Steve Sheppard Jr and Matt Goulden win features at Morgan County Speedway!
With a full field of late models on hand, Steve Sheppard Jr led all 25 laps of the late model feature Friday night, but had to deal with Matt Taylor the whole distance. Late in the race in lapped traffic, Taylor pulled alongside Sheppard Jr several times, but could not complete the pass. No one else could even compete with the duo up front as they got into lapped traffic very early. Sheppard Jr won with Matt Taylor a very close second, followed by Wisconsin's Jayme Zidar, Wes Steidinger and Brandon Sheppard.
The heat races were close as well, with the first heat going to Jayme Zidar over Matt Taylor, Terry Babb, Brian Diveley, Ryan Little and Dick Taylor. The second heat went to Kelly Kouski over Steve Sheppard Jr, Brandon Sheppard, Wes Steidinger, Roger Brickler and Mike Mudd. Sheppard Jr got a break at feature time, as the cars were presented, outside front row starter Kelly Kouski pulled to the infield, scratching his entry for the night. This moved the outside row forward, giving Sheppard the opportunity to jump out to the lead at the start of the race.
unofficial finish:
5s Steve Sheppard, Jr
3L Matt Taylor
z9 Jayme Zidar
J1 Wes Steidinger
B5 Brandon Sheppard
82 Roger Brickler
38L Ryan Little
24 laps
88 Terry Babb
B1 Brandon Sheppard
7M Adam Mefford
34 Mike Mudd
The street stock heats went to Roger Smith over Paul Bullpitt and Travis
Copley. The second heat went to Rick Willis Jr over Cleatus Coats and Terry
Miller.
The feature was exciting, as sixth place starter Terry Miller worked his way to
second place by the half way point, and while attempting a pass for the lead on
Rick Willis Jr, got a little high coming off turn four, and bounced down off the
frontstretch, which flattened his right front tire. Rick Willis Jr would go on
for the victory over Roger Smith, Chad Day, Paul Bullpitt, Cleatus Coats and
Travis Copley.
The modified class saw Ryan Blakeman take the first heat over Brandon Roberts
and Russ Colton. The second heat went to Matt Goulden over Brian Lynn and Steve
Theivagt. The feature had quite a number of cautions slowing the pace, but Matt
Goulden would hold on for the win over Brian Lynn, Ryan Blakeman, Wendel Zulauf
Jr, Brandon Roberts and Wes O' Dell.
The non wing sprint heat races went to Terry Babb over Chris Urish, and to Tommy Rockwell over Mitch Wismiller.
The pony heat went to Jeff Dodd over Rich Buehler.
The mini-late models made their first appearance at the speedway, with the heat win going to Eric Graybull over Clint Rich
There were 75 cars total in the pits, with the late model feature ending at
9:05, and the modified feature done at 9:35.
The Billy and Kim West promoted show moved at a very timely pace....thank you!
Steidinger Wins UMP Summernational rerun at Morgan County
Jacksonville, IL. (8/15/08) Fairbury’s Wes Steidinger overtook Rodney Melvin on the 9th lap to claim the 40 lap UMP late model feature. The race was originally part of the UMP summer national tour, but rain plagued the event. The win paid $6000, as Steidinger turned back the challenge of Steve Sheppard Jr. For Wes, it was his 7th overall win of the year.
In other action, in the 20 lap UMP modified race, Wendell Zulauf Jr. had a upset win over current UMP national modified point leader Jeff Leka. Leka got his nose under Zulauf several times, but could not complete the pass. Leka, Dave Wietholder, Jeffrey Leka, and Brandon Roberts complete the top 5. In the 15 lap UMP street stock race, Missouri traveler Steve Maisel led the entire race to pick up the win. Cleatus Coats, Shad Eskew, Travis Copley, and Jim Farley rounded out the top 5.

Morgan County Speedway Rained Out Thursday July24....

Morgan County Speedway rained out again Friday July 18
Heavy Rains Force Postponement
Of Thursday’s Herald & Review 100 At Macon Speedway;
Raindate Changed For UMP DIRT Summer Nationals Event At Morgan County
Speedway
Morgan County/Macon Doubleheader Now Set For Aug. 15 & 16
MACON, IL – July 3, 2008 – Heavy rain overnight and into the morning inundated the famed Macon Speedway, forcing the postponement of Thursday night’s UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Herald & Review 100.
It marks the second year in a row that the high-banked, one-fifth-mile track’s marquee extra-distance event has been rescheduled by rain.
The $6,000-to-win Herald & Review 100 will now be run on Sat., Aug. 16, setting up a big weekend doubleheader of rescheduled Summer Nationals dates in Illinois.
UMP DIRTcar director Sam Driggers said that Morgan County Speedway in Jacksonville, Ill., which had its Summer Nationals show washed out midway through time trials on Wednesday night, has rescheduled its $6,000-to-win program for Fri., Aug. 15. Morgan County Speedway officials initially agreed to a raindate of Mon., July 7, but it was later determined that racing can not take place that evening due to preparations for the Morgan County Fair that begins on July 9.
Macon Speedway is the fourth track that has rescheduled its 2008 UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals event due to rain. A fifth event, on June 21 at I-55 Raceway in Pevely, Mo., was canceled and not rescheduled due to flood waters that covered the track’s access road.
The Morgan County/Macon swing on Aug. 15-16 will be classified as non-point UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals events because they fall after the series finale on July 12 at Oakshade Raceway in Wauseon, Ohio. But with each $6,000-to-win race sure to attract a large car count, they will figure prominently in the UMP DIRTcar Super Late Model national points battle that begins to hits its homestretch in August.
The Summer Nationals continues on Friday night (July 4) with a $10,000-to-win event at Tri-City Speedway in Pontoon Beach, Ill.

Wednesday’s UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Stop At Morgan County Speedway Postponed By Rain To
Fri Aug 15JACKSONVILLE, IL – July 2, 2008 – Unrelenting rain forced the postponement of Wednesday night’s UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals event at Morgan County Speedway.
The 40-lap, $6,000-to-win show has been rescheduled for Fri Aug 15 –
Two light showers – one that delayed the start of hot laps, and another midway through the Super Late Model time trials – slowed the program but weren’t enough to stop it. Officials finally had to throw in the towel, however, when the rain intensified around 8:40 p.m. as the surface of the high-banked, quarter-mile oval was being run in. Strong thunderstorms moved into the area shortly thereafter.
Thirty-five Super Late Models were signed in for Wednesday night’s competition. Just over half the field had completed a time-trial lap in the group qualifying session before the rain stopped the action, with Jeep VanWormer of Pinconning, Mich., the fastest on the clock at 11.655 seconds.
It was the third rainout of the 2008 UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals, joining postponements on June 13 at Brownstown (Ind.) Speedway and June 28 at StormPay.com Clarksville (Tenn.) Speedway. A fourth event, on June 21 at I-55 Raceway in Pevely, Mo., was canceled and not rescheduled due to flood waters that covered the track’s access road.
The Summer Nationals continues on Thursday night
(July 3) at the one-fifth-mile
Macon (Ill.) Speedway with the $6,000-to-win
Herald & Review 100.

RAINED OUT
(Bill W) There was bound to be a repeat winner eventually at the Morgan County Speedway. When it finally happened, it was no surprise who it was! Jerrod Hull became the first two-time winner in eight appearances by the Ideal Ready Mix Sprint Invaders at the Morgan County Speedway in Jacksonville, Illinois on Friday night.
The Sikeston, Missouri driver led all 25 laps to record his 12th career Sprint Invaders win (1st all-time). The ¼ mile banked oval was heavy from recent rains, but it did not affect Hull and his Avenger chassis/Automotive Machine powered/Scott Bonar wrenched #12 sprint car. Slicing through traffic, Hull’s final margin of victory was over a straightaway on second place finisher Bobby Mincer.
Chris Urish led an initial green flag start that was called back for a stalled Jimmy Davies. Hull, who started on the pole beside the Elkhart, Illinois driver, took advantage of his second chance. “The first start, I was loose getting into turn one,” said Hull. “We pulled the wing back about 2 ½ inches, and that made all the difference in the world on the second start.”
Urish, who has been competing without a wing at the track on Friday nights, was gracious about the second start. “I shared my tricks a little early on that first start,” said Urish. “Jerrod is too good of a driver to make the same mistake twice.”
Matt Rogerson, who won the Sprint Invaders opener at 34 Raceway, took second from Urish and applied pressure to Hull early on. He made a couple of bids for the point on laps five and six, before spinning into the infield on lap seven. Mincer gained from Rogerson’s misfortune and had moved up into fourth for the restart. “I was trying to be patient, but not to patient to where I was falling behind,” said Mincer. “The car felt good after the heat race, and we didn’t make many changes.”
Mincer continued his advance and dueled with Urish for the runner-up spot for several laps. “I was catching him, and I could tell I was a little faster,” said Mincer. “But on the quarter-mile, it’s tough. Finally in turn one, I saw a small opening and had to go for it. Fortunately, it worked out for us.” The move put Mincer in second, but he wasn’t going to catch Hull.
The leader had built a sizable lead, but was still worried a bit, as the last 19 laps went green to checker. “Later on, the track got a little slicker,” said Hull. “I had to move the wing back a bit. When I got into lapped traffic, I started worrying about the wing a bit and slowed down.” Worry not Jarrod, you’re a winner again!
Urish held on to third, followed by Russ Hall and Bret Tripplett. Impressive 17 year old sprint car rookie Mark Shirshekan was sixth, while KSE Hard-charger Korey Weyant, Ryan Jamison, Matt Harms and Rogerson completed the top ten.
The Ideal Ready Mix Sprint Invaders will return to action on Sunday, May 25 at the 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa!
