MILLER HOLDS ON FOR WDRL WIN AT FREEPORT

Illinois driver survives late-race mechanical woes

By Tom Lathen and Phil Roberts
WORLD Dirt Racing League

Freeport, Ill. (Aug. 20, 2004) -- Darren Miller held off the late charge of
Steve Francis on Thursday night to win the Jumpin' Joe's/Hooker Harness 40,
a WORLD Dirt Racing League-sanctioned event held here at Freeport Raceway
Park.

The PolyDome Super Series driver from Chadwick, Ill., survived a late-race
caution flag and some unexpected mechanical problems to pick up the win in
front of the large "Pretzel City Showdown" crowd at the northwest Illinois
facility.

"It was a good race for us, and we had a good car early in the race to let
us get the lead when we needed it," said Miller. "We had some problems there
the last 15 laps. I had a four-link rod break or a bolt came out or
something, and the car wasn't very good at the end but we were able to hold
on."

After securing the pole starting position with a win in the Iowa-Illinois
Taylor Insulation pole dash, Miller fell behind outside front-row starter
Brady Smith on the opening circuit as Smith¹s Kapus-Erickson Chrysler/Big
Red Motorsports entry darted into the lead as the field raced out of turn
two.

Miller followed the early leader for the opening five laps before pulling
alongside of Smith as the pair raced down the back straightaway on lap six.

On the next go-around, Miller placed his car number 32D on the bottom
through turns three and four and outran Smith out of the corner to grab the
advantage.

The race's first caution flag was waved on lap 25 when Steve Kosiski¹s car
number 52 slowed to a halt in turn two, with the second caution coming out
directly following the restart when series points leader Kyle Berck also
slowed in turn two with mechanical problems.

When racing resumed, Francis roared into second in his Larry Morning-owned
entry, and on lap 28 the Ashland, Ky., driver showed a front fender to the
race leader as the pair raced out of turn two and headed down the back
straightaway.

Miller was able to regain control, however, and prior to the final caution
flag, two laps from the finish, had moved out to a five-car length advantage
over Francis.

With Francis in tow, Miller won the two-lap sprint to the finish, with Smith
wheeling his car number 2 to a third-place finish.

"The way the car was, I sure didn't need those cautions toward the end,"
commented Miller.

"After I ran a few laps, I could get it kind of smoothed out, but on those
restarts, it was a hand full. We managed, though, and that's the important
thing."

Smith's third-place finish pulled the Solon Springs, Wis., series rookie to
within 47 points of Berck in the WDRL point standings.

In the modified portion of the Mark Verbeck on Annawan, IL took the top honors in the 20 lap A-main.   A solid field of 21 modifieds were on hand for the $500 win event.  Verbeck took the lead on the second lap and was able to hold off several challenges from Scott Lemke and Mike Garland.  Lemke and Garland would finish on the second and third spots while Marty Thompson of Mineral, IL and Rich Smith of Davenport, IA would round out the top 5.

WORLD DIRT RACING LEAGUE: A hometown victory

The flagman waves the checkered flag as the Modified class wraps up its hot laps Thursday night at Freeport Raceway Park.

Chadwick's Darren Miller wins race versus best in the Midwest

By Eric Huenefeld, For The Journal-Standard

FREEPORT -- Chadwick's Darren Miller began his racing career not too long ago racing Sportsman cars on Saturday nights at Freeport Raceway Park.

Picking up the class quick, he moved to the Late Model Division. He won a track championship, and moved on to other area race tracks and soon began to travel across the midwest and nationally.

This season he's already won a race in the Stacker 2 Xtreme Dirtcar Series as a rookie, and also won a $20,000-to win race in Oklahoma this spring.

But Thursday night at Freeport Raceway, it came full circle.

Miller came home the big winner in the Polydome Super Series' "Jumpin Joe's/Hooker Harness 40" at Freeport Raceway Park, taking the $5,000 prize at the place he considers home.

"It's always nice to come back and win in front of your home fans," Miller said. "Especially in a big race like this."

Miller earned the pole for the main event by winning the six-lap pole dash comprised of the top qualifying drivers in the evening's heat races. He was challenged right off the bat by Solon Springs, Wis., driver Brady Smith. Smith, the winner of the Polydome Super Series "Pretzel City Shootout" in April at FRP, took the lead from Miller on the opening lap and held that spot for the first seven circuits.

On Lap 8, Miller would power underneath Smith in the fourth turn to take the lead. The field proceeded to string out and ran under green for the first 24 laps, until a caution for Omaha, Neb., driver Steve Kosiski brought out the first of four yellow flags. The yellow flag gave Smith and last year's Freeport winner Steve Francis a chance to cut into Miller's 15-carlength lead.

Francis would slip into second and set his sites on Miller. Francis appeared to be reeling in Miller, but needed a caution flag, and with only 2 laps to go, he got it.

Orangeville's Steve Morgan brought out the final caution on Lap 38 and set up a two-lap dash to the checkers, with Miller keeping Francis at bay, winning by three carlengths. The checkered flag was a welcome site for Miller.

"About midway through, I broke a four-length rod," the winner explained. "The rear end was moving all around, and I was telling (my crew) 'I'm broke,' and they were like, 'too bad.' I'm glad that held together."

Following Miller, Francis and Smith to the line was Milan's Ray Guss Jr. and Winona, Minnesota's Keith Foss. Keokuk, Iowa driver Tommy Elston made the biggest charge of the night, coming from the 20th spot to 9th.

The undercard for the evening was the Modified Division, who ran a 20-lap main event. Annawan driver Mark Verbeck was the big winner on this night, beating out regular foes Scotte Lemke and Mike Garland. Verbeck took the lead from polesitter Andy Dinges on Lap 2 and never looked back, despite numerous challenges from Lemke and Garland.

Out-of-towners Marty Thompson and Rich Smith rounded out the top five.

The WORLD Invades Freeport Raceway Park

FREEPORT, IL The World Dirt Racing League is prepared to make it’s second and final stop of the 2004 season at Freeport Raceway Park on Thursday August 19th. That night will mark the 2nd annual “Pretzel City Showdown”. The highlight of the evening will be the “Jumpin Joes/Hooker Harness 40” paying $5,000 to the winner. Last year’s event saw Ashland, KY’s Steve Francis hold of a hard-charging Darren Miller of nearby Chadwick, IL to claim the top honors.

The event is expected to draw drivers from as far away as Nebraska, Kentucky, and Minnesota. The impressive roster includes track champions from throughout the Midwest and even a past NASCAR national champion or two. Included in this list is two time WDRL champion and former International Motor Contest Association national champion Kyle Berck of Marquette, Nebraska. Berck has used the momentum of three wins in his last six WDRL starts to recapture the points lead and is making a run at his third straight title. He will need to keep that momentum up as he hopes to hold of WDRL rookie Brady Smith of Solon Springs, WI who currently sits in the runner-up spot. Smith will be a man to watch as he made history by being the first rookie to ever win a WDRL main event at the “Spring Nationals” in Freeport this past April.

Joining these two will be such traveling stars such as brothers Steve, Ed and Joe, members of Nebraska’s legendary Kosiski racing family. Joe and Ed are both former Nascar national champions. Blue Grass, Iowa’s Gary Webb, another Nascar national champion, is expected to join the Kosiski brothers. 46 late models were in attendance this past April and another strong field is expected.

Many late model competitors from Freeport Raceway Park’s Saturday night roster will be competing against the touring stars. The local drivers look forward to the opportunity to step up to the plate against the WDRL’s regulars. Freeport’s Terry Huizel explains “I like it when they come to town. They’re the best in the Midwest. We get to run against them, but we’re on our home track. That help’s us out. Plus, the drivers on the series are good guys. They don’t tear up our equipment. They treat us with respect, and we treat them with respect.”

Huizel is a 34 year veteran of Freeport Raceway Park and knows his way around the big half-mile oval. During his career he has notched numerous feature victories. Topping that list of achievements is a victory at the 2003 Rebel held each fall at the raceway. At last years WDRL appearance, Huizel led the Freeport drivers with a twelfth place finish. Armed with a new Rocket race car and a couple of new engines, fans should be on the lookout for an even better finish from Huizel behind the wheel of his familiar orange number 72.

During his 34 years, Huizel has driven for many different promoters and racing series. One that is well known to local fans is the Nascar Busch All-Star Series. That series, led by then director of competition Jim Wilson, had made a few stops in Freeport from time to time. After Nascar disbanded the tour, Wilson started the WDRL which is in its third year of existence. “The WDRL is a lot better than the Nascar All-Star Series. Jim Wilson is doing a great job. He’s listening to what people want. Both the fans and drivers love it.”

Agreeing with Huizel’s comments about fans loving the WDRL is longtime Freeport fan Gary Popp. Popp will travel throughout Illinois and Iowa for the opportunity to see the top dirt late model drivers compete. “There’s nothing better than to see the Midwest’s best drivers at your home track.. Seeing the drivers and their huge haulers is incredible. The WDRL puts on a well run show with friendly officials. They even talk to the fans after the races. It’s a class organization.”

Joining Huizel on the track from Freeport’s Saturday night roster is Hazel Green, WI’s Dan Shelliam. In only his second full season in a late model, Shelliam captured a heat race victory and a stunning victory in the pole dash at the April event. That put him the front row for the $5,000 to win feature race. “We got caught with a bad set up for the feature”, said Shelliam. “We had some lead in the wrong spot and the wrong spring in the car.” Shelliam finished twelfth in the main event. Fixing those problems could make the Hazel Green driver a front runner come feature time on the August 19th

“We’re aiming and ready for that race. We’ve been trying some different things and seeing how they work. We’ve had pretty good results. We’ve been able to go from the back to the front at Freeport.”

Though in only his second full season behind the wheel of Davis, IL’s Dave Becke owned number 27 late model, Shelliam has had success in other division’s. In his nine year career, he has won two Pro Stock championship at the Farley (IA) speedway and three Rebel championships in Freeport in both the Hobby Stock and Sportsman classes.

Shelliam enjoys the experience and knowledge he gains by running in a WDRL event. “Competition doesn’t hurt. It steps your game up. When you run against the big guys, you learn a lot more. It teaches you a lot. “

Shelliam and Huizel will be joined by several of Freeport Raceway Park’s local drivers as they defend their turf August 19th in the “Pretzel City Showdown”. The late models will be joined that night by the modified division which will compete in a 20 lap feature. Gate will open at 5:00 , hot laps will start at 6:30 and racing action will begin at 7:00. Admission for the night is $18 for adults, $16 for seniors and kids 6-12 are $5. Kids 5 and under are free. The pits will open at 2:00. Admission to the pits will be $25. Shelliam,Vinnedge,Foshee,Huenefeld,Maurer finish First at Freeport Raceway Park.

Dan Shelliam has been trying to work the Bugs out of the Becke Motorsports car to finish up front and it seems he is getting closer as the "World Dirt Race League" Invades Freeport for the second showing of the year.Shelliam has been touring to several different tracks and santionings working on  different set ups,all the work seems to be paying off as he was walking away from the field in the main event of the night, but a caution bunched things up on the restart,Steve Morgan used every bit of track to close the gap on Shelliam but had to settle for second, followed by Terry Huizel.
In the Modiefied class it was the "Josh Vinnedge Show" as Vinnedge started in the rear of the feature event after having trouble in his heat race not earning a decent starting spot.Josh used every caution flag that was dropped to work his way to the front and never looked back winning with Scott Lemke and Mark Verbeck following.
The Sportsman class was anyones race as a blanket would have covered Travis Denning,Toby Kuntzelman and Joe Foshees race cars at one point the racing was so tight, but to Foshees advantage Kuntzelman and Denning both pulled off the racetrack with problems Foshhe taking his fifth feature win of the season.
Joe "Racer"Huenefeld was back in victory lane with a last lap pass of Bob Silaggi in the B-Mod Class.
The Hobbystock class ended in a two lap dash for the checkers between Zach Maurer And Ed Williams,Maurer being the first to the line.

Action packed night of Racing!
The sky didnt look very promising after a set of Hot Laps in all classes,But Mother Nature did bypass Freeport Raceway Park and allowed drivers and fans alike to go racing.
In the Latemodel Feature it seemed Mark Curwen wheeling the Randy Motorsports#54 car had things pretty well under control and was going to take his second win of the season, but (Jake)Craig Jacobs#21 didnt see things in the same manner!Jacobs used every bit of the racetrack to his avantage closing the gap lap after lap  and finally overtaking Curwen on the final turn to take the win.
In the Modified class it was Mark Verbeck in the Denton Racing#90 car moving to the point and never looking back. The only threat was early during a restart,Jamie Pfeiffer got into the rear of another car causing a big pile up causing many cars severe damage, after that Verbeck had clear sailing taking the win for his first of the season.(Verbeck currently stands second in the points in the modified class)
Travis Denning#56 took the Sportsman Feature win in the caution free race winning by a half of track lead.
In The B-Mod Class Jake Seegmiller of Dubuque made his return to Freeport finishing in the same spot as his last appearence,Number#1 in the feature.
Matt Crist was victorious in the Hobbystock feature.
Jeff Rolland was first to take the checkers in the 4cyl B-Main.

Miller, Garland, Bollon and Williams Jr take Mid-Season Honors.

Darren (Thriller) Miller returned to Freeport Raceway Park this  past Saturday, but not a repeat of the previous week. With Freeport being Millers originating Home Track he was back to his Old ways! Working his way through traffic and being the first car to take the checkers!
Miller started 14th of the 18 car starting field and on the  15th circuit he took the point and never looked back as he stretched his lead by a pretty good margin and taking the Win.

Miller planned on racing lasalle speedway Saturday night to get the car dialed in for the upcoming Xtreme Race next week but the weather didnt look favorable so he decided to race on his old stomping grounds.
Darren is currently in the runner up spot for Rookie of the Year in the Stacker 2 Xtreme Dirtcar Series.

In the Modified class Scott Lemke started on the point an held off all challengers until the 18th of 20 lap main event,Lemke had to hear the Motor of Mike Garland last years modified Champion the whole race as Garland was  waiting for Lemke to slip-up.As the Two raced hard, one chose the high side and the other chose the low side of the race track as they approached a lapped car,the low side was the right choice as the upcomming lapped car was running the high side of the track also!Garland was victorious.
Earlier in the evening Garland was involved in a hit, damaging steering parts and the flywheel.
Fellow racer Ken Kostenbader came through with a flywheel for Garland allowing him to make the main event,Garland stated"Its a good thing I race with a Great bunch of guys or I would of had to sit this one out" Thanks Kenny!!!"

Bob Bollon took the lead and win from Mike Kline about midway through the feature in the Sportsman Class,Kline never giving up,challenging Bollon several times had to settle for second place.
In the Hobbystocks Ed Williams jr was up to his winning ways as he took his fifth featue win of the season.

Hot Dogs Invade Freeport

Darren(The Thriller)Miller one of the Nations Young Top Guns of Dirt Track Racing in the LateModel Class and Ron Barker who dominates the Modified Class in Iowa from Dubuqe  came to Freeport Raceway Park Saturday 17th to spoil the fun for the Weekly regulars!!

Both Miller and Barker seemed they were going to have a easy night after smoking the field in there Heat races, but as they soon  found out The Picking wasnt so easy here!!

Lyle Zanker a weekly regular in his #9 Latemodel never was threatned by any of the 20 car starting field,Zanker was in a different time zone when he took the checkered flag winning by well over a half a track lead.

Josh Vinnedge#00 of Forreston another weekly regular at Freeport Raceway, took a early atvantage of a open hole jumping from his fifth row starting spot to the point and never looking back as he finished by a comfortable lead ahead of Barker.

In the Sportsman class Dave Stichter held off Travis Denning for most of the Feature Race,Dennig overtook Stichter with five laps remaining Denning held on for the win.

Randy Leehan held off all challengers for the win in the B-Mods.

Chick Griffin was victorious in the Hobbystock Feature.

With the car count slightly down than previous weeks, showed no cut back on the action at Freeport Raceway Park. The car cout was only down a hand full with some of the regulars going away for vacations. The Pit area still topped of with no room to spare,99 cars. The cool Spring like weather didnt seem to bother the fans they came to see the action.

Short Program,Becomes a Long Night!
The week long wait to see the Feature Events in the Latemodels,Modifieds and Sportsman Class turned out to be a full night of action and setbacks to make it a very long night at the Racetrack Saturday night. It started with Jeff Larson flipping his B1 latemodel during Hot Laps not the peliminary races. Larson had to be extracated from his racecar and taken to Freeport Memorial for observation(we will keep you updated on his condition)A wreck in the Hobbystock class with yet another rollover in the Four Cyl class didnt seem to be enough  to slow things down and then Mother Nature had to put her Two cents in with a steady sprinkel of rain, drivers started loading up cars and the wetness came to a halt, allowing the show to continue and finally letting people see what they came for,The Main Events!!!!

Weather Permits, Power Don't
It all started to be a great night of racing for Freeport Raceway Park, the wet cool Saturday morning turned into a reasonably warm sunny afternoon, so fans and drivers alike was ready to go racing. With a 120 cars in the pits and a decent crowd of fans in the stands a well groomed racetrack after the really wet weather Saturday morning it was Showtime!!!
Things started out as normal with all classes running a set of hot laps followed by the Latemodels heat races.Terry Huizel winning heat#1.
Heat#2 was a great start but then Jon Rogers had a violent crash comming off of turn two, flipping end over end several time before the 61R car came to a stop not even resembeling a racecar! Fortunately Jon walked away from the crash UNINJURED. Mike Miller took the checkered flag first in heat#2.Lyle Zanker was the winner in heat#3 of the Latemodels.

Steve Wetter was the victor in heat#3 over Scott Lemke.
The Sportsman class Saw Dave Meile walking away with Heat#1,Mike Kline working his way from the back for the win in heat#2.
Terry Simon won the heat in th B-Mod Class.
And when the darkness started to set in things didn't look so good, when the light switches was turned on and nothing happened! Track Officials worked on a Transformer for a hour or more with no avail that was possibly damaged when a lightning strike damaged the scoreboard a few weeks ago. The Races were the called off By Officials until next week so the problem can be fixed properly. Everyone that has payed to see the racesth 29th should keep there ticket stubs and pit bracelets for a free pass 6-5next Sat. Give Freeport raceway Park an A+ for a 2 week delay for Opening night!!
The weather was ideal, the pits full(well over 100 cars)a very fine groomed racetrack and a happy crowd to see Mother Nature was going to cooperate to let the racing season begin.
The only class lacking cars was th B-Mods,but expect the count to grow as this is the first year for this new class,it wiil grow as it has at other tracks.
After a good round of Hotlaps and the drivers dialing there cars in for the races, the Latemodels took to the track for the heat races first.
In heat one Kevin Skipperwas the First winner of the 2004 season followed by Freeports Terry Huizel, and another Freeporter Jeff(BONE)Larson.
Heat two was won by Freeport driver Craig Jacobs with Dan Gallant and Steve Morgan finishing 2nd and 3rd.
Heat three  saw last years latemodel track champ take the checkers first followed by Mike Fryerand Jon Rogers.
The Feature event in the latemodel class was a thriller with some really hard charges from Terry Huizel and Dan Gallant but no one could overcome The Bone,Jeff Larson. Larson drove a steady line the whole race and made no mistakes brining him the win and second victory this season.
The fist heat in the A-mod cass was dominated by Steve wetter with Josh Vinnedge trying his best to run Wetter down but ran out of laps setteing for second place followed byMarty Thompson.
Jason Leveington lead fron green to checkers inthe second hest followed by Mike Shnirla and Mike Hill.
Mark Verbeck took the win in the 3rd heat followed by Mike Garland and Jason Schuller
The Modifieds were as exciting as usual with another victor not slipping up and maintaining a smooth line.Tim Sorn lead from flag to flag with only one caution flag bunching the field up.Mike Garland of Morrison Il made attempt after attempt to get on the low side of Sorn but just couldnt get the job done,Garland setteled for 2nd with Jason Schuller taking 3rd.
