SEAN SEAVERS POSTS SECOND WIN AT DANVILLE(5/5/01)
By Jack Taylor

(5/5/01)Sean Seavers of Willow Spring, IL became the first modified driver to notch a second feature win at the "Fast Track" on Sunday night. 34 UMP Modified drivers took time trials with Brandon Raef of Kokomo, IN setting fast time. Prior to the evening events as fans and drivers were filling into the speedway, a violent dust storm moved across the area, causing concern as to whether the event would even take place. But 15 minutes later, the skies began to show light again and no threat of storms re-appeared.

The track surface was well-prepared and stayed tacky during trials before turning dry-slick top to bottom as the night progressed. Three heats and a semi set the 22-car field for the feature. Terry Duncan grabbed the first heat win over Dennis Hux. Heat two went to Elvin Herschberger with Chuck Haga following. The third and final heat winner was Arby Burton topping Sean Seavers. Brad Crosby crossed the finish first in the semi-feature.

With Duncan and Herschberger filling the front row, followed by Burton and Hux, the field took the green from starter, Rick Isaacson, shortly before 9:00PM sticking to the policy of the speedway to get the fans home early on Sunday evening. Herschberger jumped out to a quick lead while Duncan, Seavers, Hux, and Burton sparred for 2-5 spots. A lap 5 caution and another on lap 9 kept the pack close, but in the control of Herschberger.

At mid-point of the race, Seavers had moved to striking distance of Herschberger, while Don Kiger and Tim O'Donnell closed in to challenge Burton and Hux. Around lap 18, Seaver moved by Herschberger to gain the lead and continued to stretch it out to the checkered. Herschberger finished second with the 3 thru 5 battle ending with Hux, Kiger, and O'Donnell.

Veteran driver, Marcus Phelps, also became a two-time winner in the Super Street division as he held off Jesse Simmons and Al Crowley for the feature win. The Bomber feature saw the top three leaders in the race nearing the end, failing to stop immediately for a red flag and track lights as the ambulance was summoned onto the track during a caution for an accident on the front straight. They were sent to the pits with DQ's and this action gave Dave Mackey his first Bomber win of the season over last week's feature winner, Jeff Barker, who started last in the field. The Hornet feature winner was Jerry Benton over Alan Shepard.
