ATTICA, Ohio. - July 15, 2011 - Shannon Babb wants to win every DIRTcar Summer Nationals Hell Tour event he enters, evidenced by him winning his fifth consecutive race Friday night at Attica Raceway Park.

(For the latest breaking news from the DIRTcar Summer Nationals Hell Tour, click here to follow along on Twitter.)

Babb, who will be crowned DIRTcar Summer Nationals Champion for the third time in his career after Saturday night's event at Oakshade Raceway, started fourth in the main event and battled with Pinconning, Mich., driver Jeep Van Wormer and current DIRTcar Late Model National point leader Ryan Unzicker of El Paso, Ill., through heavy lapped traffic to earn his eighth win of the 2011 tour worth $5,000. Van Wormer settled for second, his second consecutive runner-up finish to Babb. Unzicker crossed the line in third ahead of Greenbriar, Ark., driver Jack Sullivan and home state driver Jon Henry of Ada, Ohio.

Babb Runs Win Streak to Four at Spoon River Summer Nationals ‘Hell Tour’ Event

CANTON, Ill. - July 14, 2011 - Shannon Babb obviously didn't think three consecutive DIRTcar Summer Nationals Hell Tour wins was enough, capturing Thursday night's event at Spoon River Speedway.

(For the latest breaking news from the DIRTcar Summer Nationals Hell Tour, click here to follow along on Twitter.)

Babb started the race on the pole, but Steve Lance Jr., of Peoria, Ill., jumped to the early lead using the preferred low groove of the Illinois oval. Babb stalked Lance over the course of the events first five laps before moving under Lance, who slid out of the racing line on lap six to take command. Babb rolled on to victory leading the rest of the way to claim the $5,000 top prize, his fourth consecutive and seventh overall victory of the 2011 'Hell Tour'. Pinconning, Mich., driver Jeep Van Wormer climbed from his fourth place starting spot courtesy of a second heat race win, to finish second behind Babb. Brandon Sheppard, a tour winner at Lincoln and Farmer City, finished third ahead of Lance who settled for fourth. Jack Sullivan of Greenbriar, Ark., finished fifth, his third consecutive fifth-place finish.

Babb Dominates LaSalle Speedway Summer Nationals for Third Straight Win

LASALLE, Ill. - July 13, 2011 - Shannon Babb dominated the field Wednesday night at LaSalle Speedway much like he has the rest of the DIRTcar Summer Nationals Hell Tour.

(For the latest breaking news from the DIRTcar Summer Nationals Hell Tour, click here to follow along on Twitter.)

Babb started the race on the pole, but Frank Heckenast Jr., of Frankfort, Ill., jumped to the early lead using the high groove. Former DIRTcar Summer Nationals champion Kevin Weaver of Gibson City, Ill., slipped past Heckenast after the midpoint, while Waterville, Ohio native Matt Miller got by on the final circuit to finish third and relegate Heckenast to a fourth place finish. Jack Sullivan of Greenbriar, Ark., finished fifth, his second consecutive top-five.

Babb Claims Brownstown Summer Nationals ‘Hell Tour’ Win

BROWNSTOWN, Ind. - July 12, 2011 - Shannon Babb is becoming quite the familiar face in Victory Lane starting the final week of DIRTcar Summer Nationals Hell Tour competition after winning Tuesday night at Brownstown Speedway.

Babb's win is his fifth of the tour, winning all three events held in the Hoosier state in 2011. Former DIRTcar Summer Nationals Champion Dennis Erb Jr., of Carpentersville, Ill., would finish second after being involved in a lap one caution, which the winner Babb was also caught in. Dunville, Ky., driver Dustin Neat finished third ahead of fellow Kentuckian Dillan White of Crofton. Jack Sullivan rounded out the top five climbing from his 11th place starting spot.

James Slashes to Cedar Lake Summer Nationals Victory

SOMERSET, Wis. - June 17, 2011 - Scott James made the 450-mile trek to Cedar Lake Speedway worth every mile by capturing the opening night of the Masters Classic on Friday at Cedar Lake Speedway for his first DIRTcar Summer Nationals Hell Tour victory of 2011.

James, of Lawrenceburg, Ind., made the Hell Tour journey from Thursday's event at Kankakee (Ill.) Spatola Scores Victory in DIRTcar Summer Nationals Opener at Kankakee County Speedway

KANKAKEE, Ill. - June 16, 2011 - Mike Spatola doesn't have much experience in a Dirt Late Model but that didn't prevent him from winning the opening night of the DIRTcar Summer Nationals 'Hell Tour' Thursday at Kankakee County Speedway.

(For the latest breaking news from the DIRTcar Summer Nationals Hell Tour, click here to follow along on Twitter.)

The driver affectionately known as "Opie" to his friends and fans claimed the first Hell Tour win of his career, worth $5,000, by holding off fellow front row starter Chad Simpson of Mount Vernon, Iowa, and third place finisher Brian Shirley of Chatham, Ill.

Spatola, who has raced regularly at Kankakee, had a strong start to his night by earning quick time honors in his qualifying group, which he parlayed into a heat race victory and a front row starting spot in the 40-lap A-Main.

Overall quick timer Ryan Unzicker of El Paso, Ill., finished fourth while Waterville, Ohio, driver Matt Miller rounded out the top five.

CONCORD, N.C. - June 16, 2011 - The DIRTcar Summer Nationals Hell Tour and the DIRTcar Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals kick off Thursday night at Kankakee County Speedway, beginning one of the richest and most grueling months of racing in motorsports.

In addition to more than half a million dollars in nightly race purses over the course of the events that run from June 16 to July 16 throughout the Midwest, 16 sponsors have combined to add $100,000 in cash and contingency awards to the DIRTcar Summer Nationals Hell Tour and another $40,000 in cash and contingency awards to the DIRTcar Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals.

"We know how challenging it is to compete on the Hell Tour and the Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals," said World Racing Group CMO Ben Geisler. "We've worked hard to bring in partners like Summit Racing Equipment to reward competitors for surviving night after night during what is no doubt the hardest month of competition in racing."

BROWNSTOWN, Ind. - June 15, 2011 - A line strong storms that traveled through the Jackson County Fairgrounds early Wednesday morning has forced DIRTcar Racing and Brownstown Speedway officials to postpone the scheduled DIRTcar UMP Summer Nationals event at the quarter-mile oval to Tuesday, July 12.

The storms brought heavy rains and lightning that saturated the grounds, diminishing any chance of racing. The Hoosier Dirt Classic on July 12 will include the DIRTcar Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals event, as well.

UMP SUMMERNATIONALS OFF AND RUNNING by Jeff Adams

The 2011 version of the UMP Late Model Summernationals has begun this week, with the opening event at Brownstown Speedway in Indiana washed away by rain. The Brownstown race has been re-scheduled for July 12.

The 2011 version of the “Hell Tour”, as it is known, will feature 27 races in 33 nights, covering 8 different states. The grueling tour will award the winner a $25,000 paycheck at the UMP Banquet in December. Bloomington’s Jason Feger is the defending champion.

Several local tracks have dates on the schedule, with Kankakee running last night. Next Monday, June 20, the tour goes to LaSalle Speedway, with Spoon River Speedway the next night. Highland, Fayette County, Pontoon Beach and Fairbury next Saturday night will follow the SRS event next week.

Belle Claire Speedway in Belleville will run on June 29, with Lincoln Speedway July 3. Wednesday, July 6, Peoria Speedway follows an open date, with the “Herald and Review 100” at Macon and Farmer City Raceway following Peoria.

All mid-week races pay $5,000 to-win, with Friday and Saturday events paying $10,000. New for 2011 is the “Modified Summernationals”, with the UMP Modifieds tagging along with the Late Models and running for a $10,000 point fund. The Modifieds will accrue their top 10 finishes to determine who will be crowned Champion.

Drivers expected to challenge Feger for the title include former SN champs Shannon Babb of Mowequa, Dennis Erb, Jr. of Carpentersville, and Kevin Weaver from Gibson City. El Paso’s Ryan Unzicker, Jack Sullivan of Greenbriar, AR, Gary Christian from Broken Bow, OK, Chatham’s Brian Shirley, Bobby Pierce from Oakwood, Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Jeep Van Wormer of Pinconning, MI, Highland’s Randy Korte, and Scott James of Bright, IN have committed to follow the tour.

Fans can keep track of the series on the official website, TheHellTour.com   Midwestdirttrackfacts.com will also be following the series with daily updates.

The Hunted: Feger Begins Quest For Second Straight DIRTcar Summer Nationals Title On Wednesday (June 15) At Brownstown Speedway

Renowned Late Model ‘Hell Tour’ Set To Visit 25 Tracks In Nine States Over 32-Day Period

CONCORD, NC – June 13, 2011 – Jason Feger will admit it: he’s not ready for the start of the DIRTcar Summer Nationals.

But don’t take that to mean the Bloomington, Ill., star is anything less than confident about beginning his pursuit of a second consecutive title on the aptly-named dirt Late Model ‘Hell Tour,’ which kicks off on Wednesday night (June 15) at Brownstown (Ind.) Speedway. He’s just stating a fact.

“You can never be ready for the Summer Nationals,” Feger bottom-lined with a smile. “It’s the toughest deal in dirt Late Model racing. You just go with the flow and try to be as prepared as you can.”

A grueling month of competition is on tap for Feger, 33, and his fellow DIRTcar Summer Nationals travelers, who face events at 25 tracks in nine Midwestern states during the 32-day period from June 15 through the series finale on July 16 at Oakshade Raceway in Wauseon, Ohio. The drivers will battle for a share of $167,000 in first-place cash and the $25,000 champion’s portion of the tour points fund.

All eyes will certainly be focused on Feger, the hip hard-charger who last year ended the three-year Summer Nationals championship reign of Carpentersville, Ill.’s Dennis Erb Jr. The ‘Highside Hustler’ heads out on the road for the ’11 tour as the driver to beat.

“It’s definitely gonna feel different,” Feger said of his new-found status. “I guess everybody will be gunning for me now. Instead of being the hunter, I’ll be the hunted.”

It’s a challenge that Feger accepts, however. He doesn’t anticipate any letdown from his team, any complacency after finally reaching the mountaintop of the biggest test of man and machine in the dirt Late Model division.

“We usually do pretty good at staying motivated,” said Feger, who has two Bob Pierce-built cars and four Rhyne engines at his disposal for the Summer Nationals grind. “Everything’s been going pretty good for us lately, so we’re looking forward to it.”

Feger enters the Summer Nationals with a healthy dose of momentum, notwithstanding his disappointing trip to Ohio’s Eldora Speedway for last weekend’s DIRTcar UMP-sanctioned Dream XVII. He failed to qualify for the $100,000-to-win A-Main following a heat-race incident – his only truly disappointing outing over the past month.

After finishing second in a World of Outlaws Late Model Series A-Main on April 29 at Hartford (Mich.) Motor Speedway, Feger clicked off three wins and just one finish outside the top five (a seventh) in his next 10 DIRTcar UMP starts. Eight of those races came in the two weeks between May 20 and June 4, a busy stretch that gave him a taste of the virtually non-stop Summer Nationals schedule.

“We’ve been racing a lot here lately and it’s been hot too,” said Feger. “We’ve been getting a good warmup for the Summer Nationals. It’s gotten us back to reality about what we’re gonna be facing here for the next month.”

Not that Feger needs much reminding about how difficult the Summer Nationals can be. He has been through the whirlwind enough in recent years to understand what it takes to be successful.

“If you’re running good, it makes it a lot easier on you mentally,” said Feger, who owns five career Summer Nationals feature wins. “Winning can fix a lot of problems. If you’re running bad and tearing stuff up, that’s when you start getting frustrated and the guys get frustrated. If you can consistently get good runs, it helps keep you mentally fresh.

“The physical aspect is the hardest part – how the series can be so tiring. When you have to drive so far between races, you don’t even have a chance to stop, eat a good meal or relax for just a little bit. It’s hurry up, load up, drive down the road, grab some fast-food somewhere, and get to the track so you can fix the car in 100-degree heat – you get no time to recharge your batteries.

“They definitely don’t call it the ‘Hell Tour’ for nothing,” he concluded.

Feger won just two A-Mains en route to his ’10 Summer Nationals crown, but he recorded seven runner-up finishes. He’s hoping to turn those seconds into victories this time around.

“If you can win some races, that’s when you’re making your money,” said Feger. “We’d definitely like to improve and win a few more races this year and work toward the championship that way.

“It would be real nice to win 10 or more races like Shannon (Babb) and other guys did when they won championships, but the competition is really tough. I think it would be hard for anybody to win that many races again. Not only does everything have to go your way to win a race, but you have to deal with guys like (Billy) Moyer (the alltime winningest driver in Summer Nationals competition) and (Don) O’Neal popping in fresh and running awfully good against us and everywhere we go you have some locals who know their tracks real well.”

Feger’s prime rivals for the Summer Nationals title figure to once again be former series champs Erb and Moweaqua, Ill.’s Babb, but there’s a host of other drivers jockeying for position in the spotlight. DIRTcar UMP national points Ryan Unzicker of El Paso, Ill., is among the core group of racers planning to follow the entire ‘Hell Tour,’ along with up-and-coming teenager Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Ill., Jack Sullivan of Greenbrier, Ark., Scott James of Greendale, Ind., Randy Korte of Highland, Ill., Billy Moyer Jr. of Batesville, Ark., Donny Walden of Towanda, Ill., and Jim Moon of Zionsville, Ind.

Other drivers expected to enter numerous Summer Nationals events – and perhaps follow the entire trail, depending on performance – include Brian Shirley of Chatham, Ill., Will Vaught of Crane, Mo., Kevin Weaver of Gibson City, Ill., Kent Robinson of Bloomington, Ind., Mike Spatola of Manhattan, Ill., Rodney Melvin of Benton, Ill., Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., Jeep VanWormer of Pinconning, Mich., Ronny Lee Hollingsworth of Gulport, Ala., Brandon Thirlby of Traverse City, Mich., and Gary Christian of Broken Bow, Okla.

“I think the 2011 DIRTcar Summer Nationals is going to be as competitive as ever,” said DIRTcar UMP director Sam Driggers. “We have a great group of drivers ready to go out on the road and bring fans across the Midwest a real action-packed month of racing.”

Teams that make it through the entire month will travel over 4,500 miles between the tracks on the series, which boasts 17 races paying $5,000 to win, seven events offering a $10,000 top prize and a tour-best $12,000-to-win event on July 1 at Paducah (Ky.) International Raceway.

Driggers said the ‘Hell Tour’ will include a handful of new wrinkles this season, including two-lap group qualifying at each stop; electronic transponder scoring every night for the first time; and four provisional starting spots at each race (two Summer Nationals points provisionals, one 2010 DIRTcar UMP national points provisional and one track/local provisional).
