Mumaw, Lee, Conley, Wisecarver and Hensel take checkers at WCS
By Ryan Pearson
Orrville, Ohio (August 12, 2011) Wayne County Speedway swung open the doors
and the fans and racers came out to pack 3/8 mile speed plant. “We had a
great night tonight. The track was racy. Our fan and car counts were both
good too. Everything is coming together” stated General Manager Jason Flory
after the races. “We have room to improve, but overall for ten dollars and
see that racing, you can’t beat it!”
In the 410 Winged Sprint division it would be Wooster, Ohio’s Danny Mumaw
and Arlington Virginia’s Aaron Shaffer who would lead the field down to the
green flag. At the drop Mumaw would motor out to the point being chased by
Jason Dolick, Shaffer, Rob Chaney, Lee Jacobs and Aaron Middaugh. An early
caution would fly for Nick Patterson and Trey Jacobs. When the racing would
resume Mumaw again would jump out to the lead. On lap 8 the caution would
again fly for Matt Warner who spun out. On the drop of the green Mumaw again
would power out front of the pack. He would still be chased by Dolick,
Chaney and Jacobs. On lap 13 Chaney would work the high side in turn one and
two to pass Dolick. As Chaney would complete the pass the leader Mumaw would
catch lapped traffic. As Mumaw maneuvered the back markers Chaney would
slightly close the gap between him and the leader. Mumaw would work his way
through traffic but on lap 15 he would slightly bobble coming off turn two
and get over the cushion. Chaney would then dip under Mumaw and drag race
down the back stretch making the pass. As both cars would get into turn 3
Mumaw would slide under Chaney as they came off of turn 4. Chaney would then
slice back under Mumaw and drag race down the front stretch side by side. As
they approached turn one the leaders would pass a lapped car that was
running around the middle of the track. Both front runners would take the
high side by side appearing to be mere inches as they entered turn one with
neither one wanting to lift. Mumaw would just have enough to rim ride the
cushion to regain the lead from Chaney. As the laps wound down Chaney would
pressure Mumaw from the high side again to no avail. Mumaw would slightly
jump the cushion on the last lap; he just would be out of reach of Chaney to
complete a pass. At the checkers it was Mumaw coming home the winner. He was
followed by Chaney; eighth starting Jacobs who made a late race pass for
third, Dolick and seventh starting Broc Martin. “Wasn’t too happy starting
on the front row because you never know what is going to happen, but it
worked out good this time. We (Chaney) had a good battle, it was fun” stated
an ecstatic Mumaw in victory lane. “I don’t think either of us was going to
back down on that one, but we just lucked out by hooking the cushion. That
was fun that’s for sure” Mumaw continued. Winning a heat race was Middaugh.
Bryce Dickson also won heat race but was later DQ for failing to cross the
scales.
In the Super Late Model division it was Kyle Bates jumping out to a quick
lead over Cory Conley, Doug Drown, Donnie Moran and Doug Dodd. Bates lead
would be short lived as Conley would motor pass Bates for the lead. Conley
would hold a slight advantage over Drown, Moran, Bates, Ryan Markham and
George Lee. On lap 12 Conley would hold a very slight lead over Moran as
Moran looked high then low trying to pass Conley. On lap 16 the caution
would come out for the leader who would have mechanical issues handing the
lead over to Moran. Quietly Lee would move into second place. He was
followed by Drown, Dodd and D.J. Cline. As the races resumed Lee would slip
under and power his way around Moran for the lead. Moran was plastered the
rear bumper of Lee as the laps clicked down. On final lap Moran would
slightly jump the cushion and roll his bumper under the car thus allowing
Dodd to move into second. Moran would have trouble steering but would keep
going. As the checker flag would drop it was seventh starting Lee taking
home his second win this season over Dodd, Moran, tenth starting Markham and
sixteenth starting Charlie Duncan who won/transferred from the B-Main. “Look
who is here, look at the caliber of cars here and we have a phenomenal car
here thanks to Rick Peterman, LSI incorporated, Mastersbuilt. I mean it is
just a phenomenal car right now” stated a very excited Lee in victory lane.
“We are just excited we can come from seventh to pass some good cars and go
away and win. Thank you everyone for coming out and supporting Wayne County
Speedway” Lee continued. “When he was told GM Jason Flory said he is winning
too much money here at Wayne County Speedway. Lee started to laugh grinning
he stated “No way!” Winning heat races were Drown, Conley and Moran.
In the Tri-State Modified division it was pole sitter Jesse Wisecarver
jumping out to the lead over Doug Drown, Cory Conley, Anthony Kinkade and
Rory Reed. Drown would begin his pursuit for the lead and would put heavy
pressure on Wisecarver. On lap 4 the caution would fly for second running
Drown. As the green flag dropped it appeared Wisecarver had trouble firing
off thus handing the lead over to Conley. Kinkade making his first appear at
WCS for the 2011 season would pressure Conley. Rounding out the top five
would be Reed, Kevin Morehouse and Larry Kugel. Feeling the heat Conley
would move around the track searching for the fast groove. On lap 13 Kinkade
would make his move bolting to the lead over Conley. It didn’t last long as
they raced clean Conley would take to high side to regain the lead. A late
race caution would fly for second place running Kinkade who spun in turn 2.
He would then retire pitside with mechanical issues. That would bunch the
field but it was Conley taking home the win. He was followed by Reed,
Morehouse, eighth starting Kugel and Darrick Hubbard. Heat race winners were
Wisecarver and Drown.
In the Thrifty Discount Muffler Pure Stock it was Todd Gallion and
Zanesville, Ohio’s Ryan Wisecarver who would lead the field down to the
green flag. Wisecarver would power his way to the point as he was being
stalked by Larry Baldwin, Gallion, Brandon Gardner and Ed Leasure. On lap 2
the caution would fly for Leasure and Dave Haven Jr. Leasure would be done
for the evening after sustaining heavy damage. The green flag would drop and
the racers would get one lap in as on lap 3 second running Baldwin would
spin bringing out another caution. Wisecarver would again jump out to a
slight lead over Gardner, Gallion, Swim and Steve White. On lap 8 Gardner
would mount a furious assault on the leader as he shoved his race car under
Wisecarver. Gardner couldn’t make it stick as Wisecarver would just roll
through the center off with little resistance. At the checkers in his first
visit ever at WCS it was Wisecarver coming home the winner over Gardner,
1oth starting Swim, 15th starting Don Baney and Baldwin. Winning heat races
were Gardner, Baldwin and Steve White. Paul Whitten won the B-Main.
In the Mini Stock feature it was long time Mini Stock racer Jason King
jumping out to the lead over Bradley Hensel , Jeff Rose, Tom Keller and
Jordan James. King would survive several early cautions to maintain his lead
over the field. He would begin to stretch his lead slightly until a lap 7
caution would bunch the field up. At the drivers request it was decided to
conduct a double file restart. Hensel who was running second would slip to
the lead but King would fight back under Hensel. On lap 12 King who was
running second would retire to infield with mechanical issues. Hensel would
then maintain a comfortable lead over the field to take the win. He was
followed by Rose, Doug Hensel, twelfth starting Lester Berry and Tom Keller.
