Just a quick posting from the forum at the Aztec Speedway site:

GREAT RACES EVEN THOUGH THE COUNT WAS A LITTLE LOW. WE DROVE OVER 700
MILES TO COME AND SEE THIS SHOW AND WILL AGAIN. I HOPE THAT YOU ARE
ABLE TO DO IT AGAIN NEXT SEASON ON A DIFFERENT DATE TO POSSIBLY PICK
UP SOME OF THE DENVER CARS THAT RUN NCRA. NOT SURE WHAT HAPPENED TO
THE PHOENIX CARS, NONE OF THEM ARE RESPONDING ON THE SWDRA SITE. GOOD
LUCK WITH THE REST OF THE SEASON.

Yeah, the car count wasn't what everyone hoped for, but that sounds
like a happy fan :) It was a fantastic race Saturday, and on Friday
once we got things going. Nice job, everyone.

WDRA 4 Corners Shootout finds Berry in victory lane again!

By Tom Freimann

(Aztec, NM) With the crash fest of Friday night over, 16 Super Dirt Late Models were able to return to Aztec Speedway for the second night and race for the $2500 to win 40 lap feature. After heavy rains fell in the overnight hours, the track prep crew did a fantastic job of getting the sandy soil whipped into racing shape for the evening. Temps were in the upper 80's and the sun was shining as the fans began to arrive for the second night of racing at the 1/3 mile high banked speedway. No newcomers showed to compete for the prize money as many were expecting.

Heat one hit the track with the #47 of Kyle Hill on the pole. The track was still wet as the race started with Mark Myers leading the pack and Jeep Berry giving chase. The only caution in the race came when Jason Davis lost the hood from the car he borrowed from Dean Moore. Myers held the lead for 6 laps on the high side as Berry kept trying to run the low side. On the seventh lap, Myers bobbled in turn 3 and Berry shot under to take the lead. Davis finished in third. Kyle Hill lost the motor in his #47 GRT a few laps into the heat race.

Heat two came out with the rebuilt #93 of Terry Boushee of Aurora, CO on the pole. This heat was also a fast heat that was caution free for the 8 laps. Curt Daniels from Paonia, CO went from last place to take the win over Boushee on the last 2 laps. The 5B from Edgewood, NM driven by Butch Reid came in third place.

Heat three rolled out with Ron Lengel of Price, UT piloting his purple 49 on the pole. Once the green flag fell, local driver Jeff Davis jumped out to the front, quickly followed by the 69 of John Aragon. Davis took the checkers with Aragon right behind him. The 38H of Marc Herrera finished in 3rd.

The late models took the track as the last race of the night with John Aragon and Jeff Davis in the front row. The driver's gave the fans a 4-wide salute to thank them for coming out to the races and got ready to race. As the green flag fell, Jeff Davis took the lead for the first 3 laps. The 3C of Daniels overtook Davis on lap four and began to built a lead. The 75B of Jeep Berry began to hunt down Daniels and they were racing side by side for the next 10 laps. Berry slid under Daniels going into turn one on lap 13 to take the lead. Berry was set up at that point and began to check out on the field. The 14M of Dean Moore dropped out on lap 14 with a flat left front. All other drivers went caution free for the entire 40 laps with Jeep lapping to 6th place to take home the $2500 first prize.

Jeep swept the weekend taking home $3500 after finishing first last night, finishing with a broken fan and a damaged radiator.

WDRA results from Friday night opener at Aztec Speedway
August 29, 2008

(Aztec, NM) It was a beautiful Friday in Aztec, NM as 17 Super Dirt Late Models converged on Aztec Speedway for the first night of racing action for the 2nd Annual Snap-on Tools 4 corners Late Model Shootout.
Heat one found the hot pink #62 of Kim Horn from Gillette, WY on the pole. The Heat was won by the 38H of Mark Herrera from Albuquerque, followed by the 11 of Mark Myers and Kim rounding out the top 3. Grand Junction, CO's Jason Davis was a scratch for the heat with oil system problems.
Heat two's pole was drawn by Helper, UT's Bob Cook. The heat victory was taken by the 5B of Butch Reid of Edgewood, NM. Dean Moore was running a solid second, but a mishap on the last lap of the heat with a lapped car put the 14M into the wall in turn one. So Second place was Cook in the 6C and third was  red 28 of Ron Frazier.
Heat three also had a scratch with oil problems, as pole sitter Kyle Hill lost oil pressure during hot laps and was out for the night. This put the 75B of Jeep Berry on the pole in what proved to be the fastest heat of the night. Berry took the quick lead as all the cars raced the heat one on 3 wheels. The #93 of Terry Boushee finished 2nd with the 3C of Curt Daniels of Paonia CO finishing 3rd.

The top 6 cars were inverted in the feature by fan pill draw, giving Bob Cook his second pole of the night with the Ron Frazier joining him in the front row. Cook turned sideways going into turn two at the start of the feature and collected the 49 on Ron Lengel, knocking them both out for the night with major damage. On the second start, Terry Boushee got shoved sideways causing another caution. The cars were lined up for a third try, which was the lucky start and the race then went caution free for the entire 30 laps. Jeep Berry moved to the front early and built a comfortable lead, as Dean Moore was working his way through the pack in his drive to the front. By the time the 14m moved into 2nd place halfway through the feature, Berry had a half a track lead on the pack. Berry lapped car after car, lapping al the way up to the 5th place car of Kim Horn. Moore finished 2nd with Butch Reid in third. Local driver Jeff Davis worked his way from his 12th starting spot to finish in the fourth spot. Fifth place was decided by .063 of a second as Ron Frazier edged Kim Horn at the finish line. Seventh was the #26 of Richard Johnson, eighth was the #69 of John Aragon. Herrera and Ron Williams rounded out the top ten.

We are looking forward to the 50 lap $2500.00 to win, $300.00 to start feature happening on Saturday night as we wrap up the 2nd Annual Snap-on Tools 4 corners Late Model Shootout at Aztec Speedway.

Racing starts at 7:00 pm. For more info go to www.wdra.net or www.aztecspeedway.com

Jeep keeps winning in WDRA events!
(Grand Junction, CO)
By Scott Moore
July 30, 2008

The WDRA event at Thunder Mountain Speedway saw 14 Late Models in the
pits for the evening, including series regulars Jeep Berry, Dean
Moore, and Kim Horn- the latter 2 of whom were coming off runs in the
World of Outlaws series. They were joined by WDRA season points
challengers Jason Davis, Curt Daniels, Michael Wright, Andy and Kyle
Hill, and Greg Kolbaba. Visiting racers from the Front Range were Rick
Lieser, Jason Schobinger, Scott Cimfl, and Gary Dechant. Utah's Bob
 Cook rounded out the field.

Moderate temperatures and an overcast sky greeted the fans as they
arrived at the track, and soon the stands were filled to capacity as
the WDRA cars rolled out for the first of 2 heat races. The heats were
clean and uneventful, with Jeep Berry in the 75b and Dean Moore's 14m
winning by comfortable margins. This set the field for the highlight
of the evening, the 30 lap Main Event. Announcer Chris Martinez chose
a fan from the crowd to draw a card, resulting in a 2 row inverted
start- placing Jason Davis on the pole, with Jeep Berry right behind.
The front 2 on the outside were Kim Horn's #62 and Dean Moore.

At the green, Jeep Berry took his red and white #75b to the inside and
led the field into turn one- an effort that went unrewarded, as the
race was red flagged for a frightening accident on the backstretch
involving #71 Andy Hill. In heavy traffic, Hill clipped the
backstretch wall causing the total loss of brakes. He then struck and
launched over the end of the wall at the emergency vehicle entrance,
his car coming to rest atop the Armco and earth berm at the entrance
to turn 3. Thankfully, Andy was shaken but uninjured, emergency crews
got the scene cleaned up, and the field was reset for a new start.
This time, Jason Davis held the lead into turn 1, followed closely by
Berry- this would remain the order at the front for sever laps. Davis
made expert use of the low line to keep Berry at bay, until the 1/3rd
point when Jeep snuck by on the outside en route to a convincing win,
lapping up to the 5th place car of Kim Horn by the checkers. After
Rick Lieser and Dean Moore were forced to retire after slight contact
between then caused flat tires, the 05 of Gary Dechant and 3 of Curt
Daniels put on a spirited race for 3rd, with a dozen or more side by
side laps bringing the fans to their feet. Dechant's tactic of running
the high side finally paid off. With Daniels suffering from severe
tire wear, the 05 pulled away over the final 10 laps to a third place
finish. He was followed by Daniels, Wyoming's Kim Horn in 5th, and
Rifle, Colorado's Michael Wright in 6th. Wright had a terrific charge
in the #28, coming from the last row to 6th place after getting by
Jason Schobinger in the 16b with 2 laps to go.

All in all, the fans enjoyed a great race. They showed their
appreciation in the pits afterward, lining up in dozens for
autographs, hero cards, and driver merchandise. As Saturday turned
into Sunday, the pits cleared and the teams of the WDRA headed home to
prepare for the August 2nd race in Price, UT, where Jeep Berry will
attempt to continue his string of 4 straight WDRA wins.

The WDRA and Sweetwater Speedway are expecting to run a full show on Saturday. While this is a discouraging turn of events, the WDRA was proud to have a very good turnout or cars and their crews for Friday nights events.

Berry Starts the 2008 WDRA season much like he ended 2007, in Victory Circle!

By Tom Freimann

(Olathe, CO) The Western Dirt Racing Association, Inc started it 2008 Super Dirt Late Model season in its own backyard at Thunder Mountain Speedway located just 40 minutes from Grand Junction in the high desert of the western Rocky Mountains. It was a nice sunny day, with temperatures in the upper 60’s when the 13 Late Model drivers arrived to TMS. The track owner, Sean Gibbs, had made great improvements in having a well prepared, dust free racing surface for the fans to see the high horse powered stock cars roar around the track. And the full house of race fans was not disappointed!

Heat one found past WDRA champion Dean Moore of Grand Junction on the pole with Helper, UT Corey Smith on the outside in his brand new all black machine. Last year’s WDRA Champion Jeep Berry started the heat in 5th, but that all changed very quickly when the green flag flew to start the race. Jeep made short order of the field to take the checkered flag, with Dean in second, the 29A of Racin Jason Davis finished third in the heat with Aztec, NM Jeff Davis and Corey Smith rounding out the top 5.

Heat two the made it’s way onto the track with Cahone, CO’s Andy Hill on the pole and his brother, Kyle Hill on the outside. The green flag flew and this heat had it’s share of minor casualties… with the 16B of Jason Schobinger coming to a rest in the infield halfway through the heat, soon to be followed by Rifle, CO’s Michael Wright, whose fuel pump belt popped off. Both cars had minor breakdowns and were ready to race in the feature. Heat two was won by Andy Hill, followed by Kyle Hill, Gillette, WY’s pink #62 piloted by Kim Horn, with Scott Aibner and Michael Wright rounding out the top five.

The WDRA did away with the pole dash this year, and instead will invert the number of rows as determined by the first heat race winner drawing a pill to decide how many of the first four rows will invert. Jeep drew a number 2 and that put the Hill Brothers in the front row. The Race ran smoothly, with limited caution and little dust. The Main Feature was won by Jeep, with Jeff Davis in second. Dean Moore spun with twelve to go and still pulled out a third place finish. Jason Davis of Grand Junction finished 4th with Paonia, CO driver Curt Daniels in fifth. The sharp looking 16B of Jason Schobinger of Wiggins, CO was sixth, Kim Horn in seventh, Corey Smith in eighth and Andy Hill and Michael Wright rounding out the top ten.

It was a great night of racing for all, with no complete casualties for the night. The WDRA Super Dirt Late models will be returning to Thunder Mountain Speedway on Friday May 23rd, again at Thinder Mountain Speedway.
