Hillard reigns supreme at Kankakee Valley
By Paul D. Bayne
KANKAKEE, Ill. – August 26 For the first time in 15 months, the Northern All Stars Late Model Series visited Kankakee Valley Motor Speedway, formerly known as just Kankakee Motor Speedway, and one driver so dominated the night that he’d wish the rest of the season were ran at the Osterhoff family run facility.
Steve Hillard of Sadorus, IL driving the Owens Stephens Racing/Masterbilt/Estes Racing Engines/Grand Prix had everything go his way Friday night as he cruised to an impressive runaway win to earn the $2,500 pay day in front of an enthusiastic crowd at the Kankakee County Fairgrounds complex.
Hillard began the 30-lap affair from the pole position and at the drop of David Whittington’s green flag, he was literally “off to the races”. Dennis Erb Jr., a former Kankakee track champion, Jason Feger, Brian Shirley, the 2004 NALMS Champion & Rookie of the Year, and Richie Hedrick would all give chase, but the elusive Hillard kept increasing his lead to nearly a straight-away.
With ten laps in the books, it was all Hillard, and clearly unless a caution flag flew, for all intents and purposes the race was for second between Erb and Feger. Feger closed the gap several times, reaching the back of Erb’s bumper numerous times, but never had enough to power past last year’s series runner-up. Duane Chamberlain, Dick Potts, Wes Steidinger, Steve Barnett, and Ted Loomis completed the top ten with twenty laps remaining.
On lap 11, Hedrick's motor would go up in smoke as he exited turn four and was forced to retire from the event, the victim of a broken oil line. That was the good news for Hedrick, as he had just completed installing a brand new Hedrick power plant prior to the event. Apparently, no harm was done to the motor itself, just a man’s pride.
As the field hit the halfway mark it was still all Hillard, with Erb fending off the challenges of Feger, while Shirley was a distant fourth, and Chamberlain and Steidinger were locked in a duel for the fifth spot. However, the man on the move was series point's leader and 5-time NALMS Champion Steve Barnett, who began the race from the sixteenth position, but because Kevin Weaver had problems even before the green flag fell, Barnett would move up one row to fourteenth. Barnett was now riding in the seventh spot. Weaver was slated to start from the outside of row two, but was forced to drop out with mechanical trouble on the initial pace laps of the event.
On lap 17, Steidinger would wrestle the fifth spot away from Chamberlain, who now found himself defending the sixth position from Barnett as the two raced side by side down the backstretch. Loomis, Potts, and Jayme Zidar would close out the top ten with just ten laps remaining.
With nine laps remaining Kankakee point's leader John Provenzano made an effort to work his way into the top ten past Zidar. With six laps to go, R.J. Gall’s machine would smoke heavily as he entered turn three, but he safely pulled his car to the infield grass without incident. One lap later Kerry Mathew would retire to the pits as well.
As the field circled the 1/3-mile clay oval for the final time and took the checkered flag, it was Hillard scoring an impressive flag-to-flag victory over Erb Jr., Feger, Shirley, and Barnett, as Loomis raced past Steidinger for sixth on the final lap, while Provenzano, Chamberlain, and Zidar rounded out the top ten.
With the win and subsequent fifth place finish by Barnett, Hillard was able to narrow the gap between himself and Barnett to 40 points with just five events remaining on the docket for 2005.
Several cars finished one lap in arrears including Dick Potts, Frank Heckenast Jr., Jarrod Holshauser, Mike Mataragus, and Dan Walden. The race had no lead changes or cautions.
Steidinger set fast time on the evening among the 26 entries with a lap of 14.210 to earn the Peterson Aluminum Fast Time Award. Barnett would earn the PPM Racing Products Hard Charger Award improving his position 11 spots on the grid. See Contingency Awards below for more race product winners.
