FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Marvel Captures KISS Championship While Jones Claims The Finale

July 3, 2005 -- The 2005 King of Indiana Sprint Series concluded with a popular new champion wearing the crown, a fast-rising star in victory lane and an exciting night filled with twists, turns and tumbles at the Terre Haute Action Track.  As the last checkered flag fell, Levi Jones claimed his first KISS series feature race victory and Justin Marvel earned the points and the title of sprint car King of Indiana.

After the race, Jones allowed that it was very important to him to get the KISS series win.  Especially here at Terre Haute, he added.  With a runner-up finished to Dave Darland in the first 05 KISS race, at Lincoln Park Speedway, Jones recorded a win and second place finishes in his only two series appearances.  Terre Haute has been good for Jones, as in addition to several top five finishes, Jones claimed last summers Indiana Sprint Week title at the Action Track.

Draw racing (no qualifying) can rack and stack heat races in odd ways, making it crucial for drivers to charge early and transfer into the main event as soon as possible.  This led to an incident that affected the point outcome as the cars crossed the starting line in the first heat.  Drawing tenth and last staring spot, point leader Dave Darland moved to the outside coming off turn four for the green, but Al Thomas pinched Darland into the outside wall and Jeff Walkers F-5 somersaulted down the front stretch.

While Kyle Wissmiller, Daron Clayton, Shane Cottle and Marvel claimed heat race wins, Walker was unloading a second sprint machine, the red Chalk chassis that Darland had driven the night before at Bloomington Speedway.  Following the last heat, Darland was push started and allowed the engine to warm, then lined up on the tail of the C-Main.  He won the C with a last turn pass of John Scott.  He didnt start last in the B-Main, but he had a dozen cars in front of him.  The popular Lincoln, Indiana racer had fans on their feet as he charged around both Jon Stanbrough and Casey Shuman through turn two and won that race.  Then Walker and Darland made one too many changes to the red machine, and the car was way too tight in the main event.  Even though he raced from 17th to 10th, Marvel was nearly a straightaway ahead of him at the finish.

Cottle led into the first turn of the 30-lap feature, but Critter Malone scrapped back on the inside grabbing the lead coming out of turn two.  Jonathan Vennard hustled from fifth to third, with Clayton, Jones and Mat Neely making up the top six on the first lap.  While Malone opened a gap of more than two seconds, Vennard passed Cottle and Marvel was holding his own in seventh.  After a dozen laps, Vennard, in Tom Millers 4m DRC, had cut Malones lead to just a half dozen car lengths, and at the halfway mark the leaders were nose-to-tail.

On the 21st circuit, Vennard looked under Malones TransCor Trucking/Sander Engineering DRC going into turn three, slipped back, and then pulled even as they exited turn four.  He outran Malone into the first turn, slicing to the inside and cleanly taking the lead.  Neely also got past but slid high in turn 3, and Jones hustled past him and Malone to claim second on the next circuit.  While Vennard quickly built 30 car lengths while the issue of the runner up spot was being contested, Jones, in Scot Benics Lucas Oil Maxim, was soon cutting into that advantage while working the cushion.

With just a handful of laps remaining, the race became a classic high-low battle, with Vennard working the bottom masterfully and Jones leveraging a lot of momentum around the top of both ends of the half-mile.  On the 27th circuit Jones run off turn two carried him even going into turn three.  Vennard narrowly held he lead at the flagstand, but Jones circled him cleanly through turn one and took command as they raced off two.  Vennard fought back, but ran just behind Jones bumper as they took the checkers.

The top just got better down in one and two, Jones reported after the victory photos.  I knew that I didnt want to show him the top to early so I kind of made it where I could get a run on him and pass him in two without getting beside him so that he wouldnt know that I was up there.

In the beginning I was behind some cars and I couldnt really see to run the top, so I ran the middle for awhile.  Then it got cleaned up enough where I could run the top.  Those guys were kind of committed to the bottom.  I just decided to live or die on the top and it all worked out.

The car was good.  The driver just didnt hear them quick enough, Vennard explained as he changed into his street clothes after the race.  Levi played me just like he needed to keep me from moving up into the rubber.  When he did, he passed me and I got a run on him and stuck right on his bumper, but it was too late.  We let him go buy and werent able to get a run on him.  We were still good.  It was just the benefit of being back there and seeing what lines were good and not being out front and running around the bottom the whole race.  Oh well.

The new KISS champion wore a crown and posed with the crystal bowl.  He came into the night just four points behind Darland.  He won his heat race to make the transfer, and then drew pill number eight for his feature starting spot.  Only one car (A. J. Anderson) had passed his MPHG Stealth, but he had passed two, advancing a spot from his start.  With Darland finishing tenth, that was enough to secure the title by just 8 points.

I knew that Dave (Darland) had to start back there quite a ways, Marvel explained later.  Going into it, I wanted to win.  And as the race progressed, Im not going to lie, I thought about just holding my position.  Just riding this one out and taking that checkered flag.  Consistency is going to win the championship.  When A. J. stuck his nose under me, I kind of got elbows up because I thought, Oh, no, Daves already here.  I stepped it up a little bit and the bottom got a little bit better.  Next thing you knew the white flag was out and I was thinking, Just one more lap, one more lap.  Coming around I thought, Im pretty sure I won it unless he finished right behind me.  And I probably had 30 people in my family, uncles, aunts, all my familys here, they were all jumping up and down.  I was just so overwhelmed, I almost shed a tear in my car.

The glory goes to Jesus, because hes my savior, Marvel said as he stood with his crew in the pit area.  I pray to him while Im in the car and I pray with my guys.  Hell bless you as long as you believe.

Those seconds were really hard for me to take, especially the one at Kokomo.  But I just had to humble myself and focus on the big picture.  My guys worked so hard, everything was right.  Then Marvel talked about Dallas Mulvaney and MPHG Promotions.  I didnt have much in 2003 and then they stepped up.  In 2004 we ran good, and this year were really on top of our game. I just feel really blessed.

Stage Set For KISS Finale and Fireworks at Terre Haute Action Track

June 30, 2005 - With four races in the books and just one remaining, the focus of the King of Indiana Sprint Series turns to the Terre Haute Action Track this Saturday night when the coronation of the 2005 Sprint Car King will take place amid Independence Day fireworks.  Combining a huge 4th of July celebration and the concluding event of KISS’s fifth season, which is again co-sanctioned by the Midwest Sprint Car Series, pays $2,500 to win and adds another $1,400 to the KISS champ, a memorable night is in store for racing fans.

The stage for the final battle has been set during the previous outings and with just one 30-lap main event remaining, only 100 points separate the top five.  While Lincoln, Indiana’s Dave Darland has held the top of the standings since his opening night victory, four other Hoosier veterans, Brownsburg’s Justin Marvel, Kent Christian, from Clayton, Mitchell’s Dickie Gaines, and A. J. Anderson of State Line, remain in striking distance.  But the road to the finale hasn’t been easy for any of the title contenders.  Darland, who was victorious at Putnamville’s Lincoln Park Speedway, had to race his way into the Paragon Feature through the “hooligan” after finishing fifth in his heat race.  Still, Darland made it clear that he would have a say in the series’ outcome when, after taking the green flag in the last row, he fought to a third place finish.

Sitting just four points behind, Marvel has led the most laps during the last two races and is hungry for his second KISS victory.  When Matt Neely grabbed the lead away with a ham-fisted slide-job at Kokomo, Marvel kept an eye on the title as he slowed, avoiding the contact that could have taken both cars out of the race.  Again, Marvel was out front at Paragon, but his sprinter was a handful in the tight turns.  When it pushed through the first turn groove on a restart, Christian drove smoothly underneath to earn his second KISS series win.  While neither Darland nor Marvel have finished outside the top ten in ’05 KISS racing, Christian’s worst finish was eleventh at Lincoln Park and he resides 45 points out of the lead.

Terre Haute’s half mile oval, located at the Vigo County Fairgrounds, is well known in racing circles as being a “driver’s track”.  It will take a stout engine, but after that the drivers have to adjust to the changing grooves, watch for places where the surface can take rubber and keep an eye on their tires, all while battling wheel-to-wheel and changing positions on each lap.  The challenge is significantly more than just holding the pedal flat on the mat.  And, as we guaranteed last week, the field will include more than six starters in the 30-lap feature and NO MICHELINS.

The Action Track’s gates will open at 5 pm, with racing beginning at 7.  The program includes UMP modifieds.  Tickets are $15 for general admission and $20 for reserved seating.

Kent Christian Captures KISS Thriller at Paragon

June 25, 2005 - Kent Christian captured Paragon Speedway’s King Of Indiana Sprint Series feature Saturday night, as Justin Marvel was again unable to seal the deal.  Christian pressured Marvel through the first 18 laps, before grabbing the lead and the victory.  Marvel took second to tighten the KISS point battle, as Dave Darland had a thrilling run from 21st to 3rd, Jon Sciscoe and Kevin Briscoe filled the top five.

After rolling to a stop on the front straight, Christian climbed through the cage of his R.L. Carter Trucking/Solid Base Waterproofing KC and raised his arms in triumph.  It was his second career KISS series victory.  Later, Christian, who builds his own sprint cars in Clayton, Indiana, pointed out that winning is particularly pleasing at 43 years old.  “It don’t matter if they’re kids or old guys, but beating the kids might be a little more fun.”

It took several tries to get the opening laps in the books, but once the feature got rolling, it was a dandy.  Marvel led from the pole, chased by Christian, Brad Sweet, Dustin Beliles and John Wolfe.  On the fifth circuit, Dickie Gaines slid over the cushion in turn two and down the hill before coming to a stop near the Armco and was unable to restart.  At the front, Marvel and Christian skirmished, with the MPHG Stealth opening a half straightaway lead several times, and Christian riding on his bumper or nosing inside at others.  At the same time, Darland was holding a clinic on how to race from the last row to the front, using the cushion.  Before the race was half over, Darland had climbed into seventh, just behind Sciscoe and Briscoe.

After leading the first 24 laps at Kokomo a week earlier, Marvel was in control through the first 18 at Paragon.  He found his car was way too tight and wouldn’t turn, or too loose and wanting to spin out, all within the same lap, and struggled to find a balance.  Christian was just waiting for the right opportunity.  On a lap 19 restart, following a tangle involving Rocky Thickstun and John Wolfe, Christian ducked past Marvel, who was fighting to get his car turned, on the inside of the second turn.

Once out front, Christian was not challenged, as Marvel came under fire from Darland in the closing laps.  He took the checkers 15 car lengths ahead of Marvel.  With Sciscoe and Briscoe hustling from tenth and eleventh on the grid to top five finishes, all 30 laps were filled with close racing.

“Justin was too tight,” Christian said when asked to describe the winning pass.  “He was struggling a little bit.  We were looser.  When he got that big push and left the door open, I could just gas it up.  It’s good racing with Justin, although we’ve had our troubles in the past.”

“I just couldn’t get the thing to turn going into turn one,” Marvel said.  He explained that the left rear would overdrive the car and push the nose up the track.  Then he suggested that he should have handled the final restart differently.  “I should have started back in four instead of on the straightaway, I guess.”  Then he added, “The track was really good.  We were really backing them in and pulling the front wheels way up.”

KISS at Paragon: Neely Will Commute
Guaranteed: More Than Six Will Start The Feature
& No Michelins

June 21, 2005 - Last Sunday, Matt Neely became the newest feature race winner in the King of Indiana Sprint Series.  As he was loading his equipment after the exciting victory, Neely promised that he would commute to Paragon Speedway for Saturday’s KISS racing program from Richmond, Virginia, where he will compete during the day.

For the fan’s benefit it should be noted that, as with every KISS race, a full complement of racing machines will start the feature.  KISS rules specify either a 20 or 22 car starting field and with 48 cars in the pits at Kokomo, 22 started the feature.  At Lawrenceburg, 20 cars started, and Lincoln Park Speedway, also with 48 entrants, started 21.  Additionally, tire issues are not anticipated, as Michelins are not found in the sprint car pits.  Most of the competitors will trust their safety to Hoosiers, although some American Racer and Goodyear brands may also be found.

As the next-to-last event for the Hoosier racers before the series concludes, Saturday’s KISS race will be vital.  Dave Darland continues to occupy the top the point standings, as he has since winning the season’s first event at Lincoln Park Speedway, however Justin Marvel is still in contention and trails by only 9 points.  Those who witnessed Marvel’s strong performance on Sunday know that he is hungry for another KISS victory and the series championship.  But with Dickie Gaines only 24 points behind Darland, Kent Christian lagging by another 31 and A. J. Anderson just 19 more arrear, there are a handful of drivers who can lay claim to this year’s title under various circumstances.  Obviously the various circumstances will all take place on the racing ovals between the green and checkered flags.

Paragon Speedway will open their pit gate at 4 pm on Saturday, and the main grandstand at 5 pm.  Racing will start at 7:30.  Admission is $15 for adults in the grandstand and children 12 and under are free with an adult admission.  The pit admission is $25.  The racing program includes street stocks and bombers.  Visit www.paragonspeedway.com for more details.

SCHEDULE.  The Independence Day weekend is the home of KISS’s grand finale and the 2005 King of Indiana Sprints will be crowned on Saturday, July 2, at the Terre Haute Action Track.

Matt Neely Claims Awesome Kokomo KISS

June 19, 2005 - “This is awesome!” Matt Neely told a friend on his cell phone minutes after winning the King of Indiana Sprint Series main event at Kokomo Speedway Sunday.  Then he advised us, “it’s great to be as competitive as we were tonight.  It means a lot because we pour everything we’ve got into this sprint car deal and we do the best we can every night.”

Neely led the final seven circuits to win his first KISS series feature.  Justin Marvel led the first 23 laps and held second, as Shane Cottle took third, with Bill Rose and Brandon Petty also in the top five.  With a sixth place run from the eighth row, Dave Darland continues to top the KISS points, with Marvel close on his tail.

Beginning the night second in points, Dickie Gaines spun in the first turn on the first lap and restarted from the tail.  From there he could see Darland, who took the green from 16th spot.  Running smoothly on a generous cushion, Marvel opened a half-straightaway lead after starting on the outside of the front row.  Neely ran in fourth, behind Cottle and Rose through the first half of the race.

Following a lap 9 restart, Neely’s Twister Chassis/Maverick Energy machine began to surge forward.  On the 21st circuit he caught Marvel as they worked through traffic.  With Marvel continuing to work the high line entering turn one, Neely dove low three laps later and completed a nearly textbook slide job, compelling Marvel to lift momentarily before they drag-raced out of turn two.  Marvel fought back before Neely took command and opened a 6-car length advantage at the finish.

Neely said that he needed to settle down, stop driving too deep into the turns and missing his marks, before he began to gain on Marvel.  “The straighter I’d enter, the better I’d get off,” he said.  “I tried to work any hole I could find or any room to race on.  I had to throw a slide job on him.  I hate to do that, but I thought anybody else would have done it.”

With 48 cars in the pits and starting spots determined by a draw, six intense heats were run.  Rose, Kent Christian, Marvel, Neely, Jon Sciscoe and Petty claimed wins.  In the fifth heat, Shane Hollingsworth had a front end failure and slammed the first turn’s concrete.  The next heat race, Jesse Hockett rode out a hard flip in Lynn Reed’s F-5 after catching Kokomo’s turn 2 cushion wrong.

KISS Racers Anxious to Test Kokomo Makeover

June 13, 2005 -- The quest for the 2005 King of Indiana Sprint Series champion continues this Sunday at Kokomo Speedway.  While the Kokomo oval has always held the reputation of a very racy facility, an 8-month construction project has delivered a total makeover.  The track’s surface has been significantly reworked and surrounded with new walls and fencing (see extensive photos at www.kokomospeedway.net).  All reports indicate that Sunday is going to be a great night of racing.

While the box score shows that Dave Darland and Brandon Petty have already captured their first KISS series victories, the final three races will determine who will next gain the king’s throne.  Darland holds the slimmest of point leads, 242  241 over Dickie Gaines and a bunch of veteran sprint car racers are on their heels, including A. J. Anderson, Matt Westfall, Justin Marvel, Kent Christian and Jon Stanbrough.  However, given the point structure and unique KISS race format, anyone can still win the title.  To see someone with the potential for a strong race at Kokomo and the ability to carry that momentum to the KISS crown you don’t have to look any further than 19th in the points.  Shane Cottle is not only Kokomo’s defending sprint car champion, he also won this year’s opener on May 29th.  And Cottle’s victory in last year’s KISS race at the Terre Haute Action Track, site of the series finale, can’t be overlooked.  Updated information about the KISS series is available at www.kissracing.com.

Kokomo Speedway officials have named Sunday’s KISS race the “Bob Darland Memorial” in the memory of a great friend of racing.  The pit gate will open at 3:30, the main gate at 4:00 and racing at 6:15.  The posted program includes UMP Modifieds, Street Stocks and Thunder Cars.

SCHEDULE.  The KISS racers begin the final leg with a big show at Paragon Speedway on June 25, a Saturday.  The grand finale will headline the Independence Day program at the Terre Haute Action Track and crown the 2005 King of Indiana Sprints, on Saturday, July 2.

THE PURSE.  There’s $2,500 to win at stake when they push off for the main event at each track.  As in previous seasons, the teams will forgo qualifying and draw for heat race starting spots.  This year drama will be added as the top two finishers in each heat will re-draw for feature starting spots.  Each feature pays a minimum of $250 to start, while B-Main competitors will take home $50.

POINT FUND.  This year’s point fund will pay $1,400 to the King Of Indiana Sprint Series champion following the July 2nd Terre Haute Action Track finale.  The point fund pays the top five in the standings, with second place receiving $1000, while third receives $700, fourth $600 and fifth $500.

After Two: Darland Leads KISS Points

May 30, 2005 - With two King of Indiana Sprint Series races in the books, a pair of rainouts and three events to go, the point battle is still as close as it can be.  Dave Darland holds a slim one-point lead over Dickie Gaines.  A. J. Anderson sits just seventeen points out of first, with Matt Westfall four points behind him and fifth place Justin Marvel only 28 points behind the leader.

After suffering back-to-back rainouts at Gas City and Bloomington, Darland jumped into the point lead with his victory at Lincoln Park Speedway, in the first series race completed.  He followed that with a seventh place in Saturday’s race at Lawrenceburg Speedway.  Gaines was runner-up to Brandon Petty at Lawrenceburg after finishing sixth at Lincoln Park.  Anderson matches a third in the first race with a ninth place on Saturday.  Marvel and Westfall finished eighth and tenth at Lincoln Park, then Westfall was third and Marvel sixth at Lawrenceburg.  Petty’s victory at Lawrenceburg moved him to 11th in points, as he skipped the race at Lincoln Park.

Historically, it is a curious mix.  Of the top five, Darland, Westfall and Marvel have all won one KISS feature.  Even though Anderson hasn’t won a KISS race, he was second in last year’s points.  And even though Gaines, who sits second in points, has yet to win a KISS race, his is the 2001 series point champion.

Brandon Petty Outruns Lawrenceburg KISS Field

May 28, 2005 - Brandon Petty captured his first King of Indiana Sprint Series feature at Lawrenceburg Speedway, Saturday.  Wheeling Rodney Reynolds’ #3R, Petty ran down Jon Stanbrough and grabbed the lead just past the halfway mark.  Dickie Gaines hustled to a second place finish, followed by Matt Westfall, Tony Beaber and Kevin Briscoe.

As the King of Indiana Sprint Series field took the green for only the second time this year, Stanbrough burst ahead from his pole starting spot.  An early tangled sidelined Rick Vaughn, as Lincoln Park Speedway KISS victor Dave Darland climbed to 4th by lap 8.  Once Petty caught Stanbrough, making the pass as they exited turn four, he quickly opened a comfortable advantage.

The second caution of the 30-lap main came when Bryon Clauson hit an infield marker tire.  After starting 11th, Gaines picked his way steadily through the pack in his Popeye’s Chicken & Biscuits DRC.  But once into second, Gaines was unable to catch the flying Petty before the checkered flag.  Justin Marvel finished sixth, with Darland, Kent Christian, A. J. Anderson and Stanbrough filling the top ten slots.

In preliminary action, Marvel claimed the first heat race, Brad Stevens beat Petty and Marc Arnold in the second heat.  Briscoe captured the third heat, ahead of Darland (who started last) and Gaines.  Stanbrough took the fourth heat, followed by Westfall and Clauson.

Ted Hines nearly wrote the best headline of the night after hitting the infield tire, barrel-rolling and landing back on his wheels during his heat.  With help from Gaines, Hines repaired his car in time to line up on the tail of the C-Main, which he won.  Minutes later, in the B-Main, he made it into a transfer spot, but slipped, letting Jason Knoke sneak into the final transfer position.

Lawrenceburg Speedway Welcomes KISS Racers This Saturday

May 25, 2005 -While Dave Darland was collecting his first King of Indiana Sprint Series win last Saturday, Brandon Petty was capturing the sprint car feature at Lawrenceburg Speedway.  When the KISS contingent heads to the Southeast corner of the Hoosier state, along the Ohio River, for Saturday's racing at Lawrenceburg Speedway, the Roy Mattlin Memorial, Petty has to be considered one of the favorites to become the season’s second new KISS winner. Of last weekend’s top three finishers at Lawrenceburg, only Kevin Briscoe can claim a KISS victory, having won at both Bloomington and Paragon last year.  With a tradition of 40 or more sprinters in the pits, and drawing for heat starting spots instead of qualifying, it will be a race that anyone can win.

Just minutes from Cincinnati, a mile-and-a-half west of I-275 on Route 50, Lawrenceburg has been a traditional sprint car battleground, but this will be the first KISS race in the oval’s history.  The May 28th racing program includes AMSA 1200 Winged Mini-Sprints Nationals, Budweiser UMP Modifieds and Brockman Signs Super Stocks.  The pit gate opens at 4 pm, the general grandstand gate at 5 pm and racing will start at 7:15.  Tickets are $15, pit pass $25.

SCHEDULE.  The KISS series returns to Kokomo Speedway for the first time since 2002 on Sunday, June 19.  The KISS racers begin the final leg with a big show at Paragon Speedway on June 25, a Saturday.  The grand finale will headline the Independence Day program at the Terre Haute Action Track and crown the 2005 King of Indiana Sprints, on Saturday, July 2.

Darland Captures King Of Indiana Sprint Series Event At Lincoln Park Speedway

May 21, 2005 - Dave Darland topped a strong field of 48 sprint cars as the 2005 King of Indiana Sprint Series finally found dry land.  After the year’s first two races fell victim to Indiana’s fickle spring rains, Darland paced all but the first five laps at Putnamville’s Lincoln Park Speedway for his first KISS victory.  Levi Jones edged A. J. Anderson in a close battle for second, with Mat Neely and Bud Kaeding filled the top five.

Darland jumped into the lead with a charge around the top of turn one, but bounced sloppily through the turn at the opposite end, opening the door for Neely, the polesitter, to scramble past.  “I had trouble getting through the cushion in three and four,” Darland explained.  “I slid over it and had to abandon the top.  I tried the middle and then the bottom.”

Bart Grider held third in the early laps, followed by Anderson, Matt Westfall, Shane Cottle and Jones.  Running the bottom, Grider took second just before Dickie Gaines brought out a caution with a second turn spin on lap five.  It took just one lap after the restart for Darland to hustle around Grider, and motor into the lead when Neely got crossed up in turn one.

Once out front, Darland was in control, opening a full straightaway advantage by the halfway point.  Neely began to fight a push as Jones and Anderson worked past.  On the 23rd circuit, Grider spun in turn four, bringing another caution.  In the final laps, Darland pulled fifteen car-lengths ahead, while Anderson grabbed second, diving inside of Jones in the first turn.  But Jones returned the fight and reclaimed the position with two laps to go.

Darland said that he looked at the track before the feature and saw a lane around the top of turn one and two that he could run through smoothly.  “A big key to any race is figuring out where you can work, and I wanted to do that early,” he pointed out.  The victory gave the Lincoln, Ind., driver the lead in KISS series points.

Bloomington KISS Race Cancelled With Wet Grounds, Series Heads For Lincoln Park

May 20, 2005 - At 1 pm, Bloomington Speedway promoter Mike Miles gamely announced that in spite of heavy overnight rains, he was going to attempt to hold tonight’s King of Indiana Sprint Series event.  But by 4 pm, it became obvious that the facility was just too wet to pit all of the cars in line at the pit gate, and safely get fans in and out of the southern Indiana facility.

So now, with the first two races of the 2005 KISS series canceled because of weather, the racers look ahead to Saturday’s race in Putnamville, at Lincoln Park Speedway.  Located on Rt. 40, just off of I-70, west of Indianapolis, the racing program includes modifieds, super stocks and bombers.  The pit/fan gate will open at 3 pm, and the main grandstand gate at 4:30.  Hot laps follow the 5:20 driver’s meeting.  Tickets are $15, pit pass $25.  Children 5 and under are free, 6  10 years old $2, 11 and older are regular price.

SCHEDULE.  Saturday, May 21, Putnamville’s Lincoln Park Speedway, just west of Indianapolis.  Next weekend, Lawrenceburg Speedway will host its first KISS race on Saturday, May 28,.

King of Indiana Sprint Series Event at Kokomo Speedway Rescheduled

May 9, 2005 - The KISS race at Kokomo Speedway, originally scheduled for May 15, has been rescheduled to Sunday, June 19.  Major construction continues at the well-known oval located just north of Indianapolis.

Documenting their progress, Kokomo Speedway provides this update:

“As of Monday, May 9th, there are only two more pours needed to complete the construction of the concrete walls surrounding the semi banked racetrack.  The walls should be completed Wednesday.  At that time, a team of family members and volunteers will begin installing the new fence that we purchased from the Chicagoland Speedway.  This fencing is extremely durable (NASCAR regulated thickness) and should prove to be a safe barrier for all drivers.  At the completion of the fence installation, there will be a day or two of final dirt moving on each side of the walls, and we will be ready to roll.  We are looking at Memorial weekend as our opener (weather permitting with the remaining construction), and will open with a $3,000 to win sprint special.  Updated photos of the construction can be seen at kokomospeedway.net.”

In the meantime, the 2005 King of Indiana Sprint Series opens Friday night at Gas City I-69 Speedway.

SCHEDULE.  Don’t look for any black cats or full moons when the King of Indiana Sprint Series first convenes at the I-69 Speedway in Gas City, on Friday, May 13.  The next Friday, May 20, the KISS racers will unload at Bloomington Speedway.  Twenty-four hours later, Saturday, May 21, they will do battle at Putnamville’s Lincoln Park Speedway.  The next weekend, Saturday, May 28, the KISS racers will make their debut at Lawrenceburg Speedway.  Following a four-week break, KISS will begin its final leg with a big show at Paragon Speedway on June 25, a Saturday.  The grand finale will headline the Independence Day program at the Terre Haute Action Track and crown the 2005 King of Indiana Sprints, on Saturday, July 2.

(Please note that the KISS race at Kokomo Speedway, originally scheduled for May 15, is being postponed.  A new date will be announced soon.)

2005 King of Indiana Sprint Series Opener At Gas City Highlights Bumper Crop of Talent

May 5, 2005 - When the 2005 edition of the King of Indiana Sprint Series takes the green flag at the Gas City I-69 Speedway on Friday, May 13, the competition promises to be the toughest in the history of the five year old sprint car series.  With seven ovals hosting regular sprint car events on a nearly weekly basis, the Hoosier state has cultivated a bumper crop of racing talent.  The unique non-qualifying format employed in the KISS competition emphasizes the racers and the racing.

With heat race lineups created by a blind draw, the emphasis is placed on battling your way into the main event.  A quick look at the sprint car action that has taken place around the state during the first weeks of this young racing season may provide a glimpse into the future.

John Wolfe, a multi-time Gas City sprint car champion, opened the northeastern Indiana track’s season with a victory over Brandon Petty.  Gas City’s defending champion, Shane Cottle was the fast qualifier.  Continuing with a theme, Wolfe and Petty finished in the first three at Lawrenceburg Speedway, but they were headed by Bryan Clauson.  Petty also captured a feature win at Putnamville’s Lincoln Park oval.  At Bloomington, it was Dickie Gaines topping Jay Drake, with Darren Hagen setting fast time.  And Dave Darland outran Jon Stanbrough at the Terre Haute Action Track.

Those are nine drivers to watch when they show up to race.  Add Michael Burthay, the defending King of KISS, and Kevin Briscoe, who claimed a pair of victories in ‘04 KISS events, plus Kent Christian, Justin Marvel and Matt Westfall, all past KISS race winners, for a baker’s dozen plus one.  Last year, 137 different drivers signed into KISS events and not one of the feature race winners had won a KISS event before ‘04.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

2005 King of Indiana Sprint Series Schedule
Reflects Steady Growth

February 24, 2005 - Through a cold and snowy winter, the promoters of the King of Indiana Sprint Series (KISS) have been eagerly looking forward to the coming racing season.  Almost as soon as the final checkered flag of the 2004 KISS series waved over Paragon Speedway, plans were being put in place for the upcoming, fifth annual tour of the Hoosier state.  It was quickly apparent that the series was going to grow, but at that time they didn’t realize how much.

It was noted after last year’s series that there had been a 10% increase in the number of drivers participating, over 2003.  Now, before the gates even open, the 2005 series reflects a 40% increase.  That is 40% more tracks, 40% more money in the point fund and 40% more great racing.  The new venues extend KISS’s north-to-south reach with events in Kokomo and Lawrenceburg.

SCHEDULE.  The KISS season gets a flying start as the first five races take place over three consecutive weekends in May.  It will open the way it has each year before, with a thrilling night of racing at the I-69 Speedway in Gas City, on Friday, May 13.  That Sunday, May 15th, the series returns to Kokomo Speedway, after a two-year absence.  The following Friday, May 20, the KISS racers will unload at Bloomington Speedway. The grand finale will headline the Independence Day program at the Terre Haute Action Track and crown a new (or repeat) King of Indiana Sprints, on July 2.

THE PURSE.  With a total purse exceeding $80,000 to be paid out, drivers will be battling for a winner’s payday of $2,500 when they push off for the main event at each track.  As in previous years, the teams will forgo qualifying and draw for heat race starting spots.  This year drama will be added as the top two finishers in each heat will re-draw for feature starting spots.  Each feature pays $250 to start, while B-Main competitors will take home a minimum of $50.

POINT FUND.  Immediately following the July 2nd Terre Haute Action Track finale, this year’s point fund will pay $1,400 to the King Of Indiana Sprint Series champion.  The point fund pays the top five in the standings, with second place receiving $1000, while third receives $700, fourth $600 and fifth $500.

SPONSORS.  Elliottbrand Web Designs, in Westport, IN, created the KISS website, which provides a highly functional and effective tool that places the King Of Indiana Sprint Series within arms length of racing fans around town and around the world.  Visit them at www.Elliottbrand.com.

KISS is continuing to look for sponsorships for the upcoming series.  Not only will a sponsor actively participate in one of the most exciting sprint car programs of the coming season, but their investment will also garner the benefits of broad visibility and productive publicity among a growing segment of motorsports enthusiasts in Indiana’s most active metropolitan areas.  For more information contact the promoter at your closes KISS racing track.
