(6/30/01)

The MMA feature saw Ron Matthys jump to an early lead ahead of Jack Bowsher, Dick Leach, Jack Dowers, and Joe Reynolds.  The winner of the past two features, Dick Leach, soon found himself at the tail of the field as he had an off track excursion in the infield.  After a caution created by a spin by Jeff Barger, the racing action saw both Reynolds and Dowers able to bypass Bowsher and set their sights on the leader.  The fifth lap saw Reynolds claim the lead from Matthys and Dowers was able to dart by for second one lap later.  By the time the caution came out on lap nine (Jerry Danford Jr spin in one) Dick Leach had been able to work himself back into the top five and was sitting in fourth.  Leach was a racer possessed as he quickly disposed of Matthys to take third and overtook Dowers for second a few laps later.  The laps ran out however before the top two in points (Reynolds and Leach) could battle it out on the race track.  Reynolds crossed the line the winner followed by Leach, Dowers, Matthys, and Bowsher.  The heats were won by Mike Barger and Joe Reynolds with Reynolds taking the dash as well.

The MMA Modified action for the night included some extra curricular activity between Justin Gregory, Jim Gregory, and Dave Baldwin after the first heat race resulting in some fines and these three drivers being disqualified for the evenings events.   Their feature saw point leader, Joe Reynolds, jump to an early lead ahead of Dick Leach, Al Harris, Ken Nevel, and Ron Matthys.  Matthys got out of shape in turn one on the second lap allowing Jack Dowers to move into fifth but Harris spun his ride and continued on in three and four putting Matthys right back into the top five.  A lap later Jake Roudebush spun in turn four slowing the action as he was unable to get out of harms way.  On the restart, Leach began to put some heavy pressure on Reynolds for the top spot but the action was short lived as Matthys spun in turn four leaving Donnie Martin nowhere to go but hard into the nose of Matthys' car ending the night for both drivers and moving Jack Bowsher into the top five.  Leach once again pressured Reynolds on the restart getting by as Reynolds slid high going into one on the restart.  Ken Nevel who was running third took his car to the pits on the fourth lap before the caution came out on the fifth lap once again for Pauline Mull who found the wall in turn one.  The action resumed briefly before Jeff Barger and Don Cooper got out of shape in turns one and two negating the pass Jack Dowers made on Joe Reynolds for the second spot.  The next restart saw the action get hot and heavy as Jerry Danford Jr. made a move to get fourth from Jack Bowsher only to lose the fifth spot to Al Harris.  On the tenth circuit Harris found a way around Bowsher bringing Danford along into fifth.  Bowsher's problems were just beginning, as his car rolled to a stop on the next lap bringing out the caution.  Jack Dowers resumed his pursuit of the second spot on the restart pulling along side of Joe Reynolds and conpleting the pass on the twelveth circuit.  The last few laps were caution filled as Wayne Milius spun in turn two on the next to last lap. It took two more attempts to get the last two laps in as Danford spun bringing out the caution on the first attempt to resume the race and Al Harris lost his drive shaft and rear end on the next attempt.  But in the end it was Leach coming home in front of Dowers, Reynolds, Mike Barger, and Kim Wells.  The heat wins went to Leach and Reynolds with the Reynolds winning the dash as well.

The MMA Modifieds had a hotly contested event as well.  Pole sitter, Justin Gregory, jumped out to an early lead ahead of Jack Dowers, Dave Baldwin, Jim Gregory, and Joe Reynolds.  Justin's lead soon went away as Dowers shot by on the fourth lap.  The cars of Justin Gregory and Baldwin were having a fierce battle when Baldwin spun after these cars had made contact.  This resulted in both cars being sent to the rear of the field.  This caution allowed the cars to sort themselves out with Dowers up front, followed by Reynolds,  Jim Gregory, Ken Nevel, and Donnie Martin.  Nevel was overtaken on the restart by Martin and Reynolds used the restart to further his night's accomplishments getting past Dower and taking the lead.  The top five battled to the conclusion of the events but no one was able to get by Reynolds as he claimed the victory becoming the first multiple winner in this class during this season.  The rest of the top five were Dowers, Jim Gregory, Martin, and Al Harris who was able to hold the fifth spot in spite of the car of Justin Gregory making his way back through the field and challenging the top five by races conclusion.  The heats were won by Justin Gregory and Joe Reynolds with Reynolds taking the dash as well.

JUSTIN GREGORY HANGS ON FOR WIN

In MMA action Justin Gregory used the outside pole and shot out front ahead of Jack Dowers, Dick Leach, Bob Barger, and Joe Reynolds.  Reynolds began to make a strong move toward the front passing Barger on the second lap and then chased down Leach.  After a short side by side battle Reynolds was able to take a firm grasp on the third position from Leach.  The leader, in the meantime, had checked out and was engaging lapped traffic as Dowers, Reynolds, and Leach were running nose to tail ahead of Jim Gregory.  Justin Gregory's night was almost spoiled on the thirteenth lap as Jack Bows got out of shape in four forcing Gregory to the infield and allowing the triumvirate of Dowers, Reynolds, and Leach past.  But he was saved by the yellow because as all of this was going on Donnie Martin had spun in two slowing the action.  Dowers made a gallant effort to get past after the restart but was unable to get by as Justin Gregory held on for the win followed by Dowers, Reynolds, Leach, and Jim Gregory.  Jim Gregory and Dick Leach picked up the heat wins and Joe Reynolds won the dash.

SHADY HILL WIN TO REYNOLDS

Justin Gregory took the outside pole and converted it to the early lead in front of Joe Reynolds, Jim Gregory, Jack Dowers, and Donnie Martin.  As they were coming out of four to complete the first lap the mount of Brian Clemmens lost an axle bringing out the caution.  Dowers used the restart to take the third spot from Jim Gregory but the action was short lived as two laps later Mike Barger looped his ride around in turn four.  On the ensuing restart Justin Gregory and Reynolds distanced themselves from the pack.  Reynolds began to apply tremendous pressure to the leader but on the fifth lap he drove into three and four too hot and had to back out of it to keep out of the turn four wall allowing Justin Gregory to pull away to a comfortable lead.  Just as the leaders were getting into traffic, Dick Leach found the backstretch wall bringing out the caution on lap 9.  Reynolds who had been playing catch-up since his lap 5 mistake used the restart to claim the lead from Gregory.  On the 12th lap Mike Barger found himself facing the wrong direction once again but this time Ron Matthys had no where to go and made hard contact with him.  Al Harris used the restart to to shoot past Martin but Justin Gregory got out of shape in 4 losing the second spot to Dowers.  Reynolds cruised on to the win but Dowers lost power coming out of four and Justin Gregory, Jim Gregory, Harris, and Martin all sped past before he could coast across the finish line.  Dick Leach and Jim Gregory won the heats with the dash going Jack Dowers.

DAVE BALDWIN WINS SHADY HILL OPENER

The MMA Modified feature saw outside pole sitter, Dave Baldwin jump out front followed by second row starter Joe Reynolds, pole sitter Kim Wells, and Jeff Barger.  The second lap saw action slowed as Kerry Robbins spun in front of the leaders to bring out the caution.  On the restart Wells spun when he lost his left rear tire concluding the lap collecting Barger in the process.  Jeff Barger's car sustained heavy sheet medal damage due to the contact, but was able to continue.  On the next start Baldwin and Reynolds distanced themselves from the field as Dick Leach moved around Barger to take third.  After another caution due to a spin by Ron Matthys, Reynold's car would not come back to full speed resulting in a bottle neck while Baldwin sped away to a comfortable lead and Reynolds began to fade toward the rear.  As the laps came to a close, Jerry Danford Jr. came roaring into the picture sliding into fourth spot and mounting a challenge on 3rd place runner Jeff Barger.  Baldwin came home the winner followed by Leach, but things got a little hairy beyond that point.  As Barger and Danford came out of four side by side to race to the checkered the made contact sending Barger spinning and Danford fish tailing across the finish line to place third before he slammed the wall.  Jim Gregory and Al Harris were able to steer through the carnage to round out the top five.  The heat races were won by Reynolds and Mike Roundtree with Reynolds also taking the dash.
