Hillard reigns supreme at Kankakee Valley

By Paul D. Bayne

KANKAKEE, Ill. – August 26  For the first time in 15 months, the Northern All Stars Late Model Series visited Kankakee Valley Motor Speedway, formerly known as just Kankakee Motor Speedway, and one driver so dominated the night that he’d wish the rest of the season were ran at the Osterhoff family run facility.

Steve Hillard of Sadorus, IL driving the Owens Stephens Racing/Masterbilt/Estes Racing Engines/Grand Prix had everything go his way Friday night as he cruised to an impressive runaway win to earn the $2,500 pay day in front of an enthusiastic crowd at the Kankakee County Fairgrounds complex.

Hillard began the 30-lap affair from the pole position and at the drop of David Whittington’s green flag, he was literally “off to the races”.  Dennis Erb Jr., a former Kankakee track champion, Jason Feger, Brian Shirley, the 2004 NALMS Champion & Rookie of the Year, and Richie Hedrick would all give chase, but the elusive Hillard kept increasing his lead to nearly a straight-away.

With ten laps in the books, it was all Hillard, and clearly unless a caution flag flew, for all intents and purposes the race was for second between Erb and Feger.  Feger closed the gap several times, reaching the back of Erb’s bumper numerous times, but never had enough to power past last year’s series runner-up.  Duane Chamberlain, Dick Potts, Wes Steidinger, Steve Barnett, and Ted Loomis completed the top ten with twenty laps remaining.

On lap 11, Hedrick's motor would go up in smoke as he exited turn four and was forced to retire from the event, the victim of a broken oil line.  That was the good news for Hedrick, as he had just completed installing a brand new Hedrick power plant prior to the event.  Apparently, no harm was done to the motor itself, just a man’s pride.

As the field hit the halfway mark it was still all Hillard, with Erb fending off the challenges of Feger, while Shirley was a distant fourth, and Chamberlain and Steidinger were locked in a duel for the fifth spot.  However, the man on the move was series point's leader and 5-time NALMS Champion Steve Barnett, who began the race from the sixteenth position, but because Kevin Weaver had problems even before the green flag fell, Barnett would move up one row to fourteenth.  Barnett was now riding in the seventh spot. Weaver was slated to start from the outside of row two, but was forced to drop out with mechanical trouble on the initial pace laps of the event.

On lap 17, Steidinger would wrestle the fifth spot away from Chamberlain, who now found himself defending the sixth position from Barnett as the two raced side by side down the backstretch.  Loomis, Potts, and Jayme Zidar would close out the top ten with just ten laps remaining.

With nine laps remaining Kankakee point's leader John Provenzano made an effort to work his way into the top ten past Zidar.  With six laps to go, R.J. Gall’s machine would smoke heavily as he entered turn three, but he safely pulled his car to the infield grass without incident.  One lap later Kerry Mathew would retire to the pits as well.

As the field circled the 1/3-mile clay oval for the final time and took the checkered flag, it was Hillard scoring an impressive flag-to-flag victory over Erb Jr., Feger, Shirley, and Barnett, as Loomis raced past Steidinger for sixth on the final lap, while Provenzano, Chamberlain, and Zidar rounded out the top ten.

With the win and subsequent fifth place finish by Barnett, Hillard was able to narrow the gap between himself and Barnett to 40 points with just five events remaining on the docket for 2005.

Several cars finished one lap in arrears including Dick Potts, Frank Heckenast Jr., Jarrod Holshauser, Mike Mataragus, and Dan Walden.  The race had no lead changes or cautions.

Steidinger set fast time on the evening among the 26 entries with a lap of 14.210 to earn the Peterson Aluminum Fast Time Award.  Barnett would earn the PPM Racing Products Hard Charger Award improving his position 11 spots on the grid.  See Contingency Awards below for more race product winners.

Josh Kohler Memorial; Indiana Super Streets Highlight June 24th Action at Kankakee Valley
Jeffrey A. Bayless

Kankakee, IL (June 21)  Due to other late model specials in the area, Kankakee Valley Motor Speedway has opted to not run Late Models in their June 24th program.  But don't let that keep you away as their will still be plenty of action in store at the Northern Illinois speed plant.

The Josh Kohler Memorial, a $1000 to win $75 to start street stock special, is on tap for the evening.  The $1000 top prize is sure to draw some extra hot shoes to compete with Kankakee regulars Jay Hamilton, Kevin Lenzen, Darrin Kohler, Steve Dimmick, Mike Cavanaugh, Don McCarty, and last weeks impressive feature winner Randy Akers.  The street stock class at Kankakee is always fun to watch, and this weeks race will be no exception.

The UMP Modifieds will run a regular program on the night.  The question on many fan's minds in the Modified class is can anyone unseat the winner of the last 3 main events, Dan Hamstra.  Hamstra got a late start on the year at Kankakee but has been on a tear for the past month.  The UMP Modified class features some of the best in the area, so Hamstra will have to work hard if he is to win the 4th consecutive feature Friday night.

Also in action Friday night, for the first time ever at Kankakee Valley Motor Speedway, will be the Indiana Super Streets.  This exciting class runs on Saturday night at Kamp Motor Speedway and Sunday night at Vermillion County Speedway, as well as several other facilities in the southern part of Indiana.  Several of these drivers are itching to try out the high banks of Kankakee so look for some exciting action from this class Friday night.

Dauber Wins Thriller in Kankakee Special Event
Jeffrey A. Bayless

Kankakee, IL (June 17) Kankakee Valley Motor Speedway went topless to kick off Father's Day weekend with a 40 lap $1700 to win UMP Late Model special event and kicking in $100 extra to any feature winner who went with the theme and took their roof off.  The unseasonably cool weather may have kept a few fans away, but for those who braved the elements an absolutely splendid night of action was in store.

The Late Model main event saw outside pole sitter, RJ Gall, storm to the early lead as Frank Heckenast Sr., and Russ Scheffler went door to door for second ahead of Ryan Dauber and Ted Loomis.  Gall steadily separated from the field as the 11th starting John Provenzano was working his way toward the front moving into the top 5 by the 6th lap.  By the 10th lap things were looking to settle in as Gall was sitting 10 car lengths out front of the field and beginning to put the back markers a lap down as Scheffler, Dauber, and Provenzano gave chase.  But a lap 16 caution began to set the stage for a race to remember.  On the restart, Gall once again set sail as Scheffler, Dauber, and Provenzano went three wide for the second spot with Jayme Zidar and Loomis trying to work their way into this heated dual.  As the race raged on, the battle for second settled into a two way affair between Provenzano and Scheffler while Dauber and Zidar were mixing it up for 4th a couple car lengths back while Gall was once again putting real estate between himself and these battles.  Provenzano would eventually clear himself of Scheffler and began to slowly reel in the leader, but with the laps winding down it looked as if he would need help to catch the speedy Gall.  That help came with 15 laps remaining as Bart Schwartz stalled in between turns 1 and 2 bringing out the caution with the running order being Gall, Provenzano, Scheffler, Zidar, and Dauber.  When the green was unfurled again, Gall took off with Provenzano glued to his tail, as Dauber moved to the extreme high groove in search of greener pastures.  What he found was an express lane to the front as he quickly dispatched Zidar and did the same to Scheffler 1 lap later.  With 10 laps to go Gall, Provenzano, and Dauber were all within a car length of each other as they separated from the field setting the stage for an amazing finish.  With 5 laps remaining, Provenzano began to peek under Gall creeping closer to making the pass with each set of turns.  All the while, Dauber, riding the rim, was inching in on this battle and with three to go it was a virtual pick-em as the battle for first was now a 3 wide battle with Provenzano on the hub, Gall in the middle, and Dauber on the rim.  When this trio took the white flag the distance between 1st and 3rd was literally inches as they roared down the front stretch wheel to wheel quickly closing in on the lapped car of Chuck Steele.  The lapped car would work to Dauber's advantage as it would slow up his competitors just enough to allow him to clear the battle going  down the back stretch and claim the victory a car length ahead of Provenzano who beat Gall to the stripe by half of a car.  Scheffler would claim fourth ahead of Zidar and Wes Steidinger who worked his way up from the rear after a lap two spin to claim 6th.  Loomis, Frankie Heckenast Jr., Bob Pohlman Jr., and Al Atkinson rounded out the top 10.  Dauber of Tonica, IL standing beside his Pro Power driven CJ Rayburn race car in victory lane stated "I was just laying back there watching Gall and Lil' John (Provenzano) racing each other and I just snuck in there."  Asked if he saw something that inspired him to move to the high side in the closing laps he responded with a laugh "No, it was more like a last ditch effort."  Dauber's sponsors include Dauber Company, Inc., Mid State Trucking, Besser Parts & Accesories, Edward Jones Investments, Impact Safety Equipment, Jeff's Enginemasters, AfterShock Graphics, and Race Art.  With the $100 dollar fast time award in addition to Jensen's Amoco sponsoring $100 to the feature winner and Route 66 Service Center of DeWitt sponsoring an additional $100 to the fast qualifier, Dauber walked away with a cool $2000 pay day with his efforts on the night.

The Modified feature began with Fair Oaks, IN native, Dan Hamstra, shaking off an early challenge from Jim Farris with Dave Porth in close pursuit.  These three competitors separated from the field as the battle for 4th was hot and heavy going three and four wide and involving up to 6 cars at any given moment.  But in the end nobody had anything for Hamstra as he drove his Hamstra Trucking, Indiana Stone Works sponsored Pierce Race Car to his third consecutive victory at Kankakee Valley Motor Speedway.  Farris, Porth, Matt Bachman, and 17th starting Bob Pohlman Jr. rounded out the top 5.  Hamstra earned the extra $100 for going topless and when asked if he was going to put the roof back on he said "Oh yeah, I think it looks ugly without it."

In Street Stock action Randy Akers had the field covered as he stormed away to a convincing flag to flag victory ahead of Steve Dimmick, Don McCartey, Darrin Kohler, and the roofless Jay Hamilton.

Next week at Kankakee Valley Motor Speedway the Street Stocks will compete in the Josh Kohler Memorial with a $1000 going to the winner.  Also in store will be the UMP Modifieds and for the first time ever at Kankakee the always exciting Indiana Super Streets will be in action.
