John Bradshaw Memorial Fast Facts and Tidbits

-This event was added to the Ponderosa Speedway schedule in late 2003 as a combination event with the Fall Classic as a tribute to the late John Bradshaw, who had taken over at the promotional helm at “The Pond” to begin the 2003 season, but tragically lost his life early on after running only a handful events early in the 2003 season.

-In the inaugural event that was contested in 2003, Johnny Wheeler of Campbellsville, KY would drive the Yantz Motorsports owned Rayburn Race Car mount to the checkered in what was a combined John Bradshaw Memorial/Fall Classic event as Jerry Denson had taken over as the promoter at “The Pond”.  The race was sanctioned by the STARS Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series and saw 2003 series champion Mike Marlar score a runner-up finish in the race.  Timmy Yeager, Mike Jewell, and Jesse Lay would complete the top five.

-The O’Reilly NARA Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series presented by Arizona Sport Shirts was back to sanction the 2004 version of the John Bradshaw Memorial and what a race it was, as Steve Barnett, Aaron Hatton, Benji Lee, and Don O’Neal went at it “tooth and nail” over the final 15 circuits of the race, with Raywick, KY native Benji Lee scoring his only to date career O’Reilly NARA Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series event win.  Lee drove the Kenneth Harlow owned entry to what is the biggest career win to date for the second-generation Marion County youngster.  Hatton, Barnett, O’Neal, and Mike Jewell would complete the top five.

-For 2005, the O’Reilly NARA Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series was back to sanction the 3rd Annual John Bradshaw Memorial race and the inaugural “BoB Late Model” champion from 2002, Eddie Carrier, Jr. of Salt Rock, WV, would drive the Grover Motorsports owned Rocket Chassis mount to the win over 2005 series co-champion Mike Jewell, with Brad Neat, Whitney McQueary, and Anthony Adams completing the top five.

-The 2006 edition of the event was called the Ponderosa 50/4th Annual John Bradshaw Memorial and was sanctioned by the O’Reilly NARA Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series.  The race was the highest paying to win event for Late Models that has been contested at “The Pond” in over four and one-half years and when the dust settled, Greg Johnson of Bedford, IN walked away with $5,000 for his efforts by winning the event over Eddie Carrier, Jr., Chris Combs, Brad Neat, and Scott James in an event that will always be remembered for the infamous Aaron Hatton/Earl Pearson, Jr. “parking” accident in turn one.

-With the addition of the new clay surface at what was now being called “Kentucky’s Baddest Bullring”, only one word could describe the action in the ’07 Bradshaw Memorial event-Insane!  Mike Marlar of Winfield, TN would get his first win (and $5,000) in this event after charging from the rear of the field with a flat tire on lap 10.  Marlar would take the lead on lap 40 when race leader Aaron Hatton had mechanical issues as the pair battled door to door for the top spot.  Scott James would outgun Victor Lee for second, with Campbellsville natives Tim Tungate and Jason Keltner garnering fourth and fifth positions.

-The 2008 John Bradshaw Memorial event would be co-sanctioned by the O’Reilly Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series and Independent Racing Series and Rob Blair of Titusville, PA would make an 11 hour tow pay off in his first ever visit to “The Pond” by claiming the $5,000 payday over Victor Lee, Don O’Neal, Michael England, and Dustin Linville, with an event record 34 entries on hand.

-For 2009, the John Bradshaw Memorial event was contested on a dry, smooth slick racing surface after three inches of rain in the early morning hours prior to the race and Victor Lee of Stanford, KY would win one of the few events he had not already won at least once in his career at Ponderosa Speedway by scoring the $5,000 first-time win in this event.  Trailing Lee in an exciting finish were Eddie Carrier, Jr., Mike Marlar, David Webb, and Bobby Wolter, Jr.

-Eddie Carrier, Jr. of Salt Rock, WV would become the first repeat winner of the John Bradshaw Memorial event with his victory in the 2010 event sanctioned by the National All Star Racing Association.  Trailing Carrier, Jr. at the drop of the checkered flag in the event were Mike Marlar, Greg Johnson, Victor Lee, and David Webb.

The 2011 edition of the 9th annual John Bradshaw Memorial at “Kentucky’s Baddest Bullring” will be held on August 5, 2011. The race this year will be $3,000 to win and $250 to start for the Good Neighbor Pharmacy Super Late Models. The Main event race for this year will be 40 laps. Also in action at The Ponderosa Speedway will be the Ken Towery’s Auto Care and Super Service Open Wheel Modifieds for $1,000 to win and $75. This Feature race will be 25 laps. The Final Division in action for the Nights events will be The D&D Pallet Recyclers Sportsman for $1,000 to win and $75 to start. This race will be 20 laps. The nights events at Ponderosa Speedway will be sponsored by, Bob Allen Motor Mall of Danville KY, Whitaker Bank, Schaeffer Oil, Simple Sign and Decal of Stanford KY.

Pete Abell Memorial Fast Facts and Tidbits

-The Pete Abell Memorial first appeared on the Ponderosa Speedway in 1995 as a tribute to longtime Central Kentucky racer Pete Abell, who lost his life in an automobile accident on a Friday evening on his way home after racing earlier that evening at Ponderosa Speedway and Darrell Lanigan of Union, KY would be the winner of the inaugural running of the Pete Abell Memorial by taking the checkered flag first ahead of Josh Tarter, Mike Jewell, Dale Atwood, and Finn Watson.

-In 1996, legendary chassis builder Carl Jerome (C.J.) Rayburn of Whiteland, IN would put his name on the winner’s check of the 2nd Annual Pete Abell Memorial.  The win for Rayburn would be even sweeter as it came at the track just about 30 miles from Rayburn spent his childhood in Middleburg, KY.

-Darrell Lanigan would repeat in the 3rd Annual Pete Abell Memorial event in 1997 as he would outdistance Bobby Carrier, Jr., Jim Robinson, Randy Boggs, and Johnny Wheeler to the checkered flag.  Lanigan remains the only repeat winner of the Pete Abell Memorial event in its 10 year history.

-The 1998 Pete Abell Memorial event would see “The Real Deal” Don O’Neal of Martinsville, IN grab the Pete Abell Memorial checkered flag ahead of two-time previous winner Darrell Lanigan, with Mike Jewell, Troy Green, and Terry English completing the top five.

-The Northern All Stars Late Model Series would sanction the 1999 Pete Abell and “The Silver Shark” Scott James of Lawrenceburg, IN would claim the first of a NALMS weekend sweep by claiming the 5th Pete Abell Memorial win.  Darrell Lanigan would again turn in a runner-up performance for the second consecutive year, while Mike Jewell, Steve Barnett, and Audie McWilliams rounded out the top five.

-“The Chosen One” Timmy Yeager of Harrodsburg, KY would drive the Danny and Diane Preston owned Double D Motorsports Rayburn Race Cars entry to an extremely popular win in the 6th Pete Abell Memorial win in 2000, with Jeff Gullett turning the wrenches on the winning mount.

-The “Scottsburg Express” Mike Jewell of Scottsburg, IN would claim the 7th Annual Pete Abell Memorial in 2001 in his MasterSbilt Race Cars entry in an event that would also prove to be a popular victory with the race fans in attendance that evening.

-The Pete Abell Memorial event would not be held in 2002 as then track promoter James King closed the gates at “The Pond” about midway through the 2002 season.

Pete Abell Memorial Fast Facts and Tidbits (continued)…

-The event returned to the Ponderosa Speedway schedule in 2003 with the O’Reilly STARS Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series sanctioning the race and Johnny Wheeler of Campbellsville, KY would continue a 2003 hotstreak at “The Pond” as “The Wheel Man” scored the race win ahead of Mike Marlar, Whitney McQueary, Aaron Hatton, and Darrell Lanigan.

-The 2004 Pete Abell Memorial race was rained out and not rescheduled.

-The Northern All Stars Late Model Racing Series returned to the Ponderosa Speedway in 2005 for the 10th Annual Pete Abell Memorial that saw the “Sadorus Sensation” Steve Hillard of Sadorus, Illinois claim the $3,500 payday ahead of the brother tandem of Dustin Neat and Brad Neat, who were followed to the checkered flag by Victor Lee and Mike Jewell.  On a side note, 2005 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series champion Tony Stewart of Columbus, IN would compete in the event on an off weekend from Nextel Cup competition and score a 9th place finish in the race.

-Chris Combs of Isom, KY would etch his name in the record books as the 2006 Pete Abell Memorial winner in the Northern All Stars Late Model Series sanctioned event that saw Combs outrun Mike Marlar, Mike Jewell, Tim Tungate, and Timmy Yeager to the checkered flag for a $3,500 payday.

-Aaron Hatton of Mount Sterling, KY would continue his 2007 hot streak at “Kentucky’s Baddest Bullring” by visiting victory lane in the 2007 Pete Abell Memorial race.  Finishing second through fifth behind the eventual 2007 Good Neighbor Pharmacy Super Late Model track champion would be Jerry Rice, David Webb, Chris Combs, and Victor Lee.

-Victor Lee of Stanford, KY would keep his roll of O’Reilly Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series victories at Ponderosa Speedway in check as the “Lincoln Leadfoot” would follow up his “Junebug” win with a win in the Pete Abell Memorial after lapping up to the 11th place finisher in just 40 laps.  The remainder of the top five finishers were Mike Marlar, Dustin Linville, Jason Keltner, and Chris Combs.

-Mike Marlar of Winfield, TN would etch his name in the record books as the 2009 Pete Abell Memorial winner and become a first time winner of this event.  Marlar’s victory would come in a hotly contested affair over David Webb, Eddie Carrier, Jr., Mike Jewell, and Justin Rattliff.

-The Volunteer Racing Series would sanction the 2010 version of the Pete Abell Memorial and would produce another new winner of the event as Justin Rattliff of Campbellsville, KY would grab the race lead from Dustin Linville on lap 28 of the 40 affair to score the win and $3,000 prize money.  Linville would take runner-up honors, followed by Eddie Carrier, Jr., Mike Marlar, and 14th place starter David Webb.

-The 2011 version of the Pete Abell Memorial event will go off as an unsanctioned event for the track’s Good Neighbor Pharmacy Super Late Model division, with $3,000 to win and $250 to start up for grabs in the 40 lap main event.  The track’s Ken Towery’s Auto Tires and Super Service Modifeds racing for $1,000 to win and 75 to start.

-The Chris Estes/Brad Pena Memorial event was added to the Ponderosa Speedway schedule for the first time in 2008 as a tribute to this well respected pair of young man after they tragically lost their lives in an automobile accident in late October of 2007 on the way to the World of Outlaws series World Finals in Charlotte, NC. The pair are also remembered with the Chris Estes Memorial Engine Builder of the Year Award, won in 2008 by Vic Hill Race Engines, and with the Brad Pena Memorial Crew Chief of the Year Award, won in 2008 by Terry Linville, crew chief for Dustin Linville.

-Mike Marlar of Winfield, TN would make the inaugural running of the Chris Estes/Brad Pena Memorial a memorable one, especially for the Estes family, as the “Winfield Warrior” would pilot the Estes family owned C.J. Rayburn Race Cars mount to victory in less than ideal track conditions, as the event was contested on the first Saturday of April after approximately 6 inches of rain had fell in the 48 hours leading up to the event. Marlar would hold off Jason Keltner to get the win, followed by Shon Flanery, Michael Chilton, and Rohn Moon. Victor Lee would also lower the track record at this event to its current mark of 12.744 seconds on that unseasonably cool and damp evening.

-Victor Lee of Stanford, KY would put his name in the record books as the winner of the 2nd Chris Estes/Brad Pena Memorial event in dominant fashion as he led all 40 laps in claiming the $4,000 payday. Lee would pilot the Frank Revel Motorsports owned Kentucky’s Best, Budda Bert Transmissions Sales and Service sponsored #4 C.J. Rayburn Race Cars, Jay Dickens Race Engines powered machine. Greg Johnson would finish a distant second, followed by Tyrel Todd, Michael Chilton, and Dustin Linville. A total of 31 entries would attempt to make the 24 car starting field.

-The 2010 version of the Chris Estes/Brad Pena Memorial would be a classic duel between a pair of second-generation racers as Eddie Carrier, Jr. of Salt Rock, WV would outduel Bryantsville, KY native Dustin Linville to pick up the $3,000 payday. A trio of second-generation racers would complete the top five in the form of Jordan Bland of Campbellsville, KY and the brother duo of Mike and Skylar Marlar of Winfield, TN, as 9 of the 23 starters in the event were second generation drivers.

-A total of forty-six (46) different drivers have made the previous three Estes/Pena Memorial events. Those racers making the event for the first time in 2010 included Jordan Bland, Skylar Marlar, Eric Wells, Chris Combs, Aaron Ridley, Steve Stollings, Lance Matthees, Anthony Adams, and John Grega.

-There have been eight (8) drivers that have made all three previous Chris Estes/Brad Pena Memorial events. Those drivers include Michael Chilton, Arnie Fields, Larry Gray, Jr., Victor Lee, Dustin Linville, Mike Marlar, David Webb, and Bobby Wolter, Jr.
