Critchetts Crowned Illini Champions
Morris, IL (11/17/07) The Jennifer’s Garden, Chicagoland’s premier banquet
facility, was the setting for the 16th Annual Illini Racing Series Awards
Banquet, which saw the Critchett brothers collect the lion’s share of the post
season awards for the Illini Midget Division.
Loran Critchett, Jr., the 2001 driving champion, was honored as the championship
car owner and for his 8th place finish as a driver of the Dave Gass owned #17.
Lamont Critchett was crowned the 2007 driving champion, beating Doug Orseske by
just 28 points. Lamont also picked up the “Quinn McCabe Full Throttle Award”
for his hard charging driving style and dedication to the club. The entire
Critchett team was presented the “Bob Lockard Mechanic Excellence Award” for
their work keeping the #44 car at the front all season, on pavement and dirt.
Wisconsin driver Dan George was named the “Bob Higman Rookie of the Year”, took
home the 4th place hardware, and his 82nd Airborne tribute car was honored as
“Best Appearing Car”.
Jason Dull received the “Determination Award” for his efforts running the same
car in two classes, at two tracks, winning a heat and a feature at Angell Park.
The “Bob Meyers Perseverance Award” would have been presented to late model
stock car driver Scott Koerner, but he had to leave after collecting his 5th
place open wheel awards, so he could attend the stock car banquet down the road.
The “Most Improved Driver Award” was presented to 7th place driver and car owner
Mark Morey, who just finished his second season in a midget.
Doug and Diana Orseske were awarded the “Brett Lovellette Sportsmanship Award”
for their many contributions to the club.
Nearly $6000 in cash and prizes was distributed at the banquet, bringing the
total for the year to over $30,000.
Anderson, Knippel, Findley, Schneider, Brown & Trusky All Win
Morris, IL (9/16/07) The Fifth Annual Bob Corson Memorial was destined to be a
great night of racing with all the work the Corson family put into the effort.
What it ended up being was one of those exceptional nights of great racing,
mixed with a fund raiser for an injured driver, a salute to an 82nd Airborne
trooper home on leave, many drivers doing double duty, a serious thrash on an
out of town driver’s car to get him back on the track, and some of the best
racing of the year.
Jim Anderson qualified the #36 Guess/Anderson national midget car 5th quick
behind Reid Ceponis, Tom Schnabel, Brandon Hartsell, and fast qualifier David
Bryne. When the feature rolled around, nobody had anything for him from the
drop of the green. Anderson led all 30 laps for his third win of the season.
Reid Ceponis won the trophy dash and a heat, with Tom Schnabel winning the other
heat.
The Illini Sportsman Midget 25 lap feature went to Joe Knippel, with fast
qualifier Freddie Teer challenging hard in the final circuits. Knippel also won
the trophy dash with the heats going to Billy Hulbert and newly crowned champ
Lamont Critchett.
Mark Findley set fast time on his way to the feature win in the Rascal Outlaw
mini-sprints. Jim Theil won the heat after qualifying 2nd, and finished 2nd in
the feature.
Luke Schneider won his first BIDCA Classic Modified feature, after playing
second fiddle to Mike Anderson in qualifying and their heat race. Darren Ihrke
won the other heat and finished 3rd in the feature behind Tom Schnabel.
Vern Brown swept the Formula Indy Racing Association competition, setting fast
time, winning the heat and feature. Wally Reitz set 2nd quickest time and was
second in the main, and Tim Roach was 2nd in the heat and 3rd in the feature.
Nick Petska was the fast timer in the Luisa’s Mini-Mods and looked to be on his
way to continue his winning streak that had gone back to the last two races of
last season. Bill Trusky had other ideas though and won the heat an feature,
bring the streak to an end.

Throughout the world of motorsports, families have always been a part of the fabric that holds us all together. Fathers and their children and grandchildren, uncles and aunts, cousins, husbands and wives, stepkids and in-laws. They have all played a part in our rich history of racing. In the Chicago area, one of those families is still going strong, the Corson Clan. As we the approach of the Discount Tire 5th Annual Bob Corson Memorial Race on September 16th, the Illini Racing Series (IRS) thought it might be nice to sit down with the extended Corson family for a few questions about the Corson/Savage racing team and their memories. At this gathering we had Bob’s son, Rich Corson and his wife June and their kids Nicole and R.J., also Bob’s daughter Colleen (nee Corson)and her husband Steve Savage with Colleen's daughter Amanda. IRS: Bob Corson’s name has been associated with midget racing in our area for a long, long time. When and where did Bob begin racing? answer: Actually Dad started racing stock cars at Illiana, Peotone back in the 1950’s. His stock car career didn’t last very long as he told us about how he flipped it several times down the straightaway at Illiana. He got the racing bug again in 1962 when a guy in Posen up the road from us had a midget for sale. It literally was a basket case project except for the frame. Dad and a neighbor put it together and started with UARA in 1962 at Joliet. In 1965 he bought another car and from there it was history. IRS: Rich, how old were you when you went to your first race? answer: Rich – I remember around 9 years old at Joliet Stadium. RJ- Before I was born at Morris IRS: Colleen, how about you? answer: I’m a little bit older than Rich so I was 6. That was a terrible question now you can figure out how old I am. I remember a lot more when I was 9 or 10. IRS: What are your earliest memories of being at a track, and which track? Colleen? answer: Probably Joliet. During the ‘60’s though my Dad raced all over with USAC, BADGET, IMCA, SLARA, really anywhere there was a race because there were always drivers looking to race for him anywhere. Terre Haute, The Prairie, Kokomo, Minnesota State Fair, too many to name. IRS: Same question to you, Rich answer: Joliet Stadium in 1967 when Roger West drove our car. Nicole – When I was little, I remember meeting Rich Vogler at Joliet. IRS: Besides his family supporting him, what do you think Bob Corson was the most proud of in his racing career? His driving, his time as a car owner, or as an innovator? answer: Colleen – That’s a tough question. I’m not sure, he had fun driving especially after he quit and then got back in after a long time. He won the trophy dash at Boswell and having John Lode give him the trophy. He remembered that one pretty well. But overall, I think it was the respect he got from other drivers and owners whether it was from owning a car or having invented something that was widely used. He enjoyed racing and had fun. Steve – I think it was as a owner and innovator. A form of the Dial-A-Jet had been used on Indy cars until last year. Rich – Car Owner and innovator, he loved seeing his cars race and he was always on top of things. Nicole – he was proud to watch Rich race and to see everyone helping out. Rj- as a car owner IRS: Rich, when did you first get the opportunity to drive the family racer? answer: 1979, Joliet Stadium I was co-rookie of the year IRS: Did you ever want to give driving a try Colleen? answer: No, I was happy cheering in the grandstands that was until Rich started racing and then I was in pits trying to help out. IRS: Let’s hear from the in-laws. June, how did you get dragged into being a part of this racing family? answer: by dating Rich, I met Colleen first at Sears 27 years ago. IRS: Steve, your were already involved in racing before you became a part of the team, right? answer: I started watching midgets at the Stadium in the early 60’s. In 1983 I went to watch them again and decided I needed one of these. So I bought my first car and had no clue as to what I was doing. I wrecked, tore up some equipment and got smarter with help from my father-in-law, Rich Vogler and Klaus Wever. IRS: How about Bob’s grandkids? Nicole, you were the first of your generation to become a true pit crew member, meaning old enough to get a pit pass. Was it different to see everyone in the heat of competition? Especially your grandfather, Bob, who always seemed so easy going. Was he that way in the pits too? answer: Nicole – It was neat seeing the joys and frustrations of our team. To see everyone work together. Pat always told Rich to go fast and be upfront. Amanda – I had no choice about racing; I was at the track from the time I was born. The first pit experiences I had were so adrenaline rushing that it inspired me to choose to pursue a career in racing. The people that I’ve grown up with in this racing community are like family to me. Had I not been born into this sport… well let’s just say I don’t dare to entertain that nonsense. IRS: Amanda, how do you remember your grandfather? Amanda – I remember when I was little he would take me in the garage with my uncle while they worked on the infamous blue and white 15. I also remember going to the track every weekend, him driving and that when we’d get to the track he was not only our crew chief but he was a caring family man. Well outside of the track I remember him best; he was the grandfather that took care of me when I was sick, stayed home from the races to take me to cheerleading, above all he was a loving man that would do anything for his family or friends. answer: IRS: O.K. R.J., here is the question everybody wants to know the answer to. Will they ever let you drive a #15 car, or are you just going to be a major league baseball player? answer: When I get older I would like to try it and play major league baseball. But I do wear the #15 on my baseball jersey, Pa’s always with me! IRS: For each of you, what is your favorite racing memory? answers: Colleen – Mine go back aways. I have a lot with both my dad and Rich. With my dad it was probably when he drove at Sun Prairie, he was qualifying and lost it coming out of 4 and almost wiped out Hot Dog the flagman after that he got Billy Wood out of retirement and he finished the night. With Rich there’s a lot there too. Maybe winning at Ft Wayne, or the Lockard Race there’s just too many for both of them. I’m very proud both my dad and my brother and also what they have accomplished racing. Steve – The night Rich raced side x side through traffic with David Thompson with it being the closest race at Grundy County. That was the most exciting race I’d ever seen and we won! Rich – When I won Ft Wayne for the 1st time after my dad passed away. Nicole – When we beat Tony Stewart at Ft Wayne June – When I was 8 months pregnant with RJ, we were at LaSalle running dirt, I was jumping up and down, Rich was winning his semi and the fireman asked me to stop, he didn’t want to deliver RJ there! Rj – Being at Ft Wayne Amanda – The 1st Annual Bob Corson Memorial Race. Our family was approached after my grandfather’s passing and we were told it would be an honor to host a race in his name. It was touching for people to recognize my grandfather for his contribution to racing. I was given the ability to promote and coordinate the race and all of its details; I embraced this race as it was very personal to me to have the racing community come together for remembering my grandfather. That night I was presented a trophy for my work for the race, I was deeply moved by this as I worked very hard to coordinate a race that was would honor my grandfather. Now, I have it at school alongside a picture of me and my grandfather when I was a baby. I miss him and it pushes me to strive harder every year to properly honor his name with this race. IRS: With the change to the Illini Racing Series and Wolverine Outlaw Midget Series co-sanctioning this tribute to Bob Corson, although with familar rules and tires, will the race still draw some drivers from out of town? answer: Rich – Yes, because a lot of people knew and respected my dad. IRS: You guys have done a great job for the last four years with this memorial race. What surprises do you have for us this year? answer: Nicole – you’ll have to wait and see. Amanda – We have a lot of exciting surprises for both the fans and the drivers, the night will be nothing short of spectacular!! IRS: Anything else any of you would like to add? Steve – Bob helped me a lot when I first started and always told me what changes to do that would help me. He also convinced me to run as many different tracks as I could as that would help me both as a driver and car owner so I could learn different setups. I knew Bob long before I knew Rich and Colleen and only knew him as Corson. But if I needed help he was there to lend a hand. Colleen – I want to Thank everyone involved for hosting this race. IRS: Thank you all for your time and sharing your memories with us.
Thanks to everyone who has been inquiring about the Discount Tire 5th Annual Bob
Corson Memorial Race! There seems to be a little confusion about some of the

clarify any questions anyone might have, here are the key points about this

Morris, IL (8/5/07) The Illini Racing Series (IRS) presented
by D’Arcy GMC scheduled for August 5th was cancelled due to rain and very
intense thunderstorms.
It might have been a great night of racing, if we could have finished it off 13
drivers set their fastest qualifying time of the season, including Rich Corson.
Corson converted his car to comply fully with Illini specs, including the 1.25
inch restrictors, and yet still improved his qualifying lap time. Now he will
have to return the #15 back to regional USAC rules and mount up some Hoosiers
for the Bob Corson Memorial.
Doug Orseske overcame an earlier seat belt issue to lead the trophy dash until
turn 4 of the final lap, when a fuel starvation issue caused his #0 to bog down
and giving Corson the win.
The Illini Midgets will return to action Sunday, August 12th at Sun Prairie, WI.
The R.O.R.I. Rascal Outlaw mini-sprints will take to the the track at the
Manitowoc Fairgrounds on August 11th, and back to back dates on September 1st

PETSKA, GILLENTINE, LESAGE AND KNIPPEL WIN AT ILLINI MEYERS
MEMORIAL
Morris, IL (7/15/07) The Grundy County Speedway track conditions made for a
fast night of racing for the 11th Annual Illini Racing Series Bob Meyers
Memorial, presented by D’Arcy GMC. Bob Meyers was the 1989 UMARA champion and
this event is designed to continue to honor his memory, and to increase
awareness of leukemia, the dreaded disease that claimed the life of this
champion.
Qualifying for all four classes soon showed this was going to be a night of fast
racing, with over half the cars setting their fastest qualifying time of the
year, and two classes coming away with new track records.
Nick Petska rewrote the record book by posting a new track record of 17.009 for
the Luisa’s Pizzaria Mimi-Mods. He would finish second in the trophy dash to
Bill Trusky before winning the heat and the feature. Petska’s car proved again
one of those old racing trusims, that “they always run real good...just before
they blow up”. He made it all 20 laps, claiming his third straight feature win
before demonstrating a whole new meaning to internal combustion.
The F.I.R.A. Mini-Indy cars rejoined us after a couple of races at 151 and a
couple more at Rockford, since they last raced with the IRS. At the last visit
to Rockford, Jim Bass sufered injuries that will have him laid up for awhile.
We wish him a speedy recovery.
Neal Gilentine had the same race results as Petska did in the Mini-Mods, nearly
sweeping the class. He set fast time for the third time at Grundy by lowering
his own track record down to 15.274, winning the heat for the third time this
season, and the feature, for his second win of the year. He did not win the
trophy dash, as Lyle Phillips scored his first career trip to victory lane. Oh,
and he didn’t blow the motor either.
The Rascal Outlaw mini-sprints found Mark Findley on top of the timing chart for
the second time this year, but from there on it was all John LeSage. The Elgin
driver won the trophy dash, his heat and the feature. It was the second
straight week LeSage won a heat and the feature.
Lamont Critchett set fast time for the 2nd time of the season, and repeating as
the top qualifier in the Meyers Memorial. Rich Corson won his second straight
trophy dash. Nobody would be surprised if either of these guys went on to sweep
the evening, with Corson winning a week ago in his first IRS race, and this
Critchett brother sitting on top of the points, but it wasn’t to be.
The first heat race was won by Patrick Wilda in the Knippel/Spencer Racing #1
car. It was Wilda’s first Illini start in several years, but his fifth race in
the last two weeks. Lamont Critchett’s night looked like it was coming to an
end, after heavy contact with the turn two boiler plate. Corson was 2nd, the
only two time Meyers winner Doug Orseske took 3rd, followed by Allen Gillis,
Loran Critchett, Jr. and Joe Knippel.
Basil Hicks took his new B&B Automotive/Lucas Oil car to the heat 2 win, with
Scott Koerner in hot pursuit, and Mark Morey in third. Rookie of the Year
candidate Dan George was 4th, in fifth, Mike Adams, Jr. was forced back to his
old car after a fuel leak developed in the new 21A, and Eddie Sauer once again
suffered night ending mechanical problems and did not finish the heat.
Before this night began, Joe Knippel said he would be happy if he could just
finish this event and roll the #33 INR Beatty Lumber car back on the trailer
without facing a week of major work. Knippel had won the season opener, but
crashed in race two, overheated in race three, and blew up in race four. But
those nights spent in the shop paid off. Second quick in qualifying, second in
the dash, and sixth in his heat.
“Smokin’ Joe” would use his usual high line, tire smoking way to the front in
short order, and never looked back. Last week’s winner, Corson, suffered a
broken hub and was unable to start the feature. Visiting driver Wilda, found
his ride faltering with a fuel supply problem which ended his on lap 23.
The next Illini Racing Series sanctioned event is August 5th at Grundy County
Speedway, followed by a return to Angell Park a week later on August 12th.

CORSON COPS CASH, FINDLEY AND PETSKA ALSO WIN AT ADAMS
MEMORIAL
Morris, IL (July 8, 2007) Using his 30 years of midget experience, and a little
help from lady luck, veteran driver Rich Corson became the 44th driver to score
a feature win in the Illini Midgets 16 year history. The win came at the Mike
Adams, Sr. Memorial Race, presented by D’Arcy GMC, last Saturday at Grundy
County Speedway, only fitting as Adams career overlapped Rich’s and his dad’s,
Bob Corson.
Doug Orseske would put the #0 car on the top of the timing charts on this
hottest race night of the year, turning a 16.273. Corson was the next car out,
turning 16.383 on the 1/3 mile oval, good enough for 2nd quick. Several cars
later, Sean Murphy would be 3rd fastest with a time of 16.393, just 1/100th of
a second slower than Corson. Allen Gillis turned an identical time as Murphy,
but since Gillis presented his car for qualifying first, he got the higher
qualifying position.
Why are the Illini Midgets are known for close competition? Because Fred Teer
would be the 5th fast qualifier at 16.395, missing out on the trophy dash by
2/1000’s of a second. Corson would pick up the 4 lap dash hardware, getting an
early taste of victory in his first time out on the track with other cars.
The first Illini Midget heat race looked like Corson’s luck was starting to
change, as he was black flagged for dumping fluid on the track. A problem that
was later traced to a faulty radiator cap, not a blown motor. Teer would win
the heat, followed by Orseske, and Tom Schnabel, also making his first start in
an Illini Midget.
Heat 2 saw Basil Hicks’ new car come out on top with Mike Adams, Jr. second, and
Milwaukee rookie Dan George third. Eddie Sauer would drop out on lap 4 with
problems that would end his night, this after a great 2nd place finish at
Angell Park recently.
The 30 lap feature line-up was dramatic enough, but the race showed why short
track open wheel racing is the most entertaining there is. Jason Dull would
lead the opening laps, until a mechanical gremlin forced him out on lap 9, just
two laps after Orseske took over the top spot. Tom Schnabel left the track a
couple of laps later, deciding that bumpers are no substitiute for brakes.
Corson would take the lead on lap 10, but Teer drove around his high side to
take over position one the next lap. On lap 26, Lamont Critchett made the drive
from his 11th starting position up to 2nd place, also passing Corson on the top
of the track. Teer, Critchett, Corson and Orseske cross the stripe as the white
flag fell, but the finish would reflect something entirely different.
Down the backstraight with half a lap to go, Teer leads everybody into turn
three, but loses control in the middle of 3 and 4. Lamont has nowhere to go,
but manages to come to a stop without touching Teer. Caution is out, but down
the front straight Orseske’s car pops out of gear, and coasts to a stop.
Critchett and Orseske will be able to restart, but at the back of the pack. It
would be a green, white, checker finish, with Corson holding off Hicks, Adams,
and Murphy.
The Mini-Mods and Rascal Outlaws were also on hand for this hot night of hot
racing.
In the Mini-Mods, Jerry Giuliano set fast time at 17.011, a new track record
for the class, and he won the trophy dash. Bill Trusky finished ahead of him to
win the heat, with Nick Petska 3rd, and Petska would go on to win the 20 lap
feature ahead of Guiliano and Jonathan Gagne. More on Mini-Mods can be found
at http://www.minimod1.com.
The Rascal Outlaw Mini-Sprints were fast once again, with Kip Novotny setting
fast time in the #0 at 15.387, and would go on to finish 2nd in the 2nd heat
before a grinding crash took him out of the feature race.
Bill Gundlach took the trophy dash, Rick Corso won the 1st heat, and John LeSage
the 2nd. The 20 lap main was won by Mark Findley, followed by Corso, and Jacque
Terrault, a 1st timer at Grundy County Speedway. For more information, please

Mike Adams, Sr. Memorial Set to be Richest IL Pavement Midget
Race of 2007
Joliet, IL (6/29/07) The First Annual Mike Adams, Sr. Memorial Race will kick
off the Illini Racing Series Speed Weeks with the largest posted purse for a
pavement midget race in Illinois this season. The Sunday night, July 8th, 30
lap race will honor Mike Adams, Sr. who was one of the most successful and
popular regulars of the UARA club, especially at the Joliet Memorial Stadium.
Adams, Sr. lost his battle with A.L.S. (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) late in 2006. He
was able to attend several races last season, and was on hand when his son
(Mike, Jr.) put his Joe Albert #21A into victory lane with his second ever
feature win.
“My Dad understood what the Illini Sportsman concept was all about” said Mike
Adams, Jr., adding “that’s why I wanted this to be the richest race in the
club’s history, to show how much he meant to so many of us. I was shocked and
grateful that so many folks chipped in to make it the richest (pavement) race in
Illinois this season”.
This will be the first pavement race for the Illini Midgets since their
successful debut at Angell Park in Sun Prairie, WI. The winged mini-sprints of
the Rascal Outlaws and the Luisa’s Mini-Mods will also be on the race card.

BELOIT’S BUDRES BEST AT PRAIRIE PREMIER
Sun Prairie, WI (6/17/07) The Illini Midgets wanted to add Angell Park to the
list of tracks they’ve raced at, in fact, it was probably the one track they
wanted most to add. That would explain why the first nine haulers waiting for
the pit gate to open were all Illini teams.
It was a return visit for Joe Knippel and Allen Gillis, who had raced at this
famous dirt track in years past. For Jason Dull and David Budres, it was a
chance to run a different class at the track where they run on a regular basis.
Jason Dull’s pit was right behind the scoring tower where this reporter watched
the evening’s action. Dull’s crew gave new meaning to the word “thrash”. They
missed hot laps, they missed Badger qualifying (doing double duty with the same
car), but they managed to make it out for heat one for the Illini Midgets.
Which they won.
Nobody understands the meaning of racing at Angell Park better than Joe Knippel,
which made his winning of heat race two so meaningful. The battle for second
was classic, with Eddie Sauer edging out Lamont Critchett and Scott Koerner.
David Budres ran into some problems with his Badger ride in the B-Main, flipping
into the inside guard rail on the back straight. He shook it off and climbed
into the #1 car out of the Knippel/Spencer stable for the Illini feature. This
is the same team he won Rookie of the Year honors for a couple of seasons ago.
It was not the same car. The #31 he had so much luck with was destroyed in a
devastating crash at Grundy County Speedway earlier this season. The new car
was assembled in the days leading up to the Father’s Day race. The first laps
it saw were hot laps on race night.
Doug Orseske led the first five laps of the 20 lap A-Main before Budres made his
way to the front. With his Angell Park experience showing, he climbed the
banking to ride the cushion, but Eddie Sauer was able to slip under him for a
couple of laps before the checkered flag eventually did fly first for Budres.

ILLINI MIDGETS HEAD TO SUN PRAIRIE FOR FATHERS DAY RACE
Minooka, IL (6/11/07) The Illini Sportsman Midgets will head for a historic
night of racing at Angell Park in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin next Sunday for a
Fathers' Day special event as part of the Badger Midget Auto Racing
Association's program. Rookie driver Dan George of Milwaukee and Mike Adams,
Jr. of Rockdale will be among the Wisconsin drivers in the field, with more
expected.
Of the Badger regulars on hand last Sunday night at Angell Park, seven have
raced at least once with the Illini Racing Series. Kurt Mayhew, Bob Shreffler,
Jim Fuerst, David Budres, Mike Hess, Jason Dull, and David Gough. Frequent
Angell Park visitor Quinn McCabe is also among our alumni and list of race
winners.
A look to the Illini record book finds that the above mentioned drivers account
for eight fast times, 24 heat race wins, and at least 20 feature races on
pavement and dirt.
This is the first dirt race of the year for the Illini Midgets, which run the
same Mickey Thompson I-Block spec tires wherever the club races. It is also the
first ever appearance of the Illini Midgets at Angell Park. It is the 221st
race in the history of the Illini group, now in it's 16th season of racing. The
historic venue will become the 17th track to host a race, and the fourth in
Wisconsin.
Gillentine Scores 1st Sweep of Year, Petska,
Gundlach and Murphy also Win
Morris, IL (6/3/07) Neal Gillentine became the first driver to score a clean
sweep of the competition this season at Grundy County Speedway. Gillentine
guided his #58 F.I.R.A. Mini-Indy racer to fast time at 15.507, and edged out
Vern Brown in the trophy dash, heat race and feature event. This was the fourth
race of 2007 for the F.I.R.A. group and the fourth different feature winner.
Gillentine may have swept, but it wasn’t easy and the racing was great. More
information on this race and future F.I.R.A. events can be found at
www.formulaindyracing.com
The Mini-Mods made their first appearance at Grundy County Speedway in their
club’s history. Jesse Johnson would set the official track record for the club
at 18.090. Jerry Giuliano won the four lap trophy dash, Bill Trusky took the 10
lap heat race, and Nick Petska was the feature race winner. The club has just
changed their web address, but are having a little trouble with it, so until
that is strightened out, the Illini Racing Series will hold off on publishing
the website’s address. What we can tell you is, these folks come to race!
The Rascal Outlaws (www.rascaloutlaws.com)put on another great race night after
getting off to a rocky start. Jeff LeSage layed his car over in hot laps,
bringing out a red flag. First on the scene was the car #8, driven by Jeff’s
brother John, a paramedic. Jeff was OK, his car was not. Mark Finley set fast
time at 15.528. Rick Corso won both the trophy dash and heat race, but had to
settle for second behind John LeSage in the main.
Joe Knippel came into the night tied for the points lead in the Illini Midgets.
He set fast time at 16.073, finished 2nd in the trophy dash behind Sean Murphy
(in Joe’s back-up car #33X). and won his heat race (heat two was won by Basil
Hicks). But his luck ran out on lap three of the feature when he caught the
rear wheel of Colorado’s Dave Deheve’s car as he was slowing to enter the pits.
As the lead pack came up on him, Joe was working his way up from his outside 4th
row starting position, and using his usual high groove. As Deveve slowed, each
of the cars in front of Knippel swerved, each with less room for error. Running
at full speed, in the range of 100 mph, the time and distance between the nearly
stopped Deheve and the all out Knippel could have spelled disaster. Knippel
grabbed as much brake as he could, but still made hard enough contact to send
him airborn. Neither driver was injured, but neither car was able to continue
either.
The feature also saw contact between race leader Doug Orseske and Lamont
Critchett. Critchett tried to get under Orseske in turn three, but ran out of
race track when Orseske didn’t see him on the inside. Orseske looped the #0 a
couple of times before impacting the wall, ending his night. Critchett would
have to restart the race at the rear of the pack, and managed to make a last lap
pass of Mike Smith to finish second behind race winner Sean Murphy. More
information on the Illini Midgets can be found at www.illiniracingseries.com

a beautiful night of racing. The Formula Indy Racing Association led racing
rotation with Neal Billentine of Sugar Grove, IL setting fast time at 15.941 (a
new track record) in the BK Controls, Inc. #58 owned by John Zeilinga, who he
shares driving duties with. The same car won the season opener this season at
Rockford Speedway.
Four time and defending champion Vern Brown of Waunakee, WI won the 4 lap trophy
dash in convincing style in the Brown Automotive #1. The 10 lap heat race saw
Gillentine in victory lane again.
The 20 lap feature was won by Madison, WI’s Jim Bass in the JB Machining #99,
after catching a good run on a restart. Brown came back strong, but was unable
to run down Bass. More on this group and their point standings can be found at
their website. www.formulaindyracing.com
The Rascal Outlaw Mini-Sprints lit up the timing lights, with 2005 champ Kip
Novotny from Johnsburg, IL blistering a 15.156 (a new track record) in the
Novotny Sales #1. 2005 Rookie of the Year Rick Corso of Richmond, IL took home
the hardware for winning the 4 lap trophy dash.
McHenry, IL’s Bill Gundlach notched a win in the 10 lap heat race, and Novotny
claimed the 20 feature race. Check out www.rascaloutlaws.com for more
information on these winged warriors.
The Illini Midgets started off with Chicago Heights, IL’s Lamont Critchett
setting fast time at 16.036 in the Stapp/VW powered Knight Body Shop #44 owned
by his brother Loran. Critchett would also win the 4 lap trophy dash.
The 10 lap heat races were won by Evanston, IL’s Sean Murphy in the INR Beatty
Lumber Ellis/Quad-4 #33x, with Basil Hicks from Joliet, IL taking the second in
his Lucas Oil Buzzard/Saturn #22.
The 25 feature was barely underway when Frank Reiss got caught up in a turn two
tangle, running over the left rear of Critchett, then barrel rolling dhalf way
down the back straight until he got into the wet infield, which sent him end
over end several more times. Reiss climbed from the car under his own power,
but was taken to the hospital for a CAT scan, which showed no damage and he was
released by 10 pm.
When racing resumed, Joe Knippel of Mokena and Murphy split some of the slower
cars in front of them as they marched to the front. four time and defending
champion Knippel in the other INR Beatty Lumber Buzzard/Quad-4 #33 prevailed to
claim his first win of the season.

SEASON 16 OPENS SUNDAY FOR ILLINI RACING SERIES
Morris, IL (5/35/07) The Illini Racing Series (IRS) presented by D’Arcy GMC of
Joliet, opens it’s 16th season of racing this Sunday night at Grundy County
Speedway in Morris, Illinois. The Illini Sportsman Midgets will headline the
opener, with the Rascal Outlaws mini-sprints making their first appearance with
the IRS on this , the biggest weekend of the year for motorsports.
The Illini Sportsman Midgets pioneered the latest move to mass produced stock
block powerplants to help reduce the rising costs of racing. The first time
this was tried was 60 years ago this weekend, when the United Auto Racing
Association was formed to fight the trend of everyone buying the superior, but
much more expensive Offenhauser engines. That first race was held at Hansen
Park in Chicago, around the high school football field of a stadium.
In 1992 the Sportsman Midgets were born. The famed Kenyon brothers put their
names behind another lower cost class in Indiana. USAC followed nearly a decade
later with the Ford Focus Series, now with 7 regions throughout the nation.
This year, at least two other clubs are starting to run these popular Sportsman
midget racers, with one using the Illini rulebook as their own. While the past
15 years have seen many so-called national (the more expensive kind) midget
clubs struggle and some fail, there can be no denying that 11 clubs running
Sportsman, Kenyon and Focus Midgets in the same time period without one failing,
indicates a trend may have started way back in 1992.
The Illini Racing Series is promoting their own events this season, with six
Sunday nights at Grundy County Speedway, a Fathers Day race at the famed Angell
Park Speedway , a two race swing through Missouri, and the season finale at
Davenport, Iowa. The group is bringing a fan favorite back, the tradional
trophy dash, a four lap race for the four fastest midget qualifiers.
A slight change in the rules for 2007 may see a new track record in qualifying.
breaking the 16.027 mark set by Loran Critchett, Jr. in August of 2000. The
club is offering a $200 bonus to the fastest qualifier on the night the record
may be broken. This was done so not just the first person to break the record
collects, but the fastest of all the qualifiers that night get a shot at the
cash. A driver who sets fast time and wins the feature event, would go home
with $800 for their efforts.
The Rascal Outlaws have raced at Grundy before, but this will be the first time
they have qualified for positions, meaning that they will have a new track
record for sure.
Earlier start times will guarantee an early finish. The IRS hope to have the
show done by 9pm to allow plenty of time for fans, young and old, to visit the
pit area after the races to meet their favorite drivers. The pit gate will open
at 2:00PM, hot laps will start when the front gate opens at 3:30PM, qualifying
will begin at 5:00PM, with the1st race at 6:00PM
With the high price of gasoline, the Illini group has lowered the ticket prices
to make their show more family friendly. General admission is just $5.00 for
adults, 15 and under FREE with an adult, and active military members FREE ( with
I.D.). The center section of the grandstand will also be set aside as the
family friendly area with no alcohol allowed.
The first 300 fans this Sunday will receive a Race Gift Bag full of goodies
courtesy of Spencer’s Jewelry in Shorewood, Illinois.

regulations, only drivers with a current Illini memberships will be allowed on
the track. Officials will have membership forms available on May 5th for
drivers and crew members who haven't filled out one yet. The grandstands will
not be open for the public.
D扐rcy GMC Joins Illini Midgets for 2007
Joliet, IL (3/30/07) One of Illinois' largest dealership groups has teamed
with the Illini Racing Series for 2007. D扐rcy GMC will become the presenting
entity and the series will now be known as the Illini Midget Series presented by
D扐rcy GMC.
D扐rcy has a long association with the Illini Midgets (formerly known as
Sportsman) and is involved with many other family friendly activities
throughtout the Will County area, such as the minor league ball team, Wish Upon
A Star, the Joliet parades, including this Sunday抯 Easter Parade.
The Illini Midgets will be running locally on many Sunday nights at Grundy
County Speedway offering a family friendly $5 adult admission, with children 15
and under admitted free. The center section of the grandstand will be alcohol
free so those families can enjoy a fun family night out.

The Illini Racing Series is proud to announce the addition of two groups of open
wheel racers to their Sunday night line-up. Both of these groups have run the
third mile pavement at the Grundy County Speedway and know how to get around
this track.
The Rascal Outlaws have announced they will be joining the Illini Midgets for
all the Illini scheduled Sunday nights at Morris. Check out their website
http://rascaloutlaws.com.
These winged warriors have been based out of Lake Geneva Raceway, but lost their
home track at the end of last season.
Also joining the Illini Midgets at Grundy County Speedway once a month on Sunday
nights throughout the summer will be the Formula Indy Racing Association
http://formulaindyracing.com. These winged snowmobile powered racers have
been with us before and they put on a great show. They will with us opening
night May 27th, June 3rd, July 15th at the Illini Speed Weeks finale, August
19th, and September 16th.
Schedules will be available at the memorabilia show in the garages of
Chicagoland Speedway this Sunday from 9 am until 2 pm.
Illini Racing Series to Share Space with IRL
Joliet, IL (3/12/07) The 16th Annual Chicagoland Auto Racing Memorabilia and
Collectibles Show will take place at Joliet’s Chicagoland Speedway this
Sunday. The IRS (Illini Racing Series) will be sharing their table at the show
with Nancy Gass who will be on hand representing Downforce, the IRL fan club
with information on the upcoming Indy Racing League season.
The garage area of the famed speedway will again be the site of this year’s
event. Vendors from throughout the Midwest will be on display offering area race
fans a wide variety of auto racing memorabilia and collectibles for their
examination and purchase. The show will feature die cast cars, photos, plastic
models, speedway programs and yearbooks, newspapers, magazines, trading cards
and much more.
In addition to the memorabilia and collectibles part of the show, the event has
become a meeting place for numerous former area racing drivers and champions to
gather and talk about the “good old days of racing” with fellow former
competitors and long time fans, even signing an autograph or two. Last year’s
show drew over a dozen past midget champions, including Danny Kladis, now the
oldest surviving Indy 500 veteran.
The show runs from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and only cost $5.00 for adults and
children, 12 and under, admitted free. If weather permits, there will be a
number of open wheel racecars and some vintage stock cars on display.
MUD, SWEAT AND GEARS! ILLINI RACERS HEAD TO
THE PRAIRIE!
Minooka, IL (3/1/07) The Illini Racing Series is proud to announce a very
special Father's Day race date at Angel Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, WI on
Sunday night June 17th!
Our first 15 years have seen the club race at 15 different tracks, including
three other Wisconsin speedplants, Madison, 141, and Lake Geneva. 18 times
we’ve made the trip to the Badger state, but this will be the first time the
Illini cars have taken to the Wisconsin dirt, and it will be at one of those
famous tracks that is known by a single name, the “Prairie”.
As the only regional midget club that races on both asphalt and dirt, the Illini
combo cars are no strangers to the challenges of dirt racing. Over 10% of the
Illini history has been written in the pages of the history books of LaSalle,
SanteFe, Southlake, Mississippi Valley, Tri-City, Lincoln, Macomb, and Kankakee
Speedways.

Joliet, IL (2/17/07) Shreffler Motorsports
(#21S) and Albert Motorsports (#21A) have announced their annual bowling
fundraiser to benefit both teams. Saturday, March 3rd has been set as the date
and Shreffler adds “You don't have to be a good bowler to have a good time”.
Raffle prizes will include grandstand tickets for Illini Midget Races on Sunday
nights at Grundy County Speedway, donated by the Illini Racing Series (IRS).
Other great prizes include electronic items, food and beverage certifiicates,
apparel and more.
Anyone who would like more information, or to donate a door prize, give Bob
Shreffler or Joe Albert a call at (815)439-7684 (home) or (815)474-8129 (cell).
Morris, IL (2/3/07) The Illini Racing Series
2007 Season Kick-off Meeting drew nearly 100 drivers, car owners, crew members,
support staff, and officials from Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin to learn about
the exciting plans for the Sportsman (now Illini) Midgets. So many people have
shown an interest in this class of racing in recent weeks. One of the club
founders and a current club owner, Jerry Murphy said “In 1992 four go-karting
friends developed a set of formulas to breathe life into midget auto racing in
the Chicagoland area. What we came up with became known as the Sportsman
Midgets and a new term, “national midgets”, was coined to describe the midgets
who run what is basically the USAC rule book with local variations.”
15 years, 216 races at 15 tracks in five states later, the group now known as
the Illini Midgets (illiniracingseries.com) have strived to keep the costs of
racing at a reasonable level. The club has announced part of the 2007 schedule,
payout, annual rules adjustments and the new fan friendly policies for their
races at Grundy County Speedway in Morris.
“The Grundy races will pay at least as much as many national group races, the
center section of the grandstand will be an alcohol-free zone for families,
spectator admission will be rolled back to $5 with kids 12 and under admitted
free, and any active military member will be our guest” said another of the club
founders and owners LaVerne Spencer.
Seven Sunday dates are locked in at Grundy on May 27th, June 3rd and 24th, July
15th, August 5th and 19th, and September 16th, with an additional 10 dates at
seven more tracks and a November 17th Illini Championship Banquet being planned
by Joe Knippel, the third club owner.
The Illini Midgets were forced to establish an independent schedule after the
group they used to race with launched an effort to takeover the group and a
total rewrite of the rules that have kept costs down and made this club
sucessful for so long. Chris Economacki spoke of the spiralling cost of racing
in his book “Let ‘Em All Go”. He wrote ”But how do you control this? That’s
the job of every sanctioning body. Somehow, get a handle on how to control the
costs. A sanctioning body can mandate length, width, weight, height, engine
displacement, and any number of things. But it can’t mandate how much money a
car owner can spend on his or her team.”...”But your goal should be to minimize
the advantage of spending.” That has always been, and will continue to be the
objective of the Illini Midgets.

Illini Midgets Announce New Rules and Purses
The 15 year old Illini Midgets (“Sportsman” until 2006) today announced a new
rule and purse structure.
Board member Doug Orseske said, “We have had 15 years of low-cost, yet extremely
competitive racing thanks to limiting horsepower, weight-trimming, and tire
expense through stringent intake area, overall weight, offset and tire rules.
We are now taking a few risks by taking the program to another level. These
risks of modifying a successful program come about through our desire to
increase car-count while emphasizing driver talent and preparation rather than
‘cubic money’. We were able to ‘pilot’ some changes in several of our dirt
shows last year, and in view of their success, we are building on them for both
dirt and pavement this year.”
Another Director, 1993 champion Rich Peceniak continued, “The group’s intent is
simple – maximize competition and minimize cost, while respecting traditions.
We hope to have a purse that will make it possible for a competitive racer to
meet his expenses for the night. This has been rare if not impossible in Midget
racing for years. We will attempt this while remaining in the spirit and intent
of our cost-limiting tire, intake restrictor, weight and offset rules. However,
the rules have been updated to permit most midgets built up to the current day
to run in our programs with minimal, quick, and extremely inexpensive
modifications. By making these changes, it is our intent to increase car-count
by making it easy to run under other club’s rules, yet be able to quickly change
over to our rules. If we have done our homework properly, even if a “big buck”
midget comes to play, a well prepared and driven local car with literally a
junkyard motor and 15 year old chassis should be able to put on a show running
against such a “cost is no object” racer.”
A 3rd Director, Rich Spohnholtz added “In combination with this, we are
instituting a major change in our pavement purse structure. Previously, we used
a virtually flat and very modest pay-out. To make it feasible on a given night,
if you run well, to ‘break even’ on nightly expenses versus purse, we are vastly
increasing our pay-out. We hope to make this financially viable through
minimizing staff expenses in combination with an aggressive, family oriented
spectator program meant to draw some new as well as many old fans. How feasible
this will be over time is an open question, but we have sufficient sponsorship
to ensure a good start on being able to pay our intended pavement purse for the
season. Rest assured, if it becomes necessary to lessen the purse, it will be
done with at least a full-week’s advance notice so that no one tows to the show
under false pretenses.”
Glenn Windstrup, consultant to ILLINI MIDGETS said in closing “So there you have
it. We are committed to low cost competition. We are committed to minimize the
advantage of spending ungodly sums on what should be a test of driver and
preparation skill instead of a test of bank accounts. We may make a mis-step or
two, but we have an excellent track record of balancing out competition these 15
years, and are ready to react and change rules to equalize things as shown to be
necessary. Accordingly, some of what we do will be “provisional”, yet we will
be consistent and fair in our management of rule changes, if necessary, as we go
along. We hope to see new faces, and even some old ones that maybe we’ve riled
in the past. It’s a new time, and a new approach. We will rise or fall on our
ability to deliver on our commitment to driver and mechanic ability much more
than financial ability. That sounds like a new era to us, and we intend to give
it a shot.”
