BABB OUTCLASSES STRONG WDRL FIELD AT KANKAKEE
Illinois Driver Pockets $15,000 for Kevin Roderick Memorial Win

(Kankakee, IL) Shannon Babb proved to be the class of the field Friday night, leading from start-to-finish to win the annual Kevin Roderick Memorial, a WORLD Dirt Racing League PolyDome Super Series event, at Kankakee Motor Speedway in Kankakee, Illinois.

The Mowequa, Illinois driver survived a flurry of caution flags in the waning laps of the 75-lap event and picked up $15,000 for his efforts.
“Donnie (O’Neal) showed me how to get this one done a few times,”

quipped Babb after the win. “I’ve always followed him around here and finally I had the chance to have a pretty good car and get out in front.”

“I feel like we ran a hundred and forty laps tonight, but I’m glad it was only 75 under green,” he added. “I’m glad these fans came out to watch us and I hope we put on a good show.”

After a runner-up finish in the Iowa-Illinois Taylor Insulation Pole Dash, Babb started second in the 26-car field and went to the top side of the race track to grab the advantage on the opening circuit, with pole-setter Don O’Neal running second, followed closely by Kyle Berck, Terry Casey, and Mark Teske.

The first caution flag of the night came out on lap 20 when Jimmy Mars slowed with engine problems, but when racing resumed, Babb again roared into the lead just ahead of O’Neal and Berck, with Dennis Erb moving into fourth.

After winning the Roderick Memorial in 2001, 2002 and 2003, O’Neal saw his chances of a fourth consecutive Memorial victory disappear when his car number-71 slowed and retired for the night on lap 44.

With Babb racing to impressive leads, a pack of six drivers, Erb, Darren Miller, Berck, Scott James, Keith Foss and Brady Smith swapped positions lap after lap trying to stay close to the leader as they diced through congested traffic.

The race was slowed by caution flags on laps 45, 50, 60, and 62, but on each restart, Babb’s Car City/J & J Steel entry was able to hold off the challengers to maintain his advantage.

“The cautions kind of threw a wrench into it,” noted Babb. “The tires would kind of go through heat cycles and differences, but once the front tires got going pretty good and I could steer, I was alright.”

“I know Dennis (Erb) and Darren Miller were pretty good and they were breathing down my neck on those restarts.”

Babb took the checkered flag a comfortable distance ahead of James, who had come from the 20th starting position after an equally impressive back-to-front run in the second consolation race.

Erb held off a hard-charging West Steidinger for third, with Miller, who had run as high as second throughout the middle stages of the event, finishing fifth. Foss wheeled his car number-95 to a sixth place finish, followed by Roger Long, and Denny Eckrich.

Kyle Berck maintained his PolyDome Super Series points lead with an eleventh place finish, four positions better than Brady Smith, who finished 15th. Both drivers appeared to be headed for top five finishes before running into problems late in the race.

Berck suffered a flat tire during the lap 62 caution period, and Smith limped to the infield with rear suspension damage following a front stretch altercation with Matt Miller a few laps later.

And now....the story by Jeff Bayless

Babb Wins Roderick Memorial
Jeffrey A. Bayless

Kankakee, IL (Sept 3)  The arrival of September and Labor Day Weekend means that one of the area's biggest and most prestigious events, the Kevin Roderick Memorial was at hand.  The 75 lap $15,000 to win Late Model feature event at Kankakee Motor Speedway was sanctioned by the World Dirt Racing League PolyDome Super Series (WDRL) bringing to this area it's first taste of the non-qualifying passing point line-up system.

Shannon Babb of Mowequa, IL affectionately known as the Mowequa Missle by his fans grabbed the point on the start from his outside pole starting spot and never surrendered the lead pacing the entire 75 laps to pick up his 3rd big event in two weeks (Kentucky Klassic & My Old Kentucky Home Shootout the previous weekend).  "Donnie (O'Neal) showed me how to get this done, I've followed him around here quite a few times.  Finally, I had the chance to have a pretty good car and get out in front.”  Stated the victorious Babb.  "This is a pretty nice little racetrack here, I’m glad these fans came out to watch us and I hope we put on a good show.”  continued Babb from victory circle in front of a packed house.

Babb and the winner of the past three Roderick Memorials, Don O'Neal, charged into the first set of turns neck and neck with Babb claiming the lead down the back stretch with Kyle Berck in the third spot and the field scattered 2 and 3 wide behind the top 3.  By the time the first caution flew on the 21st circuit for a slowing Jimmy Mars, Babb had clearly established himself the class of the field with O'Neal, Berck, Keith Foss, and Dennis Erb Jr. rounding out the top 5.   O' Neal's quest for his 4th consecutive Roderick Memorial came to an end on the 44th circuit when his mount lurched than slowed coming out of two and O'Neal limped it around and off the track at the pit exit in turn 1.  As Babb raced away to sizeable leads in between cautions Erb, Darren Miller, Berck, Scott James (coming from the 20th starting spot), Foss, and Brady Smith put on a heck of a show behind him as they battled amongst themselves in congested traffic.  Wes Steidinger and John Gill would also make appearances in this fray as the race went past the 50 lap mark.  Berck would eventually have to make a pit stop and be relegated to the back of the pack opening the door for Smith who came in to the show only trailing Berck by 15 points for the WDRL PolyDome championship, however Smith would break and retire 12 laps from the end of the race erasing any chance he had of closing the point gap even more.  James would cap off his impressive run from 20th with the runner-up spot with Erb coming home 3rd.  Impressive youngster, Wes Steidinger who would spin while racing for 4th 13 laps from the end would race his way back to 4th edging Miller by a nose at the stripe.  Foss, Roger Long, Denny Eckrich, Kevin Weaver, and Gill came home 6th through 10th.

Babb drives a Jay Dickens powered CJ Rayburn race car sponsored by Car City, J&J Steel, Platinum Motors and RV,  and Watters Auto Land.

O'Neal the Real Deal at Kankakee
Jeffrey A. Bayless

(May 21 Kankakee, IL)  The Northern All-star Late Model Series (NALMS) invaded Kankakee Motor Speedway Friday night bringing a healthy crowd of fans to this North Eastern Illinois racing facility located outside of Kankakee at the fairgrounds.  With a tornado watch in effect and a chance of thunderstorms looming 34 Late Models took to the track on this warm and humid spring day.

22 of the 34 took the green for the 30 lap $2000 to win main event with fast qualifier Don O'Neal leading pole sitter Kevin Weaver through the first set of turns followed by a raging battle for third between Ted Loomis, Dennis Erb Jr., Richie Hedrick, and Joe Harlan.  O'Neal quickly separated from the pack and began to give new meaning to the word domination.  By the 10th lap he was encountering the back markers with a straight away lead over Weaver.  Normally in a situation like this, once the leader reaches slower traffic, it allows the field to reel the leader in a bit and make the race more interesting.  However in this race in slower traffic O'Neal was, tied up he was not.  His machine was handling perfectly anywhere on the racing surface, top, bottom, middle and he sliced and diced his way through the field at an astonishing rate, virtually unprecedented.  By the time the caution flew on lap 25 for Mike Mataragas, who spun in turn 4, he had put well over half the track between himself and Weaver and was working on lapping the 6th place machine of Joe Harlan.  Once the green flew again O'Neal took up where he had left off and quickly marched away from Weaver and Erb again.  What the caution did do, however, was set up a good battle for the 4th through 6th spots between Ted Loomis, Bob Pohlman, and Joe Harlan.  This trio stormed into turns 3 and 4 on the 28th lap three wide battling hard for position and when the checkers flew they came across the line O'Neal, Weaver, Erb, Loomis, Harlan, and Pohlman.  Frank Reaber, Brian Shirley, Wes Steidinger, and Matt Rhyne rounded out the top ten, all 1 lap in arrears.  Heat wins went to O'Neal, Weaver, Erb, and Loomis, with RJ Gall taking the last chance race.

In UMP Modified action Tommy Kroll jumped to the early lead ahead of Lance Dehm, and fast qualifier Matt Bachman.  Dehm charged into 1 and 2 on the second lap diving to the low side trying to wrestle the lead away from Kroll but lost the handle on his mount opening the door for several competitors to fly by before he regained the handle and fell back in line.  One lap later the race was under caution because of an accident involving the machines of Kevin Hastings and Rick Thomas.  This set up an unfortunate set of circumstances for Kroll.  When the race restarted as Kroll and Bachman battled for the lead Jeremy Aimone spun at the start in between turns 3 and 4.  Unbeknownst to the leaders they came charging hard into that set of turns and Kroll had no place to go but to slide into harms way.  Kroll was able to continue, however it was obvious his machine was not up to par as he quickly fell back in the field after the restart.  Bachman took over the point at this stage and slowly pulled away from the field and went unchallenged to the checkers beating Phil Line, Joel Funk, Scott Bull, and Lance Dehm to the finish line.  Dehm won the dash with Dave Smith and Jim Farris taking the heats.  Jay Ledford won the conci.

In street stock action Steve Thorsten did what no other competitor had been able to do so far this season, beat Shannon Shutter.  Shutter led the first 13 laps but fell pray to Thorsten as they took the white flag and Thorsten charged on to the win.

The Real Deal Dominates Kankakee Opener
by Jeffrey A. Bayless

(Kankakee, IL April 16)  Spring is here and that can mean one thing, the roar of high-powered racing machines has returned to the area.  On this pleasant evening 44 Late Models signed in to take their shot at the $5000 dollar prize with 24 UMP Modifieds present to take their shot at the $750 opening night prize.

A stellar field of Late Models were present with several solid competitors not cutting the mustard to make it to the 18-car field for the 40 lap main event.  The Real Deal Don O'Neal jumped from his outside row 1 starting position to take the early lead followed by a 4-car duel for second between Lil John Provenzano, Shannon Baab, Joe Harlan, and Brian Birkofer.  O'Neal was making mincemeat of the field catching the back markers and running away from the battle raging behind him.  However, on the 13th circuit his huge lead was erased when Birkofer spun off the course in turn 1 after making contact with Provenzano as they battled for third.  This allowed Baab to take a shot at the lead when racing resumed as O'Neal had his hands full with the now free from traffic Baab.  As the race reached it's halfway point, O'Neal and Baab were engaged in a door-to-door, fender-to-fender battle for the lead with fast qualifier Billy Drake battling Provenzano for third several car lengths back.  A little further back Dennis Erb Jr., defending track champion Joe Harlan, Frank Reaber, and Darren The Thriller Miller were engaged in a heavy battle for 5th.   But what looked to be a battle to the finish ended on the 24th circuit when Baab abruptly slowed and pulled off course allowing O'Neal to cruise to the win unchallenged over the last 16 laps.  Behind him Drake and Erb coming from the 5th row finished 2nd and 3rd respectively with Provenzano and Reaber rounding out the top 5.  Rich Hedrick also had an impressive evening having to start at the back of his heat for being late to the track he worked his way to the 4th and final transfer spot in the 10 lap heat and came charging from 15th to finish 7th in the main event.  Heat wins went to Harlan, Reaber, O'Neal, and Provenzano with Matt Rhyne and Brett The Jet Seivert taking the semi wins.  Only two caution slowed the action over the course of the 40 lap feature.

In UMP Modified action Aaron Ricketts jumped to the early lead but his lead was short lived as Matt Bachman and Tommy Kroll quickly converged on him going 3 wide through 3 and 4 on the 3rd circuit.  Kroll came out of that battle with the lead and quickly separated from the field and by the half way point had a sizeable lead over Bachman, Ricketts, and Lance Dehm who were battling for second.  Then with 5 laps to go Kroll suddenly slowed pulling off course followed by Ricketts who did the same thing one lap later.  This handed the lead to Bachman but after a quick caution Dehm went charging by in turn one on the restart taking the lead and never looking back.  Kevin Hastings came home second followed by Bob Pohlman, Bachman, and Jim Farris.  Ricketts won the 6 car dash for the pole, with Joel Funk, Kelly Jones, and Kevin Hastings taking the heat wins and Phil Line winning the conci.

In other racing action Shannon Shutter out dueled Billy Wicker for the win in the street stock feature.  Kevin Lenzen came home third followed by Steve McCarty.
