Geno Kalb crowned 4 Cylinder Dirt Track World Champion at the Mighty Macon Speedway!

An all time record car count of 147 cars invaded the Mighty MACON SPEEDWAY on Saturday Sept. 24th for the 2nd Annual 4 Cylinder Dirt Track World Championship! This was the highest single night car count in the history of the Midwest speedplant!

A heartfelt THANK YOU from MIDWEST SPEED, Inc., organizer of the event,  to all those drivers and fans who despite high priced gas and threatening weather made the trek to be a part of the season ending extravaganza!

Four first time Midwest Speed Extravaganza winners were crowned at the 2nd Annual 4 Cylinder DIrt Track World Championship with Geno Kalb of Peoria taking the honors along with the 7' winners trophy and the $1,000 paycheck for his efforts, besting a field of 68 cars in the process!

The modified division was topped by Marty Hiser, with 2005 Macon Speedway champions taking the wins in their respective classes with Greg Kimmons taking the sportsman event and Larry "Bub" Russell taking the street stock portion of the race card.

UMP SUMMERNATIONALS....July 14....$6000 to win....100 laps .... thanks to SMASH for the story

A wise man once developed a theory called Newtons Law that if anything can go wrong it probably will. Truer words have never been spoken of the Herald & Review 100 at Macon Speedway on Thursday night.

Rain showers pelted the track in the early afternoon on Thursday, leaving the track and pit area a mess after rains had also previously covered the small Midwest farmtown the night before. With a full grandstand and a pit full of race cars, promoter Rich Webb was left in a no-win situation. The end result  was decisions that has left fans and drivers at odds with each other when most all of the top Summer National points contenders decided to load their cars and sit out the night.

This is a two-sided argument that in the end will probably leave parties having to agree to disagree.

Bottom line is that the promoter and staff did everything within their power to try to fulfill the craving of a grandstand full of fans who sat for over 5 hours to see a race.

For those who decided to sit the evening out, I understand your side, for those who decided to race, I understand your side. Congrats to all on both sides.

When racing finally got underway 23 of the 39 cars on hand decided they would attempt to race and Steve Sheppard, Jr. recorded the fast time with a lap of 10.971, the only driver to break into the 10 second barrier.

The trophy dash was won by Matt Taylor over Kyle Logue, Jason Feger, Rodney Melvin, Joe Ross, Jr., Brent Kreke, Frankie Martin, Steve Sheppard, Jr. and Kirby Damery.

Heat races were won by Don Hammer over Frankie Martin, Chris Dick, Don Cisco, III, Randy Meyers, Christian Rayburn, Rick Standridge and John Graham and Steve Sheppard, Jr. over Dick Taylor, Ed Bauman, Corey Daugherty, Doug Heber, Butch Smith, Jayme Zidar and Adam Mefford.

The anticipation for the 100 lap A-Main event was high and the action was plenty as the finale got underway. Pole sitter Matt Taylor led the field to the green and made contact with the outside turn 4 wall, nearly flipping his car and ending his night prematurely. Also involved in the opening lap melee was Jason Feger who would be forced to make an early visit to the pits. This moved third row pole sitter Joe Ross, Jr to the pole for the start of the main.

When the race took green on the restart, Ross jumped to the point and would never again be headed, survivng a mid race flat tire, with a speedy crew, Ross managed somehow to get his tire changed in the muddy infield and return to the track prior to a restart and was given his spot back at the front of the pack. (A somewhat unorthodox practice I will say, I know of no track where you can change a tire and get your spot back, BUT: this is and has been the practice of Macon Speedway and I will say that the officials have been consistent in their enforcement of this procedure).

Ross survived several mid race threats from Steve Sheppard, Jr. then Rodney Melvin and later Steve Sheppard again, but was just too strong and showed his muscle, overcoming the threats to lead the entire distance of 100 laps, lapping some cars 7,8, or 9 times on the small 1/5 mile speedplant. At the checkers, only 4 cars of the 9 running remained on the lead lap. Ross was followed to the stripe by Sheppard, Jr., Hammer, Logue, Dick, Rayburn, Dick Taylor, Zidar and Meyers to complete the field.

The H&R 100 win was the second for Ross, Jr. who had also won the race in 1995 and has been a dominant force at the midwest bullring, winning the previous two weekly shows in tune up for Thursday nights affair. Ross was joined in victory lane by his father Joe Sr. who was a longtime Midwest racer with a great deal of success at the Macon facillity as well as other tracks in the area.

Ross was driving a C.J. Rayburn Race Car owned by Bill West of Arcadia, Illinois with sponsorship from B.W.E., R&R Delivery and J.P. Floors.

June 18.....

by: Terry Young

Jason Feger rolled through the gates tonight and emerged a happy man with $6,000.00 more in his pockets than when he arrived. Feger, one of the many young guns in the Midwest put his name in the record logs of the Mighty Macon Speedway by capturing the 60th Anniversary Extravaganza held to celebrate the long heritage of the Midwestern Illinois speedplant.

The feature got underway with 5 former HERALD-REVIEW 100 winners in the lineup for the 60 lap A-Main event presented by J.D. Byrider. Joe Ross, Jr. would take a command in the opening laps from his outside front row starting berth and appeared very strong while being challenged by Dick Taylor and Kevin Weaver.

On lap 12. disaster struck as Don Cisco III was trying to get off the track and was trapped in the outside groove. After Justin Allgaier made contact with Cisco, once the caution was displayed Ross exited the race track and was pitside with a broken oil line. This turned the show over on the restart to Weaver and Taylor as the duo battled with Taylor taking to the top of the track and Weaver making his preferred line the hub.

Feger would take the lead on lap 32 and never look back as he masterfully worked the middle groove of the track to his advantage and pulled away from his challengers.

When the checkers fell over the field it was Feger in the LaBamba, Griffin Design, ABS #25 taking the honors ahead of Taylor, Allgaier, Weaver, Shirley, Hammer, Sheppard, Jr., Zidar, Erb, Gansmann, Standridge, Damery and Bauman.

Kevin Weaver began the night by posting fast time honros with a lap of 11.122.

The heat races were won by Ed Bauman over Kyle Logue, Dick Taylor, Joe Ross, Jr., Don Hammer, Steve Sheppard, Jr., Feger and Weaver, Roger Brickler over Corey Daugherty, Brian Shirley, Mike Mudd, Dennis Erb, Kerby Damery, Mark Gansmann, Jayme Zidar and Don Cisco III, Steve Ewing over Randy Meyers, Brent Helmkamp, Rick Standridge, Butch Smith and John Graham.

Dash action seen Dick Taylor take the honors in commanding fashion, reminiscent of his days of old when he was one of the dominant drivers at the track. Following taylor and establishing the first three rows of the feature were Ross, Jr., Sheppard, Jr., Weaver, Feger and Justin Allgaier.

Semi feature action which would transfer the final four starters in the 60 lap A-Main event was taken by Cisco, III over Brickler. Daugherty and Rick Standridge.

Jeff Leka claimed the modified feature for his sixth win this season at the track and fifth consecutive.

The street stock action was topped by Jeremy Rhodes with a closing lap pass for the win over Larry Russell.

Congratulations to Richie, Terri, Joey, Scotty and the entire Macon Speedway
gang on the 60th season of the Mighty Macon Speedway, the little track that could!

Macon Speedway 60th Anniversary Special Show

It was sixty years ago when Macon Speedway first opened the doors for auto racing and on Saturday, June 18th, we are going to celebrate another decade of auto racing with the 60th annual Wayne Webb Memorial Special. It's going to be an all day long show for this special event, starting with a car show from 10:00 A.M. til 3:00 P.M., with an estimated 120 cars on hand. Then from Noon until 3:00 P.M., Elvishimselves along with his band will entertain with all the great hit's from the king of rock and roll.

All the concession stands will be operating so there will be plenty of food & beverages for all the fans. For celebrating sixty years of auto racing, every 60th race fan gets in free, and race fans are encouraged to dress in sixties era clothing, because there will be a best dressed contest at intermission. The vintage cars will be on hand for auto racing, these were the old supermodifieds that raced back in the late 50's and the early 60's along with street stocks, modifieds & hornets, the sportsman will not compete that evening.

The main event for the evening will be the Late Model division with a 60 lap feature race with $6000 going to the winner. We're expecting a great field of cars for this event, it's one week before the summernationals and UMP has told us that there is not a special event scheduled on this date. So race fans mark this date on your calender, THE 60TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL-WAYNE WEBB MEMORIAL-SATURDAY JUNE 18th. THIS IS GOING TO BE A GREAT EVENT!

May 30

In the manner that has seen Joe Ross, Jr. win multiple track championships, again, Joe Ross, Jr. flexed his muscle and made a clean sweep of the Challenge of Champions event in honor of our veterans tonight at the Mighty Macon Speedway.

On an uncharacteristic slick track that went from one groove on the bottom early in the night, the preferred surface was against the wall by feature time and provided multiple grooves, with 3 wide racing at times.

Ross, Jr. began the evening recording the fastest lap of the 23 late models on hand with a time of 12.340.

The dash was then captured by Ross, Jr. over Kyle Logue, Rohn Moon, Steve Sheppard, Jr., Bruce Unterbrink, Ed Dixon, Jason Feger, Kerby Damery and Butch Smith.

Springfield, Illinois Roger Brickler visited victory lane this evening at MACON SPEEDWAY after doing a burnout reminiscent of any NEXTEL Cup win. After a number of close calls at the little track that could, but always succumbing to some bad luck, Brickler made it the entire 25 laps tonight and got his name etched in the record books as a feature victor in the 60th Anniversary year at the Midwest speedplant!

Upon exiting the car in victory lane, Brickler took some ribbing from the track announcer, goading him to do a Carl Edwards patented backflip. Brickler who is nearly 7 foot tall climbed atop the door of his car, but thought better of attempting the move! :)

In his first ever visit to victory lane for a UMP feature win, Brickler bested Jayme Zidar, Mike Mudd, Eric Smith, Chad Pratt, Jason Cleaver, Earl Smith, Adam Mefford and Kenny VanDorn for the feature victory.

Fast time was turned in by Corey Daugherty with a lap time of 11.472.

Jeff Leka continued his winning ways of the previous evening at Farmer City Raceway by claiming the UMP modified event over Jim Leka with a pass in the closing laps.

Sportsman action was Scott Landers going to victory lane for his first feature win of the season.

Street stock action was topped by Larry Russell, making it a twofer thus far in the young season after also claiming the win in last weeks season opener.

All in all a nice night at the races with all of the features being concluded by 10:05. Hats off to speedway management for running a timely event and a hearty CONGRATULATIONS to Roger Brickler and his entire team on a well deserved feature win! The first one is always the hardest to get. Look out as they should come easier now!
