For a short time on Saturday, November 20, the
bells and whistles of the casino will be replaced by bench racing and
acceptance speeches at the Argosy Casino as the O'Reilly MLRA rolls in for
their annual awards banquet.
The night will kick off at 5:30 pm with a social
hour that is sure to see plenty of bench racing and talk of the highly
competitive on-track action held throughout the 2004 racing season. The next
phase of the evening begins at 7:00 pm with dinner being served to all in
attendance. Immediately following the dinner it's time to hand out the
hardware as the top points earners will be recognized for their
accomplishments during the season.
Attendance is open to the public with tickets
being $30.00 in advance and $35.00 at the door. For more information or to
purchase tickets contact Harriett at 816-650-5063.

Speedway in Muskogee, OK that sealed the title and held off hard charging

Alan Vaughn rolled into the beautiful Outlaw Motor
Speedway looking to not only notch another win on the 2004 O'Reilly MLRA tour,
but to also close the book on his fourth title run with the series. As the
checkered flag fell on the forty lap A feature Sunday Vaughn had grabbed both
to cap off a historic run to the championship.
As the green flag dropped outside front row
starter Mike Brown grabbed the top spot and held the point with polesitter
Vaughn shadowing his every move looking for a way around the front runner.
His chance opened up on lap thirteen as Vaughn was able to move past, but not
to be outdone Brown grabbed the lead once again only two laps later. Brown's
spot at the front was short lived as Vaughn was able to work past once again
two laps later. The front two quickly had company in the form of fourteenth
starting Steve Kosiski who had quickly worked his way through the field
charging to the front. The trio of Vaughn, Brown, and Kosiski diced back and
forth for the remainder of the event taking the checkered flag ahead of
Kosiski and Brown.
By virtue of the win Vaughn completed the run to
his third straight O'Reilly MLRA Championship to go along with his title run
in 1995.

Raceway Rumblings
By Mike Mathis
Great News! Jon Johnson is going home! I talked with Jon this
morning and he is getting released from the burn center in Wichita. Jon stated;
"I'm still in pain and have a lot of rehabilitation to go through but I
convinced the doctors to let me go home."
Jon also said; " They replaced the dressings this morning and they did it
without any pain killers. That was the only way I could go home." I guess Jon
believes in the renowned saying, Home is where the heart is. Jon has been
through two surgeries and numerous skin grafts. It is very important that he
walks and stretches the tendons in his ankles that were badly damaged.
We are all very happy that Jon is able to go home and we need to give him
moral support in his rehab effort. Jon's recovery is going to be a painful and
long-term process. We urge you to continue stay in touch with Jon and his
family. In our next and last column of the year will provide ways to send Jon
gifts and cards. You can always send cards and letters to DCRP, 804 West McArtor
, Suite 103, Dodge City, KS 67801 and we will forward them to Jon.
This Saturday night and Sunday afternoon we will have the final race event of
the 2004 race season. This is the 1st Annual Fall Classic Invitational hosting
racecars from around the region in the Modified, Super and Street Stock
Divisions. Come out and show these drivers our support of them and the finest
dirt track in the United States.
There will be drivers from more than 4 states to see who really is the best
of the best. This last weekend of the year we will guarantee our race fans one
of the most competitive and best race events you can watch. There are
sensational drivers coming to Dodge City that have heard about the great
facilities and race track we have.
On Saturday night at 6 p.m. we will kickoff the weekend with Qualifying races
and main events that will lock-in the top finishers for Sunday afternoons
finale. We will be racing Modifieds, Super and Street Stocks along with the
Cruisers during Saturday's event.
On Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. we will have the Modifieds, Super and Street
Stocks along with the final points race for the Hornets. There will be last
chance races to earn starting positions in the final main event. We will also
have trophy dashes with Saturday night main event winners that will determine
the front of the pack starting positions for the finale main event. By the time
the final's are ready to go onto the track we will have a great field of
racecars that will put on a race that will be nothing less than spectacular.
Grandstand admission for each race is only $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for teens
13-16, $3.00 for kids 6-12 with 5 and under Free. Saturday's race time is 6pm
with start time on Sunday at 2pm. Pit admission is $25.00 per person regardless
of age. Parents have to sign Minors Releases for anyone under 18 years of age.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
O'Reilly MLRA Latemodel Stock Cars
along with the World Dirt Racing League
MLRA & WDRLA at Lakeside Speedway
Friday night 10/8 and Saturday 10/9
LATE PASS GIVE STEVE KOSISKI WDRL WIN AT LAKESIDE SPEEDWAY
Brady Smith Wraps up Series Points Title with Fourth Place Finish
(Kansas City, KS) Steve Kosiski roared past Terry Phillips four laps from
the checkers Saturday night to win the 50-lap Capital Federal Savings Late
Model Showdown, a WORLD Dirt Racing League event, at Lakeside Speedway near
Kansas City, Kansas.
The win completed a two-night turnaround for the Papillion, Nebraska
veteran, who failed to qualify for the series feature event the night before
on the Lakeside Speedway half-mile.
“Terry Phillips is a great racer and a good runner, and it felt good to be
up there running with the good guys tonight,” quipped Kosiski following the
win. “We’ve had some tough nights, and last night was definitely disgusting
for us.”
“The rains hit pretty hard Thursday night and it made the track hard for
them to prepare last night,” he added. “They did an very good job preparing
the race track tonight and made it good and raceable for all of us to run
on.”
Kosiski started fifth in the 28-car field but darted past second row
starters Kelly Boen and Eric Pember at the drop of the green flag, to settle
into the number three position behind Phillips and Denny Eckrich the first
trip in front of the grandstand.
With the leaders running through traffic, the race was slowed by a caution
flag on lap ten when Winona, Minnesota’s Keith Foss got into the wall in
turn two. Kosiski took advantage of the race stoppage and raced past Eckrich
and into the runner-up spot on the ensuing restart, with Phillips driving to
a seemingly comfortable advantage in his car number 75.
Kosiski began chopping into the southern Missouri driver’s lead and grabbed
the top spot momentarily as the two front-runners diced through lapped
traffic on lap 19, only two lose the point before the leaders crossed the
start-finish line. Kosiski again took a shot at the leader a pair of laps
later, but Phillips was able to keep his Presley’s Country Jubilee/GRT/Monte
Carlo in front by less than a car length as the pair raced through the
corners.
The final caution flag came out on lap 32, setting the stage for Kosiski’s
late race heroics. The driver of the TB & Company/Double D Hook ‘N Go
sponsored car number-52 stalked the front-running Phillips for the next
dozen circuits before pulling alongside the leader on lap 44. Three laps
later, Kosiski powered to the outside racing out of turn two and outran
Phillips down the backstretch to grab the lead.
“You really had to watch how far you got into turn four,” said Kosiski of
his late-race pass. “But turn two really helped me because I could actually
go above Terry a little bit. I knew I wasn’t ever going to get room with
Terry there, so I had to keep working turn two and hoping something would
happen to where I could get enough momentum coming off.”
“I knew if I passed him too soon I would be in trouble,” he added. “I’m just
glad it worked out the way it did."
Denny Eckrich overpowered Phillips on the white flag lap to grab second,
with Phillips holding off a fast-finishing Brady Smith for third.
Smith’s fourth place finish wrapped up the 2004 PolyDome Super Series
driver’s championship for the 26-year old Wisconsin native. Smith, of Solon
Springs, became the first driver is series history to win both the series
championship and the Seubert Calf Ranches Rookie-of-the-Year award during

By Tom Lathen and Phil Roberts
WORLD Dirt Racing League
(Kansas City, KS) -- Brady Smith outran veteran Missouri
driver Terry Phillips Friday night following a late-race restart to win the
first night of the Capital Federal Savings Late Model Showdown, a WORLD Dirt
Racing League PolyDome Super Series event, here at Lakeside Speedway.
October 8, 2004
With the 35-lap victory, the Solon Springs, Wis., driver can wrap up the WDRL
drivers¹ championship by simply taking the green flag in the second round of
the Late Model Showdown at Lakeside on Saturday night.
"We had a great run here tonight," said Smith following the win. "The guys
worked real hard on the car all night, and had the thing dialed in. It was
kind of a handful at the beginning. I don't know if it was the track or the
car that came to us in the end, but this is a great win.
"I've never had the opportunity to race Terry (Phillips) before," he added.
"I've heard a lot of good stuff about him, and I am just happy to hold off a
veteran like him at a track we had never been at before."
After winning the six-lap Iowa-Illinois Taylor Insulation Pole Dash, Smith
started on the inside pole and darted into the lead at the drop of the green
flag with Omaha, Nebraska's John Anderson running a close second, just ahead
of Phillips and Kevin Kile.
The first of six caution flags waved on lap six when Kelly Boen got turned
around in turn three, with a second caution coming a lap later when Anderson
and Phillips tangled briefly in turn two while racing for second, sending
Phillips to the pits to replace a flat tire.
On the restart, Anderson outran Smith up the front straightaway and into turn
one to take over the lead. But three laps later, on lap 10, Smith returned the
favor, roaring off the bottom out of turn four to grab the
advantage as the pair raced side by side in front of the grandstands.
Anderson's THT Designs/Rocket/Grand Prix regained the point on lap 11. But
following a lap-16 caution period, Smith grabbed the top spot for good,
powering to the bottom into turn one, leaving Anderson to battle it out with
Denny Eckrich for second, just ahead of Tommy Rowe and Phillips, who had
steadily worked his way back through the field following his lap-seven tangle.
The race was slowed by two more caution periods on laps 23 and 25, allowing
Phillips to wheel into second. But over the final 10 circuits, Smith's Kapus-Erickson
Chrysler/Big Red Motorsports entry proved to be class of the field, winning
the race to the checkers by a dozen car lengths.
"We finally got this place figured out in the last 12 laps," Smith said. "I
figured out (turns) one and two earlier in the race, but in those last twelve
laps, I finally figured out how to run through (turns) three and
four.
"Those last few laps, I could put the car in the corner and mash the gas all
the way through," he added.
A total of 77 Super Late Models went through technical inspection for the
first of two nights of racing, which was co-sanctioned by the Midwest Late
Model Racing Association (MLRA).

The 2nd Annual Al Bodenhamer Memorial is now in the record books! David
Turner of Adrian Missouri and a long time friend of the late Al Bodenhamer was
both honored and excited at his winning of tonight's event!
"Al Bodenhamer's fight with his Cancer was hard to watch" stated Turner in
remembering his friend. "Jason and his family put their lives on hold for the
last couple of years so that Al could enjoy what time he had left" Turner
continued. "Jason stayed close and took care of the business that the family
had built, raced when he could and was married to Jackie all in time that Al
could see that his Son Jason was settling down" Turner concluded.
The icing continued for the Adrian State Bank sponsored Rocket racer when
Turner took the honors by winning the Race Engine Builders event for his long
time engine builder and Crew
Chief Scott Bailey of Peculiar, Missouri. "Scott's been there for me in so
many ways, he's put us together more than once and he's held our Team together
through all we've been through" Turner joked up when remembering where he's
been.
Al Purkey of Coffeyville Kansas came in second battling with Blue Grass Iowa's
Gary Webb taking third. Coming in -- in 4th place after never having seen
Adrian Missouri nor having run on anything as small as Adrian was California's
Mike Johnson in the 2J towing in from Clovis California. Now if people only
knew, Mike Johnson is a hitter from the small Central California town nestled
between Bakersfield and Fresno where he's had many a lap at the famed Oildale
Track - so Adrian had to seem like home. Following Johnson was the newly
crowned MARS Champion Terry Phillips, then in sixth it was Jason Bodenhamer.
Jason Bodenhamer who had less than 40 hours to build a brand new race car
from his devastating crash at Wheatland Missouri on Saturday night. Tonight
starting the feature would have been like winning the Main event for
Bodenhamer - his Father would have been so proud. Kansas City Kansas driver
Brett LaFollete held down the seventh position while Ken Schrader finished
eighth then it was David Barker Aaron Seabaugh TJ Kuykendall and Alan Vaughn
crossing the line in 12th.
With 35 Cars on hand for the start of Speed weeks in Kansas City!

Al Purkey nabs Wheatland Fall Classic
Title
Clint Brown
October 3, 2004
Al Purkey showed once again why he is a dominant
force when the O'Reilly MLRA Thunder Tour rolls into town as he bested a field
of forty-six cars that traveled to Wheatland Raceway for the Third Annual Fall
Classic.
Purkey jumped to the front of the pack as the
green flag waved, but the going wasn't easy as the #45 of Keokuk, IA's Tommy
Elston applied some heavy pressure looking to take over the top spot. Elston
was able to briefly work his way to the lead, but Purkey quickly found a line
to his liking to move back out front and open up a three car length advantage
as the leaders entered lapped traffic. While the two front runners dealt with
the slower cars Terry Phillips closed up on the bumper of Elston all while
Gary Stolba and Jason Bodenhamer battled it out for the fourth position. The
lead pack sliced through lapped traffic with the front three separated by no
more than three car lengths with Bodenhamer working past Stolba for fourth and
quickly began reeling in Phillips. With ten laps to go the leaders were in
very heavy lapped traffic and contact with a slower car sent the #2B of
Bodenhamer on a scary ride as his car flipped multiple times into the fence at
the end of the front stretch. Thankfully Bodenhamer emerged under his own
power, but the car was done. With the cleanup completed the field went back
to green for the final ten lap dash which Purkey held on to as the field raced
across the line. Elston held on for second with Phillips, Alan Vaughn, and
Brett LaFollette rounding out the top five.

Hello Racers and Fans of
Racing............
If you read nothing else, please read the Summary of
this article I have sent to you, Feel it doesn't apply? Better guess again!
You're reading about the 'what's to come' for all of us in the near
or distant future! Read-up and ask questions of other Racers and how they are
handling this issue!
I will continue to keep you updated as I become updated. In the mean time
don't blow-off this article that is LONG and information FILLED - print it and
read it when you have time!
Pattie Frost
Summary
To sum up the most important facts, here is what you need to know:
• You cannot use a motor home or registered RV to pull you race car
trailer legally. You must register it as a truck or with apportioned plates.
• Intrastate travel: If your truck and trailer and all of its contents
weigh over 10,000 pounds but under 26,000, you need to have a federal medical
card, fire extinguisher and warning triangles. If you travel more than
150 air miles from your residence, you must also keep a log book.
• Interstate travel: If your truck and trailer and all of its contents
weigh over 10,000 pounds but under 26,000, you need to comply with all
interstate commerce regulations that were spelled out above.
• Interstate travel: If your truck and trailer and all of its contents
weighs over 26,000 pounds, it is suggested to get Apportioned license
plates, follow all commercial vehicle regulations as well as apply for
an International Fuel Tax Agreement Plan license.
• If your hauler, including the power unit and trailer, weighs over
26,000, you must have a commercial driver’s license and all other commercial
vehicle applications will apply to the vehicle.
• DOT numbers are only required on single trucks and combinations with
a
gross vehicle weight over 26,000 pounds that travel outside its home
state. These regulations do apply to everyone, not just racers; racers are not
being singled out by law enforcement. For example, people that show
horses, snowmobile racers, bass fisherman and construction businesses are all
subject to the same laws.
Many of the things talked about in this article are common requirements
for the larger truck operators or owners. Racers have never really
thought
of themselves as being engaged in a commercial enterprise and involved in
interstate commerce. As stated earlier, our haulers have been
getting
bigger, and we’re getting noticed by department of transportation law
enforcement officials. When on the road, you may come across officials
who are more informed than others, so you can do your homework now or take
your chances with them later.
Not all law enforcement officials understand completely how the racing
business fits into interstate and intrastate commerce, and this can be a
complicated and frustrating process to get caught up in. For now, you
should start getting acquainted with what is probably going to become a
fact of life for all of us.
REPRINTED FROM ALL THE DIRT RACING NEWS
Copyright 2004
By John Kaanta & Chris Burback
EAU CLAIRE, WI - All the glitz and glamour of owning a large race
hauler for most WISSOTA racers may come to a screeching halt. That is, if your
tow
vehicle is not properly registered.
Over the past few years, Department of Transportation (DOT) law
enforcement officials have been clamping down on racers because of their
haulers.
Many of the area’s racers who have been targeted by the law enforcement
officials think they were being singled out and got picked on. However, the
laws
regarding large trucks and trailers have been in place for many years
and have historically been directed to the large tractor-trailer rigs that
are more conventionally associated with a commercial enterprise.
First, WISSOTA race teams need to understand they are engaged in a
commercial enterprise while towing their race cars to and from the race
track. There are three criteria to determine if your race team is a
commercial enterprise.
The first is if you race for profit and declare prize money as income
from a race track for tax purposes, such as receiving a 1099 form or filing a
Schedule C (business income and loss) form.
Next, does your team accept products and/or money from sponsors
displayed on the race car? Just the fact that the race car has even one
sponsor
sticker automatically makes it a commercial enterprise. The argument
made regarding the sponsors is that they provide you, the racer, with cash or
contributions that they probably claim as a business expense for
advertising. Because you further that business with advertising
exposure by displaying the name on your race car, you are in the loop of
commercial
activity.
Thirdly, is the gross vehicle weight of your hauler, whether it is a
combination of a truck and trailer or a single unit, greater than 10,001
pounds? Almost everyone that has a good sized pickup truck with a
trailer, race car, parts, etc. will exceed the 10,000 pound mark.
If you answered yes to those questions, you’re about to get a big
headache and to avoid any penalties you should try to comply with all state
and
federal department of transportation regulations.
Once your racing operation has been identified as a commercial
enterprise, then the hauler you use to get the race car to and from the track
is
considered a commercial motor vehicle and falls under all the state and
federal regulations that the big trucks have. The DOT has realized
that our type of racing has turned into big business, and therefore, is
checking
our tow rigs for state and federal compliance.
Now that we’ve established that nearly every WISSOTA competitor is
involved in a commercial enterprise, let’s try to decipher vehicle
registration,
licensing and DOT regulations.
Generally speaking, if you follow the federal DOT guidelines for vehicle
registration and licensing, you will likely be within your state’s
guidelines; however, you may want to check with your local department of
transportation to be sure. Listed below are several phone numbers and

Interstate Travel
If you have a commercial motor vehicle that has a gross weight rating or
gross combination weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more, you must
comply with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR). However, this
only applies to you if you travel out of your home state, or over 100 air
miles from your residence in-state. If your hauler is in excess of 10,000
pounds, then you must adhere to the following regulations:
• You must be 21 years old and have a DOT medical card, which you can
easily obtain at a clinic or hospital after a brief physical.
• You must keep a log book of miles traveled if you travel more than
100 air miles from your residence, which is very inexpensive and can be
purchased at any truck stop. DOT regulations state that a driver can operate a
commercial motor vehicle for 10 hours per day, 15 total hours of on duty or
70
total hours in eight days.
• You must have an onboard a fire extinguisher.
• You must have warning triangles.
• You must have brakes on all axles; however, surge brakes are illegal.
• You must comply with random drug and alcohol testing.
• You must have a periodic inspection done and have a copy of that
inspection or a sticker displayed on the vehicle.
• You must complete a pre- and post-trip inspection of your vehicle as
well as keep maintenance records.
• You must also obtain and display a US DOT number, which is free and
can be obtained by calling the number listed above.
If your hauler’s gross vehicle weight is over 26,000, including the
power unit, trailer, occupants, fuel tanks, water tanks and trailer contents,
you, as a driver, must obtain a commercial driver’s license as well as comply
with the above criteria.
***
Another common misconception WISSOTA racers have is that they can
legally register their haulers as motor homes or recreational vehicles (RVs).
Registering the new, non-conventional motor homes or conventional motor
homes is legal until you attach your race car trailer and travel to the
race track, furthering a commercial enterprise. If you wish to use a motor
home as part of your commercial operation, you must register the motor home
in the “Y” (truck) class. However, if you register your motor home in the
“Y” class, you are limited to intrastate travel. Once you cross a state line
with that motor home, the registration is void, meaning every other
state traveled in sees it as an unregistered commercial vehicle, unless you
also register in those states.
If you own a race car hauler that weighs over 26,000 pounds and plan on
traveling into another state, the easiest and least expensive
registration method is with the International Registration Plan (IRP) and
utilizing
Apportioned plates. This means you register in your home state and list
the other states you plan on traveling in. The registration fee gets split
up based on the percentage of miles you travel in each listed state. Under
the IRP you must also apply for an International Fuel Tax Agreement license.
This is an agreement that requires the heavier trucks to log their
miles, fuel purchases, etc. so the IRP associated states get their fair share
of fuel tax. The truck owner must submit quarterly reports which are
subsequently reviewed to see if you owe more or less in fuel tax. Yeah,
you guessed it, more paperwork and added expense.
***
Intrastate travel, meaning you only travel within your state’s borders,
has slightly different criteria and more detailed information can be
obtained by calling your local department of transportation; those numbers and
website addresses were listed earlier.
An example of the differences in state department of transportation
regulations is vehicle length. In Wisconsin, the maximum length of a
single truck or hauler is 40 feet, or a combination of truck and trailer
cannot be longer than 65 feet and motor homes cannot be longer than 45 feet.
In
Minnesota, the maximum length of a combination truck and trailer is 75
feet.
That means that it is illegal to operate a 75 foot combination of a
truck and trailer with Minnesota registration in Wisconsin.
Lastly, but probably most importantly to many racers, alcoholic
beverages cannot be consumed in a commercial motor vehicle and can only be
transported in a commercial motor vehicle as part of the manifested shipment.
That
means that if you have a conventional motor home or one of the new haulers
that resemble motor homes, there can not be any alcoholic beverages inside
the power unit. It might also be illegal to have alcohol in a cooler inside
the trailer.
***
Exceptions
There are a few exceptions to the department of transportation
regulations.
The first is if you use a small pick-up truck, such as an S-10, Ranger
or Dakota, pull your race car with an open trailer and the total
combination is less than 10,000 pounds. The fact that you have sponsors on
your race
car may be a sticky spot with the rules; however, because the size of the
overall vehicle is small, law enforcement may overlook you.
The next exception is if your vehicle is over 10,000 pounds but under
26,000 pounds and you travel less than 150 air miles from your residence.
The final exception is if your vehicle is over 10,000 pounds but under
26,000 pounds and you travel less than 30 miles into another state
(Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan and Iowa).
***
• DOT numbers are only required on single trucks and combinations with a
gross vehicle weight over 26,000 pounds that travel outside its home
Racers have never really thought
of themselves as being engaged in a commercial enterprise and involved in
interstate commerce. As stated earlier, our haulers have been getting
bigger, and we’re getting noticed by department of transportation law
enforcement officials.

Reid Millard #14M MLRA Injury update 9-19-04
O'Reilly MLRA Update
In a phone call to St.Lukes Hospital in Kansas City Missouri this morning it
was learned that Reid Millard has been released from the hospital
today.
Late yesterday afternoon in talking with fellow racer, Chris Smyser and
a good friend of Reid's, stated that most of the test came back showing
nothing was broken just badly torn and bruised. Good News.
Reid Millard a young man of I'd say 30's to early 40's has been racing
as a hobby when his profession would allow. Reid is a very successful business
man in the Jefferson City area with the Owning and Operations of Funeral
Homes. Millard has been very active with the Boy's and Girls Clubs of
America and working within the intercity community education and
betterment groups.
Glad to hear Millard will be on the road to recovery and we look for his
return as soon as he's able.
Thanks for reading...........

Gary Stolba O'Reilly MLRA Win list at LA Raceway
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
O'Reilly MLRA Latemodel Thunder Tour 2004
Buckner, Missouri
Gary Stolba of Willow Springs drove about 200 miles across
the state of Missouri to take the first ever O'Reilly MLRA Latemodel event at
Mike White's LA Raceway in LaMonte, Missouri.
"Stolba shows up every once in a while and he's usually running in the top 5
before the night's over" stated a fellow competitor of the MLRA. "You just
don't know where he's going to race-he has good equipment and seems to like
the challenge that a new track brings" Purkey continued with a grin.
It wasn't an easy shot however as Stolba lined up on the seventh row just
behind Purkey. Passing points in the heat race contribute dramatically to the
overall program's line up. Jason Bodenhamer garnered the high-point (passing
points) front-row pole position at the start of the main.
At the drop of the Green-Flag it was Bodenhamer in the GRT-Buzzard Engine
Hitchcock Motorsports rig leading the current MLRA Champ Alan Vaughn on a drag
race with St. Joesph's Missouri's Dale Eaton settling into third for the first
several laps. By the fifth lap it was Bodenhamer, Vaughn, C.J. Lyle from his
10th starting spot on row five into third. Purkey coming from 11 had wasted no
time moving thru the field and was now in 4th followed by fellow Coffeyville
Kansas computer Russell Portwood and bringing with him Dustin Mooneyham.
Bodenhamer continued to lead Vaughn and Purkey got around
C.J. Lyle to take over 3rd. Portwood, Stolba, Mooneyham, Eaton, David Barker
and T.J. Kuykendall rounded out the top ten at the end of 10 laps.
At the half-way point with twenty laps completed Bodenhamer was catching the
tail end of the field and put Herb Nagy down a lap. Vaughn would have to
contend with Purkey and Purkey knew that Stolba had moved around both C.J.
Lyle and Portwood and was now in fourth. Dale Eaton who saw his night go bad
when he was caught up in an earlier accident bringing out the caution flag was
now mired back in the pack and on the twenty four lap was between
Purkey and Stolba as Bodenhamer continued his lead with Vaughn in second.
Herb Nagy was going thru the leaders and as Lyle riding in fifth and Portwood
in six.
Bodenhamer continued the lead when as they were once again approaching lapped
traffic. Randy Reynolds another good computer who would latter blow a motor,
may have been feeling the effects of a loss-of horsepower as he was hanging on
when he and Larry Stephonson tangled sending Bodenhamer and Vaughn into
evasive maneuvers. As the Yellow flew for the 55 Reynolds,
both Vaughn and Bodenhamer went off the track (no fence) and came up onto the
track Vaughn pulled to a stop so that the MLRA Official could check the car
and sure-enough Vaughn had cut a tire from debris where
earlier in the night the Reid Millard car crashed. Vaughn was then given the 2
laps to retire to the Pit Area and change the tire. As Vaughn pulled back out
onto the track he was now lineup in 14 for the twenty-fifth lap.
On the Green it was Bodenhamer Purkey, Stolba, Lyle, Portwood, Barker, as they
rounded the twenty-sixth lap with David Turner in seventh. As the pack
continued to head towards the ten to go, Bodenhamer still had the lead. Purkey
was beginning to feel Stolba moving around on the track Lyle was waiting for
the party in front to get started, and Turner was eyeing Portwood.
Coming down for the 34 go round, Stolba saw his move got by Purkey in the
other 33 and began to challenge the leader. On lap 36 with just four more to
go Stolba went racing! Taking the lead with Bodenhamer and Purkey once more
battling lapped traffic as they crossed the line for the Checkered flag on lap
40 it was Stolba, Bodenhamer, Purkey, Turner who had gotten by Lyle on lap 35
then Portwood, Barker and Vaughn. Gary Gorby and Clint Long
rounded out the top ten finishers.
Feature Results:
1.) Gary Stolba; 2.) Jason Bodenhamer; 3.) Al Purkey; 4.) David Turner; 5.)
C.J. Lyle; 6.) Russell Portwood; 7.) David Barker; 8.) Alan Vaughn; 9.) Gary
Gorby; 10.) Clint Long; 11.) Stephen Oerly; 12.) Randy McGraw; 13.)
T.J.Kuykendall; 14.) Larry Stephoson; 15.) Dustin Mooneyham; 16.) Dale Eaton;
17.) Herb Nagy; 18.) Larry Clawson; 19.) Kerry Schulze; 20.) Randy Reynolds;
21.) Chris Smyser; 22.) Brett LaFollette
Heat Results:
Heat 1
St.Joseph, Missouri's Dale Eaton lead wire to wire for the second time this
year taking the heat race win over N.Kansas City's Larry Clawson. Coming
home third after running in a tight battle with Clawson was Randy McGraw,
Chris Smyser continues to build back the strength in his arm-wrist with his
fourth place. David Turner, Jake Morris, Bob Cumming, Richard Weber, and
Gary Gorby round out the field.
Heat 2
The second race was stopped after a first lap crash when cars spun in front
of Reid Millard's #14M leaving him no place to go. The crash caused the
Millard car to flip. Life-Flight helicopter was dispatched to transport
Millard for precautionary measures as he complained of soreness in his neck
and tingling in his legs. Once the accident was cleared racing resumed with
Brett LaFollette taking the lead and holding off Clint Long and Russell
Portwood, Chris Smsyer took third followed by Darrell Mooneyham, Leroy
Jackson, Bob Hillge, Greg Choate (dnf), Reid Millard (dnf).
Heat 3
Al Purkey starting from the front row pole held the lead until the Yellow
flew for Kenny Bohman on lap three. On the restart Jason Bodenhamer who had
been in the catbird seat made his move and took the lead. Gary Stolba used
the action ahead as Terry Melton perhaps let off the gas watching Purkey and
Bodenhamer next thing he knew Stolba was around him for third. At the
Checkered flag it was still Bodenhamer, Purkey, Stolba, Melton, Kerry
Schulze in fifth, Stephen Oerly, Wayne Sutton, and Kenny Bohman finishing in
8th.
Heat 4
As the field took the Green Aaron Seabaugh, Thomas Hammond and CJ Lyle got
together bringing out the yellow for a restart. Once more Alan Vaughn from
the front row took the lead Rookie contender Randy Reynolds was right on
line in second followed by David Barker and long time fellow competitor of
the Missouri, Shorty Acker., C.J. Lyle, Aaron Seabaugh, John Farmer, and
Thomas Hammond rounded out the first go round. At the finish it was Vaughn
wire to wire. Reynolds in second with Lyle moving up for third. David Barker
Aaron Seabaugh, Short Acker, John Farmer and Thomas Hammond for the finish.
Heat 5
Youngster Dustin Mooneyham started off the front row and lead to the
Checkers with good racing action between Larry Stephoson, and Rookie
T.J. Kuykendall swapping the second place position. Kuykendall would take
the point when it counted to finish second. Coming in fourth was Kevin
Kiaser, Lyle Shephard in fifth, James House, Herb Nagy and Larry Moon
finishing in eighth.
1st B Feature
Terry Melton from the second row took the lead with Chris Smyser in second
on the first go round. By the third lap the yellow waved for Lyle Shephard
and Chad Clark. On the restart it was Smyser exercising the stiffness in his
arm to take the lead with Oklahoma's Melton in second and Stephen Oerly
moving around Seabaugh for third. At the halfway point it was Smyser Melton
and Oerly. Stephen Oerly was sitting in wait and was around Melton and
looking for Smyser by the lap 9. As they crossed the flag with two to go
Oerly must have been counting it down as he was on the heels and made the
move to take Smyser or was Smyser wanting a different line? As they crossed
for the white flag with one more to go Smyser garnered back the lead. Not to
be outdone at the Checkered Flag it was Stephen Orely coming across in
first, Smyser in second, Melton, Seabaugh, Gary Gorby, Bob Cumming, Chad
Clark, Leroy Johnson, Richard Weber, Lyle Shepard, Herb Nagy, Thomas
Hammond, Wayne Sutton.
2nd B Feature
David Turner took the lead on the start and held Kerry Schulz in check, A
bit of battle in the early going between Kevin Kiaser and Darrell Mooneyham
saw the match cross the line with Mooneyham in third Kiaser in fourth. Jake
Morris took fifth while Larry Moon, Shorty Acker, Kenny Bohman, Bob Hillge,
and John Farmer made up the top ten.
42 Cars in attendance tonight.

Hello Racers and Fans...........
Friday night at LA Raceway in La Monte, Missouri during the running of the
first ever O'Reilly MLRA Latemodel event during the heat races, the #14M of
Reid Millard had a car spinout in front of him and collect the # 14M causing
him to flip the Latemodel.
"Reid is a good competitor and was sorting out the field of cars when another
spun and he had no where to go" stated Alan "Cowboy" Chancellor of the MLRA.
"He whacked his head and the Helmet did crack" Chancellor concluded.
Reid Millard was Life Flighted out of the Speedway and taken to Kansas City's
St.Lukes Hospital. They have a Trauma Unit and that was the quickest way to
transport - not that it
was life-threatening.
"Due to the Privacy Act I had to wait to contact either Relatives or Reid at
the Hospital to release any information that is why the delay" stated Pattie
Frost of the MLRA.
"I spoke to Reid Millard this morning (Saturday at 9:30am) from the Hospital
and asked if it was OK to post what we knew so far." Stated Frost. "Reid said
yes, due to the Privacy Act" Frost concluded.
"Pattie, I'm in extreme pain, I'm positioned on the bed to where I cannot
move, extreme pain." I asked if he knew what they were going to do and he
stated that they were going to do a battery of tests this morning some time
and hope to know
something later today.
So, this is what we know at the present time -- he whacked the helmet good and
cracked it (don't know the brand). He was able to move arms and hands and
complained at the track of soreness in the neck and tingling in the legs and
feet.
I'll keep in touch with you up as I know.

Al Purkey of Coffeyville Kansas looks
to duplicate his
August 7th win this Saturday night
September 4, 2004 at Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Nebraska.
Al Purkey the reining O'Reilly
NCRA 2003 Champion and current point leader (2645) has a slim 69
points lead over Henderson Colorado's Kelly Boen (2576). Purkey
has a total of 4 Race Wins while Boen has 3 Race Wins.
These two fellow competitors are going to take it to
the limit with just
three O'Reilly NCRA Late Model Races
to go. After McCool's show at Junction Motor Speedway on Saturday night
they are going to return to the home of the "High Banks" where just one week
ago, Kelly Boen and Al Purkey joined the Xtreme
Dirt Car Series and TORA to compete. Boen
qualified 5th quick, won his Heat Race and started 4th in the 50 lap
feature. Purkey had a hard time with qualifying as he was
28th out of 45 cars finished 4th in his heat had to start in the 16th
starting spot for the Feature and finished with a 7th.
Don't look for third place point sitter Jason
Bodenhamer (2444) to be at Junction Motor Speedway as he's tied up in a
running for the the O'Reilly MLRA Points Race currently in 2nd place (818
points) battling with their current reining Champion Alan Vaughn of Belton
Missouri. Just 30 points separate these two Dirt Track specialists. The
O'Reilly MLRA will race on Saturday night September 4th at
Winston Missouri (rain-date Sept.5) then it's off to the Nebraska
State Fairgrounds on Monday, September 6, 2004 where
Purkey, Boen and others will meet up in Lincoln Nebraska for
the Nebraska Nationals.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Crowd Pleasers Motor Sports
Tonganoxie, KS
With the O'Reilly MLRA taking the weekend off (Aug.27, and 28) many of their
Racers took part in other Race Events around the Midwest. Here's some of the
notes we managed to read about:
Kicking off the action was the Xtreme Dirt Car Series as they joined with the
TORA Late Models to race at the High Banks in Belleville Kansas. A good field
of cars (45) turned out and Scott Drake and Al Purkey held their own while
Mike Wirada and Kelly Boen had good qualifying times to represent the Midwest
drivers.
Bolivar, Missouri was the place to be on Friday night with Chris Smyser
making his return to racing since an early season accident. Finishing 7th in
the Feature at the O'Reilly MARS event.
O'Reilly MLRA Rookie contender T.J. Kuykendall was 6th in his heat and a 5th
in the B.
Rusty Dukes started his night off on the right foot with a Heat Race Win and
17th in the Feature. Jason Bodenhamer came up short with a 18th in the
feature after a great 2nd place run in the heat. Driving both the Late Model
and the Modifieds Shane Essary had his handful. David Turner continues to
have gremlins with a 2nd in the heat and 13th in the feature. Hope I didn't
leave anyone out. Terry Phillips who is a former Champion for the O'Reilly
MLRA took the win for the night. Saturday night's event at I-44 in Lebanon
was rained out.
If you were able to attend a race on Friday night consider yourself very
Lucky! As it was
one of the worst rain-storms to hit the KC Metro. We recorded 5 plus inches
of rain in Tonganoxie alone. Flash flooding and lightning were the playing
havoc with watching the
NASCAR BUSCH Race from Bristol.
Look for racing to return to normal for the O'Reilly MLRA 2004 Thunder Tour
Series with racing getting under way on Saturday, September 4th at Winston
Speedway - rain-date to be Sunday, September 5th if needed. Then on Monday
it's off to the Nebraska Nationals at
Nebraska State Fairgrounds in Lincoln for an early afternoon event.

O'Reilly MLRA/NCRA Aug.25 postponed @ Adrian Speedway Adrian MO
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
O'Reilly MLRA
Buckner, MO
Tuesday Aug. 24, 2004 @ 3:15 p.m. (CST)
2nd Annual Al Bodenhamer Memorial Race Scheduled for Adrian
Speedway on Wednesday Aug. 25, 2004 has been postponed due to weather.
In a joint phone conversation with Jason Bodenhamer, Glenn Portzen of Adrian
Speedway and Harriett Chancellor of the MLRA this afternoon, they have
postponed the 2nd Annual Al Bodenhamer Memorial due to the extreme weather
that has hit the Kansas City area.
"Last night in Rich Hill, MO (about 20 miles south of the track) they had over
20 semi trailers over-turned at a local Trucking Company, then again today
we've been hit with another 3 or 4 inches of rain" stated Portzen. The KC
Metro is set for another round of storms this evening and Adrian Speedway may
not have time to dry out properly for the parking of the spectators which
would be the hardship.
"This is only a postponement and we will get this race in this year" stated
Jason Bodenhamer.
We will post the date as soon as we know it.

O'Reilly MLRA
Buckner, MO
Four yellow flags couldn't stop the man from Belton Missouri Saturday night
"All week I just felt ready for this win" stated Alan Vaughn the reinging
O'Reilly MLRA Champion.
"We did real good at Wheatland last time we were here so I was looking forward
to this race" stated Vaughn while celebrating Sunday evening with one of his
sponsors Joel Kokoska of Weld Racing at the local Hooter's in Overland Park,
Kansas.
Vaughn and his Rocket by Rocket - Smitty's Racing Engines, Helt's Turf Farm,
Super Clean Pluming, Bates County Heating and Cooling rig started on the front
row with high point leader of the night Al Purkey. "The last time we raced at
Wheatland we won" Purkey stated earlier in the week "Wheatland's always been
good to us" Purkey concluded. Tonight was no different as won his Heat Race
leading it wire to wire.
At the drop of the Green Flag it was truly a drag race between the two
O'Reilly MLRA Champions with Vaughn getting the nod as they crossed the line.
Purkey was followed by Jason Bodenhamer, David Barker and C.J.Lyle for the
first five laps.
By the eleventh lap the leaders were still Vaughn, Purkey, Bodenhamer, Barker
and Lyle. Gary Webb got around Larry Jones. Coming down for the 15th lap
Vaughn was using lap traffic to mix it up with Purkey. Randy Reynolds
followed by Kevin Kaiser were the blockers then Purkey. Bodenhamer was having
to deal with Dale Eaton and Barker was marking time with Lyle Webb and Jones
to follow.
The first caution came out with the steering broke on the #63 of Dale Eaton on
lap 16. On the restart once more Vaughn pulled Purkey Bodenhamer buy CJ Lyle
managed to get the jump on David Barker. CJ Lyle began his move on Bodenhamer
and as they came down for the 18th lap it was Lyle in 3rd once more Bodenhamer
got around Lyle for the 19th lap and these two continued to swap 3rd and 4th
at the half way mark of the 40 lap feature it was Lyle back in 3rd. As Alan
Vaughn completed the 23 lap
Al Purkey found himself once more with a mechanical problem, bringing out the
yellow flag with a broken spindle. This would move CJ Lyle up to second for
the restart only this time
Vaughn chose the inside line. As the two crossed the flag for the 25 lap it
was Vaughn Lyle and Bodenhamer followed by Barker, and Jones. Larry Jones who
is from Eldorado Springs
had not run with the MLRA racers this season was really doing a great job.
With just ten laps to go Vaughn still had Lyle right behind him. Barker and
Bodenhamer were racy in all the corners. Jones continued to show the way to
Daniel Anders Sonny Findling Webb and Brett LaFollette were in front of Rookie
contender T.J.Kuykendall rounded out the top ten.
The third yellow would fly for Brian Allison but both Essary's would retire
Shane with no brakes and Leslie with a broken A Arm. On the 35th lap once more
it was Vaughn using the inside line on Lyle, Barker, Bodenhamer Jones, then
Findling, LaFollette, and the double zero of Chad Clark, Webb, Kuykendall
still holding on to the tenth spot.
With four more laps to go the fourth yellow flew for Sonny Findling. Once
more using that inside line Vaughn took it to the checkers. C.J.Lyle had a
good night and David Barker would earn enough points to get around an absent
David Turner for 4th in the current point standings. Jason Bodenhamer finished
4th after almost flipping the night before at Bolivar and is still in the hunt
with just thirty points behind Alan Vaughn. Brett LaFollette managed a good
fifth place finish and Larry Jones just had a good night all the way around
with a third in his heat and a 6th in the feature.

In a phone call this morning from Al Purkey it was learned that the
weather once again is brewing up some big storms in Iowa.
"Check the weather channel and see what it's calling for?" "We're at
the Hotel on I-35 and it doesn't look good" stated Al Purkey this morning at
11a.m. "I sure don't want to have to drive East to Davenport to watch it
rain, I've got a ton of work to do at the shop" Purkey concluded.
"Last night it was a run from 16th starting spot to 4th for us in the
make up race." Purkey stated "The track began to take rubber and by the time
the second feature was ready to go we were starting in 5th and held on to 4th
at the end." "John Anderson had his hands full with Berck. First a slide job
(by Berck). John was getting loose then Berck did a bonzi and tore up Johns
car, I was just sitting and watching it happen in front of me" Purkey
concluded.

Friday night Aug.13
Valley Speedway Grain Valley
MO
O’Reilly MLRA (Race Results
and Story)
The O’Reilly MLRA had one of
their shortest trips down I-70 to the new Valley Speedway in Grain Valley
Missouri. Owner operator Mark Evinger and his staff have built a new clay
oval. Brand new aluminum grandstands, portable toilets that were new and clean
(at the start of the race) and a smattering of mobile concession stands what
more could a race fan ask for?
Mark Evinger and his E & E
Excavating Construction Company have fought spring rains and floods working to
build this diamond in the rough track. Railroad tracks follow the back of the
Grandstands but do not hamper the comings and goings of the Racers or Fans. The
pit area was cleared of all the tall timber and leveled for the racecar haulers
with enough room to maneuver for pull in parking with room for growth.
Evinger’s on their way to fine tuning the new facility. “We have some up and
coming hurdles with the City
but we do believe that we can
get both the noise and the time down to 3 hours of racing, tonight the MLRA Cars
are quieter than those that we normally run so we will most likely have to go to
mufflers next season. As for the shows we know we have to tighten them up as
the fans are not wanting to come and stay for a marathon” Evinger stated.
The Kansas City weather has
just not cooperated this season
this week alone the lows were
in the 50’s and the highs were
in the 70’s so they have had
to run the track dry from it’s heavy start.
Who’s Mark Evinger? Is he
just another race track owner? Not hardly, he’s a fan of the sport, and he’s
racer as well. “We’ve raced on and off for several years, but business always
came first.” In fact Mark’s 20 year old Son Owen runs the #18 Limited Latemodel
and with its’ steel wheels, steel heads and dry sump motor was helping to iron
in the track and ran a few laps of practice with the MLRA tonight. “We told our
Limited Class they could run with MLRA and looks like we have about 3 or 4 cars
here” stated
Evinger.
Heat 1
One of those Limited Lates was
the 22C of Kevin Coye the reining Central Missouri State Champion at
Warrensburg, Missouri. He drew the front row of the first heat along side
another new comer to the MLRA #7J Jake Morris. At the drop of the Green flag it
was Coyne, Morris and David Barker
to cross the line on the first
lap, David Barker was in the lead with Morris in second followed by Coyne Rusty
Dukes and Iowa’s Gary Webb. Randy Reynolds Charlie Benedict and Al Purkey all
trailed. Just before the half-way mark of the twelve lap heat, Barker had
pulled a good lead on Rusty Dukes and Gary Webb. Purkey had moved into fourth.
Coming out of turn two the action got heated with a bump and run between Dukes
and Webb allowing Purkey to get around Webb. Something mechanical happened as
Webb and the 55 of Randy Reynolds got together next causing a yellow. Webb went
to the pits Reynolds to the end of the line. At the finish it was Barker,
Purkey, Dukes Reynolds, Coyne, Morris and Benedict.
Heat 2
Every association has a driver
that just needs to find his place and gain that confidence with his equipment
and ability. Perhaps the MLRA Racer that has shined the most
in gaining experience with
laps has got to be St. Joe’s Dale Eaton. In this reporter eye Eaton has been
good but it’s been long in coming – tonight he was big time great! Starting on
the front row with Randy McGraw another local Missouri Racer who doesn’t get to
travel that much due to work sat side by side for the first twelve corners. As
Eaton
pulled ahead on the heavy
track Scott Drake another who fancies himself as a heavy track driver got
around McGraw. At the half way point Drake was looking and made
his presents known. Eaton
did a super job of holding him off as they came out of turn two which would
continue to be the hot action turn, Drake took a look, and Eaton eased the
throttle to take his first MLRA Heat win. McGraw followed by Aaron Seabaugh,
Larry Clawson Chad Clark Herb Nagy and Kevin Kaiser brought the field to the
Checkered flag.
Heat 3
Former MLRA Champion Terry
Phillips lined up on the front row for the third heat with Kerry Schulz
alongside. Second row was David Turner making his return after last weeks crash
that took the life of his 25th Anniversary Rocket! Turner escaped
the fire and destruction of the car at McCool Nebraska and rolled out a three
year old car that had been set up for his Son Aaron to try his hand at Late
Model Racing. “Aaron has a lot of things on his plate right now” stated
Turner. As many remember Tuner raced at Dodge City and drove back to Creighton
Missouri for Aaron’s wedding to Savannah in June. Turner picked up the story
with “the car had been sitting in the garage so (Scott) Bailey picked it up on
Monday and began a months worth of work in 4 days to get it ready for tonight”
Turner concluded.
At the drop of the Green
Phillips took his GRT to the front but coming out of two Turner had passed
Schulz and on the top in four he got by Phillips. Chad Lyle was right behind
and watching the line that Turner had established as he went with him around
Schulz by the fourth lap Lyle was around Phillips and sitting in the rocking
chair behind Turner. By the end of the fifth lap, Phillips had slowed and
pulled to the pits. Perhaps something had broken. Turner continued his line
with Lyle, edge up closer and making his move on lap 9 coming out of 3. At the
checkered flag it was
Lyle, Turner, Jason Bodenhamer
in third Schulz, followed by Shane Essary, Brett LaFollette and the 4J of Virgil
Jeffery.
Heat 4
The fourth and final heat saw
Missouri veteran short track racer Bob Fennewald and Gary Billings line up on
the front row. 2003 O’Reilly MLRA Champion Alan Vaughn and Bryon Allison shared
the second row. The 77w Dean Wray and Joe Walkenhorst shared the third while
Rookie contender T.J. Kuykendall sat alone in the fourth as they readied for the
go.
This would prove to be a great
race as both Bob Fennewald and Alan Vaughn have raced together all-over the
Missouri Short Tracks and knew what to be expected of both. Fennewald was not
going to lay down to Vaughn who is currently in the number one position in
O’Reilly MLRA Points and looking for his fourth Championship title. The pair
ran side by side for twenty six corners swapping high and low. As they came down
for the tenth lap Fennwald was still in the lead but Vaughn was working him and
finally got by after they took the white flag. Vaughn hung on for the Checkered
with Fennewald, and Wray. Allison finished fourth followed by Walkenhorst,
Kuykendall and Billings.
After a lengthy intermission
on the track for E & E Excavating to come out and do some rolling on the track
to smooth some of the rough-spots it was time for the Consolation events.
1st B
Bryon Allison who’s 13 year
old daughter Brittany sang the National Anthem and may have just been what he
needed for luck as he lead wire to wire to take the win. Gary Webb the Master
of the Dirt started the B from the fourth row, next to Terry Phillips with both
drivers having mechanical woes in their heat races. Racing would sure to be
hard fast and furious at the end of this Semi for the transfer spots.
As the cars shook-out from the
wild finish it was Webb taking second, Kuykendall third, Phillips Wray and Clark
followed by Walkenhorst and
Nagy who went out on the 7th lap.
2nd B
North Kansas City body-man
Larry Clawson took the win after leading all twelve laps in the second semi and
Brett LaFollette moved up from fourth to finish 2nd with Kevin Coyne
holding his own in the Limited Latemodel for third. Gary Billings, and Jake
Morris were on the lead lap finishing fourth and fifth. Kevin Kaiser and Charlie
Benedict down a lap finishing six and seventh.
Feature Event
The O’Reilly MLRA prides it
self on the diversity of both the competitors and the venues at which they race.
“This week’s show continues to display our drivers diversity in adapting to new
tracks, different weather conditions and new surroundings, not to mention the
six or seven new drivers that are here tonight to compete with our regular
drivers” stated Harriett Chancellor Race Director for the O’Reilly’s MLRA.
Using the MLRA Passing Point
system to line the drivers up for the Main event had Chad Lyle on the front row
with former Champion Al Purkey. Second row starter David Barker lined up with
fellow friend and Racer Alan Vaughn these two have enjoyed racing together for
years. Third row brought the St. Joe stand-out Dale Eaton as he advanced to the
feature on his own merits forgoing a Provisional starting spot that MLRA Racers
can use when they have either mechanical or racing difficulties during a given
night. Along side Dale was the “heavy specialist” Scott Drake one of those you
certainly do not count out until the Checkered flag has flown. David Turner and
long time fellow Missouri driver Bob Fennewald made up the fifth row. Dean Wray
and Randy McGraw were next followed by Aaron Seabaugh and Shane Essary. The
eight row saw Randy Reynolds line up with #1$ Kerry Schulz following them would
be another #1 Bryon Allison as he shared the row with Larry Clawson. Gary Webb
and Bret LaFollette made up the tenth row and T.J. Kuykendall and Herb Nagy the
eleventh and the final row going to Kevin Coyne and Virgil Jeffery for a
twenty-four car field going for 40 laps.
Taking the lead as they
crossed the starting line for the first lap was Al Purkey with Chad Lyle right
behind him. Barker and Vaughn, Eaton and Drake were right behind real close for
that first lap. Coming out of 2 Purkey continued to lead Lyle however when
they crossed the line after the second lap it was all Lyle needed to see where
he could run and passed Purkey for the lead on the third lap. Lyle held the
line Purkey following and watching to the point where you had to wonder if it
was on purpose? Meanwhile Vaughn had gotten past Barker and was gaining on the
pack by lap six. David Turner popped a tire and that brought out the yellow on
lap 7 at the restart once more Lyle lead Purkey and Vaughn. Drake had discarded
Barker for fourth. Jason Bodenhamer had been busy as he got by Dale Eaton then
Barker, falling in behind Drake on lap 8. They continued to stay pat as
Fennewald and McGraw had pulled in earlier. As they began to get into lapped
traffic by lap 11 Lyle and Purkey were using it to their advantage to separate
Vaughn with the 22 of Coyne. On lap 12 Shane Essary headed to the pits after a
good showing with a broken birdcage. Reynolds became the next lapped car to keep
Lyle from Purkey’s sights as the yellow came out for Essary. The restart on 13
and the pack was good and tight going into one. At the other end of the train
the yellow was waving for Larry Clawson. Once more at the green it was Lyle
Purkey and Drake with Vaughn sitting in the cat-bird seat. Aaron Seabaugh was
doing some passing as he began his charge from 9th on lap 13 to his
sixth place spot by lap 17. At the half-way mark it was still Lyle, Purkey and
Drake followed by Vaughn, Bodenhamer and Seabaugh. With the yellow coming out
for Herb Nagy in the 28, then it was Barker, Wray, LaFollette, Webb, Eaton and
Clawson. After the restart the field was bunched up and Vaughn chose his timing
just right to get by Drake for third on lap 22. Just as Lyle was coming out of
2 Purkey got around him “Lyle was really running good in 3 & 4 and I was working
real good in 1 & 2” Purkey stated after the race. As they came down for the 23
lap it was Purkey, Lyle, Vaughn and Drake with Seabaugh getting around
Bodenhamer and Barker going with him. Jason looked to be having a tire issue.
Purkey would hold the lead until Vaughn passed him on lap 26. Lyle
was right behind in third
watching for a break. On Lap 29 they started back through lapped traffic this
time Randy Reynolds was between Purkey and Lyle with Drake looking to make a
move. Bodenhammer got around Barker for sixth.
Vaughn caught the lap car of
Coyne leaving Purkey to deal with him and once more the leaders shuffled the lap
cars through the pack. Fast racing action but it would be Green all the way.
Scott Drake saw his chance to use the lap cars and did so on the 34th
lap to get by Lyle but once more he had two in front of him before he could get
to Purkey. On lap 37 Purkey knew he had to make it happen he went to the outside
and got a run as they crossed the starting line for the 38 circuit he got ahead
of Vaughn and used the lap car of Virgil Jeffery as a shield between he and
Vaughn – Vaughn wasn’t having any of this and got by him for a clear shot on lap
39 but again Purkey held his line and as they crossed the line for the white
flag it was Purkey ahead of Vaughn. At the Checkered flag it was Al Purkey for
the win, followed by Alan Vaughn, Scott Drake and Chad Lyle. Jason Bodenhamer,
Gary Webb, Aaron Seabaugh, David Barker and Dale Eaton rounding out the top ten
positions.
After the race Mark Evinger
made the remark that the O’Reilly MLRA had put on a good show for his 4,000 plus
fans and he was sure they’d be back.

Where's Al Purkey???
In what was to be a simple jump on an airplane and give a guy a
hand......turned out to be a money making
program..........
Al Purkey had called
Jason Bodenhamer late into the night-early Saturday AM to find out how the
MLRA Races were at Pleasanton KS
and made no mention of
the possibility of driving........... So Sunday AM
when I got this email
from Scott Daloisio the Track PR/Announcer about Al
Winning it was a big
surprise. (Read the story below)....
Perris driver came, saw
and conquered
01:06 AM PDT on Sunday,
July 11, 2004
By JIM SHORT / The Press-Enterprise
PERRIS - Al Purkey got his first look at
Perris Auto Speedway on Saturday afternoon and his first win there Saturday
night.
Purkey, a dirt track veteran from Coffeyville, Kan., made the trip at the
behest of Art Peterson of Cathedral City to help Peterson and Mark Anderson of
Sky Valley with their chassis setups for the Extreme Truck races at the
half-mile clay oval.
Purkey didn't know he'd be driving until he got to the track. But after a few
warm-up laps in Anderson's truck he pronounced Perris "just another race track,"
and a couple of hours later proved himself a quick study by going from last to
first in the 20-lap main event to take the win over Mike Hixson of Murrieta and
Peterson.
Purkey and Hixson waged a spirited and contact-free battle for three laps
before Purkey gained an advantage exiting Turn 4 on Lap 15.
"That was a lot of fun," Purkey said in the winner's circle. "The 41 car
(Hixson) was a good car and I wanted to get by him clean. I didn't want to come
out here and beat up on everyone. Art had a good car, too.
"I could turn and come down over the middle (of the turns) a little better
than they could."
A few minutes after Purkey had started last and won, Tim Shadduck of Hemet
did the same thing in the 20-lap Street Stock main. Shadduck got by early leader
Don Zoll Jr. of Moreno Valley at the halfway point, then opened a comfortable
advantage and beat Joe Falduto of Santa Ana and Kevin Busher of Hemet to the
finish.
That race had begun with just seven points separating the top four in the
standings. But pre-race leader Chuck Ribbe of Ontario was unable to start the
main after his car was heavily damaged in an eight-lap heat race and Falduto,
who was third in the standings, was disqualified for failing to pass post-race
inspection.
Those events left sixth-place finisher Don Zoll of Moreno Valley the
unofficial leader, bysix points over eighth-place finisher Carl Rozatti of Buena
Park. Dale Smith of Hemet, who finished fifth, moved from fifth to third in the
standings.

Jason Bodenhamer in the Chris Hitchock Motorsports, Buzzard Racing
Engine, GRT with the Bodees Bodies, Brookside Lawn Care, Cannon Electric,
Lindsey Transmissions, Charley's Race Decals, Real Wheels-Sunoco Fuel started
on the second row of the 22 car field going for 40 laps during the running of
the A Feature. Through two caution flags -- a flat tire and a handful of
lapped traffic, Jason Bodenhamer was able to fly to another win with the
O'Reilly MLRA Super Latemodels on the 2004 Thunder Tour Friday night at Linn
County's Tornado Alley.
Promoter Tim Schreckler was beginning to think the black clouds in
Kansas were becoming a fixture at Tornado Alley. During the pre-race live
Radio broadcast with Butler, MO Radio personalities but Cowboy Chancellor of
MLRA and the Promoter talked about the luck of the weather.
As the O'Reilly MLRA Super Latemodels began filling the Pits some if
not most of these competitors had high hopes of doing well in front of local
home town fans as they have all had their share of rained out events in that
last couple of months. As word came in that Gary Webb and Tommy Elston of
Iowa along with Ace Ihm of Hazle Green Wisconsin were on their way since
the WDRL event scheduled for Nebraska had been rained out early enough to make
the trip - fans began playing the guess who's coming to the races game. At
the close of the Draw, a lite field of cars had signed in. Some speculating
that costs and time to get from Race A to Race B may have been the big
winner. Both the Promoter and the O'Reilly MLRA had advertised the race with
flyers and hand-outs to drivers as well as using Radio Ads as far away as
Joplin, MO.
Heat Race Action.....
Heat Race # 1
Blue Grass Iowa's Gary Webb came from the second row and crossed the
starting line first on the first lap to take it to the Checkers while Rusty
Skaggs held on for second leaving Randy Reynolds and Herb Nagy Gary Billings
and Michael Dunn to round out the ten lap heat race.
Heat Race # 2
Freeman MO's Aaron Seabaugh and Jason Bodenhamer set the first row in
the second heat, and on the drop of the green it was Bodenhamer in the lead
followed by Seabaugh David Turner and Matt Furman. Turner took over the 2nd
spot coming down for lap three leaving Seabaugh and Furman to battle while
Brett LaFolllette and Larry Clawson round out the mix. As they came to the
checkered flag it was Bodenhamer, Turner, Furman Clawson able to get around
Seabaugh and La Follette crossing the line for the finish.
Heat Race #3
St. Joe's Dale Eaton would line up on the front row with '04 Rookie
contender T.J. Kuykendall. Once more at the drop of Starter Mike's flag it was
Eaton in the lead followed by Kuykendall, another Iowa racer Tommy Elston
made the long haul next was Kerry Schultz and Charley Reed. The yellow was
displayed with Reed going to the pits and Eaton to the tail on the 5th lap.
T.J. Kuykendall was able to hold off the moves of Elston and Schultz to take
the win.
Heat Race #4
Hazel Green Wisconsin's Ace Ihm started on the front row and jumped
to the lead with Alan Vaughn close behind until crossing the line on lap eight
Vaughn used the bottom to get by for the lead. Larry Clawson was in third
followed by Bob Fennewald and Kenny Shaw.
Main Event Notes.........
Belton Missouri's Alan Vaughn jumped to the lead on Gary Webb with
Jason Bodenhamer, TJ Kuykendall and David Turner in fifth at the end of the
first lap.
By the 6th lap Vaughn had lapped into traffic. 2nd was Webb and
Bodenhamer was still third with Turner up to fourth. Action really began to
heat up as Vaughn continued to lap higher in the lapped field of cars and on
the eighteenth lap Vaughn and a slew of others found themselves going to the
back when the yellow flag came out. Taking the lead on lap 19 was David Turner
followed by Tommy Elston Matt Furman David Barker Kerry Schultz Ace Ihm and
Rusty Skaggs then to follow were the cars involved. Turner found action on
the top as he pulled Elston for the three laps then with a fuel problem
dropped back in the field after the 25th lap. Tommy Elston may not be a name
your to familiar with but let me tell you this young man from Keokuk, IA is
really having a good year - earlier this week he had a win then coming to his
second MLRA event he's really having a good showing.
Elston takes over the lead on lap on lap 22 and continues while fellow
northerner
Matt Furman reels into the second spot on lap 32 with Ace Ihm Bob
Fennewald Alan Vaughn and Joe Nagy in tow. On the 36th lap Vaughn has gotten
around Ihm as Furman is closing in on lapped traffic when the yellow comes
out. "I knew I was in 5th place on lap 37 and I drove off the top and on lap
38 I got by Elston" stated Bodenhamer on Saturday morning while driving to his
Bodee's Race Fab Shop for a day of work. "It was a win it or wear it move but
I was pretty sure we could get it done" Bodenhamer concluded. Taking the lead
for the ones that counted the White Flag and the Checkered. Elston was second
with Rusty Skaggs turning in a great performance followed by Kerry Schultz.
Alan Vaughn, Aaron Seabaugh, David Turner, Ace Ihm, Gary Webb and Matt Furman
rounded out the top 10 finishers. (see below for results of finish)

O'Reilly MLRA Super Latemodels
Winston Speedway, Winston, Mo.
Green White & Checkers after 40
laps it was Jason Bodenhamer in the Winners Circle at the O'Reilly MLRA Super
Latemodels at Winston Speedway, Winston MO
Jason Bodenhamer aboard the Chris
Hitchock Motorsports GRT/Buzzard Engines Cannon Electric/Lindsey
Transmissions/Brookside Lawn Care/Charleas Race Decals and Bodees Bodies Racer
took his third
career win with the O'Reilly MLRA Super Latemodels tonight. "When you haven't
been to the Winners Circle for a while you really need to be sure and thank
all the people that have helped you get here" stated Bodenhamer as he
continued to thank his sponsors. Bodenhamer's night started out with a six
place starting position in his heat race and using the passing points to his
advantage he managed to gain the overall "high-point" starting spot by winning
his Heat. But even at that it was close racing amoung the passing points with
Alan Vaughn starting 7th and finishing 2nd in the same heat race.
As the Main Event rolled around it was a
late night of good racing. Winston Speedway had all their regular Classes, and
at a few minutes to Midnight they were underway with drivers introductions.
At the drop of the Green it was Bodenhamer off the point into the lead. "The
track was pretty racey, you could run in the middle or on the bottom," said
Bodenhamer. "We got into lapped traffic on the fifth or sixth lap and I would
wait for them to push off the corner. My car was really good." By
the 18th lap he was all the way up to 9th in lapped traffic on the 3/8's semi
banked bowl. Al Purkey and Alan Vaughn raced equally as hard coming thru the
lap traffic.

Hello Friends:
It is with a heavy heart that I write to you
tonight. On
June 11, 2004 the Auto Racing Community lost a
very dear
friend in former Race Promoter, Race Track Owner,
and Ambassador to Racing Larry Kaster.
I don't claim to have known him well, but when
you honor him by reading this obituary listed below you will understand how
he's touched so many in our Racing World.
How do you measure a man's worth? Perhaps, its
best to say
by the friends he's made along the way. Larry
Kaster along with his beloved wife Dixie have been life-long partners in the
Midwest Racing community.
Please join me in this time of reflection, not in
sorrow, but in the joy of knowing what a good man he was to so many.
Rest in Peace.

The rained out feature from Adams County Speedway

17th. The make-up feature will be followed by a complete
new WDRL show along with an O'Reilly pro street special. So we

This will be an awesome show. Two 50 lap features in one night,
for $5,000 each. |
My reply to:

Alphabet Soup
Classic
This race
report written with the notes of:
Tom Lathen,
Phil Roberts, and Pattie Frost
(Greenwood, NE) --
Southwest Iowa driver John Hampel had his biggest racing payday ever Sunday
night in winning the Alphabet Soup Classic here at Nebraska Raceway Park. The
race which featurered drivers from the WDRL, NCRA and O'Reilly MLRA racing
groups.
Hampel, of Nodaway, Iowa, led from flag to flag in the 50-lap Classic and
earned $5,000 for his efforts.
"I've wanted one of these races for so long, I can't believe it," said a
jubilant, smiling Hampel in Victory Lane. All I've ever wanted to do is win a
big race."
Of his crew, he said, "These guys have been working their rear ends off making
this car right. It doesn't matter how bad we do, they just work harder -- my
mom, my dad, my wife, my crew, Grove Automotive, MasterSbilt. This is what
I've wanted for longer than you can believe!"
After a win in the fourth PolyDome Qualifier and a start-to-finish victory in
the Iowa-Illinois Taylor Insulation Pole Dash, Hampel started the 50-lap
Alphabet Soup Classic on the pole and raced wheel to wheel with outside front
row starter Chris Spieker through turns one and two on the opening circuit
before powering into the lead as the pair headed down the back straightaway.
The 22-year racing veteran stretched his advantage to more than a dozen car
lengths before Al Humphrey spun in turn four on lap 11, leaving Solon Springs,
Wis., driver Brady Smith nowhere to go, bringing out the first of what would
be three caution flags during the event.
Ed Kosiski's Dodge Motorsports entry slowed with mechanical problems on lap
24, bringing out a second caution flag, and a pair of laps later, debris in
turn three necessitated the third race stoppage. But Hampel was undaunted,
roaring to sizeable leads when racing resumed.
At the line, Hampel's McCarthy's One-Hour Heating & Air Conditioning entry
held nearly a full straightaway advantage over former threee time O'Reilly
MLRA Champion, Al Purkey of Coffeyville Kansas. Purkey and his Larry
Shaw-Hatfield Racing Engine came from a ninth starting position to finish
second.
Spieker outdistanced current O'Reilly MLRA Champions Alan Vaughn of Belton
MO in his Rocket by Shaw-Smitty's Race Engine ride to grab third, just ahead
of Steve Kosiski, who battled from an outside ninth row start to grab fifth.
"I had an awesome race car, but I'll tell you what, it isn't over 'til it's
over," said Hampel. "As far as racing goes, this is the best day I have ever
had."
A field of 73 cars and a near-capacity crowd were on hand for the annual
Memorial Day weekend event in spite of less-than-ideal weather conditions.
The new track owners of
Kosiski Bros. (Joe, Steve and Ed) along with Mike Merrill and Jon Schwartz
were please to say the least.
"We've promoted other Race
Events" stated Joe Kosiski of the Racing Brothers, "but this was the best
crowd we've ever seen at NRP and we're looking forward to making this a great
annual event".
The Midwest Latemodel Racing
Association of Buckner Missouri once again had 20 of their top notched drivers
on hand to compete in the Alphabet Soup Classic.
The O'Reilly MLRA current and
three time Champion Alan Vaughn was the high-point (passing points) scorer
with 67.32. Al Purkey and David Turner were one and two from the their Heat
Race going into the seated field.
The O'Reilly MLRA hard-luck
award for the race had to go to Kerry Schultz aboard the S & S Racing
GRT-Racetek Racing Engines of Moundville Missouri as he managed to have
mechanical problems during the early evening hot-laps which had them loaded up
and on their way back to Missouri to ready for the next show.

O'Reilly MLRA
Series
Super Dirt Latemodels
Adrian Speedway, Adrian, Mo.
Alan Vaughn of
Belton, MO reigning three time O'Reilly MLRA Champion chalks another record
win at Adrian Speedway. Omaha's John Anderson was a very close second
followed by Jason Bodenhamer of Centerview, MO.
They say you
can never go home-but perhaps that's just what Alan Vaughn of near by Belton,
MO needed tonight. A bit of closure on matters of the heart. As he wheeled
his truck and trailer into Glenn and Colleen Portzen's Adrian Speedway you
just had a feeling that this was an important step to reach out to his beloved
Father Jack Vaughn. You see last fall when the MLRA group was here Alan had
just come from the Funeral Services for his best-friend. It's been a long
winter, one that would have found both he and his Dad working side by side.
Vaughn has
found very
little comfort in the tasks of working without his partner.
Tonight it was
for his Dad but more importantly to show his Dad he could do it -- bring back
that winning style. Taking the Heat race was a start, and it wasn't a gimmie
over C.J. Lyle and arch rival fellow respected driver Jason Bodenhamer.
As they lined
up for the feature Vaughn found himself mired back in the fourth row -- a
quirk that when you win you don't get those dreaded passing points to take you
to the front. Passing points always gives the Fans what they came for --
entertainment from the drop of the Green Flag.
Heat Race
Notes:
With Adrian
Missouri's newest resident David Turner taking the win last week over Jason
Bodenhamer you just knew that they'd have the edge for tonight's race. "In
the Heat we drew last row inside" stated Turner
as he recapped
the night's event. "Bailey builds a strong motor and we knew if we played are
cards right we'd have a chance to take the Rocket to the font" Turner
concluded. With the Heat win behind him over Rookie contender Randy Timms
and David Barker the Adrian Bank crew began prepping for the Feature.
Bodenhamer
wasn't as lucky. The Bodees Race Bodies Buzzard Racing Engines GRT found a
bit of a mechanical hiccup in his heat race which pitted him outside front row
long side Alan Vaughn. At the end of the Heat which found the new expectant
Father, Bodenhamer in third behind Vaughn and CJ Lyle a belt had to be
replaced.
John Anderson
drove down from Omaha to race the 1K Larry Moring Motorsports Rocket with it's
Hatfield prepared motor after competing
at the World of
Outlaw Latemodels event in Eagle, NE on Friday night.
At Eagle John
took his THT Designs, Jim Leonaard Plumbing MarCorp Electric Creative Memories
by Lisa race to a thirteen starting spot out of the 38 "Outlaws" - not racing
with this bunch on a weekly basis really adds to the drama of using the
correct setups - missing the combination on tires turned out to be critical
and found John running in the Consi. After making it to the Feature thru the
Consi where he ran a strong 4th
he was mired
back in the 20th starting spot at the end of the 60 laps John held his own
despite having left front brake problems finishing 17 in the $10,000 to win
event. Anderson hoped that tonight he could get back to the way the season
began -- and he did continuing his streak of (7) top 5 finishes for the year.
After taking the lead from his pole starting position in the heat - Anderson
pulled away from Freeman MO's Aaron Seabaugh and Iowa's Gary Webb.
Butler
Missouri's Bob Fennewald in the Jack Fennewald Auction Services Fennewald
Construction Brownsberger Heating and Cooling MO-Kan Livestock Market
Prices-Rite Lumber rig started out on the pole and was able to continue the
move to the checkers as Caney, KS's #99 Gary Gorby took his G & G Dozer Shaw
car from its third row starting spot to finish second while TJ Kuykendall and
his Warsaw Building Center True Value Racing Buzzard Racing Engines Bodee's
Race Bodies pulled to a good third spot.
The B Main with
1 to 4 going to the A
Dale Eaton just
back from the Donnie Moran Chassis and Driving School found lots to be changed
on the setup of his Racemart Z-4 towed down from St.Joe, Missouri to
take the win aboard the Pickup & Racehaven Riverside Market Collison Repair
XPress Mechanical Services BP Petroleum. Finishing second was Archie
Missouri's Charley Reed aboard the Kusgen, GT Quality Used Cars, and Carl E.
Osborn Bulldozing red number R15 while Barney Bauerenfeind of Adrian and
Bartlettsville, OK's Terry Melton rounded out the transferring spots.
The Feature
Main Event of 40 laps on what is effectionatly known as the "Bristol of the
Midwest" with its short track vengence found that the Promoter and
Groomsmaster Glen Portzen had worked his magic as nearly 3" of rain had fallen
over the last several days. This track is rich with history as it was one of
two built some 25 years ago by Charlie LaFollette who also built Linn County
in Pleasanton, KS the bigger of the two. For the last 10 years Illonis
transplants the Portzen's have called
Adrian Missouri
home -- literally with their residence at the track above the Pit-Store. "A
labor of love and a good business" stated Glenn when referring to their
track. For he and the family it's 24 -7 and gettin' her ready for the next
week.
Starting from
the Pole by virtue of passing points saw David Turner in the Adrian Bank,
Rocket with it's Scott Bailey power plant line up with CJ Lyle of Shawnee,
KS in the Randy Spalding Excavting Jim Thompson Sodding Rymeg Development GRT.
Second row was Randy Timms of Oklahoma City aboard the Duralite Wheel, Air
Born Coatings Mastersbilt
Western Flyer
next up would be Gary Gorby followed by Anderson's 1K
and Fennewald's
number 91. On the fourth row inside it was Alan Vaughn opposite Aaron
Seabaugh from Freeman. Gentlemen Gary Webb
of Blue Grass
Iowa the Racer formerly known as 56W now just W who
with his years
of Championship titles has taught him to come prepared or go home early found
it a tough night on the 1/3 bullring. Webb aboard the GRT by Gary Webb Ross
Medical Supply of Moline IL, Jim's Cartage Service, Liftruck Service Co.Inc.,
Peoria Truck Wrecking,
Intermoal
Maintenance Rebuilders Inc., Real Wheel, Performance Bodies and Pro Power
Motor lined up on row five with Kansas City, KS second generation racer Brett
LaFollette in his Mastersbilt. TJ Kuykendall and Jason Bodenhamer were next
followed by David Barker in the Richards Printing, Barker Racing Inc. Rocket
along side of Harrisonville, Missouri's Herb Nagy. Nagy with it's newest
sponsor Hill Billy's Doins which are the makers of Fresh Fried Pork Rinds
along with his Joe's Tow out of Holden, MO with it's Mann's Speed of
Independence, MO powerplant and Team GRT Chassis found his hopes of a better
starting spot shot down in the heat race with the tight bullring action and no
passing points. Rounding out the last row of the feature were Kerry Schultz
of Moundville, MO in the S & S GRT and Ractek Motor sponsored by Adesa Auto
Auctions, www-pointcars-com along side Wilson Farms Angus Beef and Bogle
Plumbing Nevada, Missouri's Bobby Kerbs in a GRT with an "our-gang-motor."
At the drop of
the Green Flag it was CJ Lyle in the lead followed by David Turner until the
pack bunched up in turn four to bring out the start of the yellows at the fast
action 1/3 mile. On the restart once more Lyle dove to the lead Anderson was
behind Turner for third this time it wasn't good with several having to retire
to the pit area for a quick fix. Once more Lyle took the lead with Turner in
tow followed by Anderson and Alan Vaughn. Several more laps kept the
pack tight and racy then Vaughn got by Turner and you could tell Turner was
wrestling the car (later it was learned that he'd lost the power steering
totally) hold off Anderson Seabaugh and Nagy they continued. About the 11 or
12 Vaughn got by Lyle to take the lead one he'd hold till the checkers. With
about 15 laps to go Anderson was into second and began to chase down Vaughn.
Five laps from
the end saw the caution flag once more displayed and as
they came
around for the shake down it was Vaughn Anderson Bodenhamer Turner Webb. At
the finish it was Vaughn for the win aboard the Rocket by Shaw sponsored Sonny
Collison Center, Super Clean Plumbing and Drain Cleaning Helts Turf Farm, Hon
Heating and Cooling Smitty's Power Plant at his home town speedway. Followed
by Anderson, Bodenhamer, Turner, Webb, Fennewald, Schultz, Seabaugh,
LaFollette, and Eaton for the top 10.
After tonight's
races it's now Jason Bodenhamer taking the point lead with Alan Vaughn in
second.
