Season Champions Crowned at Lincoln

By Jake Croxton

Lincoln, Ill. (Sept. 4) – Lincoln Speedway’s second season drew to a close with the crowning of five new champions and a near-record 142 cars pit side at the Logan County Fairgrounds facility.

Springfield’s Korey Weyent held off Middletown rookie Bret Tripplett in the title chase after the 20-lapper. Meanwhile, Mitch Wissmiller and Derek O’Dell dueled for the win. Eleventh-starting O’Dell ran down the pole-winning Wissmiller in the race’s late stages and took the top spot, before a caution negated the pass. Wissmiller held on over the final two circuits to score his second win of 2005. Chad Branson, Weyent, and Jeremy Standridge followed the lead duo across the line.

Going into the 15-lap Street Stock finale, one point separated Terry Miller from Larry Russell, Jr. and Chris Tackett. Miller led early on before problems sidelined the Lincoln competitor. That allowed Russell, Jr. to cruise to the win and the title over Tackett, Kevin Skelton, Brian Mileham, and Justin Durbin.

Defending UMP Modified champion Brian Lynn did what he had to do by holding off Roben Huffman throughout the 20-lap main. Jeff Leka, Kovski, and Doug Hobbs rounded out the top five. By virtue of his fourth place finish, Springfield’s Kelly Kovski was able to cling to the championship by just four markers.

Steve Lance, Jr. blasted to the front and racked up his sixth win of 2005 in the Late Model feature. The Cuba, Ill. driver bested a charging Shane Allen, Chad Pratt, Gary Shields, and Mike Fannin. Lance, Jr. also claimed the track title over Allen.

                J. R. Eskew found victory lane for the thirteenth time of the season in Wild Thing action. Eskew held off Damon Jones in the 15-lapper. Matt Turley, Bob Sanders, and Rick Lowe completed the top five.

The final B&H Promotions event of 2005 will take place next Saturday, September 10th. The Demolition Derby competitors will take center stage on the front straightaway of the Logan County Fairgrounds ¼-mile.

O’Dell Nabs Sportsman Special, Leka Tops UMP Mods

By Jake Croxton

Lincoln, Ill. (Aug. 28) – Wes O’Dell turned an eighth-to-first Heat Race run into a feature win in the Sportsman 15-lap main. O’Dell held off Greg Kimmons throughout the balance of the event to claim the victory. Scottie Dehm, Ernie Dodd, and Steven Mattingly followed across the line.

Doug Hobbs led early on in the UMP Modified 20-lapper. Near the fifteenth circuit, Jeff Leka made his presence felt as he worked to the outside of Hobbs made his case for the feature win. Leka nipped Hobbs at the line for his fifth checkered flag of 2005, relegating the Emden, Ill. driver to second. Brian Lynn, Terry Pearson, and Nick Neville finished in the top five.

Tim Lance started on pole and led all 20 laps of the Late Model finale. Lance scored his second win of the season ahead of Shane Allen, Gary Shields, Ryan Blakeman, and Russ Adams.

Terry Miller and Jim Quinn battled to the checkers in the Street Stock 15-lapper. Miller came out on top for his fifth win of 2005. Danny Glover crossed the line in third ahead of Chris Tackett and Larry Russell, Jr.

Justin Buchholz’s spin while leading turned the top spot over to Erik Close in the Classic Modified feature. That opened the door for Tom Schnabel to make an outside pass and pick up his first career victory. Close, Patrick Bruns, Rob Guss, and Steve Dixon finished in the top five.

                J. R. Eskew racked up another Wild Thing trophy. Damon Jones had a shot to take the top spot, but had to settle for second. Eddie Keller, Eric Keymon, and Tyler Griffin rounded out the top five.

Season Championships grace the Logan County Fairgrounds ¼-mile next weekend. Outlaw Wingless Sprint Cars, Late Models, UMP Modifieds, Street Stocks, and Wild Things will battle for the final time in 2005. The season ending event will be September 10th as the Demolition Derby takes to the facility.

Branson Bests Lincoln Non-Wing Field

 By Jake Croxton

Lincoln, Ill. (Aug. 21) – Sherman, Ill. driver Chad Branson cruised to his first career Outlaw Wingless Sprint Car win at Lincoln Speedway in Lincoln, Ill. Branson toured the Logan County Fairgrounds ¼-mile ahead of veteran Terry Babb in the red-plagued 20-lapper. Pole starter Bill Schemonia, Bill Waite, Jr., and Erik Close provided action of the driver-unfriendly sort and all walked away from separate flips. Points leader Korey Weyent, current runner-up Bret Tripplett, and Manny Rockhold followed Branson and Babb in the top five.

Mike Chasteen entered the last lap third and took home the UMP Modified 20-lapper. An ARCA-themed battle pitted former Miler Randy Huffman and points leader Kelly Kovski, fresh off his inaugural start in the 100-miler earlier in the day, against one another for the entire distance. The two swapped the top spot before last lap contact allowed Chasteen a lane underneath and the Creve Coeur veteran picked up his second Lincoln Speedway win. Chasteen won the very first Lincoln UMP Modified main a year ago. Huffman, Kovski, Roben Huffman, and Blake Buchholz completed the top five.

Robert Reynolds enjoyed his first career Lincoln Street Stock win after holding off a charging Terry Miller. Roy Magee ended a string of bad luck in third. Larry Russell, Jr. and Brian Mileham finished in the top five.

 J. R. Eskew put the seal on another Wild Thing 15-lapper. Damon Jones won the race for second, while Matt Turley, Eddie Keller, and Eric Keymon had top five runs.

Street Stocks will fill out next week’s ambitious six-class offering. Late Models, UMP Modifieds, Wild Things, Sportsmen, and Classic Modifieds will fill the card.

Repeat Winners Share Lincoln Victory Lane

By Jake Croxton

Lincoln, Ill. (July 17) – Jeff Leka and Kelly Kovski started on the front row and put on a 20-lap war for the front position during the 20-lap UMP Modified feature at the Lincoln Speedway. Leka got the better of Kovski and posted his fourth win of 2005 on the Logan County Fairgrounds ¼-mile. Todd Kirkland survived a sheet-metal ripping excursion to finish third, while Friday winner Nick Neville and Doug Hobbs followed across the line.

Steve Lance, Jr. set sail and led every lap during the Late Model 20-lapper. Lance, Jr. Lance, Jr. rattled off his fifth win in seven starts on the ¼-mile. Last week’s winner Tim Lance led a wild charge to the line for second, while Shane Allen, Gary Shields, and Matt Beadles rounded out the top five.

Doug Orseske topped the 20-lap UMARA Sportsman Midget main. Orseske held off Danny Drogemueller over the final seven circuits to pick up the win. Joe Knippel, Rich Peceniak, and Scott Shilkuski finished in the top five.

Terry Miller completed the weekend sweep in Street Stock action. The Lincoln competitor led the final fourteen laps after maneuvering around Ernie Dodd from the outside of row one. Robert Reynolds came from seventh to second. Jim Farley, Chris Tackett, and Larry Russell, Jr. completed the top five.

                J. R. Eskew held off David Lauritson to rack up another Wild Thing win. Doug Lauritson brought home third, while Damon Jones and Curt Boggs finished in the top five.

UMP SUMMERNATIONALS JULY 15....$10,000 TO WIN
thanks to SMASH for the story

After choosing to set out last night, (Macon) and drawing criticism from many of the fans, Shannon Babb looked relaxed and rejuvenated tonight for the 20th stop of the 2005 summer cross country trek known as the Summer Nationals.

Babb of Moweaqua, Illinois set the all-time UMP Summer Nationals win record tonight as the UMP traveling contingent made their first ever visit to the Lincoln Speedway in Lincoln, Illinois. The 20th stop on the 29 city tour produced the best racing ever witnessed by fans at the fairgrounds track and was beautifully prepared under the supervision of Bob Sargent and his Track Enterprises crew.

As Babb rolled into victory lane tonight amongst a mix of cheers and jeers, Babb poked a little fun at those fans who criticized his decision last night to sit out at the Macon Speedway Herald-Review 100 after rain showers pelted the track and left it a muddy mess. Babb said "Bob Sargent really knows how to prepare a race track and we had one great track tonight to race on so I thought I would give it my best to give my fans a show." those comments drew a loud applause from the true Shannon Babb race fans and left a smile on Babb's face.

In post race conversation with Babb, he stated that the only thing missing to complete this years Summer Nationals would be the fact that Bob Memmer (founder and longtime operator of UMP who passed away during last years Summer Nationals after a long fought health battle) wasn't able to be here to see the new record as it was established.

Babb was once again behind the wheel of his favorite car that bears the moniker of "Full Pull" a C.J. Rayburn Race Cars chassis, the only chassis proven to be stronger than dirt and the choice of the winners on the 2005 UMP Summer National Tour, which sports a Jay Dickens Engine with sponsorship from CAR CITY, G&C Enterprises, PRC, Watters Autoland, J&J Steel, KARL Chevrolet, Outlawd Motorsports, Platinum Motors & RV, ALLSTAR Performance, Sunoco Race Fuels, Triple B Outfitters, Outlawd Motorsports, Mike Mudd Tractor and Combine Repair, Wick Racing, Hoosier by Smash, Indy Screen Print, Petersen Systems, Weld Wheels, IMPACT Safety Equipment, Dyers Rods, Bert Transmission, Sweet Manufacturing, Chubby's Meals on Wheels and Petroff Towing.

Rodney Melvin began the evening by recording the fastest qualifying lap with a time of 13.762.

The dash was won by Dennis Erb over Babb, Billy Moyer, Rodney Melvin, Jeep Van Wormer, Jimmy Mars, Brian Shirley, Randy Korte and Mike Mullvain.

Heat races were captured by Shirley over Terry English, Mike Marlar, Tim Lance, Jay Johnson, Bruce White, Shane Allen, Jerry Reeder and Billy Drake, Randy Korte over Steve Hillard, Mark Voigt, Patrick Sheltra, Christian Rayburn, Craig Richards, Rick Haley and Ron Bauman and Mike Mullvain over Kevin Weaver, Johnny Johnson, Ryan Unzicker, Joe Ross, Jr., Donnie Walden, Chad Smith, Russ Adams and Kellen Conover.

The consi was won by Ross, Jr. over Jay Johnson, Christian Rayburn, Richards, Smith, Conover, White and Reeder.

Billy Drake was added as the UMP Summer Nationals provisonal to round out the 21 car starting field.

When the green dropped on the 40 lap main event Erb would roll out to the lead with Babb, Moyer, Melvin and Van Wormer in tow. On lap 5 Moyer made hard contact to the rear of Babb as the duo exited turn 2. Moyer spun and drew the caution and was relegated to the rear of the field and would retire for the night 2 laps later.

On lap 23, babb would take the point from Erb with Shirley, Korte, English and Hillard having worked their way into position.

Babb would never look back, lapping up to 7th place when the checkered flag flew. Following Babb at the stripe were Erb, Shirley, English, Korte, Mars, Hillard, Drake, Sheltra and Weaver to complete the top 10.

Standridge Celebrates Career First at Lincoln

By Jake Croxton

Lincoln, Ill. (July 10) – Jeremy Standridge worked around early leader Terry Babb and promptly pulled away to earn his first career Outlaw Wingless Sprint Car victory at the Lincoln Speedway. The third generation competitor started fourth and made the winning move near the mid-way point of the 20-lapper. Babb held on for second, while Tommy Rockwell and Bill Waite, Jr. crossed the line in third and fourth. Bret Tripplett stormed through the field after being involved in an early caution and battled to a fifth place finish.

Marty Hiser got the jump on Jeff Leka and surged to the lead in the UMP Modified 20-lapper. Hiser had company with both Leka and sixth starter Doug Hobbs in hot pursuit. The trio swapped the top spot before Hiser slowed with rear end trouble. Leka dove under Hobbs and set sail to pick up his third win of 2005. Hobbs equaled a career-best second, while Brian Lynn, Kelly Kovski, and Jason Fletcher followed across the line.

Larry Russell, Jr. and Terry Miller dueled at the front of the 15-lap Street Stock main. Russell, Jr. came out on top for the third time this season, besting Miller by a couple car lengths. Lance Johnson, Chris Tackett, and Kevin Skelton rounded out the top five.

Dodd Takes Wynn’s Sportsman Qualifier, Tackett Stops Miller at Two

 By Jake Croxton

Lincoln, Ill. (July 3) – Ernie Dodd maneuvered around early leader Jeff Moe and held off constant pressure from Gary Fox to claim the 30-lap Freedom 2005 Challenge Wynn’s Sportsman Qualifier at Lincoln Speedway. Dodd worked traffic to perfection and took his second career win and first at Lincoln. Fox was unable to wrestle the top spot away on two late restarts and settled for second. Bobby Morgan, Moe, and Greg Kimmons finished in the top five. By virtue of consistency throughout the three day swing that began at Jacksonville and Fairbury, Brandon Roberts celebrated the Freedom 2005 Championship.

Chris Tackett ended Terry Miller’s two-race win streak after leading the majority of the 15-lap Street Stock main. The victory was Tackett’s second at the Logan County Fairgrounds ¼-mile. Miller had a run on Tackett with four laps remaining, but a caution killed the run and put Tackett in control of the restart. Tackett held on ahead of Miller, Larry Russell, Jr., Roy Magee, and Brian Mileham.

Another Lance entered victory lane during the Late Model 20-lapper. Tim Lance held off a last ditch effort from brother and current point leader Steve Lance, Jr. to claim his first Lincoln Speedway win by less than a foot. Rick Haley finished in third, while Shane Allen and Gary Shields completed the top five.

 J. R. Eskew started on pole and never looked back during the Wild Thing 15-lapper. Eskew was never challenged as Bob Sanders held off Steve Huffman for second. Damon Jones and Brad Leonard rounded out the top five.

Wissmiller Wallops Outlaw Wingless Sprint Field at Lincoln

By Jake Croxton

Lincoln, Ill. (June 12) – Mitch Wissmiller started the $1,000 to win Outlaw Wingless Sprint Car feature on pole and thirty laps later, found himself in victory lane. Wissmiller earned the pole by virtue of his Dash win and led every lap. Pekin, Ill. veteran Manny Rockhold piloted the Boles sprinter to a runner-up finish. The cagy veteran avoided near disaster after jumping the cushion near the race’s two-thirds mark. Korey Weyent, Dale Christian, and A. J. Bruns rounded out the top five. The Outlaw Wingless Sprint field grew to 27, prompting B&H Promotions to leave the winners’ share at $1,000 when they return in two weeks. Matt Dobey and Josh Goode each took separate wild rides in preliminary action. Dobey was cleared at the track, while Goode was transported to the hospital. Goode was released later in the evening.

Todd Kirkland scored his second win of 2005 in thrilling fashion during the 20-lap UMP Modified feature. Kirkland watched Kelly Kovski ride the cushion as he battled pole starter Doug Hobbs, who was committed to the low line of the ¼-mile fairgrounds oval. As the trio entered the final corner, Kirkland found traction between the two leaders and won the battle to the start/finish line for the popular win. Brian Lynn moved from twelfth to fourth in the final rundown, while Marty Hiser finished in fifth.

Jeremy Nichols and Terry Miller paced the field in the 15-lap Street Stock finale. The duo raced along side one another until Miller lost traction and nearly spun the car. Miller fell back to seventh and cautiously worked back to second, but ran out of laps as Nichols entered victory lane for the first time. John Farris completed a strong run in third, while Chris Tackett and Kevin Skelton followed across the line.

Christopher Massey dominated the 15-lap 600cc Outlaw Mini Sprint feature. The Clinton, Ill. youngster racked up his ninth career race win at Lincoln. Ryan Jones finished in the runner-up position, while Nathan Charron, Austin Jones, and Lucas Sprague had top five runs.

                J. R. Eskew won a wild 15-lapper in the Wild Thing division. It was Eskew’s second win in a row and fourth this season. Bob Sanders was the bridesmaid, while Eric Keymon, Matt Turley, and Jonathan Schuck ended the event in the top five.

The next event at Lincoln will feature Late Models as the headliner. UMP Modifieds, 600cc Outlaw Mini Sprints, Street Stocks, and Wild Things will complete the card.
