Wendell Wallace Masters Slick I-55 Raceway Surface For UMP-Sanctioned Pepsi Nationals Victory
PEVELY, MO – Sept. 16, 2006 – When a racetrack turns slick, Wendell Wallace turns it on.
The latest example was Wallace’s convincing victory on Saturday night in the UMP-sanctioned Pepsi Nationals 50 at I-55 Raceway.
“Wendell’s hard to beat in that slick stuff,” second-place finisher Randy Korte conceded after being unable to stop Wallace on the one-third-mile oval’s smooth, shiny surface. “That’s his kind of deal.”
“Wally is awful good when the track’s like that,” added Shannon Babb, who placed third. “He has a really good setup for slick tracks, so I’m not surprised to see him win the thing.”
Wallace, 40, of Batesville, Ark., didn’t downplay his slick-track expertise after earning $10,000 for his first career win in I-55’s traditional season-ending dirt Late Model event.
“We just geared up for it to be as slick as it could get,” said Wallace. “The slick tracks are where our program is a little bit better.”
After capturing a heat and the dash, Wallace took the feature green flag from the pole position in his Gaerte-powered GRT No. 88. He was initially outgunned for the lead by Highland, Ill.’s Korte, who started second, but he surged by Korte to assume command for good on lap 18.
Korte settled for second place, several car lengths ahead of Moweaqua, Ill.’s Babb. Sixth-starter Jimmy Mars of Menominie, Wis., and eighth-starter Brian Shirley of Chatham, Ill., completed the top five.
“Randy was awful good early on, but I just got through the lapped cars better than he did,” described the modest Wallace, who recorded his ninth overall triumph of the 2006 season. “I caught a break.”
Korte, 41, didn’t see Wallace’s deciding pass quite the same way. Korte, who is on the verge of clinching the 2006 UMP Late Model national championship, simply wasn’t strong enough to race with Wallace, who beat him to the finish line by nearly a full straightaway margin.
“We’ve been wondering what we could’ve done to the car to make it better, but Wendell’s just hard to beat on that kind of track,” said Korte, who drove his familiar Rocket No. 00. “I was kinda surprised I kept him at bay as long as I did.”
“Our car would just come and go. It seemed like it would be good for a few laps, then it would just be junk for a few. I don’t know if that was me using the tires up too much or something else, but we couldn’t run with Wendell because of it.”
Wallace maintained full control after the race was slowed, on lap 21, for a second and final caution flag. Even lapped traffic gave him little trouble.
“I just moved around in different grooves the whole race,” said Wallace, whose biggest triumph of ’06 came in late May when he topped the Show-Me 100 at West Plains (Mo.) Motor Speedway for the second time in his career. “One time I’d be good in a certain spot for five laps, then it seemed like that groove would slow down so I’d have to change my line and do something different.
“That’s the raciest I think I’ve ever seen this place.”
It was also the first time Wallace had ever visited Victory Lane at the high-banked track owned by NASCAR Nextel Cup veteran Kenny Schrader.
“We’ve had a couple good runs here over the years, but we were never able to seal the deal,” he said. “If feels good to finally get it done.”
Babb, who won I-55’s UMP Summernationals event earlier this year en route to capturing his second straight tour championship, was unable to tame a decidedly different track surface this time around.
“We won the Summernationals show here, but it was wet and sticky that night,” said the 32-year-old Babb, who drove Billy Moyer Sr.’s Rayburn No. 18. “It was super-slick tonight, but the track was excellent. It couldn’t be any better.
“I just needed to be better down the straightaway. I could roll around the corner pretty good, but they’d leave me down the straightaway because I was just spinning (wheels).”
Shirley, 25, entered the Pepsi Nationals with plenty of confidence, thanks to five wins in six starts this season at I-55 and a $6,000 victory in the previous night’s MARS/UMP ‘USA World 50’ at Paducah (Ky.) International Raceway.
But the rising star was searching for answers after finishing a quiet fifth in Ed Petroff’s Rocket No. 3s on a surface that was slicker than he’s been accustomed.
“When you don’t win, you just want to figure out what could’ve been better,” said Shirley. “I know my car wasn’t good enough to win, and that’s why I came over to talk to (Babb after the race) to see how he felt about his car.”
Rounding out the top 10 was four-time UMP Late Model national champion Rodney Melvin of Benton, Ill.; Jack Sullivan of Greenbriar, Ark.; 22-year-old Michael Kloos of Trenton, Ill.; MARS regular Jeff Taylor of Cave City, Ark.; and defending World of Outlaws Late Model Series champion Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark., who won last year’s Pepsi Nationals headliner.
The race’s only significant crash occurred on lap six after Ed Dixon got sideways in turn three and was hit by Matt Taylor. Mark Oller was also involved.
Thirty-five cars entered the event.
The original format called for the passing points system to be used for qualifying, but group time trials were run instead.
MARS tour points leader Bill Frye of Greenbriar, Ark., set fast time with a lap of 12.945 seconds, but he had a short night. His car’s motor exploded in a cloud of smoke as he set the pace two laps in the first heat, and he promptly loaded up and left the track.
Heat winners were Kloos, Babb, Wallace and Korte. Tim Manville and Joe Ross Jr. captured the B-Mains.

HISTORIC RACES SLOTTED
THIS WEEKEND FOR KENTUCKY, MISSOURI AND ILLINOIS
The Return of the “USA
World 50” Joins I-55 “Pepsi Nationals” and “Best Western Illinois’ Fall
Nationals”
MACON, IL (September 12, 2006) - This weekend, race fans in three states will
bear witness to some of the season’s best door-to-door, action-packed mud-slingin’
with three historic events.
Activities will kick off on Friday night at Paducah International Raceway. The
3/8-mi high-banked track was purchased by NASCAR stars Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Ken
Schrader and Midwestern promotional powerhouse Bob Sargent in November 2005 and
has underwent numerous improvements and renovations. One of the most
significant contributions of the new management includes the return of the
historic “USA World 50”. The “USA World 50” was one of our sports’ crown jewel
events for two decades and will return as part of the UMP/MARS Clash series and
pay tribute to two racing legends – Wayne Coakley and Bob Memmer.
Coakley, a name synonymous with dirt racing in the region, was tragically killed
in an auto racing accident while returning from a race and Bob Memmer was the
founding father of the United Midwestern Promoters sanctioning organization and
“friend of the little guy” who passed away in July 2004. The “Wayne Coakley/Bob
Memmer Memorial USA World 50” is presented by The Knuckle Busters of Paducah and
will feature PIR hotshoes such as Kevin Cole, John Tindal, Joe Morris and Terry
English as they square off against UMP/MARS veterans and touring drivers such as
Shannon Babb, Billy Moyer, Bill Frye, Brian Birkhofer, Terry Phillips, Brian
Shirley and Jimmy Mars. Prominent names such as Kevin Claycomb, Randy Sellars,
Terry English, Billy Drake, Jerry Inman, Tom Helfrich, Larry Moore and Jeff
Purvis are previous winners of this event and the staff of PIR is looking
forward to the continued growth and restoration of this event at a historic
track and in honor of two great contributors to our sport.
Competitors will then trek to Ken Schrader’s 1/3-mi high-banked I-55 Raceway in
Missouri for Saturday’s $10,000-to-win “Pepsi Nationals”. The traditional
September event will be the track’s final UMP Late Model event for the 2006
season and is bound to impress with lightening-quick, 4-wide racing action.
Touring drivers expected to make the journey from Paducah include 2005 “Pepsi
Nationals” winner Billy Moyer, 2006 UMP Summernationals’ champion Shannon Babb,
Brian Birkhofer, Jimmy Mars and Darren Miller. But the travelers better take
notice of a stout field of local talent including the 3 “B’s” that are all A’s
when it comes to performance – Bryan Collins, Brian Shirley and Billy Faust.
Collins sealed his 2006 track championship last weekend while Shirley has a 50%
win average at the track and the most feature wins this season and Faust has one
feature win this season but is always a fierce threat at the speedplant.
In addition to the 700+ horsepower UMP Late Models, UMP Modifieds, UMP/AARA
Street Stocks and AARA Pro 4 Stocks will also duke it out side-by-side for
victories. Sixty-four modifieds entered the 2005 “Pepsi Nationals” but it was
Mark Miner of Festus, MO, who won the $1,000 main event in a narrow victory over
Tom Ratajczyk. Based off of the performances in recent weeks, fans can expect
to see a stellar field of talent showdown on a well-prepared track for a fun
night of family-friendly racing entertainment since admission for kids 12 &
under is free!
With over $60,000 up for grabs in the posted purse, the UMP Late Models and
Modifieds will once again return to the famed one-mile clay oval of the Illinois
State Fairgrounds on Sunday, September 17, as Track Enterprises presents the
“5th Annual Best Western Illinois’ Fall Nationals”. The event will serve as the
capstone to the exciting tri-state swing with a $12,000 payday for the Late
Model event winner and $2,000 for the Modified champion. The high-speed
thunderous racing action at the beautiful one-mile facility always breeds an
exciting finish.
Last year, Pennsylvania’s Rick Eckert battled Tennessee’s Scott Bloomquist for
top honors. Bloomquist edged out Eckert claiming his second Fall Nationals’
victory. The UMP Modified event saw three Illinoisans battle for the lead.
Late model ace Brian Shirley set the pace early until mechanical problems ended
his day abruptly. Two-time Fall Nationals winner Jeff Leka inherited the lead
but a hard-charging Curt Rhodes would command the top spot and never relinquish
it for his first “Illinois Fall Nationals” victory.
A sampling of early late model entries include three-time “Illinois Fall
Nationals” winner Brian Birkhofer, track record holder Darren Miller, two-time
event fast qualifier Joe Ross, Jr., and former ARCA RE/MAX Series competitor
Mark Voigt. UMP Modified pre-entries include two-time winner Jeff Leka, 2005
winner Curt Rhodes, 2006 DuQuoin State Fairgrounds’ winner Brian Shaw, late
model ace Brian Shirley and a pair of talented Illinois’ throttlestompers Wes
O’Dell and Steve Adams. An impressive roster of talent in both divisions is
expected as numerous drivers have expressed intent to attend the “5th Annual
Best Western Illinois’ Fall Nationals” if timing and resources go as planned.
Please join us this weekend for three traditional dirt racing events featuring
some of the brightest talent our sport has to offer on three well-manicured,
unique tracks. Come out and get in on the action!

Bryan Collins,
Bobby Bittle, Troy Naeger & Trey Harris crowned 2006 Season Champions at I-55
Raceway!
Pevely, MO (September 9, 2006) A great week of
weather and a lot of hard work by the track crew led to one of the best racing
surfaces of the 2006 season at I-55 Raceway which provided some great side by
side racing all night long. It was also the night in which I-55 Raceway would
crown their 2006 season champions in all four divisions.
Brian Shirley of Chatham, IL put on a dominating performance in the UMP Late
Model main event. Shirley led all twenty-five laps of the main event and at one
point had a half-track lead over second place. But there was a tremendous battle
for the second position in which four different drivers held the position at one
point during the main event. Michael Kloos held the second spot during the first
ten laps until Tim Manville briefly took over the spot. Before long, last week's
feature winner Mark Oller moved up and took over the second position. But in the
closing laps, Tim Ratajczyk, who came in to the night in second place in the
season championship race, took over the second spot and held on to finish
second. Mark Oller crossed the line in the third position. Bryan Collins secured
the 2006 Season Championship with his fourth place finish. Collins had to
recover from mechanical problems in his qualifying heat race and started near
the rear of the main event. Tim Manville completed the top five.
The UMP Modified event may have been one of the best modified shows of the
season at I-55 Raceway. Mark Miner and Bobby Martintoni raced side by side for
the first twelve laps of the twenty lap main event. But it didn't take long for
the 2006 I-55 Raceway UMP Modified Track Champion Bobby Bittle to join the two
at the front. Bittle took his machine into first place by going right down the
middle of Miner and Martintoni and then proceeded to hold off Martintoni in the
closing laps. Miner settled for the third position with Jerry Grither taking the
fourth spot and Rich Whaley finishing fifth. This was Bittle's ninth feature win
of the 2006 season at I-55 Raceway and he won the points battle handily over
runner up Eric Mabery.
Troy Naeger's great 2006 season continued at I-55 Raceway as he won the UMP
Sportsman main event and secured the 2006 Season Championship. Mike Nicholson
came home second in the main event as well as second in the point's chase. Troy
Medley's strong second half of the season continued as he came home with a third
place finish. Paul Bauman took the fourth spot with Ronnie Bader completing the
top five.
Mike McMullin earned the victory in the AARA Pro 4 Stock main event. He held off
Chris Fisher in the closing laps to take the win. Jason Crump was third with
Trey Harris fourth and Brad Smith fifth. Trey Harris claimed the 2006 Season
Championship in the AARA Pro 4 Stock division.

Pevely, MO (September
2, 2006) Mark Oller of Highland, IL roared to his first feature win of the 2006
racing season at I-55 Raceway in the UMP Late Model division. Oller and track
point leader Bryan Collins battled it out side-by-side and nose-to-tail for the
first twelve laps of the event until a flat left rear tire forced Collins to pit
during a caution. Oller was then able to race away from the rest of the field in
the final half of the event while Collins raced back through traffic to a sixth
place finish. Dave Jumper and Craig Smith battled it out for the second position
with Jumper holding on at the end. Tim Ratajczyk came home with a fourth place
finish while Jeff Johns recovered from being involved in the big crash early on
in the main event to round out the top five. The late model feature event got
off to a rough start when big crash occurred at the exit of turn two that
involved some ten cars on lap three. Of all the cars involved, only Jeff Beyers
wasn't able to restart, but several continued with missing sheet metal and other
minor damage.
One of the most dramatic finishes in recent history took place in the UMP
Modified division. Ray Wagner led the first eighteen laps of the twenty lap main
event as Mike Harrison and Bobby Bittle fought it out right behind him for the
second position. But coming out of turn four to take the white flag, Wagner
bobbled which allowed Harrison and Bittle to slip past. Wagner fought back
trying to reclaim the top spot but came up short. Harrison crossed the line
first for the win with Bittle taking the second spot and Wagner settling for
third. All three cars crossed the finish line together. Mark Miner raced to a
fourth place finish while Joe Puricelli completed the top five.
Chuck Adams earned the win in the UMP Sportsman division. The main event saw
four different leaders in the fifteen lap event. Point leader Troy Naeger led
the opening laps until he spun in turn two and turned the lead over to Ronnie
Bader. Bader led several laps until Paul Bauman powered his way to the front
using the high side. Bauman led for several laps until a mechanical problem
ended his night early. Once Bauman dropped out, Adams who had moved in the
second position, took over the lead and held off Bader and Steve Maisel for the
win. Maisel powered his way into the second position on the final lap and Bader
settled for the third spot. Mike Nicholson came home with a fourth place finish
while Paul Belken completed the top five.
Trey Harris won the AARA Pro 4 Stock main event as he battled the entire
distance with Conrad Miner and Jason Crump. Crump edged out Miner for the second
spot while Chris Fisher followed Miner across the line in the fourth spot. Brad
Smith rounded out the top five.

Pevely, MO (August 19, 2006) Brian Collins and
Ed Dixon provided fans with one of the most thrilling finishes of the season in
the UMP Late Model division as the two not only raced each other, but also raced
Mother Nature. Collins and Dixon battled relentlessly for the top spot through a
steady sprinkling of rain drops in the final fifteen laps of the twenty-five lap
main event. Collins slipped past Dixon with just five laps remaining as slipped
under Dixon coming out of turn two. Dixon didn't give up the fight and chased
Collins through heavy lapped traffic. As the two came out of turn four to take
the white flag, the rain intensified and began coming down much harder. Collins
slipped as he came out of turn two and Dixon powered past him down the back
stretch. As they went into turn three, Collins showed his muscle as he powered
through turns three and four and moved back past Dixon and held on at the finish
line by a car length. Trouble ensued after they crossed the finish line and went
into turn one and the race track began getting very slick. About eight cars
including the top three spun in turn one after the checkered flag as the track
became greasy quickly with the rain really pouring down. There was no real
damage to any of the cars, but the very slick track made it difficult for the
cars to even get off the track. Two cars remained stuck on the very slick track
almost forty-five minutes after the event was over.
Billy Faust battled the first half of the feature with Collins for the second
position and then slipped back into the third spot and chased the leaders the
remainder of the way. The top three pulled away from the rest of the field as
the event went all twenty-five laps without a caution. Tim Ratajczyk took the
fourth position and early leader Jeff Johns came home in the fifth spot after he
had won his qualifying heat race and the dash earlier in the night.
Bobby Bittle and Scott Weber put on a classic battle in the UMP Modified
division. The two fought in out for the first sixteen laps of the twenty lap
main event. Weber tried numerous times to slip under Bittle lap after lap but
couldn't make the move stick. Bittle finally got away from Weber in the closing
laps, as Weber battled to hang on to the second position as Mark Miner moved in
to challenge for that spot. Miner was able to steal the second spot from Weber
as they came down side-by-side at the checkered flag with Miner just a nose in
front. Ray Walsh came home fourth and Doug Wood completed the top five. Ricky
Horton crossed the line in the sixth spot and Rick Stevenson made a charge from
the twenty-second starting spot to claim seventh.
After going all season without a feature win, Troy Medley claimed his second
consecutive UMP Sportsman main event. Medley held off the hard charging Jason
Keller for all fifteen laps to earn the win. Paul Belken took the third
position, Steve Maisel was fourth and Kent Nations completed the top five. Point
leader Troy Naeger suffered a flat tire late in the event and came back out to
salvage a fourteenth place finish.
Gary Price took the win in the AARA Pro 4 Stock division as he bested Tim
Hoffman. Trey Harris came home third, Mike McMullin was fourth and David Racer
rounded out the top five.

RAINED OUT
Pevely, MO (August 5, 2006) Brian Shirley of
Chatham, IL claimed his third UMP Late Model victory of the season at I-55
Raceway. Shirley took the lead on the opening lap of the main event from his
outside front row starting position and held off the early challenges of Mark
Oller and went on to victory. Oller, of Highland, IL appeared poised to earn his
first win of the season as he won his qualifying heat and then came back and won
the dash by passing Shirley for the top spot to earn that win. But Shirley made
the right setup changes to his car before the main event and earned his third
win in the last four main events at I-55 Raceway. Matt Taylor followed Oller
across the line for the third position, Jeff Johns took the fourth spot and Kyle
Steffens completed the top five. The track championship point battle took an
interesting turn as Ed Dixon, who was second in points at the start of the
night, suffered an engine failure in his qualifying heat. Point leader Brian
Collins loaned Dixon his spare car for the main event, but Dixon came out at
intermission to hotlap the car and it suffered a driveline failure as the
driveshaft and other components broke. Therefore, Dixon was unable to start the
main event and took a hit in the point chase.
Ray Walsh of St. Louis, MO earned his first win of the season at I-55 Raceway in
the UMP Modified division. It didn't come easy as track point leader Bobby
Bittle applied the pressure to Walsh for the entire twenty lap distance. Bittle
was able to pull along side Walsh on several occassions but could never make a
pass. Tim Hill started on the pole for the main event and slipped as far back as
the sixth spot before he found the right groove around the track and then he
came back to the third spot and was challenging Bittle for second by the end.
Rick Stevenson continued his great success in the last half of the racing season
as he ran up front all night long and came home in the fourth position. Ray
Wagner completed the top five.
The UMP Sportsman division put on a one of a kind battle that you had to see to
believe. No less than ten cars battled for fifteen laps in a huge pack as they
swapped position after position lap after lap. Steve Maisel, Troy Medley and
Troy Naeger provided a classic battle for the top spot while the others ran
right there with them as they used the entire racetrack to battle it out. In the
end, it was Maisel crossing the line first, with Medley in the second position
and Naeger third. Paul Bauman came from the fifteenth starting position to take
the fourth spot while Mike Nicholson completed the top five.
Brad Almond took his first ever win in the AARA Pro 4 Stock division. Almond had
his hands full as Trey Harris, Conrad Miner and Jason Crump were all over him in
the last half of the event. Almond kept a good line around the 1/3 mile oval and
held all three of them away to earn the win. Harris took the second spot, Miner
was third, Crump fourth and Mike McMullin completed the top five.

Pevely, MO (July 15, 2006) Shop N Save presented
Race Night for Special Champions at I-55 Raceway to raise money for Special
Olympic at I-55 Raceway and great field of racers turned out in support of the
event. There was $5,000 on the line for the winner of the UMP Late Model event
and Brian Shirley came away with the win in one of the most exciting late model
events at I-55 Raceway in recent history. Bryan Collins jumped out to the early
lead over pole sitter Terry English. Those two battled side by side for much of
the first ten laps of the twenty-five lap main event. Meanwhile, Steve Sheppard
and Brian Shirley were working their way through the field. A three-way battle
soon ensued for the top spot as Sheppard and Shirley moved in on Collins and
three put on a great battle as they swapped positions through lapped traffic.
Shirley soon found the best line through traffic and took the lead with just a
hand full of laps remaining and went on to victory. Sheppard also got by Collins
and took the second position. English crossed the line in fourth behind Collins
and Billy Faust completed the top five.
Bobby Bittle once again put on a clinic in the UMP Modified division. The point
leader simply dominated the main event once again as he cruised to the win. The
battle was for the second position between Bobby Martintoni, Tom Seets and Rick
Stevenson. Martintoni held the second spot for most of the event as Stevenson
and Seets tried to pass him high and low. A mechanical problem developed on
Martintoni's car as the right rear shock broke loose around the half way point.
However, it didn't slow him much as he continued his battle for the second spot
even with the problem. Stevenson's tires finally came in late in the race as a
long green flag run got them heated up. Stevenson took over the second spot with
just four laps remaining and held on to that spot at the end. Martintoni took
the third position and Seets was fourth. Jeff LeBaube worked his way from deep
in the field to earn a top five as he finished fifth.
Steve Maisel led all fifteen laps of the UMP Sportsman main event to earn the
win. Point leader Troy Naeger kept the pressure on as he stayed glued to
Maisel's bumper for much of the event. But Paul Bauman moved past Naeger and
began to challenge Maisel for the lead, but came up short and settled for the
second position. Naeger came home third, Mike Nicholson was fourth and Ronnie
Bader rounded out the top five.
Trey Harris claimed the AARA Pro 4 Stock main event as he held off Gary Price
for the win. Conrad Miner, Mike McMullen and Brad Smith completed the top five.

Pevely, MO (July 8, 2006) Bobby Bittle of
Smithton, IL stormed to another victory in the UMP Modified division to extend
his commanding point lead in that division. Rick Stevenson assumed the lead in
the opening laps from the pole position and led the first twelve circuits until
Bittle worked his way to the front. Bittle then drove away from the pack to pick
up the win. Stevenson then held off former multi-time track champion Scott Weber
in the closing laps to earn his season best second place finish. Weber took the
third position with Jerry Grither and Mark Miner completing the top five.

July 01 Saturday - i55 Pevely, MO $10000
to win 40 laps
I-55 Raceway
Pevely, MO.
by: Terry Young
Shannon Babb, of Moweaqua, Illinois once again visited victory lane to take
home the $10,000.00 winners share at Ken Schrader and Ray Marler's I-55 Raceway
in Pevely, MO. in the 13th outing of the 2006 UMP Summer Nationals.
While many of the naysayers have said how different the outcome would be if only
Don O'Neal and Brian Birkhofer etc. were following the Summer National grind,
they were proven wrong tonight as both of those drivers and others were among
the 41 cars entered for tonights action.
Babb now sits comfortably atop the UMP Summer Nationals point standings with 8
victories in the first 13 events of this years tour, and his 4th consecutive
win. The Midwestern Illinois standout has also topped $65,000.00 in the bakers
dozen of events thus far.
It appeared that perhaps Birkhofer was going to put a stop to Babb and his
string of wins in the last 3 stops on the tour as Birky drove to the lead on lap
28 from his 6th starting position. Babb who had lead all of the previous laps
running in the bottom groove, moved to the top on lap 27 to try to block
Birkhofer, but to no avail. Moving back to the bottom groove Babb drove back to
the lead on lap 38 and led the final 3 circuits to take the win ahead of
Birkhofer, Wendell Wallace, Jimmy Mars, Billy Faust, Patrick Sheltra, Brian
Collins, Terry English, Jeep Van Wormer and Tim Ratajcyzk.
Babb was driving his Bill Moyer, Sr. owned C.J. Rayburn built #18 powered by a
RaceTek powerplant with sponsorship from CAR CITY, Watters Autoland, Hoosier by
Smash, J&J Steel, Weld Wheels, Platinum Motors, Petroff Towing Outlawd
Motorsports, Dyers Top Rods, OutPace Products, ALLSTAR Automotive and Team
Petersen under the preperation of Jay Hunt, Andrew Barnes and Mike Mudd.
Randy Korte began the evening by setting the fast time with a lap of 12.872.
After additional track prep prior to the heats, the heat races were action
packed with multiple grooves and 3 wide racing thourhgout. The heats were won by
Shannon Babb from the fifth starting position over Faust and Ratajcyzk, Darren
Miller over Birkhofer and Steve Hillard, Randy Korte over O'Neal and Mars and
Wallace over English and Erb.
The consi races added Billy Drake over Collins and Ed Dixon and Van Wormer over
Sheltra and Jack Sullivan.
The dash was won by Babb over Korte and Miller. Wallace was busy repairing a
ring and pinion and was unable to compete in the dash and was relegated to the
fourth starting berth in the A-Main.

Pevely, MO (June 14, 2006) A big field of cars
turned out for I-55 Raceway's NASCAR Night that featured UMP Late Models, Winged
Sprints and the POWRi Midget Series. In the UMP Late Model division, Billy Moyer
of Batesville, AR took home the top prize as he took command at the drop of the
green flag and held off all challengers throughout the twenty-five lap event.
Chad Zobrist of Highland, IL finished off a great night as he took home the
second spot. Billy Faust worked through some heavy traffic and moved up from the
eigth starting position to finish third. Ed Dixon rolled across the line in
fourth and Mark Voigt rounded out the top five.
The Sprint Car main event saw some great battles for the lead. Several drivers
held the top spot at one point or another including Jason Evans and Ricky
Stenhouse. Ricky Logan took the lead with eight laps remaining and held off
Jerrod Hull and Joey Montgomery in the closing laps to earn the win. Jason Evans
took the fourth spot and Ricky Stenhouse completed the top five.
In the O'Reilly POWRi Midget Series, tires turned out to be the key factor in
the main event. Several drivers completely wore out their right rear tires
during the event. The real heartbreak came on the final lap when leader Brady
Bacon completely wore out his right and had to give up the lead to Ricky
Stenhouse, Jr., who's fate was just a little better as his right rear also gave
up as he came down to take the checkered flag. Following Stenhouse across the
line was Jerry Coons, Brad Kuhn, Joey Montgomery and Mike Hess.

Pevely, MO (June 10, 2006) Mother Nature
provided the fireworks as lightning lit up the sky all around I-55 Raceway
throughout the night as big thunderstorms rolled through the metro St. Louis
area all evening. But the storms stayed just north of the speedway as heavy
rains were reported as close as Arnold, MO (approximately 10 miles north). It
never even sprinkled at the track and the entire program was completed.
Brian Collins of Elsberry, MO won his second UMP Late Model main event of the
season at I-55 Raceway. Collins slipped past early leader Steve Sheppard on lap
six when Sheppard's car jumped the cushion in turn two and made slight contact
with the outside retaining wall. Collins would lead the rest of the way as
Sheppard gave chase. Sheppard could draw up close to Collins at times, but
Collins worked the lapped traffic flawlessly to take the win. The race had only
two cautions with the first coming immediately after the race started when pole
sitter Steve Sheppard and outside front row started Matt Taylor got together in
turn one sending Taylor into the outside wall and ending his night before one
lap was even completed. The second caution came on lap one when Ken Rumble and
Scott Gaeshel got together coming out of turn four. Rumble made hard contact
with the outside wall and ended his night early. Billy Faust and Danny Haynes
battled relentlessly for the third position throughout the main event. Faust
would claim the third position in the end as Haynes settled for the fourth
position. Ed Dixon made a nice charge through the field to bring home a top five
finish.
Highland, IL's Mike Harrison claimed his fourth feature win of 2006 at I-55
Raceway. Harrison was able to keep his perfect string of victories going as he
has won every main event that he has run at I-55 Raceway this season. Harrison
started on the outside of the front row and took command from the start. Ray
Walsh worked his way into the second position on lap two and ran down Harrison.
Walsh would battle Harrison for several laps, even pulling along side him
through the turns, but couldn't complete the pass. Walsh soon found trouble as
he jumped the cushion and made contact with the outside wall causing something
to break on his car which sent him spinning in turn four and ended his night.
Tom Ratajczyk made a consistant run along the low side and although he couldn't
run down Harrison, he came home in the second position. Ricky Horton had his
best run of the 2006 season as he claimed the third spot. Eric Mabery, who had
won his qualifying heat and the dash brought his car home in the fourth spot.
I-55 Raceway Modified point leader Bobby Bittle took the fifth spot after being
as high as third late in the race. He also found himself jumping the big cushion
and making some contact with the wall, which led to a couple of cars passing him
late in the race.
Troy Naeger's awesome racing season continued as he won his sixth feature event
this year. A huge crash on the opening lap occurred on the front stretch
involving no less than a dozen cars. Seven of those cars were unable to continue
with some suffering heavy damage. Scott Honer was briefly knocked unconscious in
the accident, but after just a couple of minutes he climbed out of his car on
his own and refused further medical treatment.
Once the action got restarted, Naeger pulled away to a commanding lead early on,
but a caution with three laps remaining tightened the field and Mike Nicholson
made it interesting in the final shootout at the end. Nicholson couldn't quiet
find his way around Naeger and brought his car across the line in the second
position. Chuck Adams claimed the third position with Jeff LeBaube and Paul
Bauman completing the top five.
Tray Harris claimed another victory in the AARA Pro 4 Stock division. Harris
held off a late charge from Chris Fisher for the win. Jason Crump took the third
spot with Mike McMullin and Tim Hoffman rounding out the top five.

4th ANNUAL TRI-TRACK
CHALLENGE YIELDS THREE DIFFERENT WINNERS, ELUSIVE BONUS UNCLAIMED
MACON, IL (June 6, 2006) - For the third consecutive year, superb racing
surfaces and stout competition yielded three different winners in the “Tri-Track
Challenge” including a pair of first time tour winners. So, yet again, the
$10,000 posted bonus for any competitor who can win two of the three “Tri-Track
Challenge” events went unclaimed.
Thirty-four entries, which included a strong mix of national touring drivers and
regional hotshoes, converged at Paducah International Raceway to kick off the
“4th Annual Tri-Track Challenge”. The “master” of PIR and three-time U.M.P.
National Late Model Champion, Terry English, recorded fast time honors and heat
race winners included Chub Frank, Rodney Melvin, Terry English and Randy Korte.
Using the Tri-Track Frisbee draw for the top 2 finishers of each heat, it was
Joe Morris of Galatia, IL, who started on the pole for the 40-lap main event.
Morris steadily used the low groove at Paducah International Raceway to sneak
past race leader Brian Shirley with five laps to go. The $10,000 Tri-Track
payday was the biggest win to date for the 2000 PIR track champion and his first
national victory.
Morris then trekked to I-55 Raceway on Saturday hoping to beat out the
thirty-five other entrants for Round 2 so he could capture the $10,000 bonus
money. After several showers and a rain delay, the staff of I-55 diligently
worked to save the track and made an awesome racing surface. The ultra-quick
track provided three and four-wide racing all night long. Illinois leadfoot
Randy Korte notched quick time and a heat win along with Billy Moyer, Steve
Sheppard and Joe Morris. Korte had everything to lose when it was time for the
Frisbee draw but his string of good luck continued as he flipped over the disc
with #1 and started the feature from the pole. Korte was fast with no exception
and catapulted to the lead and only faced a little heat from 6th place starting
Shannon Babb before sealing the deal for his ten grand. Korte was followed to
the stripe by travelers Babb, Billy Moyer, Darren Miller and Brian Shirley.
Going in to the final leg of the “Tri-Track Challenge” tour, two driver were
positioned to end the night $20,000 richer if they could win the finale at
Vermilion County Speedway. Morris‚ absence left the door open for Randy Korte to
take top honors in his home state but the thirty-car field once again boasted
some of the best names in the industry. Korte again set the bar during
qualifying and won a heat race along with Shannon Babb, Ryan Dauber and Jimmy
Mars. “King Kong” was positioned to become the only driver other than Babb to
take the bounty but a bauble on lap one resulted in a multi-car pileup. Moyer
commanded the lead but it was “The Moweaqua Missile” and Illinois powerhouse
Shannon Babb that diced his way to the front from his fifth place starting spot
to steal the lead from the polesitting “Mr. Smooth”. Moyer made attempts at Babb
but the 33-year-old Illinoisan cruised to his sixth Tri-Track win with Moyer,
Korte, Dauber and reigning U.M.P. National Champion Rodney Melvin in tow.
All of us at Paducah International Raceway, I-55 Raceway, Vermilion County
Speedway and United Midwestern Promoters would like to thank all of the
competitors, sponsors and spectators who joined us for the “4th Annual Tri-Track
Challenge”. We are looking forward to more Tri-Track excitement in 2007 once
again during the first weekend in June. We look forward to seeing you again soon
during the popular Summernationals’ tour which will visit us at PIR on June
29th, I-55 Raceway on July 1st and Vermilion Co. Speedway on July 2nd.

Pevely, MO (June 3,
2006) Mother Nature did her best to put a damper on the Tri-Track Challenge at
I-55 Raceway, as persistant showers interrupted qualifying three separate times.
The final shower turned into a downpour that lasted 20 minutes and caused a hour
and half delay as track crews reworked the track. The track crews did an
excellent job getting the track back in shape as it was smooth and very fast the
rest of the night.
Thirty-six UMP Late Models signed in to compete for the $10,000 to win Tri-Track
Challenge event at I-55 Raceway. Highland, IL's Randy Korte led all qualifiers
as he set fast time with a lap of 13.287 second. Billy Moyer claimed the first
qualifying heat race with Tim Ratajczyk, Brian Shirley and Ed Dixon also
transferring to the main event from the first heat. The second heat went to
Steve Sheppard over Darren Miller, Jimmy Owens and Jeff Johns. The third heat
was taken by Randy Korte over Shannon Babb, Jimmy Mars and Dennis Erb. The
fourth and final heat win went to Joe Morris over Mark Voigt, Billy Faust and
Danny Haynes. Brian Birkhofer and Terry Phillips took the wins in the two
semi-feature events.
The first and second place drivers from each heat race came out on the track at
the start of the main event and each picked up a frisbee off the track that had
the numbers one through eight on them which would decide how the top eight cars
would line up for the main event. Randy Korte drew the number one starting spot
with the first leg winner of the Tri-Track Challenge Joe Morris picking the
outside front row starting spot.
Randy Korte took command of the event at the drop of the green flag. The
lightning fast surface produced constant two and three wide racing throughout
the entire field. Billy Moyer quickly moved up from his seventh place starting
position and found himself in second place and chasing down Korte after just two
laps. The race went green for the first twenty-two laps of the event as Korte
set a blinding pace and worked lapped traffic three wide as he held Moyer off.
Shannon Babb began his charge from his sixth place starting spot and found
himself in the third spot on lap fifteen and he began running down Moyer.
After the restart on lap twenty-two, Korte opened up a comfortable lead over
Moyer as Babb pressured Moyer for the second spot. Babb would soon take the spot
from Moyer and move in on Korte. Korte worked the lapped traffic flawlessly and
continued to hold a small lead over Babb until the final caution flew on lap
thirty-six. With just four laps remaining on the restart, Korte once again
bolted out to the lead. Babb moved in with just two laps remaining. Babb got
along side Korte in turn two on lap thirty-eight but Korte powered back ahead
down the back stretch. Babb once again moved in on Korte going into turn one on
the final lap, but stumbled in turn two as his car developed a bad push and
Korte powered away to take the win. Babb crossed the line in second place with
Moyer taking third. Darren Miller moved up from the eight spot to claim the
fourth finishing spot and Brian Shirley rounded out the top five.
Bobby Bittle continued his strong season as he picked up the win in the UMP
Modified division. Bittle took the lead on lap three as he moved past Scott
Weber. Jerry Grither moved up through the field and battled with Weber for the
second spot. Grither eventually took over the second position and was able to
move along side Bittle for the lead. But Bittle adjusted his line around the
track and held him off for the win. Weber, who was using the very top of the
track and the deep cushion moved back past Grither on the final lap to claim the
second position. Ricky Horton followed Grither across the line and took the
fourth spot with Ray Wagner completing the top five.
Troy Naeger won his fifth UMP Sportsman feature event of the season at I-55
Raceway. With only one caution on lap two, Naeger was able to pull away to a
convincing win. Paul Bauman took the second position with Chuck Adams coming
home third. Kent Nations and Jeff LeBaube rounded out the top five.
