BILL MARIETTA RETIRES AS PROMOTER OF VCS

Bill Marietta has decided to make 2005 his final season at Vermilion County Speedway.  Bill plans to spend a great deal of his free time with his wife and family. “Working a race track was my second full time job; my family has always been behind me, now it is time that I support them.” Bill would like to thank his staff and all of the folks that have been involved with VCS over the years. “I couldn’t have done this without the help of all these folks; I appreciate all of their efforts.”

Bob Sargent will partner with Bill Nelson to promote the race track in 2006. Nelson the executive director of NALMS, and a Member of the Vermilion County Fair Board will handle the daily operation of the facility. Nelson states “I would like to thank Bill Marietta for all of his hard work over the years and especially the offer that help is only a phone call away. I am sure that I will be contacting him on a regular basis.

 VCS 2006

“The fans and race teams will like the changes and improvements we are planning for 2006. I grew up and have raised a daughter in Danville. The Fairgrounds and racetrack are important to me and I want to see racing continue at VCS. There is no doubt this will be a learning experience, our goal is to make VCS a race facility that is a favorite for race teams as well as fans” stated Nelson. A key to making improvements will be to listen to the race teams and fans and to do our best to focus our attention in that direction.  After listening to some racers and fans during breakfast at a local restaurant, Nelson plans to add a new class which could best be called Road Hogs, a pure stock American full size class. These cars will be a mid-entry level class that will be very popular for drivers that are looking for an affordable level of racing. “Hopefully the new class will not only recruit some new drivers, it will also bring back some drivers that were forced to leave the sport due to the high costs.” The biggest challenge will be creating enforceable rules that will allow the cars to be inspected easily and on a routine basis which assures a fair playing field. “Once we get the rules right it will be a great addition to our program.

NALMS Midwest Speedweek and Season Title Conclude This Weekend
Jeffrey A. Bayless

The Northern Allstar Late Model Series Midwest Speedweek originally slated to be run from August 10th to August 14th had the final two events rained out on the original dates.  Those races, the 75 lap $15,000 to win Kevin Roderick Memorial at Crown Point Speedway and the 30 lap Mike Steinwand Memorial paying $3500 to win at Vermillion County Speedway, are set to be run this weekend September 24th and 25th.   This weekend is of double importance because not only will the Midwest Speedweek Champion be crowned at the conclusion of the Mike Steinwald Memorial, that race will also conclude the 2005 Northern Allstar Late Model Series Midwest Thunder Tour and the season title champion will be crowned as well.

Both title hunts are still undecided as coming into Saturdays festivities at Crown Point Speedway Steve Barnett holds a 48 point margin on Steve Hillard in the season title chase and Dennis Erb Jr. holds a slim 6 point spread on Steve Hillard for the Midwest Speedweek Crown.   Expect some great racing action this weekend as both tracks are expecting good turn outs to settle these unsolved affairs.

Some of the drivers who are expected to compete at one or both of these events include Steve Barnett, Steve Hillard, Duane Chamberlain, Mike Mataragas, Jarryd Holshouser, Rohn Moon, Rodney Melvin, Randy Korte, Dennis Erb, Jr., Kevin Weaver, Brian Shirley, Patrick Sheltra, Wes Steidinger, Joe Harlan, Kyle Roderick, Frank Heckenast, Jr., Richie Hedrick, Eric Smith, Billy Drake, Roger Long, and Jason Feger.

In addition to the race winnings and the Midwest Speedweek point fund there will be contingencies awarded each night for the following (note; you must have the sponsors decal on your car to receive the award, decals are available in the NALMS trailer if you don't all ready have one):
K-Motion Feature winner receives $100.00 product certificate from K-motion
Petersen Aluminum Fast time will be awarded $50.00 cash.

The Moweaqua Missile Continues to Blast Through The Competition With His 6th Summer National Win in 10 Events
Jeffrey A. Bayless

Danville, IL (July 3)  Round 10 of DIRT Motorsports UMP Summer Nationals rolled into Vermillion County Speedway Sunday night with 35 entries on hand to give it a go at the $6000 top prize.  When the dust had settled it was Moweaqua. IL native "The Moweaqua Missile" Shannon Babb celebrating in front of a packed house standing beside his Jay Dickens powered CJ Rayburn race car.  Babb's sponsors include J&J Steel, Car City, G&C Enterprises, Platinum Motors, Watters Autoland, and Petroff Towing.

The first three rows of the 40 lap feature event were to be determined from the 9 car 9 lap dash comprised of the 7 quickest qualifiers, a Summer National point provisional, and an UMP National point provisional.  Jeep VanWormer led the pack into turns 1 and 2 from the pole position but it was Jimmy Mars setting the pace into 3 and 4 and went on to win convincingly by a straight away advantage over fast qualifier Shannon Babb, VanWormer, Randy Korte, Rodney Melvin, and Billy Drake who went from 8th to 6th on the last lap sneaking by the battling duo of Brian Shirley and Dennis Erb Jr.  12 more cars would transfer to the feature through the heats with 4 coming from each of the three heats.  Shirley stormed away from the pack to win by 10 car lengths over a 3 car battle for 2nd with 6th starting Darren Miller, Duane Chamberlain, and Kevin Weaver coming home in that order.  Weaver had started 2nd, dropped back to 7th, and then fought his way back into contention to join the fracas for the runner-up position on the last 2 laps.  In the second heat Steve Hillard stormed from his second row starting position to lead the first three laps before pole sitter Erb powered back by to lead the rest of the way and grab the checkers 3 car lengths in front of Hillard.  John Gill and Dan Walden also transferred through this heat.  In the third and final heat Eric Smith jumped out front early and went on to lead the entire distance as Richie Hedrick, Terry English, and Cory Rolfe snagged the other transfer spots.  Two more cars would transfer through the last chance races with 1 coming from each and 2 provisionals would be added to complete the 22 car field.  Mark Voigt would lead flag to flag in the first conci with modified ace Denny Schwartz grabbing second on the last lap from Joe Harlan.  In the second conci, local racer Brian Clendenen would work his way through the field to grab the top spot on the last lap to grab the checkers after starting 6th.  Jason Feger would finish second ahead of Josh Ferguson.  Feger and Patrick Sheltra were awarded the provisionals.

VanWormer, Mars, and Babb would fly into the first set of turns 3 wide to start the main event with Babb coming out on top to lead the first lap with Mars, VanWormer, Korte, and Melvin following behind him.  Five laps in, Babb had opened a 5 car length lead over Mars who was desperately trying to hold Korte at bay as Korte had powered by VanWormer 2 laps earlier.  The battle for second raged 5 car lengths in front of 3 car duel for 4th as VanWormer, Erb, and Melvin were dicing it up for that position.  Babb would ride his mount to a straight away lead by the 1/2 way mark and was entering heavy lapped traffic when he caught a reprieve as Rolfe spun to a stop in turn 3 to bring out the races only caution.  However Babb would take back up where he left off powering back to a 5 car length lead on the restart as Korte was defending the runner-up spot from Mars who had just relinquished it to Korte a few laps before the caution.  Babb would reclaim his straight away lead by the 30th circuit but would see Korte cut it in half over the last few laps as Babb found himself tied up in slower cars on a track that was quickly becoming thought to pass on.  At the checkers it was Babb by 8 car lengths over Korte, Mars, Erb, Hedrick, Melvin, Hillard, VanWormer, Drake, and Shirley.

Round 11 of the touring series will be conducted at Fayette County Speedway outside of Brownstown, IL on our nations 219th birthday.

RACE NOTES
National UMP Modified point leader, Denny Schwartz, jumped behind the wheel of Roger Long's Pierce Chassis to try his hand at late model racing for the evening.  Schwartz would fail to make the show finishing 1 spot out of a transfer spot in both his heat and conci.  On the other hand, he did when his 8th consecutive modified feature at Vermillion County Speedway in other racing action.

Shannon Babb's 2005 Summer National hot streak may put him in the record books.  With 19 scheduled races remaining he has all ready reached the half way mark of 12 wins in one campaign set by Billy Moyer in 1999. Babb's current winning percentage sits 3rd all time at .600 with only Billy Moyer's 94 campaign (.692) and Scott Bloomquist's (.692) better than his current batting average.

Tonight Vermilion County Speedway hosted the Tri Track Challenge for UMP Late Models. Some of the best late model drivers in the Midwest were on hand for the $10,000.00 prize. A total of 23 Late Models were on hand. Not a huge number of cars but the quality of competition was outstanding.

The Packed house voted for a 50 Lap feature and in my opinion got to see one of the best features of the year. The crew at Vermilion County Speedway should be applauded for the fine racing surface this evening. The track was 2 and 3 lane all night.

The Moweaqua Missile Blasts By the Competition in the Tri-State Challenge Opener
Jeffrey A. Bayless

Danville, IL (June 3rd) Vermillion County Speedway outside of Danville, IL hosted the first leg of the Tri-State Challenge, a three race series that will take the competitors to 3 different tracks in 3 different states in a 3 night span,  on Friday night with a packed grandstands and an all-star cast of competitors in the pits.  When the 50 laps had been completed it was Moweaqua, IL native, Shannon Babb, hoisting the trophy beside his CJ Rayburn race car with a Jay Dickens power plant under the hood.  J&J Steel, Car City, G&C Enterprises, Platinum Motors, Watters Autoland, and Petroff Towing were among Babb's sponsors.

Twenty-three of the finest in the business checked in to try their hand at the $10,000 top prize only to see the field quickly whittled down to 22 when Don O'Neal broke a motor during the practice session and had to call it evening.  The 8 fastest qualifiers lined up for a 10 lap dash that would send 6 to the feature to make up the first three rows with their starting positions to be determined later by draw.  Brady Smith, Shannon Babb, and Dennis Erb went into the first set of turns in the dash three wide with Smith settling into the lead followed by Erb and then Babb.  Erb would make a challenge on the third lap but Smith was able to maintain the point but Erb made another attempt late and the duo took the white flag side by side.  Erb would power past coming out of 2 to take the win and Babb would try the same thing at the other end of the speed plant with Smith holding onto second by a nose at the stripe.  Jeep VanWormer, Darren Miller, and Brian Shirley would follow across the stripe.  In the first heat Roger Long would hold off several early challenges from Kevin Weaver before pulling away to a 5 car length lead at the stripe.  Jason Feger, Steve Barnett, and Josh Ferguson would round out the top 5.  In the second heat Michael Bradley would take the early lead and run a way with a convincing heat win ahead of Billy Faust, Rodney Melvin, Jimmy Mars, and Wendell Wallace.

Jeep VanWormer would take the early point in the main event followed by Darren Miller, Brady Smith, Shannon Babb, and Brian Shirley.  Shirley would begin fading backwards as Kevin Weaver powered from his 5th row starting spot into the top 5 on the second lap.  Meanwhile, it did not take long for the action to heat up at the front of the pack as Miller started putting the moves on VanWormer on the same lap and would grab the point 1 lap later.  As Miller settled into the front spot, VanWormer  would find his hands full with Babb who would wrestle the runner-up spot from him on the 7th circuit opening the door for Weaver who would prevail in the battle for third 2 laps later.   Back up front, the leader would find himself amidst slower traffic allowing Babb to close quickly and set the stage for a multi-lap side by side affair that would thrill the crowd.  Babb would work by to lead the 16th circuit, but the determined Miller would fight back to lead the next three laps before succumbing to Babb for good.  Once Babb had a firm hold on the top spot he would check out on the field lapping all but the 2nd-4th place machines before the race was done.  Miller would come home a solid second ahead of Weaver, Smith, VanWormer, Wallace, Long, Erb, Feger, and Shirley.  A smiling Babb said he had fun on the well prepared racing surface on his way to a lop sided victory and made note of the level of competition present for the first round of the 3 race challenge.  He also made mention of the notable absence of the always competitive and one of his biggest rivals O'Neal, saying it made his job easier and "that was once less guy I had to beat."  He then continued with a smile "I'm sure he will be back soon."  Babb now becomes eligible for the $10,000 bonus if he can win 1 of the remaining two events in the 3 track series.

The Tri-State Challenge now moves onto Kenny Schrader's facility, I-55 Speedway in Pevely, MO before heading to Haubstadt, IN and Tri-State Speedway to close out the mini-series.  Each race pays $10,000 to the winner and there is a $10,000 bonus for any driver who can pick off 2 of the 3 events.

Babb Rolls to 1st of Tri-Track Events.. Complete Results here

Shannon Babb of Mowequa, Illinois lived up to the moniker of the "Mowequa Missile" tonight as the late model contingent rolled into Vermilion County Speedway in Danville, Illinois for the first of three events billed as the TRI-TRACK Challenge. Three events in three states in three days all paying $10,000.00 to win. Babb is in line for a $10,000.00 bonus if he can now win one of the two remaining events. The tri-track challenge bonus, in its third year of existence was only paid once, in its freshman year when Babb dominated the series, winning all three events.

the trophy dash tonight was topped by Dennis Erb, Jr. ahead of Brady Smith, Babb, Jeep Van Wormer, Darren Miller, Brian Shirley, Billy Drake and Billy Faust.

The heat races were won by Roger Long over Kevin Weaver, Jason Feger, Steve Barnett, Josh Ferguson, Kyle Logue and Chuck Haga and Michael Bradley over Billy Faust, Rodney Melvin, Jimmy Mars, Wendell Wallace, Wes Steidinger, Shannon Reid and Corey Rolfe.

Prior to the start of tonights 50 lap A-Main event, the top 6 dash finishers drew frisbees for their starting positions in the feature event. When the green flag fell over the field it was Jeep Van Wormer and Darren Miller powering to the front swapping the lead before Miller would take the point through the first 15 markers. On lap 16 Babb took command from his 5th starting berth, Miller would volley back to the front to lead lap 17 with Babb moving back to the point on lap 20. Once Babb got to the front for good he would never be headed again in the next 30 laps and set a torrid pace as he worked lapped traffic and put all but 2-4th a lap in arrears.

Following Babb at the stripe were Miller, Weaver, Brady Smith, Mars, Van Wormer, Wallace, Long, Erb and Fegers filling out the top 10.

Babb is sponsored by C.J. Rayburn Race Cars, G&C Enterprises, WELD Wheels, Impact Safety Equipment, J&J Steel, Platinum Motors, CAR CITY, Watters Autoland, Allstar Performance, Wick Racing, Sunoco Race Fuels, Hoosier by Smash, Outlawd Motorsports, Petersen Systems and Petroff Towing.

Tomorrow night the traveling series will move on to Ken Schrader's I-55 Raceway in Pevely, MO. under the leadership of Ray Marlar and what is sure to be a very racy track condition.
