Pepsi USA Nationals Deery rained out again
WEST BURLINGTON, Iowa (Sept. 19) – Sunday’s rescheduled Pepsi USA Nationals
Deery Brothers Summer Series show at 34 Raceway has met the same fate as the
program originally planned for Saturday.
Rain, standing water and less than ideal track conditions combined to force
cancellation of what was to have been the final event of the 2010 tour for IMCA
Late Models. Jason Frankel had won the first qualifying heat and pole start for
the main event, and T.J. Criss won the J & J Steel Ironman Challenge on Friday.
Track officials will contact participating drivers this week. Fans who purchased
two night passes can mail them to 34 Raceway, at PO Box 85 in West Burlington,
Iowa, 52655 to get a refund for the second night.
Ray Guss Jr. of Milan, Ill., wrapped up the series championship with his Sept. 6
win at Boone Speedway during the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals. Andy
Eckrich of Iowa City is the series rookie of the year.
The 24th annual tour drew a total of 625 entries for 15 completed events. The
resulting 41.67 average is the third highest in series history, behind only the
42.33 mark set in 2000 and the 41.81 average in 2006.
Drivers finishing in the top 15 earn shares of a $20,400 point fund.

WEST BURLINGTON, Iowa (Sept. 18) – The second night of 34
Raceway’s Pepsi USA Nationals Deery Brothers Summer Series show
has been postponed because of rain.

Criss wins Ironman Challenge, Frankel earns pole start for Pepsi USA
Nationals Deery feature at 34
WEST BURLINGTON, Iowa (Sept. 17) – T.J. Criss already owns one win while Jason
Frankel will have the pole start in his quest for a second straight Pepsi USA
Nationals Deery Brothers Summer Series title.
Frankel topped the first of five heats Friday at 34 Raceway to earn the inside
front row start when the green flag flies in Saturday’s $10,000 to win IMCA Late
Model tour main event. Nate Beuseling topped the second heat and will start
outside Frankel.
Lonnie Bailey, Boone McLaughlin and Andy Eckrich were also heat winners and will
line up in the third through fifth spots. Runners-up from the heats will start

provisional starters will complete the 26-car grid, including the non-qualified
driver with Friday’s fast time, the hard charger from heat and “B” races, top
two non-qualifiers based on series point standings and a track provisional.
Denny Woodworth posted Friday’s fast time.
A minimum of $500 will be paid to start the 100 lap main event, with another

Ironman Challenge for drivers with perfect attendance through the first 15
events of the series.
Two cautions interrupted the 20 lap event. Terry Neal couldn’t get close enough
to mount a serious challenge after the final yellow, which came out with four
laps left. Mark Preston, Andy Eckrich and series champion Ray Guss Jr. rounded
out the top five.
Fifty one Late Models were in the pits for the traditional tour finale at West
Burlington, upping the average car count per event to 42.25 cars this season.

Josh has the Most at the end to win Lee County Deery
DONNELLSON, Iowa (Sept. 4) – He didn’t lead for much more than 30 feet of the
race, but they were the right 30 feet.
Josh Most had fans at Lee County Speedway on their feet for the final circuits
of Saturday’s Deery Brothers Summer Series feature, catching race-long leader
Jason Perry coming out of the final turn and pulling ahead to take the $2,000 by
inches when the front pair reached the flagstand.
Most had to pass more than his fair share of IMCA Late Model tour foes over the
course of the 35 lapper. He’d started 15th after qualifying from his “B”
feature, went to the pits on lap six after mistakenly thinking he’d cut a tire
and had to restart at the back of the pack.
Flying through the field, he took second from Rob Toland with three laps to go
and was just a car length back when Perry got the white flag.
The win was Most’s Deery career second. Perry’s runner-up showing was the best
finish of his brief series career.
Rounding out the top five were Toland, Justin Reed and Jeff Aikey. Point leader
Ray Guss Jr. was 10th and can clinch the series crown by taking a green flag in
his heat race in the Monday, Sept. 6 IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals show
at Boone Speedway.
Tyler Bruening drew the pole but the third starting Perry was in front when the
first lap was scored. He’d stay there following a series of early restarts,
putting some distance on the rest of the field as Toland and Aikey went back and
forth over second.
Most, meanwhile, picked off cars one and two as a time as he worked his way up
from the back. The final caution came on lap 23 and it was obvious when he drove
by Toland that Most would be a factor at the finish.
After reeling in Perry, Most went to the extreme high line on the final turn,
getting just enough momentum to beat Perry to the stripe.
Terry Neal moved up 12 spots and Tom Darbyshire advanced 13 positions in running
sixth and seventh, respectively. Provisional starter Charlie McKenna was a plus
10 on the night, finishing 12th.
Most also won the drawing for the $250 bonus from Sunoco.
A dozen of the 15 drivers eligible for the “Drive For Five” payday qualified for
the feature. Toland came closest to collecting what would have been a $3,000
bonus by finishing third.
Drivers who missed no more than one of the regular point races at Donnellson
this season were in the running for $5,000 to win Saturday evening.
Pit gates open at 10 a.m. and the grandstand opens at 1 p.m. on Labor Day at
Boone. Hot laps are at 2 p.m. and racing starts at 3 p.m.
The finale is Friday and Saturday, Sep. 17-18 when 34 Raceway at West Burlington
hosts the $10,000 to win Pepsi USA Nationals.

Burgtorf continues Quincy Deery domination
QUINCY, Ill. (Sept. 3) – Mark Burgtorf’s mastery of his hometown track continued
Friday night as the IMCA Late Model ace led all 40 laps of the Deery Brothers
Summer Series main event at Quincy Raceway.
Burgtorf’s green to checkers run at the front of the rescheduled Titan Wheel and
Tire special paid $3,000. The tour victory was his career ninth at Quincy and
26th overall, second on the all-time Deery list to Jeff Aikey’s 54.
Point leader Ray Guss Jr. challenged briefly but settled for second. Denny
Woodworth, Rob Toland and Mark Preston rounded out the top five.
Burgtorf drew the outside front row start and led through five cautions that
slowed the first half of the race. Guss moved up from fifth starting and made
his try just after midway, but that bid fell short and Burgtorf kept the door
shut the rest of the way.
Toland qualified from his “B” feature and flew into the top four after being
involved in one of the early yellows and restarting at the rear. T.J. Criss took
a provisional and also capitalized on the 15 lap green flag session that ended
the feature, advancing 13 positions.
Now four time Deery winner this season, Burgtorf had been tied with Curt Martin
on the career wins list.
Guss won the $250 Sunoco bonus drawing. Friday’s show had been postponed from
June because of rain.

Nine years later, Miller returns to Deery victory lane
DES MOINES, Iowa (Aug. 16) – Nine years to the day he last won a Deery Brothers
Summer Series feature, Darren Miller raced his way back to victory lane in the
tour for IMCA Late Models.
Miller topped the Monday night main event at the Iowa State Fairgrounds Speedway
in Des Moines, taking the lead away from Ray Guss Jr. following an early restart
and running in front to the end of the 35-lapper.
Guss pulled to within three car lengths chasing Miller in lapped traffic, but
once clear of the back runners Miller pulled away again and took the $2,000
checkers comfortably ahead of Guss. “B” winner Todd Cooney, Tom Darbyshire and
Jeremiah Hurst rounded out the top five.
Series point leader Guss drew the pole for the state fair feature and led the
first circuit. Miller used a lap two restart to his advantage to pass Guss for
the point, setting sail after the second and final caution of the contest came
out when Kevin Blum got into the wall on lap seven.
Cooney had advanced nine spots and into the top four by midway. Four laps later,
Miller was negotiating lapped traffic.
Guss made up ground before Miller got through the pack with five laps to go and
edged ahead again.
The victory was Miller’s Deery career third and first since Aug. 16 of 2001,
when he won the Pepsi USA Nationals at 34 Raceway in West Burlington.
He’d run second in his one previous series start this season, on July 28 at
Knoxville.
T.J. Criss won the drawing for the $250 bonus from Sunoco.
Next up on the Deery schedule is the rescheduled Friday, Sept. 3 Titan Tire and
Wheel Shootout at Quincy, Ill., Raceway, which pays $3,000 to win and a minimum
of $300 to start. Night two of the weekend doubleheader is Saturday, Sept. 4 at
Lee County Speedway in Donnellson.
The Late Model tour takes top billing on the Monday, Sept. 6 opening night

on the fair program, along with Karl Chevrolet dirt trucks.
More information is
available from promoter Mick Trier at 515 201-5526 or at the
www.jjamracing.net website.
Eighteen previous Deery Series races have
been held at Des Moines since 1990, all but one of them in August.
Six-time and defending tour champion Jeff
Aikey of Waterloo owns five of his all-time best 54 Deery wins in the Capitol
City. Marshalltown’s Darrel DeFrance, a three-time winner at Des Moines, will
extend his streak of series perfection to 364 consecutive events next week.
Four feature wins have helped Ray Guss
Jr. of Milan, Ill., build a sizable lead in the point race heading to Des
Moines. Mark Burgtorf of Quincy, Ill., has three wins to go with no shortage
of bad mechanical luck this season, while Aikey has won twice and Rob Toland
of Davenport and Andy Eckrich of Iowa City once each.
Eckrich is the leading rookie campaigner,
is second in the point standings and also the most recent visitor to victory
lane, on Aug. 3 at Farley.
Deery
Brothers Summer Series top 20 point standings – 1. Ray Guss Jr., Milan,
Ill., 528; 2. Andy Eckrich, Iowa City, 459; 3. Jeff Aikey, Waterloo, 451; 4.

Eckrich outruns Farley
field for first Deery win
FARLEY, Iowa (Aug. 3) – A first-time
winner took the $2,000 checkers Tuesday night, in the first Deery Brothers
Summer Series event at Farley Speedway in nearly seven years.
Andy Eckrich ran away from the rest of
the IMCA Late Model tour feature field, leading the last 43 of 50 circuits.
Runner-up Terry Neal was half a lap off the pace when Eckrich crossed the
stripe.
Eckrich already owned a pair of second
place finishes in main event starts and was the top rookie in series standings
heading into the Tornado Tuesday program.
Point leader Ray Guss Jr., defending
champion Jeff Aikey and Mark Preston rounded out the top five. Charlie McKenna
worked his way up to sixth from the 24th starting spot to score
hard charger honors and also pocketed the $250 Sunoco drawing bonus.
Aikey, winner of the last Deery race at
Farley, in 2003, started on the pole and ran in front as cautions slowed the
first seven laps.
Eckrich took over from the point, dealing
with a myriad of cautions that finally came to an end on lap 36. The race ran
green the rest of the way but Eckrich was clearly in a class by himself,
winning handily.
McKenna had to start his drive toward the
front twice, first from the initial green flag and then after advancing to
midpack, being involved in a caution and then restarting in the rear.
Tire issues deflated the hopes of two
other contenders, Kevin Blum and Jason Rauen.
Blum started outside row one, exited
early with two rear flats, then raced his way back to fifth and eventually
settled for seventh place pay.
Rauen made an even more impressive charge
after making an early bid for the lead, then driving off with a broken left
rear wheel.
He tagged the back of the back and
rocketed to second before being kayoed for good by a cut tire.
McKenna, Blum and 14th place
finisher T.J. Criss all piloted borrowed rides for the midweek special.
With 11 events in the books, the next
Deery date is Monday, Aug. 16 at the Iowa State Fairgrounds Speedway in Des
Moines.
Four races follow the end of the regular
IMCA Late Model point season, on Sept. 3 at Quincy, Ill., Raceway, Sept. 4 at
Lee County Speedway in Donnellson, Sept. 6 on opening night of the IMCA
Speedway Motors Super Nationals at Boone Speedway and Sept. 17-18, when 34
Raceway hosts the $10,000 to win Pepsi USA Nationals.

Guss keeps rolling with
Deery Series win at Knoxville
KNOXVILLE, Iowa (July 28) – The Guss
Express kept rolling Wednesday night, this time with a stop in victory lane at
Knoxville Raceway.
Ray Guss Jr. took command on the 10th
circuit and ran in front the last 26 times around the fast half-mile in
winning the Deery Brothers Summer Series main event and adding to his lead in
point standings for the IMCA Late Model tour.
The $2,000 win was his second straight in
the series, his third in the last four events and fourth of the season, as
well as the 20th of his Deery career.
Darren Miller ran second while hard
charger Jeff Aikey got the final transfer spot from his “B” feature, passed 16
cars and finish third. Jeremiah Hurst and Brian Harris, another “B” qualifier,
completed the top five.
Jay Stewart and Jeff Guengerich took
turns up front as yellows slowed the early going. A lap three collision
spelled the end for both Kevin Blum and T.J. Criss and Aikey cracked the top
five on lap 10.
Guss hustled into the lead, then raced to
a straightaway lead before another caution just after midway. Charlie McKenna
got too high on the restart, caught the berm and rolled, but walked away.
The charge by Aikey took him briefly into
second before Miller drove by and chased Guss to the checkers.
Robby Warner won the $250 Sunoco drawing.
Jared Timmerman topped the $500 Karl
Chevrolet Northern SportModpart feature, also part of the Harris Clash program
postponed because of inclement weather three weeks ago.
Cayden Carter spelled Timmerman at the
point before relinquishing the lead with nine laps left, then getting caught
up in a multi-car tangle.
Timmeman led Dylan Book, Nate Chodur, “B”
qualifier Jeremy Embrey and Jim Gillenwater across the stripe, Book just a car
length back. Seventy-one Nortern SportMods were entered Wednesday night.
Six events remain on the 2010 Deery
schedule, the next at Farley Speedway on Tuesday, Aug. 3.

Deery Series headed to
Knoxville for rescheduled Harris Clash show
KNOXVILLE, Iowa (July 22) – Deery
Brothers Summer Series drivers have some catching up to do, when they head to
Knoxville Raceway for a $2,000 to win Wednesday, July 28 IMCA Late Model tour
event.
What was to have been the second night of
the Harris Clash special was postponed from July 7 because of rain and wet
track conditions. No changes in times result from the rescheduling as pit
gates will open at 2 p.m., the grandstand opens at 6 p.m., hot laps start at
6:30 p.m. and racing begins at 7:15 p.m.
Grandstand admission is $12 for adults
and $3 for kids. Pit passes are $25 and no one under the age of 16 will be
allowed in the pit area.
Karl Chevrolet Northern
SportMods are also on the program. Pre-entries are not required in either
division.
Ray Guss Jr. of Milan, Ill., topped last
night’s Deery Series event at Oskaloosa to strengthen his grip on the tour
point lead. Despite breaking in his heat, Mark Burgtorf of Quincy, Ill.,
remains second in the standings with Andy Eckrich of Iowa City in third. Terry
Neal of Ely is fourth while six-time and defending champion Jeff Aikey of
Waterloo is fifth.
Aikey picked up a pair of his series
career-leading 54 feature wins at Knoxville, in 1995 and 1996. Tommy Elston
of Keokuk paced the Harris Clash contest there last year, the first time the
series was part of the event.
Marshalltown’s Darrel DeFrance will
extend his perfect Deery Series attendance record to 362 consecutive events
when the gates open at Knoxville.
The 11th of 16 dates on the
2010 Deery Series schedule is at Farley Speedway on Tuesday, Aug. 3.

Guss adds to point lead
with Southern Iowa Deery win
OSKALOOSA, Iowa (July 21) – A long run at
the front Wednesday night led to the third Deery Brothers Summer Series win of
the season for Ray Guss Jr.
Guss led the last 25 times around the
track in the 35-lapper at Southern Iowa Speedway, pulling away from persistent
Andy Eckrich following a late restart to earn the $2,000 top prize and add to
his lead in point standings for the IMCA Late Model tour.
Jay Johnson, Terry Neal and Jeremiah
Hurst rounded out the top five in the midweek show, during the Mahaska County
Fair.
Charlie McKenna enjoyed one of the
fastest rides not on the midway, leading the first 10 circuits from his
outside front row starting spot. Two of the six cautions that slowed the
contest came during McKenna’s turn at the point, but he stayed in control both
times the green flag came back out.
The sixth starting Guss gradually reeled
McKenna in, making an inside move in turn four to take the lead away and
running at the head of the pack the rest of the way.
Eckrich and McKenna traded the second
spot much of that distance, but their entertaining battle came to an end on
lap 32 when McKenna’s right rear wheel broke, sending him hard into the turn
three wall and bringing out the red flag.
McKenna was not injured, though his ride
sustained considerable damage. Eckrich tried an inside approach of his own and
pulled alongside Guss after the restart, but was rebuffed and wound up second,
some six car lengths behind the winner.
Guss now owns 19 trophies from his Deery
career, tied with Rob Toland for fifth on the all-time wins list. Eckrich’s
second place finish matched his career best showing. He’d also chased Guss to
the checkers at Davenport Speedway in April.
Engine problems knocked Mark Burgtorf out
of his heat and he did not attempt to run a “B” feature. He remains second in
the standings, now 55 points off the pace. Eckrich is another nine points
back.
The 10th of 16 events on the
2010 schedule is Wednesday, July 28, when the series is at Knoxville Raceway
for the Harris Clash program postponed by rain from July 8. Pit gates will
open at 2 p.m., the grandstand opens at 6 p.m., hot laps are at 6:30 p.m. and
racing starts at 7:15 p.m.
IMCA Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods
are also on the card that evening.

Deery drought ends for Toland at
Independence
INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (June 30) – What
happened at the back of the pack went a long way in determining who finished
at the front of the field in Wednesday’s Deery Brothers Summer Series feature
at Independence Motor Speedway.
Rob Toland got the better of a
back-and-forth battle with Kevin Blum, then outran Terry Neal in the race to
the $2,000 checkers. The IMCA Late Model tour victory was Toland’s career 19th
and his first on the circuit since June of 2007.
Mark Burgtorf, a three-time winner this
season and second in the point standings coming into the night, started on the
pole and led the first 12 laps. Burgtorf was about to get into lapped traffic
when two of the back runners checked up and he was unable to avoid a collision
with Joel Callahan, joining defending champion Jeff Aikey as an early
casualty.
Toland and Blum started on the front row
in the ensuing re-start and traded the front spot four times, Toland on the
bottom of the 3/8-mile oval while Blum ran the next line up. After running
virtually side by side for a dozen laps, Toland finally settled into first for
good just after midway.
Neal caught Blum for second with eight
laps left but couldn’t make up enough distance to challenge Toland before the
end of the 50-lapper.
Dan Shelliam and point leader Ray Guss
Jr. rounded out the top five.
Winner of the $250 Sunoco drawing was
Travis Smock.
With eight races in and eight to go, the
next Deery date is Wednesday, July 7, when the series is joined by Karl
Chevrolet Northern SportMods on night two of the Harris Clash at Knoxville
Raceway. The grandstand opens at 6 p.m., hot laps are at 6:30 p.m. and racing
starts at 7:15 p.m.

Rain postpones
Sunday Deery show at Quincy
QUINCY, Ill. (June
13) – Wet weather is the winner of another IMCA tour event, this time postponing
Sunday’s Deery Brothers Summer Series Late Model show at Quincy Raceway.
The decision to
delay the Titan Wheel and Tire Shootout special came after nearly an inch of
rain on Saturday, more of the same Sunday morning and continued forecasts for
inclement weather later in the day.

Guss repeats Deery Series heroics at
Boone
BOONE, Iowa (May 31) – Another holiday
event at Boone Speedway resulted in another Deery Brothers Summer Series
feature victory for Ray Guss Jr.
Guss cruised to the $2,000 checkers at
Boone on Memorial Day while adding to his lead in the IMCA Late Model tour
point standings. Terry Neal, the driver Guss passed to win the IMCA Speedway
Motors Super Nationals Labor Day event last fall, was rewarded for his
Herculean effort just to get a car ready to race with a second place finish.
Joel Callahan, Mark Burgtorf and Matt
Strassheim rounded out the top five. The 40-lap contest was interrupted by
caution just once, on the second circuit.
After a mishap in weekly action, Neal and
his crew had spent the day getting a backup car ready for its first action
since the series show on the asphalt at Hawkeye Downs in August of 2009.
Neal started outside front row and led
the first 16 laps. Guss had taken the green from outside row two and was on
Neal’s back bumper for most of the early going before slipping inside for the
lead.
The front pair caught up to the back of
the field shortly after midway and changed lines adroitly to work their way
through. Mark Burgtorf raced his way up to second before Neal and Callahan
passed him back with two laps left.
The Monday night win was the career 18th
for Guss, tying him with Neal and Rob Toland for fifth on the all-time tour
victory list.
Provisional starter Kevin Blum made the
most progress toward the front, advancing 10 places after starting 24th.
Callahan was the winner of the $250
Sunoco bonus.
The eighth of 16 events on the 2010
schedule is Sunday, June 13 when the $3,000 to win, minimum $300 to start
Titan Wheel and Tire Shootout at Quincy, Ill., Raceway becomes part of the
tour. Pit gates open at 2 p.m. and the grandstand opens at 4 p.m. Hot laps are
at 5 p.m. and racing starts at 5:30 p.m.

just five points off the pace.
Jeff Aikey of Waterloo has won twice this
season to boost his career leading total to 54 tour triumphs. The six-time and
defending Deery Series champion, Darrel DeFrance of Marshalltown and Andy
Eckrich of Iowa City round out the top five in points.

Aikey can’t be caught in Marshalltown
Deery
MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (May 18) – There was
plenty of passing throughout the field, but the one IMCA Late Model no one
could catch was Jeff Aikey’s.
Aikey took the lead on the fifth of 50
laps in winning Tuesday’s Deery Brothers Summer Series feature at Marshalltown
Speedway. The $2,000 victory, the career 54th for the six-time and
defending tour champion, came in front of fellow heavy hitters Ray Guss Jr.
and Mark Burgtorf.
Jay Johnson and hard charger Terry Neal
rounded out the top five.
Greg Kastli started on the pole and led
the first four circuits before giving way on the high side to Aikey following
the first re-start of the contest.
Cautions scattered throughout the race
took backrunners out of play and no lapped cars were scored before Aikey took
the checkers.
Guss, the series point leader, started 11th
and made his way to second by midway but couldn’t mount a challenge. Burgtorf
re-started at the rear following an early spin and made his way back to third.
He’s now five points behind Guss in the updated standings.
“B” feature qualifier Neal advanced 14
positions from his original starting spot. Tyler Bruening also made his way
from his “B” to sixth in the feature, moving up 10 places.
Boone McLaughlin was a plus 12 on the
night for eighth while provisional starter Matt Strassheim moved up 13 places
to 10th.
Darrel DeFrance also had to re-start at
the rear early on and raced his way into the top four before a cut tire sent
him to the pits. He returned to salvage 16th place points.
The win was Aikey’s third at
Marshalltown. His first came on July 9, 1987, in the seventh event of the
inaugural series season. He also won there three years ago.
McLaughlin won the $250 Sunoco bonus.
Brett Moffitt topped the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod main event.
Next up on the Deery schedule is the
traditional Memorial Day show at Boone Speedway. IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, IMCA
Sunoco Hobby Stocks, Northern SportMods and the local dwarf class complete the

Dubuque Deery Series checkers fly for
Burgtorf
DUBUQUE, Iowa (April 18) – Race fans went
home buzzing about the start, the finish and every lap in between of the first
ever Deery Brothers Summer Series event at Dubuque Fairgrounds Speedway
Mark Burgtorf got back to his winning
ways Sunday night, reeling in long-time leader Ray Guss Jr. with seven laps
left to capture his third $2,000 victory in five IMCA Late Model tour events
this spring.
The early excitement came on the opening
lap, when Kevin Blum flipped in the first set of turns. IMCA’s defending
national champion was not injured but two wreckers were called to transport
his car back to the pits.
Guss ended his night as the runner-up and
saw his advantage over Burgtorf in the point race pared to four markers. Dan
Shelliam made the second feature appearance of his Deery career and finished
third. Rookie contenders Jason Rauen and Andy Eckrich rounded out the top
five.
Pole starter Jeremiah Hurst led the first
two laps before giving way to Rauen. A myriad of cautions slowed the race
before Guss took the lead on lap nine.
Guss stretched his advantage to most of a
straightaway midway through the 50-lap feature, Burgtorf, Shelliam, Mike
Murphy Jr. and Rauen used all the lines and weaved around back runners, making
up ground on Guss during a lengthy fight for the second spot.
That edge eventually went to Burgtorf,
who went to the top to pass Guss for the point on lap 44. Guss kept the race
close, crossing the finish line a couple car lengths back. Eckrich worked his
way to fifth while hard charger Murphy moved up 10 spots and finished sixth.
Now tied with Curt Martin for second on
the career Deery wins list with 25 checkers, Burgtorf matched his total for
the entire 2009 campaign with the Sunday checkers. He’d won a personal best
four times in 2001, on the way to earning his second of three career tour
championships.
Forty-four Late Models were in the pits
at Dubuque. That put the tour average at 52.4 entries for each of the five
April events, about five cars better than last year’s pace.
Guss won the $250 Sunoco bonus.
With the start of the regular Late Model
point season scheduled this Friday, the Deery Series is idle until resuming
Tuesday, May 18 at Marshalltown Speedway.

Aikey dominates Jackson County Deery for
53rd career IMCA Late Model tour win
MAQUOKETA, Iowa (April 17) – It took
seven laps for Jeff Aikey to get to the front of the Deery Brothers Summer
Series feature field at Jackson County Speedway.
Once he got there, the rest of the IMCA
Late Model tour race was for second.
Aikey caught Jay Johnson and led the last
43 times around the track Saturday night, passing half the pack before his big
lead was erased by a caution with 13 laps to go. He checked out again
following the re-start, taking the checkers comfortably ahead of hard charger
Terry Neal.
The win paid $2,000 and was Aikey’s Deery
career 53rd. The six time and defending tour champion had also won
at Maquoketa in 1998 and 2002.
Neal qualified from his “B” race and
passed 16 cars in collecting runner-up honors. Mark Burgtorf, series point
leader Ray Guss Jr. and Josh Most completed the top five. Johnson was sixth.
Guss won the second “B” and advanced 13
positions. Tyler Bruening pocketed the $250 Sunoco bonus.
The 49 Late Model entries made for a
Deery track record at Jackson County, topping 42 car counts for events in 2004
and again in 2006.
Forty-nine entries on Saturday also
pushed the total to 12,816 for the 356 series events held since 1987. That
pencils out to a precise average of 36 cars a night.
Wrapping up the weekend tripleheader is
the first-ever visit by the series to Dubuque Fairgrounds Speedway on Sunday.

Guss runs away from Davenport Deery field
DAVENPORT, Iowa (April 16) – Ray Guss Jr.
couldn’t have asked for much more from Friday’s Deery Brothers Summer Series
feature at Davenport Speedway.
Guss earned $2,000 for his first IMCA
Late Model tour victory of the season and took over the top spot in the early
series point standings. Mark Burgtorf had come to town looking for his third
win in as many 2010 races but broke shortly after relinquishing the lead to
Guss before midway and was relegated to 18th.
Andy Eckrich fashioned a runner-up finish
in just the second feature appearance of his Deery career. Six-time champion
Jeff Aikey bounced back from a tough opening weekend for third while Tom
Darbyshire and Justin Reed rounded out the top five.
The 50-lapper started with Burgtorf
taking the green from the outside of row one. He ran at the front with
pressure eventually coming from the sixth starting Guss and the eighth
starting Jason Rauen.
Frequent yellows slowed the contest, two
casualties being Rauen and Burgtorf. Guss had finally caught up and was first
across the line on lap 22, then Burgtorf broke half a lap later and coasted to
a stop on the backstretch.
The race ran without caution from that
point and Guss checked out on everybody, winning his 17th Deery feature and
his first at Davenport since 1999. The real fight was for second and Eckrich
eventually prevailed in a tussle that frequently saw four or five cars
challenging for the spot.
Eckrich, Darbyshire and Reed all drove
their way into the main event through “B” features. Eckrich advanced 11
positions from his original start while Reed scored hard charger honors,
moving up 15 spots.
Consistent Darrel DeFrance ran sixth in
his 355th career Deery outing. He’s now third in the standings,
seven points behind Guss and one back of Burgtorf.
Brett Diercks
was the $250 Sunoco drawing winner. Fifty-seven cars were entered at Davenport,
right at the series average through the first three of 16 events.
Night two of the weekend tripleheader
takes the series to Jackson County Speedway at Maquoketa on Saturday. Pit
gates open at 4 p.m. and the grandstand opens at 4:30 p.m., hot laps are at

Davenport,
Jackson County, Dubuque dates next for Deery Series
DAVENPORT, Iowa
(April 13) – After opening his 2010 Deery Brothers Summer Series campaign with
back to back feature wins, Mark Burgtorf looks to add another accomplishment to
his already stellar IMCA Late Model tour resume.
Burgtorf owns
three championships and 24 victories over the course of his Deery career. He’s
now won consecutive races for the third time and will try for a third straight
trophy when the series travels to Davenport Speedway on Friday, April 16 for the
first show in a weekend tripleheader.
Night two is
Saturday, April 17 at Jackson County Speedway in Maquoketa. Dubuque Fairgrounds
Speedway hosts its first ever tour event on Sunday, April 18.
Six-time and
defending series champion Jeff Aikey is the last driver to have won three
straight Deery features, in 2000. Curt Martin is the only driver to have
achieved the feat twice in the same season, enroute to the 1990 tour title.
The series
record is four straight wins, established by Gary Webb in 1994 and matched by
Rob Toland in 2004. Not surprisingly, both drivers were Deery champions those
years.
Burgtorf is the
defending race winner at Davenport, where a track record 61 Late Models
contended last April. Aikey has won four of the other 14 previous series events
there.
Pit gates open
at 4 p.m. and the grandstand opens at 5 p.m. Friday at Davenport. Hot laps are
at 6 p.m. and racing starts at 6:30 p.m.
Terry Neal had
won three straight Deery races at Maquoketa before Ray Guss Jr. snapped the
string last summer.
Jackson County
opens the pit gates at 4 p.m. and the grandstand at 4:30 p.m. Hot laps are at
5:30 p.m. and racing begins at 6 p.m.
Grandstand
admission to both Bob Wagener promoted tracks is $14 for adults, $12 for seniors
and teenagers and $6 for kids ages 7-12, with youngsters six and under admitted
free.
IMCA Modifieds
will run for national, ButlerBuilt North Central Region and Allstar Performance
State points Friday and Saturday.
Dubuque becomes
the 40th different track visited by the series in the weekend finale.
Gates open at 4 p.m., the grandstand opens at 5 p.m. and hot laps are set for 6
p.m., with racing to follow.
Grandstand
admission is $15 for adults and $12 for seniors. Students 13 years and older
with a school ID pay $10 while kids 12 and under get in at no charge.
All three main
events pay $2,000 to win and a minimum of $250 to start. Pit passes are $25.
Sixty-eight
different drivers competed at season opening shows April 10 at 34 Raceway and
April 11 at Quincy Raceway.
IMCA’s regular
point season for Late Models begins April 23; the Deery Series resumes with a
Tuesday, May 18 show at Marshalltown Speedway.

Burgtorf makes it two straight with
Sunday Deery Series win at Quincy
QUINCY, Ill. (April 11) – A different
driver challenged at a different track, but the name at the top of the results
for the second Deery Brothers Summer Series event of the season is the same as
at the first.
Mark Burgtorf won his second IMCA Late
Model tour feature in as many nights, topping Sunday’s show at Quincy Raceway.
He’s now an eight-time series winner at his hometown track and raked in $2,000
for his 24th career Deery victory.
Jason Frankel, another Quincy hotshoe,
led for nearly a third of the 50-lapper before finally giving way to Burgtorf
and settled for second.
Rounding out the top five were Ray Guss
Jr., Keith Pratt and Denny Woodworth. A Quincy series record 50 Late Models
were in the pits, two more than the previous mark set in April of 2007.
Pole starter Darrel DeFrance ran in front
of the pack for the first 12 circuits before Frankel used the higher line to
take the lead away.
Burgtorf slipped past DeFrance on lap 18,
shortly before Frankel began encountering backrunners.
Cautions at midway brought the field back
together. Burgtorf maintained his pressure on the leader, passing Frankel
coming out of turn four on lap 34 and then checking out.
Two lapped cars and most of a
straightaway separated Burgtorf and Frankel at the finish.
Woodworth made his way to fifth from the
18th starting spot. Tom Goble earned the hard charger provisional
and moved up 10 positions to 12th. The $250 Sunoco bonus went to
Josh Most.
Burgtorf had to track down and then hold
off Nate Beuseling to collect top dollar in the series opener Saturday at 34
Raceway.
A weekend tripleheader is next on the
schedule, with races Friday, April 16 at Davenport Speedway and Saturday,
April 17 at Jackson County Speedway before the first ever series race at
Dubuque Fairgrounds Speedway on Sunday, April 18.

Burgtorf battles Beuseling before taking
Deery Series opener at 34
WEST BURLINGTON, Iowa (April 10) – Mark
Burgtorf has made a habit of winning Deery Brothers Summer Series features at
34 Raceway. His Saturday victory was another one for the IMCA Late Model tour
record book.
Burgtorf finally got the edge over Nate
Beuseling following a lengthy side-by-side battle, to take opening night
honors for the 24th annual series. The three-time tour champion
earned $3,000 for the West Burlington victory, his circuit career 23rd
and seventh at 34.
He’s now the only driver in series
history to have won seven times at two different tracks, owning the same
number of trophies from his hometown Quincy Raceway.
Beuseling’s runner-up finish was the best
of his brief Deery career. He’d run sixth last summer at Knoxville. Rob Toland
passed the most cars in his heat and “B” feature to get the hard charger
provisional, then passed 19 more cars to finish third.
Tom Goble and Matt Strassheim rounded out
the top five.
Ryan Giles took the initial green from
outside the front row and led the first three laps before the fourth starting
Beuseling drove by.
Burgtorf made his way from the ninth
starting spot and chased Beuseling into lapped traffic. He was on the leader’s
back bumper when the only caution of the 50-lapper came out right at midway,
then took the lead briefly on the 32nd circuit.
Beuseling was back in front when the next
lap was scored. The front pair went back and forth, Burgtorf on the inside and
faster in the first set of turns, Beuseling higher up and faster coming out of
the second set. Burgtorf was finally able to make what proved to be the
winning pass on lap 40, crossing the stripe two car lengths in front of
Beuseling.
Defending champion Jeff Aikey made the
main event by winning his “B” and finished 18th. 2009 runner-up
Jason Frankel had won both Deery races at West Burlington last year but had to
take a provisional to get in the starting grid, ending in 12th.
Sixty-four Late Models were entered at
34. The second annual Slocum 50 was held in memory of local track champion and
Deery regular Brenton Slocum and a portion of the proceeds from ticket sales
went to the scholarship fund in his name benefiting area high school students.
Todd Malmstrom took home the $250 Sunoco
bonus.
Night two of the season opening
doubleheader on Sunday, April 11 sees the Deery Series at Quincy Raceway. Pit
gates open at 3 p.m., the grandstand opens at 4 p.m. Hot laps follow the 4:45
p.m. drivers’ meeting and racing starts at 5:30 p.m.
