"CRAMER AND GILL VICTORIOUS AT BROWNSTOWN; LONDEREE AND BARBER CROWNED TRACK CHAMPS"

By: Chris Nunn

Jesse Cramer of Bloomington, IN finally broke through at the Brownstown Speedway, and took home the $1,200 to win season finale. The other big winner was Brent Londeree, who took home the coveted Brownstown Speedway points championship.

The 30 lap feature saw Cramer take the lead on the first lap from his fourth starting position. He would lead lap number one, with a three wide battle for the third spot between Matt Boknecht, Brady Short, and Rick Hines behind him. Boknecht would take the third spot, with Short fourth, and Hines fifth. Lap number five would see the first caution fly, as Broc Burton would spin in turn four. On the restart, another three wide battle would take place, this time for fifth. Adam Sasser, Earl Plessinger, and Rick Hines would do the honors in this battle, with Plessinger taking the spot. At the same time, Londeree would go door to door with Boknecht for the runner up spot. Boknecht would take the spot, relegating Londeree to third. Short would then get around Londeree for the third spot just before the caution would fly for Brandon Reed on lap eight. On the restart, Cramer would lead the field to the cone, with a battle for fourth taking place between Londeree and Plessinger. Londeree would hold the spot, keeping Plessinger in fifth. Just a couple of laps later on lap 12, the caution would fly again for Burton in turn two. When the green flag flew on the restart, Plessinger would get by Londeree for the fourth position. Londeree would then lose the fifth spot to Shelby Miles just a lap later. Things would start to heat up at the front of the field, as a three wide battle for the lead would shape up between Short, Boknecht, and Cramer. The battle would end however, as the caution would fly for Reed once again on lap 16. When the green flew on the lap 16 restart, Cramer would start to pull away from the second place car of Boknecht. Cramer continued to stretch his lead until the caution would fly again on lap 22 for Bubba Woods in turn three. When the green flag flew again, Cramer would start to pull away on the bottom shelf. Behind him, Short would get around Boknecht for the second position. Boknecht would then lose the second spot to Plessinger. As Cramer would stick to the bottom groove, Short tried desperately to re

el him in, powering off the corners down the straights. Plessinger would ultimately catch Short, making a great move in turn one to take second with just a couple of laps to go. Short would get back around Plessinger just in time to watch Cramer take his first ever win at the Brownstown Speedway. Following Cramer at the checkers were Short, Plessinger, Boknecht, and J.D. Roberts. The winning sponsors on the #12 of Cramer are: Amsoil High Tech Lubricants, Colortyme, Bells Exhaust, Monroe County Pizza, and JB Masonry. The car is a Lightning Chassis owned by Tina Cramer

John Gill of Mitchell, IN led every lap of the 25 lap main event at the Brownstown Speedway to put an end to the 2004 racing season at the 1/4 mile speedplant. Mark Barber of North Vernon, IN took home his second Late Model track championship by virtue of his fifth place finish. Barber also won the Late Model championship back in 2001.

Gill would lead the field to the green flag, with Frankie Coomer blasting past Barber for the second position coming down to complete lap one. Dan Sturgeon would then get around Barber for the second spot as the field completed lap four. Barber would then fall back one more position as Mike Jewell would battle with him for a few laps before taking the fourth spot on lap eight. At the 10 lap mark the top five was Gill, Coomer, Sturgeon, Jewell, and Barber. At this point, Gill would start to head into lap traffic, and would lose a bit of his lead over Coomer. Coomer would have more than the lap traffic to worry about, as Sturgeon would move in under him for second. Sturgeon and Coomer would battle door to door for numerous laps until Mike Bechelli would bring out the caution on lap 18. When the green flag flew on the restart, Gill would jump to a four car advantage over the field. Sturgeon would get around Coomer coming into turn one on the restart, taking the second position. Coomer would then lose the third spot to Jewell just a couple of laps later on lap 21. As the laps wound down, Sturgeon would catch Gill a little bit, but would fall back a little ways as Gill took the checkers for the third time this season at Brownstown. An adjustment was made to the final running order, as officials penalized Sturgeon two positions for jumping the final restart. The adjusted top five ran like this: Gill, Jewell, Coomer, Sturgeon, Barber. John Gill is sponsored by Harrod Farms, Central Painting, Perrys, and Jacks Lounge. The chassis is a Rocket, powered by an AMS Racing Engine

BARNETT, PETRO, AND WALTERS ALL GRACE BROWNSTOWNS VICTORY LANE
By: Chris Nunn

Steve Barnett, Randy Petro, and Bub Walters all came home victorious at the Brownstown Speedway on Saturday evening. Barnett passed race leader Dan Sturgeon on lap number nine to take home the Late Model win. Petro inherited the lead in the Super Stock Special when then race leader Mike Fields broke on lap five, and then led the rest of the way for the victory. In the Bomber division, Walters took the lead away from Ray Godsey Jr. on lap five of the main event, and would lead the remaining 20 laps for the win in the Bomber Special event.

The 25 lap Bomber main event started out with a father-son combination on the front row, as Ray Godsey Sr. and Ray Godsey Jr. would lead the field to the green flag. Ray Sr. would lead the first lap only to have Ray Jr. pull alongside for a battle for the point. As they would wage war for second, Clifton Barron and Bub Walters would go door to door for the third position. As Ray Jr. took the point from Ray Sr., Walters would  grab the third spot and set sail for the Godsey's. On lap number four, Walters, Ray Sr., and Ray Jr. would go three wide for the lead. Walters would end up with the point, with Ray Jr. in second, and Ray Sr. in third. Ray Sr. would then have to battle with Steve Godsey, as he would pull alongside for third. The yellow would fly on lap six for the spun car of Chad Plance in turn two. When the green flag would fly on the restart, Barron would get around Steve Godsey and Ray Sr. for the third spot. Steve and Ray Sr. would battle for the fourth spot, with Steve taking the position on lap seven. The second, and final yellow would fly on lap eight for Paul Owens in turn three. Walters would bring the field down to the cone for the restart, as behind him a battle for second would take place between Barron and Ray Jr. Barron would take the spot, relegating Godsey to third. While that was happening, Matt Cummings would barge into the top five with a pass on Ray Sr. on lap 11. Cummings would then reel in the fourth place car of Ray Jr., and get around him on lap 14. Cummings was not done yet, however, as he would take third away from Steve Godsey on lap 18. Up front, it looked as if Barron was catching Walters for the lead until contact with a lapped car would hinder Barron's momentum. Walters would then cruise onto victory in his Cummings Machine Shop, Cummings Racing Engines, Prince Excavating, BC Race Cars, Dee Gees Body Shop, 16th Street Marathon #71 followed by: Barron, Cummings, Steve Godsey, and Jason Combs would round out the top five

The Super Stock feature would run 30 laps as part of their special event, with Mike Fields and Brad Cummings leading the field to the green flag. Fields would bolt out to the lead, and would lead the first lap. Behind the leader, Randy Petro would ride the highside to second, getting around both Mike Cawood and Cummings. As the field completed lap three, disaster would strike Fields as he would break coming down the backstretch while leading. The yellow would fly, as Fields would stall in turn three. With Fields out of the race, Petro would inherit the point, and would take the field to the green flag. Behind him, Kevin Applegate and Cawood would battle for the second spot, with Applegate coming out with the position. The yellow would fly again on lap eight for the spun car of Mike Vest on the frontstretch. Petro would one again lead the field to the cone, with Applegate and Cawood in pursuit. Behind them, Gary Trammell and Jack Frye would battle for the fourth spot. Trammell would move to fourth with the pass on lap nine. Cawood and Applegate would then go door to door for the second spot, with Cawood taking the position on lap 14. With ten laps to go, Petro had a three quarter straightaway lead over Cawood. No one would challenge Petro, as he would take his Tyrees Trim Shop, Kathy's Home Cooking, Moonlight Vinyl Designs, DASCO #95 to the checkers followed by Cawood, Applegate, Trammell, and Jay Miller would round out the top five.

The 25 lap Late Model feature would see Dan Sturgeon and Mark Barber lead the field to the green flag. Sturgeon would lead the first lap with Barnett and Barber battling for second. Barnett would take the spot away from Barber on the second lap, and would challenge Sturgeon for the point. Barnett would keep poking his nose under Sturgeon at various points, but could not get around him. The battle would end, as the yellow would fly for Rickey Riggle in turn two. When racing resumed, Sturgeon would lead the field to the green flag, with Barnett right on his bumper. Behind them, Dion Deason would get around Barber for the third spot. On the ninth lap, Barnett would slide under Sturgeon for the point coming out of turn two. Behind them, Barber would get the third spot back from Deason on lap 15. With just five to go on lap 20, Barber would catch Sturgeon and hassle him for the runner up spot. Barber would not be able to get around Sturgeon, and would stay in third. No one would catch Barnett, however, as he would cross the finish line in his JD Byrider, Spears Auto Parts, Tony Stewart Racing #20 ahead of Sturgeon, Barber, Deason, and Doug Ault would round out the top five.

"O'Neal Holds off Cowboy For Jackson 100 Victory"
By: Chris Nunn

Don O'Neal held off a charging Cowboy en route to his second Jackson 100 victory at the Brownstown Speedway. O'Neal took over the outside pole position, when Bryan Barber elected to go to the tail by virtue of a broken rocker arm. He would then lead all 100 laps of the main event.

The 25th Annual Jackson 100 started with Jesse James Lay leading the field to the green flag, with O'Neal outdragging him to turn one. O'Neal would lead the first two laps until the caution came out for the car of Mark Teske in turn three. When racing resumed, a battle for the second position would take place between Mark Barber and Lay. The two would make slight contact, which would allow Barber to take second. Lay would get out of shape, only to lose third place to Darren Miller, and fourth place to Dick Phillips. Miller would then move up to challenge Barber for the runner up spot. Miller took the spot on lap number six. Behind them, Terry English would make his debut in the top five, with a pass on Lay on lap seven. Back up to the battle for third between Barber and Phillips. Barber would hold the position, keeping Phillips in fourth. English would then get around Phillips for the fourth position. English would then get around Barber for the third position on lap 12. Back to Phillips now, who would have to fight with Jeff Wilson for the fifth position. Wilson would take the spot away from Phillips, relegating him to sixth. Wilson would then move up and pass Barber for the fourth position. Back up front, O'Neal would begin the lapping process on lap 15, as he would put Doug Ault and Brad Barrow a lap down. On lap 17, Barber and Phillips would battle for the fifth position, with Phillips making his way back to the top five. At this point, the man on the move was Billy Drake, who had started 20th, and was already up to the eighth position by lap 20. Back to the front now, as Wilson would get sideways coming out of turn four on lap 24 allowing Phillips to fourth, and John Gill to fifth. Gill and Phillips would then wage a war for the fourth position, with Gill taking the spot away from Phillips. Phillips would then have to contend with Drake, who was on a tear towards the front. Phillips would hold Drake off until the caution would fly on lap 26 for the cars of Josh Williams and Scott James. On the restart, Drake

would get around Phillips for the fifth position, as English and Gill would battle for third. Gill would get the third position away from English, with Drake coming along to take fourth away from English. English would then lose the fifth position to Phillips. On lap 43, Phillips and Drake would make contact, sending Drake around bringing out the yellow, and ending Drakes march towards the front. The new top five were: O'Neal, Miller, Gill, Phillips, and Dan Sturgeon. When racing resumed, a battle for fifth would take place between Sturgeon and Rick Aukland. Sturgeon would hold the spot, keeping Aukland in sixth. Sturgeon wanted something better, so he passed Phillips for the fourth position. At the same time, Miller was closing on O'Neal for the lead. Back to Sturgeon now, as he would then lose the fourth spot back to Phillips. As Miller would close in  to almost pass O'Neal for the lead, he would suddenly pull into the infield with engine woes on lap 56. This would put Gill in the runner up spot, and he would begin to close on O'Neal. Another member of the top five would retire on lap 63 as Aukland would pull in with problems. Back to the battle with O'Neal and Gill, as Gill would try to poke under O'Neal for the point, only to see O'Neal pull away on the straights. The caution would fly again as a five inch long piece of white metal was lying on the track in turn one on lap 74. On the restart, O'Neal would lead the field past the cone with Gill right on his bumper. Gill would make persistant attempts at getting around O'Neal in the turns, only to see O'Neal keep pulling away on the straights. More problems in the top five would arise, as Sturgeon would pull in with problems while running fourth on lap 77. What was a two car battle for the lead, turned into a three car affair, as Phillips would join O'Neal and Gill for some fun. As Phillips started to get a run on the leaders, his oil pressure caused some major problems for him and he would pull in as well while running third. As O'Neal and Gill would get thro

ugh lapped traffic, Gill just could not find a way to get under O'Neal. With just five to go, Gill and O'Neal would be clear of all lapped traffic and would make a dash to the finish. Gill made a great effort with three to go, but just couldn't make the move. O'Neal would hold on to win the "25th Annual" Jackson 100 ahead of Gill, Steve Barnett, English, and Randy Korte. O'Neal is sponsored by A-1 Auto Salvage, Living Room Center, Blackwell Trucking, CJ Rayburn Race Cars, Allstar Performance, Jay Dickens Racing Engines, and Fast Graphix. The victory marked O'Neals second in the Jackson 100 and his 25th victory in 2004. The $1,000 Lou Ahlbrand Memorial Award went to Stanford, KY native Victor Lee for passing the most cars in the Jackson 100. He passed 11 cars during the 100 lap affair.

The 30 lap, $1,000 to win Modified feature almost saw a first time winner in Matt Huddleston, but someone else had another ideas. Heres how it all panned out. The feature would start off with a yellow as Bobby Gardner and Paul Ortman would spin in turn four. When racing resumed, Huddleston would lead the first lap with Earl Plessinger in pursuit. Back a little ways, Randle Sweeney and Jeremy Hines would battle for the fifth position. Sweeney would take the spot, moving Hines back to sixth. A battle for the second position was also taking place between Plessinger and Clint Demoss. Plessinger would hold Demoss off to keep his second position. All battles would cease however, for a caution involving Chuck Griffis on the frontstretch. On the restart, Sweeney and Matt Boknecht would battle for the fourth position, with Sweeney taking the spot. Sweeney would then get around Demoss for the third position before the caution would fly on lap 14 for debris. A series of yellows would follow, one for Bubba Woods who would slam the barrier in turn four. The other was for Griffis again on the backstretch. When racing resumed for good on lap 17, Sweeney and Demoss would run side by side for the third position. Demoss would take the spot, putting Sweeney back to fourth. Matt Bex would then make his way into the top five, as he would take fifth away from Boknecht. As the leaders took the five to go signal, Plessinger would start putting pressure on Huddleston who was running the bottom of the track. With Plessinger on the rim, it was anyones ball game at this point. As the white flag flew, Plessinger took a slight advantage on Huddleston down the back straightaway. As the duo came out of turn four, Plessinger had enough momentum to snag the victory at the line. Following Plessinger to the line was Huddleston, Denoss, Boknecht, and Sweeney would round out the top five

BROWNSTOWN, IN--Mike Jewell of Scottsburg, IN won the biggest race of his career on Saturday Night as he captured the NARA Sanctioned, Bob Poynter Ford sponsored 21st Annual Hoosier Dirt Classic at the Brownstown Speedway.  The 45 year old driver took home $7000 out of the over $30,000 late model payoff as he led all 50 laps driving the Don Powell crew chiefed, Southern Indiana Rock Drilling, Morgan Foods, MPC Motorsports, LaFountain's Auto Body, Stephens Oil Company, Shelton Angus Farms, Re/Max Hometown Professionals, Scott County Tire, Cornett Race Engines, MasterSbilt Grand Prix went victory lane in front of a packed grandstand.  Finishing right behind Jewell was John Gill of Mitchell, IN in the Brett and Cheryl Davis/Grandpa Val's Beef Jerky/Rayburn with Dennis Erb Jr of Carpentersville, IL in the Petroff Towing/Rayburn taking third.  Fourth place went to Greg Johnson of Bedford, IN in the Double D Motorsports/R&P Industrial Chimney/Rayburn and Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, IL rounded out the top five in the Car City/Jay Dickens Engines/Rayburn.  A total of 42 cars were on hand for the very first NARA race at Brownstown.

Dennis Erb Jr started on the pole for the Hoosier Dirt Classic with Mike Jewell starting alongside.  Jewell got the outside front row starting spot after original outside polesitter Steven Godsey who won the third heat race and drew the number two starting spot had to go to a backup car after dropping a valve while winning the heat.  With Erb and Jewell ready to go, official starter Noel Hargis waved the green flag to start the 50 lap event.  Jewell would quickly muscle his way to the point past Erb with R.J. Conley, Shannon Babb and John Gill trailing.  Jewell moved out to a seven car length advantage over Erb after just seven laps of racing.  By the 10th circuit Jewell had stretch his lead farther as he was trying to make this race a runaway for him.  By lap 13 Jewell had started to enter traffic with the back of the field looming just ahead of him.  That would allow Erb to close down the gap between himself and Jewell.  Conley, Gill and Babb were also reeling in the two frontrunners as they were now all on the same straightaway.  Jewell went from a 10 car length lead down to just four in a matter of a couple of laps as Jewell was having some difficulty negotiating traffic.  The only caution of the race came out on the 24th lap for Zach Carney in turn four.  With the double file restarts utilized in NARA competition Jewell would be on the point by himself with Erb and Gill restarting side by side with 26 laps remaining.

When the race resumed Gill would use the restart to his advantage passing Erb for second place.  Gill's job now was to not let Jewell get away from the field has been the case the entire race.  The frontrunners would again start to approach traffic with ten circuits to go.  At this point Gill was right on Jewell's heels as the two former Brownstown Speedway track champions would decide the outcome on who was able to handle the lapped traffic better.  With less than ten to go the top eight drivers in the field were all on the same straightaway.  With five laps remaining it was Jewell leading with Gill, Erb, Babb and Johnson in the top five.  Babb would slip slightly out of the groove allowing Johnson to get by with four to go.  Up front Jewell had successfully completed a pass on a lapped car and he would start to open some distance between himself and Gill and that would hold up all the way to the checkered flag to take the biggest win of racing career.  Gill would finish in second as Jewell thwarted Gill's attempt to win this race in back to back years.  Erb came home third followed by Johnson and Babb.

"First off, I want to thank the good Lord for a safe race," exclaimed the happy winner afterwards.  "I want to thank the great fans for coming out tonight and thanks to my crew and all my sponsors for their help," said Jewell.  "I knew I had to keep the car a little tighter in the slick part of the track, the lapped cars bothered us a little there for a while and I figured the guys behind us were catching us," said the winner.  "I want to especially thank Keith and Tader Masters for all of their help, they've been real good to me and I appreciate their efforts," Gill who finished second was pleased with his car as well considering the entire front clip of the car had to be replaced after a brake caliper broke at Florence the weekend before sending him with hard contact into the wall.  "Yes we are pleased with the effort," said Gill.  "I thought maybe I could get by him in traffic and but I was just afraid those other drivers might get by me as well," commented Gill.  "I want to thank my crew, because they thrashed all week on this thing to make it right and it was."

Completing the top ten were Freddy Smith, R.J. Conley, Earl Plessinger, Pete Parker and Mark Barber.  In preliminary events Babb was the fastest qualifier at 15.772 seconds.  Heat race winners were Babb, Erb, Steven Godsey and Jewell.  Mark Barber and Kevin Weaver won the Consy events.

MODIFIEDS:

Dan Hamstra rolled into Brownstown Speedway with one thing on his mind...victory. That feat was accomplished as Hamstra started seventh and took the victory. Heres how it all unfolded. Polesitter Adam Sasser would lead the field to the green flag, but would not hold the lead as JD Roberts would overtake him down the backstretch. The caution flag would wave one lap later as Tim Eddelman and Nelson Gingery would spin in turn two. On the restart, a battle for third place would ensue as Brent Londeree and Matt Boknecht would fight it out. Boknecht would win the battle, putting Londeree to fourth. On lap four, the yellow would fly again for Eddelman and Gingery in turn two. When racing resumed, Boknecht would challenge Sasser for the second position. Behind them, Hamstra would start his progress towards the front as he would get around Londeree for the fourth position. As this was going on, Boknecht would finally get around Sasser for the second spot. Sasser would then have to fend off Hamstra for the third position. Hamstra would take the spot away and set his sights on Boknecht. On lap 10, Hamstra would catch up to and pass Boknecht for the second position. All the madness would be put to a halt, as the yellow would fly for John Demoss who had stalled outside of turn one. The attempted restart would be called back due to the stalled car of Rob Fuqua on the backstretch. On the restart, a three way dance for the fourth position would take place between Daryl Herbert, Shelby Miles, and Sasser. Herbert would grab fourth, with Miles fifth, and Sasser sixth. What those three werent expecting was to see a white streak fly by, as Ray Humphrey would pass them all and take fourth. Up front, another three way battle would take place between Roberts, Hamstra, and Boknecht. While this was going on, disaster would strike Sasser, as he would bring out the yellow flag. During the caution, Roberts would have to give up his lead, as he would go pitside with a flat tire. Hamstra would now have the lead all to his own as racing resumed. Boknecht would try everything he could to get around Hamstra in the closing stages, but would not be able to overtake him at the checkers. Following Hamstra to the line was Boknecht, Humphrey, and Miles would round out the top five.
