MARTIN WINS SIXTH ANNUAL
RICHARDSON MEMORIAL
By Jack Taylor
(5/30/99) Eighty-four UMP Modified drivers from 13 states converged on Vermilion
County Speedway in Danville, IL for the Sixth Annual David Richardson Memorial
race on Sunday, May 30th.
Eight heats and four semi's later, 31- year- old Jeff Martin
of Kansas, IL had driven his modified to a victory in the 50-lap main
event, and cashed in on one of the largest modified payouts in racing circles.
Jimmy Owens and Randy Zimmerman battled for the first 20 laps until Jeff Leka
and Martin passed Zimmerman to challenge Owens. On lap 25, Martin passed Leka
and moved to the top of the track. For the next 15 laps Owens and Martin raced
side-by-side, with Owens keeping the shortest way around the track. By lap 40,
Martin had taken control of the shoot-out, and prevailed at the checkered by two
car lengths over Owens, last years champion.
