Congratulations To All The DuQuoin State Fair Winners!!!

Arpin Wins Southern Illinois 100 on DuQuoin Dirt
(DuQUOIN, Ill. - September 6, 2010) - Steve Arpin handed Venturini Motorsports
its first ever ARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX and Menards victory on
dirt with a convincing performance Monday afternoon in the 58th running of the
Southern Illinois 100 at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds.
Arpin, in the No. 55 Mike's Hard Lemonade Chevrolet, took the lead away from Tom
Hessert on lap 62 of the 100-lap, 100-mile race and never relinquished it,
beating Hessert to the checkered flag by a half second to earn his third career
ARCA Series win.
"We had an awesome race car from the get-go," Arpin said in victory lane. "We
were real tight right off the bat. I was nervous. I was honestly more nervous
than I've been in a long time about being able to get to the front. But, Bill (Venturini,
crew chief) and Kevin made an awesome adjustment during the pit stop and (they)
asked me just to trust them. They hit it right on. I think that is the most fun
I can ever remember having in a race car."
The victory for Arpin also held special meaning considering the Fort Frances,
Ontario driver cut his teeth racing in dirt modifieds before moving up into the
stock car ranks.
"This one is just a little bit extra special to me because, like with my dirt
racing background, that's all I really have done before," added Arpin. "To be
able to come back here to the dirt and get an ARCA win is something I've really
wanted, especially at this level."
The victory was also especially rewarding for the Venturini Motorsports
organization.
"It was a great day for Venturini Motorsports," said team manager Billy
Venturini. "We have a long, and pretty honorable history in this series, and it
was great to finally get a win here on the dirt. We've won just about everywhere
else, and had some great dirt drivers. We spent a lot of time with Mark Richards
and Rocket Chassis, and he helped us quite a bit with some knowledge in the dirt
program. When we came here we were going to be the team to beat and our driver
did a great job."
Hessert, who led laps 37 through 61 in the No. 77 Cherry Hill Classic
Cars-Cunningham Motorsports Dodge, kept the pressure on Arpin all the way and
got alongside the eventual winner on three occasions, but had to settle for
second, five lengths away. Although he didn't get the win, the Cherry Hill, N.J.
driver left the track tied in points with Patrick Sheltra with just four events
remaining in 2010.
"We had a really good day," Hessert said. "The Taylor Classic Cars Dodge ran
well. Solid points day as well; I wish we could have come up with the win. Steve
(Arpin) was pretty strong on the short run. If we had a little bit of a longer
green-flag run we might have had a shot, but it was a good day for us."
Unfortunately for Hessert, his wish for long green flag runs didn't come as 11
cautions slowed the pace for 42 laps.
Mikey Kile, also in a Venturini Motorsports-prepared Chevrolet, finished third.
"It was a good points day," Kile said. "I don't know if we had a third place
car, but track position was key. We were running fifth and the guys in front of
us had some misfortunes. We were able to take advantage of it. It was a good day
for Venturini Motorsports, first and third. Congratulations to those guys (55
Team), and we're looking forward to going to Toledo."
Sheltra finished fourth in the Performance Vehicle Works Dodge in front of Ken
Schrader, who steered his own Federated Auto Parts Chevrolet to the final stripe
in fifth.
AJ Fike earned the Menards Pole presented by Ansell and led the first 16 laps
before Kelly Kovski took control on lap 17. Kovski, who serves as Car Chief for
ARCA driver Robb Brent when he's not driving, led 14 laps before relinquishing
the lead to Schrader when Kovski came to pit road for service. Schrader, who had
pitted earlier, led six laps before Hessert took his turn up front.
Will Kimmel finished a career-best sixth in the Messina Wildlife-Menards Ford
with Craig Goess trailing in seventh in the Greenville Toyota of N.C. Toyota.
Goess's finish places him third in championship points, just five points away
from leaders' Hessert and Sheltra.
Chad McCumbee finished eighth in ModSpace-Red Cross Disaster Relief Ford with
Kovski trailing in ninth in the Central Illinois Security-Hoosier Tire Midwest
Chevrolet. Bryan Silas finished 10th in the Rockingham Speedway-PBG Ford.
The next event on the ARCA Racing Series calendar will take the tour home to
Toledo (Ohio) Speedway for the Northwest Ohio Ford Dealers 200 Sunday afternoon,
September 12.

Miles wins DuQuoin UMP Modified Race
By Jay Hardin/Track Enterprises
DuQuoin, IL (September 7, 2010)-Shelby Miles of Bloomington, Indiana
dominated the 17th Bill Oldani Memorial for UMP Modifieds Labor Day on the
DuQuoin State Fair "Magic Mile" leading all 20 laps of the main event. Curt
Rhodes of Taylorville, Illinois finished second with Jesse Snyder of
Palestine, Illinois third, Bobby Regot of St. Peters, Missouri fourth and
Bryan Higgerson of Pinckneyville, Illinois fifth.
Miles, the son of racing promoters Mike and Judy Miles, jumped into the lead
from the outside of the front row and sailed past Tim Burdel for a lead he
would never give up. Behind him the action was wild and wooly as three
cautions and one red flag slowed and eventually stopped the action. Two-time
winner Jeff Parks spun in turn four on the fifth lap but was able to pit and
rejoin the action. On the restart Jeff Masson spun in turn four but was also
able to continue, as was Steve Adams who made light contact with the turn
one wall on lap 11.
Lap 14 saw perhaps the biggest wreck in DuQuoin modified history as seven
cars tangled in turn three with Rick Sims rolling his machine. The action
started when Benton's Shane Cockrum (up to eighth from twenty-fifth) and
Emmett Groves tangled in turn three with both hitting the wall. When the
dust cleared Jeff Masson, Randy Myers, Chris Winters, Adams and Sims were
all involved with Adams the only one able to continue. No one was injured in
the melee.
Miles pulled away on the restart and ended up with a fair margin of victory
at the checker. Thirteen cars were running at the end with twelve on the
lead lap. Caution-free heat races were held on Sunday night in conjunction
with the Ted Horn 100 and were won by Tim Burdel of DuQuoin, Miles and
Rhodes with Miles setting a new modified track record for six laps of
109.218 miles an hour. Four-time winner Brian Shaw of Robinson had his car
break on the last lap of his heat Sunday night and was unable to start
Monday's feature.

ARCA Series Encounters Changing of Guard for
Federated-Southern Illinois 100
Change abounds in the ARCA Menard’s-RE/MAX Stock Car Series and southern
Illinois race fans will get a first hand look at the new faces on Labor Day when
the full bodied stock cars make just their second dirt track stop in the 58th
Federated Car Care-Southern Illinois 100 at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds. A
large crop of rookies dots the ARCA point standings and many will get their
first look at the unique Magic Mile.
Twenty nine year old Craig Goess of Woodbury, New Jersey and twenty nine year
old Justin Marks of Rocklin, California had been waging a battle for the top
slot in the ARCA title chase like none seen before coming into August and now a
nine time ARCA champ and two newcomers have thrust themselves into the
titlefight.. Goess had 1 win and 10 top ten finishes coming into the Springfield
event and is just 5 points in the lead. Marks has one dirt track start at
DuQuoin in the Menard’s-RE/MAX Series prior to 2010, that coming in 2007 in
which he started seventh and finished there completing all 100 circuits. Marks
currently has 1 win and 9 top ten finishes and dropped from first to sixth.
The driver second in the ARCA points is something of a surprise considering he
has no wins (at press time) in 2010 and is counting on his dirt track experience
to propel him to a record tenth ARCA crown. Clarksville, Indiana resident Frank
Kimmel has 10 top ten finishes in 13 starts but no victories. Kimmel as a record
seven wins on the dirt at Springfield and is a five-time winner of the Southern
Illinois 100.
Kimmel had the lead at Springfield insearchof a record eighth win there but
crashed while leading. Kimmel is expected to be just one of two former winners
at DuQuoin, the other being Fenton, Missouri’s Ken Schrader. A popular NASCAR
veteran and two time USAC champion the fifty five year old Schrader shows no
signs of slowing down in 2010. Schrader competed in selected ARCA, NASCAR and
UMP events in 2010 winning the Indyana Classic for UMP Modifieds at the Indiana
State Fairgrounds in May. In 2006 he ended nearly 30 years of frustration
picking up his first ever triumph at DuQuoin in the Southern Illinois 100 and
backed that up with a second victory in 2007.
Joining Goess, Marks and Kimmel in the top ten after Berlin are Tom Hessert of
Cherry Hill, New Jersey, Patrick Sheltra of Indiantown, Florida, Dakoda
Armstrong of New Castle, Indiana, Mikey Kile of West Lake, Louisiana, Tim George
of New York city, Robb Brent of Shelby Township, Michigan and Joey Coulter of
Miami Springs, Florida. Hessert and Sheltra are dirt track veterans, Hessert in
USAC Midget and Silver Crown cars and Sheltra in UMP and World of Outlaw Late
Models. Sheltra won the race at Springfield in awild finish and is just ten
markers out of the lead. He has two top ten finishes in three starts at DuQuoin
including a second to Kimmel in 2008. Hessert got a top five on the dirt at
Springfield and is fourth, twenty five points out of first. Brent and Coulter
picked up their first ARCA wins in 2010 with Brent’s coming for the Allgaier
Motorsports team out of Springfield, Illinois.
Five Illinois drivers made the field at DuQuoin last year and a similar number
are expected on the 2010 entry list. Twenty nine year old A.J. Fike will attempt
to become the first driver since stock cars began competing at DuQuoin in 1950
to win the Ted Horn 100 USAC Silver Crown race and the Southern Illinois 100 on
the same weekend. Springfield’s Kelly Kovski, Arenzeville’sMark Littleton and
Benton’s Rodny Melvin are also possible entrants. Kovski has completed 5 of the
6 DuQuoin events he has started while Littleton has 2 starts. Melvin is a terror
in UMP late models in the area and looks to thrill the local fans with an ARCA
run 20 miles from his home. Decatur’s Kyle Logue has a former Bill Hendren car
at his disposal while forty four year old Joe Cooksey of Centralia could also be
an entrant.
Of the top twenty in the 2010 ARCA RE/MAX-Menard’s point standings seven have
never started a race at DuQuoin while seven others have three starts or less at
the Magic Mile. Add in Littleton, Melvin and Kyle Logue and nearly half if not
more of the 2010 DuQuoin entry list would have little to no experience on a
track where knowledge may be the key to victory. ARCA rookies include Kile and
Armstrong, Nick Igdalsky and Chase Mattioli of Pennsylvania and Jerick Johnson
of Minnesota.
Drivers who have more than one start could be considered ARCA dirt track
veterans and at least one of two would be a dark horse to take home a Southern
Illinois 100 trophy. Canada’s Steve Arpin had a fine debut at DuQuoin in 2009
coming to 9th from 23rd for Bill Venturini. Arpin is a veteran of dirt late
models and modifieds in the upper Midwest. Indiana’s Darrell Basham has racing
experience that dates back to the USAC Stock Car series while Georgia’s Mark
Gibson may return for yet another shot at a mile dirt track win. Tennessee’s Ron
Cox is also expected to come back, Cox has several strong runs on the dirt,
mostly at Springfield.
Youth was served last year at DuQuoin and unfortunately the defending winner
will not return. Nineteen-year-old Parker Kligerman became the youngest race
winner in DuQuoin stock car history in 2010 and he did it in dramatic fashion.
After crashing in qualifications the youngster started dead last in the 34-car
field and by lap 55 took the lead from A.J. Fike and was never headed again,
winning his second dirt track event in just his second dirt track start!
Kligerman also set a record for the worst starting position by a stock car race
winner at DuQuoin since the hard tops took to the Magic Mile in 1950. Kligerman
moved on to the NASCAR Nationwide Series for selected races.
The Federated-Southern Illinois 100 shapes up again to be a battle of youth vs.
experience with Illinois drivers trying to sneak into victory lane as Frank
Kimmel tries to break the tie he has with the late Dean Roper and post a record
sixth Southern Illinois 100 win. Menard’s-Ansell Pole qualifying is slated for
11 a.m. following the 9-10 a.m. practice session. Drivers will shoot for the
track record set in September of 2008 by Ricky Stenhouse of 32.896 (109.436
MPH). The start of the Federated-Southern Illinois 100 is set for 1 p.m.
following the 20-mile Bill Oldani Memorial. The 100-mile ARCA track record of
90.101 (1:06:35.00) was set in September of 1983 by Dean Roper.

Ted Horn 100 Returns to the Magic Mile
One year after getting completely washed out by Mother Nature the Ted Horn 100
USAC K&N Silver Crown Championship Series race returns to light up the night at
the 88th DuQuoin State Fair on Sunday, September 5. A large number of USAC’s top
stars are expected for the 100-mile grind which began in 1949 and has been held
annually except when rained out in 1950, 1962 and 2009.
The USAC Silver Crown Series seems to be experiencing resurgence in interest in
2010, at least on the one-mile dirt ovals. Thirty-six cars appeared for the
Hoosier Hundred in May and a similar number of entries are expected for DuQuoin,
which becomes the second and final 100-mile dirt race on the schedule with the
rainout at Springfield. Those entries should include five former winners of the
Ted Horn 100, four USAC national champions, most of the top ten in the current
point standings and a crop of USAC’s “Young Guns” in search of a 100-mile
triumph on the storied “Magic Mile”.
Jeff Swindell (1990) of Memphis, Tennessee, Russ Gamester (1997) of Peru,
Indiana, Tracy Hines (2005-06), of New Castle, Indiana, Shane Cottle (2007) of
Kokomo, Indiana and Brian Tyler (2008) of Parma, Michigan are the former winners
who should be in attendance at DuQuoin. Swindell is one of four drivers who
actually ran at DuQuoin during the 1980’s and is employed by NASCAR’s Carl
Edwards for selected Silver Crown dirt events. Gamester is a former USAC Midget
car champion who drives for a family owned operation while Hines won the 2000
USAC Silver Crown title. Cottle gained his first 100-mile dirt track win in the
2007 Ted Horn 100 and Tyler may pull double duty again racing in the ARCA
Southern Illinois 100 on Labor Day. Tyler is a former one-lap track record
holder at DuQuoin in the ARCA stock cars.
Three time and defending USAC Silver Crown champion Bud Kaeding of Campbell,
California currently leads the 2010 USAC K&N title chase in an attempt to become
the first four time champion in series history. 2008 Silver Crown champion Jerry
Coons Jr. of Tucson, Arizona won a pole at DuQuoin in 2001 and is second in the
2010 Silver Crown standings. Hines occupies the seventh slot with Tyler eighth
and Gamester nineteenth. Kaeding has a 38 point lead over Coons and can gain a
commanding lead toward a fourth national title with a good finish.
Second year driver Shane Hmiel of Pleasant Garden, North Carolina is sixth in
the Silver Crown points on the strength of his win at the Hoosier Hundred in
May. The son of NASCAR team manager Steve Hmiel has a number of NASCAR races
under his belt and recently announced he would drive selected events in the Indy
Lights Series. “Young Guns” Kody Swanson of Kingsburg, California, Bobby East of
Brownsburg, Indiana and Bryan Clauson all occupy top ten slots in the USAC
Silver Crown chase. East, a former USAC Midget champion is a second-generation
driver whose father is the builder of the fames Beast chassis while Clauson and
Swanson came from the USAC Midget ranks. Most of the top twenty in the USAC
Silver Crown standings are expected at the “Magic Mile”.
Illinois is represented well again at the Ted Horn 100 with two drivers in
contention for a national title. Olney’s Levi Jones is a three time USAC Sprint
car champion and he won the season opening Silver Crown event in February. Jones
is fourth in the Silver Crown standings behind Galesburg’s A.J. Fike who picked
up his first win at Iowa Speedway in May. Like Tyler Fike may pull double duty
if the opportunity presents, he has an ARCA pole at the “Magic Mile” and in 2004
became the first driver in 33 years to race three different racecars at DuQuoin
Labor Day weekend. Other home state drivers include Indy 500 veteran Donnie
Beechler of Springfield, Powri midget shoes Zach Daum of Pocohontas and Mike
Hess of Springfield, Chris Urish of Elkhart and Davey Ray of Loves Park. Benton,
Illinois car owner Ricky Nix also returns to the series employing Brad Kuhn
behind the wheel of his machine at Indianapolis in May.
Murphysboro’s Randy Bateman joins the Illinois contingent as well. Bateman has
14 starts in the Ted Horn 100 and 9 unsuccessful attempts since 1982. Randy
delighted a partisan southern Illinois crowd as he set second quick time in
qualifications in 2008.
USAC veterans in search of a Ted Horn 100 win include Jon Stanbrough of Kokomo,
Indiana in the car in which Hines won with at DuQuoin in 2005 and 2006.
Stanbrough is currently among the hottest sprint car drivers in the country and
recently notched career feature win number 150 at Tn State Speedway in
Haubstadt, Indiana. Fellow Indiana driver Dave Darland won the 1997 Silver Crown
championship and is a former one lap track record holder in championship
machinery at DuQuoin. Darland holds the unwanted distinction of being the active
driver with the most starts in the Ted Horn 100 (15) without a win.
Pennsylvanians Tom Capie and John “Hot Rod” Heydenreich are always strong on the
dirt. Several Ted Horn rookies should be in the field as well including Clauson,
East, Tanner Swanson and Mike Martin. Other “Young Guns” include Justin Carver
of Memphis, Tennessee and Derek Hagar of Marion, Arkansas.
The Ted Horn 100 enters its sixty-second year in memory of the legendary three
time AAA National champion who lost his life in DuQuoin’s second national
championship race in October of 1948. Practice for the mighty uprights is
tentatively slated for 5 p.m. on the “Magic Mile” with qualifications at 6:30
and the flying start for the 100-mile Ted Horn Memorial at around 8:30. The one
lap track record is a world record still held by Tyler Walker Of 29.138
(123.550) set in 2004 and the 100-mile record is still the fastest in the world
on the dirt, 56:03.00 (107.047) set in 1992 by Johnny Parsons.
Don't Miss The Huge Weekend In DuQuoin Featuring ARCA, USAC
& Modifieds!!!!!
---------------------------------
DuQUOIN’S “MAGIC MILE” AGAIN PAYS TRIBUTE SUNDAY
TO 3-TIME NATIONAL CHAMPION TED HORN
Ted Horn, who won three consecutive National Driving Championships in 1946, 1947
and 1948, will again be honored this Sunday night when the USAC Silver Crown
Championship cars compete in the annual “Ted Horn 100” at the DuQuoin State
Fair.
Horn, who perished in a crash at DuQuoin in 1948, was the only driver to capture
three consecutive National Driving Championships until Sebastian Bourdais won
four straight under CART sanction between 2004 and 2007. He was posthumously
declared the 1948 champion after winning the title in 1946 and 1947. . A.J. Foyt
never did it, Mario Andretti never did it, The Unsers never did it and Jimmy
Bryan never did it.
Horn also strung together a record of consistency at the Indianapolis 500 which
had never before been equaled and still hasn’t in the past six decades! Despite
never winning the 500, between 1936 and 1948 he posted nine consecutive finishes
of fourth or better! He was second in 1936, followed by a third, fourth, fourth,
fourth, third, third, third and fourth!
Horn never won in the Championship Cars at DuQuoin but his exploits elsewhere
were legendary. A member of both the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America and the
National Sprint Car Hall of Fame, Ted established track records everywhere and
his record of victory in the potent world of Sprint car racing was truly
amazing.
Championship racing at the DuQuoin mile dates back to the year of Horn’s
accident, 1948. Horn had finished third at DuQuoin just over a month before his
demise. Winners at the Magic Mile since read like a “who’s-who” of the sport and
include Indianapolis 500 champions Lee Wallard, Johnnie Parsons, Sam Hanks,
Jimmy Bryan, Rodger Ward, A.J. Foyt, Mario Andretti and Al Unser.
Rain halted the planned 100-mile race last year long before the green flag would
have been issued. It marked only the second rainout in the 61-year history of
the race!
Fans have waited two years for the “Ted Horn 100” and they won’t be disappointed
with the field assembled for this year’s race. Bud Kaeding, who has yet to win
at DuQuoin, is aiming for a record fourth series title in five years.
Defending winner (2008) Brian Tyler and former race winner Russ Gamester (I1997)
and two-time race winner Tracy Hines (2005-2006) are also expected to compete,
along with some of the top names in American open-wheel racing.
Of particular note will be the ongoing battle between Tony Stewart Racing
teammates Bryan Clauson and Levi Jones for the inaugural USAC “National Drivers
Championship” which continues at DuQuoin Sunday. Clauson leads Jones in the
standings, which are determined by a special formula involving all three of
USAC’s National series, the Silver Crown, Sprint and Midget, to proclaim a true
USAC “National Drivers Champion.”
Drivers will be aiming at Tyler Walker’s one-lap track qualifying mark of 29.138
seconds (123.550 mph) established in 2004.

Oldani Memorial Returns for 17th Running Final Stop of Modified Triple Crown
The 17th running of the Bill Oldani Memorial returns to the DuQuoin State Fair
with preliminary events Sunday night September 5 and the 20-mile main event on
Labor Day. The 2010 edition is the final leg of the new UMP Modified “Triple
Crown” following the first Indyana Classic at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in
May and the first Illini Dash at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in August.
A number of drivers from Illinois and Missouri and surrounding states are
expected for the 17th Oldani Memorial including two time (2005-07) winner Jeff
Parks of nearby Marion, Illinois and defending race winner Brian Shaw of
Robinson, Illinois. Shaw is a four-time winner (2002-04-06-09) of the Oldani
Memorial at DuQuoin. Fenton, Missouri’s Ken Schrader dominated the Indyana
Classic in May leading all 20 miles while the winner at Springfield was not
available at press time.
If Ken Schrader enters the Oldani Memorial on Labor Day weekend and wins the
20-mile event he would become the first man in the sixty-five year existence of
the Magic Mile to win a main event at DuQuoin in three different types of
racecars. He holds a similar distinction at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in
Springfield.
Other drivers expected for the Oldani Memorial include Jesse Snyder of
Palestine, Curt Rhodes of Taylorville, Chris Winters of DuQuoin, Bryan Higgerson
of Pinckneyville, Emmett Groves of Charleston, Missouri and Brian Reick of Troy
Missouri.

stock cars and the most diverse stock car series in the country. NASCAR's
Ken Schrader filed on of the first entries for the Federated-Southern
Illinois 100 and thirty-five other drivers in search of a 100-mile dirt
track win should join him. If the action at Springfield is any indication of
what will take place at DuQuoin fans can expect a wild day of stock car
racing on the 'Magic Mile".
UMP Modified race cars join the fray 1,0th days with heat races on Sunday
night with the Silver Crown machines and the seventeenth running of the
20-mile Bill Oldani Memorial taking place Labor Day right before the
Southern Illinois 100. Several area short track modified aces will be on the
grounds both days, Robinson's Brian Shaw is the defending champion of the
Oldani Memorial.

50TH “TONY BETTENHAUSEN 100” RESET FOR 2011
Track Enterprises, USAC and the Illinois State Fairgrounds regretfully announce
the cancellation of the “Tony Bettenhausen 100” USAC Silver Crown Championship
and UMP Modified race at the one-mile dirt Springfield oval. A reschedule date
was unable to be found to fit all parties involved.
“Unfortunately, mother nature did not cooperate the day of the event and we
exhausted all possible dates to try and reschedule the event,” said Bob Sargent
of Track Enterprises. We now focus our attention on the September 5 “Ted Horn
100” at the DuQuoin (Ill.) State Fairgrounds Magic Mile, the next date for the
USAC Silver Crown and UMP Modified series.”
The cancellation means a one-year postponement of the 50th running of the “Tony
Bettenhausen 100,” which honors the late AAA and USAC National driving champion.
The Springfield race, one of America’s most traditional motorsports events,
dates back to 1934.
Tickets which had been purchased for the Springfield races can be mailed for
refunds to Track Enterprises at P.O. Box 79, Macon, Ill. 62544. Please include
your name, mailing address and telephone number. Ticket refund requests are also
available to print out at www.trackenterprises.com.
Vandermeersch Wins Illinois State Fair Sportsman Nationals for Fifth Time
For more information contact Track Enterprises at 217-764-3200
By Jay Hardin
Springfield, IL August 23, 2010- Springfield fireman Dennis Vandermeersch
has been competing in the Sportsman Nationals virtually since its inception
in 1994 and for a while it looked as if his chances to win a fifth Sportsman
event at the Illinois State Fairgrounds weren't very good. The Ritz Lil
Fryer-B Safe-Midwest Brick Wash Monte Carlo appeared to have engine woes
during the practice period and many in attendance assumed the race would be
decided between former winners Wes O'Dell, Jeff Leka and Timmy Dick. They
were wrong.
Assumption's Phil Moreland Jr. was slated to start from the pole for the
20-mile race but his Chevrolet broke during practice moving Vandermeersch to
the pole position. Vandermeersch and his crew worked diligently before the
Sportsman feature to repair the misfiring number 25 and had the car ready to
go when the field began to line up.
Vandermeersch's Chevrolet, used only once a year, broke from the pole
position at the green flag in front of five-time winner Wes O'Dell of
Springfield, Tim Dick of Monticello and Mike Pickering of Decatur. Jeff Leka
of Buffalo started 14th and began a march to the front. The show from the
back of the pack was spectacular as Steve Adams of Humboldt arrived just
before the start of hot laps and found that his Chevrolet smoked badly
during practice. The white plume continued as Adams passed several cars on
the high side in the opening laps.
The first caution on lap 4 slowed the field as Bob Cowell, Bill Berghaus and
Jim Farley Jr. tangled in turn one with Farley smacking the concrete. Adams
smoking car, which had moved from twenty-fifth to about seventh dropped out
under caution. O'Dell, the only driver to start all 17 Sportsman National
events, tried to gain the lead on the ensuing restart but Vandermeersch was
too strong and he began to pull away. Two other minor cautions slowed the
field but it was not enough to allow O'Dell to pass Vandermeersch. Former
winners Tim Dick and Jeff Leka were running in the top five when Leka and
the 2007 winner tangled in turn one on lap 17 after Ethan Schnapp caught
fire in turn four. Leka hit the concrete very hard, the three-time winner
was not injured but extremely upset.
Vandermeersch led the final three laps without challenge arid won his fifth
Sportman event tying him with Wes O'Dell and became the fourth driver to win
three straight. It also marked just the third time a driver led all the laps
of the Sportsman main event. O'Dell finished second with Tim Dick third,
Rick Roedel fourth and Cody Bauman rounding out the top five as 12 cars
finished the race with all on the lead lap.

Sheltra Steals ARCA Win on Springfield Dirt |
![]() Sheltra, driving a beaten and battered Recycling Services-Ferguson Pipe sponsored Dodge, survived a lap 64 tangle with Justin Marks, and then used an aggressive late race restart to power into the lead with just eight laps remaining. The 24 year old Indiantown, Fla. driver then held off a hard-charging Mikey Kile in an overtime green/white/checker finish to become the 13th different winner in 14 ARCA races this season. |

ARCA Remax Car Series Racing Today at IL State Fair!!!
We are racing today, Sunday Aug 22 at the IL State Fair!!
Seven time Allen Crowe 100 winner Frank Kimmel of Clarksville, Indiana looks for
his first ARCA series win of 2010 as the Automobile Racing Club of America
Menard’s-RE/MAX Stock Car Series comes with a new look to end the Illinois State
Fair’s two-day festival of speed with the 48th AlIen Crowe 100 on Sunday August
22. Kimmel is the current point leader in search of a tenth title and heads a
field of nearly 35 ARCA cars vying for starting positions at one of two dirt
track races on the 2010 ARCA schedule.
Nine time ARCA title winner Kimmel has a ten point lead after the New Jersey
road race and is still looking for his first win of the year. Fans can expect
him to be one of the favorites at Springfield as Kimmel has become the ‘king of
dirt’ in the ARCA series as the all-time leading race winner on dirt in the
modern era. Kimmel is also king at the Illinois State Fairgrounds, his seven
race wins are the most in stock cars and he leads in laps led at Springfield
with 604 as well as money won.
Justin Marks, a twenty-nine year old Californian, had one win and nine top ten
finshes after the race at New Jersey and dropped to fourth in the points. New
Jersey’s Craig Goess has staged a torrid battle with Marks for the point lead
and is second in points with one win and ten top ten finishes.. Mikey Kile of
Louisiana, Indiana’s Dakoda Armstrong, New York’s Tim George, Michigan’s Rob
Brent and Florida’s Joey Coulter are all in the current top ten in points and
could find their way to Springfield. Brent drives for the 2006 Allen Crowe
winning team of Mike Allgaier based in Springfield while Armstrong is a veteran
of USAC midget car competition.
Two in the top ten have to be considered strong contenders for a win on the
Springfield Mile. Florida’s Patrick Sheltra held the point lead for part of the
season and is a veteran of dirt late model competition with several strong runs
at Springfield and DuQuoin. New Jersey’s Tom Hessert has run midgets and USAC
Silver Crown cars before moving to the ARCA series: Hessert is now third in the
2010 title chase with Sheltra fifth.
One of the ARCA regulars who is looking forward to the dirt is Canadian Steve
Arpin, a veteran of dirt modified racing. Other ARCA regulars expected include
Indiana’s Darrell Basham, Florida’s Bryan Silas and Michigan’s Brad Smith. North
Carolina’s Chad McCumbee returns driving for Andy Belmont.
Illinois drivers help boost ticket sales and last year was no exception as six
dotted the entry list and five making the starting field. Galesburg’s A.J. Fike
has done ‘double duty’ the last few years competing in the Saturday Tony
Bettenhausen 100 USAC dirt car race and will try to join Al Unser as the only
other driver in the history of the Illinois State Fair to sweep the dirt car and
stock car races on the same weekend. Fike has two top ten finishes in five
starts in the Crowe 100 and a pole in his rookie year of 2004. Springfield’s
Kelly Kovski has five starts in the Crowe 100 and two top ten finishes while
Mark Littleton of Arenzville has three starts. Southern Illinois dirt late model
veteran Rodney Melvin of Benton looks to make his debut at Springfield.
Unfortunately one driver who will not return is defending winner Parker
Kligerman. The 19 year old Kligerman led 18 laps last year enroute to becoming
the youngest winner in Springfield stock car history and posted a stunning
upset. He has moved on to the NASCAR Nationwide Series.
Frank Kimmel will try to break the tie for most overall stock car wins at
Springfield with the late Dean Roper in Sunday August 22 while others try to
join legends like Butch Hartman, Don White, Jack Bowsher and Ramo Stott as Allen
Crow~ 100 victors. Practice for the 48th Allen Crowe 100 is slated to begin at 9
a.m. Sunday morning with one lap trials for the pole position at 11. The Allen
Crowe 100 gets a flying start at approximately 1 p.m.

Golden Bettenhausen 100 contested at Illinois State Fair on Saturday
The 50th running of the Tony Bettenhausen 100 won't see a back to back
winner in 2010 but several former winners comprise part of the entry list
for the golden edition of the Bettenhausen Memorial and the 76th national
championship dirt track race held on the historic Springfield Mile as the
Illinois State fair enters its second century of auto racing.
Defending race winner Cole Whitt moved to the NASCAR K&N Series, however
three time (1997, 1999, 2003) winners Dave Darland of Lincoln, Indiana and
Brian Tyler of Parma, Michigan (2004, 2005, 2008) continue in their quest
for a 4th Springfield victory while Russ Gamester of Peru, Indiana (1998),
Tracy Hines of New Castle, Indiana (2006) each try to add a second
Bettenhausen win to their resume.
They are joined by three time USAC K&N Silver Crown champ Bud Kaeding of
Campbell, California. Kaeding is attempting to become the first four time
national champion in series history and ironically has
never won a 100-mile race on the dirt. In fact, nineteen of the top twenty
drivers in the 2010 USAC K&N Filters title chase should be on the
Springfield entry list on August 21. 2008 K&N National Champion
Jerry Coons Jr. of Tuscon, Arizona (2nd) is one and he could be joined by
some of USAC's "Young Guns"as well.
Pleasant Garden, North Carolina's Shane Hmiel is in search of the second leg
of the dirt car "Triple Crown". Hmiel is sixth in points and had a strong
performance at Indianapolis in May, winning the Hoosier Hundred. Joining
Hmiel are the Swanson brothers, Kody (5th in points) and Tanner, from
Kingsburg, California. The Swanson brothers had the first 1-2 finish in
Silver Crown history at Berlin with Tanner getting his first win at Kody
taking second.
Noblesville, Indiana resident Bryan Clauson is a series rookie driving for
Tony Stewart. 2008 Tony Bettenhausen 100 polesitter Shane Hollingsworth of
Indianapolis also won the 2009 Hoosier Hundred. Second generation driver
Bobby East of Indiana has experience in two of NASCAR's top three divisions
and has returned for a shot at a Silver Crown title. However, he has just
one start on the dirt miles and that ended upside down at the May Hoosier
Hundred.
USAC veterans Tom Capie of Trevose, Pennsylvania and former one-lap track
record holder Jeff Swindell of Memphis, Tennessee should.be on the entry
list as well as John "Hot Rod" Heydenreich who returns to the series after
an absence.
Forty-four years have passed since Central Illinois' Don Branson (Champaign)
pulled into Springfield's victory lane, winning the 6th Bettenhausen 100 in
1966. 2010 could see another winner from the central part of the state as
A.J. Fike of Galesburg enters the 50th Bettenhausen as a dark horse
favorite, not only for the Tony Bettenhausen 100 but for the national title
as he is currently third in the standings thanks to a win in Iowa. Fellow
Illini Levi Jones (Olney), a pilot for Tony Stewart's race team, won the
pole for the May Hoosier Hundred and is 4th in the points. Fike, who will be
pulling double duty for the weekend racing in Sunday's ARCA event, and Jones
lead a contingent of Illini participants that could number at least 8 by
race day.
Hometown drivers Donnie Beechler and Mike Hess have extensive experience in
the big dirt cars on the Springfield Mile. Beechler is a 4 time starter in
the Indianapolis 500 with 5 USAC Silver Crown wins to
his credit, three on dirt miles. Hess is a two-time Powri National Midget
champion. They are joined by Elkhart's Chris Urish, Pocohontas' Zach Daum,
Davey Ray of Loves Park and Murphysboro's Randy
Bateman as well as Benton car owner Ricky Nix who fields Powri Midget champ
Brad Kuhn at the wheel.
A new format greets the drivers and fans for the 50th Bettenhausen 100
replacing a format change for the 49th running last year. In 2009 the top 6
qua1ifiers were inverted at the start meaning fast qualifier A.J.
Fike had to start sixth. Cole Whitt charged to the lead from the inside
front row and led all 100-miles to become at 18 years and 2 months the
youngest driver to ever win a 100-mile national championship race at
Springfield. This year there will not be an inversion of the qualifiers;but
a 'competition red flag' at the conclusion of the leader's 51st lap. At that
time all cars will be stopped in running order along the main stretch and
the crews allowed to work on the machines. Should a tire be changed on the
car the car will be sent to the tail of the field for the restart. In
addition, the field will restart in DOUBLE FILE order for the second half of
the race. The new format was used for the Hoosier Hundred in May and Shane
Hmeil gave up a commanding lead at the competition stop, changed three tires
and was forced to come from 12th on the restart to retake the lead on lap
77.
Over 30 drivers attempt to join immortals A.J. Foyt, Rodger Ward, Mario
Andretti, Chuck Gurney and Jack Hewitt as winners of the Tony Bettenahusen
100 on August 21. Practice is slated to begin at 9 a.m. with qualifications
at around 10:30 and the 50th running of the Tony Bettenhausen 100 at 1:30.
Tickets are available at the Illinois State Fair Box Office, Ticketmaster
outlets.

First Illini Dash Saturday at Springfield
For the first time in Illinois State Fair history the UMP Modified division
has a race scheduled during the fair as the open wheel machines share the
track with the USAC Silver Crown Series on Saturday August 21. 2010 marks
the first time in two years that four race events will be conducted during
the weekend of speed at the Illinois State Fair.
The modified machines were a staple of the Illinois Fall Nationals held at
the fairgrounds in September and race fans saw exciting competition. No less
is expected for the second leg of the modified 'triple crown' at Springfield
with many cars from throughout Central Illinois expected. NASCAR star Ken
Schrader won the first leg, the 20-mile Indyana Classic held in May at the
Indiana State Fairgrounds in dominating fashion leading the entire way. It
is unknown at press time if Schrader will run the inaugural "Illini Dash" at
Springfield but others expected are Steve Adams of Humboldt, Curt Rhodes of
Taylorville and Jeff Leka of Buffalo. Leka and Rhodes are former winners of
modified events on the Springfield Mile.

Springfield, IL August 16, 2009- The seventeenth running of the Sportsman
Nationals joins the ARCA RE/MAX-Menard's Series on August 22 at the Illinois
State Fair with around 30 of the Central Illinois Sportsman stock cars
slated for a 20-mile tilt on the 'World's Fastest Mile Dirt Track".
Springfield's Dennis Vandermeersch claimed his fourth win last year and is
the only driver to post back to back wins twice and those came ten years
apart! Vandermeersch, plus former winners Wes O'Dell of Springfield, Jeff
Leka of Buffalo, Tim Dick of Monticello and Steve Sheppard Jr. of New Berlin
are among the expected entrants for the seventeenth Sportsman clash. The
Sportsman Nationals 20-mile main event will be held immediately prior to the
48th Allen Crowe 100.

48th Allen Crowe 100 Sunday at Illinois State Fair
Seven time Allen Crowe 100 winner Frank Kimmel of Clarksville, Indiana looks
for his first ARCA series win of 2010 as the Automobile Racing Club of America

>
>
>
>
>
> Bobby East of Indiana has experience in two of NASCAR's top three divisions

>
>

>

Illinois State Fair Enters Second Century of Auto Racing
Springfield IL-August 12, 2010-When the USAC Silver Crown Series and ARCA
RE/MAX Stock Cars come to the Illinois State Fair on August 21 and 22 they
will be continuing a motor sports tradition at the Illinois capitol that
reaches back over 100 years at an annual fair that dates back to 1853!
Not long after the Illinois State Fair entered the twentieth century
automobiles were added to the entertainment lineup and drew huge crowds to
the one-mile dirt oval. Newspaper accounts and official records indicate
that many of these events were nothing more than exhibitions, many including
the famous Barney Oldfield during his barnstorming days across the country.
Oldfield would frequently lap fairground tracks in an attempt to break
records and at times would race airplanes.
In 1909 Lewis Strang, Louis Chevrolet and the Buick Racing Team came to
Springfield, Illinois for an Illinois State Fair held in July. The media
reports and record keeping of the time are less than accurate so news
accounts and official records are somewhat sketchy as to the intent of the
meet. While the day received American Automobile Association sanction no one
is quite sure if this was a 'racing program' or part of the Buick Racing
Team tour and an exhibition. Strang broke several records at the Illinois
State Fair including circling the dirt oval for 50 miles in just over 50
minutes. A motorcycle race was also part of the entertainment and J. Nash
McCrea won on a Thor built in Aurora. Of note is the fact that Strang's run
at Springfield came over a month before the official opening of the
Indianapolis Motor Speedway!
What is clearer is that the races held in the next Illinois State fair were
part of an October race meet that included several classes of cars, local
entries and a purse placed on the day's longest event of $500 in gold!
Oldfield was a part of the day's festivities and Springfield's Art Bisch won
one of the events. The large and raucous crowd enjoyed a full day of racing
until the finale. During the final event a racer entered by Springfield's
Larue Vredenburgh crashed and overturned killing the twenty eight year old
member of one of Springfield's most prominent families.
Racing did not return in 1911, though Ray Harroun's Indianapolis 500 winning
Marmon was on display during part of the fair. When the sport did return in
1912 it was open wheel, open cockpit 'Big Cars" that played before large
crowds. Drivers such as Louis Disbrow, Fred Horey, Leon Duray, Oldfield and
George "Texas" Clark were pioneers of early American auto racing and each
won at some point on the Springfield Mile. Minnesota's Sig Haughdahl was an
IMCA champion. He would become a crowd favorite at the Illinois State Fair
and later set world records on Daytona's sandy beach.
By 1926 the fair board realized the configuration of the racetrack was a
problem. Shoehorned near barns and with an old wooden grandstand the
east-west slant of the track meant drivers and fans were blinded by the late
afternoon sun. A massive reconstruction project was authorized with the
track being placed in its present location and a steel/brick and concrete
grandstand built along the front straightaway. Records still fell with the
new track with Wilson Pingrey lapping at over 80 miles an hour in August of
1927 and Chuck Bane breaking Pingrey's 25-mile record in the second event of
the fair!
The famous also showed up with 1931 Indianapolis 500 winner Lou Schnieder
setting records and posting victories in 1928 but the next year motor sports
faced extinction at the Illinois State Fair. A spectator fatality and
numerous injuries caused when a car crashed through the outer fence happened
in conjunction with several driver injuries on track. The bad publicity and
lawsuits forced the Illinois State Fair board to
ban auto racing at the fairgrounds for several years. Racing would return in
a big way thanks to the passage of time and a racing promoter who would wind
up in the hail of fame.
The destruction of many board tracks across America led AAA to look for
other venues to run championship style cars. One-mile horse tracks seemed to
be one solution, the facility at Langhorne Pennsylvania was built
specifically for cars and the fairground track at Syracuse, New York hosted
both cars and ponies. Ralph "Pappy' Hankinson was a legendary promoter and
was convinced that Springfield could host a successful national championship
race. He lobbied, successfully for the return of racing to Springfield and
obtained an AAA sanctioned national championship race. On August 25, 1934
Billy Winn put his name in the record books as the first national
championship race winner at the Illinois State Fairgrounds.
Winn was a crowd pleaser and a repeat winner but lost his life in 1938 on
his beloved Springfield Mile. Future Indianapolis 500 winners Wilbur Shaw
and Mauri Rose took wins on the mile before World War
II while Ted Horn grabbed a win after the war. Motorcycles also took part in
the fair festivities from 1912 on and in 1937 came under the American
Motorcycle Association sanction. From 1938-1953 the
winner of the Springfield Mile was declared the AMA Grand National champion.
Sprint cars ran before and after World War II with Jimmy Wilburn becoming a
household name in the capitol city. Stock cars ran after the 1950and 1953
fair, disappeared and returned in 1961.
During the 1950's Springfield became synonymous with American championship
racing. Drivers looked forward to the wide and fast mile, while fans looked
forward to the men and the visit of the Indianapolis machines. It would be
only fitting that an Illini, Tony Bettenhausen of Tinley Park, become the
first three-time national championship race winner in Springfield history.
Tony captured his first Springfield win in September of 1947 on the mile,
then followed that up with wins in October of 1950 and August of 1951, the
latter propelling him to his first national title. His bolt upright style in
and out of the car gained him hero status in the sporting world.
Bill Schnidler, Rodger Ward, Jimmy Bryan and Len Sutton joined Tony B. as
Springfield race winners during the fifties, while Joe Leonard and Paul
Goldsmith would duel on Springfield's dirt, not in racecars but on bikes in
the AMA races.
Nineteen sixty-one saw change and sadness at the fairgrounds. Tony
Bettenhausen was killed at Indianapolis that May and the championship race,
nameless since 1934 became memorialized for Tony.
Motorcycle races continued during the fair but stock cars from USAC were
added after the fair's run and Len Sutton became the first to take both a
championship (1959) and stock car (1961) 100 miler at the
fairgrounds.
The sixties have been called racing's greatest decade and that may have been
the case at Springfield. A.J. Foyt won three of his then record four
Bettenhausen races. Mario Andretti won in 1969 while Jim
Hurtubise took the first two Bettenhausen events. Stock car drivers were no
slouches either as Norm Nelson, Don White and Butch Hartman won thrilling
and controversial events. The decade had it's sad
moments as well. First, the passing of Springfield's own Alien Crowe at a
USAC Sprint race in New Bremen, Ohio led to the first Allen Crowe Memorial
100 in 1963. In 1964 Bill Horstmeyer lost his life in
a horrific championship car crash on the front stretch. Two years later in
nearly the same spot a catwalk collapsed in the grandstand during an
exhibition resulting in injuries and fatalities.
A new concrete retaining wall was placed around the outside of the
Springfield Mile in time for the 1966 race won by Champaign's Don Branson.
The new all helped speed up the running of the Allen Crowe
100 stock car race (run during the fair in 1965) as no longer did the outer
chain link and board fence have to be repaired in a crash.
The 1970's saw another change at Springfield as it was removed, along with
the other dirt tracks, from the national championship trail. The crowds
still came as did the star drivers, A.J. Foyt, Al Unser and Mario Andretti
won the first five races of the new Dirt Track Division which would later
become the Silver Crown Series. Stock cars ran on Sunday's during most of
the decade with controversy remaining part of the Allen Crowe 100. A
racetrack in need of a new surface broke up and became dusty and it was
necessary to stop more than one race for the water truck. In 1975 the race
was stopped due to a power failure on the grounds. State Fair Motor Sports
Director Bill Oldani rectified the surface issue in 1979 when 10.000 tons of
clay were placed on the track.
USAC's stock car division began to wane in the late 1970's and in the 80's
folded up shop completely but not before Dean Roper would win four of six
races early in the decade as USAC added a second date to the fairgrounds.
ARCA stepped in when USAC needed cars in 1983 and in 1985 became the sole
stock car sanctioning body for the Allen Crowe 100. Dirt cars continued
their spectacular Tony Bettenhausen 100 runs with Tony's son Gary picking up
a win in 106 degree heat in 1983 and Steve Chassey and Jeff Swindell
breaking the 31 and 30 second barriers in qualifying respectively as the one
lap record fell six times during the decade. Sprint cars came back to the
fairgrounds in 1980 as Steve Kinser set a world record in qualifying that
would be broken by Rick Ferkel in 1982. Midgets returned during the 1983
fair with the Rex Easton 25.
The 90's opened with Chuck Gurney winning his record tying 4th Bettenhausen
then getting 5 in 1991 and two more in 1994 and 1996. ARCA stock car shows
proved wildly popular with big crowds and NASCAR and dirt late model stars
making their way to the big mile. Ken Schrader returned to Springfield in
1993 bringing dirt standout Bob Hill with him. Unfortunately the decade also
saw the passing of Bill Oldani prior to the 1993fair and the future of auto
racing at the Illinois State Fair was in great doubt.
Bob Sargent of Track Enterprises, the owner of Macon Speedway had proven
that a still date in 1992 would be successful bringing dirt late models and
modifieds to Springfield for the first Illinois Fall Nationals. He was the
logical choice to take over for Bill Oldani and Sargent immediately made
changes adding the local sportsman cars for the Wynn's Sportsman Nationals,
an event now entering it's 17th year.
Sargent and his group would see the Bettenhausen 100 and Crowe 100 as well
as the Fall Nationals through some glorious and trying times. ARCA's Frank
Kimmel won a record seven Allen Crowe 100 races while Dave Darland became a
three-time winner of the Bettenhausen. Billy Moyer, Scott Bloomquist and
Brian Birkhofer all fell in love with the big mile in late models while Jeff
Leka, Wes O'Dell and Dennis Vandermeersch became local heroes who won on the
mile. Sprint cars returned and bought large crowds and lap speeds in excess
of 145 miles an hour. Sadly, grand champion Dean Roper had a heart attack
and passed away during the 2001 Crowe 100 while George Handley lost his life
in a modified in the 2002 Illinois Fall Nationals.
The Nationals fell on hard times and eventually were moved to LaSalle in
2007. The Bettenhausen suffered from low car counts and lagging attendance
but the Silver Crown Series seems to be on an upswing and the race remains
among the most prestigious in the series. ARCA remains the only major stock
car sanctioning body to run on dirt. ARCA continues to give fans a battle
of local drivers versus national stars. Springfield's Justin Allgaier became
the first hometown driver in over 70 years to win a major race at the
Illinois State Fair and went on to the 2008 ARCA title.
From triumph to tragedy, from world renown racing stars to unheralded
weekend warriors, from early 'big cars' to national championship machines to
sprint cars, stock cars, midgets and motorcycles, the Illinois State
Fairgrounds has seen it all in 100 years of auto racing. Seventy-six
national championship dirt track races, fifty-seven national championship
stock car events. Numerous midget car, sprint car, stock car and motorcycle
races. World speed records too numerous to count. The Springfield Mile has
a racing history that predates the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. As just one
of four operating one-mile fairground dirt tracks in the country, she
remains a vital link to America's oval track racing heritage.
Here's to another 100 years!
