Davenport Speedway Kids Club Completes Successful First Season
DAVENPORT, Iowa (October 15, 2010) – The Davenport Speedway Kids Club was new
for the 2010 Racing Season at Davenport Speedway. It was founded with the
hopes of making the young fans feel like a bigger
part of dirt track racing . . . because, after all, they are the future of
dirt track racing.
The Club
is for race fans age 12
and under; and it’s about having FUN! To be a part of the Davenport Speedway
Kids Club, all the kids have to do is show up at the track.
Our first
year proved to be very successful! Along with the help of many of our weekly
drivers/racing teams, and some local businesses, the Davenport Speedway Kids
Club organizers were able to put together a great first year for the Kids
Club! Special thanks go out to those who helped us out this year; we couldn’t
have done it without you!
Some of
the Kids Club 2010 activities included: raising money for Karsyn’s Krusaders,
a scavenger hunt, bike give-a-ways, a victory lane photo each week with a
feature winner. In our first year, the Davenport Speedway Kids Club was also
visited by Monkey Joe’s, the River Bandit, the Davenport Fire Department, and
Crumbo the Clown.
The final
race of the 2010 season at the Davenport Speedway, the 7th Annual Spooktacular,
had a Halloween theme. All kids dressed up in costume received a free prize.
There was a Kids Costume Parade at intermission, and the kids were invited to
‘Trick-or-Treat’ in the pit area with the drivers after the races.
The
Davenport Speedway Kids Club would like to say thank you, to the amazing
businesses and race teams who helped make our first year a success!

Brannon and Current Capture Spooktacular Cash
by Mike
McGuire
DAVENPORT, Ia. (October 2, 2010) – Under beautiful, but chilly weather
conditions, the 7th Annual Spooktacular was held at the Davenport Speedway.
The event was the final race of the 2010 season at the Davenport track. One
hundred forty-eight racecars filled the pit area for the race.
Brannon
Bechen became the first 4 Stock driver to win back-to-back Spooktacular
features. Bechen started the 50-lap main in the fifth position and took the
lead from Chris Holmlund after a restart on lap eight. Bechen would lead the
remaining laps despite coming under attack several times during the race.
Jake
Ellithrope hung around the top five the entire race and posted a second place
finish. Brad Chandler finished third and was the last car on the lead lap. Joe
Zrostlik made a valiant effort to get his lap back on the racetrack but would
finish fourth, with Mike Wisdom fifth.
The
Street Stock feature was also a fifty lap, $1,000 to win affair. RJ Gonzales
jumped out to the early lead and held the top spot until lap six, when Nathan
Hall went around him on the outside. Lap eight saw Timmy Current use the
bottom groove to grab the lead. Gonzales went back to the front on lap
sixteen. Current took back the lead on lap twenty and would stay on top the
rest of the way to the checkers.
Gonzales
made it close in the waning laps but would settle for second. Jeremy Marquette
ran a solid race for a third place finish, followed by Hall in fourth and Dan
Mohr fifth.
John
Bull dominated the Pro Mod class, easily taking the twenty lap feature win.
Once in the lead, Bull was untouchable in the green, white, checkered race.
Shaune Lewis put on a strong second place finish, followed by Bob Dominacki,
Tony VonDresky, and Milo Veloz Jr., in that order.
The IMCA/B-Mod
feature also went caution-free. Ryan Dolan led the entire race in taking the
win. Jerry Pratt came from well back in the field, to finish second. Joe Beal
finished third ahead of Ray Cox Jr. and Craig Crawford.
The Mod
Lites put on a good show in their feature. Rob Guss and Joel Huggins were
running one and two early in the race, until they made contact which sent Guss
spinning. That brought out the caution, sending both to the rear of the field.
Tom Schnabel, Mike Morrill, and Dusty Masolini each took turns at the front.
When Morrill retired with overheating problems, Masolini went to the front for
good and took home the checkers. Schnabel took second with Matt Werner third,
Anthony Guss fourth, and Shon Sanders fifth.
Joe
Grant topped the Hobby Stocks, winning both the heat and feature races. Bruce
Yoeger made a late charge to take second with Josh Neal third, Chad Paup
fourth, and Gene Ehlers fifth.
The
Davenport Speedway Kid’s Club completed its first year with a costume parade
for the kids during intermission and an early session of ‘Trick-or –Treat’ in
the pit area, after the races.
DRT TRAK
Racing Inc. would like to thank the fans, racers, and sponsors who
participated in racing events at the Davenport Speedway and Jackson County
Speedway in 2010. We look forward to seeing you all again for another
exciting racing season in 2011.

Neal takes LM checkers, Guss takes track championship
by Mike McGuire
DAVENPORT, Ia. (August 27, 2010) -- Way too soon, Friday was Kile Motorsports
Season Championship night at the Davenport Speedway. Track champions were
crowned in all five weekly divisions, under perfect weather conditions for a
change.
The Petersen Plumbing an d Heating - IMCA Late Model feature had all the drama
and plot twists of a Hollywood movie. Ray Guss Jr., came into the night leading
both the track points and the IMCA Late Model national points, with a slim lead
over Terry Neal. Guss started on the pole position and quickly built a sizeable
lead.
The caution flag started flying on lap seven and would wave three more times by
lap 12. It was during this period that Guss developed mechanical problems and
dropped back in the field. Meanwhile, Neal was rifling through the pack and took
the lead on lap twelve.
Neal would go untouched the remainder of the 25 laps for the win and the much
needed points towards his national title hopes. He also became the eighth
different late model winner in nine races at Davenport, this season.
Defending IMCA national champion, Kevin Blum, battled to a second place finish
in a barrowed car, with Doug Nigh finishing third and Matt Ryan fourth. Brian
Harris rounded out the top five.
Guss stayed on the racetrack and nursed his ride to a fourteenth place finish,
enough to give him the track championship at the Davenport Speedway and the
precious bonus points towards the national crown.
The Goacher Towing - Pro Mod division entered the night with Doug Crampton
holding a four point lead over John Bull. When the final Pro Mod checkered flag
had flown, Doug Crampton held a four point lead over John Bull and the track
championship.
The two drivers started side by side in the front row with Bull leading lap one,
before Crampton took over on lap two. Crampton would get out to a decent lead,
and then Bull started to reel him in. On lap 14, Bull would retake the lead and
drive to his second win on the season. Bob Dominacki took a second place finish,
with Crampton third. Thad Wilson was fourth and Tim Arp fifth.
Matt Werner topped off his Koehler Electric Street Stock track championship with
a flag to flag feature win. Four different drivers were in the mix for second,
before Jeremy Marquette pulled away late in the race. Scott Griffin took third
with Bruce Fosdyck Jr., fourth, and Bryan Ritter fifth.
Jerry Pratt took the Engineered Maintenance Service IMCA Modified track
championship despite finishing ninth in the feature. Pratt led lap one of the
main, before suffering two flat tires during the race. Mike Fluegel grabbed the
lead on lap two and would race to his second win on the season, in a race that
would end under caution. Andrew Burk would finish second, followed by Tony
VonDresky, Greg Wilson, and Keith Haislip.
Kevin Haury claimed the 4 Stock track title by finishing third in the
caution-free, 10-lap feature. Haury came into the night with a seven point lead
over Luke Thurness and ten points over Mike Morrow. Thurness and Morrow both won
their heat races, putting the pressure on Haury. In the feature, Morrow quickly
got out front and would take his fourth feature win of the season with Thurness
close behind. Haury managed to keep the leaders within eyesight and earned
enough points to win the track championship.
The next event at the Davenport Speedway will be the 7th Annual Spooktacular,
held Saturday, September 26th. The event is highlighted by 50-lap, $1,000-to-win
features for both street stocks and 4 stocks.

Local races have big impact on IMCA Championship
DAVENPORT, Iowa (August 26, 2010) – As the 2010 racing season draws to a close,
a pair of local races will help determine the IMCA Late Model national champion.
The final weekend in August is the last opportunity for racers to gain points
and wins toward the late model title. That includes Season Championship events
this Friday at the Davenport Speedway and Saturday at the Jackson County
Speedway in Maquoketa.
Through August 15th, Ray Guss Jr., of Milan, Ill., held a slim six point lead
over Terry Neal of Ely, Iowa. Last weekend, Neal won at the Jackson County
Speedway and the Dubuque Fairgrounds Speedway. Guss finished second to Neal at
Jackson County and won at Quad City Speedway.
The IMCA Late Model national champion is determined by a driver’s twenty best
finishes during the season and bonus points. Bonus points are awarded to a
driver who wins a track championship. The bonus is based on the average car
count at that track during the season. A driver is awarded one track
championship for bonus points in the Late Model division. If a driver gets more
than one track championship, the highest number is used.
Guss has a four point lead over Neal at the Jackson County Speedway and is also
leading the point standings at the Davenport Speedway and Quad City Speedway.
Neal is also locked in a tight points battle at Dubuque Fairgrounds Speedway.
In event of a tie, the champion is determined by most feature wins.
Track titles will also be determined in all weekly divisions this weekend at
Davenport Speedway and Jackson County Speedway. Friday’s races at the Davenport
Speedway are sponsored by Kile Motorsports, while Saturday in Maquoketa it will
be ‘Racing to a Cure for ALS Night’ at the Jackson County Speedway. ‘Racing to a
Cure for ALS Night’ is sponsored by S.C. Oberbreckling Excavating &
Construction.
On Friday, pit gates at Davenport open at 4 p.m. and the grandstand opens at
5pm. Hot laps are at 6pm and racing starts at 6:30pm.
For ‘Racing to a Cure for ALS Night’ on Saturday, the start of the racing
program has been revised. Pit gates at the Jackson County Speedway open at 4
p.m. and the grandstand opens at 4:30pm, as usual. Hot laps will be at 6:30pm

Mississippi Valley Fair, the Davenport Speedway is primed for some dirt track
stock car racing. Beginning with this Friday, August 13th, only three point
races remain in 2010 season and the battles for the track championships will
be contested every lap along the way.
The 2010
season has been a wet one at the Davenport Speedway, as a handful of rainouts
has shortened the season considerably. It has also helped to keep the point
standings tight in all five weekly divisions.
The
Petersen Plumbing & Heating IMCA Late Model season has been an exciting one to
watch as seven different drivers have captured feature wins in the eight races
held this season. Ray Guss Jr. (Milan, Ill.) has one feature win and leads the
point standings with 306 points. Mike Garland of Morrison, Ill., is currently
second and heads a list of five drivers that are within 13 points of one
another. Garland is followed by Matt Ryan, defending national champion Kevin

In the

four victories, but holds only a four point lead over John Bull in the
standings. Bull has one feature win. Third place in points, Bob Dominacki, has
two feature wins this season. Thad Wilson has one feature win and is fourth in
points.
The
Koehler Electric Street Stock class is led by Matt Werner of Geneseo, Ill.,
with five feature wins. Davenport’s Cary Brown is second in points, eight

holds a 34-point lead over second place Andrew Burk. Mike Fluegel and Todd
Dykema, third and fourth in points respectively, are within 9 points of second
place Burk.
The 4
Stock class has been exciting, entertaining, and leading the way with the most
disqualifications this season. The top three drivers have recorded all eight
feature wins and are separated by only 10 points. Kevin Haury has two
victories and leads the points, second place Luke Thurness and third place

Buesling
Becomes First LM Repeat Winner
by Mike
McGuire
DAVENPORT,
Ia. (July 16, 2010) -- In addition to a great night of dirt track stock car
racing action, the fans were given a chance drop their favorite drivers in a
dunk tank for a good cause. The Davenport Speedway Kid’s Club was sponsoring
the dunk tank, with proceeds going to Karsyn’s Krusaders.
The streak
of different feature winners in the Peterson Plumbing & Heating IMCA Late
Models is over. Nate Buesling became the first Late Model driver to repeat a
visit to victory lane in 2010. His other win came June 11th.
The 25-lap
Late Model main started with Jeff Stevens leading lap one. Mike Zemo Jr., led
laps two through nine. On lap ten, Kevin Blum went to the front. A couple of
cautions and restarts later, Buesling put his racecar out in front. Blum would
battle back on the high side to regain the lead, only to lose it to Buesling
again. With only a couple laps left, Blum went to the bottom in turns three
and four under Buesling, but ended up in the infield.
Buesling
drove on to the win. Ray Guss Jr., finished second. Matt Ryan made a late race
charge for third, followed by Mike Garland and Andy Eckrich.
Bob
Dominacki lived up to his nickname “the Dominator”, leading 18 of the 20 laps
in the Goacher Towing Pro Mod main. Brian Bushong led lap one after starting
on the pole and Chuck Hanna led lap two. The rest was all Bob. At the checkers
Dominacki held a sizeable lead over second place Thad Wilson. John Bull took
third, with Hanna fourth and Doug Crampton fifth.
Matt
Werner became the first driver to win five features at Davenport this season.
Scott Griffin grabbed the early lead of the Koehler Electric Street Stock
feature. Werner was able to get the lead during a series of restarts on laps
four through six. Once in the lead, Werner went unchallenged, winning by a
full straightaway over second place Cary Brown. Griffin held on for third,
with Bruce Fosdyck Jr., fourth and Bryan Ritter fifth.
Jerry
Pratt picked up his fourth feature win of the year at Davenport in the EMS
IMCA Modified class. Pratt started sixth and passed Todd Dykema for the lead
on lap four. Pratt would lead the remainder of the way despite having five
caution flags over the next seven laps. Andrew Burk had a solid run to finish
second, while Dykema regrouped after being one of the cautions to finish
third. Joe Jones Jr., and Hunter Wilson were fourth and fifth respectively.
Luke
Thurness made it three wins in a row in the 4 Stock division. Chris James
grabbed the lead on the first lap of the feature and by lap three, already had
Thurness on his tail. The two leaders would battle side by side and bumper to
bumper until lap eight, when Thurness took the lead for good. James would
finish in the runner-up spot with Justin Veloz third. Kevin Haury and Rich
Phillips rounding out the top five.
Next
Friday, July 23rd, will be Kile Motorsports night at the Davenport Speedway.
The Kid’s Club special guest will be Monkey Joe.

Davenport Speedway Kids Club announces schedule for Dunk Tank on Friday
DAVENPORT, Ia. (July 14, 2010) – The Davenport Speedway Kid’s Club will be
raising money for a very special cause during the stock car racing program at
the Davenport Speedway this Friday, July 16th. The Kid’s Club is sponsoring a
dunk tank to raise money for Karsyn’s Krusaders.
Karsyn’s Krusaders is an organization committed to “Kickin’ Cancer’s Butt One
Lap at a Time”. The mission of the organization is to create awareness and
fundraising initiatives within the racing community to further the efforts of
non- profit organizations which help positively impact the lives of
individuals who have been affected by cancer and other life-threatening
illnesses, with emphasis on childhood cancer.
Friday night will be very special for Karsyn’s Krusaders. After the
devastating loss of a 13 year-old friend, Sergio, the board has voted to allow
his family to direct where the funds are used in the Karsyn’s Krusaders’
mission.
Sergio, was an amazing boy. He “kicked cancer’s butt” twice, but his life was
taken by an infection on Sunday. Sergio is one of our own Quad City area
HEROES.
This Friday make plans to attend Karsyn’s Krusaders Night at Davenport
Speedway. Let’s see how much money we can raise to help out this wonderful
organization and “Kick Cancer’s Butt One Lap at a Time.” Local drivers have
signed up to sit in the dunk tank to help raise money. The driver who raises
the most money will also receive a prize.
The dunk
tank will be open most the night, starting at 5:15pm. A list of times and
drivers will be posted to keep the fans informed of who is in the tank. Ten
drivers are currently signed up and the Davenport Speedway Kids Club is hoping
more will stop by the Dunk Tank if they have extra time to help out and take a
turn.

Murphy Becomes Seventh Different Late Model Winner at Davenport
by Mike
McGuire
DAVENPORT,
Ia. (July 9, 2010) -- Friday was Diercks Family Racing Night at the Davenport
Speedway. In addition to the weekly stock car racing program, there were bike
races for the kids and an appearance by Crumbo the Clown.
Mike
Murphy Jr became the seventh different Petersen Plumbing and Heating IMCA Late
Model feature winner in as many races at Davenport this season. Murphy passed
Ray Guss Jr for the lead as the two were coming to the white flag and pulled
away on the final lap. Murphy found a groove to his liking in the middle of
the racetrack and used it to power past Guss, who was on the bottom of the
slick track. Guss held on for second with last week’s winner Mike Garland
third. Kevin Blum finished fourth, after starting in the last row. Nate
Buesling was fifth. Bret Diercks and Mark Preston were Late Model heat
winners.
The
Goacher Towing Pro Mod feature went all twenty laps, non-stop. With the
exception of the first five laps led by pole sitter Matt Stein, the race was
all Thad Wilson, as he captured his first Davenport point race of the season.
When Wilson passed Stein, he brought Doug Crampton with him, but all Wilson
saw was green, white , and checkered. Crampton held on for second with Doug
Nigh third. Stein and Chuck Hanna completed the top five.
Matt
Werner took home his fourth Koehler Electric Street Stock feature trophy of
the 2010 season. Werner started ninth and took exactly nine laps to take the
lead of the 12-lap main. Werner was followed to the finish line by Jeremy
Marquette, Scott Griffin, Cary Brown, and Rob Nylin, in that order.
In EMS
IMCA Modified action, Jerry Pratt collected his third feature win of the
season at the Davenport Speedway. Pratt took over the lead from Hunter Wilson,
after the race’s fourth caution, on lap eight. Wilson would hold on for a
solid second place finish, with Dan Klatt third, Ben Traver fourth, and Ray
Cox Jr. fifth.
Luke
Thurness made it back to back wins in the 4 Stock class. Thurness grabbed the
lead after a lap three restart and would not be challenged until the final
lap. Mike Morrow got to Luke’s bumper at the checkers for second place. Chris
James and Steven Phillips recovered from a first lap incident to finish third
and fourth respectively. Early race leader Jon Scott rounded out the top five.

Mike
Garland Earns IMCA LM win at Davenport
by Mike
McGuire
DAVENPORT, Ia. (July 2, 2010) – Fans and racers alike kicked off the July 4th
weekend with dirt track fireworks, Friday at the Davenport Speedway. The
Midwest Jalopies’ racing coupes were also racing as an added attraction.
Mike
Garland of Morrison, Illinois, roared to victory in the Petersen Plumbing and
Heating IMCA Late Model feature. Garland started third and battled with pole
sitter Marty Diercks for the lead through the first half of the race, swapping
the lead several times. In lapped traffic, Garland dove under Diercks on lap
twelve and took the lead for good.
Ray Guss
Jr. started eighth, slowly worked his way to the front, and passed Diercks for
second coming to the white flag. Diercks would settle for a well deserved
third, with Mike Murphy Jr., and Stephan Kammerer completing the top five.
Doug
Crampton returned to early season form, taking his fourth feature win of the
season in the Goacher Towing Pro Mod division. Chuck Hanna drove to the lead
from the drop of the green and built a decent lead before the caution flag
waved on lap 8. On the restart, Crampton made his move, using the bottom of
the track to get by Hanna for the lead. Bob Dominacki, who started last, got
to within a couple of car lengths of Crampton at the checkers, but would
finish in the runner-up spot. Hanna would finish third, ahead of Thad Wilson
and Tim Arp.
Despite
being only 12 laps, the Koehler Electric Street Stock feature had five
different leaders. Matt Jefferson led early before giving way to Phil
Anderson. Anderson, Jeremy Marquette, and Scott Griffin passed the lead around
until Anderson was involved in a late race caution. After the restart, Griffin
put his ride out front, but on the final lap spun in turn two. The race ended
under green, with Marquette getting his first win of the year. Rob Nylin took
second, followed by Cary Brown, Aaron Burroughs, and Bruce Fosdyck Jr., in
that order.
Mike
Fluegel posted the win in dominating fashion, in the EMS IMCA Modified
feature. Fluegel wrestled the lead away from Matt Wilson on lap five of the
15-lapper and managed to hold the lead through four more cautions before
taking the win. Dan Klatt would the remainder of the pack to finish second,
with Jerry Pratt third. Ray Cox Jr. took fourth, just ahead of Terry Rentfro.
After
being DQ’d last week, Luke Thurness came back with a vengeance Friday night.
Thurness led nine laps of the ten lap 4 Stock feature. Thurness started in the
eighth position and took the lead after a lap two restart. Bill Morrow ran in
the top five the entire race, crossed the line in second, but was disqualified
in post–race inspection. Mike Morrow was credited with second, Mitch
Bielenberg third, and Brandon Dahl fourth.
Terry
Mattly of East Moline, won the Midwest Jalopies feature race in a ’35 Chevy.
Second was Matt Picray with Bob Mingst third. Chris Gillmore won the heat.

Preston and Dominacki get Mid-Season Wins at Davenport
by Mike
McGuire
DAVENPORT, Ia. (June 25, 2010) – The first Friday of Summer brought the
Mid-Season Championships to the Davenport Speedway. Despite the three inches
of rain that fell this past week, the racetrack was fairly dry and firm,
providing for some great racing action.
Mark
Preston of Port Byron, won the Petersen Plumbing and Heating IMCA Late Model
feature in dominant fashion, leading 24 of the 25 laps. Preston took the lead
from Leroy Brenner on lap two, en route to his first win of the season. Behind
Preston, there was fierce competition for the remainder of the top five spots.
Stephan
Kammerer held second until late in the race when Ray Guss Jr. muscled his way
into the number two slot. Kammerer held on to finish third, just ahead of
Kevin Blum. Matt Ryan rounded out the top five.
‘The
Dominator’, Bob Dominacki captured his first feature win of the season at
Davenport in the Goacher Towing Pro Mods. Matt Stein led the first four laps
of the race before he started swapping the lead back and forth with Chad
Patch. Patch would win that battle and held the lead until Dominacki made his
move on lap 12. Dominacki would lead to the checkers, with Thad Wilson racing
his way to second. Patch would hold on for third, while Doug Crampton and John
Bull finished fourth and fifth respectively.
Scott
Griffin led the first three laps of the Koehler Electric Street Stock feature.
On lap four, Joe Beal, in his own racecar, took the lead and held it for a
handful of laps. Lap nine saw Matt Werner get under Beal in turns three and
four, for the second lead change of the race. Despite three yellows and a red
flag, Werner would hold serve all the way to the checkered flag. Beal would
hold on to second, with Jeremy Marquette third, Bryan Ritter fourth, and Rob
Nylin fifth.
The EMS
IMCA Modifieds put on a good show, as Jerry Pratt won his second Davenport
trophy of the season. Pratt took the lead from Tood Dykema on lap two of the
fifteen lap main, and never looked back. That was a good thing, as Terry
Rentfro stormed his way from deep in the field, to a close second place
finish. Jake Waterman took third, with Ray Cox Jr. fourth, and Hunter Wilson
fifth.
With
twenty 4 Stocks starting, everyone knew the feature would be exciting. The
action started with the green flag as Andy Maberry rolled his car in turn one.
Andy walked away from the wreck. When the race restarted, Kyle Rhoads grabbed
the lead. Rhoads’ lead did not last long as Luke Thurness moved his way to the
front, after stating tenth.
Mike
Morrow, who started one spot further back than Thurness, wrestled away the
lead on lap nine and drove to his third win of the season. Thurness would
cross the line second, but was disqualified in post-race inspection. The
runner-up position went to Chris James. James was followed by Jason Blocker,
Bill Morrow, and Rhoads.
Stock
car racing action returns to the Davenport Speedway next Friday night, July
2nd, with the Midwest Jalopies as an added attraction.

Buesling,
Bull, and Brown Win at Davenport
by Mike
McGuire
DAVENPORT, Ia. (June 11, 2010) – Stock car racing action returned to the
Davenport Speedway Friday night with the evening’s program sponsored by
Casey’s General Stores. Over one hundred cars were on hand to do battle on
the Davenport quarter-mile oval.
The
Petersen Plumbing and Heating IMCA Late Model feature was tough on both cars
and drivers as only six of the twenty-one starters reached the finish. The
first victim was Mike Guldenpfennig, who flipped in turn one on lap three.
Mike walked away from the accident.
The
racing resumed with Matt Ryan out in front. Lap eleven saw Nate Buesling take
over the top spot. Buesling would lead the rest of the way for the win, with
Ryan holding on for second. Through late race attrition, Doug Nigh finished
third, followed by Gary Webb and Tony VonDresky.
Late
model heat race wins went to Kevin Blum, Bret Diercks, and Mark Preston.
The
Goacher Towing Pro Mod feature started out at a blistering pace with the first
sixteen laps caution-free. The last four laps were a different story.
Chad
Patch used a front row start to lead the first eleven laps. John Bull muscled
to the lead on lap twelve and on lap seventeen the cautions started coming.
The most
serious caution was a 3-car collision that took out half the top six cars.
Involved in the crash were Patch, Bob Dominacki, and winner of the last three
races at Davenport, Doug Crampton.
Bull
survived for the win, while Tim Arp came from dead last start to finish
second. Thad Wilson finished third, ahead of Ray Cox Jr., and Craig Crawford.
Cary
Brown scored his second Koehler Electric Street Stock feature win of the
season. Brown fended off Matt Werner to take the checkered flag. Brown was
running third when race leaders Scott Griffin and Ron Marks Jr. tangled in
turn one late in the race. Brown inherited the lead on the restart and drove
to the win.
Werner
finished a close second with Bruce Fosdyck Jr third. Marks fought his way back
to a fourth place finish, with Phil Anderson fifth.
Hunter
Wilson collected his first ever EMS IMCA Modified feature win Friday. Hunter
took the lead from Matt Wilson and held off Andrew Burk and Jake Waterman late
in the race to get the win. Burk fought off Waterman’s late charge to take
second with Jake finishing third. Dan Klatt and Jerry Pratt rounded out the
top five.
Warren
Ropp scored his first victory of the 2010 season in the Bulltown Legends of
Iowa feature. Ropp started up front and led all 15 laps. Jeremy Meyer made a
strong bid for the lead before coming in contact with a back marker and
bringing out the caution. Following Ropp to the checkers were Craig
Peekenschnider in second, Keith Meyer third, Mike Mueller fourth, and Dominic
Bates fifth.
A full
field of 4 Stocks were on hand Friday. John Scott grabbed the early lead after
starting on the pole. Mike Morrow would take up the lead a couple laps later.
Morrow would survive the challenges of Chris James and Kile Vohringer who
would both drop out of the race. Morrow would take his second victory of the
season, followed by Kevin Haury, Andy Maberry, and John Scott.
There
will no stock car racing action at the Davenport Speedway next Friday night,
due to the Sturgis on the River motorcycle event. Next race will be the
Mid-Season Championships, Friday June 25th.

Guss
Rockets to Win, Crampton Makes It Three in a Row
by Mike
McGuire
DAVENPORT, Ia. (May 28, 2010) – The Davenport Speedway kicked off Memorial Day
weekend with exciting racing action. The fans were treated first-time winners,
last lap passes, and near perfect weather conditions.
Ray Guss
Jr. returned to tbe winner’s circle in the Petersen Plumbing & Heating, IMCA
Late Model action. Guss was able to get by Bret Diercks on lap seventeen and
hold on for the win. The victory was Guss’ first point race win at Davenport
in 2010.
The race
was halted briefly by a red flag for a 3-car crash on lap 22. Mark Preston,
Cory Goldbeck, and Mike Zemo Jr. were involved in the wreck. All three were
able to walk away from the accident.
When the
race resumed, Guss drove on to the win, Bret Diercks was able to hold second,
but Mike Murphy Jr. used the restart to launch himself up to a third place
finish. Matt Ryan took fourth and Kevin Blum fifth.
Guss,
Diercks, and Preston were heat race winners.
Doug
Crampton led only the last one hundred feet of the Goacher Towing Pro Mod
main, just enough for his third straight Pro Mod win. Crampton started tenth
and had to use every lap and every inch of the racetrack to get the win
Thad
Wilson had taken the lead on lap nine, but came up just a little short at the
checkers. Wilson did everything he could to hold off Crampton, but would have
to settle for a disappointing second. Bob Dominacki led early in the race but
would fade to a third place finish. John Bull and Tim Arp completed the top
five.
The
Koehler Electric Street Stock feature came down to a battle of two drivers.
Cary Brown took the lead of the race on lap three and held it until the white
flag lap. Matt Werner tried to pass Brown a couple of times on the inside,
with no success. Coming to the white flag, Werner went outside of Brown, took
the lead, and took the win. Brown held on for second with Ron Marks Jr. third.
Jeremy Marquette and Bruce Fosdyck Jr. finished fourth and fifth.
The EMS
IMCA Modified feature started with a bang, well at least a loud crash. A
multi-car pile-up, coming to take the green, really reduced the field. When
the race restarted, Terry Rentfro went to the lead. However, Rentfro would be
involved in the next yellow and have to go to the pits.
Jerry
Pratt took over the lead and held the spot all the way to the checkers. Ray
Cox Jr started tenth, but would end up in second. Todd Dykema, Josh Starr, and
Greg Wilson rounded out the top five and were the only other cars running at
the race’s end.
Dominic
Bates brought home the win in an entertaining Legend Car feature. Cars were
moving in and out of the top five throughout the entire race. The only
position that didn’t change was the leader. Bates jumped into the lead from
the outside pole and led all fifteen laps. The victory was his first in a
Legend Car.
Matt
Montieth finished second and was followed Craig Peekenschnieder, Jeremy Meyer,
and Mike Mueller, in that order.
Mike
Morrow blistered the field in the 4 Stock feature event. Unfortunately his car
did pass post-race inspection and was disqualified. Kevin Haury, who had led
early in the race was credited with the win. Luke Thurness was scored second,
with Andy Maberry third, and Bill Morrow fourth.

Brian
Harris Victorious in Davenport Speedway Return
by Mike
McGuire
DAVENPORT, Ia. (May 21, 2010) – The Davenport Speedway was able to get their
second point race of the 2010 season in Friday evening. Rain during the week
made for a soft and tacky racetrack, which led to exciting racing action in
all six classes.
Late
model racer Brian Harris had not competed in weekly racing at the Davenport
Speedway in several years, but that did not keep him from finding his way back
to victory lane. Harris took the lead of the Petersen Plumbing and Heating
IMCA Late Model feature on a lap seven restart, and led the remaining laps, en
route to the win.
Kevin
Blum, who seemed to be battling someone for position the entire race, finished
second. Cory Goldbeck ran a solid race to finish third, followed by Ray Guss
Jr. and Mark Preston.
Guss,
Matt Ryan, and Bret Diercks all won late model heats.
The
scariest moment of the evening came early in the Goacher Towing Service Pro
Mod feature. On lap 2 of the 20-lap main, Bob Dominacki ended up on his roof
in turn three, bringing out the red flag. Dominacki was able to exit the
racecar without serious injury.
When the
green flag waved again, Rick Ratliff resumed the lead. Ratliff would hold the
top spot until lap 12, when Doug Crampton powered his way to the lead.
Crampton would take the win, his second straight of the season. John Bull
survived to finish second, with Ratliff third. Tim Arp and Craig Crawford were
fourth and fifth respectively.
Matt
Werner took the lead of the Koehler Electric Street Stock feature after a lap
three restart. Werner led the remainder of the way to take his first points
win of the year. Ron Marks Jr. finished second, followed by Jeremy Marquette,
Cary Brown, and Rob Nylin. Marquette and Bruce Fosdyck Jr. won the Street
Stock heat races.
Jacob
Waterman collected his second straight EMS IMCA Modified feature win. Waterman
started 7th and chased down race leader Mike Fluegel to take the lead on lap
seven. Joe Jones Jr. also passed Fluegel for second , with Mike holding on for
third. Terry Rentfro and Dustin Crear completed the top five.
Veteran
racer Ron Boyse made his first appearance in an INEX Legend Car subbing for
Warren Ropp. Boyse also won his first Legends feature, although not in the
conventional way.
Boyse
was third at the white flag. The two leaders, Brian Peterson and Mike Mueller
made contact in turn one bringing out the caution. Boyse was awarded the win,
with Chad Hale second and BJ Bates third.
Mike
Morrow shot to the front of the 4 Stock feature and never looked back. Morrow
led all ten laps, grabbing his first win of the season at Davenport. Luke
Thurness started third, dropped out of the top five briefly, and stormed back
to finish second. Last week’s winner Kevin Haury was third, followed by Dale
Tucker and Chris James.
Bike
races for the kids were held after the racing action had concluded.

Bret
Diercks Scores Davenport LM Victory
by Mike
McGuire
DAVENPORT, Ia. (May 14, 2010) -- After three weeks of agonizing rainouts, the
Davenport Speedway finally got the Koehler Electric Season Opener in the
record books.
The
first point race of 2010 is certainly one that Bret Diercks will remember.
Diercks led all 25 laps of the Petersen Plumbing and Heating - IMCA Late Model
feature event.
Diercks
started on the pole, next to Mike Zemo Jr. While Bret was en route to victory
lane, Zemo was not so fortunate. Zemo flipped his car in turn one, on lap
four. He escaped without serious injury.
While
Diercks was comfortably in the lead a group of four racers were making their
way to the front. Terry Neal started 14th and worked his way to a second place
finish. After starting tenth, Mike Murphy Jr. would come home third. Kevin
Blum started 11th and wound up fourth. Ray Guss Jr. was also in the advancing
pack, but was sidelined by a flat tire just past midway. Nate Buesling rounded
out the top five.
Doug
Crampton and Tim Arp started on the front row of the Goacher Towing Pro
Modified feature. Arp jumped out to the early lead, but after a lap three
caution, Crampton would come back to take qway the top pot. Crampton would
later get a challenge from Thad Wilson. Wilson got beside Crampton several
times, but could not make a pass for the lead.
Crampton
would race to the checkers with Wilson holding on to second. John Bull came
froma fourth row starting spot to finish third, followed by Milo Veloz Jr. and
Arp.
Cary
Brown used a last lap pass to grab the win in the Koehler Electric Street
Stock feature. Brown blasted by Joe Beal to take the victory. Beal started on
the pole and had led the first eleven laps before giving up the lead and
settling for second. Matt Werner finished third, followed by Bruce Fosdyck
Jr., and Jeremy Marquette.
Jacob
Waterman dominated the EMS IMCA Modified main. Waterman started on the outside
of the front row and led the entire distance of the green, white, checkered
race. Jerry Pratt took second, followed closely by Max Corporon in third. Joe
Jones Jr. and Randy Christner rounded out the top five
Kevin
Haury of Stockton, got out in front of the 4 Stock feature early and drove to
his first feature win of the season. Luke Thurness finished a solid second
with Mike Morrow overcoming an early problem to finish third. Jake Montoya and
Randy Sinning completed the top five. Sinning also won the 4 Stock heat race.

Rain
Strikes Again … Davenport Speedway Cancelled
DAVENPORT, Ia. (May 7, 2010) – For the third consecutive week, rain has washed
out the Koehler Electric Season Opener at the Davenport Speedway. Over an inch
of rain Friday morning, has made track preparation on the quarter-mile dirt
oval impossible for tonight.
While rainouts are a pain for racers, fans and promoters alike, they really
hurt drivers in the IMCA Late Model and IMCA Modified divisions. Racers in
these two classes are competing for state and national points, as well as the
local track championship.
Davenport Speedway regular, Kevin Blum of Colona, Ill., was the 2009 IMCA Late
Model national champion. Ray Guss Jr. of Milan, and Matt Ryan of Davenport
also placed in the top ten of IMCA Late Model national points last season.
The
season opener will be held next Friday, May 14th. Five of the six weekly
classes will be competing: Petersen Plumbing & Heating IMCA Late Models,
Goacher Towing Pro Mods, Engineered Maintenance Service IMCA Modifieds,
Koehler Electric Street Stocks, and 4 Cylinder Stocks.
Pit gates at Davenport open at 4 p.m. and the grandstand opens at 5pm. Hot
laps are at 6pm and racing starts at 6:30pm.
The Davenport Speedway is located at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds, on
West Locust Street, in Davenport.

Friday, April 30th. Five of the six weekly classes will be competing: Petersen

Guss
Nabs Deery Series Cash at Davenport
by Mike
McGuire
DAVENPORT, Ia. (April 16, 2010) – Ray Guss Jr., of Milan, Ill., took home the
hardware for the Deery Brothers Summer Series race at the Davenport Speedway
Friday night. The IMCA dirt late model ace started sixth in the 40-lap
feature, but moved up to second by lap six. He then set his sight on race
leader and series points leader Mark Burgtorf.
Before
Guss could overtake the leader, Jason Rauen would make a run at second. During
a rash of cautions between laps 18 and 22, Rauen broke something in the front
end and was forced to the pits. On lap 24, Guss would get past Burgtorf and
take the lead. A lap later, Burgtorf’s ride came to a halt, ending his race.
Guss
would lead the remaining laps for the win. Andy Eckrich, who qualified through
the B-main would finish strong to take second. Jeff Aikey came home third. Tom
Darbyshire was fourth and Justin Reed fifth.
The
Deery win was Guss’ second at Davenport. His first came in 1999. Fifty-seven
late models took part in the event that was sponsored by O’Reilly Auto Parts.
Milo
Veloz Jr., couldn’t have asked for better luck in the Pro Mod main, as he took
home the victory. Veloz was trying to hang on to a top five finish until the
yellow flags started to fly with three laps to go. Thad Wilson had led from
the drop of the green, but had to pull his car into the pits. On an ensuing
restart, new race leaders Matt Stein and John Bull had trouble in turn one and
were sent to the rear.
That put
Veloz up front and he did not waste the opportunity. Veloz drove to the win
with Ray Cox Jr. second. Bull recovered nicely and stormed his way to a third
place finish. Bob Dominacki and Tim Current completed the top five.
Matt
Werner topped a small field of street stocks Friday. Werner started on the
front row and never looked back. Joe Beal recovered from an early caution to
finish second. Jeremy Marquette finished third, Rob Nylin fourth, and Bryan
Ritter fifth.
Jacob
Waterman blistered the field in the IMCA Modified portion of the show.
Waterman started fifth, but quickly drove to the front of a race that was
shortened due to cautions. Matt Wilson managed to avoid most of the accidents
and finished second. Tony VonDresky, Terry Rentfro, and Max Corporon completed
the top five.
Ricky
