Jon "Catman" Mitchell Named AMP Points Champion; Preps For USMTS At Houston
(Texarkana, Texas) The "Catman" Jon Mitchell wrapped up his second consecutive
AMP Late Model Series Championship back in October, but with the series just
recently announcing the points order, the announcement can now be made official.
The Two Time AMP Champion is preparing for this weekend's USMTS finale at
Houston Raceway Park, where he will pilot his black, red, and white #5 GRT by
Catman open wheel modified on December 3-5, 2008, with the main event paying
$2,000 to win on Thursday, with $3,000 earmarked for Friday's winner and $4,000
to win on Saturday according to the USMTS Website
www.USMTS.com
Mitchell is happy with how his season went, and is looking forward to the 2009
season, where he plans on starting out at the Ice Bowl in Tuscumbia Alabama in
January.
"We had a really good season again this year." said Mitchell "It is always
exciting to win a back to back championship, and this will help set the bar for
our 2009 season. We will be running two cars in 2009, and we are waiting to see
how everyone's schedules look before committing to anything, but we are looking
at running more races next year."
Mitchell finished the season with 5 wins in his Super Late Model, 2 wins his
Open Wheel Modified, and numerous Top 5's in both cars.

THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER ARE HERE AND ITS TIME FOR AMP SERIES TO GO TOPLESS
AMP Series Release
501-920-2677
Alexander, ARK—August 05, 2008
The dog days of summer are here and with the temperatures rising, the AMP drivers are planning on going topless at Monticello Speedway this Saturday night August 9th.
As race fans gather around the clay oval pumped for some sizzling racing action, the Super Late Model Teams will remove their tops and battle for 40 laps with the winner taking home $3000.00 payday, and the fans getting
an up close and personal glimpse of the drivers in the cockpit.
This embarks the second year for the Topless 40 event at Monticello for the AMP Series. Last years winner Jon “Catman” Mitchell, found winners lane to his liking when he charged 40-Laps for a $2000.00 victory. This year Barry Smith of Smith Recovery, Minden, LA has graciously increased last year’s payday of $2000 to $3000. Anyone of the AMP teams can be considered “in the hunt” to take home the increased payday including Mitchell who will try and hold on to the title and the cash.
This will be the AMP Series third visit back to the Speedway this season and racers look forward to again giving the four wide salute of thanks to the many race fans that swarm the Monticello Speedway to support them. Several race teams will be in hot pursuit for victory lane while providing an outstanding show and another one you will not want to miss.

AMP Series Release
July 16, 2008
Alexander, Ark--The Stars of the AMP Series along with local racers will give their total effort from 'arrival' to 'departure' this weekend as the teams head to Greenville Mississippi where they will compete with the SUPR Series.
The friendship of many and good competition by all, will surround one of the best facilities located in the delta of the Magnolia State. You will see each teams commitment regardless of size, as each racer will give their total effort while competing in this special event. Race fans can expect to witness teams from as far away as four states this Saturday night, July 19th
There is no better place to be than at a race track where you can relax and witness the excitement of dirt late model racing. Your heart will start pounding as you hear the sound of thunder and feel the earth shake from the roar of an 800 hp engine. What is amazing, this is just the beginning of what you can experience as AMP and SUPR come together for a night of racing action.
All drivers in attendance appreciate the fans and staff of Greenville Speedway and will show their gratitude for their support to dirt late model racing by respectfully giving them a four wide salute as a means of saying thank-you. Then the light will go out and the drivers will pull up on their wheel as the next lap will bring out the green flag, a visual sign to break out the $2500.00 headhunter chase to the finish line.
The commitment of each racer to do their best will be obvious to the spectator as the race will unfold. Drivers play an inspiring roll to the audience which will entice you to want to join the racing scene either by trying driving yourself or as an addicted fan.
If you have never witnessed the enthusiasm of a late model race, then I challenge you to come out and see why the teams competing will grab your attention through their remarkable abilities to move a 2000 lb machine not only around an oval track, but around 20 plus of their fellow competitors on any given race night. Alexander, ARK- (July 13, 2008) Racing action heats up this Saturday night as two of the south’s touring series invade the Greenville Speedway
Racing will get kicked off this Saturday night, July 19th as drivers make their way to a $2,500 to win 50-lap feature event as the Arkansas Motorsport Professional Series (AMP Series) Challenge the talents of drivers from the Southern United Professional Racing Series (SUPR Series) on the Gumbo banks in the heard of the Delta.

MITCHELL SWEEPS AMP DOUBLE HEADER WEEKEND
Wendy Bohonek
AMP Series Press Release
www.ampseries.com
June 08
Anticipation was in the air as haulers began arriving at Central Arkansas Speedway, Plummerville AR. If Saturday's show was going to be anything like the night before at Beebe Speedway, the fans were in for a real treat. Joining the field for the AMP event was Kevin Fike, Collierville TN and Stormy Deeryberry, Monticello AR. Regular AMP drivers, Andy Hockenhull and Rachel York were on hand to help support their fellow comrades even though they were unable to compete themselves due to mechanical issues from Friday's event. After the previous night of excitement the drivers and fans were pumped and ready to make some noise.
Once the dust settled from nineteen late super late models taking a few hotlaps, drivers made their final adjustments to the car, and the heat racing action got underway. Each of the three heat races brought with them a good mixture of new and experienced talent. Jeff Wells Jr, Trumann AR, Ian Samuel, Trumann AR and Billy Moyer Jr, Batesville AR, were the young guns who finished one, two, and three in the first heat.
Jon Mitchell, Texarkana TX and Kyle Beard, Trumann AR started the evening out where they left off the night before, racing for the first and second positions, while Charlie Cole, Marianna AR who has demonstrated some strong runs as of late, was right there with the leaders for a third place finish to put in the books.
Jon Kirby, Russellville AR, teammate Dwaine Hottinger also from Russellville, with Shane Diamant, Maumelle AR tore it up with the hammer down to end the heat races for the evening.
With the feature race just getting started, the cars entered turn one after the initial drop of the green flag and they were already three wide. Yep! I smacked my lips, Beebe brought the appetizer and main course, and Central was serving up the desert, we were going racin! Wells Jr, Kirby, and Beard were still three wide as they came out of turn three. Once they settled down to a perfect rhythm it was Mitchell out front with Kirby, Wells Jr, Beard, Hottinger, Moyer Jr and Gary Scott Christian making up the top six positions. Mitchell began to pull away from the group when the first caution came. Charlie Cole pulled into the infield, removed the hood of his #2 machine and was forced to call it a night. On the restart Samuel, Tippen, Diamant, Henson, Fisher, Murry, Deeryberry, Leal and Skinner who made up the rest of the field, were ready to contend with the top six leaders. After a few laps Mitchell again starts to pull away from the group, while Kirby, Beard, Wells Jr, Moyer Jr, Hottinger, and Christian fall behind in single file. This drew our attention to the racing battle going on in the middle of the pack as Tippen, Diamant, and Samuel exchange the lead and a little paint as they work for the eighth through tenth spots. The next group of hard chargers were Henson, Fisher, and Murry who were putting on a good show as they attempted to move forward. Once the leaders hit lap traffic, Beard was able to get around Kirby, but Mitchell had command and had gained a comfortable lead. The second caution of the evening came with mechanical woes for Terry Henson, but he wasn't alone, Tippen and Hottinger left the field with their own mechanical issues. On the restart Mitchell with his foot on the gas puts some distance between himself and Beard. Kirby, Wells Jr, Moyer Jr, and Christian again fell in behind in a single file fashion as Diamant was able to get around the 86B of Ian Samuel after a little back-n-forth racing between themselves and Clay Fisher adding to the mix. With the exception of Wells Jr getting alittle loose and sideways between turns three and four, but regaining control and holding on to his fourth place, the last few laps were uneventful. As the dust swarmed it was Jon Mitchell in his #5 GRT by Catman who able to have his cake and ice cream too, as he sweeps the weekend by winning both AMP events. Mitchell, who has won the last three AMP events, under went a post race inspection was found to be legal. Not only was it nice payday weekend for Jon, he is now leading the AMP point standings. You may want to keep a close eye on the AMP point standings by visiting the AMP website, because the drivers will be in action again next weekend with a double header and who knows how the points will shake down. If you are hungry for some great racing, come out and see the AMP drivers, you will leave satisfied and full!

AMP Series Press Release
June-08
The AMP race held at Beebe Speedway, Beebe AR lived up to its advertised title and more. With temperatures reaching the mid 90's in the area, twenty-one super late model drivers pulled the belts a little tighter as they geared up for thier heat race action. With two and three wide, down to the wire racing, we were served with an appetizer that was sure to lead to an exquisite main dish.
Heat one action saw AMP points leader Allen Tippen, Minden LA and Rookie of the Year contender Jeff Wells Jr, Trumman AR battle for the top finishing spot with two laps to go, while close behind “Charging Charlie” Cole, Marianna AR and Clay Fisher, DeWitt AR were taking care of business and moving forward. Veteran driver Wayne Skinner, held his own as well as Rachel York, Southhaven MS, as they finished fifth and sixth respectivly.
Heat two got underway as another loaded field made their way onto the track.Tommy Surrett gained an early lead with Jon Mitchell, Texarkana TX hot on his heel.
As they challenged each other Shane Diamant, Maumelle AR began to reel them in, and when the leader Surrett bobbled between turns three and four, both Mitchell and Diamant were able to get around him. Diamant took a little ride through the infield as he challenged Mitchell for the lead while crossing the start finish line, but held on, and finished second to Mitchell. Surrett was able to gather himself up finishing third, and brought hard charging Terry Henson, N Little Rock and Ian Samuel, Trumann AR with him.
Heat three brought to the table a mixture of the very young in Dalton Alexander to the seasoned Dewaine Hottinger, Russellville AR, with a mixture of the established talent of Kyle Beard, Trumann AR, Billy Moyer Jr, Batesville AR, and Jon Kirby, Russellville AR, all hungry and ready to devour the 1/4 mile track. Beard took command of the lead with Hottinger close behind as Kirby and Moyer Jr ran side by side all the way to the finish line where I am glad that I didn't have to make the call of who crossed the line first it was that close.
There was only a moment to catch your breath, as the drivers in heat four were on the track and making the dirt fly again. Gary Scott Christian, Broken Arrow OK took the number one spot as Allen Murry, San Antonio TX fell in behind. Christian and Murry pulled away from the pack as the trio, Mike Leal, Andy Hockenhull, Conway AR, and Kenny Basco, Malvern AR fought for the same piece of real estate. The eight words of "We are HUNGRY and the HEAT IS ON!, would have easily summed up the heat race action, but what is fine dining without a great appetizer? When it was time for the main dish to be served I didn't pull up my normal chair in the stands, but rather, was given the opportunity to dine in the infield.
The main event was served up in AMP fashion with driver introductions, command to start engines, and the four wide salute to the fans. With the caution light out, the original AMP flagman Will Essex dropped the green flag and we soon found ourselves elbow deep in some finger licking good racing. Mitchell, Beard, Diamant, and Tippen mixed it up for the top four spots and began to pull away from the rest of the field, while Hottinger, Wells Jr, Moyer Jr, Cole, and Henson grouped together to battle for the fifth thru tenth spots. Watching the race from the infield one gets an interesting taste of how much upper body work these drivers do as they manuver through the turns. I was also privy to a sneak peak of Gary Scott Christian's character after an early caution which brought him into the infield via the hook. While they worked on his car to get him off the hook, and sheet metal adjusted, Christian held his cool, let them do what they needed to do, and didn't hesitate to speed off leaving a wake of dust just in time to rejoin the field as the racing action resumed. Kyle Beard also showed good character by not giving up when spun out while running in the second postition, went to the back of the pack, and rebounded with a ninth place finish. As the laps quickly passed by it was all Jon Mitchell who held his line and sailed past the flag stand as the double checkers flew. As always, when I am a guest of the AMP family, I leave the track satisfied and well feed with some of the best racing there is in the area.

May 17, 2008 Monticello Hosts the AMP Regulars for the 1st Annual Kenneth Mitcham Memorial Race
With the track rolled in, and hot laps completed, it was time for the AMP heat races to get underway. As each heat race finished, the fans were given an early indication of how strong the field of competition was going to be for the 16 Late Models that would later make up the 30 lap Kenneth Mitcham Memorial Feature event.
Out of the bull pen first leading all 10 laps of his heat race was AMP 2007 defending Champion Jon “Catman” Mitchell. Mitchell had some close company in tow as the 2007 Rookie of the Year, Kyle Beard, and the current AMP points leader Allen Tippen charged in a one-two-three succession across the start finish line to get the evening heated up.
Next on the track was “Charging Charlie” Cole whose strong run was able to duplicate the previous heat race and he to led all ten laps. As Cole saw the checkered flag, he brought with him the March 30th defending Monticello AMP Feature winner Jeff Chanler, and well known local driver Doug Showah.
With two heat races down and one to go, the third heat raced, proved to be a triple hitter. Jody Prince, Sibley LA, led all ten laps followed by a fellow statesman Mark Andrews, Marion LA, and “The Rocket” Terry Henson of North Little Rock AR. As the dust settled and the engines were briefly quieted, the fans were able to catch their breath and begin to ponder their stacked and packed feature line-up.
Feature races are always started with the past, and “the past” is usually from a short time ago, a result of a heat race, and within the same night. For tonight’s race we went a little further into the past, to last year’s season, to get things started. The first two cars to make their way onto the field were two modified cars. These cars were the honorary pace cars for the Kenneth Michem Memorial Feature Race and were being piloted by Mitchem’s nephew and son-in-law. A tribute about Kenneth was read to his family and fans. As part of the ceremony Monticello Speedway also extended sympathy to the Mitchem family with a bouquet of flowers that were placed on the back of one of the pace cars in memory of Kenneth’s father who passed away last week. Although the racing community is passionate about some good ole fashion, fender rubbing racing, they are just as compassionate to remember and honor those that they have lost due to the sport they are a part of. Once the driver introductions and the four wide salute led by Mitchem’s family was complete, the fans were on their feet, and the drivers were ready to honor a fellow competitor and friend by doing what they know and love most race.
At the drop of the green flag the race was on. As 16 cars flew past the flag stand and made their way around the track, Jon Mitchell would be the one out front to lead the first lap. Doug Showah would hit hard on a retaining tire on lap two to bring out the first caution, do damage to his car and ultimately end his night. Mitchell led the first four laps with Beard, Chanler, Tippen, and Cole rounding out the top five. On lap five Beard would get around Michell and take the lead as the remaining three drivers mixed it up some but continued to hold onto the top five spots.
Beard would lead the next eleven laps. Mitchell would reach the bumper of the eighty-six but was unable to get around him until lap twenty-four when Mitchell slide around Kyle for the lead and held on to bring home the checker flag, with Beard finishing second.
As Beard and Mitchell raced for the first two spots the rest of the field was busy as well. The man on the move was Arkansas driver Mike Bowers who by lap eleven moved from his tenth starting spot up to sixth. After a caution on lap twelve, the restart proved eventful for Jeff Chanler. Chanler who restarted fourth dropped below the cone and was penalized and forced to move to the rear of the field. This put the defending feature race winner on an up hill battle, but he forged through and was able to bring home a eighth place finish. Tippen moved into the third position which he had command over since lap four, held it to the finish. Bower’s was able to get around Cole and would take home a fourth place finish for his efforts. Cole was able to hold off Andrews, Henson and Taylor as they mixed it back-n-forth for fifth place bragging rights. Terry Henson who had another great night brought it home in sixth, while Taylor finished seventh. Mark Andrews and Clay Fisher rounded out the top ten. Rookie of the Year contender Jeff Wells Jr finished eleventh, Andy Hockenhull finished twelfth, and Rachel York who had an ill handling car was able to finish in the thirteenth spot. Wells Jr, Hockenhull, and York make up three of the seven drivers who are qualified for the AMP 100% Bonus Award along with Tippen, Mitchell, Beard, and Fisher, making it a profitable night in more than one way.

BEARD FINDS THE HIGH GROOVE TO HIS LIKING DURING FRIDAY NIGHTS AMP FEATURE RACE AT BEEBE SPEEDWAY.
Kyle Beard #86 AMP Series
Beard finds the high groove to his liking during Friday nights AMP feature race at Beebe Speedway. Starting 20th position in the pack, Kyle Beard had his work cut out for him, if he wanted to make his presence known. He began his charge to the front by holding his #86 GRT by Frye, Samuels Performance Engine tight on the inside groove of Kenny Morden’s ¼ mile dirt oval. The inside groove proved to make him some headway, but when he decided to give the outside cushin a try he found the sweet spot that enabled him
to begin picking off his fellow competitors at a steady pace. Grabbing the crowds attention he soared around the topside of the track with lightning speed. As he passed the
leader the fans responded with clapping and cheers, and continued to honor the young gun from Trumann AR as he climbed out of his car in victory lane.
Beard wasn’t the only driver to have a successful evening. AMP points leader Allen Tippen ran among the top three spots throughout the entire race and finished a close second behind Beard. Jon “Catman” Mitchell brought his GRT by Catman home with a third place finish after running among the top five all evening. Ronnie Adams of Longview Texas earned a respectable fourth place finish. While Russellville’s favorite driver Dewaine Hottinger took home the fifth place honors. The well-known driver of the #TEN machine Mike Bowers, of Little Rock placed sixth. Terry Henson of North Little Rock had his career best finish of the season as he crossed the start finish line in the seventh place. “Kid Smooth” Billy Moyer Jr had a good points night to add to his fifth place spot in the AMP points standing by finishing eighth. The #2 Flying C Ranch sponsored car of Charlie Cole ran another consistent race bringing home a 9th place finish, and the 5W machine of Johnny Waters, Harrisburg AR rounded out the top ten.

Racers for Christ bring inspiration to the AMP Series
Racers
for Christ, a non-for-profit organization that was established in 1971 to meet
the emotional and spiritual needs of those among the motor sports community,
will serve along side the drivers and motor sports teams of the AMP series.
During the state of Arkansas kick-off race at Monticello Speedway, Racers for
Christ, Chaplain Steve Haynes was introduced to the AMP family during the
drivers meeting. Haynes, a long time friend of AMP President Christy Hudson,
appeared to be the perfect fit as the newest member of the AMP community.
His
warm and bubbly personality was revealed as he explained to the drivers that
when adhering, the RFC fish logo to their cars they needed to make sure they
didn’t put it on backwards because the gills would only slow them down. Hudson
states, “Steve who is the owner of Steve’s Speed Shop in Little Rock AR, has
spent many hours devoted to race teams not only in his business endeavors but
has been supportive and inspirational to her family and many others in the
central Arkansas area.”
“I
would like to thank AMP member Mike McNay for his assistance in bringing Steve
aboard.” “We are proud to have Steve and Racers for Christ joining our team to
bring fellowship, prayer, and pastoral care to the teams of AMP as they compete
in and around the state of Arkansas.” For more information on Racers for Christ

AMP Series under goes new Point System Race Format during 2008
To qualify for points, racers must of competed in 80% of all scheduled events.
Racers that run for AMP Series points that compete in 100% of scheduled events will receive $500.00 bonus at season ending awards banquet.
AMP Series 2008 point format
Drivers will draw for heat race line-up position at time of
registration. The number of heat races run will be determined by the
number of entries. Drivers will earn finishing points for their
position at race's end, and passing points (1 1/2 per car) for each car passed.
The driver will receive points only for cars passed that take the
green flag. A car that fails to start the race will not be considered
passed.
The total of these two points will be used to determine qualifying for
the Feature Race. The top 14 in passing points will qualify for the
Feature race. The balance of the field will line up in one or two
(depending on the number of entries) conciliation races that will
transfer 4 cars to the feature to make a field of 18 and two
provisional starters.
AMP will start 20 cars unless otherwise stated/posted at
track.
Passing Point Schedule
Finishing
Position Points
Awarded Passing
Points
1 55 1 car @ 1 1/2 = 1 1/2 pts
2 52 2 cars @ 1 1/2 = 3 pts
3 49 3 cars @ 1 1/2 = 4 1/2 pts
4 46 4 cars @ 1 1/2 = 6 pts
5 43 5 cars @ 1 1/2 = 7 1/2 pts
6 40 6 cars @ 1 1/2 = 9 pts
7 37 7 cars @ 1 1/2 = 10 1/2 pts
8 34 8 cars @ 1 1/2 = 12 pts
9 31 9 cars @ 1 1/2 = 13 1/2 pts
10 28 10 cars @ 1 1/2 = 15 pts
Provisional Starters
The highest-ranked two drivers in the top 15 in AMP points that fail
to qualify for the feature will be added to the rear of the field with a
promoter's option (if used). Alternates may be used to fill 20-car
qualifying field. A driver must present a race ready competitive car
at TECH in order to qualify for a provisional
Season Points Structure
1. Each 'A' Feature win is 40 points, with each subsequent position worth one
point less, with 22nd position in feature worth 19 points. If more than 22 cars
start feature, all positions from 22nd back receive 19 points. If track runs a
'B' feature(s), first non-transferring driver receives 18 points and each
subsequent position, back to sixth position, receives one less point per
position.
Sixth position and back in 'B' feature(s) receive 13 points. This applies to
all 'B', even if more than one is run.
2. Drivers that don't qualify for 'A' or 'B' feature will receive 13 points
equal to a last position finish for a 'B' feature.
3. Heat race points are awarded as follows: 1st - 3 points; 2nd - 2 points; 3rd
- 1
point.
4. Each driver will be able to drop 2 points nights for the season. These may
be
used for events that they do not attend or have mechanical failures, accidents,
or
simply poor finishes. All driver's final points will be based on the bases of
all
the AMP scheduled events (including co-sanctioned) - (minus) lowest two (2)
points
nights.
5. On nights that we are co-sanctioned, AMP drivers that sign in as AMP
competitors
will be award points in reference to only AMP competitors for that night. (Ex.
We
have drivers finish 1st-3rd-4th-7th-10th in the event, they will receive points
for
the 1st five positions for the evening. This will not affect the pay scale for
the
event.) Another example would be: In the event that we have only 10 AMP
competitor
qualifiers for the event, 11th place points would go to the first non-qualifier
and so
on. If 2 drivers have the same non-qualifying position in a 'B' Feature the
high
position would be awarded to the driver in the earlier 'B' Feature. Again,
minimum
points received for any night with driver signed as AMP Competitor will be 13
points.
6. ALL AMP members competing (100%) in ALL AMP Sanctioned and co-sanctioned
events will be
awarded $500 Bonus at the 2008 AMP Series Banquet.
Feature Race:
AMP will start 20 cars unless other wise stated/ posted at tracks.
