Faust out runs big dogs in Highland season finale

The 2010 racing season at the Highland Speedway came to a close this past Saturday night with Mark Faust, a former UMP and Highland Champion winning his 7th feature of the year in the UMP Super Late Models. Faust led from the start of the 25 lap main event starting on the out side front row. Mike Schulte in the 27s held the pole position. The field was put into single file restart after a caution on lap 3. The 51 of Faust was the leader, followed by Schulte, the 1S of Rick “Salty Dog” Salter and the 28 of John Beck.

The biggest mover was the 78 of “The Highland Bulldog” Chad Zobrist, who was making his move through the field.

Faust was in control for the next 11 laps moving from high to low as Salter would stick the nose of the 1s up along side of the race leader. The caution flag waved again on lap 14 for the slowing racer of Justin Ketrow, this came as the leaders were running into lap traffic. On the restart Faust was still in the lead with “The Salty Dog” Salter, hot on his trail, followed by the 28 of Beck. By this time “The Highland Bulldog” Chad Zobrist was sitting in the fourth spot and the poll sitter Schulte in fifth.

At lap 16 the caution again waved this time for the 8G of Bob Geaschel. On the start of the 17th lap Zobrist moved around Beck and pulled along side of Salter. At lap 23 it was a three wide Dog fight towards the checkers as Faust used every trick in the book to hold off the pair of Racing Dogs hot on his heels, as the trio came out of turn four it was a three wide dash to the end. The #51 of Faust carried enough momentum to finish first, the “Salty Dog” Rick Salter and “The Highland Bulldog” Chad Zobrist, who started from the 9th starting position, finished a very close second and third respectively. Beck was fourth and the 21 of Kerry Gaultney was fifth.

In the Steve Schmitt Modifieds Steve Lach saved the best for last by wining his first ever race behind the wheel of a Modified. Starting form the outside front row Lach lead all of the 20 laps. Brian Bielong finished second, Tyler Diebert third, Brent Thompson fourth and Patrick Lawson rounded out the top five.

The UMP Pro (Crate) Late Models made their one and only appearance at the Highland Speedway and past Highland Champion Mark Oller found the familiar settings of the Speedway much to his liking by dominating the class and taking the win. Tait Davenport of Paducah, KY finished second, “The Italian Stallion” Bobby Martintoni crossed the stripe in third, John Prior fourth and Mark Voigt completed the top five.

Long time Highland Driver Steve Stevenson won the “Run What You Brung’ Sportsmen class and Vince Shehorn from Mt. Vernon won the UMP Factory Stocks.

This closes out the 2010 racing season at the Highland Speedway, Promoter Scott Kuhn would like to thank all the racers, Sponsors and mostly all the fans for making the 2010 season a success and looks forward to the 50th anniversary of the Speedway in 2011

Champions Crowned at Highland

(Sept 4, 2010) Highland IL - The 2010 Point season came to a close this past Saturday night at the Highland Speedway. Champions were crowned in all five divisions.
All five champions were locked in before the night’s races began but that didn’t stop the action on the track from being fast and furious.
The UMP Super Late Models were paced to the green flag by former Highland Champion Mark Faust. The number 51 sponsored by his family business Faust Automotive in Aviston IL took to the lead immediately. At lap 10 Faust held point over the “Trenton Tornado”, Michael Kloos, “Fast” Frankie Martin, Chad Zobrist and the 85 of Justin Ketrow.
The caution flag waved at lap 12 for debris and the restart remained the same, except the lapped car of Long time Highland driver Bob Geaschel, was placed between Faust and Kloos. Kloos cleared Geaschel immediately and tried every line on the track to catch the 51. By lap 20 Faust had nearly a straight away lead. He crossed the double checkers first for his fifth win in 2010. Kloos was second, Martin third, the 2010 Highland Late Models Points Champion Chad Zobrist was fourth and Shannon Kuhn rounded out the top five.

Out on the raceway next was the Steve Schmitt UMP Modifieds. Tyler Diebert driving the number 84 sat on the pole and managed to hang onto the lead through several caution periods. But by lap 8 the 24-1D of Dean Hoffmann slipped by the 84 car and took over the lead... Hoffman worked his way through lap traffic and several caution flags. At lap 18 the final caution of the event waved setting up a green white checker. With Diebert hot on his trail, again Hoffman was just too much and held on for the win. Diebert making a great run was second. Following Diebert was the 44 of Jim Werner, Jr, the, 25 of Brett Korves And the 68 Andy Oswald.
With Mike Harrison having a lock on the 2010 Steve Schmitt Modified Championship at Highland, he took the night off.

The Sportsmen, Street Stocks, and Factory Stock were dominated in 2010 by three racers; all took home the Trophies for the night in their classes along with the 2010 Championships. Russell Eilers in the Sportsman, Brad VenHaus in the Street Stocks and Jordon Suhre in the Factory are your 2010 Highland Class Champions in each of their respective classes.

Martin, Harrison, Eilers, Koch, Suhre and the Kids all winners at Highland

(August 28, 2010) HIGHLAND IL - Highland Speedway known for its family tradition continued one of them this past Saturday night. While the racing was the featured attraction, the kids took center stage. More than 100 young fans took part in another big JR Fan Club giveaway in which everyone in attendance received a prize and everyone had a chance to participate in a nickel race on the front straight away. Besides picking up nickels, specialty marked coins were in the mix. Those coins were good for a new bicycle. Once intermission was over, the racing resumed on the Speedway.

The UMP Late Models were the first to take the evenings events green flag. Fast” Frankie Martin from DuQuoin IL lived up to his nickname as he started from the pole and led all 25 laps of the UMP Super Late Model event. “The Salty Dog” Rick Salter form Albers Il, started second row out side and maneuvered around the cars of Brian Wolfmeier and Paul Bailey to claim the runner up spot. Wolfmeier and Bailey finished third and fourth respectively and Highland’s points leader “The Highland Bulldog” Chad Zobrist, finished fifth coming form an eighth place starting position.

Mike Harrison made it three wins in three days as the driver of the 24H began the weekend with a win on Thursday night at a special event held in Mt.Vernon IL and a weekly show win on Friday at Brownstown IL. The win Saturday at Highland in the UMP Steve Schmitt Modifieds wasn’t a runaway has Brian Bielong in the #73 started from the outside fourth row (eighth) and made his presence known. The first part of the twenty lap feature went caution free. Harrison was well into the lead and was moving around lap traffic. A caution bunched the field and gave Bielong a chance to see the leader as he was now in the fourth position. While the first caution was good for the 73 of Bielong the next caution slowed his momentum. A caution with four laps to go had Harrison on point followed by Bielong, and Marty Smith JR right behind. Harrison proved to be a bit too strong as he held onto the lead and captured his 10th feature win at Highland this season. Bielong was second followed by Smith Jr, Chris Smith, and Brett “The Kid” Korvis”, third, fourth and fifth respectively.

Russell Eilers found his way back into victory lane at Highland Saturday night with a win in the Sportsmen division. The finishing order was changed as a post race inspection found several cars illegal. The official finishing order was Russell Eilers, Allan Geiseking, Aaron Melton, Rob Lee and Rick Johnson.

Tim Koch became a first time winner in the UMP Street Stock class. With a crash fest going on behind him, the driver of the 52 stayed up front and held on for the win. Shaun Hortsmann, Brad Venhaus, Jeff Buss and Michael Ripperda, Jr completed the top five.

Justin Suhre débuted a new car and promptly drove it into victory lane in the UMP Factory Stocks he was followed by Jordan Suhre, Willy Myers, Bobby Funderburk, and Casey Burns.

The make up feature from the previous week in the Factory stock saw Willy Myers take home his first trophy in his racing career. He was followed to the finish line by Trevor Isaak, Jordan Suhre, Bobby Funderburk and Brent Weaver.

In a special exabition race put on by the Gateway Vintage Race cars, Butch Graham in a 57 Chevy finished ahead of a full field of nostalgic racers.

Highland Notes: Saturday September 4th is Championship night for all classes at the Speedway.

Northern All Stars Invade Highland

(August 21, 2010) Highland IL - The Northern Allstars Late Models racing series stopped at the Highland Speedway this past Saturday night. The series features many of the top drivers from across the Midwest and this series allows the local drivers a chance to take on the touring competition.

The heat races were lined up by group qualifying. The winner of heat one was the 6K of Michael Kloos. Kloos also had fast time for the group. Highland’s Points leader, Chad Zobrist’s string of bad luck continued this week with a crash on the opening lap of the heat race and that earned the Highland Bulldog a free pass to the consolation race to attempt to make his way into the night’s feature event.
In the other heats, the winner of heat two was Rodney Melvin, “Fast” Frankie Martin was the low qualifier, and heat three was won by Ryan Unzicker, who was also the fastest qualifier in his respective group.

Highland notables who had to attempt to make their way into the thirty lap feature by way of the consolation race were Mark Faust, Aaron Kleine, Dan Jacober and the aforementioned Zobrist.
Taking only the top three finishers, the battle was for the second and third positions as Faust took the point and held on for the win. Kleine and Springfield’s Dick Taylor made the cut. Zobrist got the tracks provisional for being the Highland Speedways current point’s leader, and Brandon Sheppard received the NALMS provision. The twenty car field was now set.

The feature line up had Melvin on the pole with Unzicker along side. Row two was made of up of two Highland regulars, Michael Kloos and Paul Bailey in the #81. Row three saw a pair of #25 cars, Highland favorite Frankie Martin on the inside and crowd favorite The High Side Hustler, Jason Feger sitting on the outside.

At the drop of the green flag the first two rows stayed paired up. Caution at lap 8 put the field into a single file restart with Melvin sitting at the top, followed by Unzicker, Feger and Kloos.Lap thirteen the leaders were catching the back of the field and at lap 17 the caution flag again waved as the car of Aaron Kleine broke and stopped at the top of turn three. Two laps onto the restart Feger was putting pressure on the 24 of Unzicker. Using every inch of the speedway Feger brushed the wall on lap twenty five and had to regroup to take one more shot at the leaders. Racing past the “two to go flag”, Unzicker was trying to overtake Melvin, Feger had caught back up to the front pair, and Kloos was hanging onto the bottom setting up his own run at the front. As the four took the white flag, Feger knew this would be his last chance at the leaders coming from the High Side in turn four he made his charge at Unzicker who was taking his shot at Melvin. Running alongside side the front stretch wall, Feger was pinched up and climbed the wall, he passed the flag stand with two wheels riding the wall and just past the stripe the number twenty five went over on its roof. The balance of the field took abrasive maneuvers as not to collect themselves into the crashed racer of Feger. Safety crews were on the scene immediately and a smiling Jason Feger emerged from the up side down High Side Hustler to a roaring ovation from the Highland crowd. Rodney Melvin collected his second big payday in a row at Highland, as he won the Racing for the Cause benefit just a few weeks earlier. Unzicker was scored second, Feger in dramatic fashion was third, Kloos was fourth and Martin fifth.

After the wild finish in the Late Model event the Steve Schmitt UMP Modifieds took to the Speedway. Eric Faust in the 75 was on the pole with Brian Bielong in the 73 sitting out side. Row two sat the 155 of Chris Smith and the 3R of Jeremy Thoele, and the third row found Steve Lach driving his number 42 and Dean Hoffman in the 24-1D. Missing from the front were Highland regulars Mike Harrison in the 24H starting 10th, and Chad Sellers driving his E-55 machine, starting 12th, both due to there heat finishes.

The first half of the race was filed with cautions and it looked like it might have to be called for time. As the race progressed the drivers settled in and things started shaking. Harrison was making a march to the front. Caution came out at lap 14 and the line up had Bielong on point, with Smith next. Harrison was threading the needle and entered the top five was now sitting in the third spot, Lach and Faust rounded out the top five. Caution again waved this time at lap 18 by now Harrison had passed the 155 of Smith and had his sights on the 73 of Bielong. Two laps were not enough for the 24H to catch a strong Bielong. With the win Bielong broke the string of victories that Harrison was accumulating. Smith came I third, Lach fourth and Faust fifth.

An Eilers found his way into victory lane at the Speedway on Saturday night this time it was Ryan Eilers driving the 3E in the Sportsmen division, Rob Lee was second, Allan Geiseking, Russell Eilers, and Dennis Wernle placed third through fifth respectively.

A late pass by the 55V of Brad Venhaus led to him taking home the trophy in the Street Stock division.

The Factory stock Feature was postponed till next week due to the tracks curfew.

Highland Notes: Saturday, August 28th, will be the 4th annual Big Give Away for the Jr Fan Club. The first 100 kids to sign in for Jr Fan Club on the 28th will get a free drivers suit costume compliments of Tribout Bingo & Carnival Supply. There will also be a nickel race at intermission.

(August 7, 2010) Highland IL-The crowd at the Highland Speedway was treated to a night full of racing. Besides a full schedule of regular evening events, three classes, the Steve Schmitt Modifieds, UMP Street Stocks, and the UMP Factory Stocks all ran double features completing the race of July 24th when a late evening thunderstorm halted action.

The Super Late Models portion of the night started with their heat races. Heat wins went to the 6k of Michaela Kloos, the 11 of 14 year old Tyler Reddick, making a rare Saturday night appearance at the Speedway, and the third heat went to the 25 of “Fast” Frankie Martin.

Kloos started on the pole with Mark Faust in the 51 along side. The talk of the grandstand was the performance of young Reddick; he took the second row pole position in the feature start.

At the drop of the green flag Kloos lived up to his nickname as the “Trenton Tornado” and vaulted into the lead. Faust, Martin, Reddick, and Chad Zobrist were all fighting for position behind the 6K.

Caution waved at lap 7 just as Kloos was catching up to the back of the field. The Gerstner and Sons number 6k was running on a rail.

Each time the leaders caught up with the back of the field a caution would wave and the drivers would line up for a single file restart.

On the restart on lap 19 after a caution for debris, Faust encountered something on the track that caused the 51 to get loose, this resulted him tangling with the 78 of Zobrist who two wheeled it for a brief moment. The result of the incident retired both of the Highland regulars for the night.

Just one lap into the restart the 11 of Reddick pulled off the track, and the first five cars were Kloos, Martin, the 18 of Bobby Dauderman, the 5 of Dan Jacober and the 31 of the Silver Fox, Brent Helmkamp.

Kloos was impressive and in complete control of the evening as no one had anything for the 6K on taking another feature win at Highland. A last lap pass by Dauderman pushed him to second, Martin, third, Jacober held on for fourth and Aaron Kleine Moved into the 5th finishing position.

The make up feature for the Steve Schmitt Modifieds picked thing up were the rains halted the activities  on July 24th on lap 6 with the 24H of Mike Harrison in the lead. He picked up win number 301 by holding of the 73 of Brian Belong, the241D of Dean Hoffman and the 44 of Jim Werner JR.

In the night cap feature it looked like it would be all Brian Bielong as the 73 of Bielong took the lead with Harrison in the 24 H close behind for the first 18 of the 20 laps.

On lap 18 the duo had caught up to the rear of the field. A lap car moved over to let the leaders by but the move proved costly for Bielong as the back marker moved into his lane and allowed Harrison to drive by. Bielong ran out of laps trying to regain the lead and Mike Harrison won his 9th feature at Highland this season. Bielong finished second, Hoffman, third, the 42 of Steve Latch fourth and E55 of Chad Sellers rounded out the top 5.

The Eilers brothers Russell and Ryan have accounted for a lot of victories at the Highland Speedway in the Extreme Sportsmen division, and another brother has added his name to the 2010 win list. Robbie Eilers driving the number 1 of Steve Stevenson sat on the pole and led all 15 laps of the feature. The 19 of Jimmy Cummins kept pressure on the 1 but also he also had to deal with the other two Eilers brothers, Russell and Ryan who were constantly in the mix. Robbie Eilers picked up his first win of the year, Cummins held his ground and finished second, Russell in the 8E was third, Ryan in the 3 was fourth and Rob Lee in the 88 crossed the stripe in fifth.

Michael Ripperda Jr collected wins in both features in the Street Stock Division and Jordan Suhre won both Factory Stock Features as well.

It was Pink All Out At Highland: Melvin, Harrison, Cummins, Horstmann, and SUHRE Claim Top Honors in benefit race

(August 3, 2010) Highland IL - If you were in attendance this past Tuesday night at the Highland Speedway when you walked into the grandstand you knew something special was going on. How many times do you go to a race tack and the walls are painted pink? In fact, pink was the color of the night, from the many balloons tied to railings, to the many volunteers, fans, and all the Highland officials, wearing the color to commemorate the occasion, Racin For A Cause. A race inspired by the members of the Highland racing families whose lives were touched by this dreaded disease. The proceeds from the night’s activities benefited the St. Louis Chapter of the Susan G. Koman Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Besides being a night of remembrance for all who have been affected by the disease, the highlight of the evening was a night of fast paced racing.

The UMP Late Models started the evening with qualifying, Michael Kloos driving the Gerstner and Sons 6K lead qualifying in group one, “Fast” Frankie Martin from DuQuoin IL was fastest in group two and Pocahontas IL’s Paul Bailey led the third group.

The heat races were won by, Kloos, Martin, and the B-12 of Kevin Weaver from Gibson City IL. The consolation race went to Bobby Dauderman.

The Highland crew reworked the track during the intermission ceremonies and a quick warm up before the drop of the green flag gave an indication of what we were in store for. You knew that it would be an exciting feature,

The first three rows of the start had Kloos on the pole, outside of him was Weaver. The next row was Martin and Multi time UMP Champion Rodney Melvin. Row three included Ryan Unzicker and former UMP Champion Mark Faust.

Missing from the front three rows were such notables as NASCARS Kenny Schrader (7th), and 2009 UMP National Champion and 2010 Summer Nationals Points Champion Jason Feger (14th).

Kloos took the lead at the drop of the green and jumped to a three car lead until a caution came out on lap four for a mishap in turn two involving Weaver and Faust. The result of the incident sent Weaver off on the “hook” and Faust to the rear of the field. The line up for the restart was Kloos, Melvin, the 24 of Unzicker and the 9 of Schrader.

Kloos again was the leader with Melvin staying within shouting distance of the 6K. While Kloos and Melvin controlled the front the 25F of Feger had moved from his 14th start position up to 8th.

Lap 13 the yellow flag came out this time for a spin involving the 77M of Jason McBride and 2009 UMP Pro Late Model Champion Bobby Dauderman. The restart still had Kloos on point followed by Melvin, Unzicker, Martin and current Highland Points leader Chad Zobrist making his first appearance in the top five.

By the time lap 17 rolled by Feger had moved into the top five. While most of the field stayed to the middle and bottom of the speedway Feger was living up to his moniker as the “High Side Hustler” several times scraping the “pink” off the walls. Lap 20 Feger was 4th, lap 22-3rd and setting his sites on revenging his loss the previous Tuesday when Kloos won by a fender during the Madison County Fair race.

As each lap passed Feger kept making a charge at the leaders, and for thirty eight laps as the leader Kloos had things starting to happen behind him. Feger put his nose up along side the 27 of Melvin and that was Melvin’s clue to go, it was now or never. On the two to go flag, Melvin jumped out to the high side right in front of Feger breaking his momentum, and passing the 6k of Kloos. The 25 of Feger could no more than settle for a second place finish behind the Logan IL driver. Kloos came up a bit short at the very end as he and Feger were side by side crossing the stripe and finished third. Forth place went Ryan Unzicker and Chad Zobrist followed in fifth. The special hard charger award went to Feger for his move to second from his 14th starting position.

This was an emotional evening as nearly every one in attendance could relate to losing someone close to them because of this disease. Emotions were also ridding high in the UMP Steve Schmitt Modifieds as history could be just around the corner.

Mike Harrison, along with the cars of Russell Eilers and Chad Zobrist participated in a TV segment held earlier in the week in downtown St. Louis promoting the Race For The Ta Tas event. Promoter Scott Kuhn and one of the race organizers Jackie Eilers were interviewed for a segment aired on KSDK-TV‘s morning program..

The number 24 was wrapped in a special design commemorating the event. With the special wrapping on his car, Harrison collected career wins number 298 and 299 racing “on the road” and promoting this event.

The UMP Steve Schmitt Modifieds had Harrison starting in the sixth spot in the feature. The 42 of Steve Lach started on the pole with 00 of Steve Ellison outside. By lap seven Harrison moved into the lead. A caution at lap 18 bunched the field. Harrison on the point with the 155 of Chris Smith in second, Lach was next followed by Tyler Diebert in the 84, and rounding out the top five was the E55 of Chad Sellers. While Harrison held the lead Smith laid in waiting for the driver of the 24 to make a mistake, but this was Mike Harrisons race to win. With a one lap shoot out Harrison sped to his 300th career victory, Smith was second, the E55 of Sellers made a valiant effort coming from the 7th starting position to finish 3rd, Lach and Diebert finished fourth and fifth respectively. During the intermission ceremonies Mike Harrison auctioned off the sides of his race car with the commemorative race For The Ta Tas wrap, the monies collected were donated to the benefit.

Jimmy Cummins started outside of the front row in the Extreme Sportsmen feature. Current Highland points leader Russell Eilers was on the pole. Cummins in the number 19 jumped out to the lead. Eilers tried every move in the book and every spot on the racetrack to pass Cummins. At one point the number 19 had all three Eilers brothers in tow as Robbie was driving the number 1car. A late race caution set up a shootout to the finish. Cummins, Eilers, the 3E of Ryan Eilers, Allan Geiseking in the MPR number 6, and Rick Johnson in the 92 rounding out the top 5. Cummins wasn’t to be denied as he held on for his fourth win at Highland in 2010. Russell Eilers had to settle for second, Ryan Eilers, Geiseking, and Johnson finished third thru fifth respectively.

Shaun Horstmann claimed the Street Stock victory and Jordan Suhre was the class of the field in the Factory Stocks.

Kloos, Harrison, Bielong, and Funderburk Capture Madison County Fair Wins

(July 27, 2010) Highland IL - Fair week is a busy week for the race track at Highland, getting the track ready to take on the horsepower produced by the competitors from the Late Models to the Factory Stocks is a big challenge on any given weekend, but working around all the activities that take place Fair Week, plus, throw in a midday downpour and the challenge becomes almost impossible. The track crew at the Highland Speedway arose to the occasion and groomed the track to handle all the horsepower any competitor had to offer and then some. It was the Madison County Fair UMP Race of Champions presented by Budweiser, and the Scott Wernle Memorial  for the Extreme Sportsmen

The Late Models qualified in groups and than raced their heat races in their respective groups. Group one low qualifier, Brian Shirley in the 48, picked up the win in the first heat; Highland’s point leader Chad Zobrist placed second and with a very impressive run, the 22 of Dan Jacober was third.

Low qualifier in the second group was Rodney Melvin from Logan IL, but the 6K of the “Trenton Tornado” Michael Kloos took the point going into the first turn and held off Melvin and the 5S of Brandon Sheppard for the heat win.

UMP Summer Nationals Champion Jason Feger lead group three qualifying with former UMP National Champion Mark Faust qualifying second. While Feger lead from the start it was the battle for Faust as he had to get back to the front after getting shuffled back to the middle of the pack. Kevin Cole followed Feger across the stripe and Faust came back and salvaged a third place finish.

The Consi win went to the “Milk Man” Clay Bauman, second place was Mark Voigt, Dave Thornton, third, Justin Ketrow fourth and the 27S of Mike Schulte rounded out the top five.

From the drop of the green flag of the forty lap feature the race was dominated by Brian Shirley, with Feger, Kloos, Melvin and Zobrist all in tow behind the leader, at lap 13 the leaders caught up with the back of the field and lap traffic started to come into play.

The first caution came out at lap 16, letting the field catch up to Shirley. The field lined up single file, the leader Shirley, “The High Side Hustler” Jason Feger next, a lapped car in between Feger and Kloos, Rodney Melvin was next and Zobrist completed the top five.

At lap 24 Kloos made his way around Feger looking to head to the front when a caution on lap 25 for the 27S of Mike Schulte slowed the field. In a surprise to all after running in the top five for the race up till this point, the 27M of Rodney Melvin pulled off the track. The restart had Shirley still leading the field, Kloos running second, Feger, third, Zobrist, fourth and Mark Faust making his way into the top five.

Lap 33 the next caution was for the leader Shirley after leading the entire race something let go on the 48 and he retired to the infield. Kloos assumed the point on the restart with Feger, Zobrist. Faust and Dan Jacober in the 22 moving into the top five for the first time in the night.

At this point the race was anyone to win with Kloos taking to the bottom and the “High Side Hustler” living up to his nickname, and letting it hang out on the high side of the track. The two battled side by side and on the white flag lap Feger made a last ditch effort at Kloos coming to the double checkers Kloos hung on and won by a nose, Feger second. Zobrist, Faust, and Jacober made up the top five. It was one of Michael Kloos’s biggest and most impressive wins in his career.

Mike Harrison moved into a different zip code on his way to winning the Steve Schmitt UMP Modifieds at the Madison County UMP Race of Champions. His full straight away lead was impressive. With Harrison having the race in hand, the battle was for second as Brian Bielong, Dean Hoffman, and Chad Sellers waged war for second. When the dust settled Bielong came for a sixth pace starting spot to claim second, Dean Hoffman third, Heat winner Chad Sellers was next and Steve Lach completed the top five.

Emotions were running high for the Extreme Sportsmen class. The race was deemed the Scott Wernle Memorial for a man that was a father, brother, farmer, and a friend to many of the competitors in the Sportsmen class. Scott lost his life in a farming accident this past year and it was only fitting that this race in his honor was held during the Madison County Fair race.

The heat races set the stage for an exciting race of the areas finest drivers. Heat wins went to Gary Hanes, Dennis Wernle, (a great win at his brother’s memorial race), and Rick Johnson capturing the third heat win.

Brian Bielong doing double duty was in the Melton Family 441 and started on the pole. The battle up front had Bielong up against Robbie Eilers in the 1S, and Dennis Wernle keeping pressure on the front two in third. Bielong was in control for the majority of the race leading from the drop of the green flag. At the 18 lap mark a caution flag came out putting the field nose to tail for a green white checker. Robbie Eilers gave it one great shot on the last turn running towards the double checkers but Bielong closed the door and came home first, Eilers who had a similar situation several weeks back when he drove the 6 came home second, Dennis Wernle was third, Rob Lee in the Wonder Acres 88 was fourth and Gary Haynes filled out the top five.

In a grand gesture Brian Bielong gave the children of Scott Wernle the winning trophy.

With all the emotions from the Sportsmen class still present the Factory Stocks set off to do battle. Bobby Funderburk in the 97 lead the majority  of the race and was battling Jordan Suhre in the 26, heading into turn two on the white flag lap Suhre got the 97 of Funderburk sideways, backing off and letting the young driver from Sandoval Il regroup, Suhre made one last charge but couldn’t beat  Funderburk to the stripe. Suhre finished second, the 17R of Jacob Rexing was third, the 9X Trevor Isaak came home fourth and the X of Dale Bohnenstiehl was the top five finishers. In victory lane a very emotional Bobby Funderburk dedicated his win to his late father.

Highland Notes: There will be no racing this Saturday July 31. The next night of racing will be August 3 for Racing for a Cure, with $3000 dollars going to the winner of the Late Model Class. Modifieds, Sportsmen, Street Stocks and the Factory Stocks are also on the bill. For more information visit Facebook.com/2010 Racing for a Cause

August 7th regular racing resumes at the Speedway with the make up features from July 24 starting off the night. It will also be Top Less Night as the Late Models, Modifieds, and Sportsmen will be taking off their roofs for some exciting open air racing.

Mother Nature Captures 3 of 5 Features at Highland

(July 24, 2010) Highland IL – The forces of Mother Nature captured three of the five feature events this past Saturday night at the Highland Speedway. The Steve Schmitt UMP Modifieds, The UMP Street Stocks, and Factory Stocks all lost out due to a Midwestern Summer Thunderstorm that washed out their features. All three features will be completed when regular Saturday night racing resumes at The Speedway on August 7th.

The first of two features to beat the weather was the UMP Late Models and it was a green to checker event. Pole sitter Michael “The Trenton Tornado” Kloos jumped out to an early lead with The Speedway’s current point’s leader Chad “The Highland Bulldog” Zobrist in hot pursuit. By lap 8 the two were running into lap traffic and this gave Zobrist, driving his familiar blue and white number 78 to slip past the 6K of Kloos and take the point, leading the duo through the lap traffic.

Kloos was hanging onto the spoiler of the 78 as the two went high and low around the back half of the field. Kloos could get no closer than the rear bumper of Zobrist. When the double checkers flew Zobrist crossed the stripe first and the 6K machine of Kloos finished in second. “The Gear Jammer” from Summerfield IL, Mike Schulte was third, “Fast” Frankie Martin from DuQuoin IL came from the eight spot to finish fourth and “The Hammer Man” Mike Hammerle of St. Charles MO rounded out the top five. The win was the 6th for point’s leader Zobrist this year, opening his points lead over Mark Faust who took the evening off.

The UMP Sportsmen’s feature featured numerous yellow flags as the competition is getting aggressive toward wining the $1250 Sportsmen Challenge that has been posted by various sponsors of the track. Current point’s leader Russell Eilers started from the pole and stayed ahead of all the cautions that went on behind him. When the dust settled Russell Eilers won his 8th feature of the 2010 season, his younger brother Ryan finished second, long time Highland Sportsmen driver Rick Johnson hung in and finished third. Jim Lafferty, Jr was fourth and Allan Geiseking was back behind the wheel of MPR’s number 6 and finished 5th.

There will be no regular racing at the Highland Speedway on Saturday night July 31st

The next night of regular racing will be August 7th; a race that is always a fan favorite, Topless Night, the Late Models, Modifieds, and Sportsman will be competing without their roofs.

On the next two Tuesday nights, The Highland Speedway will host two special races. The first is on July 27th.  It’s the Madison County Fair UMP Challenge of Champions presented by Budweiser and the Scott Wernle Memorial for the Extreme Sportsmen.

The following Tuesday August 3rd it’s the first annual Racing for a Cure.

Information about these and all the racing from the Highland Speedway is available by going to the tracks web site at Highland Speedway.com or by becoming a fan of the Speedway on Facebook at Facebook.com/Highland Speedway.

Highland Speedway, A Night Of Digging For Gold

(July 17, 2010) HIGHLAND IL -It was a night of digging for gold and wheel to wheel racing action at the Highland Speedway. Lee’s Loan and Jewelry sponsored the second annual Lee’s Dig for the Gold as 10 ladies dug through a pile of sand in front of Highland’s Victory Lane at intermission.  While the hunt for gold, gift certificates, and a ride in Highland Speedway’s “two seater” Late Model was at stake, the Highland track crew spent the time grooming the speedway for the night’s feature events. The result was like adding horse power to all the contestants from the Super Late Models down to the Factory Stocks.

At the drop of the green flag of the UMP Super Late Model Feature, Michal Kloos, The Trenton Tornado jumped out to an early lead, a caution at lap two set the lineup to a single file restart. With Kloos, DuQuoin Illinois “Fast” Frankie Martin next, Mark Faust in the 51 third, “The Milk Man” Clay Bauman fourth and Justin Ketrow in the 85 rounding out the restart in fifth.

By lap 8 the leaders caught the back of the field, it gave Martin a chance to get around the 6 K of Kloos and at lap eight Kloos tangled with the lap car of Nathan Lynch sending Lynch into the front straightaway fence, while Kloos received sheet metal damage.

The restart had had Martin on point followed by Faust, Kloos, the 78, of current Highland point’s leader Chad Zobrist, moving into the top five in the fourth position and Ketrow hanging onto the 5th spot.

With two laps under green Kloos had moved around the 51 of Faust but a caution flag referred the lineup back a lap and Kloos restarted behind the driver from Breese IL.

On the restart it was anyone’s guess who would come out on top of this one but Mark Faust made his move and took over the lead spot, Fast Frankie slid to second and the 78 of Zobrist moved around the fading 6K of Kloos. When the double checkers waved, it was the 51 of Mark Faust taking his 4th win of the season and his third win in a row. Martin was second, Zobrist third, Kloos hung on to fourth and Ketrow had a great showing in the 85 rounding out the top 5.

If you were driving a car with the number 24 on it this past Saturday night in the UMP Steve Schmitt Modifieds you had a real good chance of wining the race. It was the 24H of Mike Harrison on the pole with the 24-1D of Dean Hoffmann sitting on the outside front row; the second row had the 24L of Steve Lach from Brownstown IL on the pole and the “Racing Realtor” Chad Sellers sitting out side.

A caution at lap two put the field in single file restart. The 24-1D of Hofmann on point with Harrison, Sellers, Lach and the 73 of Brian Bielong sitting in 5th.

By lap 8 Harrison and Sellers moved around Hoffman with Sellers beginning to make his move to catch the high flying Harrison. A caution at lap 15 for debris on the track slowed what momentum Sellers was building. Harrison showed his strength and led the field to the finish line for the 7th time this season, Sellers stayed in second, Bielong moved to third, and Hoffmann and Lach finished fourth and fifth respectively.

The Sportsmen Challenge has brought new light to the class. Sportsmen racers have a chance to pick up a cool $1250 plus contingency prizes for earning the most points between this past weeks race and the end of the 2010 Season. The added prize increased the intensity of racing from the heat races to the feature.

Dennis Wernle in the 23 sat on the pole and was leading the way until something let go and the driver from New Douglas Il spun into the infield in turn two. This gave the lead to Rob Lee driving the 88 Wonder Acre’s machine. Lee and Robbie Eilers driving the 6 car of MPR racing ran side by side for nearly the remaining 10 laps, Steve Stevenson in the 1, Jon Ripperda from Bartelso in the 196 and Russell Eilers in the 8E made up the top five, all running side by side and keeping pressure on the leaders.

It all came down to the final turn out of four as Robbie Eilers tried to squeeze by on the outside of the 88 of Lee racing towards the double checkers, Eilers could not find the room as Lee shut the door and picked up his first win of the 2010 season, Eilers in the 6 came up short for the win finished second, Stevenson stayed third, Ripperda fourth and the 8E of current points leader Russell Eilers finished fifth.

The Street Stock division was a battle of endurance as cautions dominated the feature event in a race shortened by the time limit, 15 year old Jacob Steinkoenig came away with his first feature win in very young career, Dustin Clary, T J Eilers, Michael Ripperda, Jr, and Brad Venhaus completed the top 5.

Racing more against the clock more than each other the Factory Stock shortened event found Bob Zbinden winning his second feature in a row and pocketing the extra $100.00 Helvetia Sharpshooters bonus.

Faust Starts Mid Season Charge With Second Win In A Row

(July 10 2010) HIGHLAND IL – This past Saturday The Highland Speedway provided today’s generation of fans a chance to see the tradition that the Highland Speedway was built upon; it was 70’s night presented by Agri Pride FS Inc. Racecars provided by The Gateway Vintage Race Cars raced the Speedway allowing the Highland fans, young and old, a taste of yesteryear. This event was coupled with a 70’s dress contest which was won by Highlands first “Streaker”.

The night featured a winner in the UMP Late Models, whose family has had a long tradition of racing at the Speedway. Mark Faust of Breese IL, whose dad, brothers, uncle and cousin have all raced at the Highland Speedway, claimed his second feature win of the 2010 season.

Current point’s leader, the “Highland Bulldog”, Chad Zobrist, fell victim to a bad pill draw to start his heat race and that led him to a 10th starting spot on the grid in feature. All of which made it a very tough night on the driver of the 78. His worst encounter happened on the second restart of the feature when the Bull Dogs Super Late Model received the worst end of a multi car pile up in between turns one and two. With help from the Speedway’s safety crew the blue and white 78 of Zobrist was able to continue on, and continue on he did. By lap fifteen Zobrist managed to make it to the fourth spot. With the 30 of Alhambra IL’s Mark Voigt ahead of him in third and the 27 of the “Summerfield Gear Jammer” Mike Schulte sitting in second.

Faust driving his familiar number 51, jumped out to an early race lead, while several race cautions bunched the field, the 51 was never seriously challenged for the lead. The race ended with Faust wining his second feature of the season, Schulte ran a good second, Voigt was third, Zobrist gave it all he could but  unfortunately ran out of laps finishing fourth, and John Beck from Springfield IL, rounded out the top 5.

The win by Faust cuts ever so slowly into the points lead currently held by last years Champion Zobrist. Things are definitely are getting interesting in the Late Model Points standings.

Things are really starting to heat up in the Steve Schmitt Modifieds, less than one hundred points are currently separating the top four cars. Adding to the mix, that last years Class Champion Jim Werner might have found his mojo, there still is a lot of racing left in the 2010 for him to make the charge to the front and the Championship is anybody’s to claim.

Werner won his first regular race of the 2010 season this past Saturday night and his second of the year, (his first came during the UMP summer Nationals). Starting from the front row the driver of the 44 from Butler IL held off a hard charging Mike Harrison, Steve Ellison in the 00, Brian Bielong, who has quietly snuck into the top five in points, and the E55 of the Racing Realtor, Chad Sellers who sits second in the point’s standings.

Russell Eilers continues his dominance in the Sportsmen category. While the numbers have dwindled the racers that do come to do battle against the 8E are giving an excellent example of how interesting this class is. The battle between the 23 of Dennis Werner, the 1 driven by Robbie Eilers and the 88 driven by Rob Lee allowed the 8E to race to his 7th checker of the season. Russell’s younger brother Ryan finished 5th.

TJ Eilers from Troy IL captured his first win in the Street stock Division and Bob Zbinden also grabbed his first checker of the 2010 season in the Factory Stock Class.

Highland Notes:

Tuesday July 13th  is a test and tune at the Speedway, $15.00 is the charge for a pit pass while admission to the Grandstands is free.

Saturday July 17th is Lee's Loan and Jewelry Diamond Dig, besides all the great racing action one lady will have come away with being a "Gold Digger'. A pile of sand will be placed on the front stretch of the raceway, buried in the middle will be a sizable diamond provided by Lee's Loan and Jewelry of Highland. Ladies, sign up at Lee's Loan on the square in Highland for a chance to dig for a diamond at intermission.
