thursday, June 26 - Crown Point Motor Speedway - Crown Point, In - $6,000 to win - track 219-662-4007....40 laps
 -Winner- Shannon Babb- 27 entries

Crown Point 2003 Summernational June 26, 2003
Shannon Babb, the Mowequa Missile took home the $6,000.00 winners share
tonight driving his Billy Moyer Racing #18 WATTERS, J&J Steel, Platinum Motors, CAR
CITY, Hoosier by Smash, WICK Racing Products, SUNOCO Fuels, JAY DICKENS
powered Mastersbilt chasis during stop #4 of the 2003 UMP Cross Country Tour at the
CROWN POINT Speedway.

Babb started the evening by recording a new track record in qualifying
turning in a time of 12. 756, topping the other 27 cars on hand.

The dash was a walk away by the Babbster as he took the checkers a
straightaway ahead of runner up Rick Aukland and the remainder of the field, Jim
Partipillo, Wendell Wallace, Terry English, Jeep Van Wormer, Billy Moyer and Ted
Loomis.

The first heat was Billy Moyer, babb bossman taking the point followed by
Kevin Weaver, Russ Sheffler, John Provenzano, Turk Latizia, Jason Beier, Mike
Metz, Bary Carlson, Guy Volk and Shawn Toczek.

The second heat was won by Ted Loomis over Steve Casebolt, Duke Whiseant, Bob
Pierce, Wes Steidinger, Garrett Durrett, Jim Loomis, Kerry Matthew, Johnathon
Bateman, Dennis Erb and Eddie Leviner.

The third and final heat was topped by Billy Drake over Ed Dixon, Steve
Hillard,m Bret Sievert, Dick Potts, Jim Letizia, Mike Kingma, Brian McCabe and Zach
Hansen.

The consi which would add the final two transfer positions was topped by Wes
Steidinger in commanding fashion over local standout Eddie Leviner who started
the event deep in the pack!

There was a great deal of confusion in the original finish posted by the
track as they had Moyer finishing ahead of Drake, Weaver in 13th position when he
actually finished 6th, Jeep Van Womer was originally posted as 7th and he
actually finished 8th, Provenzano was listed as 11th but actually finished 14th
and to totally confuse things they had Barry Carlson down in the feature when he
didnt even run the feature. After what was at time heated discussion, most of
the problems were corrected with the exception of Van Wormer and Provenzano
who had already been paid but had left the premises.

The actual official finish was as follows:

1. Babb, 2. English, 3. Wallace 4. Drake, 5. Moyer, 6. Weaver, 7. Dixon, 8.
Van Wormer, 9. Aukland, 10. Casebolt, 11. Steidinger, 12. Loomis, 13. Leviner,
14. Provenzano, 15. Sheffler, 16. Kingma, 17. Pierce, 18. Portipillo, 19.
Sievert, 20. Hillard, 21. Whiseant

Shannon Babb wins UMP Summer National Stop #5 at Kankakee!

Shannon Babb of Mowequa, IL. made a comeback from behind tonight and earned
the $10,000 winners share for his efforts, after falling behind in the early
stages of the race. Starting from the outside pole position, Babb fell as far
back as sixth in the opening laps. However; displaying a never give up attitude,
Babb who was 3rd at lap 15 took to the low side and pulled ahead of Darrel
Lanigan on the 28th lap and never looked back.

This was Babbs second consecutive win after also visiting victory lane the
previous night at Crown Point Speedway. By virtue of his win this evening, Babb
moved into the 4th all time Summer National win position recording his 14th
UMP Summer National victory. This now ranks him behind only Billy Moyer with 57
wins, Scott Bloomquist with 24 wins and Rick Aukland with 23 wins.

Babb was piloting the Moyer Racing, Jay Dickens powered, PRC Pro Rod and
Custom, Red Line Oil, J&J Steel, Watters, Car City, Arkansas Motors, Hoosier by
Smash, WICK Racing Products, Sunoco Fuels, Custom Craft, Platinum Motors
sponsored #18 Mastersbilt Chassis.

Kevin Weaver started the night by recording the fastest qualifying lap with a
time of 14.492.

The trophy dash was won by Wendell Wallace over Babb, Darrel Lanigan, Weaver,
Dennis Erb, Billy Moyer, Robert Pohlman, Terry English and Tony Izzo, Jr.

The first heat was won by Brett Sievert over Roger Long, English, Dave
Eckrich, Joe Harlan, Bob Pierce, Steve Casebolt, R.J. Gall, Brandon Slager and Larry
Legrand.

The second heat was topped by Jeep Van Wormer over Duke Whiseant, Robert
Pohlman, Darren Miller, Richie Hedrick, Ted Loomis, Johnny Johnson, Frank
Heckenast, Russ Sheffler, Sherri Heckenast and Wes Steidinger.

Third heat honors went to Randy Korte over Rick Aukland, Shawn Toczek,

The fourth and final heat was won by Billy Drake over Don O'Neal, John
Provenzano, Pete Parker, Gary May, Greg Johnson, Ryan Dauber, Frank Reaber, Steve
Hillard and Brent Slocum.

There were two consis's with 4 from each that were added to the main event.
The first consi would transfer Joe Harlan, Eckrich, Slager and Pierce while
the second consi added Parker, Miller, Johnson and Hedrick.

The feature finish seen Babb followed to the checkers by Lanigan, Moyer,
Wallace, Weaver, O'Neal,  Drake, Aukland, Miller, Whiseant, Parker, Van Wormer,
Harlan, Korte, Toczek, Pierce, Hedrick, English, Johnson, Slager, Erb and
Eckrich, Long, Sievert and Pohlman who were DNF's.

Tri State UMP Summernationals Results and Notes...

BILLY DRAKE parked his MasterSbilt on the hub and cabbaged on the Real Deal’s misfortune to pick up his first Summernationals win of 2003.

FINISH:

1 Billy Drake
2 Rick Aukland
3 Bob Pierce
4 Billy Moyer
5 Shannon Babb
6 Rodney Melvin
7 Randy Korte
8 Kevin Weaver
9 Kevin Claycomb
10 Dennis Erb, Jr.

RICK AUKLAND took the lead at the start of the main event from dash winner DON O’NEAL while BILLY MOYER wrestled third away from BOB PIERCE bringing SHANNON BABB along before the caution flew for BILLY FAUST who climbed up on WENDELL WALLACE’s car collecting BOBBY MELVIN and STEVE CASEBOLT, JR.

On the restart, Aukland held off O’Neal who took a look off four. High riding Babb slipped off tow allowing Pierce back under and onto Moyer’s deck lid. Moyer meanwhile joined Aukland and O’Neal to challenge for the lead as Donnie O began to turn up the wick on Aukland. Aukland in turn drove his Rayburn deeper into the corners on the rim as the Real Deal went to the hub. As the duo raced into traffic, O’Neal worked under Aukland in three but the momentum carried by the artist formerly known as the Fargo Flash put him back up front at the stripe. The two swapped the lead this way for the next few laps before O’Neal dealt an ugly slider that cleared Aukland but a near stop off the corner forced Aukland to check up allowing O’Neal to scoot away. Behind them, Drake began to slowly begin his march forward working on Babb for fifth.

Back up front O’Neal fended off Aukland’s challenge taking the leaders into lapped traffic. Back at fifth, Babb used the lapped traffic as a pick to get back around Drake. With O’Neal a half straightaway ahead of the field, Aukland’s hands were full with Moyer. Babb, who’d shaken Drake for the time being, chased down Pierce for fourth but the Bloomington, Illinois chauffeur hung around on the hub while his fellow Illini entered lapped traffic.

With the Real Deal on the rim and driving to a straightaway lead, Drake joined Pierce and Babb rolling under both cars off two on the hub. A lap later, Drake reeled in Moyer and challenged for third as the field took the crossed sticks. The Drake/Moyer duo swapped the third spot for the next two laps before Drake again pulled ahead off the bottom of two. By this time, Aukland had been caught and with the help of Steve Casebolt as a pick, second was Drake’s off two. A lap later, Moyer went to work on Aukland again before Casebolt brought out the next caution stopping in two.

When the field went green again, Drake poked a nose under O’Neal while Moyer and Aukland raced side by side for third. Pierce followed Drake’s low line and rolled under Babb for fifth. As O’Neal again inched ahead by a half straightaway the caution flew once more denying Pierce’s pass of Moyer.

On the restart, Moyer dove under Aukland to challenge for third before Aukland sailed past on the rim. Drake then went to work on O’Neal looking low off turn four. O’Neal’s deep run into one sent him high off two allowing Drake to sneak under and take the lead down the back chute. O’Neal then rallied to pull alongside through three and four and wind his Pro Power tight down the front side and very deep into one on the rim alongside the leader. The Real Deal’s challenge and bid for his first win since last week’s illness ended in turn two when a flat right rear ended his night as he slowed and stopped in three to bring out the final caution and send track workers all down the back stretch picking up the remains of his right rear.

With only six trips left to go, Drake pulled away from the field despite a broken left front strut tube. Pierce inched his way under Aukland for second as Aukland once again used his momentum off the corners to retake second. In the final mile of racing Drake pulled out to a half straightaway lead while Pierce and Aukland swapped second off four and down the front chute. As Billy Drake picked up his first special event win of 2003, Aukland nipped Pierce by inches at the line as a result of Pierce’s gentlemanly allowance of room off four that gave Aukland enough room to slip by at the stripe. Moyer rode home fourth keeping Babb behind the boss’s kid for the first time in three races.

All in all a great night of racing. And despite getting snubbed at the gate and denied entry on a press credential the action on the track was very good. I only hope now that Tom Helfrich can afford to have that operation now.

Proximity is key as Monday’s action only takes us a few miles down the road Monday night as the PAL-U crew rolls into the Terre Haute Action Track for more Summernationals action. Until then, we’ll be wondering of Jason Sapp can get the Rockethead a date with Dora the Explorer and rollin’ em around!

Monday, June 30 - Terre Haute Action Track - Terre Haute, In - $6,000 to win - track 812-234-6868 ....40 laps-  - Winner - Don O'Neal

Terre Haute UMP Summernationals Results and Notes... June 30, 2003

DON O’NEAL fresh off the road to recovery unloaded his reliable “Hooptie” and rolled to his first Summernationals win of the 2003 tour.

FINISH:
1 Don O’Neal
2 Billy Moyer
3 Steve Francis
4 Scott James
5 Bob Pierce
6 Wendell Wallace
7 Kevin Weaver
8 Dennis Erb, Jr.
9 Billy Drake
10 Shawn Toczek

BILLY MOYER pulled to the early lead at the start of the main event ahead of O’Neal. SHANNON BABB and KEVIN WEAVER raced for second off two with the Flatland Flash inching ahead down the back chute. O’Neal went to work on Moyer in three on the hub and nipped Moyer at the line. When the pair raced off into one, O’Neal dove in deep slipping high in front of Moyer taking the lead for good.

With O’Neal out front and pulling away, Babb went to work on Moyer for second. The Babbster pulled alongside Moyer down the backside before Moyer retook the spot in three. The duo raced together off four and down the front chute before Babb took second from the boss’s kid in one. Moyer hung tough behind Babb as STEVE FRANCIS worked his way from seventh to challenge Moyer and Babb.

As O’Neal now enjoyed a half-straightaway lead that was growing, Beevo parked the Moring Motorsports Rocket on the hub to take third from Moyer off two. Behind them, WENDELL WALLACE ran down Weaver. Further back, SCOTT JAMES and DENNIS ERB raced with a low riding PETE PARKER for ninth.

While O’Neal took the crossed flags racing into traffic, second running Babb slowed handing second to Francis and increasing the Real Deal’s lead to a full straightaway. Meanwhile James began to ride the cushion as the Silver Shark rode the high road up to seventh chasing down Drake. A pass of Drake on the rim carried James to the rear of Weaver. The Shark circled Weaver in three and four as the caution flew of a slowed DUKE WISEANT.

On the restart, the Shark ran down Wallace and BOB PIERCE who’d quietly ran in the top five the whole race. Once again James stepped to the rim and rode the Action Track’s historic cushion off two to roll to fourth as TERRY ENGLISH got into the wall in one and two bringing out the final caution with a mile of racing left.

In the final two laps, O’Neal pulled out to a half straightaway lead again. Moyer and Francis picked up the fight for second as the Shark made it a trio for the runner up spot. James’ bid for third alongside Moyer was null and void when Moyer poked a nose under Francis in three. On the last lap O’Neal ran all alone in the lead as the Francis, Moyer, James trio continued to slug it out in one where Moyer’s dive to the bottom forced Francis off the hub. James was then forced to lift allowing the Tall Cool One to pull under him. Moyer continued to dog Francis in three while Pierce rode the hub beside the Shark who sailed along the steel.

While O’Neal cruised to the win under the spinning light signals of Tony Thomas, Moyer edged Francis at the line for second. James was able to use the launch off the rim to pull ahead of Pierce for third.

OTHER ODDS AND ENDS…

-TERRY ENGLISH and BILLY DRAKE came back from a crash in the dash to make the show.

-JEEP VAN WORMER’s missed the show getting into the turn two wall as well.

-RICK AUKLAND pulled out of the feature after slowing on the initial start losing an engine.

And after three races in four days, the first time visit to the Action Track got a definite return visit from the PAL-U crew, as the turn one view is worth the entire trip. A cross-state ride back to on of the PAL-U favorites is on tap for Tuesday night when we head east to Florence. With the names mentioned to be in attendance and hopefully a surface to rival the Ralph Latham Memorial a few weeks ago, this one could very well be one of the best races of the Summernationals tour. Until then, we’ll be wishing Houston O’Neal a happy eighth birthday, and rollin’ em around!

Mt. Vernon, IL (July 7, 2003) Wendell Wallace only lead the feature for about 500 feet during the UMP Summer Nationals event at Mt. Vernon Raceway, but it was the final 500 feet to the checkered flag. Wallace started on the inside of the second row in the 40 lap main event. Pole sitter Don O'Neal jumped out front and led the first 39 3/4 laps with Wallace right on his bumper for the final 35 laps. The track had taken rubber and the fast line was right on the bottom, so just about every car in the feature was running around the bottom. At the end, the two leaders were stacked up behind heavy lapped traffic and were unable to move past. Going into the turn three on the final lap, O'Neal left a small opening and Wallace drove in deep under O'Neal with the two cars bumping, Wallace accelerated off the bottom and beat O'Neal back to the line to pick up the win.

Billy Drake continued his consistency during the Summer Nationals with a third place finish. Shannon Babb moved up from his eighth place starting position to finish fourth. Randy Korte rounded out the top five.

The fireworks came after the race in the pit area as the teams of O'Neal and Wallace had some heated discussions over the last lap pass.

Thursday, July 10 - Macon Speedway - Macon, Il - now$7,000 to win -$1,000 to win dash- track 217-764-3770....100 laps-.......Winner-Terry English

July 10, 2003

The annual 100 lap race at Macon has a new sponsor, now called the 95Q Behind Pit Wall 100, but some things are still the same. In years past this race was billed as the locals against the travelers. For only the third time since the beginning in 1981, an out of state driver won, with Terry English showing the way. Bob Pierce turned in fast time at 10.600, less than one tenth of a second off the track record, of the 40 late models on hand. English beat Joe Ross Jr in the dash to set up the front row for the feature. Heats went to Billy Moyer, Kevin Weaver, Shannon Babb and Kyle Logue. Semi features went to Justin Allgaier and Garret Durrett. Ross started out with the lead, only to have Don O'Neal pass him on lap 3, then O'neal would pull in 4 laps later. During a rash of yellow flag fever, the field got strung out. As the laps wore down, several other challengers would fall by the wayside, including Moyer, Babb, Van Wormer, Ed Bauman.

UMP Summernationals

With a whopping 50 late models from 10 states on hand, Don O'Neal proved once again why he has garnered the nickname "The Real Deal." Local and national standout Shannon Babb turned in fast time for the evening at 13.122 seconds. The dash went to Babb over Jeep VanWormer, Steve Sheppard Jr, Roger Long, Billy Moyer, Terry English, Billy Drake, Justin Allgaier and Jr Shickel. The previous night's winner Terry English coughed an engine in time trials, and switched to his back up car for the evening. The top three from each heat advanced to the feature, with the first heat going to Joe Ross, Jr over Billy Drake, Randy Korte Steve Hillard and Gary May. Second heat went to Don O'Neal over Wendell Wallace, Mike Mullvain, Justin Allgaier and Bob Pierce. Third heat went to Darren Miller over Kevin Weaver, Jr Shickel, Eric Kwasigroh and Corey Turner. The fourth and final heat went to Joe Harlan over Eric Smith, Dennis Erb Jr, Chris Dick and Don Hammer.

The semi-features looked like a who's who of the midwest racing scene, filled with track champions from everywhere. Steve Hillard bested Bob Pierce, Todd Bennett, Gary May and Justin Allgaier in the first semi. The second semi went to Eric Kwasigroh over Richie Hedrick, Don Hammer and Chris Dick.

Twenty Two late models started the feature with Shannon Babb and Jeep VanWormer on the front row. After a first lap caution, the remaining 49 laps were run under the green flag, with O'Neal going to the low side to take the lead from Babb on lap 16, and sailing to a comfortable half-lap lead at the checkers. Billy Drake came in second after a late battle with third place finisher Babb and Billy Moyer. Roger Long, Terry English, Wendell Wallace and Kevin Weaver rounded out the lead lap finishers.

The Real Deal Victorious at Kamp Motor Speedway
Jeffrey A. Bayless

(July 18 Boswell, IN)  As the UMP Summer National Series wound down the big boys of UMP Late Model racing rolled into Kamp Motor Speedway to compete for the $10,000 to win prize in the next to last date on the series.  Very heavy rains that had rolled through the area the night before had dumped nearly 3 inches of unneeded rain on the racetrack and made for an interesting night with less than ideal racing conditions.  It should be noted however that the track workers made a gallant effort in trying to get the track into racing shape and worked through the night at every opportunity to try and stay ahead of the deteriorating track conditions.

26 Late Models were on hand to take a shot at the big payday and the night began with a qualifying session.  The Tall Cool One, Bob Pierce, set fast time with a lap of 13.270, however his night was shortened when he broke for the night during the dash.  The first six starting positions are determined by the nine-lap dash of the fastest 6 qualifiers and 3 provisionals.  Eddie Leviner jumped to the early lead but Don O’Neal floated by on the high side with a handful of laps remaining to claim the dash win.  Jeep Van Wormer was flying on the high side to win heat one ahead of local point leader Michael Bradley.  Shannon Baab won heat two going away with Jamie Wilson finishing a solid second.  Heat three went to Billy Drake over Mike Kingma.   The last two spots of the feature were filled from the conci with Kevin Claycomb beating C.J. Rayburn to the stripe.

Then it was time for the main event with fireworks lighting the sky as 20 of the best cars and drivers rolled around to take the green flag.  Don O’Neal jumped to the early lead with Eddie Leviner, Bob Pohlman, Billy Moyer, and Terry English in hot pursuit.  Moyer made a quick move towards the front moving into the second spot on the second lap as Pohlman began falling backward just a s quickly.  The action slowed on the 4th lap when Kevin Weaver’s ride slowed through three and four, as he became the race’s first casualty.   Shannon Baab looked fast on the restart and was working his way solidly into the top five after the restart when he became the reason for the second yellow when his left rear wheel broke free from the machine.  Upon the restart English and Long began a battle that would last several laps with each driver making several passes of the other before English settled into third spot as Jeep Van Wormer engaged Long for fourth after a caution for debris on the track at lap 14.   At the half way point is was O’Neal by 15 car lengths over Moyer who was solidly in second as English lagged several car lengths back of Moyer yet several in front of the battling duo of Van Wormer and Long.   As the race neared the ten to go mark English reeled in Moyer in traffic and was able to dart under him on the 31st lap when Moyer bobbled in turn one.   After another caution to clear sheet metal from the track on the 33rd lap English was able to stay with O’Neal and looked to be preparing to mount a challenge when yet another caution flew when both Leviner and Long blew tires with two laps to go leaving more debris on the racing surface.  O’Neal got a solid restart to hold off any advances anyone had in mind and raced home to a flag to flag victory with English taking second, Van Wormer third, Billy Drake 4th, and Moyer who blew a tire in the last set of turns 5th
