After reprieve, Farmer City plans $20,000 race

From our friends at DirtonDirt.com

Farmer City (Ill.) Raceway recently received a two-year reprieve from plans to shutter the track following the 2008 season. Now the track is making plans for the biggest event in the history of the track, and perhaps the richest Dirt Late Model event ever in Illinois.

On Oct. 30, a two-year lease was signed by the City of Farmer City and the Farmer City-DeWitt County Fair Association to extend the association's use of the city-owned fairgrounds through the 2010 racing season.

"You hate to see any tracks close, from either side of it, as a promoter or a racer," said Don Hammer, who enters his fourth season promoting the quarter-mile track in 2008. "Everybody around here, everybody wants the long-term deal so they don't have to think about it. ... but all the drivers are glad that at least we have two more years than we had."

With the future still in doubt, Hammer doesn't plan on "investing a ton of money" into one of the longest-running United Midwestern Promoters-sanctioned tracks, he said in a Nov. 8 phone interview, but Hammer plans to improve the track's "crow's nest" area for officials along with other odds and ends.

Where Hammer is making big plans is regarding the track's 2008 schedule. He's working out details on a $20,000-to-win Dirt Late Model event that would open the track's season in early April. "There's not much going on the first of April, kind of start up with a bang," Hammer said. "I think it'll be the biggest race the state of Illinois has ever had, actually."

Details should be worked out so the two-day event can officially be announced in a few weeks, Hammer said. In 2007, Farmer City hosted two $10,000-to-win events. Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, Ill., won an April 27 World of Outlaws Late Model Series event and Brady Smith of Solon Springs, Wis., won a July 13 UMP Summernationals event.

The track's future was in doubt when negotiations regarding the 49-acre plot bordering I-74 began in the summer of 2006. In the spring, negotiations that included a potential land swap between the city and fair association fell through and it appeared the track would close following the 2008 season.

The two-year extension is a stop-gap measure, but Hammer and fair officials hope that upcoming city council elections could swing more support for keeping the fairgrounds and racetrack intact. The city has plans to develop the property after the lease expires. — Todd Turner

Farmer City Recap 09/14/2007
Thanks to DeeDee for the report
Congrats to 15K Justin Kay (Track Champ at Cedar Co. Raceway in Tipton IA, read this on Google) on winning the Hornet Nationals 50 lap race tonight at Farmer City. He took home the $1500 cash. I have to say great job to 11E Matt Turley who finished 2nd as he led the first 35 laps of this big race but Justin Kay had the 15K car flying on the high side and was able to take the lead and stay there with 15 to go in this caution filled 50 lapper. Also great job to Joe Reed who started the race at the back after qualifying through a semi feature and finished 3rd in the feature. Geno Kalb(SP) finished 4th.

There were 72 hornet cars and 6 heats. 33 started the feature and they started 3 wide in 11 rows. There was one complete restart and then a nasty looking multi-car wreck on the backstretch about 2 laps in. Two cars made a really hard hit and thankfully both drivers walked away. One driver did walk over to the ambulance but it never left so I am assuming he was ok.

Before the recap continues I have to say I watched the races from the comfy confines of my Chevy Equinox in turn 2 with two 4 year olds, a 6 year old, and a DVD player playing Charollette's Web and Over the Hedge at full volume. So, if I screw up someones name you will now know why. Check out www.farmercityraceway.net for official results.

The six hornet heats with 12 cars in each heat finished like this. Heat 1 Matt Turley 11E winner followed by David Reed, Larry Hawk, and J. Osborne. Heat 2 15K Justin Kay winner followed by Randy Ewing, Stacy Whitehouse, and #116. Heat 3 in this one Joe Reed took the lead and then slowed to a stop on the front stretch and was pushed off the track. Bob D #99 wins, followed by Mike Stevens, Tyler Wells, and Jim Starks. Heat 4 Geano Kalb (SP) #92 wins followed by Lieberman (sp), Donovan Starks, and Craig Keys?? Heat 5 was won by Nick Lee 12, followed by Tracey ? #20, Dustin Walden 63, and Nick ? # 52. Heat 6 was won by David Jones and Jeremy Groves got 2nd.

There were 3 hornet semis with the top 3 going to the big race. EJ Gregory 3won the first heat followed by Brad Rexroat 911 and Jim Wilson 47. Semi 2 was won by Johathon Shuck 30, I believe they said Bonnie Reed, and a Scott #D28. In hornet semi #3 Joe Reed started last and raced through the field to finish 2nd at the line to the winner Ryan Retter, Jerry Benn.... was 3rd.

In the Modifieds, Jeff Leka set a new track record in qualifying! Unfortunately I missed the time it was either a 13.9 or a 13.2. I don't know whole lot about the modifeid races but here is what I do know. Jeff Leka won the first heat after an awesome battle for the lead with Denny Schwartz. Schwartz finished 2. A # 01 car won the 2nd heat, don't know who won the 3rd heat, and Cory Schwengel I believe won the 4th heat. There were 2 semis for the modifieds and Jeffery Leka kept the Leka's in victory lane by winning one of them and Darcy Wey won the other one. Jeff Leka won the feature followed by Denny Schwartz, Roben Huffman and Brian Lynn.

The street stocks had 3 heats. Heat 1 had 9 cars and 1 caution, Scott Thrasher won followed by Darrell Beckham, Greg Brewer, and David Awe. Heat 2 had 7 cars and was full of fast ones. Troy Dodson led at first with Josh Griffith in 2nd, Griffith spun in turn 4 and headed to the back. There was another caution with 4 to go and in the end Steve Ewing won followed by Troy Dodson, Terry Miller and Chris Tackett. Heat 3 had 7 cars and one caution with 3 to go. In the end Jim Quinn in the 82 car won followed by Shane Garrison and Greg Rubenecker.

There was supposed to be a street stock semi with 4 cars going to the feature but since only 5 cars showed up they all got to go. It took one hour to run the street stock and sportsman features as they were both caution fests. The street stock race also appeared to have a few cars trying to do everything possible to take other cars out. It was a wild one. There was one complete restart and 4 cautions in the first five laps. When everyone finally figured out they were there to race Steve Ewing had the lead with Terry Miller and Jim Quinn following. There were more cautions and in the end the number 9 Terry Miller car had the high side figured out and passed Steve Ewing for the win, Quinn was 3rd.

There were 3 heats of Sportsman Timmy D-ick won the first heat, Greg Kimmons won the second heat and after a scary moment in the 3rd heat when Andy Clark rolled the #50 car in turn 1 (driver OK) Darrell D-ick won the shortened heat race. There was a fuel spill as a result of the flip which took a while to clean up. As I said the sportsman feature was long and caution filled in the end Greg Kimmons won followed by Joel Funk, Al Crowder, Billy Nail and Bauman.

There was supposed to be a powder puff tonight and to be truthful it was the main reason I went. We had several visitors on the bus to watch the 82 car in the powder puff and we spent weeks pumping up the driver only they scheduled it for the end of the night and ran out of time with the 11:30 curfew. This was frustrating to say the least I thought they should have done it at the intermission break during the semi's but it was scheduled for the end of the night and there was no time.

That was the only disappointment of the evening though. It was a fun night at the track and I am very sad that the season is over. Cograts again to the 2007 Track Champs Bull, Leka, Kimmons, Quinn, and Reed and to Justin Kay on taking home the big cash tonight.
